The dismissal of a Makabelane Technical School teacher in Qwaqwa in the Eastern Free State regarding accusations of sexual misconduct, has received the thumbs up, with the provincial Department of Education called on to take even tougher action against sexual predators
The department confirmed the firing of the unidentified perpetrator on 12 May, following an arbitration hearing that found the male teacher guilty Howard Ndaba, spokesperson for the department, said the verdict was handed down by the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) after finding the educator guilty of eight allegations of sexual misconduct involving three learners, which reportedly took place during the past two years Ndaba said the victims had been 14 and 16 years old, and another aged 18, when the abuse took place between 2023 and 2024 He said that in addition, the ELRC had also ruled that the educator was deemed unsuitable to work with children in terms of Section 120 (4) of the Children’s Act According to Ndaba, the department would ensure the victims receive the care and assistance
Welcoming the sacking of the teacher, Dulandi Leech, DA spokesperson on education in the Free State Legislature, has further called on the department to act urgently to resolve the remaining cases reported to the ELRC, a bargaining council that serves the public education sector nationally and provincially
The call for concerted action and urgency from the provincial Department of Education is informed by the ELRC report for the 2024-’25 period This states that 12 cases of sexual harassment and abuse of learners by teachers in the province were referred Leech’s evidence of widespread sexual misconduct in Free State schools further points to two incidents of the alleged rape of 17-year-old female learners by two teachers: at the Hentie Cilliers Hoërskool in Virginia, and the Dr Viljoen Combined School in Bloemfontein during April and October last year
The alleged rape of the learner in Bloemfontein reported occurred just a little over ten days before the commencement of the matric final exams
Acting on the instruction of the MEC for Education, Dr Julia Maboya, the school granted the learner a special concession and provided an alternative safe venue where she could write her final matric exams away from the school The department had also in-
The Free State Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team has seized essential documents from a major South African engineering construction company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE)
This is for a full-scale investigation amid allegations of corruption and fraud pertaining a multi-million-rand Free State government road infrastructure project
Conducted on Wednesday, 21 May, the search and seizure action arose from whistleblower allegations of corruption and fraud by the company awarded the road construction project
WO Fikiswa Matoti, provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, said their investigators and the Sasolburg Public Order Police (POP) had seized the documents These were seized at the company ’ s site Matoti said allegations arose during the bidding and appointment of a subcontractor rendering security services
Last year, the Free State Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport awarded a tender, worth R309 million, to the giant construction company for major upgrade of the R57 road The provincial road links Heilbron and Sasolburg
Matoti said the tender was eventually awarded to the main construction group which, in turn, was to appoint local subcontractors in terms of the conditions
She said the conditions were these subcontractors needed to have a 30% stake in the project
“It is alleged that the company that received the tender to render security services was not local It did not originate from Heilbron or Sasolburg
“One of the directors of the involved subcontractor allegedly became a director after the security company was appointed The subcontractor’s address allegedly changed to the newly appointed director’s address
“It is also alleged that the security company is not compliant with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA),” said Matoti
Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae handed over the project to the giant construction group during March last year She was the MEC for Community Safety, Roads, and Transport at the time
The department reported then that R30 million of the allocated budget was for different emerging subcontractors These subcontractors must meet the Construction Industry Development Board (CIBD) levels
Initially planned for 30 months the project, was anticipated for completion by the end of this year
The project reportedly created intensive labour opportunities for 1 134 residents from Sasolburg and Heilbron
The route also connects towns that include Vanderbijlpark with Phuthaditjhaba via Sasolburg, Heilbron and Reitz
A group of five suspected organised kidnappers of a victim in the town of Thaba Nchu are remanded in custody while the police continue with their investigations
The men – Tumisang Mahlakodisane (32), Morena Au (32), Moloantoa Mofola (36), Theta Monethi (42) and Menyatso Kganare (40) – all face charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and kidnapping This followed their arrest regarding a kidnapping in March, and the extortion of an excessive amount of money from the victim’s bank account They are set to reappear in the Selosesha Magistrates’ Court on
Thursday 29 May They first appeared on 15 May
Brig Sam Makhele, provincial police spokesperson, said the victim had reportedly been kidnapped on 21 March, after which the victim’s bank card was used at different retail outlets in Bloemfontein, until he was released on 25 March
“The suspects were identified by video footage and the vehicle that was used during the commission of crime
“Two were arrested by the investigation team and others handed themselves over as the net was closing in on them,” said Makhele

e Bloemfontein Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team has launched an investigation with the chief objective to bring to book suspects linked to Eskom infrastructure property discovered on a smallholding outside Bloemfontein
The suspected stolen property, including copper cables and transformers, were recovered during an operation conducted on 20 May
The team comprised the police’s Tactical Response Team (TRT), the Firearms, Liquor and Second-Hand Goods (Flash) unit, the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), Eskom and Centlec
Lt Col Zweli Mohobeleli, provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, said Eskom officials had positively identified this range of property as belonging to the entity
“The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation detectives approached the court for a search warrant after learning about a warehouse on the plot where the loot was stored,” said Mohobeleli
“Upon searching the premises, they found different voltage transformers, rolls of copper cable, and several loose items, which include electricity meter boxes
“
The recovered, suspected stolen Eskom property is worth R9 million”
Mohobeleli said the owner of the smallholding and the person renting were known
Maj Gen Mokgadi Bokaba, provincial head of the Hawks, has vowed that the elite crime fighting wing would do everything possible to find the syndicate and bring them to book
“We will leave no stone unturned
in ensuring the protection of essential infrastructure,” Bokaba emphasised the entity’s resolve
In February, the provincial police discovered copper cables of which the value amounted to more than R8 million on a truck during a routine patrol on the N1 at Vaal Plaza, near Parys
They discovered six bags of stripped copper cables hidden beneath polyvinyl chloride (PVC) covers, and other
scrap wires inside the trailer
A 46-year-old male driver was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation about the origin of the cables This missing link lead to his arrest
He reportedly provided invoices and delivery notes, which indicated that the cargo should have been PVC cables, weighing approximately 28 200 kg
However, the documents made no mention of copper cables

Two Medical Microbiology students of the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, achieved a significant milestone and recognition when they presented their paper on artificial intelligence (AI)
Chanelle Mcleod (second year) and Nthabiseng Tshandu (third year) were invited to present at a prestigious global event attended by about 803 scientists, hosted by the University of Kent in England
Their presentation, titled "AI Through the Student Lens: A Question and Answer AI Engagement with Central University of Technology Students," was delivered alongside renowned academics and students from various international institutions The students integrated AI tools such as ChatGPT 3 5 and Meta AI (WhatsApp) in their investigation to identify pathogenic organisms They populated large language models (LLMs) with patient microscopy,
culture, and sensitivity (MCS) data, supplemented with biochemical test results, and critically evaluated AI-generated feedback
Under the mentorship of Prof Parks Makhoahle, Medical Microbiology lecturer, the students engaged in a diagnostic practical integrating AI tools
to analyse pathogenic organisms
Using MCS data, supplemented with biochemical test results, they critically evaluated AI-generated diagnoses
Their assignment was focused on identifying bacterial pathogens exhibiting beta-hemolytic and weak alpha characteristics on blood agar, with specific gram morphological structures observed as long chains and short chains, respectively, for different academic levels
"Our students showcased the integration of AI into Medical Microbiology diagnosis, emphasising its benefits while cautioning the attendees about the importance of information verification and human oversight in their final clinical decisions," Makhoahle added
"Their contribution highlighted the CUT's commitment to innovation in medical education and the critical role of AI in diagnostic sciences "
Their synopses were accepted for presentation alongside other subject experts and students
The councillors for wards 23, 20 and 26 in Bloemfontein hosted an information session on 19 May, on recent land use applications in Universitas
The three councillors – Tjaart van der Walt of ward 23, Hennie van Niekerk of ward 26 and Corize van Rensburg of ward 20 –also recently handed over to the Mangaung Metro Municipality a petition with 900 signatures from concerned residents
They have asked the metro to urgently address issues posed by the uncontrolled and illegal construction of student houses
Van der Walt explained at the meeting why it was important for residents of Universitas, Park West, Universitas Ridge, and Brandwag to take note of applications of land use and to become involved and send objections to prevent the further unlawfull building of student houses
He said that, presently, there were around
six applications for student houses, for 20 students each
“Although these applications could be within the current bylaw of the Mangaung Municipality, it creates a huge strain on infrastructure, and each case must be duly investigated,” said Van der Walt
He gave details of four applications that were in contravention of the bylaw on student houses
“While economic growth and job creation is central to the DA’s mission, communities have a right to raise concerns Orderly planning and compliance with legal regulations are important to ensure sustainable communities”
During a council meeting in April, Van der Walt urged the metro to hold public hearings where applicants could present plans and enable residents to raise and possibly address concerns while improving planned developments He said this would also allow officials to respond to questions
raised regarding students accommodation
He stressed the importance of having such meetings, further warning: “Without this, public opposition will persist, stalling development”
Van der Walt highlighted challenges of uncontrolled development and solutions like high-density student accommodation on the provincial land next to the campus, calling for bylaw enforcement to halt illegal building that endangers the lives of students benefiting from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas)
Van der Walt further highlighted the impact on power supply, and extended power failures in Universitas often affecting many student houses through cable faults and other problems
According to him, this causes infrastructure overloading due to numerous illegal and uncontrolled developments
“This will only increase as the winter approaches”

When elaborating on her synopsis, Tshandu said her experience with AI has been beneficial in her academics as there were concepts that she could not grasp from physical learning and teaching, that she could now master because of the App
"Incorporating AI in learning and teaching has the potential to enhance student engagement, give clearer understanding, and provide better outcomes as much as it has its own challenges," she highlighted She added that using the App for her assignment opened ample learning opportunities as it provided her with more information by suggesting for further testing in molecular or biochemical test to confirm the identity of the organism McLeod said that AI plays a critical role in enhancing learning and interpretation It is a transformative tool that enhances academic performance, fosters curiosity, and empowers students to approach scientific inquiry with confidence

Schools from across the Free State took part in the regional Federation of Dance Drill, Cheerleading and Majorettes Free State (FDDCMFS) Competition that was held at the Brebner High School in Bloemfontein on Saturday, 17 May
Duane Erasmus, chief judge and vice-president of the FDDCMFS, explains it was established in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown to provide a platform for dance drill, colour guard, marching bands, majorette sport, baton, and cheerleading to youths across South Africa
The Free State played a pivotal role in the federation's early development, hosting the inaugural national championships in Bloemfontein in 2022
This marked the beginning of the organisation's expansion, with participation growing from three provinces in 2022, to eight by 2024
The FDDCMFS has been instrumental in promoting inclusivity and youth development through its programmes, even offering opportunities for both male and female athletes
The schools that participated, achieved the following results:
The Olive Ridge Purple Puffs shared first place in pom solo,
In an era marked by accelerated geopolitical shifts and increasing multipolarity, it is imperative for African states to develop a clear understanding of their strategic interests and adopt sophisticated, long-term approaches to global engagement
The stakes are ever high The decisions made today will determine whether Africa continues to occupy a peripheral role in global affairs or asserts its rightful position as a leader in sustainable development, peace and innovation History, in the post-independence era, reveals a persistent pattern One where Africa has frequently struggled to articulate a unified and coherent position on issues of critical importance to its own development
While global diplomacy is often likened to a game in which outcomes are determined by strength, but also by strategic acumen, Africa’s participation in this “ game ” has often been undermined by internal fragmentation The result has been a pattern of disunity that external actors have consistently exploited Three key examples illustrate the consequences of Africa’s inability to act in unison
Firstly, there is the issue of climate change negotiations at the United Nations Climate Summit Although African nations are among the most affected by climate change, the continent has often failed to present a coordinated position in international climate negotiations Disparate national interests, varying degrees of vulnerability, and reliance on donor support have contributed to fragmented advocacy This has weakened Africa’s bargaining power, particularly in critical areas such as climate finance, adaptation mechanisms, and compensation for loss and damage This diminishes the continent’s prospects for social development
second place in pom duo/ trio, and fifth place in pom group
Olive Ridge Primary won five silver medals, and a bronze
The Olive Ridge High School won five gold and one silver achievement Atang Primary won ten gold and four silver
The Roseview Stars won one gold, three silver, two bronze, and two fourth places The Brebner High School won a first place in the drill category
The Siggies Independent Team won four first prizes and one silver Finally, the Credence Primary School's Pom Group won gold
Secondly, there was the 2011 Libyan crisis, which will forever be an albatross around Africa ’ s neck The African Union (AU) initially advocated for a peaceful resolution to the Libyan conflict However, several African states either supported or conceded to the Nate-led intervention endorsed by the 1973 UN Security Council Resolution This divergence undermined the AU’s position and weakened Africa’s capacity to influence the post-conflict reconstruction of Libya, thereby reducing the continental voice in matters of regional peace and security Thirdly, it is an issue of the reform of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Despite the long-standing Ezulwini Consensus of 2005, which calls for expanded African representation in the UNSC, African states have been unable to coalesce around specific candidates or a unified reform agenda Internal competition among leading states, particularly Nigeria, South Africa, and Egypt, has stalled progress, revealing deeper fractures in continental diplomacy Amid contemporary global tensions, ranging from the US-China rivalry to the continuing Russia-Europe standoff, Africa finds itself in a vulnerable position, caught between competing spheres of influence Recent overtures from major powers resemble a modern-day Berlin Conference, with external actors vying for influence across a divided continent In the absence of unity, individual African states are likely to be courted in isolation, weakening the continent’s collective agency
Africa possesses immense potential through its rich natural resources, a burgeoning youth population, and vast opportunities in green energy, digital innovation and agribusiness
A cohesive and assertive Africa, leveraging its comparative advantages, could emerge as a key architect of a new, more equitable world order
The challenge lies in external dynamics and in the internal strategic posture of African leaders
A classic example is last Wednesday’s diplomatic engagement between Pres Cyril Ramaphosa and the US administration, which reflects a calculated effort to restore strained relations In the face of provocations, including misleading statements by Pres Donald Trump on land reform and crime in South Africa, Ramaphosa’s measured approach arguably prioritised longterm diplomatic and economic interests over rhetorical retaliation

The Central University of Technology (CUT) has given Dr Khotso Nkhatho another feather in the cap
The cultural icon was honoured, very fittingly, at the Dr Khotso Nkhatho Public Lecture, with the theme “The Role of Language in Promoting Cultural Identity” This year ’ s was the fourth annual lecture
Respected community leader Makhabane Koali, also an educationist, delivered the lecture, sharing powerful insights into the current and future state of indigenous languages He emphasised that language goes beyond words, and that it is a mirror of our surroundings, values and lived experiences
“Language is everything around us, ” said Koali
“From the environment we live in, to how we connect with others, our culture, our history, our food; it’s all carried in language If we lose that, we lose our identity”
Koali has urged the audience to consider how countries like South Korea have become global cultural forces by promoting their mother tongue across all sectors
“Even with multiple dialects, they remain unified by language, and that’s where their strength lies Their language carries their identity, and the world respects that,” he said
Koali also highlighted the significance of learning in one ’ s home language, stating that it builds not only an understanding of concepts, but also the confidence that leads to better comprehension and deeper
academic success
“When taught in our own language, we don’t just pass; we thrive,” he said, encouraging the integration of indigenous languages into mainstream curricula
Koali emphasised the power of media in shaping and sustaining language
“The media should be a tool we use to keep our languages alive through radio, television, storytelling, and mu-
sic Let’s not only consume culture; let’s preserve and promote it”
Koali has committed his life to teaching and nurturing young minds
As a former radio tutor, his commitment to holistic development extends beyond the classroom
He is the chief of Ha Kopano, where he upholds traditional values while promoting development within his community Through his multifaceted roles, he continues to inspire many
The CUT’s celebration of Nkhatho was a tribute to an individual, as well as a call to action As language policies undergo revision, his journey stands as proof that cultural identity can thrive when rooted in the richness of indigenous expression, which encompasses traditional practices, storytelling, language and art
His legacy continues to inspire generations of storytellers, educators, and language activists to remain true
to their roots Nkhatho is a strong advocate for the Sotho language and storytelling He is a respected educator, actor, director and Sotho novelist known for his outstanding performances and many roles in the 1980s Sotho drama Mopheme
His devotion to preserving Sotho via arts and media won him an Honorary Doctor of Communication and Language Practice qualification from the CUT
The 14 nations featured in the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) Cup Tournament will play their matches in Bloemfontein from 4 to 15 June.
At the draw conducted on Wednesday, 21 May, the Dr RP Molemela Stadium and the Toyota Stadium were announced as the venues where all the fixtures will be played
The participating countries include South Africa and Morocco, with the latter being invited as the only country not part of the 16 Southern African Development Community (Sadc) states
The nations featured in the upcoming tournament will even share training venues in the Free State’s capital given the challenge of insufficient suitable training venues They were divided into four groups during the draw
Delivering their welcoming addresses of the Cosafa tournament last Wednesday, both Ntombizanele

Sifuba took his queue from Nelson Mandela’s famous quote on sport: “Sport has the power to change the world It has the power to inspire It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does”
Nthatisi repeated the metro was taking advantage of Bloemfontein being central in South Africa to hosting big sporting events The metro’s commitment to hosting the football tournament is reportedly valued at a whopping R6 million

Botshabelo, which is the biggest township in the Free State and duly part of the Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM), is an equally strong football hub but has not been allocated any matches The town’s exclusion is despite strong prospects of a looming fixture congestion at the two hosting stadiums With no matches allocated to Botshabelo to host at the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium, football supporters will have to travel to Bloemfontein to watch the 14 countries clash
Sipho Gxilisha, chairman of Mathaithai FC which campaigns in the semi-professional Free State ABC Motsepe League, expressed mixed emotions regarding the highly anticipated international tournament
“Firstly, it is great to see our province hosting such a great professional tournament which obviously comes at a great cost We hope to see more financial support given to the local teams to grow our football
“However, Botshabelo could have at least been given an opportunity to host one group of the tournament A tournament like this does not come often and affords our province access to professional football, to different areas especially Botshabelo (the Kaiser Sebothelo Stadium) as it is not even far from Bloemfontein That
would also be a great opportunity to improve the standard of the only football facility we have in Botshabelo,” said Gxilisha
“I do not know the possible reasons behind the planning committee’s decision to exclude Botshabelo as one of the hosting stadiums
“Remember, even the hawkers and security officers would be able to benefit from the process Bear in mind, Bloemfontein has already been capable and privileged to host Bafana Bafana games and Premier Soccer League (PSL) matches of the Marumo Gallants So, spreading the wings to Botshabelo in the Cosafa games would have been a great move for the fans and the province respectively,” said Gxilisha Gxilisha’s team is one of two clubs

With many running races and cycling events, there is nothing quite as frustrating as pushing your limits in a workout, only to be stopped in your tracks by a sudden, painful muscle cramp. Whether you are an experienced athlete or a weekend warrior, muscle cramps can throw off your training, hinder performance
Furthermore, they leave you hesitant to push harder next time But the truth is, these unwelcome interruptions are largely preventable “Muscle cramps are involuntary contractions that can occur due to a variety of factors, including muscle fatigue, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalances,” explains Selvan Naicker, brand manager for CrampEase®
He attributes muscle cramps to overworking muscles without giving them proper time to recover is one of the most common culprits “This particularly in endurance training or high-intensity workouts
“Hydration plays a crucial role in preventing cramps When we sweat, our bodies lose not just water but also key electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium – minerals essential for muscle function If not replenished, the imbalance can lead to involuntary muscle contractions”
Naicker’s advice is, essentially, to drink enough water before, during, and after training
“In prolonged or intense sessions, an electrolyte-rich beverage may be beneficial Using a supplement regularly such as CrampEase® Fizzy and the CrampEase Oral Spray whose formula includes magnesium, calcium, sodium and potassium, can help give your body what it needs to avoid muscle cramps and provide you with what you need to keep on track with your training
“Incorporating a proper warm-up and cooldown routine that includes dynamic and static stretching can reduce the risk of cramps Regular stretching helps improve flexibility and prevent muscle tightness that contributes to cramping episodes Furthermore, gradually increasing workout intensity rather than making sudden leaps in duration or difficulty allows muscles to adapt and become more resilient against fatigue,” said Naicker
What should you do if a muscle cramp does occur? Immediate action can help alleviate the pain “Gentle stretching and massaging of the affected muscle can help relax it; while rehydrating and replenishing electrolytes can aid in faster recovery Muscle cramps do not have to derail your training By taking proactive steps with hydration, nutrition, stretching and smart training, you can keep them at bay and stay on track with your personal goals Train smarter, not harder, and let your muscles work with you, not against you, ” said Naicker

The Marumo Gallants are aiming to reach even greater heights in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) after successfully navigating a turbulent 2024-’25 season.
The club managed to weather the dreaded relegation storm under Moroccan mentor Abdeslam Ouaddou, who steered the Gallants to finish in tenth position with 32 points in the premiership
The Gallants needed just a single point to complete the effort of qualifying for next season ’ s top eight competition
However, the club fell short after playing to a 1 – 1 draw with Magesi in the final premiership league fixture on Saturday, 24 May
This was a must-win match the Bloemfontein-based outfit to be counted among the eight top-seeded clubs It was also the Bahlabane ba Ntwa’s final league fixture for this season
Dr Abram Sello, president of the Marumo Gallants, holds the strong view that successful navigation of a turbulent season benchmarks for best things to come in the new season of 2025-’26
This is informed by his introspection of the challenging season
“I’m happy so far, we are off the hook in terms of relegation,” says Sello
“We worked so hard to avoid relega-
tion, and the issue we had to deal with was a change in the workmanship in the coaching department Sometimes it does work and sometimes it does not work; fortunately it worked, because we managed to avoid relegation
“And yes, I agree, the decision to change in the technical coach was a big gamble and worth taking, but it was very strenuous too Thank God, we will still be in the premiership to compete
“We will further rectify and build where necessary to a better team than this season ”
The “change in workmanship” is a reference to enlisting Ouaddou with just ten remaining league matches be-
fore the end of the just-ended season
The club simultaneously sacked Dan Malesela, who had started the season as the head coach; and Molefi Ntsi, who had been enlisted as technical director The latter was roped in with the hope of helping to improve the situation of the Gallants, which was gravely concerning
In the midst of the trouble, Ouaddou steered the club ship to safety
The Bahlabane ba Ntwa’s drastic improvement is a seven-match unbeaten streak The two losses suffered under Ouaddou’s leadership were against vast improved opponents, Sekhukhune United and Stellenbosch: 1 – 2 and 0 – 1, respectively
He attained the impressive record after his team played to a 1 – 1 draw with premiership rookies Magesi In truth, relegation would have been catastrophic for Sello in terms of money invested in this ambitious football venture of his
His investment entailed purchasing the Moroka Swallows premiership franchise with contractual obligation – contracts of all the players, debt of the club, injecting money to relocate to the Free State’s capital to start the project, as well as employing technical coaching personnel
In this turbulent season of their return to the elite rank, the Gallants’ notable highlight is reaching the semifinals of two cup championships: the Carling Black Label Cup and the Nedbank Cup
The achievements were under former South African-born mentor Male-
sela and current coach Ouaddou
A buoyant Sello expressed a great sense of delight about the club’s amazing run in cup competitions, describing this as a bonus
“Ja, this was somehow a surprise, but this was or is one of the best presents the team could give to people of this region, I believe, and to prove that coming to Bloemfontein is not a fluke
“We pushed to our best level, and to say, we are capable of performing and challenge a cup championship
“I’m satisfied with what we have managed this season, and let’s take it where we left it next I’m hopeful the football fraternity will see the best of
us in next season, ” says Sello, with a great sense of optimism
Ouaddou is equally delighted with the club’s remarkable improvement shown within three months of taking the reins
“We can feel so proud of maintaining an unbeatable record, comparing to few months ago, if we analyse our performance,” he says “The only disappointment is to drop crucial points in matches that I believe we should have won instead drawing or losing, you know
“We must congratulate the players for the efforts they have put in to save the club from relegation”
