This issue is a special one for me. For the first time, I am on the cover of McLean Living. Not because I love the spotlight. I don’t. But because after four years, it felt important to pause and share why I do what I do.

I started this magazine without a plan to be seen. I started it to see others. To listen. To connect. To build something that made people feel proud of where they live and who they are becoming. Four years later, this cover is not about celebration. It is about reflection. About sharing the lessons, the mistakes, the growth, and the purpose behind the work.

This may sound simple, or even made up, but the truth is this: the only things that truly make me happy are my family and helping make someone else’s life better. I finally found my purpose. Somewhere along the way, I realized that to help in a meaningful, lasting way, I needed resources. I needed stability. I needed connections. And yes, I needed money. So I built businesses with intention. Not just for success, but for impact. I won’t pretend I don’t enjoy beautiful things. I do.

But everything I build has a deeper reason behind it.

I was born in Kansas City, raised in Honduras, and moved to McLean in 2021 with faith, fear, and a belief that community could change everything. And it did. This town welcomed me, supported me, and gave me the space to grow.

This issue also marks the opening of Helvetia, a long-held dream finally brought to life at 1305 Vincent Place, McLean. What I call “diamond therapy” is not about jewelry alone. It is about milestones, confidence, healing, and honoring the journey it takes to turn an idea into something real. I invite you to read more about what went into it, because it carries the same heart that built this magazine.

As we step into a new year, my hope is simple. Let’s keep choosing purpose.

Let’s set goals worth fighting for, but also remember to be kind along the way.

Let’s support one another, champion small businesses, celebrate our friends, and continue building a community we are proud to call home.

McLean, With Love McLean didn’t just welcome her; it shaped how she leads, gives back, and shows up.

Long before diamonds entered the picture, Gloria Fonseca was building something far more enduring: community.

When she speaks about McLean, there is no performance in her pride, only gratitude. What shaped the way she leads today, she says, was being welcomed. Being supported. Being given the grace to grow.

“This community didn’t just watch me build,” Gloria reflects. “They stood next to me while I did it.”

That sense of belonging did not arrive overnight. In October 2021, guided by conviction and a deep belief in people, Gloria made a decision that would quietly redefine her path. She launched McLean Living magazine not from a boardroom, but from the sidewalks of downtown McLean and Tysons. She walked block by block, knocking on doors, introducing herself, listening, and learning the stories behind the storefronts.

Some doors didn’t open. Many did. Over time, those early conversations became relationships. Relationships became trust. And trust became friendship.

“Cold knocking turned into connection,” she says. “And connection became everything.”

McLean Living was never intended to be transactional.

From the beginning, it was a love letter to a town she had fallen deeply in love with: its families, its women, and its quiet generosity. She wanted to create something people could hold in their hands and say, This is us.

As the magazine grew, there was one thing she worked tirelessly to protect: its heart.

“It was never meant to feel like a business transaction,” Gloria explains. “It was always about belonging, celebrating, and giving back.”

Through the years, that commitment showed up in ways both visible and deeply personal. Sponsoring local events.

Supporting schools. Creating space for stories that might otherwise go untold. Even placing a small bench in McLean Central Park, a symbol of permanence and gratitude. The magazine became woven into the fabric of the community, not simply as a publication, but as a presence.

By 2024, that same philosophy expanded with the launch of Great Falls Living, extending the mission beyond McLean while preserving its soul. Different town, same intention: to honor people, celebrate stories, and build something rooted in authenticity.

As Gloria’s relationships within the community deepened, so did the conversations. People were no longer only talking about businesses or features. They were opening up about life transitions, celebrations, heartbreaks, reinventions.

“That’s when everything shifted,” Gloria says. “I realized people didn’t just want to be seen. They wanted to be understood. They wanted their moments honored in a way that felt permanent.”

That realization would eventually lead her somewhere unexpected.

The idea for Helvetia did not begin with a business plan. It began decades earlier, in childhood conversations between best friends.

Gloria’s closest friend since childhood, Alicia, grew up in a family of jewelers. As girls, they would imagine their future the way children do, with certainty and laughter. One day we’ll have a jewelry store, they would say. They had only one detail figured out.

“The door knob is going to be a diamond,” Gloria laughs.

“That was the plan.”

As adults, their paths naturally complemented one another. Gloria brought years of business-building experience, storytelling, and community leadership.

Alicia brought generational jewelry knowledge, craftsmanship, and deep industry expertise. What once sounded like a childhood joke slowly revealed itself as something real.

Helvetia was formed at the intersection of those two worlds.

It began with curiosity, particularly around lab-grown diamonds and the evolving possibilities of modern fine jewelry.

What started as exploration quickly expanded into something much larger.

With traditional expertise and innovation combined, Helvetia became a place where anything could be created.

“Now we can curate everything,” Gloria says. “Beyond what people ever imagined was possible.”

When someone walks into Helvetia, Gloria Fonseca hopes they feel understood before a single word is spoken. Not sold to.

“Helvetia is an experience,” she says. “Not a store. Not a quick transaction.”

The Northern Virginia Alliance League (NVAL) hosted its 2025 Holiday Luncheon on Tuesday, December 9, at the elegant Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, bringing together community members for an afternoon of generosity, celebration, and purpose. Benefiting Meals on Wheels Arlington, the event welcomed guests with a holiday gift basket raffle and silent auction, followed by a seated luncheon. The festive atmosphere was further elevated by a fashion show presented by Monkee’s of Fairfax, adding a stylish touch to an already memorable gathering.

Proceeds from the luncheon directly supported Meals on Wheels Arlington, whose mission is to nourish and empower homebound individuals through compassionate meal delivery. Through events like this, NVAL continues its longstanding commitment to strengthening the local community by providing financial support to vital nonprofit organizations. The 2025 Holiday Luncheon served as a meaningful reminder of the impact that collective generosity can have—especially during the holiday season—while celebrating the power of community coming together for a shared cause.

Some stories begin quietly, with a moment so ordinary it almost slips by unnoticed. For 16-year-old Owen Singer, the spark behind CancerKicks began with a pair of pink tennis shoes and a cozy blanket.

They were simple things—soft, bright, and comforting— but for Owen’s mom, who was facing yet another round of breast cancer treatment, they became something much more: armor, encouragement, and a steady reminder that she wasn’t walking into that infusion room alone.

Owen saw that. He felt it. And while most teenagers wouldn’t know how to respond to something as overwhelming as a parent’s cancer battle, Owen did what few his age even imagine: he turned love into action.

That question became a mission.

The mission became CancerKicks.

Today, every item he designs and sells—hoodies, tees, blankets— funnels 100% of its profits to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, supporting research that could one day end the disease his family has faced up close.

Along the way, Owen has created deeply meaningful moments, including designing custom shirts for Team Salura, named for his mom. The double-heart logo was inspired by the temporary tattoos his family wore the day she began chemo, a symbol she later had permanently tattooed on her wrist.

Running a growing charity hasn’t been easy, but Owen says the biggest lessons have been perseverance and gratitude. Through planning meetings, production challenges, and balancing school, one thing has remained constant: the unwavering support of his family, especially his mom, whose strength he calls his greatest inspiration.

As the new year begins, Owen hopes his story encourages other teens to believe in their ability to make an impact.

“You don’t need a degree or a big team,” he says. “You just need a mission and the perseverance to start.”

Looking ahead, CancerKicks is expanding corporate partnerships and building its social media presence to reach more families and supporters. And when Owen isn’t working on the charity, you’ll likely find him on a family vacation or back on the basketball court, coaching, reffing, or returning to play once his knee fully heals.

Three words capture everything he aims to do: Comfort.

Care. Cure.

And with the heart he brings to this mission, Owen is already making all three a reality.

It’s modern and polished without trying too hard, and the food easily sits in fine-dining territory with its clean flavors, high-end ingredients, and a chef who clearly enjoys surprising his guests.

A big part of that excellence comes from Executive Chef Chico Dator, whose background includes time at Nobu and several other acclaimed Japanese restaurants. His touch is clear in every dish: precise cuts, thoughtful flavors, and a balance of elegance and ease that keeps the experience enjoyable rather than formal.

We started with cocktails, and Modan doesn’t play around. THE KING OF KAIJU is the sexiest drink I’ve had in a while. Smoky mezcal with a salttahini rim and Japanese seven-spice sesame seeds is the kind of drink you immediately want to reorder (and I did!). We also tried karaoke at night and an elevated espresso martini, smooth and not too sweet, while the lychee martini is bright and floral.

Once the chef began sending out his favorites, the tasting-style flow felt effortless.

Wagyu dumplings with truffle aioli and sweet onion–black truffle salsa, perfectly Crispy tuna, lobster, and salmon tacos on nori chips, and scallop tiradito with aji amarillo, a fun Japanese-Peruvian twist. King salmon carpaccio with truffle aioli and crispy onion Everything was incredibly fresh and beautifully presented.

ROLLS WITH A LUXE TOUCH The rolls are where Modan adds a little glam. Fresh fish is the foundation, but touches like caviar, tobiko, and masago give them that luxurious edge without overdoing it.

• The Modan Rainbow shows off the quality of the fish.

• The Dragon Roll pairs snow crab and unagi with pops of tobiko.

• And the Sexy Roll—akami tuna, salmon, caviar, and masago rice—is rich, indulgent, and one of the standout rolls of the night.

THE SAVORY FINALE We ended the savory portion with grilled lamb chops, followed by a perfectly silky miso marinated Black Cod topped with ikura. The cod was one of the top dishes of the evening.

A DESSERT SPREAD, WITH ONE CLEAR FAVORITE For dessert, Modan brought out an elaborate dessert table, complete with multiple pastries and sweets prepared by their in-house pastry chef, who creates new desserts every week. Everything looked beautiful and tasted just as good, but the Matcha Cheesecake was the standout for me. Smooth, earthy, and not overly sweet. It was the perfect finish to a seafood-forward meal, and the dessert I’d happily return for.

THE BOTTOM LINE Modan delivers a refined, modern Japanese experience right in McLean with luxurious touches, extremely fresh seafood, inventive cocktails, and a chef with Nobulevel expertise guiding the kitchen. It’s the kind of place that turns a regular evening into a memorable dining experience.

January is a natural time to reevaluate habits, reconnect with your body, and set intentions for a healthier year ahead. It also marks Cervical Health Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to focus on preventive care and screenings that support long-term wellness.

For women, health priorities shift by decade. In your 20s and 30s, routine Pap tests and HPV screenings are essential, even if you feel completely well. These tests catch early cellular changes long before symptoms appear and remain one of the most effective tools for preventing cervical cancer. Women in their 40s and 50s benefit from continued screening, as well as conversations with their providers about perimenopause, bone health, and evolving metabolic needs.
