CHIMONE Windvogel (32) was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment after pleading guilty at the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court recently to her involvement in the plot to kill Kouga councillor Jaques Alexander
As previously reported, Alexander was shot in broad daylight outside the Kouga Municipality Main Building in Da Gama Road, Jeffreys Bay, in February 2024
As he was parking his vehicle on the street, a vehicle passed him
Two suspects got out of the vehicle and fired shots at him
Alexander was rushed to hospital and survived the attack
According to court documents, Windvogel became involved in the case in January this year when she shared information about Alexander’s home security system with Andy Davids, one of the accused in Alexander’s attempted murder case
In her guilty plea agreement, she said, “I admit that Andy asked me about the security setup of the complainant’s (Alexander) premises He asked me about his home cameras and how they were situated, and I gave him that information ”
According to the court documents, Windvogel knew that the idea was to shoot the security guards to kill Alexander
Despite being aware of the intent to kill, she shared Alexander’s security information
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, confirmed that Windvogel was convicted on one charge of conspiracy to commit murder, and she has been sentenced to 15 years’ direct imprisonment

THE Kouga region has welcomed its first registered special needs school, with Metanoia Elim School, an independent and private school, opening its doors in Humansdorp to learners with specialised educational needs
Darné Jonker, campus owner and director, said that Metanoia Elim School is the first private special needs school in the Kouga region that has been registered with the Department of Education
She said that while there are many schools in Kouga, there is a growing need for registered special needs schools to cater for those who require alternative schooling options
The Metanoia organisation was founded by Dr Lyn Thijsse, an Educational Psychologist from the United Kingdom, who believes that “at the core of all decisions made within Metanoia Schools are each child’s needs and heart, their place within their family and community, and the right to an education that is meaningful to them”
The journey of Metanoia Schools in the Eastern Cape began with Yolande Strydom, a mother of two special-needs children who identified the need for quality, meaningful education for learners with neurodevelopmental disorders and learning barriers, unable to access mainstream education

The first campus for the Eastern Cape was established in Gqeberha in 2019 and has since expanded alongside the communities’ needs in both the Eastern and Western Cape

The newest campus opened in Humansdorp, Kouga
The school operates through a comprehensive three-phase development strategy
Phase One focuses on the Pre-Primary and Primary School for learners aged four years and above
This phase provides specialised support within small classroom settings of fewer than eight learners, offering both Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement adapted for learners with Special Educational Needs (CAPS SEN) and Differentiated Curriculum for Special Needs Pupils South Africa (DCAPS), which provides learners with more time to reach their academic milestones
“We have small classrooms, and we will not compromise on our classroom sizes," said Jonker
“This allows us to stay true to the Metanoia model with an individualised approach that practices target-specific goals in tailored environments for learning, allowing each child a chance to reach their full potential ”
For learners aged 14 and above phase two
needed to lead completely fulfilled lives It is important for us to have a long-term plan and a future for our learners, one that empowers them to contribute positively to their community and hold a place in our society as adults,” said Jonker
She further said that each child has an individual curriculum which caters for their needs and learning style
Jonker said that Metanoia Schools also design their own books and resources, which are specifically tailored to each child's needs
Alongside the academic curriculum, the school has also implemented an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) programme which introduces tools and strategies to help support children with developmental delays, disabilities or anyone in need of alternative methods to express themselves
According to Jonker, one of the methods includes sign language, ensuring that communication is accessible because all children deserve to be heard
The school currently serves 24 learners regis-
tered for 2026 from across the region, including learners from Patensie, Jeffreys Bay, Humansdorp, and St Francis Bay
Jonker said that the idea to establish Metanoia in the Kouga area to cater for growing demand gained momentum after a parent from Jeffreys Bay contacted the organisation and helped open a branch in the region
Centre manager and campus director, Cindy Boshoff, who has personal experience as a mother with an autistic son, understands the challenges families face
She said that her passion for the school is a result of seeing “first-hand” the difference the school has made since her son started at the school
“Everything changes for a parent when their child is first diagnosed with special needs, and it can be a big shock for many parents Sadly, there is not a lot of support for special needs children in the Eastern Cape, and some kids experience a lot of rejection trying to find the right school,” said Boshoff
“It is also great to see how the Metanoia Schools have grown and developed with the learners ”
As the school continues to settle in Kouga, Jonker said that they seek corporate partnerships to support their mission through the expansion of the school’s skills facilities, inviting learners to visit local industries and creating opportunities for children to learn about the working world aligned with their school of skills courses
“Together, we can create an inclusive community that our children deserve,” said Jonker Given the reality that many parents face with children unable to cope in mainstream school environments, resulting in many parents homeschooling their children, Metanoia Elim School offers hope
“There is a school where competence is assumed, potential is recognised, and every child is given the chance to truly thrive,” said Jonker

COMMUNITY spirit is flourishing in Jeffreys Bay through an initiative that combines neighbourhood street braais with acts of kindness, bringing residents together while fulfilling dreams and helping those less fortunate during the festive season
Local resident, Soria Swart, said that in a world that often feels rushed, disconnected, and digital, a heartwarming tradition has begun to spread through Jeffreys Bay, one that takes the community right back to the “golden days” of their childhood
The annual Street Braai offers residents an opportunity to gather around a fire at the corner of various streets throughout Jeffreys Bay, with each household bringing along tables, chairs, firewood and proudly prepared dishes
“Every family contributes something: warm home-baked bread, fresh salads, sweet puddings, cherished family recipes, and bags of wood to keep the fires glowing long into the evening,” said Swart
The event, which took place on 5 and 6 December, is quickly becoming one of the most meaningful new community trends in town
Swart said that for many residents, these gatherings awaken memories of a time when neighbours were not strangers
“The Street Braai reminds us of a time when, if a new family moved in, the entire street would arrive with a fresh pot of coffee, home-baked cookies, and a warm welcome When curtains were hung together, recipes were exchanged freely, and children played in the street until the moon rose high When we visited each others homes in our pyjamas, feeling safe, loved, and part of something greater than ourselves,” said Swart
She added that the initiative addresses a growing need for community connection
Swart said that since COVID-19, most people have lived for themselves and in isolation, with many not even knowing who their neighbours are Thankfully, through the Street Braai initiative, things are changing in her community, with people eager to learn more about each other and support one another
“There is something almost overwhelming in the simplicity and sincerity of the Street Braai
As people walk up one by one with their offerings, laughter fills the air long before the first chop hits the grill Children ride their bikes between the neighbours, dogs trot around hap-

pily, and adults settle into long, easy conversations with people they may only have waved at in passing throughout the year,” said Swart
“In those moments, something extraordinary happens There is no politics, no religion, no dividing lines, only unity, peace, and belonging ”
Adding to the uniqueness of the Street Braai event, Swart said that each year they aim to assist with a special project or request from the underprivileged or senior citizens in the community
This year, on 5 December at the corner of Spekboom Street and Tecoma Street, Tersia Strydom, an 80-year-old resident, ticked off an exciting bucket list item
Swart said that Pastor Corrie Venter arranged for a local group of Harley Davidson bikers to surprise Strydom with a drive around the community, a surprise she had been looking forward to all her life
“She obviously could not ride the motorcycle herself, but the bikers lifted her onto a motorcycle and drove around the block with her It was a big surprise for her,” said Swart
To keep the Street Braai tradition alive, she also organised her own community braai the following day on the corner of Palm Crescent and Red Currant Road
Reflecting on how community relationships have changed over time, Swart said that the Street Braai continues to spread throughout Jeffreys Bay, with many more communities interested in participating
“Things are changing in our community and being neighbourly is becoming common practice again,” said Swart
She has also encouraged others to get involved and pay it forward by doing something good for the less fortunate

JEFFREYS Bay Angling Club
(JBAC) achieved a historic milestone when five of their anglers represented South Africa against Namibia in the 2025 South African Shore Angling Association Gala Tournament from 1 to 4 December in Jeffreys Bay
The tournament, hosted by the South African Shore Angling Association (SASAA), saw JBAC anglers excel across multiple divisions, with two members claiming champion titles
De Wet Stroebel dominated the u/16 division, taking first position and earning his first Protea cap
In the Senior division, Duvan van Breda secured the Senior
Champion title with a first-place finish
Frans-Johan Engelbrecht represented the club in the u/21 category, finishing 13th and also earning his first Protea cap
The Masters Division saw Greg Sutherland achieve third place, while Gerhard Guse finished 13th
Corrie Groenewald served as team manager
Callie Viljoen, secretary of JBAC, said that, from his knowledge, this is the first time any angling club in South Africa has been represented in the u/16, u/21, Senior and Masters divisions in an international tournament
“The tournament was conducted in excellent spirit, with abundant fish catches over the three days,” said Viljoen
He further said that the Namibian team added several new species to their bucket lists, and strong friendships were forged between the competing nations
“Great friendships were made, and Namibia has already extended an invitation to us to fish the 2026 Gala in Henties Bay,” said Viljoen
Both Guse and van Breda, who hold multiple Protea caps, previously participated in the 2024 Gala tournament hosted by Namibia
Meanwhile, two new Protea caps have been awarded to Stroebel and Engelbrecht
“We are super proud of the boys and their achievements,” said Viljoen

To further add to the excitement, six JBAC members also officiated as weight marshals during the tournament, which included Conrad Van Vuuren, Kevin Vermeu-
