En un mundo globalizado, mantener la identidad resulta fundamental. La Semana de la Chilenidad se ha convertido en un espacio que rescata nuestras tradiciones y se ha consolidado como un lugar de encuentro familiar. Una vez al año, y durante varios días, el campo chileno se instala en la ciudad con rodeo, música, danza, artesanía y representaciones artísticas que ayudan a consolidar nuestra identidad nacional.

In a globalized world, it is fundamental to conserve the identity. The Week of Chilean Identity has become a space which conserves our traditions and It has become famous as a place for families to get together. Once a year, and for several days, the Chilean countryside comes to the city with its rodeo, music, dance, handicrafts and artistic performances which help to strengthen our national identity.

Es así como con el paso del tiempo, esta muestra se ha consolidado con una asistencia promedio de 500 mil personas y como un polo de atracción para los extranjeros que quieren conocer nuestras raíces.

That is how, over time, this exhibition has become so famous with an average of 500 thousand people attending and as a pole of attraction for the foreigners interested in learning about our roots.

Presentación Presentation

La Semana de la Chilenidad es un evento que no nace de la nostalgia, sino de una visión de futuro, basada en conocer y valorar nuestra identidad nacional. Su idea fundamental no es una suerte de escenificación historicista de la vida tradicional de nuestros campos en el pasado, sino una oportunidad de que sus componentes esenciales manifiesten su vitalidad en el presente y, por cierto, se proyecten hacia el futuro. Nuestra actividad en torno a esta Semana es algo eminentemente actual. Tenemos plena conciencia de que, como personas y como país, estamos inmersos en un mundo global, y no lo lamentamos en absoluto: apreciamos las ventajas y participamos enérgicamente en todo lo que es propio de nuestro tiempo, atentos a los indicios que dejan entrever el porvenir. Sin embargo, eso no significa abandonar y olvidar todo lo pasado. Bien se ha dicho que tradición no es aferrarse al pasado, sino preservar aquello que él tuvo de valioso, para que perviva en el presente y en el futuro. Y eso es lo que hacemos con esta Semana.

The Week of Chilean Identity is an event not born of nostalgia, but rather a vision of the future, based on understanding and valuing our national identity. Its fundamental idea rather than being some kind of historical scene making of the traditional lifestyle of our countryside in the past, is an opportunity for its essential components to be seen in all their present vitality and obviously to project this into the future. Our activity during this Week is something eminently up-to-date. We are fully aware that, as individuals and as a country, we are involved in a global world, and we do not regret this at all; we appreciate the advantages and we participate energetically in everything that is of our times, attentive to the signs, which reveal the future. Nevertheless, this does not mean abandoning and forgetting the past. It has been well-said that tradition is not anchored in the past, but preserves something which was of value in it so that it survives into the present and the future. And that is what we make of this Week.

Así entendidas, estas tradiciones benefician a quien toma contacto con ellas. Comunican arraigo, seguridad, identidad. Nos hablan de nosotros mismos, desde un enfoque enriquecedor. Y no como una curiosidad musearia, sino como algo enteramente vivo y actual, algo que nos hace vibrar en el presente. La Semana de la Chilenidad es del aquí y del ahora. Por eso convocan a las multitudes que reúnen año a año en tantos puntos del país, y por eso se extienden de comuna en comuna.

Looked at in this way, these traditions are of benefit to whomsoever comes into contact with them. They communicate roots, security and identity. They speak to us of ourselves from an enriching angle and not as a museum curiosity but as something totally alive and up-to-date, something which makes us feel the intensity of the present. The Week of Chilean Identity is of the here and now. For this reason the multitudes come together year after year in so many parts of the country and from community to community.

I think that this is due to a need to re-weigh factors. Our times –and those of our country– are 7

país con ella– es una época de urbanización. Ésta trae consigo muchos beneficios evidentes, pero el alma de las tradiciones chilenas está ligada al campo, a sus ritmos y valores, a sus colores y aromas, a sus sabores y su ambiente. Ése es un complemento, un equilibrio que necesitamos en la vida de ciudad. De allí que un grupo de personas nos reuniéramos para trabajar en el redescubrimiento de esas raíces que se iban escondiendo. El éxito de la Semana de la Chilenidad indica que ella responde a algo necesario. Ella es una amalgama de aspectos que contribuyen a una visión completa de la nación. Expresa un alma compleja, como lo son todas las almas. Expresa la permanencia dentro del cambio, y la variedad dentro de esa permanencia. Por eso, aunque estas jornadas se dan cita anual, el repertorio nunca se repite. La continua renovación de los elementos que integran esta muestra estimula año a año la curiosidad sobre las “novedades de la tradición”. Y es que la vida del campo es muy rica, no cansa, tiene amenidad, armonía y variedad. A diferencia de la vida urbana, vertiginosa y que no se ciñe a los ritmos humanos, sino más bien se impone a ellos, la vida rural apacigua y reconstituye nuestra naturaleza más íntima. Todo esto lo han comprendido bien los países más desarrollados, que cuidan con muchísimo esmero todo cuanto representa su identidad nacional, su cultura viviente, sus estilos propios, su “alma”, hasta convertirlos en el signo inconfundible que los distingue con rasgos únicos. Incluso puede decirse que hay una relación entre el alto grado de avance de esos países y la valoración de lo específicamente propio, por muy abiertos que estén a la globalidad. Con la Semana de la Chilenidad, nuestro país sigue hoy este ejemplo. Por eso, me honra abrir las puertas de ella al lector de estas páginas. Creo que ellas sorprenderán a muchos. La obra de los artesanos, la destreza de los jinetes, la pujanza de los criadores, el entrelazamiento del mundo militar con el mundo civil, el clima familiar, la amenidad contagiosa que impera durante esos días, confirman cuán importante es aquella parte de Chile que se manifiesta aquí.

This brings with it many evident benefits, but the heart of Chilean traditions are tied to the countryside, to its rhythms and values, its colors and aromas, and its tastes and its ambience. This is a complement, an element that we need in city life. That is why a group of us got together to work on rediscovering those roots which were gradually becoming hidden. The success of the Week of Chilean Identity indicates that it responds to a real need. It is a mixture of aspects which make up a complete vision of the nation. It expresses a complexity true of all souls. It expresses the permanence within change, and variety in permanence. That is why, although these festive days take place annually, their repertory is never repeated. The continuous renewal of the elements which make up this activity stimulates curiosity about “the novelties of the traditions” year after year. The thing is that life in the countryside is very rich, it does not tire, it is lively, harmonious and varied. In contrast to urban life which is fast and rather than being adjusted to human rhythms, imposes itself upon them, rural life is peaceful and reconstitutes our most intimate nature. Developed countries understand this phenomenon very well. They zealously protect everything which represents their national identity, their vibrant culture, their own style, their “soul”, to the point where these are converted into the unmistakable signs that distinguish their unique characteristics. You can even say that there is a relationship between the high level of development in these countries and the weight given to their own specific values, however much they may be open to globalization. With the Week of the Chilean Identity our country today follows this example. For this reason, it is my honor to open the doors of it to the reader of these pages. I believe that these pages will surprise many. The work of the artisans, the skill of the riders, the energy of the breeders, the strong relationship between the military and civil communities, the family climate, the contagious enjoyment during these days, confirm the importance of that aspect of Chile which manifests itself at that time. 9

Luis Iván Muñoz Vicepresidente Federación de Criadores de Caballos Chilenos Vice President Federation of Chilean Horse Breeders Luis Iván Muñoz no oculta su emoción y entusiasmo hacia las tradiciones que brotaron en la antigua sociedad rural de nuestro país. Con gran agilidad de espíritu relaciona la Semana de la Chilenidad como una continuidad creativa de las fiestas realizadas antaño, en el Santiago de nuestros mayores. Creativa, recalcamos, porque Luis Iván no se abandona a la nostalgia; su entusiasmo mira siempre al futuro.

Luis Iván Muñoz does not conceal his emotion and enthusiasm when it comes to the traditions which spring from the old rural society of our country. With great liveliness, Luis Iván links Chilean National Identity Week to the creative continuity of past celebrations, in the Santiago of our predecessors. Creative, we stress, because Luis Iván does not succumb to nostalgia; his enthusiasm is always looking forward to the future.

“Durante el siglo pasado se celebraba en la Quinta Normal de Santiago una gran Fiesta del Caballo Chileno –relata–, la que era organizada por la Sociedad Nacional de Agricultura. En esa fiesta se hacía una exposición nacional de caballos chilenos, y de otros caballares, como asimismo una Exposición Nacional de todas las razas de animales; se hacía un Gran Rodeo, que congregaba a los mejores exponentes del país; y se hacían también fiestas y juegos chilenos de toda índole.

“During the last century a grand Celebration of the Chilean Horse was held in the Quinta Normal in Santiago –he recounts– which was organized by the National Association of Agriculture. At this celebration there was a great national exhibition of Chilean horses, and of other equine species, as well as a National Exhibition of all kinds of animals; there was a Great Rodeo, which brought together the best practitioners of the sport in the country along with festivities and Chilean games of all kinds.

“Era una fiesta que lamentablemente se fue perdiendo con el tiempo, pero que quienes tuvimos la oportunidad de conocerla personalmente, o por los dichos de nuestros mayores, la seguimos añorando, y siempre era un referente que teníamos en mente cuando se quería organizar algún gran evento en torno al Caballo Chileno”. Y justamente, el lector atento descubrirá en las expresiones de muchos protagonistas de estas páginas, esa especie de “embrujo” que irradia el 10

“It was a celebration that unfortunately progressively disappeared as time went by, but those of us who had the opportunity to know of it, personally or through our predecessors, continued to miss it, and always had it in mind whenever it was desired to organize any grand event concerning the Chilean Horse”. And precisely, the attentive reader will discover in the expressions of many of the main characters of

Así, no sorprende que la reunión de todos estos anhelos en una expresión común haya logrado una repercusión única. “Cuando se inició la Primera Semana de la Chilenidad, nadie imaginó ni en el más acalorado de sus sueños, que íbamos a lograr crear en pocos años un espacio en el cual se vuelven a vivir en familia todas las tradiciones chilenas, tanto del campo como de la ciudad, en un grato ambiente de cercanía y camaradería, donde la seguridad de los visitantes es cuidada de tal forma, que abuelos y padres pueden dejar a sus nietos e hijos correr y disfrutar de los juegos y espectáculos chilenos, rodeos, exposiciones, carruajes antiguos, carreras de perros galgos, circo, juegos criollos, exhibición de artesanías de todos los rincones de Chile, etc. “La Federación de Criadores organiza estos eventos junto a las Municipalidades de Las Condes y Vitacura. “En su desarrollo y a través del tiempo se han incorporado otras tantas organizaciones que han visto en la Semana de la Chilenidad un espacio para fortalecer nuestras raíces, espacio que había desaparecido y que hoy fue rescatado”. Sin duda, algo que ha sido un mérito muy reconocido. La iniciativa ha ido ganando distinciones y premios a lo largo del tiempo. “La Semana de la Chilenidad se ha hecho acreedora de todos los grandes premios e incentivos creados por empresas e instituciones que buscan precisamente difundir nuestros valores patrios entre los jóvenes para que en un mundo de globalizaciones, jamás pierdan su identidad como chilenos”. El empuje que se evidencia en todos los detalles de la gran muestra, a pesar del tiempo y esfuerzo que consume, nunca agota los bríos de los participantes. Porque la fragancia de la autenticidad impregna a quienes respiran el ambiente. La agitación disolvente de la vida urbana desaparece, y la vitalidad amable y humana de la vida del campo abre sus puertas para recibir a sus hijos pródigos.

these pages, a kind of bewitchment which permeates the rural countryside and its life-style. Those who have come to know at close hand the traditions that flourish in the countryside, become convinced that in them also flower the best examples of our national identity. Therefore, it is hardly surprising that the melting of all these wishes into a single common manifestation has achieved a unique reaction. “When the first Chilean National Identity Week took place, no one in his wildest dreams could have imagined that, in just a few years, we were going to create an event in which all the Chilean traditions would once again be experienced in a family setting, in the city and in the countryside, in a pleasant atmosphere of nearness and camaraderie, where the visitors security is so well taken care of, that grandparents and parents can let their grandchildren and children run around and enjoy the games and Chilean spectacles, rodeos, exhibitions, old carriages, greyhound races, the circus, local games, exhibition of handicrafts from all corners of Chile, etc. “The Federation of Breeders organizes these events in collaboration with the Municipalities of Las Condes and Vitacura. “As it developed in time, various other organizations have become involved, as they have discovered in Chilean National Identity Week, a forum for strengthening our roots, a forum which had disappeared and was rediscovered today”. Without doubt, a merit has been widely recognized. The initiative has won distinctions and prizes as time goes by. “Chilean National Identity Week has been deserving of all the major prizes and incentives created by firms and institutions that especially seek to promote our patriotic values among the youth, so that in a globalized world, they will never lose their identity as Chileans”. The energy, which is evident in all the details of the great display, in spite of the time and effort required, never overcomes the spiritedness of the participants. Because the flavour of authenticity imbues all who breathe the ambience. The enfeebling agitation of urban life disappears, and the friendly and human vitality of country life opens its doors to receive its prodigal sons. 11

Corren Vientos de Fiesta Chilena A Chilean Celebration is in the air

Se habla y se discute mucho sobre esta breve palabra: “identidad”. Arduos escritos o extensas charlas buscan desenredar el nudo del asunto, y a veces parecen apretarlo antes que liberarlo. Probablemente sea porque buscan la solución en solitario, cuando la identidad es en gran medida el fruto de una comunidad.

This little word “identity” is much mentioned and discussed. Serious documents or long lectures are dedicated to getting to the bottom of the matter, and at times this seems to obscure rather than clarify it. This is probably because the solution is sought in isolation, when identity is largely the product of a community.

Por lo mismo, la Semana de la Chilenidad organizada por las Muicipalidades de Las Condes y Vitacura en conjunto con la Federación de Criadores de Caballos Chilenos es un evento que logra lo que se propone: ser una invitación abierta a dicha comunidad, para crear un ambiente donde cada elemento lleve el sello de lo indiscutiblemente chileno. Y lo consigue, no por los componentes puramente materiales de esta fiesta, sino gracias a los participantes: personas que quieren “sentir” al país, que van en familia a contribuir con su propia chispa de chilenidad, que vibra en común con todos los demás que están allí.

This is why Chilean Week, as organized by the Municipalities of Las Condes and Vitacura in collaboration with the Federation of Horse Breeders, is an event which achieves what it sets out to do: to be an open invitation to the said community, to create an atmosphere each element of which bears the seal of being indisputably Chilean. And it does this, not through the purely material components of the celebration, but thanks to the participants: people who want to “feel” the country, who go in family groups to contribute their spark of Chilean identity, and who thrill in common with all the others present.

Seguramente nadie acude con el ánimo de escribir un libro; pero quien quiera escribirlo, debería venir a este lugar. Se dará cuenta que a un país lo hacen sus familias, que la “identidad” se va moldeando en su interior. Al fin y al cabo, ¿qué es un país, sino el lugar donde sus habitantes “se sienten en casa”? ¿Y qué es “sentirse en casa”, sino sentirse en el lugar donde está la familia? El tono familiar define a la nación.

Surely no one attends the event with the intention of writing a book; but anyone with that intention should go to that event. They will realize that a country is created by its families, that “identity” is forged from the inside. In the end what is a country, if not the place where its inhabitants “feel at home”? And what is “feeling at home” if not feeling oneself in the place where the family is to be found? The family tone defines the nation.

Así, rumbo al bicentenario de la República, la Semana de la Chilenidad aporta algo fundamental: un marco donde los estilos del país, su voz y hasta su rostro se deja ver, repartido en las voces y los rostros de los niños, los jóvenes, los adultos y los ancianos que respiran la alegría compartida de pertenecer al mismo terruño. Ese lugar donde tienen una forma propia de reír o de llorar, de cantar o de hablar, de festejar o de contemplar la vida.

Thus, in the run up to the bicentenary of the Republic, Chilean National Identity Week contributes something fundamental: a framework in which the styles of the country, its voice and even its countenance are revealed, in the voices and the faces of the children, the youth, the adults and the elderly who breathe in the shared happiness of belonging to the same land. This place where they have their own way of laughing or crying, singing or talking, of celebrating or of contemplating life.

Sutil, imperceptible e inconfundible, la identidad, como un alma verdadera, sin dejarse encasillar mantiene vivos, estrechos y cĂĄlidos los lazos que cohesionan a todo un paĂs. 16

Subtle, imperceptible and unmistakeable, identity, like a true soul, without allowing itself to be categorized, maintains alive, close and warm the links that keep a country together.

La hospitalidad con el forastero ha sido cantada muchas veces con orgullo en la música chilena. Las bandas internacionales de Canadá, India y Argentina, presentes en la apertura recordarán que esas canciones tienen su razón de ser...

The hospitality accorded to the stranger has been proudly sung about many times in Chilean music. The international bands of Canada, India and Argentina, present at the opening, will be testimony to the fact that these songs reflect reality... 19

Aliento de Generaciones

The Chilean Equestrian Squad: Enthusiasm of Generations

Alfredo Moreno Charme, nombre respetado en el mundo empresarial, adquiere otra proyección en la Semana de la Chilenidad. Aquí es el gestor de la “Escuadra Ecuestre Chilena”, del Criadero Palmas de Peñaflor, un elenco de 22 jinetes y 35 caballos que intengran su esposa y sus hijos y que ha ido conquistando al público con sus perfectos despliegues.

Alfredo Moreno Charme, a respected personality in the business world, takes on another role in Chilean National Identity Week. Here is the man behind the “Chilean Equestrian Squad”, of the Breeder Palmas de Peñaflor, a team of 22 riders, including his wife and children, and 35 horses, which has conquered the public with its perfect performances.

Este espectáculo ha ido creciendo sin apuro, pero con rienda firme. Nació en el criadero de Alfredo Moreno como manera de mostrar sus propios caballos. Muy pronto se fue entretejiendo con aspiraciones más profundas, explorando la identidad campesina para proyectarla con nuevo brillo hacia el resto del mundo.

This spectacle has evolved slowly but under tight rein. It was born in the stables of Alfredo Moreno as a way of showing his own horses. Soon it became interlinked with deeper endeavours, the exploration of rural identity in order to project it more sharply to the rest of the world.

La Semana de la Chilenidad los aplaude año tras año. El fervor que despierta el dominio magistral de la rienda, la cabalgadura, sumado a los bailarines, las músicas y las vestimentas, es más que satisfacción por un buen espectáculo: la Escuadra de los Moreno alcanza las fibras comunes a nuestra identidad. Por eso, en una exhibición que comienza siendo ecuestre, nadie se extraña al ver también escenas de una minga en Chiloé, una procesión de la Virgen del Carmen o hasta un eco de los bailes religiosos de La Tirana, en un soberbio caleidoscopio. La Escuadra comienza a desbordar nuestra frontera gracias a la colaboración de Luis Bustos, director de la Escuadra Ecuestre de Cabaña La República, Argentina. Para él, “esto es un hecho cultural relevante, mucho más que un espectáculo. Tiene connotaciones que hacen bien a todo el país”. 20

Chilean National Identity Week applauds them year after year. The fervor which is awakened by the magisterial domination of the reins, the horsemanship, as well as the dancers, the music and the costumes, is more than enough to guarantee a good spectacle: the Moreno Squad touches the common roots of our identity. This is why, in an exhibition which starts of being equestrian, no one is surprised to also see scenes of a “minga” in Chiloé, a procession of the Virgin of Carmen or an echo of the religious dances of La Tirana, in a proud kaleidoscope. The Squad is beginning to go beyond our borders thanks to the collaboration of Luis Bustos, director of the “Cabaña la Republica” Equestrian Squad, of Argentine. According to him, “this is a culturally relevant act, rather than a spectacle. It has positive connotations for the whole country”.

Pero hablar de Alfredo Moreno exige hablar de su familia. En efecto, su entusiasmo se amplifica con la participación de su esposa, Ana María Echeverría, y sus hijos, quienes convirtieron esta muestra de chilenidad en estímulo para sus propios lazos. Y es que la fisonomía de un país la elaboran sus familias a lo largo de las generaciones…

To speak of Alfredo Montero means speaking of his family. Effectively, his enthusiasm grows with his wife Ana María Echeverría´s participation, and that of her children, who convert this display of Chilean identity into a stimulus for their own family ties. The physiognomy of a country is fabricated by its families as the generations go by...

“Esta actividad nos ha permitido unirnos como familia –explica Alfredo– porque de alguna forma todos somos parte de esto. Ha permitido encontrar una raíz que uno lleva metida en el corazón, que poco a poco se va descubriendo: es la chilenidad, lo que nos hace sentirnos partícipes. Esto permite que no solamente nosotros, sino toda la gente que está asistiendo, se sienta parte de algo que tiene una historia. La gente necesita eso: sentirse parte de algo, y algo que puede compartir con el del lado aunque no lo conozca. Uno, para poder relacionarse, debe ser parte de algo. Es como un árbol sin raíces, sin ellas no puede crecer”.

“This activity has allowed us to come together as a family –explains Alfredo– because in one way or another we are all part of it. It has made it possible to come across roots which one carries buried in the heart, which little by little one discovers: it is the Chilean identity, which makes us feel we belong. This means that not only ourselves, but all who witness this, feel part of something with a history. People need that: to feel part of something, and something that can be shared by one’s fellow being even one unknown. One, in order to relate, must be part of something. It is like a tree without roots. It cannot grow without them”.

Cada año la Escuadra Ecuestre Chilena prepara un espectáculo con un profundo sentido histórico, que une el rico pasado de Chile, Argentina, Uruguay y Perú. Uno de los más recordados es “Caballos y Sonidos de América”, en el que participan representantes de cinco países latinoamericanos.

Every year the Chilean Equestrian Squad prepares a spectacle with a deep historic sense, which unites the rich past of Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Perú . One of the most memorable is “Horses and Sounds of America”, in which representatives of five latinamerican countries participate.

Ciertamente no hay nada que reemplace al “huaso” como prototipo del hombre chileno, y por lo mismo, esos jinetes venidos de lejos fueron comprendidos y respetados como emblemas por un público que supo verlos como arquetipos, saludándolos con aplausos cuando pasaron enarbolando sus propios pabellones.

Certainly nothing can replace the “huaso” as the prototype of Chilean man, and consequently, these horsemen come from afar were accepted and respected as emblematic by the audience which took them as archetypes, greeting them with applause when they paraded with their own colours flying.

Los huasos a caballo, buenos anfitriones, poco después formaron una magnífica escolta para la Virgen del Carmen, la Patrona nacional, que llegaba a presidir como madre una fiesta de hijos suyos. Los jinetes nacionales, con su atuendo más típico, pasarían poco después en tropel con banderas chilenas, levantando una polvareda que no ahogó los fervientes aplausos.

The mounted Chilean horsemen, good hosts, shortly thereafter formed a magnificent escort for the Virgin of Carmen, the Patron Saint, who arrived to oversee as a mother would, a celebration of her children. The national horsemen, in their typical attire, would troop by soon afterwards with Chilean flags, raising a cloud of dust that failed to drown out the fervent applause.

Puede decirse que arriba de la montura, con el traje adecuado, el hombre y la mujer irradian una gallardía que difícilmente se iguala de otra manera. La manta abriga al jinete mientras lo reviste con sobrios colores, el sombrero añade un toque de señorío y nobleza a su silueta, y las botas traslucen seguridad y firmeza. La vestimenta también sabe adornar a la mujer, adaptándose lo necesario para hacer que aflore su delicadeza y elegancia. Del mismo modo, los atuendos de otros países juegan a ser un marco que realza la personalidad del jinete, dibujando, tanto como la bandera, el retrato de un país. Estas estampas a caballo se conjugaron con la magnífica presentación que ofrecieron los jinetes indios, recordando nuestras raíces prehispánicas. La medialuna del parque se convirtió en escenario de proezas de “indios” y criollos, que disputaban el mejor dominio de sus monturas, y hasta de batallas campales, como el reñido asalto a una diligencia en los caminos coloniales.  It may be said that when mounted, with the appropriate attire, men and women radiate a gallantry that is difficult to match in any other way. The cloak keeps the rider warm while dressing him in somber colours, the hat adds a touch of lordliness and nobility to his silhouette, and the boots reveal security and solidity. The clothing is also appropriate for women, making the necessary adaptations to their delicacy and elegance. In the same manner, the attire of other countries serves as a framework to emphasize the personality of the rider, reflecting, as does its flag, the portrait of a country. These equine images are combined with the magnificent presentation offered by the indigenous horsemen, reminding us of our prehispanic roots. The crescent shaped park becomes a scene of the feats of “Indians” and locals, competing for the best horsemanship, and even of fierce battles, like the hard-fought attack on a coach in colonial roads.

Ramón Cardemil fue uno de los grandes jinetes del rodeo chileno, acaso el mejor. Un campeón histórico que ganó siete veces el Campeonato Nacional, para convertirse en una leyenda viviente del mundo corralero. Fundador del Criadero Santa Elba –nombrado así en homenaje a su esposa– este hombre sencillo, alegre y dinámico sacó al rodeo de su condición de mero pasatiempo campesino hasta convertirlo en un deporte consagrado. Sobran razones para entender el luto que cubrió a la familia del rodeo ante la partida del “Príncipe de los Huasos”, como alguna vez se lo llamó, con 90 años cumplidos, el 8 de septiembre de 2007 en Curicó. Durante la Semana de la Chilenidad, la Escuadra Ecuestre Chilena hizo una pausa, para despedir la figura del gran campeón ausente, que ahora cabalga en mejores praderas. Ramón Cardemil was one of the great riders, if not the greatest, of the Chilean rodeo. A historic champion who, in winning the National Championship seven times, became a living legend of the sport. The founder of the Santa Elba Breeder –so named in honour of his wife– this simple, happy and dynamic man took the rodeo out of being a mere rural pastime, and made it into a recognized sport. There are more than enough reasons for understanding the mourning that engulfed the rodeo family at the passing of the “Prince of the Huasos”, as he was once referred to, at 90 years of age, on the 8th of September 2007 in Curicó. During Chilean National Identity Week, the Chilean Equestrian Squad made a pause, to say farewell to the great absent champion, who now rides in better fields. Entre las tantas fiestas del campo, ninguna logra la convocatoria y resonancia del Rodeo. Aquí es cuando se lucen en todo su vigor el hombre y el caballo, implicados en una tarea conjunta que exige el más alto grado de compenetración, de eficacia, de auténtica destreza.

Among the many rural festivities, none has the attraction and the impact of the Rodeo. This is where, in all their vigour, man and horse stand out, bound together in a task that demands the highest level of cooperation, of efficacity, of genuine skill.

Si ya se mencionó el rasgo familiar como típicamente chileno, y como enfoque necesario para calar hondo en la identidad del país, aquí, en el Rodeo, esto se percibe como en pocas partes. Una medialuna es un microcosmos. En ella se concentra todo cuanto representa mejor la vida rural de los valles centrales. Y por supuesto, se presenta en compañía, no hay jinete que cabalgue solitario, cada uno atrae sus vínculos más estrechos a este lugar, que se inunda con el calor de la familiaridad. Padres, hijos y nietos están viéndose unos a otros, sea entre el público o entre los competidores; cada giro del galope es observado y celebrado por la tribuna, que además bulle con vida propia entre las conversaciones, casi como una fiesta independiente de la que transcurre más abajo.

If the family trait has been already mentioned as typically Chilean, and as a necessary focus for digging deep into the country’s identity, here, in the Rodeo, is where this can be perceived as in few other places. A crescent is a microcosm. In it is concentrated what best represents the rural life of the central valleys. And of course, he comes in company; as no horseman rides alone, each one attracts his closest ones to this place, which is impregnated with familial warmth. Parents, children and grandchildren are in view of each other, whether it be as spectator or competitor. Each round of galloping is observed and applauded from the gallery, which seethes with its own life of conversations, almost as if it were a festivity independent of what is occurring down below.

Mientras el novillo escapa o es atajado por el caballo, el arte de la rienda se va probando ante miradas expertas y también se va traspasando de una generación a otra. Suenan las músicas que el campo reconoce como propias, las conversaciones fluyen con amenidad, las risas o el sobresalto acompañan los ensayos de los jinetes más pequeños, el aplauso saluda a los más experimentados, y en todo este ambiente se desprende el mismo aroma: chilenidad.

While the calf either escapes or is trapped by the horse, the art of the rein is being demonstrated before expert eyes and is also being transmitted from one generation to the next. The music recognized by the countryside as its own is heard, conversations flow agreeably, laughter or a start accompany the trials of the smaller riders, applause greets the more experienced, and in all of this atmosphere floats the same aroma: Chilean identity.

Los jinetes que esperan el comienzo de la competencia, son la imagen radiante de un solo cuerpo, afianzado estrechamente por lazos de afecto, de tradiciones y afinidades que se prolongan de unos en otros, en un diálogo admirable de permanencia y renovación. El vigor de esta “espiritualidad” tan propia de la vida campestre se traspasa al ambiente que los rodea, marcando sus fiestas, sus alegrías y también sus penas con una nota que vibra en todos y los hace sentirse miembros de esa familia amplia y diversa que se llama Chile. 44

The riders while waiting for the competition to begin, they are the radiant image of one single body, held together by links of affection, by traditions and affinities stretching from one to another, in an admirable dialogue of permanence and renewal. The vigour of this “spirituality”, so peculiar to rural life, goes beyond the surrounding atmosphere, imbuing its festivities, its joys as well as its sorrows with a tone that all share, and makes them feel members of this ample and diverse family called Chile.

Aquí, en esta Semana dedicada a pulsar las cuerdas de la identidad profunda, el espíritu nacional se hace sentir como un ventarrón que anima las banderas, hacen ondear con gracia los chamantos y hasta parece convertir la polvareda en algo más, en una bruma que mitifica el trote de los jinetes y los convierte en imágenes vivas, trayendo a la memoria mil otras estampas difusas del pasado –ese pasado por todos compartido– que aquí recuperan el color y cabalgan hacia el futuro.  Here, in this Week dedicated to taking the pulse of profound identity, the national spirit makes itself felt like a gust of wind that stirs the flags, that make the ponchos wave graciously and even to transform the dust into something more, into a mist which mythicizes the trot of the riders and converts them into live images, bringing to mind a thousand other diffuse scenes of the past –that past shared by all– that here regain colour and ride into the future.

El alcalde Francisco de la Maza es una figura muy reconocida en el escenario público. Sus facetas política y profesional, sin embargo, parecen acaparar la mayor atención, cuando existe otra dimensión también, menos masiva si se quiere, pero profunda: la del hombre ligado a la tierra. Este vínculo, discreto como suelen serlo las grandes raíces, genera el impulso con que alimenta sus demás actividades. Su enfoque acerca del mundo de la identidad demuestra una amplitud característica: “Una de mis motivaciones principales, algo que siempre me ha llamado la atención, es la identidad nacional. Me parece que, en ese sentido, desde que nuestro país se abrió al mundo, ha ido cambiando: se siente más seguro, sale a invertir afuera, etc. El año 1992, como concejal del alcalde Joaquín Lavín, pensé que se debía buscar un enfoque importante en relación a este aspecto, el de la visión de país. “La idea me vino luego de algunos viajes realizados en el servicio público a Europa, sobre todo a España, donde cada localidad festeja su día y toda la gente sale a celebrar sanamente su identidad, como ocurre en las Fallas de Valencia, o en Barcelona para el día de San Juan, o también en Inglaterra, con el Cambio de Guardia. En Chile nos sucede, en cambio, que si bien la naturaleza nos ha dado mucho, como pueblo nos hemos ‘creído el cuento’ bastante poco. 54

Mayor Francisco de la Maza is a well recognized public figure. His political and professional facets, nevertheless, seem to attract most attention, while there is another side to him, less well known if you wish, but that of a man close to the earth. This link, as discreet as often are deep roots, is what motivates his other activities. His approach to the world of identity demonstrates a characteristicly broad outlook: “One of my main motivations, something which has always attracted my attention, is national identity. It seems to me that, in this matter, ever since our country opened up to the outside world, it has been changing: it feels more secure, it invests outside of the country, etc. In 1992, as a councillor of Mayor Joaquín Lavin, I thought that an important approach to this aspect should be sought, that of a country vision. “The idea came to me after some travel on public service to Europe, especially to Spain, where each locality celebrates its day and everyone comes out to celebrate wholesomely its identity, as happens in the celebrations of the feast of Saint Joseph in Valencia or in Barcelona for the day of San Juan, or even in England with the Changing of the Guard. In Chile it has happened, on the contrary, that even as nature has been generous with us, as a country we have been very little conscious of this.

“Recuerdo haber planteado al alcalde Lavín que teníamos que buscar algo relacionado con la identidad y organizarlo en el período de Fiestas Patrias. Empezamos a hablar con los huasos, y abordando el asunto en casa de Felipe Bunster, junto a Luis Iván Muñoz, se me ocurrió proponerles invitar a Agustín Edwards, para tantear si algo de esta naturaleza le entusiasmaría. Efectivamente así se hizo. Tres días después me llamó Luis Iván para contarme que la idea había sido bien acogida, y se le había dado el nombre de ‘Semana de la Chilenidad’. “Así empezó. Pensamos en dos fines de semanas, en programar actividades, artesanía, rodeo... y partió el año ’94 en el Parque Araucano”. Como ocurre en los grandes proyectos, implicando un corazón grande y una imaginación valiente, la Semana de la Chilenidad requirió el vigoroso compromiso de sus creadores. Todos ellos estuvieron dispuestos a poner su parte para dar firmeza a este proyecto, que tenía mucho de visionario y de idealista. Así lo recuerda el alcalde de la Maza:

“I recall having put it to Mayor Lavin that we had to look for something related to identity and organize it during the Independence Day Celebrations. We began conversations with the “huasos”, and in discussing the matter in Felipe Buster’s house, together with Luis Iván Muñoz, it occurred to me to suggest that we invite Agustín Edwards, to ascertain whether something of this nature could provoke his enthusiasm. In effect that was how it was done. Three days later Luis Iván telephoned to tell me that the idea had been well received, and given the name of �Chilean National Identity Week�. “That is how it started. We envisaged two weekends, programming activities, handicrafts, rodeo... and it began in 1994 in Araucano Park”. As happens with grand projects, implying great heart and courageous imagination, Chilean National Identity Week demanded the utmost commitment of its creators. All of them were disposed to make their contributions to back this project, which was quite visionary and idealistic. That is how Mayor de la Maza remembers it: 55

“Con la partida de esta idea, se constituyó también el comité de la Federación de Criadores y la Municipalidad de Las Condes, donde el primer gerente fue Felipe Bunster. La sacamos adelante con un esfuerzo gigantesco; había que demostrar que era una actividad atractiva, pero también había que inventarlo todo. Hablamos con Carabineros, nos conseguimos el Cuadro Verde, pues sabíamos que convocaba al público. Hablamos con la Federación de Rodeo, para marcar una fecha, y de eso nació el ‘rodeo padre e hijo’. Desde regiones surgió el interés por participar en la muestra de artesanía. Conversamos con un par de restaurantes, para que establecieran la muestra gastronómica, y montamos un escenario para la participación de artistas nacionales, como los Huasos Quincheros.

“With the implementation of this idea, the committee of the Federation of Breeders of the Municipality of Las Condes was also constituted, the first manager of which was Felipe Bunster. We brought it into being with an immense effort; it had to be shown that it was an attractive activity, but everything had to be invented. We spoke to the Police, we got the Green Square, since we knew that this would bring in the public. We spoke to the Rodeo Federation, to fix a date, and from this the ‘father and son rodeo’ was born. Interest in participating in the show of handicraft came from the regions. We spoke to a couple of restaurants, for them to organize the gastronomic aspect, and we set up a stage for the participation of national artists, like the Huasos Quincheros.

“Hasta el año 2000 la Semana de la Chilenidad tuvo lugar en el Parque Araucano. En él habíamos comprobado que la idea funcionaba. Pero cuando fui electo alcalde empecé a imaginar otro lugar más potente. Habíamos crecido, la comuna de Vitacura ya estaba participando en el evento

“Up until the year 2000 the Chilean National Identity Week took place in the Araucano Park. At that location we had proven that the concept was workable. But when I was elected mayor I began to think about a larger venue. We had grown, the commune of Vitacura had already

desde 1996… Hubo algunas resistencias al cambio de ubicación, pero una vez que visitamos el nuevo lugar –el Parque Padre Hurtado–, Agustín Edwards comentó que se sentía como en su fundo de la Compañía. ‘¡Por eso lo queremos hacer acá!’, le contesté yo. En 90 días hicimos la Medialuna, iluminamos el Parque… Fue el doble de gente que en el Parque Araucano. También lo profesionalizamos con un gerente y una administración, para que la obra permaneciera más allá de las personas”. No obstante este recuento de logros, el alcalde no se duerme en los laureles: “Yo le sumaría nuevas cosas. Creo que fue idea de la Federación, y un gran acierto, el incorporar a otras naciones. Seguramente por los contactos del mundo equino –visitas a ferias rurales en Argentina y Perú– se han incorporado otros países, lo que ha potenciado esta actividad. La presentación de las Bandas nos acompaña desde el año 2006, cuando coincidimos con una actividad del Ejército”.

been participating in the event since 1996...There was some resistance to the idea of a change of venue, but once we visited the new place –the Padre Hurtado Park–, Agustín Edwards commented that he felt as if he were at his farm la Compañía. ‘That is why we want to do it here!’ I replied. In 90 days we constructed the grandstand of the crescent, we installed the park lighting... the spectators were twice as many as in the Araucano Park. We also professionalized the event by appointing a manager and an administration, so that the work could outlast changes in personalities”. In spite of this tale of success, the mayor does not rest on his laurels: “I would add new things. I believe that it was the Federation’s idea, and a great one, to incorporate other countries. Surely through the contacts in the Equine world –visits to rural fairs in Argentina and Perú–other countries have been included, which has benefitted this activity. The presentation of Bands has been present since the year 2006, when we coincided with an activity of the Army”.

es un Hombre a Caballo… When Chile is a Horseman...

En la Semana de la Chilenidad, el asistente encuentra a cada paso la asociación del hombre y el caballo. Esta antigua camaradería da origen a momentos espectaculares. El Cuadro Verde arrebata ovaciones. Su verdadero virtuosismo con las riendas logra despertar asombro incluso en gente familiarizada con el ambiente de las cabalgaduras. Otro tanto hace la Alta Escuela de Caballería del Ejército, que junto con su destreza, parecen traer consigo la Historia de los jinetes militares, tan gloriosa y tan cercana para todos los presentes. Sus evoluciones en la explanada son acompañadas por una vibrante banda instrumental, creando un ambiente completamente único.

During Chilean National Identity Week, the spectator encounters at every step the association of man and horse. This old camaraderie gives rise to spectacular moments. The Green Square wins applause. Its genuine virtuosity with the reins ma nages to arouse astonishment even among those familiar with the world of horsemanship. Another contribution is that of the horsemen of the High Cavalry School or the Army, which together with skill, seems to bring with it the History of military cavalry, so glorious and so close to those present. Their movements on the parade ground are accompanied by a stirring instrumental band, creating a unique atmosphere.

Ese mismo caballo, ahora dócil y elegante, se incorpora a otra imagen muy propia del campo: los coches. Antes una necesidad de transporte, ahora la conducción de carruajes se ha transformado en un deporte con gran vitalidad, pujante, que acapara la atención de maestros extranjeros y hábiles manos chilenas, para exhibir una nota común de toda su pericia y elegancia.

That same horse, now tame and elegant, can be glimpsed through a different prism very typical of the countryside. That of the coaches. Once a necessary means of transport, coach driving has been transformed into a sport, of great vitality and vigour, which captures the attention of foreign exponents and dextrous Chilean hands, to demonstrate a common thread of skill and elegance.

No menos se puede decir de los Caballos de Paso Peruanos, que llegan como invitados para el deleite de todos; la gracia del trote que distingue a estos animales, junto al hermoso atuendo de sus jinetes, pintan una imagen llena de encanto, que enriquece singularmente las jornadas del Parque.

No less can be said of the Horses of the Peruvian Gait, which come as invitees to the delight of all and sundry; the grace ot the trot that distinguishes these animals, together with the beautiful attire of their riders, create an enchanting image, which significantly enriches the performances in the Park.

Así, quien tenga ocasión de presenciar todo esto en una sola tarde, descubrirá que las tradiciones y virtudes del campo no se han oscurecido. Al contrario, emiten un claro fulgor de amanecer.

Thus, whomsoever has the opportunity to experience all this in a single evening, will realize that the traditions and virtues of the countryside have not been dimmed. On the contrary they emit dawn´s clear light. 59

El alcalde Raúl Torrealba, a la cabeza de una de las comunas más pujantes y desarrolladas de la capital, no descuida el hecho que las relaciones y los estilos de vida en Vitacura se hallan muy ligados a su pasado rural. Es la certeza que lo acompaña como miembro importante de la Semana de la Chilenidad.

Mayor Raúl Torrealba, at the head of one of the more rapidly growing and developed communes of the capital, does not neglect the fact that Vitacura´s relations and life-styles are very much linked to their rural past. That is a certainty that accompanies him as an important participant in Chilean National Identity Week.

“Todo esto, Vitacura, eran terrenos de fundos, donde la existencia de todos los días llevaba el ritmo del campo, con sus tradiciones vivas. Ahora somos una comuna llena de proyectos urbanos, empresariales, con mucho movimiento, lo cual impacta en un primer momento a cualquiera que nos vea, pero la verdadera esencia no está en eso. Los anhelos de nuestros vecinos miran mucho más a la vida de campo, más tranquila, más retirada, que toma distancia de tanto ruido y tanta carrera. Aquí la gente, a la vuelta de su trabajo, llega a su casa a cambiar de ritmo, �lejos del mundanal ruido�, y es cuando surge esa raíz del campo que al final todos compartimos”.

“All of Vitacura was farmland, the everyday existence of which functioned at the rhythm of the countryside, with its live traditions. Today we are a commune full of urban and business projects, with much movement, which is what impresses at first sight, but that is not its true essence. The desires of our neighbours are much more oriented towards a rural life-style, quieter, more retired, distancing itself from so much noise and hustle. Here the people, back from work, get home to a change of rhythm, ‘far from the noisy world’, and that is when the rural roots, that we all share, emerge”.

To put it another way, it is the daily conjuring up of a life-style better adjusted to the national psychology, traditionally inclined to social relations and space to cultivate them, something lost with the quickened pace of modern life.

Making a link with this observation, the mayor notes the transcendence of Chilean National Identity Week:

Haciendo un puente con esta observación, el alcalde apunta a la trascendencia de la Semana de la Chilenidad:

“I too feel the need to escape from the hustle and bustle of life in Santiago, with pressures everyone so formidably. It is like a need to go back to the beginning, and the beginning is in the countryside. That is the cradle of our identity, what distinguishes us. And that is the great contribution of Chilean National Identity Week, something I sensed at the outset which always motivates my participation. One enters a different atmosphere, and in the process, seems to reencounter the most profound memories.

“Yo también siento eso, la necesidad de escaparme del trajín de la vida en Santiago, que presiona de manera tan formidable a todas las personas. Es como una necesidad de retornar al origen, y ese origen está en el campo. Esa es la cuna de nuestra identidad, lo que nos distingue. Y ese es el gran aporte de la Semana de la Chilenidad, es algo que percibí desde el inicio y lo que siempre me motiva a participar. Uno se interna en un espacio diferen66

te, y a medida que se camina parece que los recuerdos más entrañables vienen a recibirlo. “Basta observar a la gente. Llegan apurados como típicos santiaguinos, pero de a poco se van tranquilizando y el humor les cambia, mejora, hay más sonrisas y cercanía. Creo que esa tranquilidad viene de descubrirse como parte de la misma familia, o en este caso, de la misma tradición, del mismo pasado. ¡A esa altura, los apuros sólo nos afectan a los que tenemos responsabilidad de organizar o participar en alguna de las muestras, espectáculos, competencias y tanta cosa que se junta! Pero incluso en eso, trabajando, uno descansa porque se siente lleno”. Las palabras del Alcalde Torrealba reflejan el cálido compromiso que lo liga con la Semana de la Chilenidad, de la cual se ha transformado en impulsor como autoridad de la Municipalidad de Vitacura, junto a la Municipalidad de Las Condes y la Federación de Criadores de Caballos Chilenos. Su figura no está sola en las labores; muy por el contrario, el Alcalde viene rodeado con sus hijos, nietos, amigos… pues la Semana de la Chilenidad parece oficiar como un gran e improvisado salón donde las amistades se reavivan, repasando las afinidades profundas que alimentan sus lazos, dejándose envolver por un vigoro soplo de autenticidad en que el estilo globalizado de la metrópoli parece lejano. “La Semana de la Chilenidad –subraya el Alcalde– es una verdadera proeza. Todo ese mundo que recibe al visitante es fruto de mucho esfuerzo, de la colaboración de todos y de las ganas que ponemos para levantar esta muestra. Queremos que las cosas se hagan bien, porque Chile se merece esta labor de rescate. Para muchos, y eso lo he comprobado, es el primer lugar donde han visto tradiciones que de otra manera se estaban quedando sin espacio para manifestarse. También es emocionante ver la vitalidad que esto tiene. Nuestro mérito fue saber colocar esta puerta y abrirla, nada más. Las tradiciones estaban vivas, esperando su momento para ayudarnos, para hacernos sentir miembros de una familia común, con una historia compartida. Así también es posible mirar y construir juntos el futuro del país”.

They arrive in a hurry, typical of the inhabitants of Santiago, but little by little they calm down, their mood changes, gets better, and there are more smiles and togetherness. I believe that this tranquillity comes from discovering themselves as members of the same family, or in this case, of the same tradition, the same past. At this stage, the only anxious ones are those of us who have the responsibility of organizing or participating in some of the displays, spectacles, competitions and whatever! But even in that, working, one is at rest because one feels fulfilled”. Mayor Torrealba’s words reflect the warmth of the commitment that links him to Chilean National Identity Week, of which he has become an organizer in his role as an official of the Municipality of Vitacura, together with the Municipality of Las Condes and the Federation of Chilean Horse Breeders. He is not alone in his efforts; much to the contrary, the Mayor comes to the task surrounded by his children, grandchildren, friends... thus Chilean National Identity Week seems to function as a great and improvised salon where friendships are reborn, renewing the deep affinities that feed its links, letting them evolve through a vigourous breath of authenticity from which the globalized style of the metropolis seems distant. “Chilean National Identity Week –underlines the Mayor– is a genuine feat. This world that receives the visitor is the result of much effort, of the collaboration of all and sundry and of our endeavors to realize this event. We want the things to be well done, because Chile deserves this labour of rescue. For many, and that I have experienced, it is the first place where they have seen traditions that otherwise are being left without an opportunity to be shown. It is also moving to see the vitality that this has. Our merit was to know how to install this door and then open it, nothing more. The traditions were alive, waiting for their moment to help us, to make us feel members of a common family, with a shared history. In this way it is also possible to visualize and build together the future of the country”. 67

en Nuestros Corazones Sentiment that Stirs in Our Hearts

Entre los eventos celebrados día tras día, uno de los más recordados fue el que hizo memoria de la historia chilena, recuperando en montajes teatrales, con lujo de detalles, las batallas y personajes que han inscrito sus nombres en nuestra historia. El sueño de un país independiente germinó en el corazón de nuestros próceres, quienes no dudaron en sacrificar sus vidas al servicio de esta idea, y echaron así los cimientos del Chile que hoy conocemos. Esa muestra de coraje sigue alimentando nuestro más legítimo orgullo, porque se puede decir que los chilenos de hoy habitan el sueño que tuvieron nuestros antepasados hace casi doscientos años.

Among the events celebrated day after day, one of the most memorable was that which recalled Chilean history, reproducing in theatrical scenes, in great detail, the battles and personalities that have their names inscribed in our history books. The dream of an independent country was born in the hearts of our forefathers, who did not hesitate to sacrifice their lives in the service of this idea, and thus laid the basis for the Chile we know today. This display of courage continues to feed our most legitimate pride, because it can be said that today’s Chileans have the same dream as had our predecessors almost two hundred years ago.

On the same day of this event the pilots of the Chilean Air Force Acrobatics Squadron, the Falcons, painted the sky with the colours of our national flag. 69

Sonidos de la Tierra Nuestra Sounds of Our Land

La música y el baile son parte del legado de una generación a otra. El avance de esta herencia a través del tiempo se convierte en una crónica viva, donde el alma del pueblo va estampando sus alegrías y tristezas, sus aspiraciones y temores, creando joyas de originalidad, según una visión propia, reconocible y compartida con la cual examinan los grandes dilemas de la existencia. Chile entero “suena” en una cueca, un trote nortino, un vals chilote… bien lo saben nuestros mejores artistas, que acuden a esa cantera inagotable, la tradición popular, para encontrar ideas y visiones que combinan luego con las de su propio talento. Así, en la Semana de la Chilenidad no podían faltar los representantes de nuestra música: Desde los aires más tradicionales que amenizaban el ambiente todos los dias, hasta las presentacio Music and dance are part of the legacy of one generation to the next. The advance of this inheritance through time becomes a living chronicle, in which the soul of the people record their joys and sorrows, their hopes and fears, creating jewels of originality, in accordance with their own vision, recognizable and shared, with which they examine the great dilemmas of existence. All Chile responds to a �cueca�, a �trote nortino�, a waltz from Chiloé... a fact well known to our best artists, who resort to this inexhaustible source, popular tradition, to find ideas and visions which they meld with their own talent. Thus, in Chilean National Identity Week, the representatives of our music cannot fail to be present. From the most traditional airs which liven up our atmosphere daily, to the live performances which culminate with Los Jaivas and the massive audience which they attract. 78

Simultaneously dance competitions, in which the spark of the �huasos� and the grace of the �chinas� are applauded by the spectators, take place. Special mention merits the competition organized for children, who rival in talent the older dancers, provoking a deep sensation of continuity in those present.

Los Jaivas, un ícono viviente de la música nacional enraizada en lo popular, ofrecieron una presentación en la explanada del parque, atrayendo a un mar de público que sorprendió a los propios organizadores. Este arrastre es una justa recompensa para la banda, que ha hecho su carrera llevando por el mundo sonidos extraídos de la tradición folklórica y mezclados con aires contemporáneos.

Los Jaivas, a living icon of national music of popular origin, performed on the esplanade of the park, attracting a massive audience, which even surprised the organizers themselves. This popularity is a merited recompense for the group, which has made its career by making known to the world sounds derived from traditional folklore mixed with contemporary airs.

que Moldean Excelencia Hands of the Earth which Mould Excellence

Muchas veces sucede que el recuerdo de un lugar queda asociado a un objeto; tanto, que la evocación de ese sitio se ajustará al valor de las cosas que llegan desde él. Si América evocaba el oro para los antiguos conquistadores europeos; si el marfil recuerda a África, si la porcelana trae la imagen de China o el mármol la de Italia... es fácil comprender la importancia enorme de la labor del artesano, por cuyas manos simples pasan las materias primas de la tierra para convertirse en imágenes del país, tan elocuentes y memorables como jamás podrá serlo ninguna embajada del exterior.

On many occasions it happens that a place becomes associated with an object, such that, the memory of that place is equated to the things that come from it. If America evoked gold for the old European conquistadores; if ivory reminds one of Africa, if porcelain brings with it the image of China or marble that of Italy... it is easy to understand the enormous importance of the work of the craftsman, through whose hands pass earth´s raw material to be converted into images of the country, as eloquent and memorable as could never be any embassy to the outside world.

Dice más de Chile una manta hilada con esmero que un buen discurso; y por ello es uno de los obsequios frecuentes a los dignatarios extranjeros. Habla más de nuestra riqueza una joya de lapislázuli que una estadística, una canción inspirada que un grueso tratado…

A carefully woven poncho tells you more about Chile than a fine speech, which is why it is frequently a present given to foreign dignitaries. A jewel of lapislazuli tells more about our riches than a statistic, an inspired song more than an important treaty...

Paradójicamente, esta capacidad de elaborar la imagen del país para el mundo han sido confiadas a manos casi salidas de la tierra. A su vez, la nobleza de esta labor ha ido moldeando a los artesanos, que de generación en generación han ido remontando el camino de la excelencia y han creado escuelas de perfección en el seno de las familias, enseñando el aprecio por un trabajo bien hecho, cultivando el afán por extraer todas las maravillas que las cosas esconden entre sus posibilidades.

Paradoxically, this capacity to forge an image of the country for the outside world has been entrusted to hands almost derived from the earth. In its turn, the nobility of this task has eventually moulded the artists, so that from one generation to the next, they have gone on climbing the path of excellence and have created schools of perfection in the heart of the family, teaching appreciation for a job well done, cultivating the desire to extract all the marvels that are concealed in their possibilities.

El Prototipo de Nuestro Campo The Prototype of Our Countryside

El campo no está reñido con el refinamiento. Antes bien, ha sido capaz de cultivarlo. El traje campesino evolucionó hasta generar una variante de gala que va ganando admiración y espacio en la vida social, trayendo de vuelta la fragancia intemporal de los valores tradicionales, de los cuales emergió la nacionalidad. La estampa del huaso con sus aperos ha recuperado su merecido prestigio, presentando un tipo humano afirmativo y auténtico, opuesto a la agitación y frecuente superficialidad de las agotadas metrópolis. Esta diferencia, sin embargo, lejos de ser un terco disgusto con el futuro, representa más bien un aporte, un rejuvenecimiento que nuestra sociedad sabe reconocer como tal. Quizás, incluso lo estaba esperando, como quien aguarda un cambio de marea para hacerse a la mar. ¡Que esa pujanza de los valores del campo, con todo lo que tienen para aportar al enriquecimiento de nuestra vida, siga abriéndose camino en el corazón de nuestro pueblo!

 The countryside is not incompatible with refinement. In the past it has been well capable of cultivating it. Country dweller�s attire has evolved to a variant of elegance which has gone on to win admiration and acceptance in social life, bringing with it the intemporal fragrance of traditional values, from which nationality emerged. The image of the “huaso” with his accoutrements has recovered its merited prestige, representing a positive and authentic human being, as opposed to the hurly burly and frequent superficiality of the worn out metropolis. This difference, nevertheless, far from being a stubborn disgust with the future, is rather a contribution, a rejuvenation that our society can recognize as such. Perhaps it has been even awaiting it, just as one waits for a change of the tide to put out to sea. May this strength of the rural values, with all that it has to contribute to enriching our lives, continue finding its way into our people�s hearts! 89

La oscuridad cubre el exterior de la medialuna, diluyendo las cosas en siluetas sin nombre definido, pero al interior las luces siguen encendidas, manteniendo la claridad de las formas y colores. Tal vez podríamos ver en esta imagen ocasional una última metáfora de la Semana de la Chilenidad. Pues, en un mundo que se diluye en una globalización voraz, la noción clara de ser quienes somos, con nuestras formas y colores inconfundibles, juega un papel excepcional: preservar lo que hemos sido, para conquistar plenamente aquello que seremos. Que esta gran aventura de la Chilenidad siga viva, pujante, para amplificar la voz típica de nuestra tierra en el gran concierto de las naciones modernas. 96

It is nightfall. Darkness covers the exterior of the crescent, dissolving objects into indefinite silhouettes, but in the interior the lights are still lit, maintaining the clarity of forms and colours. Perhaps we can find in this occasional imagery a final metaphor for Chilean National Identity Week. Given that in a world which dissolves in a fierce globalization, the clear notion of being who we are, with our unmistakable forms and colours, plays an exceptional role in preserving what we have been, in order to fully conquer what we shall be. May this great adventure of Chilean National Identity stay alive, powerful, in order to amplify the typical voice of our land in the great concert of modern nations.
