Geleenthede geskep vir jong atlete van Noord-Kaap

Historiese samewerking

Volgens Taba is dié vennootskap iets ongekend in Suid-Afrikaanse onderwys by twee skole wat voorheen

Municipal manager now suspended

e Sol Plaatje Municipal Council in Kimberley has suspended municipal manager apelo Matlala following serious allegations of nancial misconduct and irregular contract dealings. is move has drawn both praise from community leaders and criticism from opposition parties over procedural concerns.

Community leader Tumelo Mosikare welcomed the council's decision on Tuesday, 17 September, saying it demonstrated a renewed commitment to prioritising service delivery and community interests.

“It seems after ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa's plea to ANC councillors to be more accountable to citizens, their attitude has changed, they are more serious about service delivery.”

In the meeting the councillors did not say that the municipal manager is guilty, but the allegations that are levelled against him are of a serious

nature," Mosikare explained.

e suspension comes as the municipality faces severe nancial constraints, with high tari s forcing businesses to close and making it di cult for residents to pay municipal bills.

e allegations against Matlala centre around a sewage pump station upgrade contract in Roodepan, involving Legaeng and Eagle Street. According to community sources, a complex chain of events unfolded: e original contractor struggled to make progress and requested to transfer the contract to another company. is company

allegedly belonged to a businessman who was Matlala's childhood friend and former business partner, though this relationship was not disclosed by the municipal manager.

e investigation reveals several concerning allegations:

■ the municipality paid R500 000 in tax obligations on behalf of the company;

■ Matlala allegedly wrote a letter to Standard Bank requesting an extension of the company's credit line; and ■ when the Public Protector became involved, Matlala allegedly shared his sworn statement with the businessman to help align their testimonies.

e Hawks are currently investigating the matter.

Additional concerns include the verbal appointment of companies for electrical work without following proper supply chain management processes, resulting in a court case that will cost the municipality approximately R2 million in payments and interest.

e PA and DA abstained from

voting on the suspension, citing concerns about due process. Willie Erasmus, DA councillor, warned that the council had “failed to take the damning allegations seriously” by not appointing an investigator before the disciplinary process began.

“ e lack of an investigation has thwarted the disciplinary process, as there was no evidence other than hearsay allegations and media speculation available,” he stated in a press release.

e party expressed concerns about repeating past mistakes, referencing the cases of former municipal manager Goolam Akharwaray and former chief nancial o cer (CFO) Lydia Mahloko, who continued receiving full salaries for years whilst suspended without being disciplined or charged, costing the municipality millions in duplicate salaries.

Mosikare emphasised that local legal rms with municipal relationships should not handle the investigation, calling instead for independent forensic investigators, potentially involving

A preservation order was granted in De Aar for a Volkswagen (VW) Polo worth R196 900, after suspects were observed attempting to scam members of the public using a none-existent gemstone. Police seized the vehicle after the suspects tried to drive away when they noticed the police.

Lt Col. Tebogo Thebe, spokesperson for the Hawks, says preservation orders are an instrument available to law enforcement to ensure identified assets remain secured; items cannot be sold or otherwise disposed of while investigations continue.

Similarly, in Douglas such an order was granted for a VW Polo, after the vehicle had been stopped by police and 202 Mandrax tablets and dagga weighting 10kg were found and confiscated.

the Special Investigating Unit (SIU). “ ey need to get credible forensic investigators to do this investigation for their credibility to stand,” he said. According to municipal regulations, a disciplinary hearing must commence within three months of the suspension, or the suspension will automatically lapse. e council has also committed to implementing several governance improvements, including maintaining a register of all resolutions and monitoring their implementation.

Community leaders hope that whoever is appointed in an acting capacity will prioritise community interests, terminate controversial debt collection contracts, and address electricity pricing to make the city more a ordable for residents and businesses. “ e suspension represents a signi cant moment for the Sol Plaatje Municipality, with community leaders cautiously optimistic about the council's renewed commitment to accountability whilst opposition parties monitor the process,” Mosikare says.

Historical treasure needs ‘old’ garden

The Kimberley Africana Research Library is a historical destination, and researchers from all over the world, tourists, and local residents alike visit this fascinating treasure trove which is rated one of the best of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

It is housed in the old Kimberley Public Library, which dates back to 1887 and is one of Kimberley’s oldest buildings.

Here, really old books are stacked on shelves from floor to ceiling, where an ornate wrought-iron staircase connects the floors.

To preserve this unique heritage and make it even more attractive to foreign and local visitors, those involved at the library want to change the current, quite barren garden back to what it used to be.

Old photos, which used to be printed as postcards, depict a lush green garden, with benches, shade and more in which people could read, or sit and relax.

“The lush garden of the Africana Library became the favourite local gathering place and also the only place with a garden in the central business district,” quotes Bernice Nagel, head of the Africana Library and professional librarian, from a piece written years ago on the garden.

Nagel says their aim is to recreate the garden in such a way that people want to visit the library to experience the garden as well, and even to use it as background for wedding, matric farewell, or other celebratory photos.

the library.

According to information she compiled, the collection consists of books, manuscripts, maps, archaeological and geological records, architectural plans, indigenous language documentation, photographs, newspapers and a vast collection of valuable ephemera.

Although the policy of the library has been to collect items that refer to the Northern Cape, Kimberley and its original inhabitants, plants, animals and history, it is home of remarkable Africana.

This includes an original letter of instruction to Jan van Riebeeck from the Lords of Chamber of Seventeen in Netherlands, and the Tswana Bible printed by Reverend Robert Moffat at the Mission Station in Kuruman from 1853 to 1857.

Vroue skep opnuut hoop

As dit reg versorg word, genees wonde.

Although a few volunteers already became involved and pledged their support, more help is needed – not only to plan the garden and the most suitable plants for the location, but also by donating plants and willing hands.

She emphasises that the Africana Library is seen as one of the most valuable research facilities in the country, with its research material accessible to researchers from all over the world, either through correspondence or in-person visits.

“A lot of the information in the Africana Library is not available online, and we want to feel proud of the garden as well when researchers, tourists, and local residents visit,” she says, pointing out the garden is a focal point before entering

This is the first-ever printing of the Bible in an African language. It also keeps a wide variety of early books on African languages, dating back to the 1830s.

Furthermore, an impressive special collection which consists of items dating back to the 1400s are also kept in the library. Questinas de Veritates (Questions and Answers) by Thomas Aquinas, printed in Latin in 1475, is the oldest book in the library.

The library has also published several fascinating books relating to Kimberley’s history. Funds from the book sales go into maintaining the library.

Braai-uitdrukking:

Ek wens ek kon haar antwoord.

Help jy of los jy?

Dit is slegs my mening.

Mense mag verskil.

Daar steek beslis waarheid in.

Julle is kosbaar.

Vriende bly ’n gawe

Vriende is inderdaad ’n gawe.

Skills shortages addressed

An Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) Academic Empowerment Initiative was recently launched in the Northern Cape.

This initiative marks a decisive step in transforming the EPWP from short-term employment into a platform for long-term empowerment. More than 600 EPWP participants across all five districts of the province can now pursue second-chance education, matric completion, computer literacy, and vocational skills training.

The Northern Cape Community Education and Training (CET) College, which operates 80 satellite campuses and seven computer lab centres, will deliver accredited training under the auspices of the Department of Higher Education and Training. This partnership ensures participants receive nationally recognised qualifications while addressing skills shortages in the provincial economy.

The launch on 6 September at the Tol Speelman Community Hall in Upington, was led by the premier, Dr Zamani Saul, alongside the MEC for Roads and Public Works, Fufe Makatong.

Saul emphasised the initiative is about creating pathways into sustainable employment and entrepreneurship, aligned with the Northern Cape 60 000 Jobs Plan for 2025–'29.

“For too long, the EPWP has been criticised as temporary relief. It can become a bridge to sustainable employment, skills, and entrepreneurship,” he said.

Makatong hailed the initiative as “a global best practice model” that integrates education, skills

development, and empowerment into EPWP delivery.

During the launch, several milestones were celebrated, including 25 participants of Disabled People South Africa receiving certificates under the New Venture Creation Programme, empowering them with entrepreneurial skills; seven EPWP learners who received certificates in End-User Computing; and 15 women contractors under incubation through Great Solutions powered by the National Home Builders Regulator Council (NHBRC) were recognised, strengthening women’s participation in the construction and housing sector.

Premier Saul said these achievements are a clear demonstration of the initiative's impact, ensuring that EPWP beneficiaries, especially women, youth, and people with disabilities, are empowered with education and the skills to contribute meaningfully to the economy of the Northern Cape and beyond.

Helde-ontvangs uitbundig

Committing to local development

The Lebelelang Disability Centre and the White City Library, two landmark social infrastructure projects in Postmasburg, were recently handed over to the Tsantsabane community.

This was done by Anglo American Kumba Iron Ore and showcases successful collaboration between business, government, and civil society. Support came from multiple stakeholders including the Department of Social Development, National Development Agency, Tsantsabane Local Municipality, Assmang Beeshoek, and Lesedi Solar.

Together worth R54 million, these projects are proof of how mining investment, when done in partnership, transforms communities.

Built on former dumping sites, Lebelelang has created 83 jobs while providing a safe, dignified space for persons with disabilities. The White City Library is now a hub of literacy,

digital access, and tertiary learning through the Sol Plaatje University (SPU).

Kumba Iron Ore’s social projects, rolling out as a part of their Social Labour Plans (SLPs), deliver safe and inclusive spaces for people with

disabilities, improving access to essential health services, and bringing literacy and skills development closer to home. The initiatives build on the delivery of sports and recreation facilities, as well as critical road and water infrastructure, which are strengthen-

New centre a launching pad

The impact of the newly-launched Centre for the Advancement of Rural and Inclusive Education and Research (Carier) at the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) in Kimberley signals the university's determination to shape the future of learning in the Northern Cape and surrounding regions, with an impact that will resonate nationally and globally.

This first research centre in the SPU's Faculty of Education was launched on 17 September.

In her address, Prof. Boitumelo Diale, dean of the Faculty of Education, rejected the notion that rural means inferior; celebrating it as unique, valuable, and deserving of excellence.

Prof. Anthony Brown of the University of South Africa’s (Unisa) School of Interdisci-

plinary Research and Graduate Studies, reminded guests that the Northern Cape presents a unique laboratory for inclusive education and called for a radical rethinking of urban-centric models. He urged that the new centre be a site of “pedagogical rebellion” that dismantles hierarchies, roots curricula in local realities, and proves that diversity is a source of strength.

Dr Kevin Teise, Carier’s acting director, gave an overview of its mission which is to redefine rural and inclusive education research by placing lived experiences at the centre of impactful scholarship.

Sandile Beuzana, chief director of School Management, Administration and Support for the Northern Cape Department of Education, stressed that inclusive classrooms enrich entire school environments

and called for research outputs to move into communities.

Prof. Debra Meyer, the SPU's acting vice-chancellor and principal, acknowledged the launch of Carier as a pioneering research centre at the university, joining the ranks of others such as the Arid Region Water Research Centre and the Centre for Creative Writing and African Languages. She outlined clear criteria for its success: quality publications, postgraduate achievements, external fundraising, and positioning the SPU as a hub of excellence in rural and inclusive education.

Prof. Jesmael Mataga, acting director for Research, quoted Epictetus, reminding the audience that “only the educated are free,” underscoring that education is the path to freedom and transformation.

ing community pride, mobility and resilience in surrounding communities.

“What matters most is not the buildings themselves, but how they serve and uplift the people of Tsantsabane. Our role is to walk alongside the community, ensuring our investments support education, inclusion and opportunity where they are needed most. These projects are a testament to what is possible when business, government, partners and communities work together.

“It shows the power of partnerships in delivering facilities that respond directly to community needs and create long-lasting impact,” said Mpumi Zikalala, chief executive officer (CEO) of Kumba Iron Ore.

In the first half of 2025, Kumba invested R135 million in social initiatives, supporting 670 jobs, more than 10 000 learners, and 330 teachers.

But the real story lies in the faces of children discovering books, families accessing clean water, and persons with disabilities stepping into a centre

built for their dignity and empowerment.

The two facilities are just two examples of Kumba’s ongoing commitment to community development within a much broader programme. This includes investments in inclusive sports infrastructure across the Sishen area, as well as essential road and water projects delivered in partnership with local municipalities. Collectively, these initiatives are enhancing daily life and building long-term resilience in surrounding communities.

The handover ceremony was attended by Gwede Mantashe, minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, and Dr Zamani Saul, premier of the Northern Cape, among other key stakeholders.

“Anglo American has been part of South Africa’s story for over a century. Our roots are firmly anchored here. Every day, we invest in people, communities and opportunity - building a legacy that uplifts and transforms lives”, concludes Zikalala.

Beaming with joy on behalf of children starting schooling journey

Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres play an important role in the development of young children. Key for stimulating physical growth, cognitive functions and social skills, ECDs are integral in establishing school readiness in children, and moulding an affinity towards education. Responding to an identified need, Kumba Iron Ore recently completed refurbishments at the Mpepe Thari Day Care centre in Siyathemba, which included improvements to the children’s play area and the installation of a back-up water system. Itumeleng Lute of Kumba Iron Ore said this was in line with Kumba’s sustainable mining plan, which envisions excellent education and training for children in host communities. Lena Mosang, who heads the centre, said these refurbishments would help a great deal in making sure that the education experience is enjoyable for the learners. Photo: Supplied

Bursary applications now open for submission

Education remains a cornerstone of development, which is why Kathu Solar Park established its bursary programme three years ago. Applications are now open for the 2026 intake, offering support to young people from the John Taolo Gaetsewe (JTG) District, which include Gamagara, Ga-Segonyana, and Joe Morolong. The programme has already made a significant impact, assisting more than 40 students since its inception.

“Our bursary initiative continues to open doors for youth across the district, providing access to tertiary education that might otherwise remain out of reach,” said Sandisiwe Mntonintshi, socio-economic development (SED) manager for Kathu Solar Park.

The 2026 intake will aim to enrol at least 20 students, although final numbers will be determined by the performance and progress of the current cohort. So far, bursary recipients have

pursued a broad range of qualifications, with popular choices including Accounting, Bachelor of Science programmes, and Education.

Kathu Solar Park invites applications from both prospective and current students registered at accredited South African public tertiary institutions including TVET colleges, universities of technology, and universities. Applicants must be South Afri-

can citizens residing within the JTG District. The value of each bursary is determined on an individual basis and may cover tuition, registration, and examination fees; accommodation in university or college residences (or equivalent); meals; learning materials such as textbooks and stationery.

Rugby cup glory was hard fought and long overdue Griquas hoist Currie Cup once more

The dramatic moment deep into injury time when George Whitehead, leading point-scorer in the 2025 Currie Cup season, clinched victory for the Griquas, will be etched in memories for a long time to come.

For the Griquas, who last lifted the prestigious Currie Cup 55 years ago in 1970, and who were denied glory in 2022 when the Pumas outmuscled them in the final on home turf, this long-awaited triumph was sweet and well deserved.

On Saturday, 20 September, roared on by thousands of supporters at the Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg, the Griquas stunned the Lions with a 27 25 victory to be crowned this year's Currie Cup champions in a heart-stopping finale.

According to griquas.co.za, the Peacock Blues laid down their marker from the opening whistle, signalling their championship intentions with intensity.

The Lions responded with trademark power, punishing errors and edging ahead to 17 - 14 by half-time.

According to griquasrugby.co.za: “The

second half was a war. Bodies on the line, every breakdown a battle. The Lions scored, we struck back. The scoreboard swung like a pendulum, but Griquas never lost faith. Just minutes from

glory, the Lions snatched the lead back with a late penalty.

“Some fans buried their faces. Some whispered prayers.

“Deep into injury time, with Ellis Park holding its breath, fate delivered one final chance. A deliberate knockdown penalty in the 83rd minute gave Griquas hope.”

It was then that Whitehead stepped up to the tee and split the uprights with a nerveless strike, setting the final score at 27 25.

Since the Lions had demolished the Griquas with a 37 7 thrashing on 6 September during round seven of the Currie Cup season, many pundits predicted this match would be a “one-sided final”, with little doubt about who would be hoisting the trophy.

But the Griquas clearly tore up that script. This match adds a fourth Currie Cup victory to the Griquas’ books, having previously claimed the trophy in 1899, 1911 and 1970.

According to sarugby.co.za, the Griquas’ journey to championship glory reflected months of hard work, tactical precision and the fighting spirit that defines the essence of Carling Currie Cup rugby.

In his message, Mark Alexander, president of SA Rugby, congratulated the Griquas on making history in Johannesburg with a never-say-die attitude that will inspire generations to come.

“Your triumph ends a 55-year wait and is a testament to perseverance, belief and the power of unity,” he remarked.
