TO MY DEAREST McLEAN RESIDENTS,

Hello, Holiday Season! I can already feel the comforting aroma of apple and cinnamon in the air.

The other day, I came across this delightful quote: “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.” – Will Ferrell. It made me reflect on the strength and warmth of our community. McLean is filled with so much heart, and I have no doubt that together, we can sing—metaphorically or not— loud enough to fill our town with love and cheer this holiday season.

Now, let me confess something: I’m not much of a cook! But I know many of you are absolute culinary stars. That’s why, in this issue, we’ve invited young baking prodigy Finley to share a special holiday recipe that’s sure to bring sweetness to your celebrations.

As we gather with loved ones, let’s also take a moment to support our wonderful local businesses. Fairfax County is brimming with unique shops and treasures—whether you’re searching for the perfect bottle of wine, handcrafted candles, or cozy winter accessories, there’s something special waiting for everyone right here in our community. By shopping local, we’re not just finding great gifts; we’re keeping our community vibrant and strong.

This season, let’s celebrate what makes McLean truly special—its people. Wishing you all a holiday filled with warmth, joy, and plenty of new memories to cherish.

Warmly,

Crafting Change: LINDSEY DAVIS STOVER AND 1953 TEQUILA

This time of year is filled with twinkling lights, tensiled trees, mistletoe, stockings, and most importantly, family. We at McLean Living enjoyed getting to know one of McLean’s own veterans policy experts and Tequila owner, Lindsey Davis Stover, and her family.

Lindsey Davis Stover is a partner at Edwards, Davis Stover & Associates and Founder of 1953 Tequila. Lindsey is a graduate of Baylor University and Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government, where she laid the foundation for a career in policy and government. Lindsey went on to serve as Chief of Sta to Congressman Chet Edwards and Senior Advisor, Senior Executive in

Service (SES) during the Obama Administration in the U.S. Department of Veterans A airs. After leaving the administration, along with former Congressman Chet Edwards, who raised his family here in McLean, Lindsey formed Edwards, Davis Stover & Associates to continue their work serving those who served in our US Armed Forces.

In 2016, Lindsey Davis Stover ran for Congress in Virginia’s 10th Congressional District. In that race, she met Alison Kiehl Friendman, and while they found themselves as political rivals for months, a dear and trusted friendship emerged. After the race was over, Lindsey and Alison met every two weeks at McLean Family Restaurant for breakfast.

© Best Version Media

One morning Lindsey walked in late to breakfast after being up all night. Before the two even greeted each other, Lindsey said to Alison, “I need you to tell me I am crazy!" Alison’s response was, “I am not sure I am a good judge of crazy, but let's hear it.” The two quickly sat down in a booth by the window, and Lindsey proceeded to tell Alison what had kept her up all night. It all started with a Texas Monthly article on tequila highlighting the top brands and the men behind them. Lindsey, originally from Texas, has always had a love for premium, pure tequila. The Texas Monthly article hit her from a di erent angle and started her research on the male-dominated culture of tequila and the spirits industry. Lindsey proceeded to tell Alison about her idea of creating a tequila company that women led at every level—from the agave fields to the distillery to the boardroom—a tequila company that raised the standard of excellence, quality, and sophistication while also elevating the stories of women in the process. Alison responded with, “That is my kind of crazy!". Over a breakfast at McLean Family Restaurant, a crazy idea started to turn into a business plan. Alison introduced Lindsey to Shivam Mallick Shah, and the three came together around their shared values and the belief that they could build a great company led by women and do good in the world while also making exceptional tequila. This was the birth of 1953 Tequila. A tequila brand founded, farmed, distilled, and led by women.

During the naming process, they searched for something that would hold the significance of the year 1920 in the U.S., the year women gained the right to vote. In Mexico, 1953 was an equally pivotal moment in Mexican history, again the year women achieved the right to vote (and run for o ice!). 1953 encapsulates the ethos of what they set out to build as a company in a male-dominated industry. 1953 Tequila honors

the courage, tenacity, and boldness of women fighting for equality then and those who continue to pursue equality for women around the world today.

1953 Tequila takes immense pride in the fact that women at every level founded, farmed, distilled, and led our tequila. Notably, they partner with a unionized female-run distillery in Mexico led by Adriana Lopez that upholds equitable practices, providing fair wages and comprehensive healthcare access, and we collaborate with local partners to identify organizations catalyzing change within their communities.

While it is only just the beginning for 1953 Tequila, its impact has already been astounding. 1953 Tequila was named the “Best Additive-Free Anejo Tequila” on the market by Men’s Journal and was recently featured on The Today Show. The Robb Report just named 1953 Tequila as “Best Craft Anejo." The product can now be found at McLean ABC and local restaurants in the McLean and Tysons areas. The best part of 1953 Tequila for Lindsey is, “I love being able to show my two daughters they can do anything, even if they have never seen a woman do it before. I hope one day they don’t face the same gender barriers, but if they do, I am confident that they will know how to overcome them.”

Lindsey and her husband, Jeremey, are originally from small towns in Texas. They were high school sweethearts and found their way back to each other after college. While they never thought of leaving Texas, life’s adventures and careers brought them to the Washington, DC, area over 17 years ago. Jeremey has a background in construction and development, and he continues to develop properties in the Houston and Galveston areas. They have two daughters, Emery, who is a freshman at Sidwell Friends in Washington, DC, and Audrey, who is a 7th grader at Cooper Middle School in McLean. The family spends most of their weekends on the soccer field. Both Emery and Audrey play for the ECNL teams at Arlington Soccer and also enjoy McLean Youth Basketball during the o season. “We love that our girls are active and competitive in sports. The lessons they learn on and o the field are valuable life lessons and will serve them well,’ says Jeremey. Sports are a big part of their lives, and the competitiveness extends itself into family game nights. The Stover family loves evenings at home playing board games, dominoes, cards, and very competitive games of H.O.R.S.E on their basketball hoop.

This holiday season, there is much to be thankful for, and Lindsey and her family plan to take time to celebrate with family and friends. “The holidays are a time to reflect, give thanks, and rejoice. It is a special time for family and enjoying each other and the traditions of the holidays," says Lindsey. A special tradition for the Stover family is attending church at Trinity United Methodist Church in McLean on Christmas Eve,

followed by a Christmas Eve party at a dear friend’s house. Every year the Stover’s hide a ceramic pickle on their tree, and whoever finds the pickle on Christmas Eve gets to open a special gift, following a family tradition extending back for generations. As we gather with family and friends during this special time of year, we wish you Happy Holidays and Cheers from our family to yours!

Next ChaptHER was founded by four friends - Lindsay Gill, Anina Belle Giannini, Alicia McKenzie, and Hilary Phelps- in the Washington, D.C. area with a shared vision to turn the traditional concept of “ladies who lunch” on its head. Our story began over ten years ago when we became close friends, supporting each other through the various highs and lows of life. From marriage to divorce, from starting families to navigating loss, we each experienced transformative changes, and we always found strength in coming together over lunch. Each time we left those

lunches, we felt empowered, inspired, and more connected. As we moved through di erent stages in our lives, we realized that our experiences—both the challenges and the triumphs—had equipped us with a wealth of knowledge and insight. We began to see how meaningful it was to share our journeys, o er advice, and encourage one another. With our diverse backgrounds, including expertise in health and wellness, finance, entrepreneurship, hospitality, and nonprofit growth, we felt we could o er more than just lunch; we could create a platform for women to explore the next chapter of their lives. Thus, Next ChaptHER was born. Our mission is not to dictate what

women should do in the next phase of their lives, but rather to provide the tools, advice, and di erent perspectives to help them navigate their own paths. This could be entrepreneurship, fitness, wellness, career shifts, or any personal growth journey. We want to help women feel empowered to pursue their goals, whatever they may be, with the support of a community that encourages collaboration and learning.

Why You Should Be Eating Meat On The Bone

of additional certifications to my name, including the American Council on Exercise’s Health Coach and Precision Nutrition. The knowledge I share, as well as my thoughts and opinions, are from the research I have done over the last 18 years in the industry, as well as through my own education and experiences.

I highly recommend you read Catherine Shanahan’s book “Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food.” You will see I cite her book throughout; it is an excellent read that showcases the true meaning of optimal health…and HUGE inspiration for this article!

Now back to the matter at hand - Why You Should Be Eating Meat On The Bone?!

It, truly, is the most wonderful time of the year, yet it can often feel quite the opposite, especially when it comes to your nutrition. Just like retailers find December to be game changers for their business, this is the time when I hear the most concerns, frustrations, and “I guess I will just start anew come January 1st” from family, friends, and clients. In previous articles, I have shared my health coaching, lifestyle approach, and philosophy on nutrition - be your own food “detective,” reframe your mindset from one of scarcity and FOMO to mindfulness and abundance, remember all food is available to you 365 days per year, etc..

While I could continue to dive into my favorite coaching strategies, I wanted this article to focus more on the building blocks of the human, HEALTHY, diet. And, for the record, the human diet is very di erent from the American diet. I wanted to share the strategies I have researched, implemented, and found to be nutritional game changers for myself and others. These are strategies you can employ right now, and carry with you into the New Year (and, well, FOREVER)! Catherine Shanahan has coined these strategies as “The Four Pillars of the Human Diet,” and these are the very four I am going to share with you today. Let’s just say you may not look at a roasted turkey, roasted chicken, or even pot roast the same way again!

Most of the American diet is void of the very ingredients and nutrients that, actually, make them healthy. Cookbooks claiming their pages are filled with recipes of a region’s traditional cuisine are (usually) incorrect. How many modern-day diet cookbooks are emphasizing lard as an ingredient? What about the focus of bone-in and skin-on vs. boneless and skinless? Here’s a good one - fat free and low-fat vs. full-fat? In an e ort to create easy meals in minutes, recipes are revised so hard-to-find ingredients are swapped with items you can easily find on grocery store shelves, and time-consuming cooking methods are drastically altered so you are not spending hours in the kitchen (Shanahan, Catherine. Deep Nutrition. New York. Flatiron Books. May 2018.).

Shanahan strives for you to start reframing your mindset, and I would like you to follow suit as well.

• Think less like a chemist and more like a chef.

• Focus on getting back to our roots, literally! Emphasize ingredients that are as close to the earth as possible, don’t be shy of animal products, and fall in love (or back in love) with cooking traditions that have stood the test of time

• Look at food di erently; think of food as part of our culture & culinary origin.

Strategy #1: Consume Meat on the Bone

Have you ever done a taste test of boneless, skinless meat vs. meat on the bone that has been slow-cooked for hours? In my mind, there is no comparison at all! The taste alone will always have me reaching for bone-in any day. Did you know “the more everything stays together—fat, bone, marrow, skin, and other connective tissue—the better” (Shanahan, Catherine. Deep Nutrition. New York. Flatiron Books. May 2018.)? Of course, the better quality of ingredients you start with—i.e., think organic pasture raised—the better the end result too.

• Preserve the consistency and texture of your meat - try your best not to overcook. Long story short, when we overcook our meat, not only does the flavor profile cease to exist, but it lacks all the beneficial nutrients. Besides it tasting yummy, isn’t this the very reason we are consuming?

• Rekindle your love of the slow cooker. Don’t worry, if you do not have a slow cooker, it is perfectly fine; you can achieve the slow cooking method by means of the oven too. Slow cooking is a perfect way to take a meal from really good to outstanding. Just as I mentioned earlier about thinking like a chef, most chefs will tell you that it takes time for flavors to really release and emerge. This is why slow cooking is so valuable—it gives your meat plenty of time to reach its full potential. “Making sure you are slow roasting with additional parts such as skin and ligaments, you are creating additional nutrition, which includes the added benefits of glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, and hyaluronic acid” (Shanahan, Catherine. Deep Nutrition. New York. Flatiron Books. May 2018.) ? This seems like a much better option than all the supplements for hair, skin, nails, and joints, right?

• Don’t be scared to use the fat! Yes, we need it—plain and simple. It is not only a fantastic source of energy, but it makes up 30–80% of our cell membranes. And unlike the other energy source - SUGAR- it does not try to become friends with insulin, which promotes weight gain (Shanahan, Catherine. Deep Nutrition. New York. Flatiron Books. May 2018.). In order for

© Best Version Media

certain vitamins to be absorbed—A, D, E, and K—we need to consume fat!

• Bone broth is not just a fad; I feel it is part of the nutritional hierarchy. You are getting the delicious nutrients, marrow, fat, and vitamins that have slowly simmered o the bones. You may already know, but it does wonders for your joint health and building strong bones (Shanahan, Catherine. Deep Nutrition. New York. Flatiron Books. May 2018.). If you have any leftovers from a full turkey or chicken this holiday season, do not discard. Beyond the meat, this is the nutrient showstopper and it’s ready for you to make an amazing broth out of it.

Strategy #2: Eat the Organ Meat

Also known as o al meats - and, I know what you may be thinking, but it is not awful - these may be one of the BEST foods you can ever eat. Your grandmother and even great-grandmother were absolutely right—you need to eat your liver. While there are lots of various organ meats—and, yes, interesting organ meats to say the least—I am just going to focus on liver. Yes, LIVER.

Incredibly rich in iron and one of the main nutrients it is touted for, liver is a fantastic source of B vitamins, folate, protein, and vitamin A. If you are interested in trying, check out The Organic Butcher in McLean, or you can order from the online brand US Wellness Meats. Both of these establishments are my favorites, and both are my go-to’s. If you are not 100% sold—trust me, I have not done the traditional liver—start with either a liver pate or sliced beef liverwurst. I pan fry in ghee and consume with my eggs. It’s the new sausage.

Strategy #3: Fermentation + Sprouting = Some of Today’s Best Foods

To keep things simple, fermentation is the awakening of a food, although it may seem completely opposite when you find out it is a process of “controlled rotting.” Sprouting, on the other hand, is the germination of a seed (Shanahan, Catherine. Deep Nutrition. New York. Flatiron Books. May 2018.). Both of these methods are influential on one another; they essentially stop the activation of toxins that make certain plants unsafe for us to eat.

First, let’s talk about fermentation. What’s fascinating is that bacteria can transform compounds that are dangerous, bland, and not digestible and turn them into some of the most nourishing foods you can eat. When we consume foods that contain live cultures—i.e., homemade pickles, homemade sauerkraut, plain yogurt, "etc.—our digestive juices attack and destroy many of the little critters. While many survive and protect us, those that are digested give us all of their nutritious parts” (Shanahan, Catherine. Deep Nutrition. New York. Flatiron Books. May 2018.). Additionally, fermented foods are rich in friendly probiotics, protecting our intestinal tract and working with our immune system to not only keep us healthy but prevent certain diseases and possible allergic disorders (Shanahan, Catherine. Deep Nutrition. New York. Flatiron Books. May 2018.).

Next - sprouting. If you have never tried sprouted bread—Ezekiel Bread is my favorite—I highly recommend you try (FYI: these are found in the freezer section). The germination of a seed makes it much more nutrient dense since they are designed to not let go of their stored minerals, fats, and proteins over a certain period of time. You can enjoy the tastiness of bread without being worried about consuming the empty calories associated with the rise in obesity and diabetes (Shanahan, Catherine. Deep Nutrition. New York. Flatiron Books. May 2018.).

Strategy #4: Fresh Is Best

I am sure you have seen countless commercials and advertisements showing how you can take a daily capsule or powdered supplement, and it will be as though you consumed the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables. In a society where we want everything to be a simple & “easy button,” I cannot stress this enough—fresh will always be the best! Whole, fresh foods contain a wealth of antioxidants. These powerhouses “protect our tissues against oxygen damage by acting like selfless chemical heroes, throwing themselves in the line of fire to protect other chemicals from free radical and oxygen damage” (Shanahan, Catherine. Deep Nutrition. New York. Flatiron Books. May 2018.). While eating cooked greens is still adding a much needed benefit, consuming as much of you can raw and FRESH, is going to pack in the most nutrients and the most antioxidants. My favorite way to strive for 9 every day—get creative with salads and side dishes!

I hope these strategies have opened up the nutritional lens a bit and will have you viewing the foods you eat & their cooking methods di erently too. And, if you are reading this and have an upcoming trip to France, you are in for a treat! The French have always been known for their culinary expertise, and most of all, their cuisine very much embraces the four strategies I have shared with you today.

In 2020, as the world faced the height of the COVID pandemic, Lindsay Gill, a mom of three, launched The Napkin Network with a powerful vision: to provide essential items and a support system for mothers in need. Based in the DMV area, this organization emerged from Lindsay's firsthand experiences with motherhood's challenges, heightened by the isolation and resource scarcity brought on by the pandemic.

The Napkin Network began with a clear mission: to ease the burdens mothers face by ensuring they have access to essential resources. Lindsay's inspiration came after a successful diaper drive revealed a substantial gap in community support for mothers struggling to afford basic items. She knew the organization needed to be more than a resource provider—it needed to foster a network where mothers could connect, support each other, and share resources.

Within just five years, The Napkin Network has redistributed over 500,000 baby items to local families. Its impact reaches beyond providing supplies; it builds a supportive community, empowering mothers to uplift one another. From its origins as a grassroots effort, the organization has grown to embody the strength and resilience of motherhood.

Like many small organizations, The Napkin Network faces ongoing challenges. Securing consistent funding and maintaining resources are major obstacles, especially in competition with larger nonprofits. The organization recently lost

access to a free pantry space, a valuable resource for local moms, but Lindsay is actively searching for a new location to continue serving the community. Despite these setbacks, the organization's commitment remains steadfast, and Lindsay is determined to overcome these obstacles with the help of local partners and supporters.

The Heart Behind The Napkin Network

Lindsay Gill, the founder and sole official member, drives The Napkin Network. Lindsay has a background in nonprofit work and fundraising, and she balances her role as a dedicated mom with her passion for helping other mothers. Her experience has been crucial in shaping the organization's success and its continued

growth. In addition to The Napkin Network, Lindsay is also a founding member of Next ChaptHER, a lunch series supporting women in the next phases of their lives.

Despite officially running the organization solo, Lindsay relies on a network of dedicated volunteers and partnerships with local businesses, which serve as the backbone of The Napkin Network. Thanks to their support, the organization has managed to grow and thrive, embodying a spirit of collaboration that allows it to make a tangible difference in the lives of mothers and babies throughout the region.

Looking ahead to 2025, Lindsay aims to expand the organization's reach, engage more donors, and continue to meet the needs of mothers and babies in the community.

© Best Version Media

The Napkin Network has not only provided essential items but has also fostered a supportive community for mothers navigating the challenges of parenthood. With a growing base of support, Lindsay and her team of volunteers are hopeful about the future and committed to continuing their mission to ensure no mother faces these challenges alone.

How to Support The Napkin Network

For those looking to support The Napkin Network, there are multiple ways to get involved:

Financial contributions, whether large or small, help keep the organization funded and allow it to continue its work. Even a $100 support can make a meaningful difference, covering essential items like diapers and formula for families in need.

Item Contributions: Diapers, especially sizes 5 and 6, pull-ups, seasonal items like cough medicine, and formula are always in high demand. Donations of these items go directly to families in need.

Volunteer: Reach out to Lindsay@ TheNapkinNetwork.com to discuss ways you can get involved, whether individually or with your company. Volunteers help manage donation drives, organize events, and support the organization's expansion.

Including Your Pets in Holiday Festivities

The holidays are all about spending time with your loved ones – pets included! Even if you're traveling this holiday season and can't be home with your pet fam, here are some of our favorite pet-centric ways to get in the holiday spirit.

CREATE A FESTIVE STOCKING

Craft or buy a stocking for your pet, filling it with treats, toys, or a cozy blanket. When it's time to open gifts, let your pet sniff out their surprises for an extra festive moment (plus extra enrichment for your pup!)

SHARE SAFE HOLIDAY TREATS

The holidays are a great time to indulge – both for you and your pet! Make or buy pet-friendly treats (like pumpkin biscuits or chew toys) so they can enjoy something special, too. You can even make your own dog-safe cookies with holiday cookie cutters!

HAVE A HOLIDAY PHOTO SHOOT

Your pet doesn't need an Instagram of their own for them to be worthy of center stage! Matching outfits for the whole family (pets included) are tons of fun, and make for a great holiday card. Some pet stores even offer pet photos with Santa!

PET ARTS AND CRAFTS

Use pet-safe materials to make a print or impression of your pet's paw for a tree ornament, or have your kids help with decorating a fun frame to put your favorite photo of your pet in!

PLAN A SEASONAL BUCKET LIST

Drive through a light show, stroll to get hot cocoa and a pup cup, or have them help you pick out a tree! What's your favorite way to incorporate your pets in your holiday celebrations?

America’s Rising Millionaire Class: Electricians, HVAC Companies, and Home Service Entrepreneurs

In recent years, the landscape of wealth creation in America has shifted. Historically, new millionaires were primarily found in real estate, finance, healthcare, or tech. Today, a new class of entrepreneurs is emerging from an “ugly” labor-intensive sector: home services. Electricians, HVAC businesses, plumbing companies, and other essential service providers have seen unprecedented growth and demand, creating a path to prosperity and drawing substantial interest from the private equity (PE) sector. As this trend unfolds, it’s reshaping the home services industry and turning skilled tradespeople into America’s newest millionaires. The surge in demand for home services has been driven by several factors:

1. Aging Infrastructure: As homes and commercial buildings age, maintenance, repairs, and upgrades have become crucial.

2. Housing Boom and Renovation Trend: The post-pandemic housing market has seen a surge in renovations and new constructions.

3. Skilled Labor Shortage: While demand for skilled trades continues to grow, there is a notable shortage of qualified professionals entering these fields. This scarcity has boosted wages, increased job security, and elevated the earnings potential for those who have built thriving businesses in these essential industries.

In conclusion, America’s new class of millionaires won’t necessarily be found on Wall Street or Silicon Valley! Instead, we’ll continue to see variations in industries that put Inc. electricians, HVAC technicians, and skilled tradespeople at the forefront!

HELPING JOB SEEKERS WITH DISADVANTAGES Build Confidence, Connections, and Skills

What is unconscious bias in hiring? It might mean being passed over for a job opportunity because of your name or the name of the university where you obtained your degree. Maybe you don’t have a college degree, or you have a large, looming gap on your resume. Perhaps, despite a specialized skill set and incredible accomplishments, English is not your native language.

Here enters Northern Virginia Family Service's Training Futures program. Training Futures is a nationally recognized workforce development program that helps under- and unemployed adults secure living-wage, professional employment with the potential for advancement. It offers an innovative curriculum in a simulated hybrid office environment and provides trainees with tools, guidance, and confidence to successfully enter the local job market.

Established in 1996, this dynamic program has set up more than 2,500 people from diverse backgrounds and experiences to take the next step in their career. The intense 12-week program requires significant commitment from program participants, many of whom are working multiple jobs and/or caring for family members. The curriculum includes soft skills development, such as business communications and workplace etiquette; technical skills development, including training on essential work productivity software such as Microsoft Office Suite; interaction with local employers; and job search support, including resume building, networking, and mock interviews.

The Training Futures program has seen strong employment outcomes, especially given the DMV area's unique and tight job market. According to program manager Janice Halowich, in the last year, 44% of program graduates obtained new jobs within two months of graduation. Equally impressive, these graduates increased earnings by an average of 64%. In a region where housing and other costs of living are notably high, wage increases such as these are critical to economic selfsufficiency and overall health.

Last month, S4G partnered with Training Futures to support the underemployed and unemployed seeking better-paying, professional job opportunities. S4G provided NVFS with over $4300 in financial and in-kind donations to support its Training Futures Program. In-kind donations provided the program with needed supplies, including Microsoft 365 subscriptions, flash drives, wireless mouses and mousepads, batteries, and portfolio organizers. Financial donations will be used to provide scholarship and transportation assistance to Training Futures students. Lack of funds for tuition and transportation to training are common barriers to program participation. Sarah Crosley, Vice President of Development for NVFS, accepted the donation, stating, “This is the second time S4G selected an NVFS program to support, and in both instances, your generosity, energy, and thoughtfulness are incomparable. You listen to what's really needed by a program and then provide it.”

The highlight of this project was a breakfast event at the NVFS Training Futures site marked by powerful storytelling, networking, and connections that left both members and Training Futures trainees engaged, motivated, and inspired. S4G members and Training Futures trainees connected one-on-one and in small groups. Members heard from current program participants as well as a former alumna who has blossomed in her career after completing the program. They bravely and eloquently shared courageous stories of overcoming homelessness, surviving civil and political unrest in their home countries, recovering from life-changing accidents and health challenges, and reentering the workforce after extended career breaks for caregiving. It was clear that, in addition to the skills development, a hallmark of the Training Futures program is its success in instilling confidence and building a lasting and supportive community for program participants.

It was a wonderful learning experience, not only for the job seekers with disadvantages but for S4G members too. One trainee followed up with a S4G member, stating, “Thank you for the advice you shared with us as full-time moms returning to the workforce. Your insights helped me see motherhood in a new, positive light and showed me how to combine the skills I have gained as a mom and previously as an engineer.” To learn more: https://www.nvfs.org/ our-services/workforce-development/training-futures/ About Social4Good: S4G is an all-volunteer, grassroots organization that brings together engaged women who want to meet new people and support the organizations that make our community strong. ELEGANT HOLIDAY DECOR A Guide to Classy, Understated Christmas Styling

As an interior designer, one of the most frequent questions I get is how to decorate for Christmas in a way that’s classy and timeless—without going overboard on collectibles or filling every corner with holiday-themed items. There’s a fine line between chic and cluttered, and the key to achieving that balance lies in choosing simple, beautiful decor pieces that make an impact without overwhelming your space.

1. Embrace Neutral Tones and Muted Colors

Instead of traditional, bold reds and greens, opt for a neutral or muted color palette. This doesn’t mean abandoning holiday colors entirely but rather choosing tones that add sophistication and seamlessly blend with your existing decor. Consider wooden Christmas trees in soft, natural finishes, muted evergreen accents, and ornaments in white, brown, gold, or silver. Black or white reindeer statues can also add a touch of elegance without being overly festive. These subtle touches bring the spirit of the season into your space while maintaining a cohesive, sophisticated look.

2. Add Evergreens for a Natural, Elegant Touch

One of my favorite ways to elevate holiday decor is by incorporating evergreens—real or faux. Placing evergreen branches in pots, arranging them in vases, or using them in wreaths and garlands adds an elegant, natural element that feels both festive and timeless. The rich green color and organic texture of evergreens bring a classic warmth to any space, balancing beautifully with a neutral palette and creating a cozy, inviting atmosphere.

3. Choose Clear Lights for a Classic Glow

When it comes to lighting, clear Christmas lights are an excellent choice, especially indoors. Clear lights cast a warm, inviting glow that feels serene and timeless, in contrast to the lively, colorful lights often associated with outdoor displays. By using clear lights, you create a calm, cozy atmosphere that brings a sense of classic Christmas charm to your home.

4. Edit Your Accessories Thoughtfully

It’s tempting to put out every holiday collectible you own, but a more refined approach is to select a few high-quality pieces that make a statement. A space filled with too many decorations can quickly feel cluttered and lose its elegance. By carefully curating your holiday decor, you allow each item to stand out while maintaining a clean, sophisticated look. With fewer, thoughtfully chosen pieces, your space remains inviting, calm, and elegant—embracing the beauty of simplicity.

5. Displaying Family Heirlooms and Handmade Ornaments

Of course, there are many family heirlooms and children’s handmade ornaments that hold special meaning and simply belong in your holiday decor. I’m the first to admit that I can’t resist displaying my kids’ handmade ornaments. These pieces are part of what makes holiday decorating personal and heartfelt. The key is to mix them thoughtfully with neutral, elegant items so they stand out as cherished accents rather than getting lost in a busy display. Pairing a child’s ornament with neutral-colored ornaments and decor can help highlight it while maintaining a cohesive and elegant look

Creating

a Classy Christmas Look

Classy Christmas decor is all about simplicity, understated beauty, and thoughtful details. By choosing neutral tones, embracing clear lighting, and mixing treasured ornaments with subtle accents, you can create a holiday space that feels both festive and elegant. This approach not only celebrates the season but also ensures your home remains a calming and inviting space, perfect for holiday gatherings with family and friends.

At the end of the day, decorate however makes you and your family happiest. If colored lights are a hit with your kids, go for it! If a snowman Santa brings you joy, let him have a place of honor. Christmas is all about family, coziness, and celebrating your unique traditions. I’m here to o er ideas for creating a look that’s timeless, elegant, and beautiful. But remember, it’s perfectly okay if your Christmas doesn’t look like mine— what matters is that it’s meaningful and perfect for you and your family.

Creating a home that reflects your style and feels inviting is a joy that lasts well beyond the holiday season. Whether you’re looking to refresh a few rooms or transform your entire home, I’d love to help bring your vision to life. At Merrie Joy Interiors, I’m here to make the design process seamless, enjoyable, and uniquely tailored to you.
