Verskeie redes vir besmetting vermoed

Kommer

oor E. coli

Wanneer goeie reën oor die Goudveld uitsak, kry dié asemrowende waterval by The Swallows in Virginia nuwe lewe. Tussen 1 en 7 April het sowat 113mm reën oor dié gebied geval, en Blaawdrift en die Sandrivier vloei sterk. Teen Sondag was die Vaaldam se watervlak 109% en Bloemhofdam was 107%. Vloedwaarskuwings

State of police resources a concern

The roadworthiness and availability of police vehicles in general in the Goldfields, but more so in remote areas like Odendaalsrus, Allanridge, Nyakallong and Bultfontein, is cause for great concern and is hampering police procedures, investigations, and even court procedures.

Public complaints are mounting that there are not enough police vehicles and police vehicles are not road worthy, licence discs in some instances have expired, the tyre treads have worn through, the wheel bearings and wheel alignment on the vehicles are not up to standard, and the brakes on many of the vehicles do not work.

One police officer described this situation as akin to driving in a deathtrap.

Often when police officials have to transport prisoners to court, there are no available vehicles, or when they need to go to a crime scene or take witness statements, they are stranded, and the victims themselves must find their way to the police station.

Vista is aware of an incident that happened on Monday, 7 April, when a young woman and her six-year-old son were the victims of a robbery. The distraught woman was informed that there were no vehicles available and that she might have to wait up to three hours for assistance.

She was told to go the police station to lay a charge.

Sgt Palesa Thabana, spokesperson for the Lejweleputswa police, confirmed that a case of Burglary Residential was opened and registered at the Welkom Police Station after the complainant reported at the police station.

"The police would like to bring it to the attention of the public that there are a limited number of allocated police vehicles at every station area. These are dedicated to serving every member of the public.

“A vehicle is dispatched to a complaint as soon as it is available to attend to the next complaint. The police remains committed to ensuring that every complaint receives adequate attention as soon as reasonably possible," she

says.

In response to an extensive media enquiry concerning the vehicle situation, Capt. Loraine Earle, spokesperson for the police in the Free State, answered that the police acknowledges the concerns raised regarding the availability and condition of police vehicles.

The maintenance of vehicles

Ensuring that operational vehicles are in a roadworthy condition and readily available for policing duties remains a priority for police, she says:

"The police vehicles are maintained and serviced according to the prescribed government procurement and maintenance processes.

The replacement of tyres, wheel alignment, brake servicing, and general vehicle maintenance are conducted through an official government database of approved service providers.

“This process is essential to ensure compliance with regulations and budgetary allocations," says Earle.

Addressing vehicle shortages, Earle says the police operate on a rotational

fleet management system to maximize the availability of vehicles.

However, challenges such as scheduled maintenance, repairs, and unforeseen mechanical issues may occasionally impact the number of vehicles available for operational duties.

"Efforts are underway to address these issues and expedite vehicle repairs and servicing."

Vista also enquired about transport for victims for court appearances, or for medical checkups and processing.

"The police understands the importance of transporting victims, particularly those in vulnerable situations, as well as accused persons required to attend court.

“Where operational challenges arise, alternative arrangements are explored to ensure that victims receive the necessary assistance and that cases proceed without unnecessary delays.

“The police are actively engaging with relevant stakeholders, including fleet management services, to improve the turnaround time for vehicle repairs and ensure that operational policing is not compromised.

“Additionally, measures are being taken to ensure that all police vehicles comply with roadworthy standards to safeguard the safety of both officers and the public," says Earle.

She says the police force remains committed to delivering effective policing services and appreciates the concerns raised by the public.

Armand Cloete, FF Plus MP: Free State, says as many as 449 police vehicles in the Free State are out of use.

This figure was revealed in a response by Jabu Mbalula, Free State MEC for community safety, roads and transport.

Cloete says the vehicles are currently unusable due to, among other things, repairs and inspections.

He says the FF Plus will insist in the relevant portfolio committee in the legislature that the department explain why so many vehicles are out of use and how the situation will be resolved.

The party will also request Senzo Mchunu, minister of police, to investigate the matter.

“The Free State cannot afford for even one police vehicle or one police officer not to function effectively,” said Cloete.

Plant authorised at cost of millions

The Harmony Gold Mining Company has commissioned a Reverse Osmosis Plant at a cost of R19.5 million at its Target Operations in Allanridge.

Target had previously discharged water into Voëlpan at Nyakallong, Allanridge.

This pan has notoriously overflowed engulfing houses along the pan’s shoreline, and has a terrible stench to it affecting Nyakallong residents living there.

Moeketsi Manoeli, brand manager and communications for Harmony Gold, says Harmony ceased pumping water into this pan as of July 2023.

He says the plant has been commissioned in a bid to foster good relations with the local government and host communities in Nyakallong.

“Since then, continuous efforts have been made to ensure that excess water from the mine is treated and reused, resulting in no discharges into Voëlpan from Target Operations.

“During a recent visit from the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, including the acting executive mayor, municipal officials, and MMCs, the delegation confirmed that they are now convinced that Harmony is no longer pumping water into Voëlpan.

Target Operation has complied with its obligations under the Directive issued by Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) regarding discharges from the Target Mine,” says Manoeli.

He says the visit proved to be a pivotal moment.

“The municipal representatives confirmed that Harmony has indeed ceased pumping water into the pan. This visit not only addressed the con-

cerns raised but also demonstrated Harmony's commitment to maintaining open and honest communication with local authorities,” he says. This is a significant step forward in fostering trust and deepening the relationship between Harmony and the government. By addressing concerns, Harmony demonstrates its commitment to responsible mining practices and community engagement.

From classroom to lecture halls

From classroom teacher to PhD lecturer, Bronville girl beats the odds, who says a small-town girl cannot dream big?

Nicole Drude, now formally known as Dr Drude, was once just a young teacher from the streets of Bronville. She is now a university lecturer with a PhD and a heart full of purpose.

Her journey started in 2006 at North-West University, (NWU) where she completed her teacher training and graduated in 2010.

After teaching for two years, she felt the need to deepen her knowledge and make a bigger impact.

She went on to further her studies at the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free STate, where she obtained her B.Ed Honours in 2012, followed by a master’s degree in Education in 2017.

She was honoured with her PhD qualification at a graduation ceremony at the CUT on 19 March this year, surrounded by the love and support of her family and friends.

Her doctoral research focused on inclusive education, explicitly supporting teachers and School-Based Support Teams (SBSTs).

With years of experience on the SBST, she understood the challenges of supporting learners with barriers, especially in full-service schools.

She was honoured with this inspiring achievement on 19 March 2025.

Her thesis introduced a practical support framework

for schools and the Department of Basic Education (DBE) to better address these needs.

Desire for more

Her frustration with the basic education system and her passion for inclusive teaching led her to higher education. In 2024, she discovered her love for working with students who had a bigger goal in mind and thus transitioned to a fulltime university lecturer role.

Drude says the shift from teaching school learners to lecturing university students was eye-opening.

“You have to treat students as adults, allowing for more independence while still offering guidance,” she said.

She appreciates the respect and eagerness to learn that

university students bring, which reignited her passion for teaching.

Her PhD has shaped her teaching approach, focusing on differentiated instruction, learner-centred methods, and accessibility.

She hopes to engage with teachers through community outreach, sharing inclusive strategies and building their confidence in supporting all learners.

Though her academic path was challenging, especially with the setbacks of Covid-19 pandemic and the loss of her sister, she credits her faith and determination for seeing her through. “I wanted to finish it for her,” she said.

Looking ahead, Drude plans to grow as a lecturer, publish research from her thesis, and supervise postgraduate students - aiming for the title of professor one day.

Outside of being an academic powerhouse, she is a proud mother to a handsome young boy, Neymar Swartz, fiancée to Rafael Swartz, and a community role model.

“I am just a simple girl from Bronville,” she says. “But I hope to inspire the next generation of doctors, especially in our coloured communities.”

Her advice?

“Do not overthink it. Just start and keep going. If you plan to get out of the basic education space, gather your support network, enrol and do not look back. Yes, it will be challenging, but what is even more challenging is staying in and at the same place year in and year out. - Heidrè Malgas

Getting to New York in July 2025 is quite a quandary for a talented young Goldfielder who, despite winning a place in an amazing global platform, is battling to find funding to represent his country there, and not even the government is prepared to assist this young ambassador with funding.

The 20-year-old Katleho (Emmy) Moleko from Virginia, has been invited to the International Modelling and Talent Association (IMTA) convention in New York, America, taking place between 5 and 12 July.

However, it seems bureaucracy and red tape could dampen the shine of this upand-coming young star even before it projects itself into international galaxy of stars.

Moleko discovered his talent at a young age through a love for singing and acting.

This vibrant youngster studied drama in high school, which helped him refine his skills, and with the support from family and friends.

He realised early on that he could turn his passion into a career.

Moleko is skilled in acting, modelling, and singing, and will join artists from around the globe in a bid to gain exposure.

To also connect with industry professionals.

In September 2024, Moleko had the incredible opportunity to perform at the annual International Arts and Talent Showcase (IATS).

“This is a platform designed

to give African artists a chance to showcase their talents to international agents and managers.

“It was at this showcase when I received a callback invitation to attend the prestigious IMTA convention,” says Moleko.

An excited Moleko says this is the perfect opportunity to elevate his career.

“I am eager to meet industry professionals, expand my network and, most importantly, showcase my talents on an international stage.

“I am also aiming to grow in our local and national industry,” says Moleko.

During the 2024 competition, he impressed international scouts.

From a young age, Moleko

has been drawn to the arts. He first started with singing, but over time discovered his love for acting, and then came modelling. " This has become an important part of my artistic journey,” he says.

Moleko matriculated at the Hoërskool Hentie Cilliers in 2022. He is currently pursuing a qualification in business studies at the North-West University (NWU).

Moleko says his training includes singing and vocal lessons which he did at the Goudveld-Hoërskool, as well as acting classes through his agency and also privately.

He is professionally represented by the 33 and Me Talent Agency and is a skilled and talented multi-faceted entertainer.

Moleko is also a proficient vocalist and has received certificates and a music trophy from the ATKV for his performance. To be able to attend the IMTA convention in New York will be a dream come true, but attending such an event requires significant financial resources.

His father, Andries Moleko, has estimated that his son needs R150 000 to make his dream come.

"This is steep sum of money for a youngster to amass to fulfill his dreams. We are praying for support to make this a reality," says Moleko Snr. Moleko can be contacted on 063 950 1944 or, alternatively, by sending an email to emmymoleko@gmail.com to offer support on his physical, as well as his artistic, journey.

sellers, let's talk straight: it's no secret we're in a buyer's market. The interest rate remains unchanged at 11% and according to the latest Property24 report (April 2025), Welkom has over 700 properties actively listed for sale, with an average of 100 new listings hitting the market each month. However only 138 erven and 39 sectional title units have been registered as sold this year—meaning fewer than 1 in 5 homes are actually selling. To be part of that successful 18% your pricing and presentation strategy needs to be spot-on.

In this kind of market, serious sellers need to get serious about their pricing and presentation strategies. One of the biggest challenges is the gap between asking prices and what buyers are actually paying. Too many sellers still list their homes high, hoping for luck. We understand the emotional connection—every seller believes their property is “the best.” But buyers are doing their research and are focused on value.

The First Few Weeks Matter Most

The moment your property hits the market is when it gets the most exposure. This is your window to attract serious buyers. If your property is overpriced from the start, buyers will scroll past it. Once that first wave of interest fades, it's hard to regain momentum, and sellers often find themselves dropping the price later—sometimes multiple

times—which weakens your position during negotiations.

If It Needs Work, Fix It First

Another crucial point: most homes in Welkom at nearly all price points, require some form of maintenance or repair Whether it's new carpets, cracked ceilings, or outdated kitchens—these may seem like “small” issues to a seller, but buyers see them as extra costs on top of bond repayments, transfer fees, moving expenses, and utility connections.

If you want top price, your home must be market ready Expecting buyers to overlook repairs while paying premium prices doesn't work—especially when there are similar properties in better condition for the same or lower prices. A home that's clean, functional, and freshly maintained will always attract more serious buyers.

Curiosity a force to be reckoned with

The Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology (FEBIT) at the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, has conferred the prestigious honorary doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering (honoris causa) to its astute alumni, William Hlakoane.

The recipient is a mechanical engineer by profession and currently serves as the Denel Group executive landward.

Hlakoane hails from Thabong, Welkom, in the Lejweleputswa District of the Free State.

He acquired both his national diploma and Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering qualifications at the CUT.

According to Hlakoane, his journey in the field of engineering began in his early childhood when he and his peers used wire to build cars.

He mentioned that he has always been an inquisitive child, who always loved fiddling and figuring things out.

“As a child, I enjoyed assembling and disassembling things; and I also loved making wire cars. I think I would have been the first person to invent a car made of aluminium or zinc sheets. I was a very curious young boy, so it was no surprise that I ended up in the engineering field,” he said.

On arrival at the CUT 33 years ago, then called the Technikon Free State, Hlakoane had set his sights on studying Electrical or Civil Engineering –however, both programmes were full.

He registered for Mechanical Engineering, but the challenges were yet to come.

He said the first of these was having to learn in Afrikaans after receiving his basic education in English.

However, he faced the challenge head-on, developing a relationship of support with his lecturer, Prof. Deon de Beer.

“It was a very good relationship, I must say. He was the head of the department of Mechanical Engineering, and he was a lecturer in Mechanics. I think at the time he was the only lecturer that would give classes in both English and Afrikaans.

“His books were in English, so he would teach both in Afrikaans and English, regardless of what most of the class was expecting.

“During the time we started forming that relationship, I was closer to him than the other lecturers. Maybe because of my inquisitiveness, I do not know. I was eager to learn as well,”

Hlakoane explained.

Determined, and eager to learn, he would sit with a dictionary and translate all his study materials – which worked, as he began to understand

the language.

He was even recruited to assist other students with translations, eventually becoming a lecturer’s assistant.

Hlakoane’s dedication qualified him for a bursary, which helped ease his financial pressure.

“I was highly driven at the time. I had my own dreams as a child – you know, a big house, all those sorts of things – and this is what I wanted to do. So, it was a determination from my side to succeed.”

Hlakoane said the announcement that the prestigious honorary degree would be conferred brought him pride and emotional joy.

“I was in tears. It made me think back to where it all started. Thinking back on the relationship that I have with the institution, from the good

old days to now, and everything that I have achieved throughout my career. Out of a million of the things that I ever wanted in my life, this honour and recognition is the one that my family and I will cherish forever,” said Hlakoane joyfully.

Asked about his leadership and how he manages to wear multiple caps in his role, Hlakoane said he has always taken the approach of empowering himself with all the available knowledge, insisting on not only focusing on one specific job role.

“I always wanted to be knowledgeable, but what has been outstanding for me in my career is the ability to be able to work in different environments and apply my engineering knowledge in various aspects of businesses.

“People always ask me why I know

so much, and my answer is simple: curiosity.”

He added that his ability to wear many caps in different environments has allowed him to be where he is today.

“Even outside of my career, I always say, the lessons learnt from school only gives you a certain level of thinking or knowledge. But it is how you use it to have more knowledge beyond those lessons.

“Use the same knowledge that you have gained to go beyond what you have acquired here,” he said.

Accepting his honorary doctorate, Hlakoane stated he was proud of the university for what it had become.

“I am a very proud alumni of this institution, and I wish all of you the success that you deserve.”

Student body told to dream big despite their impairments

The sky is the limit for Lindiwe Mothibeli, who received her advanced diploma in Human Resource Management during the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, Autumn Graduation Ceremony in Welkom.

This is pursuant to the CUT’s continuation to providing an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students to achieve their academic and personal goals bears. Mothibeli’s graduation, with her being a visually impaired student, is a testament to this.

She walked the red carpet to receive her qualification at the Welkom campus ceremony on 20 March.

Born and raised in Senekal in the Eastern Free State, Mothibeli said her journey has been one of resilience, determination and unwavering ambition. Despite her visual impairment, she never allowed her condition to define her capabilities.

With the right support system in place, she was able to thrive.

Mothibeli attributes much of her success to the CUT Disability Unit (DU), which serves as a crucial link between students with disabilities and their lecturers.

She acknowledges the DU’s role in ensuring a smooth learning process by providing essential support services, including scribes for writing tasks and communication assistance with lecturers.

“My journey with the CUT was a smooth ride because I had all the support I needed. The DU made the process of teaching and learning comfortable for me.

“Whatever I needed, I would communicate with them, and they would liaise with my lecturers.”

As the youngest of four siblings and the second graduate in her family, Mothibeli’s aspirations extend beyond academics. She is currently pursuing her National Qualifications Framework

(NQF) Level 8 qualification and has her sight set on a master’s degree.

Mothibeli is deeply passionate about assisting other students with disabilities to embrace their identities and reach their full potential. Through invitations from the DU, she actively conducts workshops to assist lecturers from various institutions in creating a more inclusive learning experience for students with disabilities.

Her mission is to encourage both students and educators to foster a more understanding and accommodating academic environment.

She advised other students who are visually impaired to embrace their uniqueness and dream big.

“To those who are visually impaired like me, I want you to get out of your shell and explore the world around you. I also want you to accept yourself the way you are. Dream big and ensure that you achieve whatever you want. The sky is the limit. Do not allow your circumstances to become a barrier to your success,” she said.

In conclusion, Mothibeli urged parents to support their children’s educational pursuits, regardless of their disabilities.

“Parents, please do not block your child from coming to school because of their condition. Allow them to explore different avenues, as they have potential like any other person.”

Assistive tools empower students

The vice-chancellor and principal of the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, Prof. Pamela Dube. presented assistive devices to two students.

The pair are Kojang Magret Motloung, who holds a diploma in Office Management and Technology, and Bongani Mazendela, a third-year Office Management and Technology student.

The CUT is determined to provide an inclusive environment and support where all students can excel and achieve greatness.

It was a day filled with emotions and excitement for Motloung as she not only obtained her qualification, but also received an assistive device that will enhance her independence and participation in daily academic activities.

The handover was in commemoration of Neurodiversity Celebration Week, a worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences.

The celebration further aims to create awareness about neurodiversity in the university community, focusing on neuro differences and the talents of those in the neurodiverse community.

Dube added that the awareness also aimed to transform how neurodivergent individuals are perceived and how they can be supported while creating a more inclusive and equitable culture that celebrates differences and empowers every individual.

“Over the years, support such as

assistive devices have been given to students with disabilities through funding from private donors and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). Our role as a university is to provide learning facilities, support, and unleash the skills and talents of our neurodivergent students.”

Academic tradition renewed

After six years of dedication, perseverance, and sleepless nights, Charl Cromhout and Corbin Smit have successfully attained their Bachelor of Engineering in Technology: Civil Engineering qualification.

Their journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring students, demonstrating that commitment and passion pave the way to success.

Beyond earning their qualifications, the duo takes pride in being among the first graduates to don newly launched academic regalia of the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State. This not only celebrates the achievement of graduates, but also ushers in a new era of pride and distinction for the university.

and sports was not easy, but I learnt to master the importance of time management. It was challenging but setting my priorities right helped a lot. Once you know what you want in life and what is important, everything else falls into place,” he said.

For Corbin Smit, earning a degree in Civil Engineering carries special sentiments as he is carefully following in his father’s footsteps, who is also his role model.

“My father holds a diploma in Civil Engineering, and I am proud to be the first in my family to earn a degree in this field. This is a tremendous honour!”

“I had previously graduated with a diploma in Civil Engineering, but this experience has taken my graduation journey to a new level. Dressed in this new regalia makes my achievement even more recognised and memorable, as I become a part of a renewed tradition that future generations will follow,” said Cromhout.

He also plays rugby as a fly-half, and has proven that anything is possible with the right mindset.

“Balancing my academics

Originally from Upington in the Northern Cape, Smit said he has already secured his employment at a port in the agricultural sector.

His success story reaffirms the university’s role in shaping industry-ready professionals who make meaningful contributions in their fields.

Motloung hails from Petrus Steyn, a small farming town. She is the firstborn of four children and the first to graduate in the family, setting a good example for her younger siblings.

“I am grateful to the CUT for all the

support and for ensuring that students with disabilities are not left behind. This device will further enhance my independence and participation in my daily academic activities,” said Motloung.

Cum laude achievers raise the bar

Excellence took centre stage in the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences graduation ceremony as a group of outstanding graduates in the advanced diploma Health Management celebrated their academic achievement.

Among them, six distinguished themselves by achieving cum laude, setting a remarkable example of dedication and perseverance in the field of health management.

The advanced diploma in Health Management is designed to develop professionals who can navigate the complexities of modern healthcare systems and contribute towards improving service delivery.

Their journey to this achievement was not an easy one. It required resilience, commitment and an enhanced drive to make an impact in the health sector.

While many students

achieved success on the day, these six graduates went above and beyond, proving that hard work and passion can yield exceptional results.

Their accomplishments serve as an inspiration to future students, demonstrating that academic excellence is within reach for those who are willing to put in the extra effort. As they step into their career paths, they carry not just their qualifications, but also the knowledge and potential to transform the healthcare system through leadership and innovation.

Choir member comes out on top with honorable excellence

Meet Simon Sebokolodi, who graduated cum laude in an advanced diploma Human Resources Management (HRM) course and is an organist for the choir of the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State. He serenaded the graduates with the “Seanamarena” melody, a popular Sesotho celebratory song that is usually played at events. Sebokolodi played the song on his organ to complement the euphonious voices from the CUT choristers who also captivated the audience and got the melomaniacs singing along to the popular song.

Born and bred in Welkom’s Lejweleputswa District, Sebokolodi was raised by devoted, churchgoing

parents.

He was introduced to choral music at a young age, a hobby that has made him popular among his peers at the Welkom campus.

“Music was not my passion until my high school years at the Welkom Technical High School (THS). I joined the school choir, led by Mrs Anderson, who did not just engrave music in my heart but also sparked my interest in playing the piano. I was often captivated by the way she played; she was unique, and her melodies also touched me in ways I could never imagine, and that inspired me to one day play like her.”

Sebokolodi learnt how to play the church organ in 2018 and has never

looked back.

“Being part of the church choir often meant that from time to time, I was tasked to play classical music. This was quite challenging, because as a self-taught organist I could not read the musical notes.

“I had to rely heavily on listening and playing by ear, which was very time-consuming,” he said.

Post Covid-19 pandemic, he decided to take his self-taught skill to a professional level and is currently working on his grade 6 piano studies.

However, Sebokolodi added that he does not see music as a lifetime career.

“I consider music as my hobby. My focus is to build my career as a human resource practitioner.”

He said his graduation brought a sense of pride and accomplishment, as it reflects not only his academic excellence but also his dedication and perseverance.

“Given the level of commitment to balance my studies, choir participation and piano playing, achieving such an honour feels even more rewarding.

“For me, it signifies the ability to multi-task and execute tasks successfully. What is more important is a combination of discipline, time management and creativity,” he added.

Sebokolodi is currently pursuing a postgraduate degree in HRM and hopes to reach the stars.

Stuck in a ‘Q and A’ loop

The Welkom Airport remains a bone of contention. During a stakeholder meeting that was held on 2 April, the Welkom Business Forum, some DA councillors and the developer had put forward many questions, but no answers given in turn. “What they did decide on was that the business forum will nominate a task team that will work in conjunction with the councillors, the municipality, and the developer to get all the questions answered, as currently there is a huge communication gap,” says cllr Estelle Dansey. “The questions regarding the current lease agreements of tenants have been taken back to the municipality and they committed to another meeting where all the questions will be answered,” she confirmed.

The heavy rains over the Goldfields since 1 April, when the first 30mm gushed down, has been virtually incessant and has saturated the parched earth. Accident

causes serious injuries

The Welkom Flying Squad members were summoned to a motor vehicle accident scene on the R730 road between Bronville and Virginia in which three people were seriously injured.

The accident happened on Tuesday (8 April) at about 09:15, when two vehicles, a SAPS Canter, used for passenger transport, and an ambulance had a collision.

The occupants of both vehicles were already receiving medical attention from emergency services when the police arrived.

It is alleged that the SAPS canter was driven by one adult male with no passengers on board.

The emergency services vehicle was occupied by one adult male and one adult female.

“The three occupants were taken to the hospital after they sustained serious injuries.

““Circumstances leading to the accident are unclear at this stage.

“The Police will be investigating a case of Reckless and negligent driving,” says Sgt. Palesa Thabana, Lejweleputswa SAPS media liaison officer.

SUSPECT IN CUSTODY WHILE CRIMES ARE INVESTIGATED

The alleged shooter of a 37-year-old man who was fatally wounded following a shooting incident on the Erfdeel Road near the Gugulethu informal settlement in Thabong on Monday, 31 March, has been remanded in custody.

When members of the police arrived at the scene, they found Lehlohonolo Edgar Nkone covered in blood, with multiple gunshot wounds.

“It is alleged the victim was loading his vehicle on a lowbed truck when the suspect came speeding towards the accident scene.

“The deceased indicated to the suspect

to slow down. It is alleged that an argument ensued when there was no space for the suspect to pass. The suspect allegedly took out a firearm and fired multiple gunshots at the victim, fatally wounding him before fleeing the scene.

“The 37-year-old victim, who was working as a taxi driver, was declared dead on the scene,” says Sgt. Palesa Thabana, spokesperson for the Lejweleputswa police.

Thabana says it is further alleged that the suspect was reportedly linked to another shooting incident that occurred earlier that night at a tavern in Thabong.

A 40-year-old man suffered two gunshot wounds while the second victim (39) suffered head injuries after being hit with a beer bottle.

The two victims were taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

The 30-year-old Tshepang Mapota was subsequently arrested. He recently appeared in the Welkom Magistrates’ Court on one charge of murder and two counts of attempted murder and malicious damage to property.

The case was postponed to 15 April for a formal bail application, while the suspect remains in custody.

Goldfielders brave Two Oceans

Some 41 marathon runners from the Goldfields took part in the annual Two Oceans Marathon that took place in Cape Town this past weekend.

Local runners say the marathon once again delivered an unforgettable experience – an iconic blend of breathtaking views, tough climbs, and the electric spirit that defines Cape Town’s premier running event.

Local marathon runner Dean Dodd of the Goudveld Multisport Club says from the early morning chill at the start to the golden views over Chapman’s Peak, the Goudveld Multi Sport runners gave it their all across both the 21 km and 56 km races.

“The conditions were mostly ideal, with cool temperatures and just enough breeze to keep things comfortable – perfect for chasing goals or soaking up the atmosphere.”

Dodd says like any event of this scale, there were a few hiccups, and some runners experienced confusion around seeding and cutoff points.

“But these didn’t dampen the

overall spirit. The crowd support, camaraderie on course, and the pride of finishing more than made up for it.

“As Goudveld Multisport we showed up strong, ran with heart, and left with memories. For many of us, the countdown to 2026 has already begun,” he says.

The club’s Louis Fourie finished the ultra in 05:32:40 and the half marathon in 01:56:47. The other finishers in the ultra six-hour cut-off were Michael Conradie, Hendrik Janse van Rensburg, Nico Nortje, Allen Simpson and Albertus Viljoen. In the half marathon the two-hour cut-off finishers were Rünaldi de Beer, Werdi Dodd, Elizabeth Dodd, Paul Lombard, Corene Malherbe, Anéé Mitchley, Freddy Mitchley and Rozelle Rheeder.

Harmony Striders sent 27 athletes to Cape Town, and of these ten athletes made the six-hour cut off and three made the five-hour cut off. Top runner Lebohang Lala finished the ultra in a time of 04:38:49.

The five-hour finishers were Morne Nel, Sentle Mokholela and Jan den Hartog; and the six-hour finishers

Nkhetheni Masupa and Abe

a time of 06:19:45.

were: Daemane Makhate, Ntombizodwa Danisa, Pierre Spurr, Potlako Sekokotana, Muso Molefi, Justice Shelile, Augustus Makhasana, Chantel Rheeder, Thabo Sejamoholo. In the half marathon the runners who made the two-hour cut off were: Morne Nel, Amelia du Plessis Rina Nel Sheriah Rose Abiel Faro Benedict Tsenoli and Nandipha Dina.

Athlete keeps shining brighter

Welkom girl Tyla Wasmuth is making a name for herself in the world of athletics, and was named the best female field athlete at the university’s first year athletics meet this year.

Tyler matriculated from Goudveld-Hoërskool in 2024 and is currently a first-year student at the University of the Free State.

She participated in various ASA Leagues in Bloemfontein and broke several records. Tyler was included in the ASA Free State team and participated in the U20 category during the SA's.

Here she obtained a bronze medal for discus and also threw a personal best (PB) of 50.84m. She achieves a PB of

13.01 in shot put and ended 7th.

Tyla was also included in the senior Free State ASA team and will participate at the SAs from 24 to 26 April in Potchefstroom. She will also participate in USSAS from 1 to 3 May in Pretoria.

“Tyla's goal is to develop her full potential and to do what she does to glorify the Lord's Name. She still has hard work ahead of her but enjoys every moment in the circle.

“She has big dreams for the future, but with endurance, determination and discipline she hopes to improve her distances,” says her proud father Wassie Wasmuth.

The independent Welkom runners who finished the ultra within the five-hour range and the half marathon within the two-hour range are Abe Nkomo (56 km and 21km), Nkhetheni Masupa (56km and 21km), Collin Delport (56km and 21km), Tshehla Serekego (56 km), Jacob Mothokoa (56km), Matthews Musimanga (56km/), Sentle Mokholela (56km), Debu Mosiane (56km), Trevor Nkosi (56km), 11.

Nkomo got silver medals from both 56km (Saturday) and 21km (Sunday) just like last year.
