kompetisie beskryf. Internasionale volgelinge van dié platform vra wie hy is en waar hy vandaan kom.
“I reckon he’d be able to juggle a few small elephants,” lui ’n inskrywing. ’n Ander een skryf: “Never heard of him!” Nog een beskryf hom as “WSM Rayno the Rhino Nel”.
Kommentaar van Suid-Afrikaners is maklik onderskeibaar: “Give him a Bok jersey,” waarop iemand reageer met: “Where would you get a Bok jersey to fit him?” ’n Ander een vra: “Can we get him to do farm patrols?”
Nog kommentaar met ’n
Suid-Afrikaanse smaak is: “Is this a Spur advertisement? Because I can taste it...” en “His strength is from all the Checkers bags he needed to carry,” ook “That’s what you get when you let the farmer loose…” en “Rayno does strongman on the side. He works a full time job as an electrical engineer. Impressive to say the least.”
Suid-Afrikaanse ondersteuners skryf ook: “Wow! Now that’s a shocker! I expected this to be a 4th title for Tom Stoltman. Really happy for my South African brother though,” en “Very proud of this. First time someone has represented my hometown of Upington, internationally.” Nog ’n Suid-Afrikaner raai Nel aan: “Please come
back home to boerewors, poikie kos, biltong, koeksisters. I don't trust Donald Trump, and your nickname is Rhino.”

’n Man, oorspronklik
The Gamalakhe team is bringing their beloved blankets and teas to communities across the Northern Cape and Free State.
As the team had a phenomenal response at Bloem Show and the Langenhoven Market in Bloemfontein, they are preparing to visit Kimberley and surrounding towns, including Daniëlskuil, Barkly West, Kathu and Kuruman.
Gama’s mission has always been simple: to put a blanket on every bed in South Africa.
“We believe that every South African deserves a cosy, restful night, especially during the chilly winter months,” says the team, remarking that customers often say, “A great blanket is better than a good shoe.”
On this the team agrees.
Therefore, whether thick and cozy, or light and soft, Gama blankets come in all sizes and styles to suit every preference.
The signature two-ply and single-ply mink blankets, along with comfy throws, are now firm favourites across the country. These throws are perfect for movie nights, or power cuts.
Gama offers customers an online store with a difference, while its team hit the road, attending markets and exhibitions for people to experience the warmth in person.
The heart of the team is the cheerful couple Anastatia and Vikash. Friendly, approachable and passionate, they connect effortlessly with every customer.
Vikash is even learning Afrikaans – much to the delight of communities – and his charm and effort are always met with warm laughter and kind conversations.
“What a joy it has been to meet so many wonderful people who love our products and appreciate the unbeatable quality and value we bring,” says the team.
To add to the experience customers can expect form Gama, free samples of delicious imported teas from Mauritius will be offered. Think vanilla, caramel and other delightful flavours. This is the perfect winter combo: A soft, warm blanket and a comforting cup of tea.

A food drive has been organised to assist the dedicated staff members at the Helen Bishop Orthopaedic Aftercare Home in Kimberley who have not received salaries since April, due to financial constraints.
These staff are taking care of 62 children with special needs and profound disabilities who require constant assistance and support for basic daily living. Staff members are on duty 24 hours a day.
Although a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the home and the Northern Cape Department of Health (DOH) was signed on Friday, 16 May, staff still do not know when they will receive payment. The last payment they received was on 9 April, when they were paid for March.
Wherever they go, the team is met with open arms, big smiles and stories that warm the heart.
“As we prepare to visit Kimberley and surrounding towns, we invite everyone to come meet us.”
The Gamalakhe team will be at the monthly Kimberley Market at the Big Hole on Saturday, 31 May, from 10:00. They accept cash, card and EFTs.
Local businesses interested in stocking Gama blankets can reach out to Vikash or Anastatia.
“We would love to work together to keep even more South Africans warm this winter,” the team says.

Due to previous MoUs, the DOH paid a subsidy for staff support and administrative needs. The latest MoU signed will be valid for a year, commencing on 16 May. Still, when the first payment can be expected, is unsure. For the children, the Helen Bishop Home gets a subsidy from the Department of Social Development. Most of the staff members at the home are the bread-winners of their families, with school-going children. They have to come to work hungry, knowing they cannot provide for their families. They are assisted by the Helen Bishop Home as far as possible, but with the home’s limited income, it is a constant struggle for survival while proper care for the children with severe disabilities remains a priority.
To assist these staff members, an urgent request is made by the Helen Bishop Home management board to donate non-perisable food products, as well as any other items, which the staff can use to support their families.
“We are reaching out in a time of need. We kindly ask for your support to show them love and appreciation. These selfless caregivers work tirelessly to nurture our vulnerable children, often sacrificing time with their own families. Your kindness would mean the world to them,” the management board said. Cash can also be donated. Visit the Facebook page Helen Bishop Orthopaedic After-Care Home for bank details.
Donations can be delivered at the Helen Bishop Home at 34 Church Road, Utility, Kimberley. Alternatively, dial 053 831 2447.

Omdat Ebrencia se lewe in

Denise Coetzee, kliënt-ervaringbestuurder by Mediclinic
“Ek sal dit altyd met my saamdra.”
Ebrencia beskryf die ervaring in geheel as “genade onbeskryflik groot”.

dit by te woon.
Bywoning is gratis.
Kobus van Tonder by kobusvt04@gmail.com of Estie Botha by estie@caritas.org.za.
Volgens wyle prof. Hans du Plessis spreek inwoners ’n enkel “a” as ’n lang klank uit.
■ So doof soos ’n klipsteen.
■ So droog soos ’n bokkom.
■ So gierig soos ’n stronkvuur.
■ So maer soos ’n kapstok.
■ So rooi soos ’n kalkoen.
■ So seker soos amen in die kerk.
■ So skaars soos leeuvere.
■ So vas soos ’n muis in ’n kalbas.
■ So welkom soos ’n kat in die melkkamer.
■ So sout soos brem.

Dis ’ie anner spanne wat so mors.”

Laat dit so wees.
KARIN MULLER
Dit begin by krummelgrootte inligting.
Dinge verander waar mense doen. Praat as jy wil praat, maak jou video’s en lewer jou kommentaar; maar as jy wys is, doen meer as wat jy praat.

“Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.” – Terry Pratchett, A Hat Full of Sky
Tas pak is ’n wetenskap én ’n kuns.
Moet hy iets formeels neem as daar genoeg geld is vir ’n duur restaurant?

Steve Lunderstedt, author, world-renowned military historian and tour guide, says his Saturday market at the Moth Centre in Kimberley is not just a treasure trove of books, but a gathering of like-minded souls.
“Printed books will never die. In fact, the book market is growing,” he says.
“I love the feel of paper, paging through a book, as well as the smell of the ink. So do thousands of other like-minded people. Kindle will never have the same fascination or satisfaction.”
He says Steve’s Bookstore was born out of necessity when the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown put a stop to his historical tours. He previously owned bookstores and antique shops, but the rent and other costs were inhibiting.
“I have attended markets on and off since the 1980s. I am down to 16 000 books now, although I have owned between 22 000 and 24 000 books. I would rather give books to the library than throw them out.”
It is not easy to prepare for markets – packing books out in the morning, only to pack it away four hours later. Some days no books find new owners.
“I concentrate on non-fiction, mostly Southern African, be it about wars, biographies, sport and so on. I regard the fiction books as the bread and butter and the non-fiction as the ice cream and jam.
“Depending on the condition, I determine the price. You might be a brilliant author, but if your book is in poor condi-
tion it will go for much less.”
He finds his stock at second-hand shops everywhere, or people call him when houses are cleared.
One treasure he found was at a second-hand shop in Cradock. It was the complete set of sought-after first edition, mint-condition books of Lawrence Green, whose father
“was the prince of journalists in South Africa, being the editor of the Diamond Fields Advertiser”.
“I bought the box for R50. That is probably the best buy I have ever done.”
Green was a renowned travel writer and investigative journalist, born during the Siege of Kimberley. He left Kimberley when he was ten years old. Green would travel extensively and interview old people while he was still reasonably young. He documented stories from the 1860s and 1880s from interviewing these people. Green travelled throughout the interior of Southern Africa and up the Atlantic seaboard.
Another good find was when Lunderstedt was informed on
books thrown out in an alleyway in Kimberley.
“I found an original copy of the science-fiction handmade book by William Timlin called The Ship that Sailed to Mars Timlin was a well-known architect and made about 20 of this particular book. He made all the sketches and did the calligraphy.”
Although the book was worth thousands of rands, Lunderstedt donated it to the William Humphreys Art Gallery (Whag), who had it restored.
“Each one of Timlins’ books is a work of art combined with literature.”
His Saturday markets are enjoyable, talking to people about interesting topics and history.
“We talk on a variety of subjects, which is good for the soul. Books will never die. Load shedding and the recent blackouts in Spain and Portugal, where there was no power for electronic devices, made me realise it again.
“With books you can still sit in the sun and read, or have a chat with people about the wonder of printed matter.”

The Kimberley Boys’ High School (KHS) celebrated 138 years of existence during a Founders’ Weekend from 16 to 18 May. Recently, Charné Kemp posed a few questions to Xolile Taba, headmaster, who says they put the school’s motto, “Per Labores ad Honores”, into practice: “Through Labour come Honour”.
What is the core mission and vision? How is it implemented?
The KHS has a five-year strategic plan: “Transforming KHS from good to great in my space.”
This focuses on hiring quality staff, enhancing academic and extracurricular facilities, and modernising teaching and learning.
The Representative Council of Learners (RCL) and reintroduced prefect system helped rally learners, reinforce the school ethos, and promote positivity in and beyond the classroom.
Since your appointment, what new projects were launched?
Renovation and building projects commenced the minute l arrived at the school in 2021.
The infrastructure saw a complete school repainting, paved entrance, renovated hostel, swimming pool buildings, pavilion, and modernised classrooms. An astro-turf development with the Diamantveld High School is underway, the KHS hosts soccer for Absa Wildeklawer, and the Founders’ Weekend was redefined with the introduction of the KHS Half-marathon.
Prize-giving was revamped with
awards exceeding R200 000, benchmarking introduced, and discipline systems were strengthened. What are the biggest, current challenges?
Non-payment of school fees remains a challenge, prompting the creation of third-income streams to keep the school financially stable. School fee exemptions were redesigned to benefit truly deserving students.
How does your school promote inclusivity?
We have an LGBTQ+ community that is recognised as such. We have gained community respect by allowing the boys (Amakrwala) from initiation schools (Umoluko) to wear traditional regalia for a limited time.
Are there any recent achievements your school is proud of?
We just hosted the 2025 version of the Absa Wildeklawer Soccer
Tournament with a total of 20 schools. Our hostel that was renovated to international standards is a great part of our third economic stream, and the KHS introduced the biggest half marathon in the province in 2024. It attracted over 800 athletes in 2024 and pulled an even bigger crowd on Saturday, 17 May. The latest block of classrooms boasts a state of the art computer room and e-lab built in Victorian architecture. What steps are taken to prioritise mental health and well-being for learners and staff?
The school works closely with the Department of Education (DoE), Social Services, as well as Caritas and Famsa. It has measures such as internal SGB promotional posts to cater for exceptional educators who cannot be absorbed into the DoE. Branded staff regalia and social events boost staff morale. How is technology and innovation incorporated into the curriculum?
The KHS has adopted a multifaceted digital approach to modern education. Interactive learning encompasses a web-based platform used from Gr.8 to Gr.12, offering technical math, literature, science, and spatial skills. A Virtual Autumn Camp from 31 March to 4 April helped Gr.12 learners complete their syllabus early, enabling thorough revision before exams.
Teachers utilise projectors, Smart boards, and virtual whiteboards to enrich lessons.
Learners engage in the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) Robotics Club,
gaining expertise in coding, design, and problem-solving.
How is safety and security ensured on campus?
With the help of the DoE, the school invested in a surround surveillance system, which has cameras all over the school to allow monitoring. The school appointed a security company to monitor and control traffic into the school, and the teachers, prefects, and the RCL are at all times alert to any adverse issues. During break, educators patrol the yard. Our police Adopt-aCop officer is on standby to support the school whenever assistance is needed.
How are learners prepared for future challenges?
From time to time, institutions are invited to talk on relevant topics, including career choices and social issues. Learners are invited to stakeholders such as the SPU where they engage with students and lecturers. Our Interact Club, KHS Science Club and Media Club are constantly invited into the community. What qualities do you value most in your teaching staff, and how do you support their growth?
We value task-bound, not timebound, employees; that take leave with consideration of the work and learners they are leaving behind. Our educators should be mentors, as well as teachers to our learners. Teachers are encouraged to take up next level work to aid their growth at school. Embracing the school vision is at the top of desired qualities in our teachers.
