No DNA, Just RSA

They may have upheld South Africa’s name, but we can say they are the Overberg’s pride.

Two sportsmen from the Overberg, Demitri Erasmus from Grabouw and Mateo le Roux from Caledon, achieved excellent feats this past week when they were crowned as

the world’s and Africa’s best. It cost hard work, but according to these two athletes, the effort was worth it, because without dreaming big, the support of your community and faith in God, your dreams will never become a reality.

In 2023, Demitri Erasmus from Grabouw said he would

like to run out for the Bok team. Two years later he ran out for the junior Boks and they were crowned World Champions on Saturday. What makes this victory even more remarkable is that the Bokkies managed to reach this achievement after 13 years when they gave the New Zealand team a 23-15 beating

during the World Cup championship in Italy. (Read story on page 15).

Similarly, we can proudly report of the humble Mateo le Roux from Caledon who became the African champion in high jump last week after he triumphed in Nigeria during the CAA-u-18/u-20 Championships

in Abeokuta with a winning height of 2.06 m. (Read story on page 16). Mateo, a former learner at Hoërskool Overberg who received a bursary to continue his high school career at Hoërskool Stellenbosch, has excelled in high jump from a young age and his hard work and perseverance is now bearing fruit.

EPWPs trained in health and safety

Theewaterskloof Municipality (TWK) recently awarded 24 EPWP (Expanded Public Works Programme) participants with Health and Safety Level 2 certificates.

TWK Municipal Manager Walter Hendricks said: “Our workers, the EPWP and others are very important and invaluable to our municipality, and we need to look after the health and safety of our staff. It is good that you did this course to obtain this certification, and I am sure that it will help you pave the way for your future.”

TWK Executive Mayor Lincoln de Bruyn said: “It is both an honour and a pleasure to stand before you today as we gather to celebrate a significant milestone in our municipality’s commitment to skills development and community upliftment. Today marks not only the completion of the Health and Safety Level 2 training programme, but also the beginning of a new chapter in the professional journeys of 24 dedicated participants.”

He said the EPWP is more than just a government initiative; it is a visionary platform that transforms lives.

“As a cross-cutting function, EPWP training underpins all our sectors, namely infrastructure, social and environment and culture, ensuring that no matter where a participant’s interests lie there is an opportu-

nity to grow, learn and make a tangible contribution to society.

“Recognising the critical importance of workplace safety, Theewaterskloof Municipality appointed a service provider to deliver comprehensive Health and Safety Level 2 training. In just one day of intensive instruction our 24 participants

immersed themselves in the principles and practices that protect lives, preserve health and uphold the highest standards of workplace safety. These competencies are not only essential for EPWP projects but serve as a foundation for every future endeavour in their careers.”

utive Mayor of TWK, congratulated all the graduates and also emphasised the importance of health and safety in the workplace. The certificate handover took place in the Caledon Council Chambers. Due to transport problems not all the participants were present.

Rain not enough

The Western Cape’s dam levels across the province continue their steady climb, with the Cape Town Water Supply System now sitting at an encouraging 83,5% capacity, yet lower than last year’s more than 95% level in the same period.

The latest hydrological report from the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) shows a good recovery, with levels jumping from 78,84% just a few weeks ago, representing an overall increase of nearly 20% compared to readings taken a month earlier.

This positive trajectory comes as consistent winter rainfall has provided much-needed relief to the province’s water reserves, which have faced significant pressure in recent years.

However, Western Cape Provincial Head of DWS Ntombizanele Bila-Mupariwa, cautioned against complacency despite the encouraging figures.

“We are pleased with the recovery of our dam levels,” she said, “and we would like to encourage both residents and businesses to continue using water responsibly despite

the increase as we cannot predict the rain patterns for the following weeks. The recovery has been widespread across the province’s major water sources, with most dams recording significant gains over the past seven days.”

The standout performer has been Steenbras Lower Dam, which recorded a dramatic 22,63% increase week-on-week, jumping from 51,17% to 76,20%. Two dams – Berg River and Steenbras Upper – are now operating above full capacity

at 100,40% and 100%, respectively, indicating optimal water-storage conditions.

The Theewaterskloof Dam, the largest in the Western Cape Water Supply System, has shown steady improvement, reaching 78,8% from 75,57% the previous week. But it still remains quite a bit lower than last year’s level, when it was almost at capacity in July. The De Bos at Hermanus: 100%, Buffelsrivier at Betty’s Bay: 100%, Kraaibosch at Gansbaai: 100%, Koekemoer at Pearly Beach: 100% and Pearly Beach: 82%.

‘Keep dogs inside during cold weather’

It is meant to be your best friend, but every day dogs are taken away from their owners due to neglect.

Animals, especially dogs, suffer to a large dregree in winter. It recently came to light that more than 50 dogs froze to death in the Worcester district, most of them small puppies. “Altogether 57 dogs have died due to the cold weather in the Worcester area,” said Juanita Everson of a rescue centre in Worcester. No cases of cats had been reported so far.

Everson regarded the 57 deaths as shocking; in her 13 years of working with animals she had never encountered so many deaths due to the cold weather.

Rinaldi Meyer of the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (Haws) confirmed six dogs had died from the cold in Hawston. “In one incident the owner could not find her dog,

and the following morning the neighbour found it dead outside. In another incident, the owners did not believe that their dog, who was already old, should sleep in the garage or inside, and the dog was also found dead the following morning.

“There are dogs such as Huskies and Alsations that are made for this cold weather,” Shirley Surridge of the Grabouw Animal Welfare Society (Gaws) said. “The best way to protect your pet from the cold is to keep them indoors. Imagine yourself staying outside the whole night without any protection. If it is not possible to keep your dog inside then you should let your animals sleep on blankets in kennels, which can block the worst of the cold out.”

She said it is important that a dog’s bedding stays dry, and if it doesn’t have a kennel then a cardboard box can serve

the purpose. “Cardboard boxes are perfect because they regulate heat. In the case of cardboard boxes – especially where puppies are involved – they should be lined with newspaper, which regulates heat.”

Vanya Schoeffmann of Caledon Animal Welfare said the agency has kennels for dog owners. “We don’t have statistics on the dogs in the town, but we do have kennels if people need them.”

Jacques Peacock, head of communications for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA), said possible sentences for those found guilty of animal neglect and keeping an animal in any place that offers inadequate protection from heat or cold include 12 months in prison and/or a fine of R40 000. He said the court can also order that the offender be denied ownership of animals.

Farmer applies to have assault case withdrawn

The case against a farmer accused of assaulting his former girlfriend and allegedly ripping chunks of her hair out has been postponed pending the outcome of an application to the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) to have the case dismissed.

A well-known farmer from the Riviersonderend district, appeared in the Hermanus Regional Court last week on a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The alleged assault reportedly took place in October 2023 when the complainant and accused, who have since separated, reportedly argued while driving home after a night out in Hermanus.

The woman reportedly suffered a sprained nose, swollen eyes and bruises to her face, and was also reportedly left with bald patches at the back of her head where the accused allegedly pulled the

hair from her scalp.

The farmer’s attorney, William Booth, confirmed “very detailed representations” had been submitted to the NDPP’s office, as the defence believed there was insufficient evidence to proceed with the court case.

During the court proceedings the state prosecutor, Harold Engelbrecht, confirmed the case docket was with the NDPP.

The case was postponed to 17 September pending the outcome of the NDPP’s decision.

The accused’s bail has been extended until then.

But the victim’s father who has diligently attended every court proceeding since 2023 said he will fight until his last breath to see justice served for his daughter.

He added he was willing to go as far as pursuing private prosecution should the decision be in favour of the defence.

Crime fighting successes

Integration, cooperation and good partnerships seem to be the key to crime-fighting efforts in Hermanus. Col Gustav Tamboer, Hermanus Police Station commander, attributed the 10,8% decrease in crime for the first quarter of the new financial year, compared to the same period in 2024, to good cooperation and integrated efforts among various role-players, including local neighbourhood watches, Overstrand Municipality’s Law Enforcement Unit and private security companies.

These paid off with a marked increase of 83,7% in crimes heavily dependent on police action for detection. This is seen as a positive increase. One of these that showed a significant increase is dealing in liquor without a licence, which increased by 68,9% compared to the same period last year.

Tamboer said although four more murder cases than the previous year were reported, it was balanced out

ADVERTORIAL

by the arrests made. “Contact crimes came down by 9,9% while property-related crimes showed a decrease of 26,7% and trio crimes (residential and business robberies and carjackings) decreased by 25%.”

By targeting known drug dens and shebeens through integrated operations with other law-enforcement agencies, such as the Overstrand Law Enforcement Unit, the police also managed to bring crimes associated with substance abuse down, such as attempted murder (-28,5%), common assault (-12,7%) and burglaries at residences (-13,4%).

Regarding gender-based-violence cases, the number of sexual assault cases decreased by 75% while a drop of 50% in rape cases was recorded.

“Burglaries at businesses decreased by 71,4% while the number of robbery with aggravating circumstances cases declined by 9,09%,” Tamboer stated.

“Bravo Hermanus!"

Legally, can I extend my

Owning property in a sectional-title scheme involves shared ownership of common spaces, which are collectively managed by all unit owners. What happens when a unit owner wants to extend their property onto this communal land?

The process is possible, but strict legal and procedural requirements must be met.

Common property includes areas not forming part of any individual unit, and any alterations to it must be approved by the body corporate. The primary concern is ensuring modifications do not affect the stability of the building or interfere with the rights of other owners.

To extend a unit an owner must first apply to the body corporate and obtain a special resolution from fellow owners, as mandated by the Sectional Titles Act. Without this approval any extension would be considered unlawful and could lead to legal consequences.

Once approval is granted the next step is to engage an architect or a land surveyor to draft a sectional plan of the extension. This plan must be submitted to the Surveyor-General for review. Following approval, the final step involves registering the extended unit with the Registrar of Deeds.

It is important to note that the body corporate is not obligated to approve every request. It may impose conditions or even reject the proposal if it deems the extension

unsuitable. Each case is considered on its own merits, with a focus on compliance with laws and the overall interests of the scheme.

If you are considering extending your unit, consulting with our professionals can help you navigate the legal complexities, prepare a strong proposal, and improve your chances of approval. Proper planning and compliance with regulations are essential to ensuring a smooth and successful expansion.

Mandela Day celebrated

In November 2009 the United Nations declared 18 July, late former PresidentNelson Mandela’s birthday, as International Nelson Mandela Day. This day not only honours his legacy, but encourages organisations and individuals to dedicate 67 minutes of their time to community service, symbolising the 67 years the global icon of the fight for justice and human rights dedicated himself to the struggle.

Caledon was a hive of activity on Friday 18 July. The Caledon Museum, in partnership with the Caledon Library and the Town Office of the Theewaterskloof Municipality, collaborated to transform two overlooked and previously rubble-filled spaces in Bergsig into gardens of hope with their “Let’s plant pride” initiative.

Education officer of the Caledon Museum Marlon Sauls said: “This community-driven initiative has left an indelible mark on both the land and the heart of its people. What began as a simple call to action blossomed into a living tapestry of unity, service and shared purpose. These spaces, once waste dumps, are now symbols of community pride, environmental stewardship and collective responsibility.”

The YeBoneers of the @HomeLearners programme as well as members of the South African police also participated in the activities. To the participants’ huge surprise, Western Cape Premier Alan Winde and Theewaterskloof Executive Mayor Lincoln de Bruyn showed up at the planting site. “In a moment of pure joy and symbolic unity all who were there, including the dignitaries, came together to perform the iconic Madiba Shuffle,” said Sauls. “With laughter echoing and feet moving in unison, the simple act of dance captured the heart of the day’s message: togetherness, celebration and the power of collective spirit. This spontaneous, joyful movement reminded everyone present that building a better community is not only about hard work, but also about dancing through the journey together.”

POSITIVE IMPACT ON COMMUNITY

Gerhard Afrika-van Wyk of the Caledon Library said: “I think the two areas that we identified, cleared of rubble and subsequently planted will have a positive impact on the community. When the Premier asked who will give the project sustainability I said the community had to get involved, take pride as well as ownership of these

scommunity gardens. We would like this to be an ongoing project and have already identified other areas where we would like to plant gardens. Anybody that would like to contribute plants is welcome to contact us.”

To Hermanus Times’ question on what his Mandela Day message was, the Premier replied: “Today I am in the Theewaterskloof municipal area, along with Mayor Lincoln de Bruyn, and we’ve now visited our second site, the planting of a community garden. It’s not about today only, which is 67 minutes because it’s the legacy of Nelson Mandela, but rather it’s about 365 days.

“A garden has been planted here, and it’s great to be part of it and to witness it. But I’ve also been to a woman’s shelter, a GBV shelter, which is an unbelievable space that shows caring 365. I think Mandela would share the message that in this case it’s the men that need to step up. We need to step up because it’s also men that let the side down and we need to make sure that we speak up when these things happen, that men step up and that we end this scourge of GBV. I think if Madiba had one message to our country it would definitely be that we need to end this scourge. So let’s use this day to

remember him, but let’s also use it to build our country, make it and the world a much better place.”

The Mayor said: “Today on Mandela Day we honour the legacy of a man who embodied compassion, forgiveness and leadership. Mandela’s selflessness, courage and dedication to justice inspires us to strive for a better world. Let us take action, big or small, to make a positive impact in our communities. As Mandela said, ‘The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.’ Let us rise to the challenge, work together and continue Mandela’s work towards a bright future for all in South Africa.”

Before joining the garden project the YeBoneers visited the Tafelronde Herberg, where they spent meaningful time with elderly residents. Samantha Vent of @HomeLearning said: “The visit was filled with moments of joy, companionship and care.”

ETHOS OF ‘UBUNTU’

Participants joined in various activities such as playing games, offering nail care to the ladies and perhaps most importantly, lending a compassionate ear to the life stories so generously shared by the elders. The Mandela Day initiatives

beautifully captured the ethos of ubuntu, a sense of shared humanity through service, compassion and the building of lasting integrational and community bonds.

Representatives of insurance company AVBOB visited the Vriendelike Voëltjies nursery school, where they not only handed out a cooked meal, four plastic scooters and a new two-plate hotplate, but also undertook the repair of the playground equipment as well as painting the bathrooms. Christa Myburgh of AVBOB said: “Children are children and one needs to walk that extra mile for them.” Cathy Baadjies, owner of Vriendelike Voëltjies, said: “We are so grateful to AVBOB for what it is doing for us. Post-Covid, it is the first organisation to offer us any assistance and we can’t thank it enough.”

The magistrates and prosecutors of the Caledon Court hosted a scrumptious tea party for the Caledon Knitting group, which regularly supplies them with hand-knitted bears. Senior State Prosecutor Magda de Villiers, Judicial Head of Office Juanita Lambert and Regional Court State Prosecutor Elsabé du Toit, thanked the ladies for knitting the bears that bring so much comfort to the vulnerable recipients they deal with. They also handed wool and beautiful long-stemmed roses out.

Court staff handed hearty, warm soup out to members of the public at the Caledon court on Friday morning. Thanks to their knitting and crocheting efforts, members of the Protea Service Centre handed 50 pairs of bed socks and 30 beanies to Caledon Hospital patients.

The Emoji Movement, assisted by AVBOB and Shante Arendse, handed soup and bread out in Donkin Square on Saturday morning.

Raka wines on the roll

“We are thrilled beyond words!”

These were the words of the Raka Wines team following the Top 100 SA wines announcement, where Raka secured three spots under the Tops 100 SA wines for the Raka Pinotage, Raka Quinary and Raka Biography Shiraz.

“We have received even more fantastic news,” said Jorika Visser for Raka wines, “Raka Biography Shiraz took an additional three esteemed awards home – Red Wine of the Year Award: A testament to its exceptional quality; the Grand Cru, Best in Class Awards and the Wine Consistency Award for its impressive consistent Top 100 placements over the past 15 years. This achievement is a testament to our team’s hard work and dedication. Our shiraz

journey began in 1999 with our first vineyards and maiden vintage in 2002. Since then, we have expanded our plantings, now cultivating 11 ha of shiraz, the latest planting in 2022. Each block adds its unique character to our Biography Shiraz. Every vintage adds a new chapter to the Raka legacy.”

She said the story behind the vineyard’s Biography Shiraz is patriarch Piet Dreyer’s 36-year commercial squid-fishing career giving way to a new passion, winemaking.

His transition from fisherman to wine producer inspired the creation of Biography Shiraz, a true story of family and tradition. “We are thrilled and grateful for this recognition,” said Visser. “Cheers to many more milestones to come.”

OCT holds its AGM

The 23rd annual general meeting of The Overberg Community Trust was recently held at the Tsogo Sun Caledon (Caledon Casino Hotel & Spa).

Rev Patty Edwards, chairperson of the trust, gave an overview of the past year as well as the way forward. “The year under review was filled with many great moments, but also challenging ones. Within the challenges we rise and grow.”

She expressed her gratitude to the board, executive and employees of the trust. “The successful running of any organisation needs a team unwavering in its support and commitment, one that we have in the Overberg

Community Trust. Its loyalty and dedication are heartwarming. The team allows the trust to effect change in so many communities and so many households in the Overberg region.”

In his report Connell Balie, general secretary of the trust, gave an overview of the past year, which included the allocation of funds. Toni Linde, representing the auditors, gave a detailed and insightful overview of the trust’s finances and once again commended it for its sound financial practices. He also answered questions from the audience regarding the registration of trustees.

Eunice Theunissen resigned as a trustee and Edwards thanked her for her invaluable input and the role she played over the past 26 years. At the meeting the fol-

lowing office bearers of the trust were elected: Rev Patty Edwards (chairperson), Beulinde Fisher (vice-chairperson), Paul Valentine (treasurer), Connell Balie (general secretary) and Leilani Abrams and Morris Tshabalala elected as additional Exco members. Entrepreneurs, organisations and other beneficiaries received their certificates at the AGM. Kalfiefees vier 25 ikone

Kalfiefees kom

Grit and glory ahead

The 2025 B-well Around the Pot, presented by employment-law service provider Seesa, kicks off a busy period of gravel racing for the South African cycling calendar, and the defending champion, Matt Beers, will once again be on the Swellendam start line on Saturday 2 August.

The two-time national champion stormed to victory in the 100-Miler in 2024 and this year, he and his Toyota Specialised teammates will be racing on the gritty gravel roads of the Overberg along with other participants of the popular B-Well Around the Pot gravel race.

“It’s always exciting to have a rider of the calibre of Matt Beers on the start list,” race founder Rohan Germishuys grinned. “It certainly adds to the prestige! It’s great to welcome Cherise Willeit back too, along with Johan van Zyl.

“The racing at the sharp end is sure to be thrilling, but our focus remains on providing a stellar gravel experience to every competitor.

“From the famous champions to the young riders taking on their longest ever ride in the 25-Miler distance, everyone is treated with the same platteland hospitality.

“The gravel roads are looking good,” Germishuys noted, “and we’ve had a relatively dry winter so far, with slightly below-average rain. We’re holding thumbs for mild temperatures, still conditions and clear skies on race day.

“Difficult weather makes the

racing more memorable, but I think I can speak for everyone when I say we’d prefer a fast rather than unforgettable edition.”

Gravel enthusiasts can now enter the event, choosing between the 100-mile (155 km) race, the 60-mile (102 km) or the 25-mile (48 km). Entries to the 100-, 60- and 25-mile races close on 29 July at midnight.

The start and finish lines for this event will be the Swellendam Showgrounds.

“The 100-miler riders will experience 100 miles (155 km) of gravel road, racing towards the Potberg Mountain. They will then reach Ouplaas to enter into a 30-minute neutral zone before riding the last 60 km back towards Swellendam, where the Gravel King and Queen will be crowned.

The 60-mile (102 km) ride will also reach Ouplaas at 45 km.

The 25-mile (48 km) fun ride will take cyclists through farmlands and gravel roads.

My hart bars van trots. Ek wil net dankie sê aan God vir my seun se talente. Deur Hom is alles moontlik.

2M-GRENS
