Botaniese tuin vir stad

Kimberley gaan in die afsienbare toekoms met ’n botaniese tuin spog. Dié botaniese tuin wat op die terrein van die Oppenheimer-tuine gevestig gaan word, sal na verwagting deur die Suid-Afrikaanse Biodiversiteitsinstituut (SANBI) geakkrediteer word.

Volgens beplanning sal dié tuin vir uitstallings, boekklub-byeenkomste, vertonings in ’n opelugteater, asook musiekuitvoerings, oop wees.

Dit sal met die Sol Plaatje-uni-

versiteit (SPU) se visie en riglyne strook. Kashini Maistry, direkteur van institusionele bevordering, sê dat die botaniese tuin ook as ’n opeluglaboratorium vir akademici en studente van die fakulteit natuur- en toegepaste wetenskap sal dien. Die Oppenheimer-tuine is aangrensend aan die William Humphreys-kunsgalery en die Noord-Kaap Teater. Dit was eens ’n fokuspunt vir pieknieks, met fotosessies in die roostuin. Die twee bekendste bakens in die tuin is die Diggers’ Memorial Fountain en die borsbeeld van Sir Ernest Oppenheimer. Albei is met tyd gevandaliseer en die tuin het veral.

In April 2021 het samesprekings tussen die SPU en die Sol Plaatje-munisipaliteit begin aangaande die koop van die tuin deur die universiteit. Uitgerekte samesprekings het gevolg en beswaar is deur lede van die publiek aangeteken. In September 2023 is die verkoop hiervan aan die SPU afgehandel. In November 2023 het De Beers die 14-verdieping Harry Oppenheimer-gebou aan die SPU geskenk. Dié gebou is ook aanliggend aan dié tuine. In Februarie 2024 het die SPU eienaarskap van die tuine verkry. Sedertdien het die SPU begin om ’n groot saal op ’n punt van die terrein te

bou, en die hele tuin is omhein.

“Terwyl die SPU moderne infrastruktuur en werksgeleenthede bied en die ekonomie versterk, word moeite gedoen om met die omliggende gemeenskappe te skakel en inklusiwiteit te bevorder, wat die gang van sosiale interaksies in die stad verander het,” sê Maistry.

Die projek wat die meeste emosie wek, is juis dié een om die tuine te laat herleef. Dit is deur Harry Oppenheimer gevestig om die lewe van sy pa, Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, te herdenk. Hy was die stigter van Anglo American en ’n voormalige burgemeester van die stad. Die tuine is in

Desember 1961 geopen en het ’n deel van die terrein van die ou Maleise kamp in beslag geneem. Die kamp was deel van stedelike ruimtes wat uit die vroeë mynboudae van Kimberley ontwikkel het. Toe De Beers, eenmalige eienaars van die grond, die kamp in 1939 aan die stad geskenk het, is "krotbuurtopruiming" gedoen. ’n Groot hoeveelheid werk moet nog plaasvind voordat die tuine met ’n nuwe voorkoms gaan spog. Maistry sê dit sal tydelik gesluit wees. Infrastruktuurverbeterings vind plaas, onder meer die koppeling van veiligheidkameras, WiFi, beligting, besproeiing en pomphuise vir die tuin.

the ﬁrst time, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) set up a stall on the premises. This market takes place on the ﬁrst Saturday of every month, and on 5 July it marks one year of using this unique setting. Another market in Kimberley, The Big Hole Market, takes place on the last Saturday of each month.

NK-gesondheidwerkers voer stryd

Dit kom voor of wanbetaling aan gesondheidswerkers in die Noord-Kaap ’n groter krisis word. Personeel by die Connie Vorster-hospitaal in Hartswater het sedert Maart geen oortydtoelaes vir nagdiens, naweekwerk of openbare vakansiedae ontvang nie. Dit is soortgelyk aan die wanbetaling aan sessiedokters in Warrenton, asook uitstaande oortydtoelaes wat sedert Augustus aan personeel by die Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe-hospitaal in Kimberley verskuldig is.

Isak Fritz, DA-LPW en NoordKaapse provinsiale woordvoerder van gesondheid, sê sy party het

die provinsiale wetgewer se gesondheidsportefeuljekomitee versoek om dringend te vergader om dié groeiende finansiële krisis aan te spreek.

Personeel van die Helen Bishop-huis, wat na 62 kinders met vereikende fisieke gestremdhede omsien, gaan ook gereeld gebuk onder die nie-betaling van hul salarisse van die provinsiale departement van gesondheid. Fritz sê afgesien van die growwe skending van personeel by die Connie Vorster-hospitaal se dienskontrakte, het hulle met baie uitdagings te kampe, soos dat dit te min personeel het.

"Gesondheidswerkers voer reeds ’n oorlog teen siektes, beserings en swak gesondheid.

“Daar kan nie van hulle verwag word om ook ’n stryd teen die ANC-beheerde provinsiale regering te voer vir ordentlike werksomstandighede en gesondheidsorg van goeie gehalte nie," sê Fritz. Hy sê ook die party wil versekering hê dat die bykomende finansiële inspuiting van meer as R183 miljoen vir die gesondheids- en onderwysdepartement, soos in die provinsiale begroting aangekondig, sal verseker dat vergoedingsverpligtinge streng nagekom word.

Bewysstuk ‘verlê’ in saak

’n Regter het Maandag 9 Junie in die hooggeregshof in Kimberley beveel dat ’n voorverhoorkonferensie gehou word om te bepaal of ’n moordsaak verhoorgereed is nadat die polisie se laboratorium ’n bewysstuk verlê het.

Dié betrokke verhoor behels ’n moordsaak waarin Butiki Simon Maboitshege daarvan aangekla word dat hy sy lewensmaat in Warrenton vermoor het. Dit het in 2024 in Ikhutseng, Warrenton, by sy huis plaasgevind. Hy en sy vriendin, Marly Nero, het op 26 Februarie 2024 by ’n taverne rusie gemaak. Bure het die nag gehoor hoe die oorledene om hulp skreeu. Haar naakte lyk is die volgende oggend op haar bed gevind en haar beserings dui sy is met stomp voorwerpe aangerand. Maboitshege

het glo aangevoer iemand anders het haar vermoor, maar het sy klere verbrand wat hy die betrokke aand aangehad het. Die staat, wat gereed is om met die verhoor te begin, kan dit egter nie doen nie; ook weens uitstaande ondertekende verklarings, wat verband hou met die ketting van bewysstukmateriaal. Adv. Elmari Krüger, aanklaer, wat aanvanklik ’n aansoek wou bring om weer DNS-materiaal te bekom, het dit laat vaar omdat sy ’n ander

verklaring oor die DNS-analise bekom het. Sy het toegegee dat sy die aanklag van regsverydeling teen Maboitshege kan laat vaar as die verlore bewysstuk nie vorendag kom nie.

Heinrich Steynberg, namens die beskuldigde, het aangevoer dat sy kliënt “in aanhouding vergaan” terwyl die verhoor nie kan voortgaan nie. Hy wou ’n aansoek bring vir ’n kommissie van ondersoek vir die hof om te bereg oor die vermiste bewysstukke en gevolglike vertragings.

Adjunkpresident Violet Phatsoane het dit nie toegestaan nie, en aangedring om die tyd wat vir die verhoor uitgesit is, sinvol te gebruik deur ’n voorvonnisverhoor te hou om die saak verhoorgereed te kry. Die staat moet die nodige ondertekende verklarings aan Steynberg oorhandig wat dit met sy kliënt sal bespreek. Die saak is tot Donderdag 12 Junie uitgestel.

Julius Koen is besorg oor veral roofvoëlvrektes by son-en windkragaanlegte. Koen, valkenier van Kimberley wat beseerde roofvoëls onder ’n permit rehabiliteer, was vroeër 'n waarnemende departementshoof van die Noord-Kaapse departement van natuurbewaring.

’n Onlangse verslag van BirdLife Suid-Afrika (SA) toon dat by agt windkragplase in die Fynbos-, Grasveld- en Nama-Karoo-biome waar die witkruisarend voorkom, 46 vrektes was weens botsings met die turbines. Van die ander is deur elektriese skokke dood weens vermoedelik swak ontwerpte interne kraglyne.

Ander bedreigde en krities bedreigde spesies word ook geraak.

“Dit beteken ’n hele bevolking van die hoogs bedreigde voëlspesies kan in ’n omgewing uitgewis wees. Ek het twee swerfvalke ontvang wat van gekonsentreerde sonkragkragaanlegte in Upington en Postmasburg kom. Die voëls se vlerkvere is deur die hitte afgeskroei.

“Hulle kan nie vlieg nie totdat hulle eers later vanjaar verveer en die nuwe vere teen April uitgegroei het. Hulle is die gelukkiges wat oorleef het.”

Hy sê daar is waarskynlik meer voëlvrektes en beserings by groenkragaanlegte, wat nie opgemerk en aangeteken word nie. Die Trust vir Bedreigde Natuurlewe en Birdlife SA doen baie navorsing en werk saam met groenkragaanlegte vir oplossings.

Hy sê sakemanne en boere moet te midde van uitbreiding verantwoordelik wees oor skade aan fauna en flora.

Sy liefde vir roofvoëls kom van kinderdae. Hy is bykans 40 jaar ’n heeltydse valkenier. Ná sy aftrede in 2012 het hy meer tyd om by roofvoëlbewaring en -navorsing betrokke te wees. Koen is die enigste valkenier in die Noord-Kaap en hoop dat jong mense ook dié liefde vir roofvoëls sal aankweek.

“Mense het betreurenswaardig nie meer aanvoeling vir die natuur nie. ’n Mens hoop dat die ouer geslag boere, wat probleemdiere vergiftig het, minder

Hulle het verder die binneland in versprei saam met mensgemaakte plantasies.

“Ons weet ook van neste by Jacobsdal in die Vrystaat, en soek aanhoudend langs die Riet- en Vaalrivier vir neste in denne- of bloekombome, wat die eerste noord van die Oranjerivier sal wees.”

Building bridges to the future

On Saturday, 7 June, high school teams participated in the South African Institution of Civil Engineering’s (SAICE) provincial bridge building competition in the Diamond Pavilion Shopping Mall in Kimberley. From early on in the day, the teams commenced to plan and construct their bridges, using dowel sticks, glue, and a piece of string. The ultimate test took place later the afternoon when each bridge was put to the test with weights. The competition was initiated by SAICE in 1991, and 34 years later, it is still going strong. It has enjoyed many successes and enjoyed by learners from across the country. On Saturday, a Gr.12 trio of the Technical High School (THS) Kimberley took first place. They are, from the left, Outlwile Mohlakoana, Keamogetswe Lekwene, and Letshego Macomo. Last year, this same team made it to second place. “Ek wens sy wil net haar deel doen en reg doen,” kla sy en skud haar kop.

Die meeste beroepe werk op die beginsel van ’n monteerband. Dit is minder algemeen dat jy alleen die werk doen en ’n resultaat moet lewer.

Daar is iemand wat inligting versamel en dit aan iemand anders moet gee om hul deel van die werk te doen. Daar is een wat ’n banktransaksie laai en iemand anders wat dit moet goedkeur. Daar is mense wat rekeninge betaal en iemand anders wat die liassering doen. Daar is ’n magdom van inligting wat hande verwissel.

As iemand finansiële state opstel, is daar agter hierdie bladsye vol syfers ’n reeks interaksies, kommunikasie en werk wat deur ’n verskeidenheid mense verrig is. As ons na verskillende bedrywe

kyk, werk dit soos ’n monteerband. Iemand bestel ’n produk. Dit word vervoer en afgelaai. Dit word in ’n pakkamer gebêre; op ’n stelsel ingevoer; op ’n rak gepak. Dit word van die rak afgehaal en gekoop. Daar vind ’n verkooptransaksie plaas. Die produk word verpak en van die perseel verwyder.

’n Geweldige frustrasie ontstaan wanneer almal nie hul deel betyds doen of goed doen nie.

Die take wat verrig word by ’n voertuig op ’n monteerband is nie almal ewe ingewikkeld nie. Dit is wel almal belangrik. As al die dele nie reg en stewig aanmekaargesit is nie, gaan daar negatiewe gevolge wees.

Mense sien nie altyd die groter prentjie nie. As hulle dit wat hulle moet doen, betyds en goed doen, gaan die eindproduk soveel beter wees.

En diegene om hulle gaan baie minder frustrasie ervaar.

Deursigtigheid bied hoop as donkerte dreig

Kort ná die onlangse en beplande waterafsluiting wat vir vyf dae in die Noord-Kaapse hoofstad geduur het, het wydverspreide kragonderbrekings in die stad plaasgevind. Omdat dit sekerlik ’n invloed op mekaar het, het verstopte rioolstelsels en weer eens (kortstondige) waterafsluitings hiermee gepaard gegaan.

Terloops, die Sol Plaatje-munisipaliteit kan geprys word vir deurlopende en goeie kommunikasie tydens die onlangse vyfdag-waterafsluiting.

Elke dag is ’n opsomming van die vordering gegee, gestaaf met foto's en video-onderhoude. Selfs onvoorsiene tegniese uitdagings wat oponthoude in die werksprogram veroorsaak het, is eerlik deurgegee, met ’n verduideliking. Deursigtigheid is sekerlik ’n goeie woord om dié kommunikasie wat plaasgevind het, te beskryf.

Ook tydens verlede week se wydverspreide kragonderbrekings het die kommunikasie-afdeling voortdurend inligting uitgestuur, oor waar die foute is, en wat daaraan gedoen word.

In van die verklarings oor die kragonderbrekings skryf die munisipaliteit: “Cause of outage: Emanates from persistent vandalism and theft at H.A. Morris Substation,” “Cause of outage: Emanated from excessive damage to a transformer, likened to sabotage" en “An explosion

Volgens talle aanlynbronne kan inwoners van ’n dorp of stad tot swak dienslewering van ’n munisipaliteit bydra. Dit sluit die nie-betaling van diensterekeninge in, asook vandalisme en apatie rondom die hele proses van dienslewering.

Dat die voete van klei van dié munisipaliteit deur dekades telkens al verkrummel het, is nie te betwyfel nie. Daar is nog jare van werk en uithou en aanhou oor voordat die gewilde sinsnede “Putting the sparkle back in the Diamond City” enigsins van toepassing kan wees.

Maar intussen kan die deursigtige kommunikasie vanaf die munisipaliteit hoop bied waar almal met voete van klei vaste grond kan vind.

Die gesprek met hierdie tienermeisie was uiteraard baie jare gelede, maar steeds bly haar seer my by. Sy moes voortdurend inval by iemand anders se wil.

In die gebrokenheid van die lewe is dit maklik om in ’n slagoffermentaliteit te verval.

Dit is ’n ingesteldheid gevorm deur pyn, gebrokenheid of onregverdige diskriminasie. Hierdie perspektief sê: “Ek is magteloos.” Dit is om jou omstandighede of ander mense te verwyt vir die situasie waarin jy jouself bevind. Jy bly vashaak by die pyn van die verlede. Hoewel dit belangrik is om lyding te erken, was dit nooit God se bedoeling dat ons deur ons wonde gedefinieer moet word nie. Psalm 34:18 verseker ons: “Die Here is naby aan die gebrokenes van hart; Hy red die wat verslae is van gees.” God ontmoet ons in ons pyn, maar Hy laat ons nie daar nie.

Hoop beteken nie om te ontken wat gebeur het nie, maar om te glo in wat God vir jou kan doen. Jesaja 61:3 beloof dat Hy vir dié in Sion wat treur, eer sal gee in plaas van smart, vreugde in plaas van droefheid, blydskap in plaas van hartseer. Dit is nie net profetiese woorde nie. Dit is ’n goddelike werklikheid vir dié wat op Hom vertrou.

Put wheels to the dirt to conquer challenging Sungazer

Warick Minkley and Cameron-Jeanne Pitchers were the first man and woman to cross the finishing line in the recent Sungazer 100 Miler cycling race, in 4:52:36 and 6:02:08, respectively. This event, presented by Oryx Endurance Event Management, took place on 31 May, commencing from Bloemfontein. Cyclers had the opportunity to enter for the 160km, 75km or 44km distance, which catered for various levels of challenge and experience on scenic gravel roads. Daniël Stroebel is the winner in the men’s category in the 75km race, and Elizma Kock in the women’s category. Performances rewarded

Students of Konoha Martial Arts from Kathu and the region offered a stellar performance at the annual Winter Challenge held in Christiana.

A total of 19 students of the martial arts school attended the tournament on 31 May, bringing home an impressive 49 medals. These include 22 gold medals, 16 silver medals, and 11 bronze. The tournament saw participation in

five different styles, with students from four provinces present.

Soke Sensei Rainer Jacobs expressed his gratitude to Sensei Janko Jansen van Vuuren and Sensei Armand Grobler for their hard work, which contributed to the team’s remarkable results.
