The Gootvlei Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein has continued its community project of revamping desks deemed as waste and getting them back into classrooms. The latest efforts saw several refurbished desks reintroduced at the Nzame Primary School in Bloemfontein
This is thanks to the basic artisan skills of two male inmates, who used their craft to revamp more than 100 desks
To perform these repairs, the pair used skills they had acquired at Gootvlei
The inmates’ ability is evident in the restoration of the desks to their original condition
The desks were returned to the school ahead of the start of the third school term on 22 July
Sepheto Skosana, headmaster of Nzame, said the two inmates’ contribution was far-reaching in enabling learners to continue learning and also avoided 100 desks being wasted He presented a certificate of appreciation to each
The correctional centre is involved in school programmes as part of a community programme, while inmates participate as part of the second chance programme aimed at reuniting them with the community as part of a life-changing initiative

Local taxi operators, specifically those operating in sedan vehicles in the greater townships of Bloemfontein’s metropolitan area, are taking steps to support needy learners through a self-initiated partnership project called the 4 +1 Family Help Centre
They have partnered with the BP Action filling station in Bochabela to demonstrate that taxi operators can be a force for positive change in the community
The first act came in the donation of brand-new jerseys to a group of 60 learners at the Maranga Primary School in Bloemfontein on 1 August The school is the first beneficiary of this charity initiative, intended to also aid community centres by rendering essential services towards children
“Taxi owners, including operators, are known for just generating income and wanting support from the community,” said Dira Mohlabayi, BP Action manager and spokesperson
“We started this joint initiative to change the mindset and, in the same vein, challenge other
owners and operators to do the same
“We decided on helping school-attending children as the best possible way of contributing to the same community on which the taxi industry depends, be it in terms of the public boarding taxi’s to fulfil their personal needs or commute to work”
Mohlabayi said the filling station decided to support the specific group of taxi operators involved in the initiative after being inspired by a few operators who led by example
“They contributed, daily, a certain amount towards ensuring the project gets the opportunity to take off, following the first meeting where the idea was birthed It is encouraging and heart-warming to help the children”
Mohlabayi said the jersey donation was necessary to help children fend off the winter cold
Mava Jeje, headmaster of Marang, expressed joy due to the goodwill gesture
“We are delighted, and also thankful, for receiving the donation of jerseys, particularly this group of learners whose parents cannot afford it due to them being unemployed The number of learners facing this plight are high,” said Jeje

In less than seven months, after a fundraising campaign, the Westdene Park is now ready to visit
Michael Deutschmann, manager of the Westdene Neighbourhood Association (WNA), says close to R300 000 was donated by more than 40 individuals and businesses to drive this project
“When we started out, we removed more than 500 bags of refuse from the area, ” he explains The area, which is part of the Mangaung Metro’s green zone, is being managed through the metro’s Adopt a Park policy by the Friends of Westdene Park
After a huge clean-up, work started in April to have a fence of 700m erected around the perimeter of the 10ha park
Three access-control gates were also installed, and a parking area at one of the gates was paved thanks to the input of residents living close to the park
“We are so thankful to everyone who pitched in to make this dream come true,” Deutschmann says
“Whether it was with a donation of R500 or R20 000, each one helped”
He said it was not only residents of Westdene who contributed, but also residents living on the edge of the park in Dan Pienaar, especially those in Commandant Senekal Street and Captain Dawson Street
“The park is beneficial to residents who live in the vicinity of the park, as they can make use of this outdoor space, ” Deutschmann says Importantly, the area being access-controlled creates a much safer area for people who reside around the park, as well as visitors the park Deutchmann explains there used to be people

Since the fence was completed, a walkway was cut from the gate and parking in General Hertzog Street, along the bottom of the koppie, to the fence in Albrecht Street Deutschmann says they are working on more routes
“Our long-term plan is to reintroduce tortoises, as well as antelope,” he says On 1 August, the Friends of Westdene invited residents to donate aloes to be planted on the corner of Brill and Albrecht Street
“We would love for more donations of aloes for our beautification project of this corner, ” Deutschmann invites Membership for Friends of Westdene Park, which entails access to the park, costs R200 annually Non-members pay R500 Other options are available Call Deutschmann on 071 348 5353
A Bloemfontein man found guilty of drugging and raping a teenage girl has received a life sentence. The Bloemfontein Regional Court’s Sexual Offence unit sentenced Thabo Mabote (34) to 25 years’ direct imprisonment on 5 August
The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was 13 years old at the time of the incident
It was revealed that Mabote was known to the victim, as they lived in the same area, the Phase 7 informal settlement, and the victim used to buy vegetables from him
On 13 March 2022 the victim, together with her friend, visited Mabote at his place of residence He reportedly offered them crystal meth to smoke
State prosecutor Azola Key said the victim presented a compelling testimony, detailing the horrifying account of the ordeal of her drugging and rape over several days
“The accused convinced her to smoke the drugs, telling her that a lot of people smoke it and that nothing would happen to her if she tried,” said Key
“The victim, who had refused smoking the drugs, succumbed to his pursuance to smoke the substance
“The victim testified she felt dizzy after smoking the drugs and then she woke up in bed next to the accused, and that her friend was no longer at his place
“Mabote continued giving the victim drugs
and, in the event, undressed her
“The victim pleaded with the accused to not have sexual intercourse with her without her consent and in the state she was in, being under the influence of drugs
“Despite this plea, the accused proceeded to undress her and raped her,” said Key
Evidence revealed that Mabote had locked the victim inside his shack dwelling for a few days, preventing her from escaping
Key said the accused had repeatedly drugged and raped the girl
“The mother of the victim reported her child missing to the police, who then informed members of the community to assist in locating the child”
Key said what was terrifying, was Mabote playing the role of an innocent man during the search for the victim
“He also gave his assurance to the mother of the victim that he would assist in locating her
“The victim managed to escape from Mabote’s place after noticing he had left She ran to her mother and informed her of what had happened”
Key confirmed Magistrate Mxolisi Saliwa had ordered that Mabote’s details be included in the National Register for Sex Offenders, in addition to him serving a life sentence and being declared unfit to possess a firearm
Mabote’s sentencing was the culmination of probing by Sgt Sandisiwe von Willing of the Mangaung Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit
Evidence gathered led to this successful prosecution by Key, while the trial and sentence proceedings were presided over by Saliwa

The Legal Practitioners Fidelity Fund (LPFF) will be extending its service to the Free State through its community outreach programme in Welkom
This is a statutory body under the Legal Practice Act protecting South Africans from financial loss due to theft by, or the dishonesty of, attorneys
The LPFF leadership, with Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Motlatsi Molefe at the helm, will on Saturday, 16 August, address members of the community on the objective of the programme The proceedings in the Thabong Community Hall are set to start at 10:00 and continue until 12:00
“The spotlight will be on legal accountability and the LPFF’s unveiling of a bold new initiative to empower communities and tackle legal misconduct,” said Molefe
He confirmed that the programme is kept in motion due to incidents of attorneys engaging in misconduct and the defrauding of clients
“Since 2018, there have been 57 attorneys who were disbarred for misconduct, with some stealing
between R1,5 million and R5 million from clients
These abuses erode faith in the legal system
“The LPFF is raising awareness, publicly, transparently, and community by community”
The event in Welkom was part of a national awareness drive to educate the public on how to report dishonest attorneys and claim compensation when money or property is stolen, said Molefe
He said the entity aims at highlighting legal accountability in South Africa
“Instances of attorney misconduct have dominated recent headlines, but the stories that matter most often remain unheard those of ordinary community members seeking justice and recourse ”
A total of 32 attorneys in the Free State are investigated by the Legal Practice Council (LPC), the body regulating the affairs of, and exercising jurisdiction over, all legal practitioners These practitioners are suspended from practice, and the number exceeds that of previous years
The term of reference is from August 2022 until May this year Adverse findings saw 15 “ungovernable” candidates struck off the roll
Matshidiso Lebona has proven her leadership qualities in becoming the first woman ever to lead the Bloemfontein-based supporters branch of premiership giants Orlando Pirates FC.
Being elected as chairperson at the annual general meeting (AGM) in March saw her break the long-standing tradition of men chosen to serve in this position
Lebona, also referred to as “Stimela” , succeeds Pule Pitso, one of the founding members of the Buccaneers supporters branch founded in 1972 in Phahameng, Bloemfontein making it one of the oldest in the Free State Pitso still serves, dutifully, in the executive committee
Lebona started at the bottom and gradually rose to the top
“I joined the branch in 2010 After having become a member of the executive team, I held different positions, such as that of deputy secretary and secretary,” said Lebona
“I am very happy to say that I am the first lady to serve as the chairperson I was not surprised that the members elected me ”
Lebona believes that serving on the branch’s executive committee was beneficial in her gaining the
knowledge to serve in her current position
Other women serving on the branch’s executive team are: Tselane Ntsebe, treasurer; Ntebaleng Lechute; and Dimakatso Liketso
The men serving on the committee include: Phantsi “Billy” Samuel, deputy chairperson; Tebogo Moremi, secretary; Mosiea Itumeleng, deputy secretary; Rasephei Remaketse, president; and Monti Blom, public relations officer
Lebona proudly revealed that she grew up supporting Pirates the second oldest football club in South Africa behind the Durban-based AmaZulu, which was founded in 1932, according to football history
She said she credits her late father, Julius “Stimela” Ntholeng, and his passion that inspired her to become a die-hard supporter of the black and white Buccaneers
“Stimela is the nickname of my late father I inherited the name and am keeping it alive as a staunch supporter of Pirates We are all supporters of the Orlando Pirates in my family,” said Lebona
In terms of South African history, Stimela is a nickname referencing to coal trains, which particularly transported migrant mine labourers in the country It is reported this was coined during major influx of mine labourers in South Africa
The concept of a police officer dedicated to pursuing justice for all victims of crime, is exemplified by individuals like Sgt Badiri Bessi Nthoba
She is among the women in blue, of the SAPS, who are being celebrated in August, declared Women’s Month
This month recognises, among many other things, the strides made by professional women in terms of inspiring positive change in their respective fields
Nthoba is attached to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit in Mangaung In the team of 31 investigators, she is one of three dedicated to investigating serial rape cases
The officers in this unit have established a reputation of going beyond the call of duty to protect vulnerable groups, which include women and children
Being at the coalface of police operations, Nthoba has the courage to uphold the rule of law
As a mother of two, she is relentless in her pursuit of justice for victims of sexual offences
Nthoba makes her presence felt through contributions to the effective operation of the Mangaung FCS unit
Evidence thereof is her contribution in collectively securing 20 life sentences and placing 152 sexual offenders behind bars in the past year alone
A recent success includes her and her unit securing a life sentence, plus an additional five years ’ imprisonment, for a perpetrator who raped a minor girl while forcing her friend to watch the horrific ordeal
But Nthoba’s commitment goes beyond the courtroom She goes the extra mile in restoring the dignity of victims left in her care
One of her most memorable cases involved a serial rapist who was handed down five life sentences across four dockets One of the key witnesses, a young victim, had gone missing shortly before
she was due to testify
“I remember her father telling me he had not seen her for days, and that she was not in a good space, ” recalls Nthoba
“We drove around Welkom looking for her
“When I finally found her, she did not want to go through with the case
“I sat down with her and explained how important it was for her to testify, not just for justice, but for her own healing”
They returned to Bloemfontein late that night, bought her food and toiletries, and ensured she had a safe place to sleep
“The next morning, she stood tall in court clean, sober, and ready
“Seeing her take the stand, I knew she was on the path to reclaiming her dignity
“It felt good”
As one of the 176 FCS units in the country, members of the Mangaung FCS believe that every conviction is a step closer to a safer South Africa for all women, children, and other vulnerable groups
A talented Bloemfontein-based sculptor, Miné Kleynhans (34), has added another signature to South Africa’s prestigious Sasol New Signatures Visual Arts competition
Sasol and the Association of Arts Pretoria announced Kleynhans would be running her solo exhibition Augury After Autogogues, as the winner of the 2024 instalment of the competition
The exhibition can be viewed at the Pretoria Art Museum from 4 September to 2 November
When she is not sculpting, Kleynhans works as a project coordinator at the University of the Free State’s (UFS) art gallery She holds a Master of Fine Art (MFA) degree from the same institute
This solo exhibition of hers is a speculative and satirical exploration of contemporary mysticism and self-truths in an age of information overload Through a series of imaginative installation pieces and invented devices, the exhibition introduces the concept of the “autogogue”: a self-styled oracle who seeks meaning through intuition, emotion and
personal interpretation
Kleynhans revealed that the same competition in which she won R100 000 last year, inspired the concept behind her latest work
“The idea for the exhibition
came to me on a flight home from the Sasol New Signatures award ceremony
“It felt fully formed, like it

South Africa’s beer industry is more than just a source of refreshment it is an economic powerhouse woven into the cultural and economic fabric of our country Evidence thereof is in Oxford Economics’ “Beer’s Global Economic Footprint” study It revealed that in 2023, the industry contributed R96,4 billion to South Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP), generated R56,5 billion in tax revenue, and supported more than 210 000 jobs
The Beer Association of South Africa’s (Basa) mandate is to protect and promote this industry while sustaining livelihoods
But it cannot do so without fair and forward-looking regulation – specifically to excise tax policy, which has reached an unsustainable tipping point
Despite the beer industry’s contributions to the country’s economy, it is under increasing strain In the 2025-’26 national budget, tax on alcohol was raised by 6,75%, continuing a pattern of above-inflation hikes
While large players may be able to absorb some of the blow, numerous small and craft brewers cannot resulting in closures, job losses, and declining sector diversity
Currently, excise and VAT together account for up to 40% of the price of a 340ml beer exceeding the average brewer’s operating costs For township taverns and community brewers, often micro-entrepreneurs, this is unsustainable
They are lifelines in economically marginalised communities
Adding fuel to the fire, several provinces have introduced steep increases in licensing fees across manufacturing and retail categories For small players, these increases push them closer to non-compliance, or worse: illicit activity This happens not out of malice, but necessity The illicit alcohol market is already a growing threat According to Euromonitor, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of illicit alcohol consumption rose by 10% between 2017 and 2020, accounting for 22% of total consumption The lack of enforcement, compounded by high taxation and regulatory burdens, is inadvertently driving consumers and producers underground eroding both public safety and tax revenue The conversation around beer should be reframed not just as a product, but as a driver of jobs, tourism, township economy development and heritage
had been waiting for the right opportunity to emerge, ” said Kleynhans
Each of the works that will be featured in the exhibition, reflects Kleynhans’ fascination with how individuals respond to the speed, scale and complexity of modern life
Her devices mimic outdated tools and mystical instruments, often blurring the line between satire and sincerity in a commentary on our emotional and spiritual capacities, requiring the viewer to define their own understanding of Kleynhans’ curious cosmology
The exhibition will coincide with the 2025 Sasol New Signatures exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum
It will include the final 105 artworks selected from the eight regional submission centres across South Africa
The winners of this year ’ s competition will be announced on 3 September
Visitors to the exhibition can expect interactive sculptural works, many of which have been created by new processes and mediums for the artist, such as welding, steelwork and 3D printing
This is particularly crucial in the run-up to October’s Transport Month and the festive season, where low- and zero-alcohol options are campaigned
Also, the “one-size-fits-all” excise tax model should be challenged Blanket increases ignore the differences between multinational brewers and township-based micro-operators
A differentiated excise framework, or increased small, medium, and micro enterprise (SMME) support, is essential to level the playing field
Another need is to call on SMME support agencies to include alcohol-related businesses in their development mandates These are legitimate businesses supporting households and communities they deserve the same support as any other entrepreneur
Brewing a sustainable future is fundamental If government is serious about inclusive economic growth, it must recognise the role of beer in South Africa’s socio-economic ecosystem
As it approaches the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS), Basa will continue to engage with the National Treasury and request a review of the current excise policy development process calling for a structured consultation process that ensures extensive and inclusive stakeholder engagement
A more transparent and predictable process is essential to address policy uncertainty, which is currently undermining investor confidence and business sustainability particularly for SMMEs South Africa’s beer industry is ready to grow, innovate, and lead But it cannot do that with a tax system that brews failure

The Free State Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs’ (Destea) receipt of a clean audit report is benchmarking the department’s long-term strategic plan of accountability
This is according to Ketso Makume, MEC for the Department of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, commenting on the side of his department’s receipt of clean audit from the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) for the 2024-’25 financial year
A clean audit implies the money has been used ideally, and for the intended programmes or purposes
This is an improvement from the audit outcome for the 2022-’23 financial year
The clean audit opinion means that the Destea audited Annual Financial Statements for 2024-’25 were free from material misstatements, and that no irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure incidents were reported
Makume said the department adopted the strategy towards the achievement of a clean audit outcome a few years ago
“This strategy rests on the implementation of effective internal controls, improving the quality of infrastructure delivery, and implementing AGSA recommendations and directives
“The approach ensured that every financial transaction was done within the financial prescripts to avoid irregular expenditure,” he said
According to Makume, a clean audit signals buy-in by the department’s employees, who did not drop the ball
over the years following adoption of the strategy
“The department remains committed to ensuring good governance It is through collective actions of management and staff in general that the department witnessed improvements in audit outcomes, from qualified to unqualified with findings in the 2022-’23 and 2023’24 financial years, ” he said “This endorsement by the office of the AGSA serves to strengthen the department’s continued commitment towards good governance
“It also confirms that the reported performance is supported by valid, reliable, and complete performance evidence,”
said Makume, further congratulating the entire staff, which includes the head of the department
He believes the report outcome signals that the department is on the path of excellence and professionalism
“I would like to congratulate the team for their sterling work in ensuring that we spend the money entrusted to us by the people of the Free State in a prudent and responsible manner
“Meeting the standards of the AGSA clearly indicates that the department developed and stringently implemented action plans aimed at correcting the deficiencies identified during the previous years ’ audits,” said Makume
The South African Reserve Bank’s (SARB) cut of the repo rate by 25 basis points to 7,00% offers significant relief to the residential property market
This has reduced the prime lending rate, used for calculating home loan interest rates, from 10,75% to 10,50% effective since 1 August
According to Renier Kriek, managing director at Sentinel Homes, the modest reduction translates into an estimated saving of around R250 per month on a R1,5 million home loan over 20 years easing affordability for buyers and existing homeowners
“The cut brought 1% total interest rate relief in the SARB’s current cutting cycle, which started in September 2024 The repo rate has been cut from 8% to 7% over the period,” said Kriek
“However, the SARB simultaneously revised its gross domestic product (GDP) growth outlook downward, signalling that economic momentum remains weak
“As a result, consumers are unlikely to be buoyed significantly by this marginal lowering of interest rates, and property demand may see only gradual or shallow improvement
“From an economic perspective, our most pressing need is for economic growth and job creation, which is the rising
tide that would lift the boats of all segments of the economy, including the property market,” said Kriek
He stressed that due to the SARB’s policy stance, real interest rates remain too high to stimulate meaningful fixed capital formation investments critical for expanding housing supply and creating employment in construction, manufacturing and other capital-intensive industries
He attributes this to the SARB’s policy stance to deviate from its stated mandate
“This highlights the challenge of balancing inflation control with the need for growth-supportive policy The National Treasury needs to step in and take control of the SARB, which is riding roughshod over its agreed mandate
“The lower yields on fixed-income securities, like bonds, mean that the capital value of those instruments have increased on the back of the announcement, meaning that the bond investors, including balanced funds and similar retail savings vehicles, have made some money
“The rand has also weakened because of the announcement, as can be expected
“This is likely, ignoring rand volatility, to raise the prices of imports and have a small inflationary effect,” said Kriek

The University of the Free State’s (UFS) men ’ s football side has begun a new chapter after enlisting the services of Mokete Reuben Tsotetsi as head coach, on a three-year deal
The hard-tackling central defender, who holds a coaching qualification offered by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), was unveiled on 5 August, alongside two technical team members: the vastly experienced Teboho “Double” Moeti as assistant coach and Donald Nkopane as goalkeeper coach
Tsotetsi’s main task is to take on the challenge of winning the Varsity Football Cup, a premier competition featuring eight of South Africa’s university teams
He started off his tenure positively, having his team securing a point in an away game against the University of Pretoria’s (UP) Tuks in a match played on Thursday, 7 August
The Kovsie men welcome the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in a second match, this Thursday Kick-off
year agreements With a longer term, the coach will have a clear plan to work towards
“We will re-evaluate his performance at the end of the contract,”
Laka explained Tsotetsi’s assignment is to transform the men ’ s team into a formidable force, while balancing the players’ academic performance
“Our vision is to holistically develop students playing football, to be successful academically and in the sport itself,” said Laka
“Though not all will make it into professional football, the chief idea is to offer them the platform to achieve the dream of playing at professional level”
Kaizer Chiefs, Bafana Bafana and the now defunct
“I believe with his wealth of experience as a player and coach and his proven track record, as well as a penchant for developing strong footballers both on and off the field, coach Tsotetsi embodies the values and spirit of care of our university, and excellence,” said Laka Tsotetsi has expressed great appreciation in getting an opportunity to coach at university level and improve the game of football
is at 18:30
Jerry Laka, UFS KovsieSport director, said the university decided on Tsotetsi out of 32 applicants
The duration of his contract is equivalent to that of coaches in the
Premier Soccer League (PSL)
“Tsotetsi emerged as the favourite of the four shortlisted finalists we interviewed, and he accepted the position
“We have moved away from one-
Laka has expressed great optimism about the prospects of experiencing success in this new chapter of Kovsie football
“Tsotetsi brings a wealth of experience, passion, and leadership to our football programme We are excited for the future under his guidance”
Tsotetsi played for Jomo Cosmos,
“A three-year deal will enable me to adapt to university football, integrating it with professional football and the academic pursuits of the players I believe this will be challenging and exciting at the same time, having to ensure a balance between the players’ academic performance and performance in the sport,” said Tsotetsi
His achievement in leading Maccabi FC to gaining promotion to the professional rank in 2018 has arguably stood Tsotetsi in a good stead to secure the deal as the Kovsie men ’ s football head coach
