Dumping undermines efforts for cleaner Kimberley
Clean-up or pile-up?
HELENA BARNARD
Illegal dumping is no longer only a frustration and cause of concern for a minority of Kimberley residents.
From all suburbs, cries of despair, anger and utter frustration are heard on illegal dumping, which keeps increasing.
In Kimberley, the capital of the Northern Cape, there are nearly no open pieces of land without a heap of rubbish.
This contains garden refuse, household waste, construction material, rotten food, take-away wrappers, bottles, and even items such as broken basins and plastic chairs, as well as dead animals.
In many instances this rubbish is burnt, causing toxic-like smoke and a further fire-hazard.
The premier of the Northern Cape, Dr Zamani Saul, said on several occasions that Kimberley is the face of the province, and that it must set an example to the other municipalities.
On Friday, 18 July, which was observed as Mandela Day, cleaning of the city was once again in the spotlight.
That cleaning is not only the responsibility of municipalities, but of every resident, was the overall message of the day.

For the Kimberley City Clean-Up Campaign joined by amongst other the province’s Department Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, and the Northern Cape Economic
Development, Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Nceda) a call was made to “every business, resident, and community member to roll up their sleeves and take pride in Kim-

berley”.
“Clean in front of you, even the businesses. Suburbs must look after their places,” says Venus Blennies-Magage, MEC of the Northern Cape Department of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism.
She says it is high time that campaigns are again introduced in schools and that children are taught from a young age that littering is wrong. People must also be reminded time and time again that dumping rubbish is not acceptable.
Thami Mabija, head of the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, says people must be encouraged to keep their own space clean. Mabija emphasises that a cleaner environment, city or town, can attract more tourists. Tourists, he says, do not like dirty environments.
“Cleaning must not only be on Mandela Day and a once-off. It must be an everyday collaboration to bring Kimberley and the Northern Cape back to where tourism can grow.
“It is important to get together to clean. Cleaning is not only the responsibility of the Sol Plaatje Municipality,
but of you and me.”
This is the opinion of Nompumelelo Mpata, board chairperson of Nceda.
According to her, collaborative efforts of cleaning on a more regular basis will have a positive impact, saying that bylaws need to be strengthened. The importance of a clean environment, and keeping it clean, must be a message that everyone should hear from a young age.
Thabo Mothibi, spokesperson and communication head of the Sol Plaatje Municipality, said previously that the municipality is revising the entire bylaws regime.
“A workshop was held in May, and the documents are with lawyers.” Mothibi says the municipality is doing its utmost best to collect refuse as per weekly schedule.
“However, we have had breakdowns recently, and the procurement of new trucks is in the works.”
He also remarked that illegal dumping is becoming a wide-spread problem in the city.
On a question of fires where residents burn rubbish in open spaces, he says that is prohibited and poses a danger.
“We urge communities to utilise WhatsApp groups in raising alarm over the violation of bylaws and to report transgressions to their councillors.” – Read the stories on p. 2.

Rommel kweek onheil
HELENA BARNARD

Euwels baljaar in park
HELENA BARNARD
By elke oefenpunt was ’n bord met oefenaanwysings.

Ná samesprekings is hy by die muni-

Bag some accumulated waste
On Friday, 18 July, in Kimberley, officials of several government departments took part in a clean-up campaign, with cleaning done at several points in the central business district. Some of the officials in the parking area of the Kimberley Magistrates’ Court are, from the left, middle row: Nompumelelo Mpata (board chairperson of the Northern Cape Economic Development, Trade and Investment Promotion Agency), Thami Mabija (HOD of the Department of Economic Development and Tourism) and Venus Blennies-Magage (MEC for the Northern Cape Department of

Besoek laat spoor in hart
Hy sê enigeen kan skenk, hetsy kosprodukte, klere, skoolklere of -benodigdhede. Bel hom by 073 198 3506 of volg Walk-By-Faith Soup Kitchen op Facebook. Banding together for brighter future
In honour of Mandela Day and to invest in the future of the Ulco and Delportshoop communities, Traxtion, AfriSam and the Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) joined forces. Activities focused on beneficiaries identified through a local needs analysis: the Ulco Primary School, the Delportshoop Intermediate School and the Delportshoop Community Library.
Refurbishments included painting and ceiling repairs in Gr.R classrooms, the revamping of a Gr.R playground, and the donation of school uniforms. Ten computers preloaded with Microsoft software were also donated.
“Mandela Day reminds us

Joining forces are, from the left, Tshepo Mothoagae (chief information officer at the Railway Safety Regulator), Azola Hlaula (packing and dispatch manager at AfriSam), Johana Seno (assistant librarian at the Delportshoop Library) and Nnoni Mohlaphuli (brand, communications and marketing manager at Traxtion).
Juweeltjie
Sneeu, kapok of ysreën?
Vreemde spreekwoord:

Asblikke word gesteel, of gevandaliseer.

Hy kon
Erken volle omvang
KARIN MULLER

Food fest boasts Victorian flair
HELENA BARNARD
A variety of stalls selling freshly home-made food, with orchestral music in the background, will characterise the first-ever Christmas in July Food Festival taking place at Rudd House in Kimberley.
During this festival visitors can experience a relaxed atmosphere while shopping for mouth-watering dishes between the different stalls. Food purchased can either be taken home, or enjoyed on the premises.
Gayle Kotzé of Slice of Nice, which recently opened its doors in the McGregor Museum, says those who pay a R25 fee to enter Rudd House can enjoy their meal in the dining room of this Victorian house. Festive tables will be set inside. The entrance fee goes to the McGregor Museum.
Kotzé says only freshly prepared food will be for sale, such as oxtail-in-a-tin, oxtail-piebaked-in-a-tin and Italian style meatballs; with favourites such as samoosas, pancakes, sausage rolls, and more, on the menu. Mock-
tails, hot chocolate and more will also be sold.
Rudd House is renowned for its well-preserved Victorian architectural features, including intricate woodwork, high ceilings, and grand staircases. It is surrounded by verandahs and is lavishly furnished. Outside the house is a gigantic fig tree. The house is a typical example of a residence built for wealthy people during the 19th century, and was donated to the McGregor Museum in 1971.
This food festival is part of the McGregor Museum’s vision to deviate from static and formal visits to museums, enabling people to get acquainted with museums in an informal way. More exciting events are in the planning phases.
Kotzé says there is still space for a few stalls at the festival. Those who are interested can contact Cassi Warren for more information, as no stalls will be duplicated.
The festival commences at 16:00 on Friday, 25 July, and is expected to end at 20:00. Rudd House is situated at 5 Loch Road in Belgravia, Kimberley. Call Warren on 082 839 7237.

‘Inkopies’ vol vreugde
HELENA BARNARD

Diamonds shine brighter
HELENA BARNARD
The Northern Cape Diamonds managed to move up two positions during this year’s Telkom Netball League (TNL).
Starting the tournament in position nine of division 2, the Diamonds climbed to position seven.
Team manager Pulane Mokoena says the Diamonds have really proven themselves.
“There is a huge improvement in their performance,” Mokoena says, commenting that even the margins of the scores of the matches they lost, became smaller.
Defeat does not stop them from giving their best, made evident by the Diamonds receiving five player of the match awards.
In their final match of the TNL’s power week 3 on Friday, 18 July, the Diamonds beat the Limpopo Lilies with 51 34, while Andiswa Dlamini, goal attack, claimed her second player of the match award. Dlamini received her first award on 2 May when the Diamonds had their first

win of 51 47 against the Free State Sonoblomo.
On 16 July, Diamonds’ Amnkelekile Malambile, wing attack and centre, also bagged a player of the match award when her team beat the Limpopo Lilies by 46 35.
On 17 June, during the Dia-
monds’ second victory, of 43 37 against the Eastern Cape Comets, Asive Ntsendwana, goal defence, was announced player of the match.
On 28 April, centre Senestie Ponie had been the first of the Diamonds to grab a player of the
match award for the TNL season.
The TNL commenced on 26 April at the Sun City Superbowl in the North West, and concluded on 20 July at the Durban International Centre Complex. The league was determined over three power weeks.
