Reconstruction set to begin in March 2025
THE reconstruction of the Seekoei Estuary Causeway, which connects Aston Bay and Paradise Beach in Jeffreys Bay, is set to commence at the end of March, 2025.
The project, valued at more than R9.3 million, will be primarily funded through the Municipal Disaster Recovery Grant (MDRG). The construction is expected to take approximately five months.
KougaExecutiveMayor,HattinghBornman, expressed the municipality’s commitment to restoringthiscriticallinkforresidentsandvisitors.
“The reconstruction of the Seekoei Estuary
Causeway is a priority project for the municipality. The damage caused by severe storms and rough seas in September 2023 significantly impacted mobility in the area. We are pleased that funding has been secured to rebuild this vital crossing in a manner that enhances its resilience.”
A public meeting is scheduled for March to engage with the Paradise Beach community regarding the upcoming construction project and any potential disruptions.
Scope of Work
The primary objective of the project is to install new precast portal culverts and recon-
struct essential concrete erosion protection measures.
The scope of work includes:
Replacing the existing asphalt surface with plain jointed concrete pavement
Reinstating the concrete erosion protection on the upstream side of the causeway
Installing four (4) sets of 3000mm x 1500mm precast portal culverts
Repairing concrete spalling on the existing precast portal culverts
Conducting general repairs on existing concrete and Armorflex along the Seekoei Riverside.
Reinstating road warning signs and streetlights, subject to budget availability. Bornman emphasised the importance of the project while addressing community concerns. “It is important to note that the causeway will remain a low-water bridge crossing due to infrastructure limitations in the surrounding area. Raising the structure above the 1:100-year flood line, which is currently benchmarked at the Zon-en-Zee apartments, would not be feasible under existing regulatory requirements.”
The Kouga Municipality appreciates the patience and cooperation of residents as this critical infrastructure project is undertaken.

Partnership formed to assist unemployed
RAZAAN PLAATJIES
THE Jeffreys Bay Dorp van Drome, a local organisation dedicated to cleaning and beautifying the town, has joined forces with the Co-op Community Trust to transform the nursery and vegetable garden along Felix Street in Humansdorp, to assist with employment and share surplus produce with local soup kitchens.

Loulita Vosloo, a member of Jeffreys Bay Dorp van Drome, said that they began their Panorama Nursery Initiative across the road from the SAPS K9 Dog Unit along Felix Street in January this year.
She said that the nursery was in an abandoned state.
After working at the nursery for the past few weeks, Vosloo mentioned that it is now covered with cuttings and shade cloth, generously sponsored by citrus farmers.
Further elaborating on the nursery, she said that through the partnership they have formed with the Kouga Municipality Parks and Co-op Community Trust, they will be distributing the plants to beautify various sections within the Kouga area.
“Many beddings will be open to sunlight to start propagating flower cuttings to generate plants for our Kouga region gardens,” said Vosloo.
“We are working hand in hand with all involved to get this nursery operating as a full nursery for Kouga Municipality Parks.”
Fortunately, while the Dorp van Drome team worked on the nursery, the Co-op Community Trust, with help from the Social Employment Fund Programme (SEF) and Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), was eager to assist 1,000 unemployed people in the Sarah Baartman District and began establishing a vegetable garden alongside the nursery.
Lunga Mlangeni from Co-op Community said they currently

have 20 people working in the vegetable garden.
“The workers work daily at the vegetable garden to maintain the beddings, water the plants, and see to the general upkeep of the plants,” said Mlangeni.
He said that through the programme, the workers receive training in plant propagation and regenerative farming to empower them to establish their own gardens where possible.
“The harvest is used for their own consumption and the rest is sold to help develop the nursery,” said Mlangeni.
“The goal of the vegetable garden and nursery is to provide training and a hub of knowledge for the SEF workers and the greater local small-scale farming communities. We focus on developing garden managers who will learn the skills of entrepreneurship, rather than creating dependency
on soup kitchens.”
He further said that they would greatly appreciate donations of seedlings and seeds to propagate more vegetables.
While a large focus is on entrepreneurial skills development, Mlangeni said that they donate to soup kitchens when there is a surplus of vegetables.
He further added that they would greatly appreciate a donation of a fridge to store their vegetables, ensuring they remain fresh.

Rare elephant seal moulting stuns beachgoers
MARCIA BOYENS
A RARE visitor made waves on Eersterivierstrand when a Southern elephant seal emerged from the ocean to moult — a process that left onlookers stunned. Southern elephant seals are rarely seen in South Africa, but they do occasionally visit the coast for their month-long shed.
Elephant seals undergo a unique moultingprocessonceayear, shedding an entire layer of skin and fur in what is known as a “catastrophic moult.” This process can take up to a month, during which time the seal must remainonlandtocompletetheshedding
and regeneration of its coat. Seeing this in South Africa, and specifically on Eersterivierstrand, is extremely rare.
To ensure the seal’s safety, the local National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) cordonedofftheareawithasignreading, “Seal Resting – Absolutely No Entry.” Marine experts also checked on the animal, collecting samples and tagging it for monitoring. Observers noted that the seal had a minor chest injury, but it did not seem to hinder its natural process.
Beachgoers Karla Moore, Iloné MaraisandJohanViljoenwereontheirway to swim at Blougat when they were met with this unexpected sight. “We were heading down to the beach when

wesuddenlynoticeddangertape.Curious, wepeekedovertheduneandwere completely shocked to see a massive seal resting there!” said Moore. Initially unsure of what was happening, the group quickly turned to Google for answers.
“At first, we thought the animal was either sick or possibly giving birth. But aswewatched, werealizeditwasactually going through a moulting process. It was a terrifying yet incredible experience — what were the chances of witnessing something like this?”
After spending several weeks on land, the seal completed its moult on Saturday afternoon and returned to the ocean, leaving behind only a patch ofshedfurandanunforgettablememory for those who witnessed its visit. With elephant seal populations dwindling, moments like these serve as a reminder of how important it is to protect and respect wildlife. And for thoseluckyenoughtohaveseenit, this unexpected encounter with nature was nothing short of magical.

Cricket club shines at corporate cricket league
RAZAAN PLAATJIES
THE Jeffreys Bay Cricket Club has triumphed as the 2024/2025 Heatherbank Corporate Cricket League Fifth Division Spring League Champions after bowling out their opposition, Gqeberha-based business, Aspen, for 123 runs in 19.3 overs on February 22 in Gqeberha.
As previously reported, the Jeffreys Bay Cricket Club was founded in September 2023 by Ruan Thomas after he noticed the need for a cricket club that provides people of all ages aplatformtoshowcasetheirtalentsatnocost.
The cricket club currently has 55 members, of whom 28 are actively involved.
They also make use of the cricket pitch at Victory Christian School, where they practise on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Since the start of 2024, the club has participated in the Heatherbank Corporate Cricket League in Gqeberha multiple times and recently won the summer finals against Aspen.
Despite establishing the cricket club only one year ago, Thomas said that they were fortunate to receive an invitation to participate in the esteemed Pineapple Tournament, set to take place in Port Alfred from March 8 to 15, which they gladly accepted.
With fewer than two weeks before the tournament begins, he said that they have been embarking on various fundraising initiatives and have raised R13 000.

“After winning the toss and electing to bowl first,we bowled out the opposition for 123 runs in 19.3 overs,”said Thomas. He mentioned that chasing a target of 124 runs turned out to be more challenging than they had expected, but they successfully reached the target with just one ball remaining.

Jenewer, ‘tonic’en Suzuki Swift
WILLEMIEN GREEN
verbysteek, iets waarvoor ek gewoonlik baie versigtig is.

THE Absa Run Your City Series is proud to welcome global running sensation, Adriaan Wildschutt, to compete on South African soil at the Absa Run Your City Gqeberha 10K on Sunday, April 13, 2025.
As one of the world’s top athletes, his participation is a significant boost for South African road running, local sports, and the prestige of the Absa Run Your City Series.
Following a breakthrough year in 2024, Wildschutt, who holds four national track records, has announced his intention to pursue the SA 10km recordattheAbsaRunYourCity Gqeberha 10K.
Hisconfidenceintargetingthe 27:35 SA record set by Precious Mashele at the inaugural Absa Run Your City Gqeberha 10K in 2023 is well-founded. The American-based top runner produced no fewer than six South African records last season including 3000m (7:32.99), 5000m (12:56.67), and 5000m indoors (12:56.76), as well as a new national 10 000m mark of 26:50.64 which accompanied a memorable 10th place finish in the Olympic final at the Stade de France last August.
“I’m looking forward to participating at the Absa Run Your City Gqeberha 10K,” confirms Wildschutt. “I chose the race because I hear that it’s a fast course and I remember the South African record being set there. I love competing, and sometimes that leads to records. I appreciate and respect Precious’s record and would never undermine the quality it took to set that record. However, I am aiming to break the South African record in Gqeberha and hopefully make it a lasting one.”
Asoneofthemostsought-after track and road running stars in the United States, where he has been based for the past seven years, and a prominent contender on the lucrative European circuit, his decision to kick off his road running season on home soil speaks volumes.
“To be honest, the race in Gqeberha lines up best with my schedule. Training has been going very well in the last five weeks. We were able to continue to train at a high level. However, thenextsixweeksaregoingtobe critical leading up to some track races and the 10km in Gqeberha.
I am very excited about that, and Iamhopefulthateverythingwill go as planned and I can perform at the best level I can.”
Performingatthehighestlevel against world-class competitors on African soil is not the only reason the Ceres-born SA 5000m champion chose Nelson MandelaBayoverotherdestinations.
Having run a number of 10km

road races in the Western Cape as a junior before moving to the US to study, 26-year-old Wildschutt reveals that through his brother, Nadeel, who ran 28:07 at the Absa Run Your City Durban 10K last year, he has been following the Absa Run Your City Series from across the Atlantic and was more than ready to grab the opportunity to take part when it came. Wildschutt confirms that he spoke with his brother about the series, who had nothing but praise for the entire organisation.
“I was stoked to hear about that, which is why I wanted to compete in it in an attempt to do well,” he adds. “I also want to try something different and go to a different city I have never been to before. Racing in South Africa isunique.Therunningcultureis different. I love the food afterwards and the vibe that follows the race. I feel a whole lot of people know me better and I can share a great experience with all of them.”
“We are excited to welcome Adriaan Wildschutt to the Absa Absa Run Your City Series in 2025,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa Absa Run Your City Series.
“His exceptional performance at the Olympics in France last August had South Africans on the edge of their seats — a proud moment for the nation. Setting a new national 10,000m record of 26:50.64 and finishing 10th on the world stage showcased his incredible talent. Adriaan brings excitement and quality racing to the series. We firmly believe that notonlyisanewSA10kmrecord within reach but there’s also a strong possibility it could be shattered convincingly. We’re equally excited to see how the rest of the field responds to his record-breaking ambitions on race day. Spectators can expect top-tier competition and numerous standout performances. We look forward to witnessing the action unfold in Gqeberha as Adriaan pushes the boundaries of road running on home soil.”
