FOLLOW YOUR HEART, DO WHAT YOU’RE PASSIONATE ABOUT, AND DON’T WORRY ABOUT
‘WHAT IF.’ LIFE WILL PUT YOU WHERE YOU NEED TO BE.
Yes, we’re talking about Vernon Leonard Davis, the celebrated former NFL tight end whose name is synonymous with dedication and excellence. Born and raised in the D.C. area, Vernon’s relentless work ethic defined his career. Known for staying after practice to catch hundreds of extra passes from the JUGS machine, and continuing the grind at home catching tennis balls, his commitment to mastering his craft resulted in an illustrious NFL journey. Spanning the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos, and Washington Commanders, his career provided invaluable lessons that have fueled his personal and professional success. But what truly drives Vernon? It’s more than success — it’s his unwavering commitment to his craft, his family, and his community Vernon retired after the 2019 season, but the NFL profoundly shaped his approach to life. This transition was marked by a passion that had been with him since childhood: the arts. Few know that Vernon’s love for creativity led him to change his major to Studio Art while at the University of Maryland, nurturing a talent for painting. “I’ve always had a special place in my heart for the arts,” he shares. This creative drive naturally led him to acting, a pursuit he began while playing for the 49ers. Throughout his football career, Vernon explored acting, landing roles in films and TV shows.
For Vernon, the shift from football to acting and entrepreneurship felt seamless. “I found a lot of similarities between preparing for a football game and preparing for an acting role,” he explains. During the COVID-19 lockdown, his acting career gained momentum. “I began doing a lot of films, and my career took o from there,” he adds.

© Best Version Media
Today, Vernon is fully immersed in his acting career, appearing in major projects such as The Ritual Killer alongside Morgan Freeman, A Day to Die with Bruce Willis, and Please Don’t Feed the Children, directed by Destry Allyn Spielberg.
Looking ahead, Vernon isn’t just acting — he’s creating. “I’m working on a film called Lake Vernon, where a group of people goes to a lake for the summer, and chaos ensues,” he reveals. His vision is clear: to pursue acting and storytelling for the rest of his life.
The Social Media Influencer. Another facet of Vernon’s life is his role as a social media influencer. “I use my social media to connect with my football fans and new fans from acting and business,” he says. Social media also serves as a platform for fun and authenticity. “Incorporating my kids into my content has been a lot of fun!” His advice for aspiring content creators? “Be authentic to yourself. Over time, people will appreciate what you put out there.”
A Family Man. Reflecting on life after football, Vernon says his family remains his greatest priority. “My family is everything to me,” he shares, noting that fatherhood is one of life’s greatest gifts. Retirement has allowed him to spend more quality time with his children, a privilege he cherishes.
Commitment to Wellness. Health and wellness have always been central to Vernon’s life. From massages to floating spas, his selfcare routine is a cornerstone of his physical and mental well-being. “Self-care is incredibly important,” he emphasizes.
THE VONTAE DAVIS FAMILY FOUNDATION
Initially named The Vernon Davis Foundation, it was later changed to The Vontae Davis Family Foundation in honor of his brother, who passed away. Davis's commitment to his community is evident through his foundation, which originally focused on promoting art education. In 2023, he expanded its mission to prioritize the overall health, education, and well-being of children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The foundation provides scholarships, grants, learning materials, and more, all aimed at helping those in need.
Vernon hopes his achievements and community e orts leave a lasting legacy, not only in his beloved D.C. community but also in the San Francisco Bay Area. “Giving back to those less fortunate and making an impact means the world to me,” he says, reflecting his unwavering commitment to making a di erence.

© Best Version Media
A Lasting Legacy. Vernon Davis’s journey in the NFL has shaped him into the man he is today. Reflecting on his career, he points to a pivotal moment in 2008 when his coach, Mike Singletary, publicly challenged him after a loss to the Seattle Seahawks. “It was the turning point in my life and career,” he says.
Today, as a father, actor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, Vernon continues to make an impact. His message for young people, particularly those in McLean, is simple: “Follow your heart, do what you’re passionate about, and don’t worry about ‘what if.’ Life will put you where you need to be.”
As for the future, Davis’s aspirations are clear. “I want to be remembered for being an incredible father and for making a positive impact on people’s lives,” he says.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR VERNON DAVIS?
Vernon’s ventures include:
• Author: His book, Playing Ball: Life Lessons from My Journey to the Super Bowl and Beyond, reflects on his career and the lessons learned along the way.
• Sports Owner: Vernon co-owns the D.C. Power Football Club and the Brisbane Bullets, demonstrating his enduring love for sports.
• Advocate: An advocate for the U.S. Curling Team and has traveled to three Olympics with the team
• Farmer: Embracing sustainability, he owns a farm that connects him to the land.
• Producer and Actor: In February, his mockumentary comedy series Matchpoint will debut, adding another milestone to his creative portfolio.
For Vernon Davis, life after the NFL is not a winding-down but a scaling-up. His journey is far from over — it’s just beginning.

Learning Something New is the New Self Care

(and it’s not all bubble baths and candles)
JONI FOERTER Owner Furniture Rescue
I enjoy learning. I’m not in a classroom learning something but I don’t have to be. The opportunity to learn is everywhere. Walking down street, simply watching TV or doing something in our warehouse, which is where a lot of my learning time takes place.
By learning something new you are not stagnant; you are growing. It’s as if your soul is like a plant. Watering the plant helps it grow. Without water, a plant does not grow; it dies. When you nourish your soul it flows into your essence and your mind. Research shows that if we do not challenge ourselves, we get bored, which can lead to heart disease, and we die young. There are many benefits to the brain
when someone has new experiences. It increases dopamine, “the feel-good hormone.” It also allows your brain to build connections between neurons, which helps us retain information, which helps us all around. Research is looking into seeing if learning a new skill or an idea can prevent Alzheimer’s because of the e ects that learning has on our brains.
If you’re looking to learn something new — something you have never known before, start a new hobby or perhaps master a skill check out our on-line listing of classes. From our Furniture Painting Series to our One-on-One Project Work Shop we will help you build your skills and your confidence!

Unlocking Radiant Skin: Guide to Your Best Complexion Yet
MA – Derma Care
Healthy, radiant skin isn’t just about appearances—it’s about confidence, self-care, and feeling your best.
THE FOUNDATION:
Understanding Your Skin Type:

The key to e ective skincare is knowing your skin type. Each skin type has specific needs, and using the wrong products can exacerbate issues like acne, irritation, or dehydration.
Why Professional Treatments Matter:
While at-home skincare is crucial, professional treatments provide deeper benefits. Regular facials, chemical peels, and micro-needling can address concerns such as uneven texture, hyperpigmentation, and aging. These treatments remove dead skin cells, boost collagen production, and enhance the absorption of your skincare products.
The Role of Consistency:
One of the most common mistakes I see is inconsistency in skincare routines. Your skin thrives on routine! Cleansing, moisturizing, and applying sunscreen every day should be non-negotiable.
That said, it’s important to listen to your skin. Seasonal changes, stress, and hormonal shifts can a ect how your skin responds. Adjust your routine accordingly to maintain balance.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Healthy, radiant skin is the result of a partnership between you and your esthetician.
If you’re unsure where to start, schedule a consultation with a licensed esthetician. Together, we can create a plan to unlock your skin’s full potential. Contact me at www.dermacareva.com or give me a call at 571-606-3436.
Here’s to glowing skin and the confidence it brings!

Growing Your Company Through Strategic Acquisition
By ERIKA BAEZ-GRIMES Business Broker | Certified M&A Advisor | Commercial Real-Estate
When businesses think about growth, their first thoughts often turn to organic methods: developing new products, entering new markets, or ramping up sales e orts. While these strategies are important, one growth avenue often overlooked by small and midsized businesses is acquisition. Strategic acquisition can accelerate growth, diversify revenue streams, and position your company for long-term success in ways organic growth alone cannot achieve.
SO WHY CONSIDER AN ACQUISITION?
Acquisition allows businesses to bypass the time and resources required to build something from scratch. When done right, it’s a way to:
1. Access New Markets: By acquiring a company already operating in a desired market, you gain instant access to its customer base, distribution channels, and regional expertise.
2. Expand Product O erings: Acquiring a complementary business can help round out your o erings, making your company more valuable to customers and harder for competitors to replicate.
3. Leverage Synergies: Cost savings through shared resources, combined operations, and improved economies of scale can enhance profitability almost immediately.
4. Reduce Competition: Acquiring a competitor not only eliminates a rival but also strengthens your position in the market.
KEY STEPS IN THE ACQUISITION PROCESS
Successfully growing your business through acquisition requires a thoughtful and strategic approach. Here are the key steps:
1. Define Your Goals: Understand why you want to acquire another business. Is it for market expansion, technology, talent, or something else? Clear objectives will guide your search and evaluation process.
2. Identify Potential Targets: Look for businesses that align with your strategic goals. Consider factors such as industry fit, cultural alignment, and financial health.
3. Conduct Due Diligence: This step is critical. Review the target company’s financials, operations, customer contracts, and legal compliance. Don’t overlook cultural compatibility; mismatched cultures can derail post-acquisition integration.

4. Structure the Deal: Determine how the acquisition will be funded.
5. Plan Integration: Many acquisitions fail because of poor integration. Develop a detailed plan to combine operations, retain key employees, and communicate e ectively with stakeholders.
AVOIDING THE PITFALLS
While acquisitions o er immense opportunities, they also come with risks. Here are common pitfalls to consider:
1. Overpaying: Emotional decision-making can lead to overvaluing a target company. Stick to valuations backed by rigorous analysis.
2. Neglecting Cultural Fit: A misalignment of values and workplace culture can create friction that undermines the benefits of the acquisition.
3. Rushing the Process: Take the time to perform thorough due diligence. A rushed deal can lead to unforeseen liabilities.
REMEMBER TO KEEP YOUR GROWTH STRATEGY IN THE FOREFRONT!
Acquisition is not just for large corporations. With the right strategy, small and mid-sized businesses can leverage acquisitions to achieve rapid growth, diversify their o erings, and strengthen their competitive position. If you’re ready to explore how acquisitions can propel your business forward, take the first step by defining your goals and consulting with experienced professionals.
Growth through acquisition is not just a possibility—it’s a powerful strategy for business owners ready to think big.
WHY A BUSINESS BROKER IS IMPORTANT:
For many business owners, navigating the acquisition process can feel overwhelming. This is where a business broker can add immense value. Brokers bring expertise in valuing businesses, identifying acquisition targets, and negotiating deals. Their market knowledge and network can help you find opportunities that align with your goals while avoiding costly mistakes.

By JANINE FRANK CEO & Co-Founder of 2 Health Nuts
Not only is this a great time of year to “get nutty and declutter” but it really is a best practice for all year round! There is nothing better on a cold, snowy day than to tackle a good organizational project. Actually, any day, during any time of the year, would be a good one. This is coming from someone who channels her inner Monica Geller - if you know the tv show “Friends,” you just know. Seriously, it may be one of my favorite hobbies! :) It just makes me feel good, and more in-line and in-tune with life. Honestly, I would like to petition for “Organization” and “Declutter” to be one of the major wellness pillars, right up there with physical, financial, and emotional wellness. A girl can dream, right?
Here are just a handful of the many benefits decluttering & organizing can do for you:
• Reduces stress and anxiety
• Brings a sense of calmness
• Brings a sense of accomplishment
• Boosts productivity and focus
• Saves money
• Better functionality
Today I am sharing some of my top areas of organization that I strive to always keep in check, as well as some strategies on how to do so. There is no right or wrong - do what works for you. And by no means is this an end all, be all; it just skims the surface. There are so many peopleespecially via social media - that do this really, really well, and they have some amazing tips, tricks, and tools to help you stay on top of your decluttering e orts. It’s definitely become a big business.
One question I do get asked is “how often should you be decluttering/organizing?” While a great question, it, ultimately, goes back to what I shared before - do what works for you! Generally speaking, I keep my household pretty neat and organized most days of the year. I use January, April, July, and October as my time frame for more of a deep declutter. It definitely helps to put a friendly reminder in your calendar to help stay on top of things. In addition to using the calendar via my phone and computer, I love the “Day Designer Strategic Planner and Daily Agenda” for additional notes and reminders. It will be another game changer in keeping you organized.
#1: CLOTHING
I love organizing pretty much everything in my hometrust me, my husband will even tell you - but going through my closet may be at the top of the list. Doing this every few months will keep your fashion and style current, keep it seasonal, gauge what fits well, and see what you want to donate or sell. It also gives you a chance to see what pieces you would like to add to your wardrobe.
I will be the first to tell you that I do spend money on my clothes. Fashion is one of the things I absolutely love, and I do embrace a really good designer piece (or two or three… but who is counting). With that being said, I consign my clothes quite frequently. Whether it be online via Poshmark or ThredUp, or the local Fashion Exchange Consignment store in McLean, I am a huge fan. A great incentive to put some money back into your pocket or buy those pieces you need to add to your wardrobe.
For closet organization, I follow Jordyn Smith of “Ourpnw_ home” on Amazon. Simply type in the username via the search bar, then click to shop the storefront. Jordyn highlights amazing finds for all areas of your home but the closet options are probably my favorite!
#2: KITCHEN
While I am not in the business of throwing away food or being wasteful, this is a good time of year to go through your pantry (spices too!), fridge, and freezer. You would be surprised what gets lost in the shu le! This also includes food containers - nothing like having multiple tupperware tops that have warped in the dishwasher & taking up space - and everyday items like parchment paper, wax paper, etc. It’s inventory time!
If you really want to have a little fun with the decluttering, take a look at your glassware, dishware, pots and pans, cooking utensils, dish towels, appliances (i.e. Keurig, Air Fryer, Toaster, ), etc. What is in great shape? What is in not so great shape? What do you use the most? What could you try and sell or donate? Are any of these seasonal items that could be packed away for the future? Gone are the days of having a bunch of “stu .” We are looking for streamlined, practical, and functional! But, again, you have to do what works for you!
I begin by tackling one area at a time. I have made the mistake of doing it all at once and it can be overwhelming. Start by pulling everything out and give the area a good cleaning. No more drips, spills, or caked on messes. Yes, this includes the pantry! As you put items back, check expiration dates and use the smell test. I keep a running list of items that I have in the fridge that I can reference for future recipes, as well as frozen meats & prepared meals in the freezer.
If you are looking for a little help with meal prep, and using what you have on hand, I am a big fan of Ti ani Thiessan’s latest cookbook - “Here We Go Again: Recipes and Inspiration to Level Up Your Leftovers.” For my “Saved By The Bell” tv show fans, she played Kelly Kapowski. It will, truly, give you inspo on how to recreate foods you have, eliminate food waste, and even put money back into your pocket. I cannot tout it enough!
© Best Version Media
Here are some of my kitchen go-to’s:
• Vacuum Sealer: I just got one for Christmas and I love it! Not only does it preserve & protect your food by minimizing the risk of mold, bacteria, and freezerburn, it will extend shelf life, save you money in the long run, and is a huge space saver. Did I mention your food will just taste better and taste fresh too?
• Glass Containers: I really try to stay away from plastic and even foil if possible. It is inevitable we need to use them but I try to do so in moderation. If going to use, make sure your plastic does not contain BPA and complies with FDA regulations. Just a personal decision! Side Note: the plastic used with the Vacuum Sealer is healthy and safe!
• Our Place “Always Pan:” This pan will become your absolute favorite, especially when you hear that it does the job of 10 pieces of cookware. Just think of all the space you will save! Plus, it has a 50% longer lasting ceramic coating, and is made without potentially toxic materials.
• Drawer Organizers: You can find these pretty much anywhere but the higher quality, the better. My favorites are from Crate & Barrel - the “NeatMethod Acacia Wood” and the “Expandable Bamboo” series.
P.S. Don’t forget, if you have a pet at home, make sure you are keeping your finger on the pulse with their food as well!
#3: PRODUCTS
Next to food, the products you use on a daily basis are just as important to make sure you are going through on a consistent basis. This may even be something you want to do monthly in lieu of quarterly. These are items such as all of your face products, toothpaste and mouthwash, body products, nutritional supplements & medications, and cleaning supplies. Just like we discussed with your kitchen items, pull everything out of your drawers and cabinets, wipe them down, assess & test (if applicable), then organize accordingly. Make sure to dispose of certain medications and cleaning supplies in an appropriate way.
I love a good shopping spree at the Container Store, and they have so many great options to keep your products in check! Really, everything I have shared so far can be found in store. Of course, Amazon will also be a go-to!
#4: BEDROOM & OFFICE
Finally, while I know there are many rooms in your home to tackle when it comes to organization, I feel that your bedroom & o ice are two of your biggest sanctuaries. Yes, one may be for sleeping and a place to unwind after a long day, but the other is where you are making the magic happen in your professional career. These would be the two at the top of my list to prioritize.
Here are some tips on how to get started:
Bedroom:
• Make your bed…it makes a world of di erence!
• Clear your floor! Pick up/fold clothing & blankets, pick up & shelve books/magazines, put shoes away, etc.
• Keep dressers and bedside tables as clear and clutter free as possible
• Just like your closet, make sure to go through your dresser drawers
• Use baskets and under the bed storage boxes
O ice:
• Shred old and unused documents
• Organize pens, paper clips, business cards, pads of paper, etc.
• Organize paperwork with file folders and invest in a decorative file cabinet
• Keep work surfaces as clear as possible
• Organize your desk drawer
I hope you find these tips and strategies useful and helpful! And, as a friendly reminder, when you are not finding me organizing, you can find me training clients at Train in McLean. Mention this article to receive a free 1 hour personal training session (o er applicable to new clients only)- janine@2healthnuts.com

Adopting Love: February Fostering or Adopting a New Pet

CRAFTING
SERENE SPACES

ANNIE DINEEN Owner of Fetch & Favor
A MONTH TO CELEBRATE LOVE
February is all about love, and what better way to celebrate than by opening your heart and home to a pet in need? DC-area rescues always have an amazing group of dogs, cats, and sometimes even other animals that need a loving home!
HELPING PETS FIND THEIR FOREVER HOME
Winter can be a challenging time for shelters as they manage higher intake rates and lower adoption numbers. By adopting in February, you're not only gaining a loving companion but also giving a shelter pet a second chance. If you're not fully ready to adopt, try fostering—our local rescues are always looking for new foster families!
VALENTINE'S DAY PET ADOPTION EVENTS
Lots of our favorite local rescues are hosting events this month! Lucky Dog Rescue has events at Petsmart and Petco throughout the month; City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue is always looking for fosters or families ready to adopt, and Homeward Trails is seeking fosters and adopters as well. For a fun Valentine's date, make a reservation at the cat cafe Crumbs & Whiskers in Georgetown—their cats are all adoptable too!
WINTER = MORE TIME INDOORS
The winter months provide the perfect opportunity to bond with a new pet. With more time spent indoors, you'll have ample time to help your new furry friend adjust to their surroundings, establish routines, and create lasting memories. Spending more time inside at home also means you'll be able to pet-proof your space and see which things your new pet is/isn't interacting with.
PREPARING FOR YOUR NEW LOVE
If you're ready to adopt, make sure you're prepared! Don't forget to:
• Pet-proof your home to ensure their safety (especially when adopting a puppy or kitten—these little ones are still learning and will go through phases that require proofing in different ways!).

• Stock up on essentials like food, a bed, toys, and grooming tools.

McLean Youth Soccer Building Skills, Confidence, and Community
By CHARLIE GALLEGOS

For thousands of young athletes in our area, McLean Youth Soccer (MYS) is more than just a sports program—it's a place where passion for soccer and personal growth come together. Under the leadership of Program Director Michael Newhall and Executive Director Louise Waxler, MYS has become a cornerstone of our community, fostering development on and off the field.
Catering to children from ages 2 through college (WPSL/CCL Pro), MYS offers a range of programs, including travel, recreational, and the newly introduced Mclean Development Program, along with camps and skills training. Each program is carefully designed to meet the needs of its participants. The level of commitment increases with competitive tiers: recreational players train once a week with weekend games, while travel players train up to three times weekly and compete in 1-2 matches each weekend.

“There's something for everyone at MYS,” says Michael Newhall. “Whether they're new to soccer or striving for professional aspirations, we ensure that every child is supported and challenged appropriately.”
MYS places a strong emphasis on maintaining a healthy balance between competitive play and enjoyment. “We're working with kids, not professionals,” explains Newhall. “Winning is important, but not at the expense of development and fun. Each player should leave practice having learned something, exercised, and, most importantly, looked forward to coming back.”
MYS isn't just about developing soccer players; it's about shaping wellrounded individuals. Newhall, Waxler, and their team of coaches prioritize teaching life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and resilience, which players carry with them long after their soccer days are over. Positive reinforcement and fostering self-belief are cornerstones of the program's philosophy.
Over the years, MYS has celebrated numerous success stories. Hundreds of players have advanced to collegiate-level soccer, competing at D1, D2, and D3 schools. Others have gone on to win national championships, play professionally, and even represent the U.S. on the international stage. Most recently, an MYS alumna played for the U.S. Women's National Team in the World Cup—a testament to the program's ability to nurture talent at the highest level.

The success of MYS wouldn't be possible without the unwavering support of parents and the local community. Parents play an integral role, from cheering on the sidelines to assisting with logistics. MYS also takes pride in hosting four tournaments annually, drawing teams from across the country to compete in McLean.
The future of MYS is bright, with ambitious plans to grow its programs and enhance the experience for all participants. The program strives to become a hub for top-tier player development while fostering a love for the game. “We aim to develop the whole player, focusing on the entire age group rather than just the top teams,” shares Newhall. “We want kids to push each other on the field and become lifelong friends off it.”

Interested in getting your child started with McLean Youth Soccer? It's as easy as reaching out to their dedicated staff, who are ready to assist parents every step of the way.
At McLean Youth Soccer, it's not just about the game—it's about building confidence, friendships, and a foundation for success both on and off the field.

Emotion Regulation:
THE UNTAPPED POWER OF MENTAL HEALTH

By DEBRA BROSIUS Psy.D., LCP - Co-Owner, Integrated Psychology Associates of McLean, LLC
What if emotions weren’t obstacles to overcome but tools to empower growth? At Integrated Psychology Associates of McLean (IPAM), we believe emotional regulation is one of the most untapped skills in mental health. By teaching clients how to modulate their emotions, we’re helping individuals and families build resilience, confidence, and lifelong emotional intelligence.
“Emotions are not the enemy,” says Dr. Eva Theodosiadis, a leader at IPAM. “They’re powerful tools—if you know how to use them.”
THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY INTERVENTION
Too often, therapy is sought when emotions have already become overwhelming. But what if we could address those challenges earlier? At IPAM, we emphasize early intervention, helping clients develop emotional skills before challenges escalate.
Dr. Theodosiadis explains, “It’s like learning to navigate a car. You don’t wait until you’re in a crash to take driving lessons. Therapy can be a preventative tool, teaching you how to manage emotional ‘tra ic’ long before you hit roadblocks.”
This proactive approach empowers clients to face life’s challenges with confidence, turning potential obstacles into opportunities for growth.
IPAM’S
CORE PHILOSOPHY
At the heart of IPAM’s approach is the belief that emotions are tools—not barriers. “Emotions aren’t an on-o switch,” explains Dr. Theodosiadis. “They’re a dimmer that can be adjusted to match the intensity of the moment. Learning to use this skill transforms the way we navigate challenges and opportunities.”
Using evidence-based practices like Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), we help clients build skills in:
• Emotion Regulation: Learning how to adjust emotional responses to match the situation.
• Distress Tolerance: Developing the ability to handle di icult emotions without becoming overwhelmed.
• Mindfulness and Social Skills: Building stronger connections through emotional awareness and interpersonal e ectiveness.
“Our work is about helping clients see emotions as an integral part of their lives,” says Dr. Debra Brosius. “When you understand and regulate your emotions, you can thrive personally and professionally.”
WHAT SETS IPAM APART
IPAM o ers specialized services that go beyond traditional therapy:
• Team Approach: We work as a team! Regardless of your individual provider, you will benefit from the experience of the team.
• Male Therapists: Addressing the unique needs of teenage boys and men, who often face barriers to seeking emotional support.
• Bilingual Therapy: Providing care in Spanish, Ukrainian, and Greek to ensure inclusivity and comfort for clients from diverse backgrounds.
• Specialized Programs: From ADHD-focused care to postconcussion recovery, our tailored services address a wide range of mental health needs.
“We’re not just a therapy practice—we’re a resource for growth,” explains Dr. Brosius. “Our goal is to create a safe space where everyone can learn and grow, no matter their starting point.”
WHY EARLY INTERVENTION MATTERS
Therapy isn’t just about addressing immediate challenges—it’s about building resilience for the future. Families often seek therapy when emotions have already become overwhelming. But by starting earlier, clients can learn to manage their feelings e ectively and prevent overwhelming situations from arising.

Mastering emotional skills doesn’t just improve personal well-being—it has practical benefits too. For children and adolescents, it can lead to better academic performance, stronger relationships, and increased confidence in handling life’s challenges.
WHY THIS CONVERSATION MATTERS TODAY
Skills like emotion regulation are more important than ever in a world that increasingly values emotional intelligence. Schools and workplaces are starting to recognize the value of these abilities, but many individuals still lack access to the tools they need to navigate the demands of life.
“By teaching emotions as skills, we make mental health accessible and empowering,” says Dr. Theodosiadis. “It’s no longer about fixing what’s ‘broken.’ It’s about building what’s possible.”
CONCLUSION
Mastering emotions isn’t just about avoiding challe

The Madeira School Receives Landmark $60 Million Philanthropic Gift
By KAREN JOOSTEMA
An unprecedented gift from an anonymous alumna reflects the importance of educating young women now and for generations to come.
The Madeira School, a leading girls’ college preparatory and boarding school in McLean, has received a transformative gift of $60 million from an anonymous alumna. This marks the largest single donation in the school's 118-year history and is the largest ever to an independent girls’ school.
The gift builds upon a foundation of generosity that has supported Madeira's mission of “launching women who change the world,” positioning the school to continue its commitment to providing deep, ambitious learning for young women. At the request of the donor, the gift will be invested for at least five years as part of Madeira’s endowment and then integrated into the school's strategic priorities to ensure a thoughtful and impactful approach to supporting Madeira's innovative educational programs.

"Rooted in the tradition of donor support that has shaped Madeira's journey and enabled our most significant achievements, this extraordinary contribution continues the School's remarkable trajectory. It supports future generations of women and will inspire our entire community to continue supporting girls' education."
"This transformational contribution represents a profound commitment to girls' education and Madeira’s mission to prepare young women to become leaders and changemakers,” said Christina Kyong, Head of School. “This gift is a powerful recognition of the impact the school has had on the donor’s life and the lives of countless young women. We are deeply moved by her immense confidence in Madeira's leadership and our vision to educate students for generations to come."
The Madeira School is renowned for its ambitious approach to education. With a focus on hands-on learning, Madeira students graduate with unparalleled real-world experience through the nationally recognized Co-Curriculum internship program. This program provides three transformative internships: a service-focused experience in 10th grade, an opportunity to work on Capitol Hill in 11th grade, and a senior-year internship tailored to each student’s unique interests. Over their four years, Madeira students build distinguished resumes that rival those of college graduates. Complementing this signature program is Madeira's innovative modular schedule, designed to create individualized paths that empower students to thrive academically and personally. Part of Madeira’s proud network of over 6,000 alums, the donor discovered her own unique path at Madeira, and this extraordinary gift stands as a powerful recognition of the impact Madeira had on her life and the lives of countless young women before and after her.
At Madeira, every student’s journey is as distinctive as their ambitions. This historic gift secures a future of excellence for generations to come.

Tequila Holiday Celebration
By DANI BANEGAS

The 1953 Tequila Holiday Celebration took place on December 5 at The House on 1229 in Washington, DC. The party was hosted by 1953 Tequila founders Lindsey Davis Stover and Shivam Mallick Shah to thank their local 1953 Tequila supporters. The House of 1229, of which Mallick Shah is a member, was the perfect venue to hold this event, as both 1953 Tequila and ‘The House’ were created to celebrate women and the power of women coming together to create change. 1953 Tequila is an ultra-premium, additive-free añejo tequila that is founded, farmed, distilled, and led by women. You can find 1953 Tequila for local purchase in Virginia ABC stores and online special orders and in DC at Schneider's and Calvert Woodley and coming soon to be enjoyed in local restaurants.

In a competitive real estate market like McLean, sellers sometimes encounter an agent eager to list their property “off-market,” meaning it will not be placed on the Multiple Listing Service (MLS). While an off-market strategy can appear exclusive, there are significant factors to consider before deciding which approach is best.
PROS OF AN OFF-MARKET LISTING
1. Greater Privacy
Some homeowners prefer not to publicly announce a move. An off-market listing keeps showings discreet and limits foot traffic to only serious, pre-qualified buyers. This can be especially appealing for those who value confidentiality or have high-profile lifestyles.
2. Perceived Exclusivity
Off-market homes are often seen as “exclusive offerings,” generating curiosity and potentially attracting buyers seeking unique opportunities. In certain niche markets, this can add allure and prompt swift private offers.
Should You List Your Home Off the MLS?
THE PROS AND CONS
By BRIAN MASON Real Estate Agent
CONS OF AN OFF-MARKET LISTING
1. Limited Buyer Exposure
Perhaps the biggest drawback is missing out on the MLS's massive audience. The MLS feeds into countless public websites and agent databases, instantly alerting a broad pool of potential buyers. Without that reach, you risk fewer offers and potentially lower sales prices.
2. Conflict of Interest
Agents who represent both the seller and the buyer—known as dual agency—could find themselves torn between competing interests. Each party wants the best possible terms, but a single agent may struggle to advocate for both equally. Ensuring that your agent prioritizes your interests can be more challenging in this scenario.
3. Limited Market Feedback
When a property is not on the MLS, it receives less overall scrutiny. Without public visibility, you lose valuable feedback about the home's pricing, condition, and market appeal. This information can help refine your strategy and maximize the sale price.
4. Potential Brokerage Benefit
Keeping a listing off the MLS can favor the listing brokerage, which might secure the buyer themselves and earn both sides of the commission. Sellers should consider whether this arrangement truly serves their best interests.
5. Finding the Right Fit
Deciding whether to keep your home off-market largely depends on your personal goals. If privacy is paramount and you are willing to accept a possibly smaller buyer pool, an off-market listing might work. However, if maximizing exposure and final sales price is the priority, the MLS remains an unmatched resource.
Before finalizing your decision, discuss with your agent how each approach aligns with your objectives. Ultimately, informed choices lead to the best possible outcome—whether you opt for the hush of an off-market listing or the broad reach of the MLS.

The need for programs like G.R.E.A.T. Math Minds is evident. In Prince William County, only 79.33% of Black girls and 81.73% of Hispanic girls pass the Math SOL test, compared to an overall passing rate of 86%. For girls from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, the rate drops even further to 78.20%. G.R.E.A.T. Math Minds not only addresses these disparities but also provides these young learners with the tools and confidence to excel in mathematics and beyond.
SOCIAL4GOOD’S DECEMBER PROJECT: SUPPORTING FUTURE STEAM LEADERS
Inspiring Underserved Girls to Be Anything They Want to Be Social4Good Charity Spotlight: PINK SPACE THEORY
By SHEILA MURPHY
In the heart of Prince William County, a small but mighty initiative is inspiring young, underserved girls to embrace their mathematical potential and break barriers in STEM fields. Pink Space Theory, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) education, is making waves with its G.R.E.A.T. Math Minds program. Recently, Social4Good (S4G) partnered with Pink Space Theory to support this growing and impactful program that is, most importantly, building confidence in young girls with a flair for math.
G.R.E.A.T. MATH MINDS: FOSTERING CONFIDENCE & CURIOSITY
Pink Space Theory’s G.R.E.A.T. Math Minds program stands for Girls who are Responsible for their thoughts, Excited about learning new things, and not afraid to Ask questions and Take risks. This six-month cohort program is specifically designed for girls in Grades 3-5 who exhibit a talent for mathematics. All of the girls participating in the program attend Title I schools. Most identify as minorities, and some are English language learners. The initiative provides a safe and supportive environment where participants can expand their knowledge, build confidence, and engage in hands-on learning activities beyond the traditional classroom setting.

Recognizing the importance of Pink Space Theory’s mission, S4G dedicated its December project to supporting the G.R.E.A.T. Math Minds program. S4G set a goal of creating 40 STEAM kits for program participants at Neabsco, Loch Lomond, Dale City, and Featherstone Elementary Schools. By the end of the project, S4G raised an impressive $3,287.24 in in-kind and financial support. Funds were used to purchase high-quality books, such as Calculating Chimpanzees, Brainy Bees, and Other Animals with Mind-Blowing Mathematical Abilities and The Lemonade War for students focusing on multiplication and division, as well as Earth is Big: A Book of Comparisons and Sir Cumference Speaks Volumes for students focusing on measurement. The kits also included engaging activities, a STEAM-themed graphic tee, and a canvas bag imprinted with inspirational messages. The kits allowed students to explore math concepts with their families over winter break, reinforcing the idea that learning can be both enjoyable and collaborative.
On December 9, S4G members and Pink Space Theory leaders gathered for a “Social & Learn” event where attendees assembled the STEAM kits and created bracelets with inspirational messages for the girls. Monica Nichols, founder of Pink Space Theory, and members of the nonprofit board shared inspiring stories about their work and the program’s impact. “Research shows that early exposure to hands-on STEM activities through programs like ours help students, especially those from underrepresented groups, develop a positive identity in math and science. Our program o ers real-world problem-solving opportunities and exposure to math-related careers. At the end of the day, our G.R.E.A.T. Math Minds Program is about building confidence and fostering a sense of empowerment and excitement in girls who excel in math and science so that they can envision themselves being anything they want to be," stated Nichols in her inspirational address to members.
Since its inception in 2020, G.R.E.A.T. Math Minds has grown exponentially, starting with nine participants at one school and now serving almost 40 girls across four Title I elementary schools. The program is making an impact: participants experience a 342% increase in pre- and post-unit test scores, and 100% of them pass the Math Standards of Learning (SOL) test, often advancing from proficiency to excellence. Pink Space Theory has also developed several corporate partnerships, exposing the girls to female leaders and role models who are advancing in STEAM careers.
Pink Space Theory’s goal is to expand the G.R.E.A.T. Math Minds program to all 34 Title I schools in Prince William County. With continued support from corporate partners and organizations like S4G, this vision is well within reach. For those looking to get involved, Pink Space Theory welcomes volunteers, and partnerships to help expand their programs and reach more students. Visit www.pinkspacetheory. org to learn more about their mission and initiatives.
About Social4Good: S4G is an all-volunteer, grassroots organization that brings together engaged women who want to meet new people and support the organizations that make our community strong. Creating a More Comfortable Home with Insulation and Dehumidification
A comfortable home starts with the right balance of temperature and humidity. Insulation combined with dehumidification can help in achieving this. Proper insulation helps regulate indoor temperature, keeping your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. By preventing heat loss or gain, it also reduces energy costs, making your home more e icient. Common areas to insulate include attics, walls, and crawl spaces.
Dehumidification complements insulation by controlling moisture levels. High humidity can make your home feel muggy and promote mold growth, which a ects air quality. A basement or crawl space dehumidifier ensures optimal humidity levels, creating a healthier and more comfortable environment in the rooms above.

By combining e ective insulation with dehumidification, you can prevent drafts, reduce allergens, and maintain a steady indoor climate. These upgrades not only improve comfort but also protect your home from long-term structural damage caused by excess moisture.
Comfenergy focuses on solving problems that homeowners have, often as a result of ine icient insulation, lack of air sealing, and excessive moisture in basements and crawl spaces. Locally owned and operated for over a decade, Comfenergy has helped thousands of Northern Virginia homeowners make their homes more comfortable, energy-e icient, and healthy to live in.
