Crime statistics a concerning affair

Those concerned with the disheartening fourth quarter crime statistics for 2024-25 for the Northern Cape includes the premier, Dr Zamani Saul; provincial police commissioner, Lt Gen. Koliswa Otola; MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Limakatso Koloi; and the South African Police Union (Sapu).

The crime statistics for the Northern Cape was released on 10 June.

For the fourth quarter, murder increased with 21 reported cases compared to the previous year’s 91 to 112 cases. Most were males with 87 victims, 17 females, and eight children.

The top 30 murder stations include seven stations in the Frances Baard District, seven in Pixley Ka Seme, seven in ZF Mgcawu, six in John Taolo Gaetsewe, and three in Namakwa.

The Frances Baard District recorded the highest serious crime statistics regarding the reported 17 community crimes, which reflected an increase of

1,5% (eight cases less), severe assault increased with 4,2% (82 cases) and common assault increased with 1,4% (21) cases.

A total of 415 cases of aggravating robberies were reported, a decrease of 5,5% (24 cases less). Aggravating robberies such as carjacking remained constant with 12 cases, while robbery at residential premises decreased with two cases, and robbery at non-residential premises increased from 47 cases to 49.

Otola emphasised the importance of reporting incidents of extortion to ensure that cases are thoroughly investigated and perpetrators apprehended. She commended detectives for securing convictions and hefty imprisonment sentences, including several life sentences.

Argumente, misverstande, padwoede en uitlokking bly die hoofoorsake van die moordsake wat die polisie in die Noord-Kaap in die vierde kwartaal van 2024-’25 ondersoek het.

Volgens die misdaadstatistiek wat verlede week uitgereik is, het moorde in Januarie tot Maart vanjaar van 91 tot 112 toegeneem in vergelyking met verlede jaar dieselfde tydperk. Slegs een van die moorde het tydens ’n rooftog plaasgevind. Die meeste is in openbare ruimtes gepleeg, en die tweede meeste in die huis van hetsy die slagoffer of die oortreder. Vier moorde is in tavernes of nagklubs gepleeg.

Twee moorde is op landbougrond gepleeg. In die een geval in die Augrabies-omgewing het ’n geveg tussen twee plaaswerkers uitgebreek

waartydens die een die ander verskeie kere gesteek het. In die ander geval in die Rosedale-omgewing het ’n 22-jarige vrou haar 44-jarige vriend met ’n skerp voorwerp gesteek wat tot sy dood gelei het. In die uitvoering van die moorde was ’n mes die mees algemene wapen (in 54 gevalle), terwyl ’n vuurwapen, skerp voorwerp of liggaamsdele soos hande of voete elk in vier moordgevalle gebruik is. Stomp voorwerpe, asook stene of klippe, is ook gebruik.

Aangemelde verkragtings in die tydperk het met vyf gevalle toegeneem, vanaf 297 tot 302. Die meeste verkragtings is by die Mothibistad-polisiekantoor aangemeld en die tweede meeste in Galeshewe, gevolg deur die Kimberley-polisiekantoor, en dan Postmasburg.

Hoewel ’n donker prentjie oor die aarde se gesondheid heers, kan vooruitsigte verbeter indien mense by organisasies betrokke raak en vir ’n regering stem wat werklik vir die voortbestaan van fauna en flora, en mensegesondheid omgee.

Só sê Fritz Bekker, uitvoerende direkteur van Gariep Watch. Hy sê ’n regering wat nie meer vir die omgewing en die mense omgee nie, is die grootste bedreiging vir omgewingsgesondheid.

“Mense moet by organisasies soos ons aansluit en

betrokke raak by veral plaaslike politiek om te verseker dat ’n regering verkies word wat vir die mens en die natuur omgee.”

Gariep Watch is ’n nie-regeringsorganisasie wat poog om aanvaarbare watergehalte in die laer Vaalen Oranjerivier te verseker deur gereelde watergehaltemonitering te doen.

“Ons ekonomiese groei wat reeds uiters traag is, word ook benadeel deur die swak gehalte van ons water. Geen nywerheidsektor, soos die myn- en landboubedryf, kan gedy as watergehalte swak is nie.”

Met sy jarelange navorsing, ook op die Oranjerivier, het hy bevind waterhulpbronne “gaan met rasse skrede agteruit”.

“Self in standhoudende riviere maak die swak gehalte dit ongeskik vir menslike gebruik en om mense se ekonomiese bedrywighede te onderhou. Rioolbesoedeling is die grootste probleem met patogene organismes wat deur die rivierstelsels na waterverbruikers versprei word.

“Hierdie mikrobiologiese besmetting behels skadelike mikrobes wat bakterieë, virusse, parasiete en

swamme insluit. Die grond word ook deur besmette besproeiingswater besoedel, wat nitrate en stikstof bevat wat gevaarlik is vir menslike gesondheid en akwatiese ekosisteme.”

Hy sê die regering is die grootste besoedelaar en die oorsaak van probleme omdat omgewingswetgewing nie afgedwing word nie.

Die staat se enorme salarisrekening wat jaarliks meer as die inflasiesyfer groei, veroorsaak dat min geld oorbly vir navorsing, instandhouding en modernisering. Kaderontplooiing het veroorsaak dat amptenare met institusionele kennis vervang is met onbeholpe amptenare. Selfs al is daar bevoegde amptenare in diens, is daar nie geld oor vir hulle om hul werk behoorlik te kan doen nie.

“Die situasie kan net verander as daar burgerlike herlewing plaasvind en kiesers besef hul regering gee nie meer om nie. Hulle moet uit verantwoordelikheid teenoor hulself ’n regeringsverandering meebring,” sê Bekker.

Snye vol lekkerte vul ‘leemte’ by museum

Die grootste leemte wat besoekers aan die McGregor-museum in Kimberley uitgewys het, word nou gevul met ’n verskeidenheid gegeurde brode, pasteie, koeke, terte, patees en ander tuisgebakte produkte deur ’n ma-en-dogterspan.

Sedert Slice of Nice, koffiewinkel en delikatessen, in Mei sy deure by die museum oopgemaak het, kan besoekers in ’n museum-atmosfeer vertoef en die innerlike versterk.

Sunet Swanepoel, uitvoerende direkteur van die museum, vertel dat ma en dogter, Gayle Kotzé en Cassi Warren, ’n geruime tyd reeds ’n stalletjie by die liefdadigheidsmark gehad het.

Dié mark vind elke eerste Saterdag van die maand by die museum in Atlasstraat plaas.

Omdat die museumbestuur bewus was van die leemte van ’n koffiewinkel wat deur besoekers aan die museum uitgewys is, en omdat Slice of Nice se produkte hul goedkeuring weggedra het, is Kotzé en Warren gekontak om op ’n gereelde grondslag verversings by die museum te verkoop.

“Ek het jare lank probeer om brood te bak, maar het bakstene gebak,” vertel Kotzé.

’n kurator aan die McGregor-museum. As lid van die Suid-Afrikaanse Museumvereniging (Sama) is dit vir haar ’n passie om meer lede van die publiek na museums te lok.

“Dit is ook nodig om van statiese en formele besoeke af te wyk,” vertel McAnda. So is daar in Desember verlede jaar ’n aansit-aandete, ’n eerste in sy soort, in die historiese Dunluce-huis aangebied, ’n satellietmuseum van die McGregor. Dié ete is op versoek van Andrew (Benji) Benjamin toegestaan, en hy het die driegangmaaltyd voorberei. Benjamin en sy spanmaat het onlangs ’n tweede plek in die reeks Kokkedoor: Vuur & Vlam verwerf.

“Baie van die mense wat die ete bygewoon het, was nog nooit in ’n museum nie,” sê McAnda.

“Op ’n dag kry ek dit reg, en Cassi het ook begin bak. Sy het ’n basiese broodresep ontwikkel, en vroeg verlede jaar van die huis op bestelling begin bak. Sy het met gegeurde brode begin eksperimenteer en ’n industriële oond aangeskaf.”

In dié tyd het hulle Mona Ditlow, organiseerder van die maandelikse Market for Charity, gekontak om ’n markstalletjie op te rig, en só het hul paadjie tot in die ruimte langs die museum se voordeur geloop.

“Cassi is gaande oor die gebakkery, en is altyd besig om iets nuuts uit te toets,” sê Kotzé.

FOCUS ON: LIFTUP TELEPORTER MINING

Kotzé is geen onbekende in Kimberley nie – sy het in 1998 die destydse Wolsentrum in die stad gekoop. Dit het later na die perseel in Angelstraat verskuif en is Lavender and Lace genoem.

“Vir 22 jaar was dit my passie, maar op ’n dag het ek besluit dit is nou klaar,” vertel sy.

Laat waai met sonderlinge Noord-Kaapse pret en vermaak

’n Unieke geleentheid eie aan die Noord-Kaap, die Askham Boeresport-dag, word oor minder as ’n maand in dié uithoek van die provinsie aangebied. KUNS IN KALAHARI ONTGIN

Die landkuns-kunstenaar Anni Snyman beoog om betrokke te raak by die kunsweek later vanjaar in Van Zylsrus in die Kalahari. Snyman wil ’n aasvoëllandmerk hier skep om aasvoëlbewaring te ondersteun. Die terrein is reeds toegeken. Boonop word dié landskapkuns geregistreer en is dit op aarde-apps sigbaar. Dié kunsweek, eerste in sy soort, sal waarskynlik vroeg Oktober aangebied word. Dit is die idee van kunstenaar Pieter Pienaar, afgetrede kunsonderwyser en stigterslid van die kunste-gebaseerde onderneming Bridge Co-Creatives. Pienaar bedryf dit saam met ’n kunskollega, Carol Preston.

Tydens die kunsweek word kuns, Kalahari en gasvryheid kombineer. Plaaslike inwoners wat wil teken of verf, word ook betrek. Kunstenaars, fotograwe, musikante, digitale skeppers en ander skeppendes word genooi om skeppend in die Kalahari te wees.

Skram weg van onkunde, leer elke dag iets nuuts

Met van die kommentaar wat op verlede week se voorbladberig gelewer is, het die aanhalings “No knowledge is ever wasted,” en “A day without learning is a day wasted,” in die gedagtes opgekom.

Soos dit op sosialemediaplatforms gaan, is snedige opmerkings gelewer deur dié in onkunde. Die berig het oor die botaniese tuin gehandel wat in die Oppenheimer-tuine in Kimberley gevestig gaan word. Benewens dat die projek deur die Sol Plaatje-universiteit gedoen gaan word, is dié tuine in die universiteit se besit. Dit word nié meer deur die Sol Plaatje-munisipaliteit besit nie.

Juis hier kom onkunde na vore: In sovele kommentare word die universiteit met die munisipaliteit verwar, soos dat “Sol Plaatje” eerder slaggate moet regmaak. Die Sol Plaatje-universiteit is wel net 11 jaar gelede geopen, maar enigeen in die stad moes al agtergekom het dat “iets aan die gang is” rakende konstruksie.

Sommige wat wel besef dat die universiteit ’n werklikheid is, fokus op studente se oproerige en morsjors-gedrag. Terloops, studentebetogings is nie in Suid-Afrika of in Afrika “uitgedink” nie. Van die vroegste aangetekende studentebetogings was rondom 1229 by die

Universiteit van Parys in Frankryk. Morsjorsgedrag van enigiemand, asook vandalisme, kan nie goedgepraat word nie. Tog, nie alle studente is morsjorse of vandale nie. Om op die kampus van die Sol Plaatje-universiteit ’n draai te maak kan kritici dalk tot ander insigte bring.

Terug na die aanhalings soos genoem. Amerikaner Ben Carson sr., afgetrede neurochirurg, akademikus, en meer, was die neurochirurg wat die eerste suksesvolle skeidingsoperasie tussen ’n siamese tweeling uitgevoer het. Dié slim man het gesê: “No knowledge is ever wasted.”

Albert Einstein, onder meer die vader van die relatiwiteitsteorie, het gesê: “A day without learning is a day wasted. There is so much to learn and so little time to learn it.”

En ene Sarita Bahl, onder meer ’n lewensafrigter van Swede: “The human brain has infinite capacity to learn new things. When you learn new things, the neurons in your brain multiply and grow. Challenging your brain keeps it younger and vibrant.”

Ten laaste, sir Karl Popper, ’n OostenryksBritse filosoof en akademikus, het gesê: “True ignorance is not the absence of knowledge, but the refusal to acquire it.”

Elkeen van ons is onkundig oor talle aspekte, maar kom ons wees tog gewillig om nuwe kennis op te doen.

Ons begin sommer so informeel met mekaar gesels. Kinders, grootmense, almal in een groep.

Die gesprek lei spontaan na hoe ’n warm kombers in die koue nie vanselfsprekend is nie. Die kombers is ’n stukkie genade. En ’n mus op die kop en ’n trui om warm te bly. Die lysie word net langer en langer. Ek is later verstom. Wanneer ’n mens dink oor alles wat nie vanselfsprekend is nie, dan word ’n mens skaam oor wat ’n mens het. Almal het nie

ewe veel nie, almal kry ook nie ewe maklik nie.

Maar elkeen van ons in die groep het genoeg dinge wat ons vanselfsprekend ag – wat nie vanselfsprekend is nie.

Beskutting teen die koue is maar een daarvan. Om te kan eet is ook nie vanselfsprekend nie.

Om te mag, en te kan, werk is ook nie vanselfsprekend nie.

Ons begin daarvan ’n speletjie maak, al in die rondte: Noem iets in jou huis, iets by jou werkplek of skool, iets in jou menswees, iets in die veranderinge van seisoene, iets wat tel as ’n stukkie bederf, mense om jou.

Ons hou aan en aan. Wat my opval, is dat niemand verveeld raak met die speletjie nie, en

Van kleins af word my verjaardag, om verskillende redes, ’n hele paar weke lank gevier. ’n Hele paar dekades later duur die patroon steeds voort.

Ek aanvaar dit is by baie ander mense ook die geval.

’n Paar weke voor tot ’n paar weke ná my verjaardag kry ek boodskappe van gelukwensing.

’n Goeie vriend het my op ’n tyd gekontak.

“Ek weet ek bel jou ’n maand ná jou verjaardag, maar ek wou net seker maak ek is die laaste een wat jou gelukwens.”

Ek het gelag.

“Jy mag erken dat jy van my verjaardag vergeet het, dit gaan nie ons vriendskap beïnvloed nie.”

Al hierdie boodskappe en oproepe is vir my baie spesiaal – al is dit die verkeerde dag of verkeerde maand.

Dit beteken dat daar iewers iemand is wat aan my dink en die moeite doen om ’n boodskap te

stuur.

Mense is besig.

Baie dae gaan verby dat mense nie eens seker is watter dag van die week of maand dit is nie.

Daar is uitdagings. Daar is sperdatums.

Ons brein word deur ’n magdom inligting oorspoel.

Vir iemand om in hierdie dolle gejaag ’n oomblik tot stilstand te kom en ’n verjaardagwens te stuur is kosbaar.

Ek raak dus kinderlik ongelukkig wanneer ek van my kant af die moeite doen om ’n verjaardagwens te stuur en iemand reageer met: “Dit was gister,” of “Dit is eers môre.”

Maak dit regtig saak?

Ek twyfel of daar mense is wat doelbewus op die verkeerde datum ’n verjaardagboodskap sal stuur. Help iemand reg wat jou verjaardagdatum verkeerd het – as jy meen dit is die aangewese ding om te doen.

Maar is dit nie minder doringagtig om net ’n woord van dankbaarheid op ’n opreg bedoelde boodskap terug te stuur nie?

niemand se idees raak op nie. Die slotsom is dus eenvoudig: Daar is so baie dinge wat jy as vanselfsprekend kan ag, maar wat nie vanselfsprekend is nie. Jy kan soveel as moontlik temas daaraan koppel, maar jou lysie sal nie klaar raak nie. ’n Mens het nie altyd alles wat jy benodig nie, maar jy het baie meer as wat jy oor dink.

Ons moet ’n bietjie onthou hoe baie ons het. Ons moet ’n bietjie daaroor nadink dat niks vanselfsprekend is nie.

Wanneer jy ’n bietjie gaan nadink het, sê dan dankie vir al daardie dinge wat jy dikwels as so vanselfsprekend ag. Niks is ooit vanselfsprekend nie. Onthou dit.

Ons het nie net ’n paar boeke nie; ons het baie boeke.

Vir sommige is ’n rak vol boeke net ’n versameling voorwerpe wat moet mooi lyk; vir ander is dit ’n skatkis van herinneringe, drome en avonture.

Elke boek vertel ’n unieke verhaal.

Nie net van wat tussen die bladsye staan nie, maar van ’n oomblik toe ek dit in my hande vasgehou het.

Die dag toe ons dit gekoop of ontvang het. Die dik geskiedenisboek van universiteitsdae, ’n kookboek van ’n vriendin, ’n joernaal van my oupagrootjie se dae in die Anglo-Boereoorlog, boeke van briljante skrywers wat gekoester word, die memoires van ’n vriend. Boeke gee altyd meer. Dit bied wysheid, insig of troos. Dit maak nie saak hoe baie boeke ’n mens besit nie – daar is nog altyd ruimte vir een meer. Hoewel ons nou begin rem trap het. Ons word oud en boeke is swaar. Die uitdaging is om die chaos van boeke te organiseer en te onthou in watter boekrak hulle skuil. Sodra jy een soek, is hy soek. Boeke het ’n manier om in hoeke te pas waar ek nie gedink het hulle sou pas nie.

Die oorvol biblioteek is ’n leeftyd se lees. Die ander hart van die huis. Dit is ’n versameling van wie ons is, waarin ons belangstel, wat ons siele verkwik.

’n Mens kan nie genoeg boeke hê nie, net soos ’n troeteldier wat nie genoeg liefde kan kry nie.

Artful talent rewarded

Nine-year-old artist Lonwabo Jantjies hopes to soon be recognised again for his talent and perseverance as he awaits the results of several national art competitions he recently entered.

This Gr.3 learner already claimed victory in the primary school category of last year’s national ARTi Gallery Art Competition (Agac), where he was hailed as “a rising star in the world of art”. His prizes included blank canvases, a tablet, and prize money.

His award-winning piece, Starry Night Over South African Huts: Shining Amidst Adversity, was inspired by a painting of Vincent van Gogh. Entrants were asked to interpret Van Gogh’s work by creating an African-themed scene.

Judges praised Lonwabo’s entry as exceptional: “Despite his young age, Lonwabo’s artistic abilities exceed expectations, showing a level of maturity and technical skill far beyond his years. His unwavering passion for art, dedication, and love of challenge set him apart as a promising talent on the rise.”

In 2024, Lonwabo was placed in the top 12 among 3 900 entries in the Santam Child Art Project competition. His work was published in the Santam calendar. This year, the competition theme is “My happiest moment,” and he submitted a painting of his family.

He has also received accolades (platinum) in online contests such as the Curro Kathu Arts Festival and earned a Diamond Award at the St. Patrick’s CBC MaddFest for arts, drama and music.

He now awaits the outcome of a mental health competition based on

the theme “There is more to us.” His thought-provoking submission depicts the goddess of wisdom surrounded by words like “murder”.

“It reflects society’s ignorance of how serious crime affects people. Many choose to ignore what’s happening around them,” Lonwabo explains.

His parents, Phiwe Motse and Asanda Jantjies, are a source of encouragement. Art runs in the family. His father, Phiwe, is a qualified graphic artist.

“My dad is my artistic inspiration and my mom is my support system,” Lonwabo says.

“I started by drawing pictures my father gave me. Eventually, I wanted to challenge him, and that’s when my passion really grew. I mostly use coloured pencils and regular pencils.”

Four years ago, Phiwe enrolled his son at Nicoleen’s Art and Counselling Studio in Rhodesdene, Kimberley, where Lonwabo quickly stood out.

“He has excellent observation skills

and tremendous talent,” says his instructor, Smit.

“For young artists, mastering observation is vital, it is the key to drawing what is in your mind.”

Lonwabo attends art classes once a week for an hour and a half.

“At first, I was nervous, but by the second class, I felt more relaxed.”

Despite his progress, he finds some aspects of art still challenging.

“Portraits are tough – especially the eyes,” he says.

His creative process begins with sketching, followed by adding colour, texture, and depth.

“I feel proud and happy when I finish a piece. My dad critiques my work, sometimes I listen to him,” he says with a grin.

“I’m proud of my achievements. One day, I want to earn a living from my art and be recognised in the wider art world. I’d love for my work to be published in a book.”

Expo forges path forward

Mining and Technical Exhibitions (MTE) will host its popular high-impact mining and industrial expos, tailored to the iron ore and manganese operations’ needs, in the Northern Cape in the second week of July.

Die ATKV Karoo Toneelfees vind in Augustus in Victoria-Wes plaas.

Van 21 tot 23 Augustus sal 17 skole hul talent op die verhoog ten toon stel. Die Hoërskool Upington open die fees op Donderdagaand 21 Augustus met sy inskrywing.

Dié fees word deur die Apollo-teater se span gereël, met die ATKV as ’n borg.

Volgens Brandon Erasmus, voorsitter van die ATKV-tak en organiseerder van die fees, sal hierdie jaar se program ook kuns-, musiek-, dans-, toneel- en letterkundewerksessies insluit.

Dié tak is besonder trots op die eerbewys wat hulle tydens die ATKV Kultuurfees, wat in Mei plaasgevind

het, ontvang het. Die eerbewys is verwerf vir die Karoo-toneelfees van 2024, in die afdeling hoë gehalte met kuns. Vuurvonkies, die jeugtak van die Victoria-Wes- Gekombineerde Skool, het ook ’n eerbewys vir hul taalprogram vir Internasionale Moedertaaldag ontvang.

Van 6 tot 13 September is dit tyd vir die Vicoria-Wes-kunstefees in die Apollo-teater. Dit is verlede jaar die eerste keer aangebied. Kuns-, foto- en skryfkunskompetisies vind hiertydens plaas.

Nominations for the 25th National Teaching Awards (NTA) are now open.

This is a prestigious initiative that recognises and celebrates the dedication, innovation and excellence of South African educators.

The objectives of the awards are to raise the public image of the teaching profession; to recognise and promote excellence in teaching; to honour dedicated, creative and effective educators and schools; and to encourage best practices in education.

Award categories in excellence are: Gr.R teaching; primary school teaching; primary school leadership; secondary school teaching; secondary school leadership; special needs teaching; special needs leadership; teaching Mathe-

matics (GET); teaching Mathematics (FET); teaching Natural Sciences; teaching Physical Sciences; and technology-enhanced teaching and learning.

Goeie grondslag vir kinders, gesin

Charné Kemp het met ds. Keydy O’Callaghan, uitvoerende direkteur van Caritas Gemeenskapsfokus, gesels.

1. Wie is Caritas?

Caritas Gemeenskapsfokus streef na die heling van mense binne hul gemeenskappe. Dit word gedoen deur liefdevolle diens, geïnspireer deur die voorbeeld van Jesus Christus. Ons missie is om gemeenskappe te help herstel, gesinne te bemagtig, kinders en ouer persone te beskerm en gespesialiseerde terapie.

2. Hoe het dit ontstaan?

Caritas en sy kinderhuis begin by ’n kerkraadsvergadering van die NG kerk Kimberley op 5 Mei 1890. De Beers skenk ’n stuk grond, in die huidige Lawsonstraat, met ’n huisie as tehuis vir behoeftige kinders. Op 22 April 1891 is “Newton Tehuis – Newton Home” ingewy en vyf kindertjies ingeneem. Op 2 Augustus 1949 word die naam na die Kestell-kinderhuis verander, ter ere van dr. en mev. Kestell wat waardevolle dienste gelewer het. Verdere uitbreidings het plaasgevind en in 1961 is ’n kleuterafdeling ingewy, in 1964 ’n afdeling vir meisies en in 1970 ’n afdeling vir seuns.

Deur die jare is verbeterings aangebring. Dieselfde terrein word deur onder meer Caritas, Sinodale Kantoor van die NG kerk in Noord-Kaapland, arbeidsterapeute, en ’n sielkundige gebruik. 3. Wat doen Caritas?

Die Caritas Kinder- en jeugsorgsentrum in Barkly-Wes versorg sedert 1952 kinders. Daar is nou 85 kinders. Hulle kom uit ontwrigte gesinne en het in sommige gevalle geen ander heenkome het nie. Hier word holistiese residensiële sorg aangebied, drie gebalanseerde maaltye per dag, skoolklere, sakgeld, en veilige verblyf. Emosionele ondersteuning deur individuele en groepterapie word aangebied, en Caritas spesialiseer in ontwikkeling van lewensvaardighede. Kinders vyf tot tien jaar neem aan die Wysneusie-lewensvaardigheidsprogram deel, terwyl kinders 11 en 15 jaar die Ready for Life-program doen. Kinders van 16 jaar af word vir die volwasse wêreld met die Independent Living Plan voorberei.

Caritas Gemeenskapsfokus Vryburg het die afgelope jaar armoedeverligting aan 9 938 mense gebied en statutêre dienste en terapeutiese hulp aan 11 622 mense. Die kantoor het 119 langtermyn- en 217 korttermyn-gevalle hanteer, en 252 individuele gevalle is bedien. Altesaam 65 gesinne is gehelp met pleegsorg, en 12 nuwe kinders is in pleegsorg geplaas. Ons het ook 1 012 onderhoude gevoer, en 61 terapeutiese sessies gehou met kinders wat getraumatiseer is.

Caritas Gemeenskapsfokus Kimberley fokus vir die afgelope 80 jaar op kinderbeskerming en gesinshereniging. Ons het vanjaar reeds meer as 123 statutêre gevalle hanteer, wat insluit hofverrigtinge vir kinders wat mishandeling ervaar het. Ons span het meer as 65 gesinskonferensies gehou om gesinne te help om bymekaar te kom en saam te werk om hul kinders te beskerm. Ons het in samewerking met skole anti-boelieprogramme en voorkomingsveldtogte geloods. By die terapiesentrum is dienste gebied om die welstand van kinders en gesinne te verbeter. In die afgelope jaar is 42 kinders emosioneel geassesseer, 130 deur spelterapie ondersteun, en 28 volwasse terapie-sessies aangebied. Ons terapeute werk nou saam met gesinne om diepgaande genesing en herstel te bring. Ons vroeë kinderontwikkelings(VKO)-programme bedien 509 kinders in 12 sentrums. Die sentrums is versprei in afgeleë dorpe, en personeel reis ver om hulle te bereik. In afgeleë gebiede soos Strydenburg en Augrabies maak ons 'n groot verskil in kinders se opvoeding en voorbereiding vir skool. Ons het 33 praktisyns en 13 kokke wat daagliks kinders versorg. Caritas het samewerkingsooreenkomste met vyf tuistes

vir ouer persone in die NoordKaap en Noordwes.

Met die hospitaalbesoekdiens besoek twee vrywilligers weekliks pasiënte in verskeie hospitale – sowat 1 023 besoeke is die afgelope jaar gedoen.

Caritas het ’n nuwe eenheid vir opleiding en professionele ontwikkeling wat fokus op die verbetering van personeelvaardighede. Onlangs het 12 kinderversorgers opleiding ontvang om kinders te hanteer wat geseksualiseerde gedrag openbaar.

Caritas se eiendomme speel 'n sleutelrol in ons finansiële stabiliteit. Die Sinodale Sentrum wat konferensiegeriewe en oornagkamers insluit, verkry ook inkomste. Die bemarkingspan werk onvermoeid om die profiel van Caritas te verhoog.

4. Hoe word deursigtigheid en verantwoordbaarheid van fondse verseker?

Deur ’n effektiewe bestuursplan word alle wetgewing en beleid nagekom wat op ’n welsynsorganisasie van toepassing is. Geldsake word jaarliks geoudit en die jaar- en ouditverslag op ’n ope jaarvergadering bespreek.

5. Wat is van die uitdagings? Die toenemende morele verval van die samelewing wat tot al meer maatskaplike probleme lei. Met die druk op die ekonomie word geldinsameling en die verkryging van skenkings ’n groter uitdaging.

6. Deel ’n suksesverhaal. Op ’n stadium is ’n pasgebore baba in die Oppenheimer-tuin in Kimberley gevind - koud, nat en weggegooi. Wonderlike pleegouers is vir haar gevind en vandag is sy ’n gelukkige en gesonde kleuter binne ’n geborge gesin waar sy geliefd en veilig is.

7. Wat is die planne vir groei? Die VKO lê ons baie na aan die hart. ’n Holistiese bemagtiging van kinders op kognitiewe, fisieke, sosiale en emosionele vlak moet geskied voor hulle vyf jaar oud word. Navorsing wys dit is die beste manier om armoede te voorkom. Wanneer ’n kleuter se grondslag op hierdie vlakke gevestig is, is die kanse goed dat hul goed sal vaar in hul skoolloopbaan en sodoende vir hul ’n beter lewe kan bou.

As deel van hul gemeenskapsprojekte vir Mnr. en Mej. Diamantveld, het twee leerlinge aan die Hoërskool Diamantveld in Kimberley bejaardes op Moedersdag by die Minerva Gardens-aftreeoord trakteer. Sheri Smith en Nathan Baird het toegesien dat elkeen teenwoordig ’n geskenkpakkie ontvang.

Ook inwoners wat nie die geleentheid kon bywoon nie, het so ’n pakkie ontvang. Daarin was onder meer ’n koffiebeker, gevul met allerhande lekkernye.

Die twee leerlinge het ook praatjies gelewer en die vroue is met kitaarspel en sang vermaak, gelewer deur Sheri en Lourens Scheffer, ’n skoolvriend.

’n Verrassingsgeskenk is ook uitgedeel aan die een wat ’n plakker onder haar koffiebeker gevind het.

e Northern Cape Bowls (NCB) Mixed Pairs Championship was contested this past weekend at the Kimberley Town Bowling Club, with 16 top teams from across the province’s four sub-districts vying for the title and a coveted spot at the Bowls South Africa (BSA) Mixed Pairs, set to take place in Polokwane later this year.

After an intense round-robin format on Saturday, 14 June, four teams emerged as section winners to secure their places in the semi nals: CP Mathewson and Annelie Mathewson (Beacons eld Park Bowling Green Club), Driaan van Niekerk and Letticia Sterley (Beacons eld Park), Wihan and Orsiela Smit (Bloemhof), and Jurg and Louise Oosthuizen (Ammosal).

Driaan and Letticia, still riding high after their recent form in the Kimberley Sub-District Mixed Pairs, were clinical in their semi nal, dispatching the Oosthuizen team with relative ease to secure the rst spot in the nal.

e second semi nal proved to be a thrilling and emotional encounter. In a match lled with momentum shifts and brilliant play, the Mathewsons went head-to-head with the Smits in a tense mother-and-son showdown. With the score locked at 14-all after 20 ends, it was Wihan who played a brilliant shot to rest Annelie’s bowl out for the shot. CP narrowly missed reclaiming it, missing by just inches. With that, the defending champions were edged out,

and Wihan and Orsiela advanced to the nal.

e championship match did not disappoint. Wihan and Orsiela came out strong, building an early 8 – 2 lead. Driaan and Letticia slowly clawed their way back and at one point led 12 – 8. However, Wihan and Orsiela remained composed, delivering accurate and consistent bowls when it mattered most. In the end, they held on for a narrow 19 – 17 victory to be crowned Northern Cape Mixed Pairs Champions. In the third and fourth place playo , Jurg and Louise got the better of CP and Annelie, rounding o a competitive weekend of bowls.

Wihan and Orsiela will represent the NCB at the BSA Mixed Pairs later this year.

The Northern Cape Diamonds won their last match during power week two of this year’s Telkom Netball League (TNL) at Sun City from 13 to 17 June. On 17 June, the Diamonds won by 43 − 37 against the Eastern Cape Comets. Goal defence of the Diamonds, Asive Ntsendwana was named player of the match. In the other three matches, the Diamonds were defeated with 39 − 56 by the Kingdom Queens, with 36 − 56 by the Kingdom Stars, and with 41 − 66 by the Free State Sonoblomo. Power week three will take place from 14 to 20 July, with the Diamonds hoping to move up on the log of division two. Aiming to throw out the ball is Senestie Ponie during the match against the Comets.
