FROM THE DESK OF THE EXECUTIVE MAYOR

Welcome to Kouga – Where beauty, excellence and adventure meet

It is with great pleasure that I extend a warm welcome to all visitors to the beautiful Kouga region, proudly recognised as the best municipality in the Eastern Cape and one of the top holiday destinations in South Africa.

Our region continues to shine not only for its breathtaking landscapes but also for its commitment to excellence in governance and service delivery, having achieved a clean audit for the 2023/2024 financial year – a testament to our dedication to transparency, accountability, and providing efficient services to residents and visitors alike.

Kouga is also a leader along the coastline, having proudly earned four prestigious coastal awards for the 2025/2026 season. We celebrate our two Blue Flag beaches, Dolphin Beach and Cape St Francis Beach, recognised for their exceptional standards of cleanliness, safety, and environmental management. In partnership with the JBay Surf Alliance, Kouga was also honoured for its Green Coast sites, highlighting the JBay Supertubes and Paradise Beach coastline as exemplary models of sustainable coastal stewardship.

Beyond these achievements, Kouga offers an exciting and action-packed holiday programme designed to cater

to both residents and visitors of all ages. From the vibrant Opening of the Season celebrations that kick off the summer festivities, to lively markets brimming with local crafts and delicacies, there is always something to spark interest. Music enthusiasts can enjoy shows featuring both local talent and well-known artists, while sports lovers can participate in or cheer on the summer sport series held across the region.

For those seeking a slower pace, families can relax with a picnic in the park, or simply enjoy the tranquil surroundings of our beautiful landscapes.

As we celebrate the season, the municipality remains committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors, combining excellent service delivery with well-managed public spaces.

Whether you are here to explore our pristine beaches, embrace adventure, or simply unwind amidst nature, Kouga promises an unforgettable experience. I warmly invite you to immerse yourself in the hospitality of our community, the richness of our culture, and the natural wonders that make Kouga a destination to remember.

Kouga beaches, Green Coast sites fly the flag for excellence

Kouga Local Municipality has once again cemented its reputation as one of South Africa’s leading coastal destinations, proudly earning four prestigious coastal awards for the 2025/2026 season.

The municipality achieved full Blue Flag Status for Dolphin Beach in Jeffreys Bay and Cape St Francis Beach, reaffirming Kouga’s dedication to maintaining world-class standards of safety, cleanliness, and environmental care.

In addition, Kouga was recognised for its Green Coast sites in partnership with the JBay Surf Alliance, namely the JBay Supertubes and Paradise Beach coastline.

These accolades highlight Kouga’s commitment to balancing tourism development with the protection of its natural coastal ecosystems.

The announcement was made by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) at the official Blue Flag and Green Coast Awards Ceremony held in Port Alfred on 31 October, where 97 coastal sites were honoured for their excellence in sustainable coastal management and tourism.

The Blue Flag Programme, now celebrating 25 years in South Africa, recognises beaches, marinas, and boats that meet international standards of water quality, environmental management, safety, and education.

Kouga Executive Mayor Hattingh Bornman expressed immense pride in the achievement, crediting the dedication of municipal teams and local stakeholders who work tirelessly to maintain Kouga’s coastline.

“This recognition is not only a symbol of pristine beaches and high safety standards, but also a testament to Kouga’s unwavering commitment to sustainable coastal management,” said Bornman.

“We are honoured to once again see Kouga’s beaches flying the Blue Flag, a mark of excellence that attracts

both local and international visitors.”

He further emphasised the importance of collaboration in maintaining these world-class standards.

“These achievements would not be possible without the dedication of our municipal staff, the JBay Surf Alliance, and the passionate residents who continuously advocate for clean, safe and environmentally responsible beaches,” said Bornman. “Together, we are building a future where tourism and environmental care go hand in hand.”

The Green Coast Programme, launched by WESSA to

celebrate natural, less-developed coastal areas, has also grown significantly this year, doubling its network to 15 certified sites across South Africa. Kouga’s inclusion highlights the region’s balanced approach to conservation and tourism, particularly along its more rugged and nature-rich stretches of coastline.

“Our coastlines are the heart of Kouga’s identity,” said Bornman. “They drive our tourism economy, bring communities together, and remind us of the responsibility we share to protect these natural treasures for generations to come.”

JEFFREYS BAY GOLF CLUB:

J-Bay is famous for the perfect wave but has another local gem that offers a different kind of challenge, the Jeffreys Bay Golf Club.

Offering a relaxed atmosphere and a history dating back 80 years, JBGC is a tranquil haven in town. The clubs motto “Where you See the Sea from every Tee” perfectly captures the beauty of the 9-hole course that plays like a 18-hole course with different T-boxes for the back 9.

It also boasts a GRSA accredited Par 3 layout ideal for a quick round before heading to the beach. The clubhouse offers competitive prices on a big selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, while halfway house serves what members describe as the best budget breakfast in town as well as a selection of other menu items.

also home to serious golf competitions. The annual 3-day J-Bay Classic on 18, 19 and 20 December is the highlight on the calender and attracts players from all over. The tournament is open to all golfers with an official handicap.

The double 9 layout and unpredictable easterly breeze over 3 days culminates in one ultimate champion in the mens as well as ladies competition. if you aren’t ready for 3 days play 1 or 2 days to experience the true J-Bay vibe. Looking for a more leisurely round pay R80 for 18 holes every Friday. During the festive season the course hours are 05:30 to 18:00.

The club is open everyday except Christmas Day. Looking ahead to 2026 the club is preparing to celebrate the rich history and hard work of its dedicated members over the past 80 years. The golf club has always been an integral part of the community and town and is home to many other sporting codes and social clubs.

The aim is to ensure a safe environment for all its members and visitors, to encourage the youth to partake in healthy competion, to celebrate the older generation and to make the club a place of pride for the town where everyone is welcome. Whether you want to play a competitive round, or you and the family just want a friendly holiday round dont miss out on visiting JBGC.

36 teams to battle at USN JBay Touchies tournament

The annual USN JBay Touchies, which has been referred to as the best touch rugby tournament in South Africa, will see 36 teams from all over the country battle it out on Jeffreys Bay Main Beach on 26 December from 08:00 to see who the 2025 Kings of the Beach will be.

The tournament began in 2018 and is now in its eighth year with USN as the main sponsor and is now a fixture in JBay’s December calendar.

Christo Botha, event organiser for USN, said that spectators can expect fast and furious touch rugby with non-stop action on the two fields on Main Beach.

He said that there will be three different leagues: a pro league, a women’s league, and a social league for the holiday teams.

“As in previous years, the highlight of the tournament will be the game between the JBay Rugby Club Legends and Kouga Municipality Legends,” said Botha.

“This game will be at 14:00 and live streamed on Facebook page 1Touch.”

He said that there will be lots of freebies for everyone on the beach, making it possible for all the sponsors to be involved in the event.

The Christian Ellis trophy for the referee of the tournament is also once again up for grabs.

Botha said that the event is a celebration of the Kouga communities and is well supported by the local communities.

The current pro league champions, Blues from Jeffreys Bay, will be participating.

In addition, he said that Metrofibre and Kouga Municipality joined hands and sponsored 16 local teams with fully sublimated clothing for the event.

“The touch rugby tournament is a JBay tradition on 26 December, and keeping it alive is very important for USN,” said Botha.

“All finals will be live streamed on Facebook page 1Touch.”

The cost is R150 per team of eight players but is limited to 36 teams.

Botha said that entries open on 1 December and all ages, genders and sizes are welcome to enter a team.

“Only 36 slots are available and it is therefore important for participants to enter immediately to avoid

disappointment,” said Botha.

The prize-giving and afterparty will once again be at Je Vista Social Café, which is another highlight of the event with lots of prizes and cash up for grabs.

Botha has thanked USN, the Kouga Municipality and the 30 other sponsors for their support towards the success of the event.

Fidelity/ADT and Relay EMS will also be present on the day to ensure that everyone is safe at the event.

For more information, contact Christo Botha on 072 238 4463 or email 1Touch@igen.co.za.

JBay Recycling Project:

Ready, set, donate to help change a life this holiday

We know that holidays are meant to be a time of rest and relaxation, but don’t let this stop you from also making a difference in the local community - it’s as quick and easy as one, two, three . . .

Go the extra kilo for the JBay Recycling Project

The JBay Recycling Project is already planning for 2026: specifically their back-to-school stock.

Their donation wishlist includes:

R Uniforms

R Stationery

R Non-perishable food

R Toiletries

R Toys

R Clothing (pre-loved in good condition is great)

Keep in mind: any donation, big or small, is enough to make a difference.

Recycling for rewards: How it usually works

Children aged 3 to 17 are encouraged to collect, sort and deliver recyclable materials (plastic, cardboard, tin or glass) to a community centre one afternoon per week.

Each contribution is weighed and exchanged for points according to a set formula. Volunteers assist participants every step of the way.

Points can be spent immediately in the on-site swop shop or saved for more expensive items.

Whether you are a visitor, new arrival or an old local, it’s a practical way to make a positive impact in the community.

Soap, breakfast cereal, tinned fish, pencils, toy cars and teddies are popular choices.

Stock is subsidised to ensure affordability. For example: a basic school uniform (shoes, pants or tunic, two shirts and two pairs of socks) can be earned for the equivalent of 20kg plastic.

Prices are structured so as to make necessities accessible to even the youngest children.

By November 2025, over their 5,411 Monday visits to the project throughout the year, the children have delivered nearly 70 tonnes of recycling.

Be someone’s champion

Anyone wanting to donate stock is welcome to contact Tanja Lategan on 084 684 6771. To make a financial contribution, visit www.jbayrecyclingproject.org for their banking details.

Their first trading day of 2026 will be on 19 January. New volunteers are always welcome.

JEFFREYS BAY SHELL MUSEUM: Hidden treasure . . .

Toa casual passer-by, the Shell Museum at the c orner of Diaz Road and Drommedaris Street in Jeffreys Bay might appear as just another building housing an array of shells. Step inside, and you are transported into a world that celebrates the beauty and marvels of marine life - a testament to the passion and legacy of its inspiration, Charlotte Kritzinger.

The museum proudly showcases thousands of shells, sourced from across the globe, each meticulously displayed in glass cases.

For the young and curious, magnifying glasses are available to observe even the minutest details of these natural wonders. But there is more to this museum than its striking shell collection; it tells a story of dedication and a deep-seated love for the sea.

Here you will find a collection of local shells with nicknames based on their appearance such as babatoontjies , skurwejantjie , wit knopie , tossel , and visoog

Charlotte Kritzinger

Born in 1905, Charlotte Kritzinger moved from the Langkloof to Jeffreys Bay in 1945, where her coastal proximity ignited a lifelong passion for collecting shells.

Her remarkable collection, which quickly gained national and even global recognition, became a

source of admiration and exchange for enthusiasts worldwide. Though Kritzinger passed in 1971, her will preserved her life’s work, stipulating that the collection be sold together as a single entity.

Thanks to the Kouga Local Municipality’s foresight and stewardship, the collection found its permanent home within the museum in 1988. However, the journey has not been without challenges. Losses and neglect marred the collection’s history until the Humansdorp Museum Association, led by dedicated volunteers like Petro Meyer, stepped in to revive its grandeur.

“It took years to build trust and ensure financial accountability,” Meyer shares. “But now, with the municipality’s steadfast support, we have expanded, secured, and reimagined the museum experience.”

This collaboration has preserved the past and breathed new life into Kritzinger’s vision.

More than shells

Through thoughtful exhibitions, visitors can delve into the mysteries of the ocean, learning about phenomena such as The Red Tide, the grandeur of whales and sharks, and even the culinary and economic significance of chokka, known as the “Gold of the Sea.”

Engaging visuals and multimedia, including footage of surfing champion Mick Fanning’s dramatic shark encounter in Jeffreys Bay, ensure a visit here is both educational and unforgettable.

The museum also serves as a community hub, offering locally crafted mementos and also (seasonal kiosk that) supports the “skulpie-tannies,” which showcases their handcrafted shell items.

Volunteers dedicate their time to keeping the museum vibrant, while others oversee its management and upkeep.

More than just a collection of marine artifacts, the Jeffreys Bay Shell Museum is a story of passion, perseverance, and community spirit.

For those who visit, it promises to leave an indelible mark, inspiring awe for the wonders of the sea and admiration for the dedication that has kept these treasures alive for generations.

More information

The museum is open from Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 15:00 and Saturdays from 09:00 to 14:00. It is closed on public holidays.

Entry fees are R20 for adults and R5 for children.

INFOOD COFFEE ROASTERY:

More than a bean, an experience

Tucked away in Blaaukrans Street, Jeffreys Bay, Infood Coffee Roastery is not just another café. It is a destination for those who see coffee as both craft and culture – a place where passion for the bean blends with craftsmanship, education, and experience.

From the moment you step inside, the aroma of freshly roasted beans and the gleam of specialised coffee equipment set the stage. This is no ordinary stop for a caffeine fix. For true coffee enthusiasts, it is a playground of blends and brewing methods waiting to be explored.

Guided by a Coffee Master

Welcoming visitors is Managing Director Percy Chikwira, a man who has spent over fifteen years perfecting his craft. On this occasion, he prepared a tasting table featuring three distinct blends, each paired with complementary foods. What followed was a dedicated cupping session – the professional ritual of coffee tasting. With the practiced ease of a sommelier, Chikwira guided us through the process: slurping to aerate flavours, identifying subtle notes, and scoring each cup with precision.

The session was a sensory awakening – almost like wine tasting, but infused with the warmth and depth of coffee culture.

Understanding Coffee Through Cupping

The two single-origin and one blend – Local’s Blend, Burundi, and Ethiopia Yirgacheffe – were assessed using the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) Flavour Wheel. Participants rated fragrance, aroma, flavour, aftertaste, acidity, sweetness, and mouthfeel.

“Cupping is about quality assessment,” Chikwira ex-

plained. “We evaluate green beans and production consistency. Coffee must remind you of something – it’s a sensory analysis. Before pairing with food, we first need to understand the coffee’s own characteristics.”

He likened the process to getting to know people: “Part of the experience is to know the coffee first before deciding we don’t like it. Coffee is like people – you must get to know them before forming an opinion.”

Plan your visit

The Taste Journey

Each coffee was prepared with care: immersed in water for four minutes, stirred with circular movements, then tasted with a spoon. Palates were cleansed with water between each sample.

Infood Coffee Roastery is open weekdays from 07:00 – 16:00 and Saturdays from 08:00 – 12:00. They are closed on Sundays. Booking is essential. To reserve, contact 042 293 3651 or send an email to info@ infoodcoffeeroastery.co.za.

Ethiopia Yirgacheffe: A fruity, citrusy profile with lemon, bergamot, jasmine, and a tea-like finish. It paired beautifully with lemon shortbread. Burundi: Rich with dark chocolate tones and subtle spice, enhanced by pairing with chocolate croissants.

Locals’ Blend: Crafted “by the locals for the locals,” offering notes of dark chocolate, nuts, and red fruit such as grapefruit. It paired deliciously with caramel popcorn.

“In the world of coffee, it is important to experience what they are about. They have unique attributes and come from countries that are different. Some may be desirable to you and others not. Taste is subjective. What is important is that you experience what the coffees are about,” Chikwiru said.

And what an experience it was. There is so much more to coffee than the ones we buy in retail stores. It is more than only coffee beans; it is a sensory experience. It might not be everyone’s cup of ‘coffee’, but definitely one that involves all the senses.

Beyond the Cup: Coffee Experiences at Infood Infood Coffee Roastery offers curated experiences that extend the journey beyond cupping:

n Coffee Pairing Experience (R95 per person): Three coffees paired with three foods, exploring how flavours enhance one another.

n Coffee Brewing Workshop (R120 per person): A one-hour session on extraction methods, including a cupping segment and brewing tuition – ideal for home enthusiasts.

n Introduction to Coffee (4 hours, SCA-accredited): A deep dive into coffee botany, cultivation, roasting, and extraction, complete with a theoretical exam—perfect for those passionate about the full coffee value chain.

TNT PEPPERS:

Thornhill’s explosive taste of heat

IT all started, as many good South African stories do, over a cold beer.

On a trip to Jeffreys Bay, a casual supply run turned into an unexpected partnership when a greenhouse grower from Thornhill met Garron Nieuwenhuis, a chilli enthusiast with an unmatched passion for peppers. One conversation later, the idea was born: why not combine a green thumb with fiery ambition?

What began as plans for organic vegetables quickly transformed into something far more daring – a 2 200 square metre greenhouse bursting with rare and exotic hot peppers. Today, that chance meeting between Mark Fotheringham and Nieuwenhuis has grown into TNT Peppers, a farm with a name that says it all: explosive flavour and heat in every bite.

Thornhill’s secret ingredient

Thornhill may seem like a quiet village, but its clean air and abundant sunshine make it the perfect home for these fiery plants. “The climate produces peppers that are not only strong and healthy, but also packed with unique flavours that can hold their own against some of the most famous chillies in the world,” Fotheringham said.

A world of peppers under one roof

Step inside TNT Peppers’ greenhouse and you’ll find a global collection of heat. From medium-heat chillies to some of the hottest varieties on the planet, the farm grows both local crossbreeds unique to South Africa and rare international strains adapted to local soil.

Among the most notorious are the 7 Pot Primo, Primotalli Gold, and Primotalli Red.

“Reactions range from nervous laughter to full-blown tears – some people manage a brave face, while others quickly discover they’ve underestimated the firepower.”

More than just a pepper farm

But TNT Peppers isn’t only about fresh pods. They’re expanding into new products like fermentation kits for home sauce makers, complete with recipes and tools to help chilli lovers create their own fiery masterpieces. “Our big plan is to launch an annual chili festival at the peak of season –a week-long ‘heatwave’ across Thornhill where local restaurants and cafés create special chilli-inspired dishes that deliver real pain and pleasure in equal measure.”

Later this year, TNT Peppers will take its fiery flavours overseas, sending a special edition chilli powder to China as part of

Kouga Local Municipality’s expo – proudly flying the flag for African-grown peppers on the international stage.

Stories that burn bright

Working with hot peppers isn’t just farming for TNT Peppers – it’s about discovery, storytelling, and connection.

“Every pepper has its own history, flavour profile, and burn,” Fortheringham said.

He said one of his favourite memories was when a group of men built like bodybuilders, stopped by their tasting table.

“They began challenging each other, going hotter and hotter, determined to prove who was toughest. At first, they looked unshakable, but within minutes, our stand had three grown men in tears. The sight was something straight out of a movie – a reminder that TNT peppers have a way of humbling even the toughest challengers.”

Adding flavour to the community

Small farms like TNT Peppers bring more than produce – they add authenticity, creativity, and local pride to Thornhill’s food and tourism scene. By supplying unique products to restaurants, delis, and home cooks, the farm gives visitors a taste they can’t find anywhere else.

Why should this be on your to-do list

A visit to TNT Peppers isn’t just about buying chillies – it’s about experiencing heat, flavour, and fun. Whether you’re chasing a new culinary adventure, ready to take on a chilli challenge, or just curious to discover peppers you’ve never seen before, TNT Peppers promises something unforgettable.

And with new varieties, fermentation kits, and that long-awaited chilli festival on the horizon, Thornhill’s hottest attraction is only getting hotter.

Be water wise this festive season

Keep these tips from the NSRI in mind this summer season where you and the family head to the beach . . .

In case of emergency, dial on your cellphone. For other emergency numbers, turn to page 14 .

Lifeguard, oh lifeguard . . .

Only swim at beaches where and when lifeguards are on duty. Lifeguards will be on duty at selected beaches between 10:00 and 18:00 on weekends and weekdays during summer school holidays.

Swim between the red and yellow flags. This is where the lifeguards are on duty.

Don’t drink (alcohol) and swim!

Use the buddy system. Never swim alone. mm

Don’t attempt a rescue yourself. If you see someone in difficulty, alert a lifeguard at once. If possible, throw something that floats to the person. Then call the emergency number 112 from your cellphone.

Constant vigilance!

Watch children when they are in or near water. Do not be distracted by your cellphone or social media.

How to escape a rip current:

S Don’t panic and don’t fight the current

S Swim parallel to the shore

S Use the waves to help get you back to the beach

S Never swim into a rip to help somebody

S Rather throw them something that floats

S Call for help

Gallop, trot or stroll:

Adventure wrapped in hooves and horizons

There are some experiences you know you will never forget – for me, one of them was exploring the coastal reserve at Oyster Bay Lodge from horseback. Sure, they offer trotting or even a good gallop for the adventurous, but since it was my colleague’s first time on a horse (and my own confidence levels were . . . let’s just say “limited”), we decided to keep things casual. A slow, gentle walk along a private beach next to the rolling waves of the Indian Ocean turned out to be exactly what we needed. Trotting will just have to wait for next time.

Leaving the R330 behind, we turned onto a gravel road –a path less travelled by many, where dust dances in the sunlight and the horizon hints at untold adventures.

Beside me, Carla Schoeman’s (my colleague) raised eyebrow and feint frown seemed to question both my driving prowess and the cheeky numbers flashing on the speedometer – but honestly, isn’t a little thrill all part of the experience?

And then, as if nature planned a great reveal, the gate of Oyster Bay Lodge appeared before us, framed by dune fynbos rich with threatened species like buchu and ericas. Nestled between St Francis Bay and the border of the Tsitsikamma coast, this lodge is a nature lover’s paradise.

Warm welcomes and whinnies

At the entrance, Lodge Manager Ettienne van der Merwe welcomed us with a friendly smile. The air was alive with soft horse whinnies, a lone buck grazing peacefully nearby, and mischievous monkeys leaping through the trees.

Our eyes wandered to the horses, and naturally, a few questions about them sprang to mind. Most importantly (for me): what is the maximum weight they can carry? The answer – 100kg. I briefly considered removing my earrings or shoes, just to be safe.

The lodge is home to 10 horses, each surprisingly named after drinks – a coincidence, we were told. Calm and well-trained, these horses are even suitable for children or complete beginners, with a maximum of eight guests allowed per ride.

Our guide for the day, Lindré Swartz, a knowledgeable horseman who has been with the lodge for four years, introduced us to our horses: Frangelico and Sambuca. Yes, knowing their names mattered. As he explained, “Your horse should know who you are, too.”

Saddle up

After a quick riding lesson – lean forward uphill, lean back downhill, pull the reins gently to stop, stay calm (horses can sense nerves), and above all, enjoy it – we were ready to ride.

Equipped with helmets, boots with a small heel (thank you Carla and Google), and my trusty camera, we mounted with a little help and passed through the wooden gate. Settling into a gentle pace, the horses’ steady walk perfectly matched our experience level (or rather, the lack thereof). The ride followed a circular route of about 1 hour to 1.5 hours (depending on your experience level).

Through the fynbos and down to the sea

We followed a sandy track winding through the dunes, surrounded by coastal fynbos teeming with birdlife, including the striking African Black Oystercatcher. Our guide shared fascinating insights about the area: Oyster Bay boasts sprawling sand dunes, river deltas, lagoons, wetlands, and untouched beaches. Hiking trails, sandboarding, birdwatching, and mountain biking are

just a few of the activities awaiting visitors – no wonder it was named one of the fastest-growing holiday destinations last December.

And then, the sea appeared, vast and breathtaking. With the sea now fully in view, we edged closer to the shoreline, ready to continue our ride.

Riding beside the waves

On the wide stretch of private beach, our horses’ hooves sank softly into the sand as the waves lapped in gentle rhythm against the shoreline. The salty wind caressed our skin as the ocean stretched endlessly before us.

In the distance, a container ship reminded us of modern life, though our guide noted that even today, items from containers lost in September 2024 still wash up on this coastline.

Sadly, no dolphins graced us with their presence – but the scenery more than made up for it.

Up the dunes to panoramic views

Turning inland, we ventured back into the dunes.

Wildlife remained elusive this time, but the thrill of anticipation made the journey all the more engaging.

We climbed a steep dune, hooves sinking yet steady, until the trail opened onto a breathtaking lookout. From this vantage point, the ocean stretched out like a living painting. We dismounted, taking a few moments to simply inhale the view.

Eventually, it was time to return, which meant mounting the horses once again. Using a wooden bench and the steady guidance of our guide, I gathered all my strength in my desk-bound legs and gave it a go. I nearly toppled to the other side, saved only by our guide’s quick reflexes. Carla, on the other hand, mounted with such ease that I could not help but feel a little foolish.

Once back in the saddle, we crossed a wooden bridge, passing the remnants of the lodge’s spa, tragically destroyed by fire the previous year.

Back at the stables, we rewarded our four-legged companions with slices of crisp apple. But a word of caution: do not linger too long with the bowl of apples, as patience is not exactly their strong suit. Just ask Carla.

A ride to remember

Whether you are a first-time rider or a seasoned equestrian, the sweeping beaches, fynbos-covered dunes, and rhythmic sound of hooves on sand create memories that linger long after the ride is over.

As for me? Next time, I might just gather the courage to try that trot.

Swinging through the Tsitsikamma:

A canopy adventure I will never forget

The morning air was crisp, the birds were chirping like they’d had one too many espressos, and there I was – about to throw myself off a perfectly good platform, willingly.

The Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour in Stormsriver Village promised an experience where adventure meets awe among ancient trees, and the exhilaration of the forest canopy surrounded every step.

Before the adventure could begin, there was a buzz of excitement in the air – a mix of nervous laughter and eager anticipation. The forest loomed ahead, alive with the chatter of birds and the soft rustle of leaves in the breeze. It was impossible not to feel a little thrill knowing that, soon, I would be gliding high above that very canopy, stepping (or rather, zipping) far outside my comfort zone and straight into the heart of nature.

After meeting our friendly guides, we settled in for a safety briefing – thorough and reassuring.

Then came the “kitting up,” which felt part superhero, part mountain climber. We were strapped into full-body harnesses, fitted with helmets and pulleys, and given the all-important padded glove for braking. “Barely any pressure,” they said. I made a mental note to test that theory very carefully.

Once we were geared up, we climbed aboard a safari-style truck that bounced us into the lush Tsitsikamma indigenous forest. The scent of damp earth, moss, and wild ferns filled the air – the kind of

smell that makes you instantly breathe a little deeper.

Ten platforms awaited us, the lon gest slide stretching an exhilarating 100 metres between towering Outeniqua Yellowwoods, some over 700 years old. One of them, affectionately called Uncle Sam, stood tall and wise like a gentle gi ant watching over us.

And then — the first zip line.

My stomach did a little somersault as I pushed off the platform. Suddenly, I was flying. The wind whipped past my face, rustling my hair and carrying with it the scent of pine and wild ferns. The forest stretched endlessly beneath me, sun light dancing on leaves, shadows playing across the tree trunks.

Each platform felt like stepping into a new world, and the gentle hum of the steel cable beneath my hands was oddly comforting.

My laughter mingled with the calls of the Knysna loeries, and for a moment, it felt like the forest itself was cheering me on.

Every glide brought a rush of adrena line, a sense of freedom, and the pure joy of being suspended in a living, breathing cathedral of trees.

All too soon, our three-hour adventure came to an end.

The final test? A steep 600-metre walk back to the truck — short, yes, but in full gear and slightly wobbly legs, it felt like a workout. My thighs may have com plained, but my heart was soaring.

Would I do it again? Absolutely. Be cause in Tsitsikamma, you do not just see the forest — you fly through it.

A relaxing escape in the heart of Patensie

Tucked away in the picturesque Gamtoos Valley, Gamtoos B&B in Patensie is a hidden gem where tranquility, comfort, and warm hospitality meet.

From the moment you arrive, you are embraced by a sense of calm and welcome, making it the perfect base to explore the valley’s natural beauty, indulge in local flavours, and simply unwind in a home-away-from-home atmosphere.

If you’re looking for a hidden gem where calm, charm, and character collide, Gamtoos B&B in the heart of Patensie is the perfect escape.

From the moment we arrived, it felt like stepping into a serene haven, a place where the valley’s natural beauty meets warm hospitality and thoughtful personal touches. Our host, Rochelle, greeted us warmly and gave us a guided tour of the property, presenting a packet of homemade rusks as a welcome treat. Such personal touches set the tone for our stay – cozy, thoughtful, and inviting.

The property itself is a delight: a large patio with a braai and plunge pool provides the perfect spot to socialise, unwind, or simply relax. Weather permitting, breakfast can be enjoyed in the airy dining room or on the huge covered balcony, where spectacular views of the valley and surrounding mountains stretch as far as the

eye can see.

Gamtoos B&B has four uniquely decorated units; each infused with the flair of local creative, Hildie du Preez. We stayed in the spacious air-conditioned family room, featuring a double bed, two single beds, a full bathroom, a comfortable lounge area, and a well-equipped kitchenette. Our private deck and covered parking added an extra layer of convenience and privacy.

After unpacking, we wandered through the neighbourhood, where friendly dogs greeted us with cheerful barks and wagging tails.

Suurvelder Restaurant

Dinner at the nearby Suurvelder Restaurant was an absolute treat. Our waiter, the ever-charismatic Moses, recommended the spare ribs – tender, juicy, and possibly the best I have ever tasted. The restaurant offers something for everyone, from burgers and pizzas to seafood, a kids’ menu, a play area and a pool table, with seating indoors or out.

Breakfast at the Suurvelder Restaurant the next morning was just as memorable. Moses insisted we try their famous Cambria shooter. We still do not know exactly what is in it, but its intriguing orange-infused flavour lingered in the most delightful way – a quirky and unforgettable start to the day.

Rochelle also packed us an amazing picnic basket, which we enjoyed later at Kouga Dam, taking in the calm waters and noting the dropping levels — a reminder of the importance of water conservation.

Time to explore

We set off on a slow drive toward the Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve. The route revealed a landscape untouched and pristine: a quiet stream invited us to dip our feet in its cool water, while curious baboons observed us from the rocks nearby, and lizards basked lazily in the sun.

The valley felt alive yet undisturbed, with the wind dancing through the trees and carrying the faint scent of the surrounding orange trees.

After soaking in the peaceful atmosphere, we set off to the Kouga Dam where we enjoyed a leisurely picnic, a serene spot that holds significance not only for Patensie but for the wider Kouga region.

Nestled under the shade of towering trees, the gentle breeze rustled the leaves while birds sang in a joyful chorus, creating a soundtrack of pure tranquility. The dam’s grounds are thoughtfully equipped with braai facilities and ablution blocks, making it perfect for a relaxing day with family or friends. Enjoying the calm waters mirrored by the mountains, it was easy to feel a connection to the region’s history — a place

where nature, culture, and community have long intertwined. The experience felt timeless, a pause in the rhythm of modern life that allows one to appreciate the valley’s beauty and heritage.

Back ‘home’

After a day immersed in the timeless beauty and history of the Kouga Dam, we returned to Gamtoos B&B, where the comfort of our home-away-from-home awaited us.

Evenings at Gamtoos B&B are magical. We braaied on our deck, soaking in the views of the valley and mountains, and the next morning enjoyed an early coffee as neighbourhood children rode past on their bicycles just after 06:00.

What makes Gamtoos B&B truly special, however, is not just the comfort or the scenery – it is the people. Warm, friendly, and welcoming, from Rochelle to the neighbours we met, everyone greets you with a smile, making you feel instantly at home.

Step into the magical world of Fairyland

What began as a quiet daydream beneath an ancient, sun-dappled tree has grown into a kaleidoscopic fairy wonderland, inviting tiny-winged friends and their kindred spirits from near and far. With the spark of her imagination and the magic touch of her team, Hildie du Preez of Patensie has woven together nature, art, and fantasy to create a fairy kingdom where imagination dances, creativity blooms, and whispers of enchantment linger in every corner. So, when you next wander through Patensie, follow the soft flutter of fairy wings and step into Fairyland – a pace where dreams take root, sprout wings, and soar.

On a golden afternoon in Patensie, when the air shimmered with the sweet perfume of citrus orchards and sunlight spilled over the Du Preez family farm, home to Gamtoos Nursery, the world seemed to hold its breath.

Beneath the wide, whispering branches of an ancient tree, Hildie du Preez, a creative soul with a heart full of wonder, sat quietly, lost in thought. She let the gentle warmth of the sun and the soft rustle of leaves carry her into a daydream, imagining worlds filled with magic and possibility.

And then, as if summoned by her imagination itself, a tiny, twinkling fairy appeared, fluttering on delicate wings of light. She leaned close and whispered a secret into Hildie’s ear: “Create a world of wonder, where magic and imagination come alive.”

In that instant, the spark of Fairyland was ignited, and a dream that had been quietly stirring in Hildie’s heart began to grow, ready to bloom into a world of enchantment, color, and delight.

From farm corner to fairy kingdom

With Hildie’s boundless imagination and the inventive touch of her team, a humble corner of the farm along the R331, as you enter Patensie, transformed into Fairyland – a dazzling, kaleidoscopic

kingdom alive with colour, whimsy, and sparkling magic. Here, fairies flit and twirl among the flowers, frogs croon cheerful tunes, dwarves peek playfully from behind toadstools, and butterflies twirl through the air like living confetti.

Tiny, hand-painted homes now dot the landscape, each lovingly crafted for the fairy inhabitants who call this magical kingdom home. A sparkling water well glimmers in the sunlight, while vibrant plants sway gently as if waving at visitors. Every corner tells a story, every detail sparks the imagination, and every step brings a new surprise.

A

world built from creativity and sustainability

Fairyland is as much a celebration of creativity as it is of sustainability.

Recycled treasures from the farm have been

transformed into miniature marvels. Old bottles now glimmer as flowers, wooden scraps have become tiny, painted mushrooms, and discarded tin cans have been magically repurposed into whimsical homes for fairy folk. Nature, imagination, and ingenuity intertwine at every turn, inviting visitors to explore, discover, and wonder.

A playground for imagination

Fairyland is not just a feast for the eyes – it is a magical playground for creativity.

Children are invited to wander, explore, and leave their own spark of magic in every corner. They can paint stones, design miniature dwellings, or craft tiny friends for the fairies, letting their imaginations soar.

While the little ones explore under careful supervision, mom and dad can relax and enjoy something delicious to eat or drink at the on-site restaurant, Suurlvelder, making the visit a delightful experience for the whole family.

Visit and experience the magic

For just R20 entry per person, families and children can immerse themselves in this enchanting world.

Fairyland also features a delightful little shop, offering fairy kits, paints, and miniature treasures for visitors to take home, allowing the magic to continue far beyond the farm.

So, dust off your wings, follow the whispers of the fairies, and step into Fairyland – a world where imagination dances, creativity blooms, and magic is alive in every leaf, every flower, and every hidden corner.

EXPERIENCE THIS IN JEFFREYS BAY:

Rum with a twist

Tucked away on Je rey Street in the heart of Je reys Bay, Ferreira Post Distillery is a hidden gem that has quickly captured the imagination of locals and visitors alike.

It is more than just a distillery – it is a destination where every sense is engaged, from the sweet, heady scent of sugar cane to the rich, warming aroma of molasses slowly melding in the barrels.

Step inside, and you are invited to embark on a journey through time and taste, discovering a spirit that masterfully blends tradition, innovation, and the unique character of the region. Each sip tells a story, not only of craftsmanship and patience, but also of the rich heritage that the historic Ferreira’s Post farm brings to life.

A Chartered Accountant turned rum maker

Owner Anton Ferreira, once a chartered accountant, swapped spreadsheets for stills after retirement and has been pouring his passion into rum making since September 2021. What began as a retirement project has quickly grown into one of Kouga’s must-visit attractions, proving that it is never too late to reinvent yourself.

How boutique rum is made – the simple version

Making rum may sound like an elaborate process, but in layman’s terms, it all starts with sugar cane.

By adding molasses to the base of sugar cane, the flavour profile of the rum becomes deeper, richer, and more complex. The mixture is then carefully fermented before

moving on to distillation.

At Ferreira Post Distillery, this is done using state-of-the-art bubble plate reflux columns, which ensure a smooth, refined finish that sets their boutique rum apart.

favourites when it is blended with mixers.

Once distilled, the rum is either infused with a variety of flavours or set aside to mature. Each batch takes roughly two weeks to produce, making every bottle a genuine labour of love and attention to detail.

Ferreira himself insists that rum is at its best when enjoyed playfully – whether with Coke, Appletiser, ginger beer, or even Sprite.

Flavours to surprise and delight

Stored in old whisky casks, the rum slowly absorbs new layers of character, taking on subtle whisky-like notes that intrigue the palate. The oldest batch has been resting for four years, a testament to patience and craftsmanship that results in a spirit both velvety and layered – unlike anything most visitors have tasted before.

A Taste Adventure

At Ferreira Post Distillery, visitors are invited to do more than simply taste rum – they are encouraged to immerse themselves in the full experience. Here, you can watch the craft unfold up close, breathe in the evolving aromas at di erent stages of the process, and, of course, savour the finished product.

The tastings are designed to be fun, interactive, and eye-opening, o ering a chance to explore rum in more ways than one. Guests sample it neat and mixed, learning how the spirit shifts and transforms depending on the flavours it is paired with. Some enjoy the clean, smooth character served on the rocks, while others discover new

Part of the fun is Ferreira’s restless curiosity. With around 20 flavours – from classics like Dark, Gold, and White Rum to playful creations like Watermelon, Vanilla, Berry, and Cherry – there’s something for every palate.

The exotic Pina Colada is a favourite, while the indulgent Rumarula (think cookies-and-cream liqueur) is perfect for those with a sweet tooth. And when boredom strikes, Ferreira simply dreams up a new flavour, keeping locals and visitors guessing what might be next.

A Story in Every Sip

Named after the historic Ferreira’s Post farm, the distillery is as much about storytelling as it is about spirits. Each bottle embodies the warmth of the African sun, the charm of Je reys Bay, and Ferreira’s unyielding passion for craftsmanship. Whether you’re a seasoned rum lover or a curious first-timer, this is an experience not to be missed.

From kitchen chaos to citrus magic: Wilma’s sweet journey

Patensie resident Wilma Ferreira’s journey started more than three decades ago, yet it was not until recently that the fruits of her labour would gain international recognition. This year, her products featured at the China International Import Expo, thanks to the Kouga Local Municipality’s Local Economic Development and Tourism section, which champions local gems like hers.

What began as a simple kitchen lesson more than 30 years ago has recently blossomed into a story of faith, perseverance, and flavour that now stretches far beyond the lush orchards of Patensie.

Today, it is a tale that celebrates heritage while embracing fresh beginnings, carried in every bottle of Wilma Ferreira’s handcrafted citrus creations. Her preserve-making journey traces back to her newlywed days with Deon, when her late grandmother, Ouma Lomie, came for a visit.

“She showed me how to make marmalade,” Wilma recalls warmly. “I had actually forgotten that I had written down her recipe – until recently, when I was paging through an old recipe book and found the recipe I had written down back then.

Except for one fruit, my Patensie Citrus Marmalade is the same combination of fruit that she used.”

From flops to favourite Preserve making came with lots of chal-

lenges. “There were many attempts and even more flops . . . but my love for working with fruit keeps me motivated to experiment and try new things,” she admits with a laugh. “My family and friends are my taste testers, and the community has been amazing.”

Her husband, Deon, was, and still is, a constant source of encouragement. “He said that if I ever thought of selling preserves, I must never underestimate the value of consistent quality and good packaging.”

Once perfected, her brand became more than flavour – it carried meaning.

“I attended a church seminar about new beginnings,” Wilma reflects. “The word Kainos was used – it means new, fresh, and of high quality in Greek. From that moment, I knew I wanted my products to embody the same qualities.”

That newfound inspiration gave Wilma the confidence to return to her kitchen with purpose, ready to refine her craft and learn from those around her. Her skills were

honed less in research and recipe books and more around kitchen tables.

“Honestly, I learned everything from people,” she says. “My grandmother, the VLV tannies and older women in the community. Later a friend connected me with a lady in Stellenbosch who taught me the secrets of making Lemon Cordial.”

The turning point

“I tried selling a few bottles, but it wasn’t the right time,” Wilma remembers.

Everything changed two years ago when one of her daughters needed funds for an outreach trip to India. “I made preserves to help her raise the necessary funds, and that’s when Tertia Geyer from Beesland bought a jar. Later she asked if she could stock my products in their deli. That’s when things really started moving,” Wilma says.

A recipe book of possibilities

Wilma’s creations include Patensie Citrus Marmalade, Lime Marmalade, Naartjie Jam infused with Rooibos, Lemon Curd,

and refreshing Lemon, Lime, and Grapefruit Cordials.

“Every year I try something new,” she says with a smile. “Next year I want to make Orange Peel Rolls.”

Her jams and cordials are stocked at Beesland, Harvest Moon Deli, and Crossways Market. Wilma also often teaches others the art of marmalade-making –though she keeps her recipes to herself. From a forgotten recipe scribbled in an old recipe book to bottles now heading for international showcases, Wilma’s story proves that passion, perseverance, and faith can transform simple fruit into citrus magic. And with every jar, she offers not just preserves – but joy.
