Three people lost their lives to gun violence in Khayamandi at the weekend.
Stellenbosch police are investigating the senseless killings after two separate shooting incidences, one of which claimed the life of Stellenbosch municipal councillor Xolile Kalipa.
In the first incident police were called out to the scene in Watergang on Friday (2 May) after reports of a shooting.
On their arrival officers discovered the body of an unknown woman in the street. Bystanders from the community informed the police another person had been shot inside the house. “The female was already deceased when members arrived,” said Stellenbosch police spokesperson Captain Nathalie Martin.
“An officer went into the house, where he found an unknown man standing at the door, who admitted that he shot

the two people. The suspect was still in possession of the firearm and the officer removed it from his possession.”
She said the second victim, a wounded man, was rushed to Stellenbosch Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The alleged shooter was arrested and two murder cases are under investigation.
In the second incident, police were called out to Swart Close at 21:26 on Sunday (4 May), where they discovered the lifeless body of 54-year-old Kalipa lying between two vehicles.
FATALLY GUNNED DOWN
Martin said the councillor was shot multiple times and was declared dead on the scene by paramedics. In a statement, Stellenbosch Municipality said Kalipa had been a beloved and deeply respected community leader. “I am devastated by
the loss of Councillor Kalipa,” said Executive Mayor Jeremy Fasser. “He was a dedicated public servant, a voice for the voiceless and a pillar of strength in his community.
“His passion for uplifting our people – especially the youth and women as part of his Community Services Portfolio – was evident in everything he did. We have not only lost a colleague but a friend and true champion of social development.”
Community members described Kalipa as a “humble soul” and see his death as a loss to the Khayamandi community.
He served as a Cape Winelands District Municipality councillor for two terms before his election to Stellenbosch Municipality in 2021.
Antoinette Steyn, Mayor of the Bergrivier Municipality, shared her memories of Kalipa, saying although he could
be a man of few words he was a stalwart.
From across the aisle, Marius van Stade of GOOD added to the calls for an immediate and thorough investigation into the “senseless act of violence”.
Kalipa was known as a soft-spoken, humble and dedicated public servant who held the community at heart.
CASES NOT RELATED
On Monday (5 May) the DA in the Western Cape said it would closely monitor the investigation, urging police to hunt down the killers. “Xolile was ruthlessly gunned down in Khayamandi on Sunday evening,” Tertuis Simmers, DA Western Cape leader, said.
“While the DA strongly condemns the incident, we urge the police to act swiftly to capture the murderers.”
According to Martin, police don’t suspect a connection between the cases. Anyone with information on either incident can contact Stellenbosch police on 021 809 5015 or 082 522 1912.

AANSUIWERINGSBEGROTING2024/2025 EN HERSIENDEDIENSLEWERINGEN BEGROTINGSIMPLEMENTERINGSPLAN2024/2025
The e’Bosch Festival of Talents 2025 is more than just a talent competition – it’s a catalyst for opportunity, fostering job creation, discovering exceptional talent, and nurturing the next generation of leaders who will inspire and uplift their communities.
“We have exciting news for aspiring talents! Finalists in the prestigious e’Bosch Festival of Talents 2025 will receive payment for their participation and also have the opportunity to win cash prizes at the highly anticipated Gala Event on Heritage Day (24 September),” said Marthie Hauptfleisch, music director of the festival.
Marthie Nel Hauptfleisch, music director for e’Bosch Festival of Talents 2025, takes a selfie with some of the 10 chosen finalists for a previous e’Bosch Festival of Talents (back from left) Siba Qoba, Ronaldo van Rhyn, Drovigas Goshai, Robert Hindley (drama tutor), Clayton Appolis, and Lushian de Koker; (front)Hauptfleisch, Leshton-Lee du Plessis and Nevrihelle Arnolds.
This year’s festival is sponsored by the National Lotteries Commission, Wesgro, and the provincial Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.
Along with the monetary incentive in a bid to encourage young talent, entry for school learners is free, making this an unmissable opportunity for the next generation of performers and creatives.
“As much as this festival is about showcasing skills, it is also about empowerment and helping emerging artists carve a path toward success,” Hauptfleisch added.
“Finalists won’t just perform, they will grow. As part of the
experience, they will attend exclusive workshops designed to equip independent artists with essential stage etiquette, industry insights, and strategies for building a sustainable career in the arts.”
Free workshops for aspiring performers will also be held. Aspiring stage performers now have the chance to hone their skills for free in upcoming workshops hosted by the organisers of the e’Bosch Festival of Talents 2025.
Workshops will be held for four consecutive Saturdays starting 10 May. The sessions will cover various disciplines from solo or group singing, hip-hop and gospel, poetry, storytelling, to stand-up comedy.
“The first workshop will be held at the e’Bosch headquarters, 116 Dorp Street, and starts at

09:00. It is mainly for those who want guidance on singing for groups of up to five performers. Participants will receive expert training in stage presence, professional etiquette, and performance technique,” said Hauptfleisch.
The Saturdays workshops will cover singing (10 May), hip-hop (17 May), stand-up comedy (24 May), and storytelling (31 May). Reservations can be made on 061 595 4085 and are restricted on a first-come basis because of limited space. “Although we offer free entry for school learners, those attending the workshops will also be able to waive the R100 entry fee for the competition this year,” Hauptfleisch pointed out.
Preference will be given to entrants from the Stellenbosch and Franschhoek regions and especially from the dorpies such as Cloetesville, Devon Valley, Groendal, Faure, Ida’s Valley, Jamestown, Khayamandi, Klapmuts, Kylemore, Lanquedoc, Pniël, Raithby, Stellenbosch Central, Vlottenburg, Wemmershoek, and the farming communities. The entry deadline for the competition is Saturday 14 June. Contestants need to submit a three-minute demo video (max 50MB, portrait format), which will be reviewed by a panel of judges.

Mkhathala inspiring girls
First female pro boxer from Khayamandi
In the heart of Khayamandi, tucked away in a modest corner of the local sport stadium, a powerful movement is quietly unfolding and champions are being created.
Olwethu Mkhathala is the Khayamandi Boxing Academy’s first-ever professional woman boxer who stepped out on Saturday 19 April. She is also the first professional woman boxer to emerge from the Cape Winelands region.
Mkhathala’s debut as professional boxer marked a historic moment for women in sports, especially in communities where opportunity is often scarce and infrastructure is limited.
Mkhathala is no stranger to the ring; the two-time South African women’s amateur boxing champion boasts multiple accolades to her name.
Her debut professional fight, against a seasoned opponent, served not only as a thrilling contest but also as an inspiring educational experience for younger boxers in her community.
“I didn’t come to the gym for boxing –I was just looking to keep fit. But boxing found me,” she explained.
Her story began when coach Xolisani Thembani recognised her potential and encouraged her to give the sport a try. Seven months later, she stepped into the ring for the first time in Mossel Bay. “Surprisingly, that first fight wasn’t as tough as I had feared. I realised I had what it takes,” Mkhathala recalled.
Her professional debut at the Jackie Brice Boxing Promotion came with a wave of nerves. “It hit me when I saw the crowd – so many people from my community came out to support me.
Olwethu Mkhathala, Khayamandi Boxing Academy’s first pro female boxer, in action in Wynberg.
That was when I knew I was no longer playing small. I had to bring my best.”
Her training regimen is now more demanding than ever. “I train twice a day. It’s no longer about facing boxers I’ve fought before or just three rounds – this is a different level entirely.”
Mkhathala attributes her success to staying focused, embracing sacrifice, and maintaining humility. “Being teachable has been a big part of my growth. In five years, I want to see myself holding titles and inspiring young girls who never thought this was possible.”
At the Simon van der Stel Hall in Wynberg she beat her competitor.
According to the local academy’s coaching and management, it remains a humble facility.
Anyone wishing to support the academy or learn more can reach them via the Facebook page or by sending an email to kayamandiboxingacademy@gmail.com.

A step closer for Stellies FC
Stellenbosch FC’s hopes of qualifying for the CAF Confederation Cup for a second consecutive season were boosted last week after the team recorded back-toback Betway Premiership wins over Chippa United and Golden Arrows.
The Cape Winelands charges earned a 1-0 triumph over Chippa United at Danie Craven Stadium last Wednesday evening (30 April), courtesy of a late goal from Sanele Barns, before claiming a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Golden Arrows in Durban on Saturday afternoon (3 May).
Devin Titus celebrates after opening the scoring during Stellenbosch FC’s 3-0 Betway Premiership win over Golden Arrows in Durban at the weekend.
“I was very pleased with the performance and the result,” head coach Steve Barker said after the win against Arrows.
“We are trying to push to finish as high up the table as we can, so this was a big game for us and an important one to win
away from home.”
The results have propelled Stellies to just one point behind third-placed Sekhukhune United in the domestic league standings, with a game in hand, which is the desired log position to secure qualification to the continental CAF Confederation Cup. Stellenbosch competed in the Confederation Cup for the first time this season and made history by reaching the semi-finals of the competition, narrowly missing out on the final after suffering a 1-0 aggregate defeat to Tanzanian giants Simba SC last month. With the focus now fully on the league, the club has four matches remaining to ensure they represent SA in the continental competion next season, starting with a trip to Pretoria to take on Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versveld on Sunday (11 May).
