BULLETIN BULLETIN

NK verheug oor uitslae

Volgens botulismekenners, ene drs.

karkasverwydering is noodsaaklike maatreëls.

aangekla, en Nameka is as medebeskuldigde in Januarie bygevoeg.

Parties ask mayor to resign

Opposition parties in the Thembelihle Local Municipality in Hopetown are demanding the resignation of the town’s mayor after he was arrested for assault on a female victim (37).

The suspect is Marnus Visser of the Siyathemba Community Forum or SGB. The SGB rules the municipality in a coalition with the ANC.

Sgt Timothy Sam, police spokesperson, says the police in Philipstown are investigating a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH) following the alleged assault of a woman by her boyfriend in the town on 5 January.

“The police arrested the 36year-old suspect, who appeared in the Philipstown Magistrates’ Court on 8 January. He will launch an official bail application on 15 January,” Sam says.

L.W. Makenna, EFF councillor,

says the alleged act is condemned by their party.

“It is an abhorrent travesty that a figure of authority, who instead of serving as a beacon for fairness and justice, has mired himself in the mud of gender-based violence. This is beneath the dignity of the mayoral office and represent a gross betrayal of our community’s trust.”

Paul van Niekerk, FF Plus councillor, agrees by saying that the suspect should resign as mayor and councillor of his own accord. He also says the fact that the mayor was arrested in Philipstown, part of the Renosterberg Local Municipality, raises new questions about his position in Thembelihle.

“There has been concern for some time that he does not live in the municipality of which he is mayor.

NC entrepreneur honoured for change

Evelyn Maruping, creative entrepreneur and partnership specialist from the Northern Cape, was honoured with the prestigious Agent of Change Award by the province’s Department of Sports, Arts and Culture (DSAC).

This award recognises Maruping’s outstanding contributions to the creative industry and her unwavering commitment to driving positive change in communities across the province.

During the awards ceremony on 12 December, six women who have made significant strides in shaping their industries and uplifting their communities in the Northern Cape, were awarded.

Maruping’s award signified her role as a trailblazer in the fields of media, stakeholder engagement, and social development.

The accolade was presented by MEC Nontobeko Vilikazi, who praised the awardees for their resilience, leadership, and transformative impact.

“Evelyn embodies the spirit of innovation and dedication that we seek to cultivate in the Northern Cape,” said chief director, Bonakele Jacobs.

“Her journey and contributions continue to inspire and empower others, making her a true agent of change in our province and our Starlet.”

Maruping’s relationship with the DSAC began in 2011 when she was awarded a fully funded bursary to pursue her studies at The School for the Creative

Babies born on 1 January

The Department of Health said the country’s public health facilities have recorded 1 448 births on 1 January. This is a decline compared to 1 703 deliveries recorded last year this time.

Though the number of teen mothers has also decreased from 190 recorded last year to just over 80 this year, the department calls upon all sectors, including families, to address the scourge of teenage pregnancy. This can lead to poor school attendance, poor performance and ultimately school dropout.

The births per province are: Northern Cape 37; North West 89; Free State 85; Eastern Cape 219; Gauteng 387; Limpopo 191; KwaZulu-Natal 185; Mpumalanga 154; and Western Cape 101.

Economy.

Specialising in producing for motion picture medium, Maruping graduated with honors.

She is also dedicated to youth and women’s empowerment in the arts and business sectors in the Northern Cape. Maruping founded amongst other Northern Cape Starlet and Ping TVSA.

“I am deeply humbled to receive this award and grateful to the department for believing in my vision from the start,” said Maruping.

“This recognition fuels my passion to continue using storytelling and media as tools for empowerment and change.”

Her work spans across

media production, public relations, and community initiatives, including the successful execution of the Conversations for Change events and vodcast, and high-profile events for clients such as Standard Bank and the EBL Institute of Business and Technology. Her recognition solidifies her standing as a key player in the Northern Cape’s creative and social development sectors.

The Agent of Change Award honors Maruping’s personal achievements, but also highlights the department’s ongoing efforts to celebrate and invest in local talent, fostering growth and innovation within the province.

Welcoming new traffic inspectors

DEPARTEMENT GEREED VIR NUWE SKOOLJAAR

A total of 16 new traffic inspectors, to bolster road traffic law enforcement in the Northern Cape, were welcomed on 9 January by Bentley Vass, MEC for Coghsta and Transport, Safety and Liaison. This followed after the recruiting of 50 traffic trainees in 2024, who were enrolled at the Matjhabeng Traffic Training Academy in Welkom in the Free State to be trained, graduate and pass-out for the Certificate in Road Traffic Law Enforcement (NQF level 4). Vass said at the beginning of March, after an open recruitment process, an additional 25 provincial traffic inspectors will be appointed. Those trainees who could not pass all their unit standards in 2024, still have to conclude the programme.
The new inspectors were deployed to ten traffic stations in the province, and commenced their duties on 13 January. With the new inspectors and senior officials are Vass (third from the left, front) and Martha Bartlett (mayor: Sol Plaatje Municipality) next to him. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Beter toekoms in elkeen se hande

Wanneer my gesondheid beter is.

Hul gesprek is ernstig. Hul gesprek handel oor gebed.

Regtig. Net nie nou nie. Nou is moeilik. Dalk later.

Sy antwoord bring so ’n bietjie stilte.

In alles. En so lewe.

Living Griqua legend celebrates 105 years

A living legend in the Griqua community celebrated her 105th birthday in Campbell with amongst other her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Ma Griet Messelaar, as she is known, was born on 1 January 1920 in Griquatown as the daughter of Paul and Bettie Visser. She is the second eldest of six children, and is the only one still alive.

Her 105th birthday celebration took place on 4 January at the residence of one of her sons, Rev. Abi Messelaar, who is also the president of the National African Farmers Union (Nafu) in the Northern Cape.

Ma Griet was married in 1950 to the late Isak Babetjie Messelaar, who was a Griqua leader at Campbell. Nine children were born out of this wedlock.

When her husband passed away in 1971, Ma Griet raised all her children as a single parent. In 2020, Ma Griet lost two of her sons in less than five months due to Covid19. Aaron Martin William Messelaar of the Griqua Royal House and Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa, is her youngest son and the spokesperson of the Messelaar family

He says Ma Griet can still remember the different wars and how bad they were treated during apartheid. With the help of her knowledge the Messelaar family could claim the land they have lost during 1948. She also remembers the day in 1995 when former president Nelson Mandela arrived with a helicopter in Griquatown.

Ma Griet started with the making of Griqua arts and crafts as an income. This has become her passion to enrich her

community. She has been the driving force behind the training and skills development amongst women, especially Griqua artefacts such as the making of traditional matts.

Furthermore, she was a great inspiration and helped with the writing of the book Forgotten but not buried, the Griqua Culture and Superstitions by Aaron.

Ma Griet can still walk and do things for herself, and has no health problems such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

Part of her remedy for a long life is to respect and honor your parents.

She also controls her food consumption and drinks a lot of water every day.

Teenwoordig by Fouché se verjaarsdagvieringe was haar dogter by wie sy in

Kimberley in ’n woonstel bly, Isabel Venter, en haar man Gaven.

Commitment clear

St Patrick’s CBC in Kimberley showcased a 100% pass rate for 2024’s Gr. 12 examinations, with 86% of students qualifying for university admission. This is the 14th consecutive year the school has achieved a 100% pass rate.

Doka Matla, originally from Lesotho, is the top candidate.

He was the head prefect for 2024 as well as the Dux learner of the school – all this in spite of being two full years younger than the rest of his grade.

His seven distinctions were achieved in the face of adversity having lost his father in 2021 and his mother in 2024.

The caring and loving nature at St Patrick’s assisted him in overcoming these major emotional setbacks.

“We are incredibly proud of our students for their outstanding achievements,” said Craig Neave, executive head of St Patrick’s CBC.

“Their success is a testament to their commitment and the unwavering support of our dedicated teachers and staff.

“We look forward to seeing them excel in their future academic pursuits.”

The strong performance in university admissions highlights the effectiveness of the IEB curriculum and its focus on preparing students for higher education.

Reflecting on the matric results, the minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, says while good progress has been made in expanding education access, the attention must turn towards improving

the quality of the education that learners receive.

“Learners must leave our schools with an education and a qualification that allows them to pursue higher education opportunities or enter the job market in order to live lives of dignity,” she remarks.

She says recently released international benchmarking studies and the country’s own recently released Systemic Evaluation results, show that learners in Gr. 5 to Gr. 9 significantly underperform in relation to their global counterparts in Mathematics and Science.

It also shows that too many learners in South Africa cannot read for meaning in

any language by Gr. 4.

“This means that too many learners progress through the basic education system without mastering foundational skills, particularly in literacy and numeracy,” she says.

However, the Class of 2024 entered Gr. 8 in 2020 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, which was a huge disruption to teaching and learning globally. They also entered Gr. 9 – a key year for subject selection for senior grades – during the pandemic.

“The Class of 2024 reflects the resilience of the protea, South Africa’s national flower and a symbol of renewal and strength.”

Human trafficking exploitation in many forms

Reports have shown a worrying increase in children running away from home or disappearing, making it more important than ever to spread awareness on human trafficking.

January marks Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and Famsa is stepping up its efforts to protect children and educate the community on this critical issue. Human trafficking involves the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring, or receipt of individuals through force, fraud, or coercion, for the purpose of exploitation.

This exploitation can take many forms, including forced labour,

sexual exploitation, and domestic servitude.

How to report a missing person

) Act immediately. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to wait 24 hours before reporting a missing person. In South Africa, you can and should file a report as soon as you suspect someone is missing. Time is critical, especially in cases involving vulnerable individuals like children, the elderly, or those with medical conditions.

) Gather key information. Before contacting authorities, compile as

much information as possible about the missing person, including: – full name and nickname(s);

– age, gender, and physical description (height, weight, distinguishing marks);

– a recent photograph;

– a description of the clothing they were last seen wearing;

– the date, time, and location of their last known whereabouts;

– details about their usual routines, habits, or frequent locations; and – any known medical conditions or special needs.

) Report to the South African Police Service (SAPS). Visit your nearest police station and provide

FOCUS ON: SEGONYANA MALL, KURUMAN

all the gathered details. Insist on filing a missing person report. Obtain a case number for future reference. The police will initiate an investigation and notify other stations to assist in the search.

) Alert your community. Spread the word in your community and online: Share the person’s photo and details on social media platforms. Inform neighbourhood watch groups, schools, and local businesses.

) Follow up. Stay in regular contact with the police to ensure the case is being actively investigated. Keep them informed if you uncover any new leads or information.

) Additional tips. Avoid sharing sensitive personal details (such as home addresses) online to prevent exploitation. If you suspect foul play, inform the police immediately. Support services like counselling may be available for families during this stressful time.

Important contact information

) Contact the SAPS on: 10111, or alternatively visit your nearest police station.

) For more information or to report a missing person, contact Famsa at 053-723-1564.

Kuruman is set to welcome a transformative addition to its retail landscape, with the opening of the Segonyana Mall in November 2025.

This highly anticipated project by the Moolman Group, a leading property developer, will bring a safe and secure shopping experience to the heart of the bustling town.

The Segonyana Mall officially broke ground with a sod-turning ceremony on 2 December, marking the commencement of construction.

This milestone follows years of planning and multiple delays, signalling the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the community.

The ceremony was attended by, amongst others, the executive mayor, municipal manager, and key delegates from local authorities who have played an instrumental role in supporting the realisation of the mall.

Their unwavering commitment to the development has been crucial in bringing this vision to life, promising to be a major catalyst for local economic growth and job creation.

This mall will cater to the expanding needs of residents with an exciting mix of diverse retailers.

In addition to anchor tenants Shoprite and Boxer, shoppers can look forward to big-name brands like Sheet Street, Home Choice, Totalsports and Sportscene.

Spanning approximately 11 000 m2 of gross lettable area, the centre will feature a single-level parking facility for easy access.

Warriors back home with gold

The 16 students of Phoenix Warriors from Kathu who competed in the African Continental Championships of the World Association of Kickboxing Organisations (Wako), returned home with 18 gold, 17 silver and 4 bronze medals.

This championship was held in Benoni from 9 to 12 December. Shihan David Mac Vay says it was an experience for the students to fight on international level.

They experienced amongst other the African Continental Championships with 571 participants from 15 African countries. From Kathu, six were

crowned All African champions in their various age categories.

“Apart from Phoenix Warriors achievements, students got experience from international and multi world champion Bailey Murphy from America showcasing his skills and sharing knowledge, to former multi Wako world champion, Gös László Gömbi. Sport can change your life. I have seen how their passion, enthusiasm and life changed in these four days,” he comments, saying the academy is proud to be part of the growth in youth sport and kickboxing.
