Pink Ladies call for a pop of colour, cut for a worthy cause

Locals were offered the opportunity to shave or spray in solidarity to those facing a cancer diagnosis or affected by the life-threatening disease at the Shave/spray-a-thon hosted by the Pink Ladies (pictured) at Mediclinic Vergelegen in Somerset West on Friday (4 October). Many brave participants were supported as they either chopped their manes off, shaved their heads, coloured their hair or sacrificed a bail-out fee in donation to the worthy cause. The hospital benefits from an active Occupational Health team, with Sr Darize Steyn, who has been with the team for 19 years, driving health education and forming the Pink Ladies. This group, consisting of cancer survivors and supporters, organises annual events to raise funds for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) and promote cancer awareness, raising more than R10 000 this year with a focus on breast cancer awareness in October. Suspects casually walk away towards their car

Killed in broad daylight

Yaseen

A wave of shock and outrage has swept through the Somerset West community following the brutal murder of a 42-year-old Lesotho foreign national, who was shot multiple times on his way to work early on Monday morning (7 October) in an apparent hit.

The victim, whose identity has not yet been released, was gunned down in broad daylight on Lourensford Road near the intersection with Main Road during peak morning traffic

around 07:00. He was walking along the sidewalk, carrying a backpack and on his way to work at the time.

According to a police report three armed men opened fire on the unsuspecting man and fled on foot before jumping into a vehicle to escape.

Despite the swift response of emergency services, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

“The motive for this attack is now the subject of a police investigation,” said Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, spokesperson for the provincial police.

Shocked motorists were jawdropped as they passed the scene and many took to social media to express the horror of such an incident.

Some reported that the suspects casually walked towards a car after the shooting and appeared to be calm and professional.

The Somerset West Serious and Violent Crime Detectives are urging the public to come forward with any information that may lead to an arrest. Call Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously.

Body found at railway bridge

Lwandle police are investigating a case of murder after the body of a man was found near the railway line in Strand.

The discovery was made on Friday morning (4 October) and authorities including the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service responded to the incident in the Van der Stel residential area.

According to a spokesperson

for the City’s Fire and Rescue Service, Quinton Leo, firefighting crews responded to an emergency call alerting them to the scene under the railway bridge in Main Road, Somerset Park, around 07:22.

“One fire engine and one rescue vehicle was dispatched to the scene, where an adult male was found deceased,” he said. “The cause of death is unknown. The scene was handed over to police.”

When DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette arrived on

scene armed-response officers of various private security companies, members of Strand Patrol and officials of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) were also present, protecting the crime scene until the police arrived to fine-comb the area as part of their investigation.

Sergeant Mthokozisi Gama, spokesperson for the Lwandle police, confirmed police had responded to the discovery around 08:54.

“The deceased was found

with visible open wounds on the head and was declared dead on the scene,” he said.

The man, whose identity was still unknown at the time of going to print on Tuesday morning (8 October), is believed to be a coloured man estimated to be in his 50s. He was wearing a beige Adidas Tshirt, black jacket and brown trousers.

Lwandle police are urging anyone with information that could end in a breakthrough or help identify the deceased, to

contact the police on 021 845 2060.

Burglaries on the increase

Police are urging homeowners in the seaside communities of Gordon’s Bay and Strand to be alert to an apparent increase in burglaries.

Despite authorities not being able to confirm the spike in incidents in Gordon’s Bay, homeowners believe their communities are being plagued by breakins.

suspected thief breaking into her Broadlands Park home for loot. The alleged perpetrator fled the scene with her jewellery worth an estimated R2 500. The 21-year-old suspect was apprehended and charged with house break-in and theft. He is expected to appear in the Somerset West Magistrates’ Court again on Monday 21 October.

Homeowners have recently taken to social media to sound the alarm on breakins and attempted burglaries around Gordon’s Bay central, Fairview Estate, Mountainside and Gordon’s Bay Village.

On enquiry, a Gordon’s Bay police spokesperson said at this stage only one incident, a break-in which reportedly occurred at a residence located in Augusta Close, Fairview Estate, can be confirmed. The case was being investigated.

“House-breakins, like all other crime, is always a concern for us,” the spokesperson pointed out.

“I am so traumatised by the experience,” said an emotional Van Wyk, “Every time I look at my jewellery box, I start crying uncontrollably at the thought of being so brazenly violated for personal possessions.”

In response to incidents including that of Van Wyk, Strand police have initiated several operations to combat the apparent increase and curb perpetrators lurking, ready to pounce. One of these operations took place on Friday 27 September when Afriforum Strand, alongside security companies including Vetus Schola, Fidelity ADT, AM Security, Gordon’s Bay Security (GB Sec) and Securite Security jumped into crime prevention action, patrolling the railway line along Main Road, Strand, from the N2 bridge to Strand Railway Station.

Strand police spokesperson Warrant Officer Nico Beukes, on the other hand, confirmed burglaries were increasingly surging forth in the neighbouring communities of Strand.

One such victim, Geraldine van Wyk expressed being traumatised by simply knowing that someone had broken into her home while she was asleep on Tuesday 17 September.

Moreover, the 59-year-old resident who recently had her arm amputated, fears what could have occurred if she had awoken while the brazen intruder was in her home. Van Wyk recalled the

Chairperson of the Gordon’s Bay Community Policing Forum (CPF), Edwina Hadfield, in addition to the police spokesperson, urged the community to take the necessary precautions to prevent falling victim to burglaries.

“Residents should ensure that their sliding doors have dead locks on,” she said. “They should not leave doors open and residents with garage doors must check that they are close properly before driving away.”

House partially gutted in Mountainside fire

A vegetation fire along Suikerbossie Drive at Mountainside in Gordon’s Bay, fuelled by the wind on Monday morning (7 October), threatened several homes and partially damaged one house before it was brought under control. According to Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service, they received the call at 10:00 and several firefighting resources responded immediately. “One property was slightly damaged and the fire was brought under control just after 12:00,” he said. At least seven fire engines with 40 firefighters remained on the scene for the rest of the day.

Suspected conman traced, nabbed

The Hawks descended upon Gordon’s Bay last week where they traced and arrested an alleged “romance scammer” who conned a woman in Gauteng out of more than R3 Million.

According to Warrant Officer

Thatohatsi Mavimbela of the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit, a Nigerian man identified as Gabriel Okori (39), appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Monday 7 October, facing charges of romance scamming. He was arrested in Gordon’s Bay on Thursday 3 October by Hawks members attached the the unit, with the assistance of the City of Cape Town Traffice Service and local security company Gordon’s Bay Security (GBSec).

“The complainant in the case alleges

that she met a man online who claimed to be a white South African named Mark Hermanus,” stated Mavimbela.

“The two began communicating on social media and eventually exchanged phone numbers. Over time, ‘Mark Hermanus’ convinced the complainant to lend him money for his sick son’s medical bills. The amount escalated to over R3 million, which the suspect promised to repay but never did.”

The matter was reported to the Hawks, who launched an investigation into the alleged scammer. Through their efforts, they traced the suspect to the Helderberg and identified him. The case has been postponed to Monday 14 October.

“The Hawks’ investigation was aided by the local private security company, GBSEC, which played a crucial role in locating the suspect and his vehicle. GBSEC members tracked the vehicle’s

movements and provided information to the Hawks, who ultimately apprehended Okori in Cape Town”.

Providing some insight into the arrest operation, Heyns de Waal, Chief Operating Officer of GBSEC, said that their assistance was asked by the Hawks.

“GBSEC members picked up the vehicle of interest on Wednesday morning (6 October) and confirmed all movements to the Hawks members. On Thursday morning (7 October), marked and unmarked GBSEC vehicles with the assistance of Gordon’s Bay Saps waited for the vehicle along its suspected route. Just before noon, the vehicle changed his daily routine and was spotted in Strand area. Details of the vehicle of interest was broadcast to all security partners within the Helderberg area, and Strand Neighbourhood watch was also activated for extra eyes and ears in

the search for the vehicle,” he said.

Just minutes later the vehicle was spotted by a GBSEC unit and seconds later security vehicles from GBSEC, Vetus Schola and ADT together with the City’s Traffic Service swooped in from all directions with Strand Neighbourhood Watch members blocking off side roads for if there might be an attempt to escape.

“The Hawks soon arrived on scene and took the person of interest in for detention. After further investigation, all units accompanied the Hawks members to an address in Gordon’s Bay where the members made an astonishing success by arresting the wanted kingpin,” said Heyns.

“We would like to commend the dedication and attitude of these Hawks members together with their security partners in the apprehension of this wanted criminal.”

‘Fietsrowers’ vasgetrek

Barend J Williams

‘A history book with a difference’

Yaseen Gaffar

A new self-published book on the history of Strand has shed light on the fascinating history of the coastal town, revealing a tapestry of stories that span centuries.

The collaborative project, involving dozens of local contributions by community members, comprehensively explores Strand’s past.

One of the key themes explored in the book is an overview of the town’s firsts – the first houses, first businesses and first schools among other firsts. Author Danie Pienaar explains: “A book involving the history of a town is accompanied by a great deal of research, but it remains almost impossible to include the full extent of each period. Each town has historical stages, and each generation will feel emotionally that the period in which it lived in the village is more unique than other periods. Therefore it can be assumed that this book may fall short in some respects. Apologies are therefore offered in advance in case there are names and incidents of interest that do not appear. The purpose of the book is to provide a general overview of the history that is important to the people of the Strand.”

ever since. He was in the first Sub-A (Grade 1) class of the new Lochnerhof Primary School, mentioned in his book. He was also in the first Standard 6 (Grade 8) class in the new premises of Strand High School.

For many years

Pienaar has been in love with Strand and its people. His father worked at Strand Municipality, in the building plans department, for 21 years, and he also worked in the Town Planning Department. After qualifying as a professional architect Pienaar studied at the business school of Stellenbosch University.

He also studied journalism there and wrote for Drive Out outdoor magazine, the Buiteburger and Motorburger. Pienaar was part of the establishment of the most successful GO magazine and had his own column, “Danie sê”, in the Landbouweekblad Pienaar’s love for aviation led to acquiring his PPL licence in 1995, and since then has clocked many a flying mile. He married Susan, a school love, in 1973 and had two daughters. After 40 years he retired his architectural practice in Somerset West.

“The incredible chaos that erupted when it became known I was writing this book is evidence of the value people place in history of their town.”

He elaborated that this book is not an orthodox history of the town. “There is not always detailed discussion of the causes or sequences of events. Rather, it is a book about the establishment of a town, incorporating some history of South Africa during the earlier days of this small village along the False Bay. As much as possible of the available published primary source material was used, and great care was taken to include reliable information. In this sense it is a history book; but it is a history book with a difference.”

Pienaar was born in Southern Rhodesia, where his father was a tobacco farmer. His parents moved to the Strand in 1955, where he has lived

Pienaar said placing the development of Strand is posited against the history of the country, with notes to show this.

“The Strand was not an autonomous place without contact with the rest of South Africa. I hope this book will inspire a sense of pride and belonging among Strand residents, and encourage them to participate in preserving and promoting the town’s rich heritage.”

What’s next for Pienaar?

“I am prompted by buyers to write a book about ‘the characters of the Strand’, which I am sure will involve inputs from the entire community.”

Historian of Khoi honoured by NHC

The work of local historian and wellknown personality Ebrahim Rhoda was recognised recently, when he received a National Heritage Award in the category Ubuntu Honour at the National Heritage Golden Shield Awards.

He was a joint winner in the category along with Dr Janette Deacon, an archaeologist specialising in heritage management and rock art conservation.

The National Heritage Council (NHC) hosts the National Heritage Golden Shield Awards to promote community awareness of the diverse cultural heritages of South Africa and the roles different stakeholders play in protecting, preserving and promoting heritage. It also recognises projects that reflect best practice in protecting, preserving, conserving and promoting heritage.

The NHC has been consistent in honouring ground breakers and pioneers for their selfless roles they played in the management of heritage of the South Africans, especially areas which were not fairly recognised.

In a letter addressed to Rhoda it was noted that “the NHC values the role you played, and continue to play, in heritage management, even after retirement, focusing on the preservation of the marginalised Khoisan heritage.”

Icons such as former President Kaunda of Zambia, President Nelson Mandela, former UN Secretary-General, Boutros Boutros Galli, Prof Muxe Nkondo, to name a few, were honoured with this prestigious Ubuntu Award. Rhoda was recognised for his role in “reviving and writing about the endangered history of the Muslim community, from “slavery to citizenship” as well as the promotion of research focusing on genealogy, in which some families are able to trace their ancestors to slaves coming all the way from what is currently Indonesia.”

In anticipation of this year’s festive season, Captain Charles Riffel, commander of Sir Lowry’s Pass satellite police station, trained community members of Zwelitsha, Chris Nissen Park and Raithby as Community in Blue patrollers on Saturday 5 October. The newly-trained members will assist with crime-prevention patrols in designated hot-spot areas as well as malls. “I am grateful to all the officers for their willingness to ensure a safe-and-secure festive season,” said Riffel.

Taxi drivers are behaving badly

Residents and commuters in the area surrounding Andries Pretorius Street, near the newly constructed Somerset West Public Transport Interchange (PTI), are up in arms over the alleged reckless and dangerous behaviour of taxi drivers operating from the facility. Concerns have been escalating due to a surge in traffic violations, criminal activity and the overall disregard for road safety by these drivers.

The community has highlighted a number of offences committed by the taxi drivers, including ignoring traffic signals, dangerous manoeuvres such as u-turns in the middle of the intersection, sudden stops in heavy traffic, and overtaking on the wrong side of the road are common occurrences.

Some drivers are also accused of blocking traffic when taxis often stop in the middle of the road to load or unload passengers, operating outside the rank and using surrounding streets as well as holding areas, further contributing to congestion and chaos, and excessive noise by playing loud music and continuous hooting.

The community has written letters to urge the City of Cape Town regarding the installation of operational CCTV cameras in Andries Pretorius Street and surrounding areas.

They believe that these cameras could be instrumental in gathering evidence of the taxi drivers’ transgressions and holding them accountable.

“Despite the significant investment of R65 million in the taxi rank, it seems that the City has failed to address the

serious issues caused by the behaviour of the taxi drivers,” said a member of the administrator of the Lourens Street Group, a group of residents who have formed a united front to address these challenges.

“We urge the City to take immediate action to curb this reckless behaviour and ensure the safety of our community.”

The community has called on the City to investigate the matter thoroughly, identify the offending taxi drivers, and impose appropriate penalties.

They also emphasised the need for increased traffic law enforcement in the area to deter future violations.

In response to an enquiry, spokesperson Maxine Bezuidenhout stated that the City’s Traffic Service is aware of the challenges at the interchange.

She stated that in this regard, the Transport Enforcement Unit (TEU) has conducted a number of enforcement operations at the Somerset West PTI and immediate surrounds in the past four months which resulted in the following:

. The impoundment of 35 taxis for operating illegally

. Issuing of 1 629 traffic-related fines

. Conducted 11 enforcement patrols

“In addition to the above, the TEU roving team has also conducted six visits within the past three months resulting in 481 traffic and by-law fines issued,” said Bezuidenhout.

“The TEU will continue to monitor the PTI with another enforcement operation to be conducted this week still.”

Residents are requested to report any suspicious behaviour or criminal activity by phoning the City’s Public Emerg 7700 from a cellphone and 107 from a landline.

Water safety programme ‘resounding success’

Sea Safe NPO, a dedicated organisation committed to ocean and beach safety, recently hosted their annual “Sea and Beach Safety Programme” for a second year with the children of Sir Lowry’s Pass Primary School. The programme, aimed at empowering young boys with essential water safety skills, was held on Monday 23 September at Strand Beach and hailed as a resounding success.

The group of enthusiastic boys from the school gathered at the Strand Lifesaving Club Clubhouse for the programme. Martin Bester, founder of Sea Safe NPO, led an engaging session that combined theoretical knowledge with practical exercises.

“The boys were incredibly keen to learn and listened attentively to the presentation,” Bester said. “We covered a range of topics, including beach safety, lifeguards, waves, tides, sea and beach hazards, rip currents, self-rescue, helping others, emergency numbers,

basic first aid, and CPR.”

To make learning fun and interactive, the programme incorporated a variety of games and activities, such as the “Help-help torpedo rescue” and roleplaying as lifeguards.

“Our programmes are designed to have fun while learning,” Bester explained. “By playing learning games, participants can apply what they have learned from the theory section.”

The Sea and Beach Safety Programme is adaptable to suit all ages, from five to 18 years old. Bester expressed his gratitude to the Strand Lifesaving Club for providing the facilities and equipment, and to Virtual Resources –Workday HR IT Company, for funding the transportation.

“It is a privilege and honour to help those less fortunate than myself,” Bester said. “Hopefully, we can make a difference in these boys’ lives by equipping them with the knowledge and skills to stay safe around the water.”

Help roboteers seize opportunity

A team of budding roboteers who are gearing up for the prestigious FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), a global competition considered to be the Olympics of robotics, is calling on the community to put their hearts in their pockets and help them seize this golden opportunity to fly the flag on the world stage.

Twelve-year-old Joshua Bradfield from Somerset West and his fellow homeschooled mates, Mishca Miller, Thitha Tanda, Daniel Kruger, Rynhardt Visser and Dawid Kruger have set their sights on raising R20 000 to qualify for a robot starter kit required to compete and cover competition expenses. To achieve their target, the amateur robotics enthusiasts who are known as Autonova and led by coach Mynhardt Visser, have championed an online crowd-funding page where keen supporters can contribute monetary donations to help realise their dream to participate in the competition.

The FTC challenges teams of up to 15 members in Grades 7 to 12 to design, build, programme, and operate robots for head-to-head competitions in an alliance format, guided by adult coaches and mentors to develop STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) skills and practice engineering principles. The reusable robot kit can be coded in Java, and teams also raise funds, design and market their brand, and engage in community outreach to earn awards.

The group is currently participating in the Ignite sub-challenge to win a loan robot, which would help cover some competition expenses. This sub-challenge was created by Texpand, last year’s FTC winners, who experienced the difficulty of raising funds for building robots in South Africa. They initiated this competition to

support FTC teams who are serious about the challenge, by providing a few with a loan unit to kick-start their FTC journey.

However, despite Autonova’s significant success having surpassed the requirements to qualify for a loan robot, winning it wouldn’t be enough. The team will require around R40 000 to compete effectively in South Africa and around R200 000 for international competitions, covering local, regional and national competitions, travel expenses, and robot upgrades as challenges become increasingly difficult.

Participating in FTC has provided the children with a comprehensive learning experience beyond just robotics and programming. They have also gained skills in fundraising, business planning, marketing, communication, and teamwork. They have learnt to code, compile, test, understand robotics and logic, develop a business model, build communication channels, set up social media and funding pages, and write marketing pitches. Invaluable knowledge, which gained through participation and with support, they hope to share in schools and communities where robotics isn’t really accessible; and inspire others.

Asked what inspired banding with friend to start a robotics team, Joshua said: “Just the idea that we can spend some more time together, tackling a challenge – something we all love!”

He further provided insight into what each team mate brings to the table, sharing that Mishca is focused and hardworking, and Thitha is competitive and strategic, while Daniel is calm and supportive, Rynhardt is passionate and creative, and Dawid knowledgeable and fun. “I am energetic and idea-driven,” he reckons.

Rap artist celebrates ‘Kaap’

Jamey Gordon

A Somerset West resident who had previously given up his day job to pursue his passion, of being a portraitist, has now returned to music as a rap artist. Fabriazo Langford, also known as F.A.B, recently released new hits including “Lekke innie Kaap,” inspired by the Mother City’s warmth.

He explained his transition from portraitist to musician: “I have worked in both realms for as long as I can remember. Even as a child I was drawing and rapping. Magazine articles once labelled me SA’s fastest rapper. I’ve recorded music with Binnelanders’ Stefan Ludik and 7de Laan’s Sekoati Tsubane.”

He shared that drawing and painting taught him the true definition of art, which he incorporates into his music. Langford fondly recalled learning piano at West End Primary School, which helped him produce music. He draws inspiration from Afrikaans sensation Nicholas Louw, known for his descriptive storytelling.

“In 2021, after my divorce, I wrote ‘Lekke Innie Kaap’. My ex remarked, ‘Fab, you really need to get it together,’ and then added, ‘Want is mos lekke innie Kaap’. That phrase stuck with me, and the song practically wrote itself. The line, ‘Vat ’n drive van Grassy Park tot Strand on Baden Powell Drive’ describes the route I took to visit my children in Somerset West.”

Langford’s other song, “Stellenbossi Princess,” was inspired by his interactions with young people in Stellenbosch. He emphasised the connection between personal experiences and songwriting, stating, “Artists often grapple with emotions and past traumas. Creativity stems from immersing oneself in diverse cultures and personalities.”

Langford’s songwriting process starts with a catchy chorus, which he records

as a voice memo and builds the rest of the song around it. He tests his music by driving around and gauging reactions. For instance, car guards in Stellenbosch danced, and patrons at a bacon spot in Strand enjoyed the music so much the owner offered his restaurant for the music video shoot.

“Lekke innie Kaap,” recorded by producer Shaney J, will be captured in a music video highlighting Cape Town’s beauty and its people. As an independent Langford plans to collaborate with local businessmen to help with the budget. Langford hoped his tracks would become an integral part of Cape Town’s culture. He wanted listeners to hear themselves through his authentic writing and unique flow. Currently collaborating with a Macassar local on another track, he dreamt of working with big names such as Early B and JP van der Spuy. He loves music for its freedom and strives to use it responsibly.

For eager listeners “Lekke innie Kaap” is available for download on Bandcamp. For further details, contact Langford on 078 990 1860.

Berge sets up semi-final clash

Neels du Toit

Helderberg Rugby Club ran out convincing winners against Centurion on Saturday 5 October, scoring six tries in their 49-24 triumph.

The win secures Berge a semi-final berth this Saturday (12 October) in Pretoria against the reigning Gold Cup champions Naka-Bulle, a fully professional team.

In the 8th minute flyhalf Darren Hendricks broke the Centurion line, passed to centre Quiwen Bauman, who in turn sent his 19-year-old winger Edward Terhaar away for the opening try.

In the 15th minute Bauman cut the defence to ribbons to send his fullback Stewart Jacobs over for the second try, converted by Michael Visser (12-0). Centurion responded with two converted tries to take the lead (12-14). Minutes later, Visser regained the lead with a well-taken penalty goal (15-14).

The visitors then ran in a third successive try (15-19). Hendricks set up his inside centre, Lynn-Jay Hendricks, who ran from Centurions’s 22 for his team’s third try, converted by Visser.

In the second half, the visitors seemed to tire with the Berge forwards getting the better of them in the tight passes.

In the 43rd minute Visser succeeded with another penalty, before lock-forward Shane Kennedy scored a magnificent try, converted by Visser (32-19).

In the 61st minute Visser slotted another penalty kick (35-19), and just then Centurion scored their only points of the half with a try (31-24).

In the 70th minute right wing Jodi Koul fielded a defensive kick and linked with Jacobs on his 10-metre line for the fullback to cross and dot down. Visser added the extras (42-24).

In the 76th minute Koul accelerated from his own 22 to score under the posts for Visser’s conversion. Final score: 49-24. This weekend’s semi-final takes place on Saturday (12 October) in Pretoria.
