These include the physical presence of educational institutions, government departments, skills development agencies and employers from whom visitors will receive career-related resources.
A key feature of the Kouga Working World Exhibition is the Career Guidance Café, which offers learners free access to personal career support and an online career assessment via laptops.
Based on the inputs provided in the assessment, the system will provide users with an immediate report on suggested career paths, learning options and specific jobs aligned with their values, academic performance and preferences.
Other features include the participation of the Department of Labour and Employment's Mobile Careers Centre, the presence of the Kouga Local Municipality's directorates and a full display of vocations in the South African Police Services.
Exhibitors include TVET colleges, universities, skills providers, finance institutions and employers.
An additional resource that will be made available to visitors at
the Kouga Working World Exhibition is a Career Guidance Booklet that contains essential information about planning a career.
The initiative is endorsed and supported by organised business, the Eastern Cape Department of Education and a range of corporate and civic organisations.
The Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman said the inaugural Working World Exhibition in the region "underscored Kouga Local Municipality's commitment to empowering youth and shaping a brighter future for all."

It also fosters collaboration among academia, business, society, and government, all while strengthening the socio-economic fabric of our community."
"Career planning is the foundation of job creation, and Kouga Local Municipality is proud to champion this cause. By making this an annual event, we reaffirm our dedication to inspiring career thinking and driving meaningful change in our region."

THE Sarah Baartman District Municipality in partnership with Kou-Kamma Municipality held a sod-turning event in Thornham to mark the official start of the Informal Settlements Upgrade project in the area.
The Sarah Baartman District Municipality has been appointed as implementing agents by the Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements (ECDHS) as part of their National Upgrading Support Programme (NUSP) to aid municipalities to upgrade informal settlements.
Part of the sod-turning event was the introduction of the project managers, Lilitha Consulting Engineers, and the contractors, TTR Contractors.
This project includes refurbishment of the existing water reservoir, installation of toilets, and implementation of solar power.
Each unit will receive a wheelie bin and standpipe water connection.
The project also covers skip bins for solid waste management, upgrading of two gravel roads, maintenance of the access road, and installation of solar streetlights.
In attendance were Kou-Kamma Municipality Mayor Samuel Vuso, SBDM Executive Mayor Deon de Vos, SBDM Portfolio Councillor for Community Services and Infrastructure Development Athi Diniso, Kou-Kamma Ward Councillor Sikiwe Nomathamsanqa and municipal officials from both the
Kou-Kamma Municipality and the District.
The consultants conducted a cadastral survey to support the Municipality's future development plans in the area.
Although Thornham is a privately owned area, the community residing in this area needs basic services as they currently do not
have access to water and sanitation.
After extensive consultation with the Thornham Management Board and community members, the project is set to officially begin. The project will also provide job opportunities to unemployed community members and business opportunities to local SMMEs.

AFTER waiting many years for a home to call his own, Poto Dyantyisi from Patensie recently celebrated his 111th birthday in the comfort of a warm home surrounded by his family and friends.
As previously reported, Poto moved into his son Joseph's shack in 2014.
However, he faced various challenges since the shack was cold in winter and very hot in summer.
As a result, Poto's health deteriorated, leading to many health complications.
Finally, in 2024, shortly after his 110th birthday, he opened the door to his fully furnished home.
The new home was built through the Department of Human Settlements' Destitute and Vulnerable Groups Programme, and formed part of a collaboration between the department, Kouga Municipality, and the Sarah Baartman District Municipality.
Since moving into his new home in July 2024, Joseph said that his father's lifestyle and health have improved greatly.
highlight being a visit from Sarah Baartman District Municipality Executive Mayor, Deon de Vos.
He said that De Vos checks up on his father regularly and genuinely cares for his well-being. "We appreciate Mayor De Vos for his assistance and concern for my father," said Joseph.
"It is great to see that the Sarah Baartman District Municipality is looking after older people."
Since he has had to leave work to take care of his father full time, Joseph said that they appreciate all the assistance they have received thus far.
He said that while his father now lives in a safe and happy environment, their biggest concern is the dirt road from the main road leading to their home.
Joseph said that the state of the road makes it difficult to transport his father to the nearest healthcare facility during rainy periods when his health deteriorates.
He added that ambulances often struggle to reach their home when the roads become muddy after rainfall.
THE non-profit organisation, the Abancedi Community Development Centre, was established in July 2024 in Ebumnyameni, an informal settlement in Ocean View, Jeffreys Bay, to assist the underprivileged with meals twice a week using produce from their vegetable garden.
Now, nine months later, to accommodate their rapidly growing initiative, they plan to expand their garden perimeter to further assist the community.
As previously reported, the Abancedi Community Development Centre was founded by Pastor Sakhekile Mbili to assist the many unemployed people in his community with food to eat.
Since July 2024, the organisation has continued to feed at least 50 people once a week.
"Instead of sitting and doing nothing, we have managed to change the situation in our community," said Mbili.
To ensure that they have the necessary ingredients to sustain the soup kitchen, the organisation began planting vegetables in their garden.
According to Mbili, the vegetables harvested from their garden serve dual purposes: supplying ingredients for the soup kitchen while also generating income
"Through the vegetable garden, we can put food on the table for our families and assist the community through our soup kitchen," said Mbili.
He said that the garden has expanded rapidly in the last nine months, and they now plan to expand the garden further to assist more people.
"The garden developed so quickly, and many people are dependent on the vegetables from the garden. Our biggest challenge now is that we do not have enough space to plant more vegetables," said Mbili.
To expand their vegetable garden, he said that they are in need of donations of wire, barbed wire, poles, and seeds.
Additional assistance given to the community by the organisation includes pursuing training opportunities for unemployed individuals, with the aim of helping them secure employment or embark on entrepreneurial ventures to provide for their families.
They also assist orphaned and vulnerable children with registering for birth certificates at the Department of Home Affairs and offering clothing to those in need.
For more information or to contribute towards the NPO, contact Pastor Sakhekile Mbili at 068 773 6895 or email Mbilisakhekile20@gmail.
"When we were staying in the shack we really battled when it rained and when it was cold, but now my father is living in much better conditions," said Joseph.
"Even though he is getting older, he is doing well."
Joseph further said that his father spent his birthday with family and friends with the
"I become stressed whenever it starts raining because my father's health deteriorates in wet weather. I never know when an emergency will arise and he needs to go to the hospital," said Joseph.
He said that he hopes the roads will be upgraded soon to improve accessibility to their home.
THE Kouga Conference Centre was abuzz with energy as Global Leadership Consultants (GLC), in collaboration with the Kouga Windfarm Community Development Trust (KWF CDT), hosted a groundbreaking Business Masterclass aimed at empowering local Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs).
This transformative event brought together business owners, industry experts, and government representatives, all committed to fostering economic growth within the Kouga Local Municipality.
The overwhelming turnout reflected the hunger for knowledge and support among local entrepreneurs striving to scale their businesses, navigate compliance, and unlock funding opportunities.
The masterclass featured an impressive lineup of expert speakers from key institutions that play a pivotal role in shaping the province's economic landscape.
Attendees gained first-hand insights from:
• Eastern Cape Rural Development Agency (ECRDA) – Discussing funding avenues and support for rural businesses.
• South African Revenue Service (SARS)
– Clarifying tax compliance and financial best practices for SMMEs.
• Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) – Highlighting available enterprise development initiatives.
• Standard Bank South Africa – Sharing key strategies for financial management and business growth.
These sessions provided SMME owners with practical tools and expert guidance to overcome challenges, secure funding, remain tax-compliant, and thrive in a competitive market.
Empowering local entrepreneurs for a sustainable future
Speaking at the event, Luphumlo Joka, Director at GLC, emphasised their mission to empower entrepreneurs by equipping them with essential business acumen and leadership skills.
"This masterclass is about more than just information-sharing; it's about creating opportunities, building confidence, and fostering a resilient entrepreneurial ecosystem within the Kouga region," said Joka.
The KWF Community Development Trust, known for its commitment to socio-economic upliftment, echoed these sentiments, reaffirming its dedication to ensuring sustainable growth for local businesses.
Siyabulela Zondani, Projects Operations Officer at the Kouga Windfarm Community Development Trust, said, "Our partnership with Global Leadership Consultants is dedicated to empowering local business owners and entrepreneurs with the support and skills they need to thrive."
"Through this initiative, we are helping entrepreneurs access funding opportunities, identify market entry points, and refine their business models with essential enterprise development skills. We are excited about the project's impact and are
committed to delivering high-impact programmes aligned with Local Economic Frameworks."
A milestone moment for Kouga's SMME sector
The Kouga Municipality recognises that inclusive economic growth can contribute to the alleviation of existing poverty and inequality, as well as the improvement of livelihoods for current and future generations.
Anene Jonck, the Local Economic Development Manager at the Kouga Local Municipality, said, "Through improved collaboration with external stakeholders, in both the formal and informal private sector, as well as public sector, Kouga is committed to realising its objectives for the improvement of inclusive economic growth, reduced unemployment, and reduced inequality through dynamic social mobility."
This impact-driven initiative underscores the power of strategic partnerships
in transforming local economies.
By bringing together public and private sector leaders, this masterclass has set the stage for tangible progress, ensuring that SMMEs in the Kouga Municipality are equipped to expand, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to job creation and economic development.
Laurentia George, a Takeaway business owner from St Francis Bay, described the SMME Business Funding Masterclass as a truly fruitful and productive session.
"The stakeholders provided valuable insights on how to propel our business objectives, navigate compliance requirements, and effectively approach business funding applications. I am incredibly grateful to the organisers for this empowering opportunity," said George.
As the event concluded, attendees left inspired, informed, and ready to implement key learnings — a true testament to the power of collaboration in unlocking the full potential of local entrepreneurs.

THE 2025 SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees will be held in the town of Kirkwood after a new venue became available. Earlier, it was announced that the Kirkwood Wildsfees would be moving to the Mayogi Bomas on the R75 from the Kirkwood High School grounds owing to restrictions on the sale of liquor imposed by the Eastern Cape Department of Education.
A media release stated that it would now be held on the grounds of The Co-op in Kirkwood.
The annual Kirkwood Wildlife Game Auction will continue to be held at the Mayogi Bomas, on Friday, June 27.
"It is great news that we have found premises in Kirkwood to hold the Wildsfees," says festival director Jenni Honsbein.
"We are extremely grateful to The Co-op, which has its headquarters in Humansdorp, for making their grounds in Kirkwood available for 2025.
"Festival-goers who have booked accommodation in Kirkwood will be able to walk to the venue as they did to the school," she
adds.
The 2025 SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees will feature over 20 national artists on the giant ECPTA stage, host 300 specialist stalls, and feature horse and working dog demonstrations, among its many activities included in the entrance fee.
It will be held from Friday, June 27 to Sunday, June 29.
To mark the occasion and the 100th anniversary of Afrikaans being accepted as an official language, a free concert will be hosted on the Thursday evening, June 26.
MARSHALL Mzili, a long-serving mechanic for Kouga Local Municipality, retired on March 31, 2025 after dedicating 25 years to the institution.
The 58-year-old, originally from Tsitsikamma, attributes his passion for mechanics to his upbringing under his uncle, Ernest Mzili, who instilled a love of the trade in him from a young age. Mzili's journey to the municipality began with stints as a driver for a liquor outlet and a taxi driver for five years. On November 11, 1999, he joined the former Jeffreys Bay Municipality as a workshop assistant.
In those early years he wore many hats –assistant mechanic, tyre fitter and cleaner – and often worked challenging hours. He was later promoted to mechanic, contributing significantly to the maintenance of the municipality's fleet.
Health challenges prompted Mzili to retire earlier than planned. A three-month hospitalisation made him realise he was beginning to make mistakes at work, which could jeopardise the safety of others.
“I loved my job but could not live with myself if any mistakes I made harmed my
co-workers,” he shared. Mzili now plans to focus on farming at his smallholding in Tsitsikamma, where he raises cows and goats and is constructing a pigsty.
Although excited about this new chapter, he admits he will miss his job and colleagues, emphasising the crucial role of the fleet department in ensuring service delivery.
As a parting message, Mzili urged his colleagues to continuously learn from their superiors and never hesitate to ask questions.

THE Jeffreys Bay Bridge Club invites all interested individuals to join the club. Those who would like to learn how to play the card game can join and will be trained by Letje Smit.
"We would also like to see 'old' bridge players join. Some people might have played many years ago, perhaps as students. Others might have played regularly and stopped.
We would welcome them. We also encourage small groups already playing, to join us," says Letje. The club currently has over forty members and meets every Monday at 13:00 at Jeffreys Rus. Letje said, "If there is enough interest from working people, we will start an evening play session. We would like to expand the club. The more the merrier.
Niemand anders ken jou storie so goed soos jy self nie.
As mens eers begin, raak jou gedagtes los.
more as it is more fun!"
The game is for everyone who wants to keep their brain active and enjoy the social aspect. No equipment is needed to join. Once a month members have a social event for those who celebrate their birthdays. Other social events include Valentines, Solstice, Battle of the sexes, and year-end celebrations.
Interested players are welcome to contact Christel Vosloo at 082 925 0176.
Daar word dikwels gewroeg of jy jou groot geheime moet insluit, al dan nie. Dis gelukkig jou keuse. Dink maar hoe lekker lees ons aan outobiografieë soos The Long Walk to Freedom , Whitey Basson, Ingrid Jonker, Hykie Berg en talle ander.

Hi friends, meet Stefan. He is 22 years old and lives in Jeffreys Bay South Africa.
He tragically fell ill in September 2024 and was hospitalized from October. He was diagnosed with tuberculosis meningitis. His health deteriorated rapidly. He had multiple strokes in all areas of his brain with the biggest lesions in his right temporalis and cerebellum. His left lung collapsed and also had cardiac arrest. He was in a coma for 2 months and survived all this trauma. But with extensive brain damage, he is paralysed and has lung complications.
‘n Pragtige hamper is beskikbaar
Rocky: Ons ikoniese gelukbringer
Feesgangers moes vooraf kaartjies koop volgens ‘n program. FOTO: VERSKAF

eter Pretorius, sou kon leer.
