Planne in lyn met visie

Dr. Zamani Saul, premier van die Noord-Kaap, het in sy provinsiale rede suksesse beklemtoon, asook planne in lyn met sy visie van ’n “moderne, groeiende en suksesvolle provinsie”. Tog het hy die bestaan van enkele knelpunte op die naam genoem.
Saul sê te veel Noord-Kaapse munisipaliteite stuur miljoene rande wat aan hulle vir bepaalde projekte toegewys is, onbestee terug aan die Tesourier – dit weens interne konflik oor wie die kontrakte moet kry.
Hy sê ook hoewel die Uitgebreide Openbare Werke-program (EPWP) werksgeleenthede vir duisende skep, is daar té veel van hulle “wat die hele week onder dieselfde boom slaap”, pleks van werk.
Die hoë voorkoms van tienerswangerskappe in die provinsie is ’n groot rede tot kommer. Wanneer ’n meisie jonger as 16 jaar swanger raak, moet die betrokke man van statutêre verkragting aangekla word, sê Saul. Veral dié punte wat die premier op Donderdag 6 Maart in sy provinsiale rede voor nagenoeg 1 800 gaste in die Mittah Sepereperekonvensiesentrum in Kimberley geopper het, het gaste regop laat sit. Deur die Noord-Kaap 60 000 Werkplan 2025-’29 wat ontwikkel word, wil die provinsiale regering in
die volgende vyf jaar nagenoeg 60 000 volhoubare poste skep. Die fokus is veral om geleenthede in die myn-, landbou-, hernubare energie-, vervaardiging-, toerisme- en die marine-sektor te ontsluit.
Saul het telkens na die Sol Plaatjeuniversiteit (SPU) se uitbreiding in die hoofstad verwys wat reeds ’n beduidende impak op die ekonomiese vooruitsigte en ontwikkelingstrajek het. Die SPU bly ’n strategiese vennoot om navorsing en vernuwing aan te wakker.
Gesondheid en onderwys bly van die grootste fokuspunte, asook die uitbreiding van vroeëre kinderontwikkeling wat “lewenslange voordele inhou.” Ongeag die huidige uitdagings in die onderwyssektor word geen onderwyser afgelê nie.
Vir die Cannabis-meesterplan is R12 miljoen vir die vestiging van ’n hennepkwekery toegewys.
Vir geruime tyd vind besprekings en beplanning vir die Boegoebaaihawe en verwante projekte plaas. Die ontwikkeling daarvan moet in die tyd van die Sewende Administrasie gebeur, sê Saul. Vordering word gemaak met die Namakwa Spesiale Ekonomiese-sone en die Kathu- en Upington-nywerheidspark, en gedetailleerde ontwerpe vir die grootmaatinfrastruktuur is onderweg.
Konstruksie sal in 2027-’28 begin.
Proklamasie van hawens by Port Nolloth, Hondeklipbaai en Kleinzee
sal die provinsie se vissery en akwakultuur-moontlikhede ontsluit.
Besprekings is met die Lughawensmaatskappy van SuidAfrika (Acsa) aan die gang om die potensiaal van die Upingtoninternasionale lughawe uit te brei, wat lugverbinding en handelslogistiek sal verbeter.
Ná ’n memorandum van verstandinghouding met Raisins SA word beoog om die uitvoer van rosyne met 55% te verhoog.
Die volgende paar jaar sal gekenmerk word deur groot infrastruktuurbeleggings deur Eskom, en die drie Kaapse streke sal tot 37 GW van die 38 GW nasionale hernubare-energie doelwit bydra.
Die vestiging van die SuidAfrikaanse Nasionale Padagentskap (Sanral) se provinsiale kantoor in Kimberley vanaf 1 April bevestig die fokus op beter paaie, met R7,2 biljoen se padinfrastruktuurprojekte oor die volgende drie jaar.
Inkontraktering van sekuriteitsbeamptes het plaasgevind, met die voorneme om in die volgende drie jaar nog 2 000 te werf.
In die stryd teen geweld teen vroue en kinders het die Nasionale Vervolgingsgesag vyf vervolgingspunte geskep: in Galeshewe, Kuruman, De Aar, Upington en Kimberley, en 27 nuwe maatskaplike werkers word in April aangestel.

Borgtog derde keer geweier

John-Ross Henderson (38) wat onderskeidelik van moord en poging tot moord op Jayson Afrique en sy vrou, Michayla, aangekla word, het op 5 Maart ’n derde terugslag gekry nadat die hooggeregshof in Kimberley sy appèlaansoek teen die weiering van sy borgtog afgewys het.
Waarnemende regter T. Tyuthuza is nie oortuig dat Henderson niks sal doen om
die ondersoek in te
meng en selfs streng borgtogvoorwaardes oortree nie. Henderson word verdink dat hy vir Afrique doodgeskiet het, en Jayson se vrou in hul bakkie voor hul woonkompleks in Julie 2024 in Kimberley wou doodskiet.
In haar uitspraak het die regter bevind dat die twee landdroste wat Henderson se eerste borgtogaansoek in September en borgtogaansoek op nuwe feite in Desember afgewys het, nie in hul uitsprake fouteer het nie.

op die misdaadtoneel die selfoon opgetel het. Die regter het bevind dis hoorsêgetuienis wat nie gestaaf is nie. Henderson jr. is bekend met die polisie en prosedures. Dié binnekennis en voorneme “om alles uit te vind” stem die regter onrustig. Henderson, ’n voormalige polisielid, is voorheen aangekla van gewapende roof maar die betrokke verhoor is nog nie afgehandel nie. Hy het misluk om dwingende en wesenlike uitsonderlike persoonlike omstandighede te bewys wat sy borgtog regverdig, is bevind.

Partye sê hul sê oor provinsiale rede
Werkverskaffing in die provinsie moet met dringendheid aangepak word, sê Harold McGluwa, DALP en provinsiale leier in die Noord-Kaap, in reaksie op die onlangse provinsiale rede.
McGluwa sê die premier, dr. Zamani Saul, het nog net meer as vier jaar oor om die NoordKaap van ’n arm, gebroke provinsie na ’n vooruitstrewende en dinamiese een te verander.
Baie meer moet gedoen word om die departement van gesondheid te stabiliseer, met die aanstelling van ’n geskikte departementshoof ’n goeie begin, asook beslissende optrede teen korrupte amptenare wat armes en kwesbares van gesondheidsorg beroof.
Theo Joubert, VF Plus-LPW, sê dit wil voorkom of die premier probleme op plaaslike vlak wil aanspreek, wat positief is
aangesien talle plaaslike regerings wanfunksioneel is.
Dr. Wynand Boshoff, VF Plus LP en provinsiale leier, sê die premier het nie veel nuwe planne uitgestip nie, wat ongeloofwaardig sou wees met vorige planne wat nog onafgehandel is.
Op sy Facebook-blad skryf die EFF dat die provinsiale rede niks anders was as bladsye vol eie lof nie. Die premier ignoreer boonop die korrupsie en wanbestuur wat tot Kimberley se waterkrisis gelei het, sê dié party.
Dié eerste provinsiale rede van die Sewende Administrasie nagenoeg R2,5 miljoen gekos, sê die Speaker van die NoordKaapse Provinsiale Wetgewer, Newrene Klaaste.
Op 11 Maart vind die debat plaas, met die premier se reaksie op 12 Maart.

Afrikaans is inklusief en vriendelik, mededeelsaam en almal se taal wat hom praat.
Die Afrikaans 100-fees skop op 8 Mei in Kaapstad af, maar die fees maak ook ’n draai in die Paarl, Genadendal en Pretoria.
Uit die mond, ’n musikale viering van die Afrikaanse taal, moet nie misgeloop word nie Met Amanda Strydom, Coenie de Villiers, Emo Adams, Frazer Barry, Lynelle Kenned en Nicole Holm beloof hierdie om ’n uitsonderlike viering van Afrikaanse musiek te wees Die konserte is op 10 en 11 Mei in Durbanville en op 28 en 29 Mei in Pretoria.

‘Ewigdurende leemte’

Die drie beskuldigdes wat op Vrydag 7 Maart in die hooggeregshof in Kimberley skuldig bevind is op die moorde in 2020 op Dan en Breggie Brand, en hul dogter, Elzabie Brand, is elk tot meer as 40 jaar gevangenisstraf gevonnis.
Elk is 25 jaar tronkstraf vir die drie moorde opgelê en vyf jaar elk vir drie aanklagte van regsverydeling, vonnisse wat samelopend uitgedien sal word, en 15 jaar vir roof met verswarende omstandighede.
Donald Seoleseng (toe 21) en Tshepo Visagie (toe 36), albei van Majaneng; en Tsepaone Melato (toe 20) van Pudimoe, is Vrydag in die hooggeregshof in Kimberley skuldig bevind aan moord, roof met verswarende omstandighede en regsverydeling. Seoleseng is ook twee jaar tronkstraf vir ontsnapping opgelê.
Die vierde aangeklaagde, Kgomotso Mpulwana (toe 43) van Rooiwal, is onskuldig op al die aanklagte teen haar bevind. Realeboga Manyedi, ’n halfbroer van Visagie, het ’n staatsgetuie geword.
Die Brand-slagoffers het op dié dag omstreeks 12:00 telefonies met familielede vanaf hul hoewe by Hartswater gesels. Hulle is om 13:00 ontvoer en vasgebind, en teen 15:00 was hul lyke in
die veld gegooi. Hul motors, selfone, skootrekenaars en handsakke is gebuit. In haar uitspraak het die regter bevind die drie slagoffers is op ’n Sondag tydens middagete, terwyl dit stil en rustig was, in hul huis met skerp en stomp voorwerpe aangerand. Daar was bloedsleepmerke binne en buite die huis, en Dan se bril en hoed het op die erf gelê toe ’n buurman ’n dag later ondersoek ingestel het nadat die Brands se twee dogters, Heidi Taljaard en Trudie de Beer, onderskeidelik van Kaapstad en Potchefstroom, hulle nie per telefoon kon bereik nie. Van die verdagtes is die Maandagaand in Elzabie se Mazda op pad na Taung deur die polisie aangekeer. Mpulwana was agter die stuurwiel en in besit van Elzabie se selfoon. Teen dié
tyd is die Gautengsenommerplaat reeds met ’n Noord-Kaapse-nommerplaat vervang, wat volgens die regter op fyn beplanning van die misdaad dui. Seoleseng het uit die polisievangwa ontsnap maar is by Mpulwana se huis, steeds geboei en met polisiehondbytmerke, aangekeer. Die polisie het nog ’n selfoon, skootrekenaar en handsak wat aan die Brands behoort het, in Mpulwana se huis gevind. ’n Polisielid het getuig dat Visagie kort ná sy inhegtenisneming die vinger na Mpulwana as die opperbrein gewys het.
De Beer en Taljaard het ter strafverswaring getuig hoe die hartelose, genadelose en wrede moorde hul lewe verpletter het. Die onvergeeflike moorde op hul geliefdes het ’n ewigdurende leemte in hul en hul kinders se lewe gelaat.
Seoleseng en Melato het deur hul regsverteenwoordigers ter strafversagting verskoning vir hul optrede gevra. Die regter het bevind hulle het met ’n gemeenskaplike doel opgetree, en dat die beplande rooftog na die moorde gelei het om teenstand te verhoed. Die jonger moordenaars is moontlik deur Visagie beïnvloed en is ’n lewenslange vonnis nie “gepas“ nie. Dit was hul eerste oortreding, hoewel “afskuwelik en in die ergste graad”.

Skep oase in woestynlandskap
Milde reën het die afgelope weke wydverspreid voorgekom, en selfs in Namibië is woestynlandskappe deur die reën omskep in tonele wat aan ’n oase herinner. Isetta du Toit skryf op Sondag 9 Maart op Facebook oor dié toneel by Wêreldend: “Stilte na die storm... Nog nooit het water tot by die bome geloop nie... baie, baie dankbaar.” Wêreldend is suid van Sesriem, naby Palmwag en die Botswana-grens. Op die Facebook-blad Reënval in SA is verskeie plasings van reënval oor die hele NoordKaap heen gedeel. Op Sondag het 44 mm by Vanwyksvlei uitgesak, laat weet Janet Swanepoel. Ongeveer 4 mm het in dele van Upington en Carnarvon geval, met 16 mm by Neilersdrift by Keimoes. Op Saterdag het 100 mm reën in ongeveer twee ure oor die Koedoeskloof by Griekwastad uitgesak, laat weet Andrea Maritz. Ook Williston en dele van die Boesmanland het reën gehad. ”Plekke en paaie is verspoel, maar ons harte loop oor,” skryf Yolandi van der Merwe ná tot 50 mm reën by Kenhardt voorgekom het. Geleentheid werp lig op nuwe insig
Satyn, kant, goud en silwer in klere, skoene, handsakke, en in haartooisels. Pakke, strikdasse, skeppings, kettingwinkelklere, denims, T-hemde. Só het oud en jonk, as lede van die gemeenskap uit die Noord-Kaap se vyf distrikte, en as verteenwoordigers van staatsinstellings, politieke en kulture groeperings, sakesektor en selfs die LGBTQ+-gemeenskap vir vanjaar se provinsiale rede by die Mittah Seperepere-konvensiesentrum in Kimberley opgedaag. Hulle het in privaatvoertuie, busse, taxi’s, en te voet opgedaag. Die orkes en seremoniële drilpeloton van die polisie, asook perde en ruiters van die berede-eenheid het tot prag en praal bygedra.
Die besef het ingesink dat dít die mense van die Noord-Kaap is, hoe uiteenlopend ook al: sout van die aarde tot klatergoud. Dit was onmoontlik om nié die opgewondenheid van dié raak te sien wat vir die eerste maal so ’n geleentheid bygewoon het nie. Vir hulle was dit ’n belewenis; het dit prestige verskaf dat die
planne vir die provinsie in hul teenwoordigheid uitgelig is. Op pad terug, terwyl jy doelbewus die verwaarlosing aan die luukse sentrum miskyk, oor die ongebruikte tremspoor met sy talryke toerismemoontlikhede, weer ’n keer oor die kruising by Stockdale- en Compoundstraat waar die verkeersligte vir hoe lank reeds buite werking is, mikmik verby slaggate, verby haweloses onder platgedrukte kartonbokse langs swartgebrande mure in openbare ruimtes, verby Rhodes se standbeeld waar nog haweloses agter die veiligheidsomheining en in die skadu van die standbeeld skuiling gevind het, verby rommelbestrooide ruimtes en stukkende sypaadjies, wonder jy wat die definisie van “modern, groeiend en suksesvol” is: Die visie vir die provinsie. Jy onthou ’n deel uit die premier se toespraak, dat dit steeds vir die provinsiale regering ’n saak van voorkeur is om toe te sien dat die hoofstad in ’n aantreklike fokuspunt verander. Jy kyk, en jy kyk, en jy sien dit nie.
Sien die mooi tussen die lelik raak

Die afgelope paar weke was die politiek in ons mooi land sommer baie deurmekaar.
Nie net hier nie, sommer oor die wêreld heen.
Die antwoorde op die vrae is nie maklik nie en die oplossings is ook nie eenvoudig nie.
’n Mens kan verstaan dat mense verskillend reageer en hul spanningspunte verskillend is en
die versadigingsvlakke in die hantering van dinge verskil.
Dit is tog vanselfsprekend.
’n Mens sien maklik hoe mense mekaar se koppe afbyt, onnodig skerp reageer en soms besonder moeite doen om mekaar te diskrediteer in ander en in die wêreld se oë. Alles so onnodig.
Vanmiddag toe ek die lang pad aandurf huis toe en al hierdie dinge oordink, besef ek net weer ons moenie dat die mooi van die

Sy hou haar hand na hom toe uit: “As ek in die toekoms na ’n ‘sulke ding’ verwys, is dit ’n tweepuntprop.”
As kleuter het ek verwarring by die plaaslike kafee veroorsaak wanneer ek vir ’n “vendusiebrood” gevra het. Dit was ’n reuse varsgebakte brood wat so in ons huishouding bekend gestaan het.
’n Vriendin vertel onlangs vir my hoeveel verwarring daar veroorsaak is deurdat hulle in hul huishouding van Bovril as “bôggerol” gepraat het.
Telkemale het iemand vir haar seun gevra wat hy op sy broodjie wil hê. Wanneer hy gesê het hy soek asseblief “bôggerol” is daar verstaan dat hy net ’n snytjie brood met absoluut niks daarop wil hê.
’n Klomp jare gelede het ek ’n heerlike ontbytresep uitgedruk. Nadat ek dit gemaak het en die resep in my reseptelêer wou bêre, het ek besef dat die naam van die resep nie gedruk het nie.
Ek het ’n pen uit die deurmekaar laai gehaal en aan die bokant van die resep geskryf: “Weet-nie-wat-nie.”
Ons praat steeds van die Weetnie-wat-nie-ontbyt en hoe lekker dit is.
Mense gee soms ander name vir items as wat dit in die volksmond bekend staan. Soms is dit omdat die kinders dit so genoem het toe hulle baie klein was en die naam het behoue gebly.
Ander kere word dit aan ’n spesifieke persoon of gebeurtenis gekoppel.
Watter items in jou lewe het unieke name wat verwarring by vreemdelinge veroorsaak?

’n Goeie losskakel het die vermoë om wyd te kyk en baie dinge gelyktydig raak te sien. Hy sien hoe die skrumskakel die bal na sy kant gooi, terwyl die ander span se flanke op hom afstorm. Terselfdertyd sien hy die senter langs hom en die verdedigers wat op die senter afstorm. Hy sien of die ander span se heelagter in posisie is en besluit: Gaan ek skop, hardloop of die bal aangee? Waarheen skop hy? Hoe breek hy? Dit alles in ’n breukdeel van ’n sekonde. Dit is ’n geniale losskakel: Hy het die vermoë om wyd te kyk en die situasie in ’n oomblik op
te som. Nog meer merkwaardig is dat uitsonderlike losskakels oor die vermoë beskik om visie op volle vaart te behou. Die wedstryd van die lewe word soms vinnig gespeel. Soms is die speelveld chaoties soos wat ons sommer vroeg in 2025 beleef. Daar is baie gebeure in die plaaslike en internasionale politieke landskap wat ons onrustig en onseker stem. Ons almal beleef iets van die geharwar van die lewe. Sal ons perspektief behou? Dit regkry om die kaf van die koring te skei? As dit werklik vinnig gaan, beskik ons oor die vermoë om steeds met ‘n wyehoeklens te kyk?
Dit is nie altyd vanselfsprekend of maklik nie. Ons kan so gou ons perspektief op God verloor. Miskien is dit tyd om doelbewus vir jouself te sê: Stadiger, sodat ons nie by God verby leef nie.

DBV dankbaar oor groot skenking
Die diere by die Kimberley Dierebeskermingsvereniging (DBV) word op kosbakke vol liefde trakteer nadat meer as 36 ondernemings en ander gemeenskapslede in Februarie saamgestaan het om honde- en katkos en ander benodigdhede aan die RealNet Properties Kimberley se ‘Bowlful of Love’-veldtog deel te neem.
Die skenkings het die druk op die DBV en sy personeel van 17 mense verlig wat daagliks uitgawes van sowat R8 000 tot R9 000 het om honde, katte, hase, hoenders en ander diere te versorg, personeel te betaal, en uniforms, persoonlike beskermingstoerusting, en skoonmaakmiddels te koop, asook uitgawes aan boekhouers en arbeidskonsultante.
Alet Steyn, voorsitter van die DBV se bestuurskomitee wat uit ses vrywillige lede bestaan, sê die nood word al groter met meer diere wat versorging benodig. Die komitee bestuur die DBV ingevolge ’n grondwet wat streng toegepas word.
“Ons gebruik maandeliks sowat een ton katsand. Daagliks word 20 kg katkos en 180 kg hondekos by die DBV opgevreet. In Februarie het 605 diere versorging nodig gehad.
“Hiervan was 267 diere wat die eienaars nie meer wou of kon aanhou nie, 230 was verlore of rondloperdiere, en 64 diere is vir mediese behandeling of sterilisasie gestuur. Die res was loseerders of diere wat die eienaars wou uitsit weens ouderdom of siekte.”
Die DBV moet sy eie inkomste genereer.
“Mense kan hokke borg, lede word, skenkings maak en geld in hul testament spesifiek aan die Kimberley DBV nalaat. Ons het ’n welsynwinkel wat net
Saterdae oop is weens ’n gebrek aan betroubare vrywilligers, en van die voorraad in die winkels word op veilings verkoop.
“Ons woon markdae in die stad by om ons winkel se ware te verkoop. Mense kan ook betaal om met hul honde in ons hondepark te speel.”
Steyn haal haar hoed vir die personeel af, wat nie groot salarisse betaal word
nie, maar daagliks getrou werk.
“Die personeellede wat die telefone beantwoord word soms verskree deur mense wat nie ons mandaat verstaan nie.
“Ons kan nie net probleemhonde goedsmoeds van eienaars verwyder sonder dat die polisie ook betrokke is nie.
“Die polisie verstaan ook nie altyd wat hul verpligting is nie ten opsigte van die Aangepaste Wet op Dieresake wat hulle, eerder as ons, verplig om op te tree nie. Onder die Wet op Dierebeskerming moet ons na dierewelstand kyk.
“Ons kan byvoorbeeld inwoners opvoed om nie honde aan kettings vas te maak as die erf ’n veilige heining het nie. Ons kan waarskuwings uitreik en gereeld inspeksies doen voordat ’n lasbrief uitgereik kan word om ’n verwaarloosde dier te verwyder.
“Ons kan nie probleemdiere sonder die samewerking van die polisie konfiskeer omdat die buurman dink hy is gevaarlik nie.”
Sy sê mense wat wilde katte agter geboue voer moet ook verantwoordelikheid neem deur ’n hok by die DBV te huur om die katte te vang sodat dit gesteriliseer kan word om aanteel te beheer.

’n Ma en dogter, wat albei lid van die VLV Kuruman-tak is, se prestasies tydens die VLV Sirkel Kalahari se 92ste konferensie op 5 en 6 Maart by die Klondike Lodge buite Vryburg, is bewys dat hulle nooit ledig is nie. Zelda Lombaard het handborduurwerk op seilskoene gedoen en die eerste plek verower in die beginner-afdeling met 85%. Sy wen boonop die beginner breiwerk-afdeling, ook met 85%, en het ’n tweede plek in fotografie, met 88%, behaal. FOTO’S: VERSKAF
Zoë Lombaard (19) het die hekelwerk-afdeling vir beginners met 85% gewen. Sy het ’n oopknooptrui uit “oumablokkies” gehekel, en het ook 75% behaal vir ’n marmerkoek wat sy in die gebak-afdeling ingeskryf het. Sy was op tienjarige ouderdom een van die stigterslede van die Voetspore-afdeling van die VLV, en vandag is sy ’n volwaardige lid.

Padteken waarsku opnuut

Nóg ’n waarskuwingsteken is onlangs in Upington opgerig om vragmotorbestuurders te waarsku om nié onderdeur die treinbrug in Schröderstraat, waarlangs die N14 deur die dorp strek, te probeer ry nie, maar eerder ’n alternatiewe roete te neem.
Die treinbrug is net 3,3 m hoog en die meeste vragmotors kan nie onderdeur dié brug ry nie sonder om daaraan vas te haak met gevolglike skade vir die vragmotor en die brug. Weens dié botsings het krake in die beton van die brug begin vorm, en van die swaar metaalbalke wat die treinbrug stewig moet hou, is reeds beskadig. Soms slaan die vragmotors om, en word een van die belangrikste roetes deur die dorp versper.
Werner Strauss, AfriForumdistrikskoördineerder vir die NoordKaap, sê die teervlak van die duikweg onderdeur die brug kan nie gesak word nie omdat ’n hoofrioolpypleiding onderdeur dit strek. Die brug kan ook nie hoër gemaak word nie, omdat daar steeds daagliks treine is wat van die spoor gebruik maak.
Die N14-roete onderdeur die brug is oënskynlik die kortste roete deur Upington, en word deur talle GPSprogramme as sulks aangedui. Om die brug te probeer beskerm teen verdere skade, het AfriForum se plaaslike tak ’n padteken laat restoureer wat deur die son gebleik was. Dié bord is op die ingangsroete vanaf Olifantshoek, sowat 500 m voor die treinbrug opgerig om

Die AfriForum-tak het reeds in 2022 ’n 9 m-lange bord laat maak, wat duisende rande gekos het, wat vragmotorbestuurders duidelik waarsku om nie onderdeur die brug te ry nie. Dié bord het grootliks die probleem opgelos, maar tog is daar
vragmotorbestuurders wat nie hierop ag slaan nie.
“Dit is van kardinale belang dat hierdie brug nie ineenstort nie, daarom doen AfriForum ’n beroep op die Dawid Kruiper-munisipaliteit om dringend te help om die treinbrug te beveilig,” sê Strauss.
“Die treinbrug het reeds groot skade opgedoen, daarom sal dringend iets gedoen moet word om lewensverliese te voorkom.”

Schools given financial assistance
A disbursement of R100 million was done to schools as part of the norms and standard allocation. This was announced by the Northern Cape Department of Education on Friday, 7 March. These funds have been allocated for essential needs, including learning and teaching support materials, municipal services, special schools, hostel subsidies, Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres, and learner transport, as stated by Geoffrey van der Merwe, media spokesperson. A total of R22 million has
been paid directly to municipalities across the province to assist schools struggling to cover their municipal service costs. This intervention was crucial in preventing electricity disconnections at schools.
Although there remains a shortfall in the funding provided, affected schools are able to operate without disruptions. The department is in ongoing communication with the Provincial Treasury to ensure the timely disbursement of funds to schools in the new financial year, said Van der Merwe.

Programme supports practitioners
Early Childhood Development (ECD) practitioners play a vital role amongst young children in fostering essential learning, social, and emotional skills that lay the foundation for long-term success.
With this in mind, six ECD practitioners from within the Frances Baard District of the Northern Cape were upskilled through an 18-month ECD practioner capacity building initiative, which recently culminated in a graduation ceremony.
Forming part of the programme’s first cohort, the practitioners have earned a National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level 4 qualification, having successfully completed their Further Education and Training (FET) certificate in ECD, enhancing its quality within the Dikgatlong Local Municipality.
“This initiative ensures that children receive quality early education, laying a strong foundation for their future learning.
“We are proud to witness the tangible impact of our support, as these practitioners contribute to improved teaching, learning, and the functionality of ECD centres,” said Lesego Mosiane, community liaison officer for Matla A Bokone Solar, which funds this programme.
In addition, Matla A Bokone Solar plans to
further develop these practitioners by funding their NQF Level 5 higher certificate in ECD. This qualification, aligned with the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (Caps), will enable them to teach Gr. R learners and apply for Department of Basic Education positions, further strengthening the professionalisation of the sector.
“I am very grateful for what Matla A Bokone Solar is doing for us as ECD
practitioners. Today, I am a qualified ECD practitioner and was awarded as top student. I look forward to furthering my studies with their support,” says Heinrich Bartlett, a newly qualified practitioner of the Little Flower Playgroup ECD Centre in Barkly West. In total, 25 practitioners are supported through the programme, including six from Barkly West, seven from Kimberley, and 12 from Riverton.

Die opleidingsprogram van drie maande, in vennootskap met die Artisan Training Institute (ATI), bied vaardighede soos stroombaanontwerp, kragverspreiding en veiligheidsprotokolle, sweistegnieke, metaalvervaardiging, gehaltebeheer en veiligheidspraktyke in ooreenstemming met nywerheidstandaarde. Learning enhanced
As part of its ongoing support to learners and to bolster education in the Northern Cape, Kumba Iron Ore, through its Back to School campaign, has delivered over 1 000 school readiness packs at eight primary schools in the Tsantsabane Municipality. These packs include new schoolbags, crayons and other essentials, and were handed over to Gr. 1 learners at the schools. Enabling an environment conducive for learning is key for education development to take root, says commmunity liaison specialist and project lead at Kumba, Matilo Keaobaka. As one of the beneficiaries, the principal at the Assmang Primary School, Gurshen Oliphant, expresses his appreciation.
“Whenever we think of Kumba’s contribution to our school, a deep sense of gratitude fills our hearts.
“We are reminded of the profound impact this initiative will have on our learners,” Oliphant says.
In another project, Kumba partnered with Transnet on their Shoes on Feet campaign that supports vulnerable learners across the country by providing them with new pairs of school shoes. Led by the Transnet Foundation, the campaign has collected over 5 000 pairs of shoes since October.
Kumba has contributed over 1 000 pairs of shoes to be distributed in various schools within its host communities in the John Taolo Gaetsewe and the Tsantsabane Municipality.

Youth developing skills through programme
To address the shortage of qualified artisans and employment, Anglo American Zimele, in partnership with the Artisan Training Institute (ATI), recently launched an artisanal skills development programme aimed at youth from host communities in the Northern Cape.
The three to four year programme began in November and will train 75 young people from the communities around Kumba Iron Ore’s Sishen and Kolomela mines.
It combines institutional and workplace learning at ATI’s fully accredited Kimberley campus, where candidates are trained in nine essential trades –including auto electrical, heavy equipment mechanics, and instrumentation.
Successful graduates will receive internationally recognised Red Seal Certificates from the Department of Higher Education and Training. All the accredited engineering trades will meet a minimum
of NQF level 4 status, positioning them for careers in various industries.
“We believe in the transformative power of partnerships to truly drive meaningful and sustainable change in people’s lives,” says Larisha Naidoo, head of Anglo American Zimele.
“Beyond technical training, we are providing full accommodation, meals and transport support to ensure our learners can focus entirely on their development.”

Responding to the needs of the community for safe social spaces, Kumba Iron Ore alongside community representatives, opened two newly renovated parks in Postmasburg in the Tsantsabane Local Municipality. Die Punt Park and Postdene Park were refurbished by local SMME’s, installing fencing, walk ways, benches and ablution facilities, as well as high-mast solar lighting – and planting trees.
At the opening ceremony, Adriaana Slambert, Kumba Iron Ore’s corporate affairs manager, urged the community to take care of the parks and to refrain from vandalising the facilities.
Receiving the parks as assets, Helena English, mayor, requests community members to steer away from using the parks for selfish reasons, as it belongs to the community and must accommodate all.
The parks will be maintained by local civil society groups through for hire equipment.

Kidney disease: Silent, serious threat

Noord-Kaapse rugbyspanne was die afgelope naweek kruis en dwars in verskillende plekke van die land in verskeie wedstryde in aksie.
Met ’n eindtelling van 66 – 7 het die Griekwas die Luiperds in Potchefstroom ore aangesit tydens die Poubloues se eerste wedstryd in die SA Beker-reeks vir vanjaar.
Die Kwaste was verlede jaar die wenner van dié reeks wat toe vir die eerste keer aangebied is.
Die Griekwas se eerste tuiswedstryd in dié reeks vir vanjaar is Saterdag 15 Maart om 14:00 by die Suzuki-stadion in Kimberley wanneer hulle gaan poog om die Valke se vlerke te knip.
In ronde vier van die FNB Varsity Shield het die span van die Sol Plaatje-universiteit (SPU) naelskraap in die stof gebyt met 20 – 21 teen die span van die Walter Sisuluuniversiteit (WSU) op die Sisa Dukashe-stadion in Mdantsane naby Oos-Londen.
Dié Gemmies, wat vanjaar vir die eerste keer tot die FNB Varsity Shield toegetree het, moes op Vrydag 7 Maart weereens in nat, reënerige toestande hul teenstanders aanvat.
