‘Rather support us...’

The recent fires across the Overberg have raised many questions. Some believe it is arson while others say it is just the time of year.

According to one of them who wished to remain anonymous, firefighters couldn’t confirm whether it was arson, and asked people not to speculate but rather to support the firefighters. “We regularly ask for donations and people just have to keep us in their prayers. It is very challenging out there.” In one of the worst fires yet in the Gansbaai district, which has been raging for more than two weeks, more than 4 000 ha have been destroyed.

On 6 December the De Kelders/

Gansbaai fire flared up again in the Walker Bay Nature Reserve on the Stanford side.

“The fire remains inaccessible and is currently burning out of control,” Dr Dean O’Neill, Overstrand Municipal Manager, said. “There are no firebreaks in the area where the fire is moving. The hot weather and dry winds also make it difficult to contain the fire.” He confirmed the Overstrand municipal firefighters were battling the windy conditions and high temperatures, which were pushing the fire into unburnt areas.

“What worsens these conditions is the old veld age and dense rooikrans vegetation. Residents can expect smoke in the area.”

On Sunday fresh ground crews were deployed to work along the fire lines in preparation for the expected change in wind direction and increase in wind speed. The south-easterly wind forecast was likely to push the fire into unburnt areas. “Ground teams have been assigned to the active lines,” O’Neill said, “and will, as a last resort, attempt to close the block and the Overstrand Fire Brigade, Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS), Working on Fire and landowners were all on site and fully deployed.”

It appeared the fire was under control, but there were still places where it ws smouldering.

• Tragedy struck the informal settlement in Kleinmond on Saturday, when a fire broke out there.

Authorities were on high alert in the Overstrand Municipality after a fire destroyed at least 12 structures in the Overhills informal settlement, Kleinmond in the early hours of Saturday 6 December. Local firefighters responded to the blaze at approximately 03:00 and no casualties were reported. The cause of the fire is unknown.

“Initial assessments show that about 12 structures were destroyed,” O’Neill pointed out.

One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation, he said.

West Coast Rock Lobster shing dates announced

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Willie Aucamp, has announced the designated recreational fishing dates for the 2025-’26 West Coast Rock Lobster season, providing clarity for thousands of recreational fishers planning their harvesting activities. The approved fishing dates are scheduled across three months: 20, 21, 27 and 28 December 2025, 3, 4, 24, 25 and 31 January 2026, 1 February 2026 and 21 and 22 March 2026. “These dates have been finalised following a thorough and science-based assessment to ensure that

recreational opportunities are balanced with the long-term sustainability of our marine resources,” Aucamp stated.

The department’s selection process considered multiple factors critical to marine conservation and fisher safety. The timing takes into account the West Coast Rock Lobster breeding season, alignment with weekends and public holidays during the festive period, and low-tide periods that maximise safe harvesting conditions. The strategic scheduling reflects the government’s commitment to evidence-based fisheries manage-

ment while accommodating recreational fishing traditions during peak holiday periods.

Recreational fishers must comply with comprehensive regulations to ensure sustainable harvesting. Fishing is strictly prohibited on all dates not included in the announced schedule, and participants must hold valid recreational permits available through South African Post Office or the department’s e-permitting platform at https://www.fishing.dffe.gov. za. The regulations also enforce specific bag and size limits designed to support

stock recovery and maintain harvesting within sustainable thresholds.

“Responsible recreational harvesting today safeguards the ecological integrity of our marine ecosystems and secures this heritage resource for generations to come,” Aucamp emphasised, thanking stakeholders for their patience during the finalisation and gazetting process. The announcement provides recreational fishers with advance notice to plan their activities while reinforcing the government’s priority of balancing public access with long-term resource sustainability.

Another clean audit for ODM

The Overberg District can proudly claim two of the Western Cape’s most financially-responsible local governments, with both Overstrand and Cape Agulhas municipalities receiving clean audits from the Auditor-General for the 2024-’25 financial year.

Overstrand Municipality achieved its remarkable 13th consecutive clean audit, while Cape Agulhas has secured its 12th clean audit in a row, a combined 25 years’ exemplary financial management and governance across the two coastal municipalities.

OVERSTRAND’S SUSTAINED EXCELLENCE

Executive Mayor Archie Klaas attributed Overstrand’s continued success to the dedication of Municipal Manager Dr Dean O’Neill, his directors, and the entire municipal staff.

“This clean audit shows that we are managing our resources responsibly and doing our best for our communities,” Klaas said.

O’Neill emphasised that the achievement reflected the municipality’s consistent approach to running operations efficiently and transparently.

“It’s a team effort. Every one of the staff and our councillors contributes to making sure the people of Overstrand are served responsibly.” He gave special recognition to the audit-support team working behind the scenes to coordinate and maintain audit-readiness.

CAPE AGULHAS MATCHES EXCELLENCE

Cape Agulhas Executive Mayor Councillor Raymond Ross expressed pride in his municipality’s 12th consecutive clean audit. “A clean audit means the Auditor-General found no material misstatements in our financial statements and confirmed full compliance with all relevant legislation,” he pointed out. Ross highlighted that the result reflected the municipality’s “unwavering commitment to good governance, transparency and accountability” with its vision, “Together for Excellence”, serving as, more than just words, a tangible promise to residents.

WHAT CLEAN AUDITS MEAN

Clean audits represent the highest standard of municipal financial management, indicating that auditors found no material misstatements in financial records and confirmed full compliance with relevant legislation. For residents this translates into assurance that their tax contributions were being managed responsibly and transparently. The sustained success of both municipalities stands in stark contrast to many local governments that struggle with qualified or adverse audit opinions, often indicating financial mismanagement or governance failures.

REGIONAL SUCCESS STORY

Overstrand dam levels still good

The combined success of these two Overberg municipalities demonstrates exceptional regional governance, with 25 years of collective clean-audit achievements representing millions of rands in public funds managed with integrity and accountability. Both mayors acknowledged that their achievements resulted from collaborative effort extending beyond municipal staff to include councillors, residents and supporting families who contribute to maintaining these high standards. “This milestone proves what we can achieve when we work together as a community and as a team,” Ross noted, while Overstrand Municipality extended thanks to “all employees, families and residents for their role in maintaining these standards over the years.

“The consecutive clean audits position both municipalities as exemplars of good governance, providing their communities with confidence that public resources are being stewarded responsibly while maintaining the high service delivery standards residents expect. As both municipalities continue their commitment to excellence, residents can take pride in belonging to communities that demonstrate fiscal responsibility and transparent governance in an environment where such achievements remain rare.”

While dam levels across the Western Cape continue their alarming decline, triggering warnings of potential water restrictions in the New Year, the Overstrand Municipality finds itself in the fortunate position of maintaining reasonably healthy reservoir levels, though officials stress that continued water-wise practices remain crucial.

The latest Department of Water and Sanitation figures paint a concerning picture provincially, with major dam systems showing persistent declines as summer heat intensifies. The Cape Town System Dams have dropped from 80,94% to 79,08% this week, while the broader Western Cape network has declined to 71,22%, a stark contrast to the 96% and 91,7% respectively recorded at this time in 2024.

Against this backdrop the Overstrand’s four major dams present a more reassuring picture; Kraaibosch Dam, supplying the Greater Gansbaai area, leads at 97,7%, showing only a marginal decline from last year’s 102%. Remarkably, Pearly Beach has actually improved, sitting at 96% compared to 86% in Novem-

ber 2024.

De Bos Dam, the lifeline for Hermanus and surrounding areas from Benguela Cove and Fisherhaven to Voëlklip, maintains a healthy 90,6%, while Buffelsrivier Dam, serving coastal communities of Rooi-Els, Pringle Bay and Betty’s Bay, stands at 88,4%. Ntombizanele Bila-Mupariwa, DWS Western Cape Provincial Head, confirmed that the provincial water-supply system continues showing significantly lower levels compared to last year, with recent rainfall proving insufficient to offset consumption and evaporation from increased temperatures and drying winds.

The province’s largest reservoir, Theewaterskloof Dam, exemplifies the broader trend, declining to 74,2% from 75,48% last week. This 17 percentage-point difference from last year’s levels has raised red flags among water management officials.

While Overstrand Municipality confirms that water restrictions are not currently being considered locally, officials emphasise that the situation remains fluid. “Water demand trends and dam levels will be monitored closely during the summer months and may influence the situation,” municipal authorities stated. The municipality’s proactive stance includes maintaining permanent bylaws limiting water use, with garden watering prohibited daily between 09:00 and 17:00 to prevent unnecessary evaporation losses.

The broader Western Cape’s struggles serve as a stark reminder of how quickly water security can change. During the 2017 drought provincial dam levels plummeted to a critically low 24%. With Cape Town’s tourist season ramping up and little rainfall forecast authorities are preparing for increased pressure on regional water resources. “Water is a scarce resource and must be used sparingly,” the Overstrand Municipality reminded residents, echoing the provincial call for responsible usage.

While Overstrand residents can take comfort in their current water security the municipality’s message remains clear: “Let’s all continue to be water-wise.” In a province where potential conservation measures loom and memories of severe drought remain fresh, vigilance and responsible consumption today help ensure water security tomorrow.

The province’s largest reservoir, Theewaterskloof Dam, exemplifies the broader trend, declining to 74,2% from 75,48% last week.

Survivors detail lasting trauma

The devastating and long-lasting impact of sexual violence was laid bare in Cape Town High Court this week as three rape survivors detailed how serial rapist Sihle Makaula’s crimes fundamentally changed their lives. (Hermanus Times 3 December, “Serial rapist gets four life terms”)

In powerful victim-impact statements read during Makaula’s sentencing hearing the women described years of trauma, broken relationships, academic struggles and ongoing mental-health challenges stemming from their attack. The rapes occurred between July 2019 and August 2020 in Grabouw.

The first victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told the court how the attack “took my innocence away from me” and fundamentally altered her ability to form relationships. “I don’t trust men anymore. The only man I trust to date is my father,” she said. “The case also affected my relationship with my boyfriend. I don’t want to be intimate with him anymore.”

The young woman described how the trauma derailed her education: “This incident also affected my studies because I could not focus on my schoolwork. I started isolating myself from my family and friends.”

In her statement the first victim revealed how she turned to alcohol and drugs to cope with the overwhelming trauma. “I started drinking and smoking more than I used to before. I wanted to escape the pain and trauma that I was going through, but it didn't help at all.” She credited counselling and a strong support system for her recovery, while acknowledging the permanent impact: “I am much better now with the strong support system I have but I will never forget what happened to me.”

A second victim described living in constant fear following her attack, telling the court: “I felt scared because I thought this

guy was going to kill me after the incident. I was even scared to walk around because I was scared if it could happen again.”

She said the psychological toll was severe. “I felt so depressed and distressed I wanted to kill myself. I slept all day, cried and asked myself so many questions, concerning why this had happened to me.”

While counselling provided temporary relief, she said fear continues to plague her daily life.

The third victim spoke of cognitive impacts that continued to affect her years later. “Before the incident I was brilliant at school, and now my mind is damaged by the drugs from the clinic and the feelings. Sometimes I forget things, but I am fighting...” She described the isolation brought on by shame and fear. “I am scared to talk about what happened to anyone; I feel they will laugh at me. Even my boyfriend doesn't know because I am afraid he will leave me.”

The statements highlighted inconsistent access to effective support services. While some victims found counselling helpful, others struggled to access care that met their needs. The courage displayed by these women in sharing their experiences publicly underscores both the devastating impact of sexual violence and the strength of survivors.

With Makaula now sentenced to four life terms plus 63 years’ imprisonment the victims can begin to find closure, though their statements make clear that healing from such trauma is a long-term process requiring sustained support. The detailed impact statements serve as a stark reminder of why gender-based violence has been declared a national disaster in South Africa and the critical importance of both prevention and comprehensive victim support services.

All about the formation of a trust in South Africa

A trust exists when the founder of the trust has handed over or is bound to hand over to another the control of a property which, or the proceeds of which, is to be administered or disposed of by the other (trustee or administrator). Anyone who has the capacity to undertake contractual obligations or to make a will may create a trust. In addition, a trust may be set up by the court, by statute or statutory authority. In each case, however, an intention to create a trust must be present:

• Trusts created by agreement (inter vivos): These arise from a stipulatio alteri , where the founder and trustee conclude a contract containing provisions for a third party. Beneficiaries only obtain rights once they accept the benefit; without acceptance no rights exist. This principle was confirmed in Crookes v Watson 1956 (1) SA 277 (A).

• Trusts created by will:

A testamentary trust is established when a testator bequeaths assets subject to administration by trustees, either because beneficiaries (such as minors) are incapable of managing the assets themselves, or because the testator imposes specific conditions. These trusts must comply with the formal requirements of the Wills Act 7 of 1953.

• Trusts created by court order: Courts may create trusts, often at the request of parties, to address specific needs; for example, protecting damages awarded to someone unable to manage their affairs or safeguarding assets for children in a divorce. Such trusts require careful structuring to account for tax implications, including donations tax, transfer duty, capital gains tax and income tax.

Hy moes dit namens haar by Old Mutual, waar hy as finansiële raadgewer gewerk het, belê het.

Pink buoys change water safety

Since 2017 bright pink rescue buoys have been quietly revolutionising drowning prevention across South Africa's waterways, earning international acclaim while saving countless lives through simple yet effective design.

The National Sea Rescue Institute’s

Nine lifeguards return to duty in the Overstrand

Nine experienced lifeguards have taken up positions across Overstrand’s beaches, lagoons and public swimming facilities to ensure visitor safety during the busy holiday season.

The team of local lifeguards, affectionately known as “homegrown boytjies”, will be on duty daily from 09:00 to 18:00 throughout the holiday period.

The roster includes Rodrigo Natus, Warren Fisher, Que Martin, Angelo Gillion, Jordan Gibson, William Roberts, Shaun Dee McCree, Menzi Ndovela and Jaydon Jacobs.

Their coverage extends across the municipality's popular coastal destinations, including Blue Flag beaches, lagoons and the public swimming pool in Hawston. With sea temperatures currently at a pleasant 17°C and beaches already attracting many visitors taking advantage of sunny weather, the lifeguard presence provides crucial safety oversight. Municipal officials emphasise that beachgoers should swim only between the red and yellow flags, which mark safe, supervised swimming areas. Swimming outside these designated zones could expose

visitors to dangerous currents and other hazards.

Additional safety guidelines include ensuring lifeguards maintain visual contact with swimmers, raising an arm to signal distress while remaining calm, and only swimming in areas with lifeguard supervision and safety signage. For water-related emergencies, the public should contact NSRI Hermanus at 082 990 5967 or NSRI Kleinmond at 063 699 2765. Other emergencies can be reported to the Municipality's 24-hour Emergency Fire & Rescue Service on 028 312 2400. Day-to-day law enforcement complaints should be directed to 028 313 8996, while general enquiries and service delivery emergencies can be handled through Overstrand’s Contact Centre on 028 313 8000/8111.

Non-life-threatening service requests can be submitted through the municipal Citizen App. The deployment of familiar faces reflects the municipality’s commitment to maintaining high safety standards while using local expertise and community knowledge during the peak tourism season.

(NSRI) Pink Rescue Buoy initiative has transformed water safety at beaches, rivers, and dams where lifeguards are not on duty. These strategically placed emergency flotation devices serve dual purposes: reminding the public to exercise caution in unguarded waters and providing immediate assistance when someone gets into difficulty.

The innovation’s impact was recognized globally in 2018 when the International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF) honored the initiative with its prestigious Award for Innovation and Technology, acknowledging the programme’s effectiveness in preventing drownings through accessible emergency equipment.

Each rescue buoy is deliberately designed in bright pink to ensure maximum visibility in emergency situations. The colour choice proves crucial during rescue operations, allowing both victims and rescue services to quickly locate the flotation device when every second counts.

The buoys are mounted on sturdy poles with comprehensive signage explaining proper usage procedures. Critical information includes the NSRI’s emergency contact number and each buoy's unique identification number, enabling rescue services to pinpoint the exact location of an emergency when contacted.

“The identification system is particularly important," explained NSRI officials. “When someone calls our emergency line and provides the buoy number, we can immediately dispatch help to the correct location, potentially saving precious minutes.”

The practical design extends beyond emergency use. Each buoy features embossed ID numbers and NSRI contact details, facilitating their return to designated posts after usage or if they become displaced through theft or weather conditions.

Positioned at carefully selected high-risk locations including inland rivers, dams, and beaches throughout the country, these pink sentinels have become familiar sights to water enthusiasts. Their presence serves as both a safety reminder and reassurance that help is within reach.

The initiative represents the NSRI’s commitment to innovative drowning prevention, proving that sometimes the most effective solutions are elegantly simple. As South Africa’s aquatic recreational activities continue growing, these pink rescue buoys stand ready to bridge the critical gap between emergency and professional rescue response.

elke dag moet waardeer.

Community celebrates inclusion

The grounds of Groenberg Secondary School in Grabouw buzzed with laughter and excitement on Wednesday as the community came together to celebrate the International Day for Persons with Disabilities in a vibrant display of inclusion and solidarity.

Organised by Agape Family Ministries and the Overberg Education Department, the Fun Day marked both the international awareness day and the conclusion of Disability Rights Awareness Month, bringing together learners with severe to profound intellectual disabilities for a morning of joy and community connection.

The celebration began with an awareness walk through Grabouw’s streets, designed to spotlight the rights and dignity of people with disabilities. Learners, staff, parents and community partners participated in the

procession, which was made safe through the dedicated support of the Grabouw Traffic Department.

Following the walk, the school transformed into a hub of inclusive activities, with specially designed play and sports programs that prioritised fun, engagement and participation for all. The sight of smiling faces and sounds of excitement perfectly captured the day's mission of celebrating meaningful inclusion. The event also served as a platform to recognise local accessibility efforts through the Western Cape Education Department’s “Spot the Inclusion” initiative. This programme identifies public spaces and organisations that actively promote accessibility and disability inclusion throughout the province.

In a fitting recognition of their commitment to accessibility the

Grabouw Traffic Department received a certificate during the celebration. The department was honoured for implementing oral learner's licence testing, providing crucial access to essential services for individuals unable to complete written examinations. “While certificates and awards added to the celebration, the greatest reward of the day was the joy of seeing children included, supported, and having fun,” organisers noted.. The event served as a powerful reminder that meaningful inclusion extends beyond awareness campaigns and policy initiatives; it requires active community participation and shared responsibility. Grabouw continues to demonstrate that celebrating diversity and promoting accessibility creates stronger, more compassionate communities for everyone.

Open Days help many entrepreneurs grow

Klipheuwel Windfarm in partnership with Theewaterskloof Municipality recently hosted Small Business Supplier Open Days in Caledon and Grabouw to support local entrepreneurs in the Theewaterskloof municipal area to strengthen compliance requirements, which are a challenge for small businesses, as well as unlocking growth opportunities and to build more sustainable enterprises.

TWK’s Executive Deputy Mayor, Cynthia Clayton, who opened both events, emphasised the importance of local entrepreneurship. “Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) are not just participants in our local economy; they are its backbone.” She expressed her gratitude to Klipheuwel Wind Farm, noting this collaboration supported the municipality’s economic development strategy.

The event featured presentations from key stakeholders, including business-tax compliance guidance from the South African Revenue Service, funding and non-financial support from the Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency and home builder registration from the National Home Builders Registration Council. Partici-

pants had the opportunity to ask questions as well as have one-on-one engagements with the various departments and agencies.

Economic Development Specialist for Klipheuwel Windfarm Nonini Makhothe said: “Our target was to reach 150 businesses across the two days and we were thrilled to see more than 230 attending. It was truly encouraging. “We are proud that our partnership with the TWK Municipality stands as a strong example of what can be achieved through successful public-private collaboration.”

Recognising that compliance development is a long-term process the initiative aims to provide sustained assistance to local businesses. By bringing these critical services closer to the community it is easier for entrepreneurs to strengthen and grow their enterprises.

The business suppliers and stakeholder in attendance during the open days will continue providing support to businesses that requested their assistance on the day. The municipality also continually offered support for a variety of compliance issues and this channel will remain active as an extension of the overall initiative.

Participants enjoy fun and games at the school.

Caledon-biblioteek fokus op mans

November was Mansgesondheidsbewusmakingsmaand.

Right to Care, ’n organisasie sonder winsbejag, het standaard mediese observasies soos bloeddruk en bloedsuikertoetse aangebied.

Ds.

Kontak KANSA by: Tolvry: 0800 22 66 22; die KANSA-kantoor by 021 873 6358 of Naomi Philander per WhatsApp by 061 209 9426.

Transforming struggles into tools

When life coach and motivational speaker from Grabouw Anthony September reflects on the 16 years he lost to illness he doesn’t dwell on what could have been. Instead, he sees those dark years as the foundation for the wisdom that now fills the pages of his second book, How to embrace your destiny

“I lost almost 16 years of my life to illness,” September shared with quiet conviction. “But I conquered it with the help of the Lord Almighty. I can therefore relate to many people’s hardships through my experiences. That is why it is easy for me to bring inspiration through speech and writing.”

This personal triumph over adversity has become the cornerstone of his life coaching practice and the driving force behind his latest publication. Where many see obstacles September sees opportunities to connect with clients who face their own seemingly insurmountable challenges.

FROM SETBACK TO SUCCESS

The inspiration for his second book came from observing a common struggle among his clients and readers. “So many people are chasing after their dreams and destinies,” he explained, “but find it difficult to embrace them.

“This is what inspired me to write my second book with the help of God. The overwhelmingly positive response to September’s first book provided additional motivation.

Readers found the material “very helpful, inspiring and useful in their lives,” feedback that automatically inspired him to continue writing.

But between the first and second publications something significant happened; September grew as a coach and person, and here’s why: “With all the coaching information I have published I have enriched myself with even more wisdom and insight.”

PRACTICAL WISDOM FOR EVERYDAY STRUGGLES

His approach to life coaching is refreshingly straightforward, addressing what he identifies as the most common obstacle his clients face: struggling with self-esteem. September has developed what he calls a “life coaching remedy” to stop this “emotional gate crasher” in its tracks.

“The manner in which you get up in the morning will determine how your day will be,” he writes in his book. “Set your mind in such a way for your day, that negativity will fall to its knees.” September’s philosophy challenges the instant-gratification mindset that plagues many people today. “The biggest mistake people tend to make is trying to become successful overnight. When I do life coaching with clients I explain to them that there is a time frame for everything we do and want to achieve. No success is instant.” One of his favourite pieces of advice, which he also dispenses in the book, encapsulates this patient approach to success: “Make your next move while pursuing your dreams with anticipation and use your talent with wisdom.”

BALANCING MULTIPLE ROLES

Juggling writing with his active life coaching practice, along with facilitating and motivational speaking, may seem overwhelming, but September finds it naturally complementary. “The only difference between actual coaching with a client or group and writing is speaking inspiration and writing inspiration.”

His target audience spans all ages,

It’s in the Blood – Suid-Afrikaanse toer.

Ek wou so graag deel daarvan wees. Hy

reflecting his belief that “everyone irrespective of their age struggles with problems and challenges.” September’s job, as he sees it, is “to break the mental wall down in front of clients and make a way for them through their hardships.”

LOOKING FORWARD

Already working on his third book, which will focus on climbing life’s “mountains” that prevent people from reaching their platform of success, he continues drawing inspiration from mentors like Tony Robbins while maintaining his authentic voice. “It is good to learn from others, but to remain authentic and true to yourself,” he emphasised. “This is how I believe we should operate in our talents and gifts.” The most rewarding aspect of September’s work remains witnessing transformation, “to see how my clients move from being broken to a mentally solid person over time.”

His message to readers struggling with their own challenges comes from hard-won experience. “I trust the impact of this book will teach readers to hold onto their dreams, even if it looks as if it won’t materialise. Life looked dark but I nurtured my dreams when it looked as if all was lost. By persevering I became what I always wanted to be.” To his younger self and anyone facing seemingly impossible circumstances he offers this wisdom. “Whatever you are about to face in life is not fatal. And the only limit in your life is the one you set for yourself.” For more information about the book, phone 081 249 1347.

Salt, surf and tides

With the summer holidays rolling into the Overberg, Struisbaai once again becomes the heartbeat of Western Cape recreational fishing. From the iconic harbour wall to the long, wind-swept beaches stretching towards De Mond and the rugged Arniston reefs to the east the November-December period offers some of the most diverse and rewarding angling opportunities on the South African coastline.

THE PLAYGROUND – STRUISBAAI HARBOUR

WALL THE PLACE TO FISH

A favourite for holidaymakers, the harbour wall produces elf, garrick, blacktail and galjoen in season, spotted grunter and – with the right tide – respectable cob. The harbour basin holds shoals of baitfish, drawing predators close enough for light tackle spinning or bait angling. It’s also the safest launch point for skiboats moving to offshore grounds. It’s a great place to take youngsters and teach them the ways of rock and surf angling just as our oupas and dads did for us.

THE PLAAT (BETWEEN STRUISBAAI & DE MOND)

This is surf-fishing heaven. Long sandy stretches, deep gutters and rolling sandbanks make it prime territory for kob (kabeljou), white steenbras, belman and a variety of other species like big galjoen, grunter and stumpnose. Dawn, dusk and night sessions often see the bigger cob patrolling close in. Reading the water –finding a deeper gully or a rip – is the difference between going home empty-hand-

ed or fighting a bus-cob in the dark.

This beach also hosts many rock and surf comps, guys target huge raggies, bronze whaler, the big duckbills and black.rays which frequent this area. A big bloody bait or live mullet is deadly.

SUIDERSTRAND AND AGULHAS ROCKS

West of Struisbaai, the broken reef and shallow points offer pockets for blacktail zebra, musselcracker, and the occasional yellowtail when warm currents press tight to the reefs. strong tackle, abrasion-resistant leaders, and good footwear are essential when fishing this area

ARNISTON/WAENHUISKRANS AND LEDGES

Arniston’s rocky shoreline, sandstone caves, and kelp-fringed ledges – often loosely referred to by locals as the “Mont Arniston side” – create perfect ambush structure. Kob and shad run through here, with early-morning spinning for yellowtail a known producer when the sea is clean and green-blue. The Otta area and the gullies east of the Arniston Hotel are classic summer rock-and-surf marks.

ROCK AND SURF TACTICS FOR SUMMER SUCCESS FOR KOB

Whole chokka, chokka-sardine, live mullet and a.variety of lures.

• Live mullet: Use a long fluorocarbon leader (0.65–0.80 mm) a 6/0 or 8/0 hook and get that mullet into a working gutter, or hole, close to shore.

• For steenbras: Light, fresh white mussel or bloodworm, prawn and so on fished

Matao le Roux (16) spring

vandag in Afrika-Spele

Mitzi Buys

on a low-profile trace. Look for shallow banks where the waves lift and stir the sand.

• For elf/shad: Early-morning spinning with spoons or small plugs works well, especially around the harbour, Arniston reef, and the rocky points at Suiderstrand.

BOAT FISHING – STRUISBAAI’S SECRET WEAPON

Struisbaai is one of the safest natural harbours on the South African coast, giving small craft and charter boats easy access to productive inshore and offshore grounds.

• Inshore (5-20 m): Roman, red stumpnose, garrick and summer shoals of elf.

• Deep reefs: Yellowtail, bonito, all red steenbras and marlin.

• Offshore banks: When conditions align, gamefish like longfin tuna and yellowfin push within reach of local charters; a summertime bonus.

Drifting over reef patches with soft plastics or slow-pitch jigs has become increasingly effective and keeps by-catch mortality low.

CATCH & RELEASE — ESPECIALLY FOR BIG COB

Struisbaai and Arniston are famous for producing massive cob in summer, fish well over a metre long. These big breeders are critical to sustaining populations.

If you hook one:

– Use circle hooks to avoid gut-hooking.

– Keep the fish in the

water for unhooking if possible.

– Support the belly; never hang a big cob vertically.

– Limit air exposure to under 20 seconds.

– Revive by facing the fish into the current until it kicks away strongly.

Returning even one big breeder dramatically improves local stocks and ensures future holiday seasons stay productive.

FINAL WORD

Struisbaai offers a rare combination: safe harbour, long surf, technical reefs and offshore variety, all within a short drive of Arniston’s rugged sandstone coast. Whether you prefer working lures for yellowtail, fishing with big live baits for monster cob or drifting reefs from a boat, the region has something for every angler.

De Mond is a beautiful area to fish and explore with the family; it offers a safe estuary where one can target leeries, grunter and kob, the mouth area is a great spot to fish to, walking left or right leaves the serious angler with endless options. Fishing heaven.
