Die Zimbabwiër wat glo onwettig in die land is en verdink word dat hy drie mense se dood in twee ongelukke kort op mekaar in Junie verlede jaar in Kimberley veroorsaak het, het op Donderdag 3 April sy regsverteenwoordiger afgedank op die dag dat die verhoor in die streekhof sou begin.
Die hofsaal was vol PA-ondersteuners, sommige wat saam met twee van die oorledenes in die minibussie was nadat hulle van ’n politieke saamtrek teruggekeer en die ongeluk gebeur het.
Collin Nhlanga (39) was glo agter die stuur van die wit Nissan Navara-bakkie wat op 30 Junie 2024 omstreeks 14:30 eers ’n voetganger, wat ’n belowende jong krieketspeler was, by die kruising van Barklyweg en Selekestraat in Homelite in Kimberley getref, weggejaag en na bewering teen ’n hoë spoed agter in ’n taxi vol PA-vrywilligers by ’n rooi verkeerslig in Homestead in Barklyweg vasgery het. Videomateriaal toon hoe die minibustaxi met 14 passasiers daarbinne ná die botsing omslaan. Twee van die passasiers het, soos die voetganger, aan hul beserings beswyk.

aanklagte in die gesig gestaar wat insluit een aanklag van strafbare manslag, twee van moord, dronkbestuur, natalige bestuur, versuim om by die ongelukstoneel stil te hou en dat hy onwettig in die land is.
Die voetganger was Omphile Jonas (16), ’n leerling aan die Hoërskool Vuyolwethu en ’n belowende krieketspeler wat vir Noord-Kaap Krieket gespeel het. Op Facebook is hy deur die krieketklub as ’n baie talentvolle linkerarm-draaibouler beskryf.
Mi-Kayla Booysen (18) en Cavino Matthews (24) was passasiers in die minibustaxi wat saam met hul mede-partylede op pad terug was van Kathu waar hulle by ’n jeugfees was. Booysen is op 2 Julie aan haar beserings oorlede en Matthews op 19 Julie.

die staat wat noodbehandeling op sy eie dogter moes doen.
“Dit is net God wat ons dra; my dogter sou volgende week 19 jaar oud word. ’n Beweerde onwettige immigrant wat op ons belastingbetalers se geld leef en regshulp
kry. Dit maak nie sin nie. Ons wil hê die saak moet eerder in die hooggeregshof sit,” sê Booysen.
Die saak is tot 16 April uitgestel sodat ’n ander Regshulp Suid-Afrika verteenwoordiger vir Nhlanga aangestel kan word.
March planned to remove pitbulls

After a ten-year-old girl from Galeshewe in Kimberley was seriously injured by a pitbull, a march was planned for Tuesday, 8 April, to the Witdam Police Station to hand over a petition calling for the removal of all pitbulls in Galeshewe.
Reatlegile Pitsoemang, who is still in the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital in the city, has apparently lost an eye and is also suffering from other severe injuries after the attack on 2 April.
The police urged members of the public to refrain from posting photographs of the attack and the girl’s injuries on social media.
Northern Cape police spokesperson, Lt. Col Sergio Kock, also said the police in Galeshewe were investigating a case of negligence or failure to prevent an animal to cause injury to another person, against the owner of the dog. It is alleged that on 2 April at approximately 18:00 children were playing in Phutane Street in Galeshewe when the girl was attacked by the pitbull. The dog was removed from the property of the owner the following day.
Kock said that Section 1(1) of the Animal Matters Amendment Act provides that any person, as a result of whose negligence an animal causes injury to another person, shall be guilty of an offense and liable on conviction to a fine or imprisonment for a period not exceeding two years. The victim and their parents or guardian may also approach the civil court for a claim of civil damages as a result of the injury, trauma, medical costs suffered, as well as future medical costs.

Block-familie verlig ná appèlaansoek van oudregter misluk

Die familie van John Block, oudNoord-Kaapse ANC-leier wat sy parool uitdien nadat hy in 2016 aan korrupsie skuldig bevind is, is verlig nadat ’n appèlaansoek teen hom oor ’n lastereis van R1,5miljoen in die Hoogste hof van Appèl met koste afgewys is.
Regter F. Kathree-Setiloane en waarnemende regter P. Molitsoane AJA het op 26 Maart bevind daar is geen redelike vooruitsig vir sukses nie en daarom die appèlaansoek afgewys. Die saak spruit uit ’n lastereis van die Noord-Kaapse oudregterpresident Frans Kgomo teen Block en
twee prokureurs wat verlede jaar in die hooggeregshof in Kimberley aangehoor is. In die uitspraak is Block se destydse prokureur wat intussen oorlede is, se boedel gelas om R150 000 aan Kgomo te betaal, asook die regskoste van die ander partye. Die eis teen Block en nog ’n prokureur het misluk waarna Kgomo die Appèlhof genader het. In die saak het Kgomo vir Block, sy destydse regsverteenwoordiger wyle Abel (Dali) Mjila, asook Nano Matlala, ’n prokureur, vir laster gedagvaar. Dit spruit uit Block se strafverhoor in 2016 waarin adjunkregterpresident Violet Phatsoane die voorsittende beampte was wat Block en Christo Scholtz aan korrupsie skuldig bevind het. Block het voor sy destydse vonniso-
plegging in ’n eedsverklaring beweer dat Kgomo onbehoorlike invloed op Phatsoane sou uitoefen om Block skuldig te bevind. In sy eis het Kgomo aangevoer sy waardigheid en integriteit is aangetas deur die publikasie van die ongegronde bewerings.
Block het voordat hy op parool vrygelaat is, in die lastereis getuig Mjila as sy destydse prokureur, het hom vertel dat Matlala van die beweerde voorval by ’n ongeïdentifiseerde regter verneem het. Block het sy regspan vertrou en op sy regte gesteun.
Wyle Mjila het in sy pleitstuk gesê hy het die inligting van Matlala verkry en dit in die teenwoordigheid van ’n senior advokaat met Block bespreek.
Matlala het in die getuiebank ontken dat die telefoniese gesprek tussen
die regters ooit plaasgevind of dat hy iemand daarvan vertel het. Regter Nathan Erasmus het destyds in sy uitspraak bevind dat Matlala nie verantwoordelik gehou kan word nie. Mjila het nie voldoende bewyse ingedien om sy pleitstuk te ondersteun nie. Block het redelik onder die omstandighede en sy regspan se raad opgetree. In ’n verklaring op Facebook sê die Block-familie hulle glo die eis het geen meriete gehad nie.
“Ons verwelkom die beslissing van die Appèlhof, wat uiteindelik die ongegronde regsaksies teen ons familie ten einde bring. Dit het vir John onnodige angs veroorsaak. Dit was 'n toenemende frustrerende en lastige beproewing. Dit het gevoel soos ’n meedoënlose poging om John se
reputasie te skend, en ’n begeerte om sy vrede en veiligheid te ontwrig.
“Sy fundamentele reg om vry en met waardigheid te leef is ondermyn in die lastige regseise. Dit was asof sy vryheid, wat ’n reg moet wees, vir sekere mense voortdurende irritasie en ergernis geword het.”
Luidens die verklaring het Block vertroue in die oppergesag van die reg en integriteit van die regstelsel, en respekteer hy regsinstellings en owerhede wat grondwetlike waardes en menswaardigheid respekteer.
“Ons hoop dit is die laaste hoofstuk in ’n reeks futiele pogings om Block se vrede te versteur, en dat hy toegelaat sal word om ’n normale lewe te lei, vry van die skaduwee van ongegronde bewerings,” lui die verklaring.
ROAD A FATAL TRAP FOR MOTORISTS
Three separate vehicle accidents occured within a 24-hour period on the notorious R31 road in the Northern Cape, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries.
The first accident, 5km from Barkly West and close to Pniel, took place on Sunday, 6 April, at approximately 16:35, says Lt. Col Sergio Kock, police spokesperson, when an Isuzu minitruck reportedly overturned. Both male occupants sustained serious injuries and were transported to hospital for medical treatment. A case of reckless and negligent driving has been registered.
Roughly an hour later, at around 17:30, a second collision occurred on the R31 near Gong-Gong, where it is alleged that an Audi and a BMW collided with a truck.
The truck overturned and came to a standstill on its side in the middle of the road. Each vehicle had a single
male occupant.
The driver of the Audi was declared deceased on the scene, while the drivers of the BMW and the truck sustained injuries and were taken to hospital. The road was closed to traffic until approximately 03:00 on Monday. A culpable homicide investigation is underway by the police in Barkly West.
The third incident occurred on Monday, at about 05:30, approximately 15km outside Barkly West on the R31.
A stationary truck, which had reportedly broken down on the roadside, was struck by another truck. The driver and passenger of the second truck sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospital for medical treatment. A case of reckless and negligent driving has been registered.
The road was reopened at approximately 09:30.

Estie Botha van die Caritas Gemeenskapsfokus in Kimberley is as die Hoopdraer vir 2025 in die Noord-Kaap aangewys.
Dié eerbewys erken maatskaplike werkers wat tot die hantering van maatskaplike uitdagings bydra, en ’n veilige ruimte en geborgenheid vir diegene skep wat dit nodig het. Haar pad het met emosionele en forensiese assessering gekruis, en sy het met spelterapie begin. Caritas het sedert 2000 op klein skaal met ’n terapeutiese eenheid vir getraumatiseerde kinders begin, en dit het uitgebrei na ’n volledige toegeruste terapiesentrum wat dienste
aan kinders en volwassenes lewer. In 2023 het Botha haar tweede M-graad, in forensiese assessering, verwerf. Dit is haar passie om mense te begelei tot herstel en ontwikkeling.
Botha werk aan ’n eenheid vir Caritas wat op ontwikkeling en opleiding vir Caritas se personeel fokus, en bied opleiding met werknemershulpprogramme aan ondernemings. Sy bied ook ondersteuning en opleiding aan gemeenskapsversorgingprojekte deur kerke, en bied ’n pastorale ondersteuningsprogram aan die NG kerk van die Noord-Kaap ten tye van rampe. Sy word as ’n waardige ontvanger van dié eerbewys beskou, omdat sy daadwerklik tot sterker gemeenskapsontwikkelingstrukture en gesonder gemeenskappe bydra.

Op pad na skouspel van Augrabies-waterval
Met oorvol opgaardamme in die sentrale binneland, en al hoe meer sluise wat oopgemaak word, word verwag dat die Augrabies-waterval, ongeveer 36km vanaf Kakamas en 120km vanaf Upington, binnekort ’n donderende skouspel gaan wees wat die betekenis van sy naam, “Plek van groot geraas”, gestand gaan doen. Die Augrabies-waterval is in die vloei van die Oranjerivier, en sy water is van die Oranje- en Vaalrivier afkomstig. Dié twee riviere vloei naby Douglas ineen, met die Oranjerivier wat tussen Alexanderbaai en Oranjemund in die Atlantiese Oseaan uitmond. Hele bestel het skuld aan honde-aanval
Met ’n volronde gesig kyk die maan vandeesweek op moederaarde toe, so saam met die Internasionale Dag van Menslike Ruimtevlugte wat op Saterdag 12 April herdenk word.
Op dié dag in 1961 is die eerste ruimtekapsule met ’n mens aan boord die ruimte ingestuur. Hiertydens het Yuri Gagarin, ’n Sowjet-burger, een wentelbaan om die aarde in die ruimtekapsule Vostok 1 voltooi. Dié reis het glo 108 minute geduur teen ’n spoed van 27 400km per uur.
Met hierdie ruimtevlug was die Russe die eerste om ’n mens die ruimte in te stuur. Soos dit met die mensdom en die diereryk gaan, het die mens egter jare voor dit diere in verwante eksperimente gebruik, en is talle spesies in ruimtetuie en -kapsules die ruimte ingeskiet. So is vrugtevlieë, apies, honde, katte, skilpaaie, muise, rotte, hase, visse, paddas, spinnekoppe, insekte en selfs kwartel-eiers glo die ruimte in.
Die verhouding tussen mens en dier word deur uiterstes gekenmerk.

eie TV-stelletjie, wat masserings en skoonheidsbehandelings kry; tot vasgeketting of ingehok in haglike omstandighede, weerloos teen weersomstandighede en verwaarlosing. Of mense wat hul verbeel dat wilde diere Disney-karakters is. In woonbuurtes word groter honde meestal as waghonde en afskrikmiddel vir kwaaddoeners aangehou, en kleiner hondjies as “geselskap” en alarmmakers, veral snags. ’n Mens neem egter so gereeld waar dat honde skynbaar oneindiglik blaf. Is dié geblaf omdat die dier gefrustreerd of eensaam is, of weens opgehoopte energie?
Verlede week se aanval van ’n pitbull op ’n tienjarige kind in Galeshewe, Kimberley, het die debat oor dié honderas laat ontvlam, die omstandighede waarin honde aangehou word, asook beveiligingsmetodes om toegang tot dié diere te beperk. Uiteenlopende menings oor wat tot dié spesifieke aanval gelei het, gaan niks aan die feit verander dat dié kind vir die res van haar lewe geskend is nie. ’n Mens kan byna nie anders as om vinger na ’n hele bestel te wys nie.

Wanneer ’n mens ’n bietjie gaan stilstaan in die natuur, besef jy hoe min ’n mens werklik weet. Hoe meer ’n mens aangegryp word deur die grootsheid van die natuur, hoe kleiner word jy in jouself.
Met die jaarlikse Vasbyt hier in die Noord-Kaap die afgelope week het ek net weer onder die indruk gekom van hoe min ek werklik weet.
Die formaat van hierdie wedloop is so saamgestel dat jy eintlik ure lank kan loop net met jou eie geselskap – jy in die natuur, sonder om ’n mens te sien.
Dit is tydens só ’n stappie, dat niemand kilo-

meters voor my is nie en niemand kilometers ná my nie, dat ek begin vrae vra oor die natuur.
Met die pragtige reënseisoen is die veld lieflik groen en alles roep en getuig van lewe.

Die tarentale pik orals rond en duidelik getuig al die dierespore in die veld van ’n ywerige naglewe hier in die bosse.
Die grootsheid van die natuur maak my klein.

Die mens is gewoon te klein.

Dure les altyd te leer

“Dit was nou ’n dure les,” sê mense. Ek wonder hoekom dit altyd duur moet wees. Kan dit nie maar net ’n goedkoop een wees nie?
Dié soort les sou waarskynlik nie so ’n groot invloed gehad het nie. Dit sou dalk geen verskil aan die pad vorentoe gemaak het nie. Een dure les is ongelukkig nie voldoende nie. Deur die loop van die lewe wag daar verskeie dure lesse wat ons moet leer. En as ons nie hierdie les die eerste keer onder die knie kry nie, wag dieselfde soort les vir ons iewers in die toekoms. Dit gaan waarskynlik ook nie goedkoop wees nie. Die omskrywing van duur impliseer dat die betrokke les ons iets gekos het.
Dat daar skade was. Hierdie skade kan verskeie vorme aanneem. Emosioneel. Finansieel. Fisiek. Intellektueel. Ons
kon beperkte tyd aan iets bestee het – wat later deel van hierdie dure les sou uitmaak.
Dit kan ons kosbare verhoudinge kos.
Sou ons ons hand op ’n warm plaat druk en baie seerkry, sou ons dit die res van ons lewe nie weer doen nie. ’n Mens sou dink dat al die dure lesse ons ’n leeftyd lank bybly.
Oor sekere lesse het ons onsself belowe dat ons dit nooit weer sal hoef te leer nie. Een keer is meer as genoeg. Vorentoe gaan ons op die uitkyk vir sekere gevaartekens wees.
Ongelukkig is dit nie so eenvoudig nie. Voordat ons ons kry, het ons weer die gevaartekens verontagsaam en in ’n spreekwoordelike slaggat getrap. Dalk was die gevaartekens hierdie keer effens verdoesel.
Solank as wat ons asem haal, gaan daar lesse wees wat ons moet leer. Dure lesse.
Watter dure les het jy onlangs geleer?
reeds voorberei vir die winter wat kom. Hulle dra almal kos na die mierneste toe aan, jy sien hulle nêrens sonder kos aan die beweeg nie.
Ek wonder hoe het hulle geweet dit is tyd om te begin spaar vir die winter.
Ek wonder hoe het die likkewaan sy maat gevind.
Ek wonder waar het die slang heen geseil dat ek net die spoor sien.
En ek wonder oor die gras wat so groei en die natuur wat herfs begin wys.
En hoe weet die reën wanneer genoeg genoeg is.
Ná alles besef ek maar net weer: Die hele skepping getuig van haar Skepper.

Die aarde het gesug terwyl dit in ’n geel-bruin kombers van droogte geklee was, ’n kleed wat die landskap verwurg het. Die son se genadelose staar het selfs skaduwees verdryf. Die skape het skaars geblêr, die wind het stofwolke rondgedra. ’n Onuitgesproke dors het in die lug gehang. Die gewag was ondraaglik. Toe, soos ’n fluistering, het die lug begin verander in die tweede week van Maart. Herfs het reën gebring. Gordyne het oor horisonne gesweef, die wind het ’n koelte gebring wat lankal vergete was. Beswete gesigte is na bo gerig, die eerste druppels het geval. Groot en swaar trane van verligting. Die aarde het dit gulsig gesluk. Nog. Nog. Nog.
Die reën was ’n simfonie van verlossing. Soms sagte motreën, soms stortreën. Water het oor die dorre velde gestroom, krake gevul en die stof weggespoel. ’n Aardse geur van nat grond het bedwelm. Kameeldoringbome is skoongewas, die voëls het baljaar. Reën is nie net water nie; dit is hoop, ’n nuwe begin, ’n herlewing. Reën is ’n geskenk, ’n seën, ’n wonderwerk. Terwyl ons na die nat landskap kyk, besef ons die ware betekenis van dankbaarheid. Dankbaarheid vir die water, vir die lewe, vir die verlossing van die reën.

Dit is oorhandig as deel van ’n projek van die Kuruman-tak van die Vrouelandbouvereniging (VLV). Volgens Alta Roets, sameroeper vir gesondheid van die VLV Kuruman-tak, vat die projek hande met die Vrouelandbouverening van Kaapland (VLVK) se projek vir 2025: “Bejaardes maak saak.”

Die sesde jaarlikse Matsa 100 Miler-fietsryuitdaging is, soos verlede jaar, deur Dusty Day (foto) gewen. Day het die ongeveer 160km in 6:01:15 voltooi. Mauritz Jurack was tweede (6:37:12), en Willie Jonker kort op sy hakke (6:37:13). Adele Lübbe, die enigste vrou wat die afstand voltooi het, het dit in 9:21:14 gedoen. Tye wat vanjaar behaal is, is heelwat stadiger as verlede jaar. Nat, modderige toestande wat elke trapbeweging ’n uitdaging gemaak het, het daartoe bygedra, asook sterk wind. Deelnemers kon hulle vir die 160km-, 120km- of 60km-ren inskryf. Die byeenkoms het op 29 Maart vanaf die Magersfontein Gholf-landgoed plaasgevind. Mettle on display
The Upington-based men’s team walked away as winners at the Northern Cape Bowls (NCB) Fours Championship, where 16 top teams of the province battled it out.
Intense competition, dramatic finishes, and standout performances were features of this event at the end of March in Kimberley.
Brothers LeRoux and Wessel Fourie, alongside teammates Werner Matthee and Michael Siepker, sealed the victory for Upington.
The bronze medal went to the KEW Bowling Club’s Roy Williams, Carlon Moodaley, Keshan Moodaley and Shaun Campfer.
In the women’s finals, Annelie Mathewson, René van Niekerk, Helena Janse and Nadine Dames from Kimberley clashed with Sonja Bean, Niekie Kotze, Miranda van Wyk and Charmaine Loock from Kathu, with the Kimberley team maintaining control.
The bronze medal match saw Maria Sequeira, Liezel Kock, Rentia Pienaar and Santjie Venter of Conroy defeating Geraldine Moodaley, Raff Matthews, Michelle van Zyl, and Louisa Williams of the KEW Bowling Club to claim third place.
The NCB extends its gratitude to the hosting clubs, Beaconsfield Park and Sol Plaatje West End, for their hospitality and facilities.
At the Bowls South Africa (BSA) Junior Nationals, held in Bloemfontein from 29 March to 1 April, the Northern Cape junior teams delivered outstanding performances throughout the tournament, despite facing significant challenges, including limited practice sessions and last-minute withdrawals.
The U18 team won three of their six games. Two of their losses were heartbreakingly close, with only a single shot separating them from victory against Sedibeng, who topped the section, and the Western Province, who finished second.
The two U25 teams matches were highly competitive. The experience will benefit them in future.
A special mention goes to Kieran Kelly, Japie Steyn, Andrei Matthee and Kenneth Penderis, who secured a bronze medal. They advanced to the semifinals against the Northern Free State.
Braam van der Westhuizen, NCB president, expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to the teams’ success, with special thanks to secretary Caren van der Westhuizen for handling the extensive preparations and managing the U18 team. Cathy and Gavin Penderis are thanked for managing the U25 teams.
