This year a Nottinghamshire based designer is celebrating a huge milestone in her artistic career with local and national events

Recently Hannah Lane owner of Hannah Lane – Paper & Wood celebrated 20 years of creative projects, by exhibiting with Design Nation at Collect 2025 at Somerset house in London. She will also be attending Lady Bay Arts Trail in West Bridgford in May and Rutland Flower Show in August. More details regarding these events are available on her website.

Hannah is a maker in wood and paper employing traditional woodworking techniques to produce tactile bespoke artworks for exhibition, installation, and commission.

Her process combines two materials that began at the same source - wood, a material of longevity and paper, a short-term material that she recycles into a solid material to create a new shape and texture, thus extending its journey. As the pieces are hand worked each material’s grain exposes the consequences of her working actions, revealing the unseen internal imprint as the surface is scraped away.

Hannah has enjoyed working in the creative industries since she completed her degree at Nottingham Trent University in 2001 and Masters’ Degree at London Guildhall University in 2004. She has been invited to deliver many amazing and challenging projects both nationally and internationally; from suspended installations in Tokyo in the largest eco mall in Asia to a 21metre artwork in a building for the Ministry of Justice in the UK. Highlights have been showcasing her work in downtown New York, Colette in Paris, V & A Museum

and at Collect at Somerset House. Hannah’s work has been recognised and won many awards, including an award from Channel 4 and the Nottingham Open. Lane says, ‘I relish the challenge to produce bespoke, sustainable, and thought-provoking work for private and public commission and audience interaction’.

Hannah has been recognised for her unique business and creative process during her career by Theo Paphitis, Wayne Hemingway and Oliver Heath to name a few. Hannah’s practise which happened when she accidentally left a book out in the rain inspiring her to develop the internationally exhibited and award-winning Paperwork, a unique recycling technique using the printed pages of unwanted books and paper. The pages are layered and transformed back into a solid wood like material. Traditional wood working methods are then used to create interior objects from that material. The surface pattern of the paper when the objects are worked echoes wood grain. Wood becomes paper becomes wood.

Hannah’s work is committed to sustainability, combined with traditional making techniques and Hannah’s work is available for sales, interior and exterior installations, site specific commissions, and individual projects. Each product and material are hand-made by Hannah in her studio in Derbyshire, England; and is a one off, unique item in which the distinct surface texture cannot be recreated.

PLANTING SEEDS OF HOPE IN NOTTINGHAM

Green Hustle, the free festival in Nottingham, will bring together thousands of people to enjoy live entertainment, workshops, a makers market and hands-on activities to inspire greener living.

This year, the festival is proudly head lined by It’s in Nottingham, the city’s Business Improvement District (BID), reaffirming its commitment to support ing initiatives that make Nottingham a greener, more vibrant place to live, study, work and play. Green Hustle will take over Old Market Square on Saturday 31 May for a day of free summer fun open to all, under the theme of Growing Together.

SATURDAY 31 MAY 2025

Already lined up for this year is live music and entertainment from Cultural Vibrations, dancers, circus acts and a makers market featuring local producers. A Community Garden showcase, an Action Cafe and new listening hub will provide inspiration along with the latest in Nottingham-led research on nature and environment.

‘Pay what you feel’ hot meals will return with Himmah Community Kitchen serving up 550 last year, along with other local food catering from Veggies and Abeyo Ethiopia. There will be plenty of ways people can get involved on the day, whether it's hands-on planting activities, creative fun or simply turning up to enjoy a hot meal. Last year saw more than 10,000 people visit the free festival with 95 percent of those surveyed saying they were inspired to make a change such as volunteering and planting or changing buying habits and supporting local independents.

Festival co-director Adam Pickering said: “Green Hustle is a much needed opportunity to get together, regardless of age, what area you're from or your interests. Times might still be feeling hard for many, but we're determined to put everyone in the driving seat in making a difference and helping everyone in our community thrive. Like any great festival, there's something for everyone. But where else can you find it all for free? There'll be lots of different ways to get involved in taking climate action and helping nature. Whether it’s fashion, live music, learning a new skill or enjoying some freshly made food, everyone can join in and enjoy a great day without paying a penny.

“Our theme Growing Together celebrates all that grows, and all that's yet to grow. It's all about hope. Our young people, our big ideas, our incredible potential to get together and do great things… all these start with a seed, and the conditions we need. So let’s all grow together, and paint the town green.”

Alex Flint, CEO of It’s in Nottingham, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “We’re thrilled to support Green Hustle Festival as this year’s headline sponsor. At It’s in Nottingham, we believe in the power of community-driven initiatives to create lasting positive change. Green Hustle is a shining example of how creativity and collaboration can come together to make Nottingham a more sustainable city, and we're proud to be part of that journey.”

The festival - established in 2020 - also has a lasting impact through projects such as the planting of the permanent beds and planters in Old Market Square and the donation of the University of Nottingham pop up garden to Welbeck Primary School, to help children learn about growing food. Green Hustle also planted their 10,000th tree this winter in partnership with Trees for Cities. Ten Thousand Trees aims to connect people with local nature, especially young people, children and families living in built up urban areas.

In 2023, Green Hustle led a project funded by Raleigh with support from Canal and River Trust to revamp part of Nottingham Canal. The Wilford Street Wild life Ramp project brought the now-familiar upcycled metal heron to its watery home. As well as the funding from headline sponsor It's in Nottingham, Green Hustle is supported by Experian, Nottingham College and Savoy Systems.

Helen Emmett, Chief Financial Officer at Experian UK&I and a Nottingham resident, said: “Experian is delighted to support Green Hustle, knowing it means so much to Nottingham’s citizens, including many Experian colleagues. Many of my colleagues, like me, recognise the importance of collectively improving the local environment and ensuring Nottingham is seen as a vibrant, inclusive City.”

Matthew Bunn, Sustainability Lead at Nottingham College, said: “Nottingham College understands the importance of this festival and is delighted to support it. As a collective we can strive for a cleaner and more liveable city and this festival goes a long way in helping us all to achieve that goal.”

Green Hustle is delivered with the help of more than 100 partners, community groups and organisations, with hundreds of volunteer hours given last year to help bring it to life.

Three Bunkers £100k Golf Challenge

The annual Three Bunkers golf challenge has kicked off its 2025 appeal by focusing on how funds raised will help local beneficiaries.

Now in its 5th year and already having raised nearly £50k, The Three Bunkers Challenge involves 24 golfers playing 27 holes within 10 hours at courses in Derby, Leicester & Nottingham. All money raised goes to local charity Big C Little C which supports cancer research and children at risk.

This year, a major beneficiary will be the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre (CBTRC) which is based at The University of Nottingham, conducting pioneering, internationally recognised research aimed at improving the lives of young people like James Kerry.

Until 2024, eight year old James from Nottingham was leading a healthy and active lifestyle doing kick boxing and playing football. Following weeks of severe bouts of sickness and headaches, James was diagnosed with a brain tumour that had also spread to his spine. Showing incredible bravery and determination, James learned to walk again and started his own fund raising activities for CBTRC and has so far raised £32,000 from selling bracelets he makes himself and a sponsored walk around the Nottingham Forest City Ground pitch.

Spurred on by his Grandson’s bravery, Dave Chapman from MAF Finance Group, a previous participant in The Three Bunkers challenge approached the Three Bunkers organisers to see if there was a way to support CBTRC.

Commenting, challenge organiser Elliot Cook, from Simple Marketing Consultancy said, “BigC Little c was founded to support cancer research and children, so it made absolute sense to nominate CBTRC as one of the beneficiaries in 2025. We’ve committed to hold the challenge until £100,000 has been raised for Big C Little c to help them support local cancer research projects and initiatives that help young people.’’

This year’s Three Bunkers Challenge takes place on Friday 23 May 2025 and involves teams from Actons Solicitors, Fiscal Engineers, Finance for Enterprise, MAF Finance Group, Michael Reed Wealth Management, Shakespeare Martineau Solicitors, and Simple Marketing Consultancy.

All money raised will be donated to the charity Big C Little c which was founded in 2019 by business entrepreneurs, Andrew Springhall and Colin Shaw, former Chairman of PKF Cooper Parry, who joined forces to create a charity that would encourage East Midlands businesses to organise events to raise money for cancer

research, the NSPCC and other children related charities.

Every year over 450 children are diagnosed with a brain tumour. A huge range of research is carried out at the CBTRC, looking into as many aspects of child brain tumours as possible. It’s aim is to find a cure for all child brain tumours and to reduce the disability caused by them. Although the Centre’s research is progressing, it needs more funding to make the most of the scientific knowledge that is being uncovered in order to save more lives.

Andrew Springhall, from Big C Little c added, “ More often than not cancer treatment has worse side effects than the initial symptoms and institutions like CBTRC are doing an incredible job researching treatments that are more targeted on the cancer tumours which ultimately means patients enjoy a better outcome. We sincerely hope the money raised will progress cancer research and help children at risk.”

Players will commence the Challenge at 7am at Morley Hayes Golf Club, players then travel to Charnwood Forest Golf Club and

conclude at The Nottinghamshire Golf & Country Club, reaching three corners of the East Midlands Counties of Nottingham, Derby & Leicestershire, covering just over 70 miles.

The organisers also welcome support via online donations or gifting prizes which can be auctioned during the prize presentation. So far fourballs from Chevin Golf Club, Charnwood Forest & The Nottinghamshire have been gifted.

BREAD & LARD ISLAND CAFE

I have a secret. It is on the next street from my house and I have decided to be a bit more open as it is becoming common knowledge. Bread and Lard Island is my favourite cafe. Yes, it is practically spitting distance from my doorstep.

Yes, they play mostly 70’s/80’s and 90’s electronic and pop music. Yes, the owners and staff make it feel so relaxed and welcoming. All these things see me visit almost daily but the consistant quality of the food and coffee are what means I feel confident enough to fight anyone that disagrees with me.

Bread and Lard Island mainly run through the day but have started opening on Friday nights and offer a roast dinner on a Sunday. Focusing on the main reason I love them though – the

daytime menu. It is an eclectic mix of brunch and lunch items all done really well. On this Friday lunchtime I ordered the soup and The Northerner ordered the Cheese and Kimchi Toastie.

The soup has pumpkin/squash as the main flavour delivering a earthy sweetness but coconut milk and thai herbs make it really interesting. The warmth of the chilli lingers far longer than the soup, arming you for the cold outside. Served with fresh bread and cold salted butter, it is a mellow bowl of heaven.

The Cheese and Kimchi toastie is massive. Piled high and served with homemade coleslaw, salad and pickles to cut through a cheese explosion. The mellow cheese on the inside and fermented kimchi are a

I like eating out, trying new restaurants and being on the receiving end of great hospitality. I am a mum with 2 children (one baby, one 9 year old) so I include how the places I visit work for families. I have worked in bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs for most of my life. Good places should be supported, celebrated and shared.

flavour combo that patiently waits for you to realise how great they are together. The burnt cheese on the outside lacily adds a crunch of fruity chedder that doesn’t overpower the filling but elevates this toastie. Homemade coleslaw is such a treat – barely recogniseable to the stuff you get in supermarkets it should be called something different, something better.

I finished with a coffee and a Cinnamon bun. Made in house, the cinnamon bun was warm, doughy and had a firm exterior against the very soft dough inside. The cream cheese frosting and raisin and apple filling adding sweetness and kept everything sticky. I shared most of it with The Northerner and he reminisced about the day they made a cheese and ham version which he hasn’t seen since.

I realise I am now gushing and probably losing my audience. No where is without fault, but Bread and Lard Island is good in all the ways that I think is important. If you’re in Lady Bay and get a chance to visit I hope you find the same.

DIRECT STOVES’ GUIDE TO OUTDOOR COOKING

As the weather warms up, many of us are keen to fire up our outdoor cooking equipment and enjoy alfresco dining. Whether you’re entertaining guests or simply elevating your family dinners, cooking outdoors is a fantastic way to bring everyone together, enjoy delicious food and make the most of the sunshine.

With more options available than ever, from traditional barbecues to pizza ovens and outdoor grills, choosing the right equipment can feel overwhelming. To help you make the right choice, Joanna Humphreys, Fire and Stove Specialist at Direct Stoves shares her thoughts.

Pizza Ovens

“One of the most important factors when choosing an outdoor pizza oven is its fuel type, as this has a big impact on the way it functions and your cooking results.

For a traditional, authentic experience, a wood-fired pizza oven is the way to go. Wood produces intense, dry flames that caramelise the dough’s sugars, creating a distinctive flavor and quick cooking time. However, mastering a wood-fired oven takes practice—you’ll need to master the art of setting up kindling and starting a fire

control and easy cleanup.

If the wood-fired option sounds like far too much work, opt for the gasfired option. Ready at the flip of a switch, gas-fired pizza ovens require no pre-heating and allow for precise temperature control, making it easier to achieve consistent results. Plus, there’s no ash to clean up afterwards.”

Barbecues

“When it comes to barbecuing there are several options to consider. Charcoal barbecues promise that classic, smoky flavour and hands-on grilling experience. Stone and masonry barbecues offer a more permanent addition to the garden, often featuring built-in grills and excellent heat retention. For those who prioritise convenience, gas barbecues provide instant ignition, precise temperature

For serious barbecue lovers, stone and masonry models are the ultimate outdoor cooking appliance! Not only can they take pride of place in your garden, but they are also highly durable, often lasting many years, as well as offering a large cooking space for everyone at your party. Another added benefit is the level of heat they give out from the stone can provide heat for your patio even after you have finished cooking - you could even light a small fire just to take the chill off as you relax into the evening."

With a wide range of brands to choose from, Direct Stoves has everything you need to create the ultimate outdoor entertaining setup. From portable pizza ovens and barbecues to stylish fire pits, your garden will be ready to welcome summer in style.

Someone is behaving mysteriously and possibly avoiding your gaze. You want answers will prepare for confrontation at any cost. Developments at work will be to your advantage, but not everyone will be happy with management decisions and could stage a protest.

At last you feel more in control of your love life and now calling all the shots. A treasured friend at work will keep your secrets safe, but may ask you for a massive favour. You may hatch a cunning little plan to catch someone out that you no longer trust, because you have good reason. Attend social functions and look your dapper best, as you never know whom you make shake hands with next and what door could open.

Your partner and you will excitedly discuss future plans to set up home together, or travel the world, perhaps both even. Make a dream come true and do something proactive about realising a much desired ambition. Don't allow golden opportunities to pass you by by wasting time.

Whilst enjoying a first date with someone new you may discover that he or she has a murky past, with a shed load of unresolved baggage. Party invitations will come flooding in and you could find yourself enjoying a fun time with a new trendy social, set whose motto is 'live life to the full'. A business deal could be struck between yourself and someone you feel you could work with in the future.

Just when you thought you had everything worked out and going to plan, a new problem will arise that will demand your time and attention. Your partner will show concern that you are taking on board problems that do not concern you, and be afraid that your good work could backfire. Listen to wise words of advice and back off. Recent events have left you feeling cold and disillusioned. You may even have quarrelled with a good friend or someone who was looking out for you, but you failed to appreciate their sincerity. It's never too late to put right what is wrong, but will your stubborn pride let you make the first move? It will be your loss if you don’t. Changes at work may affect your position forcing you to start thinking about doing something completely different. A house move could also be on the cards, sooner than you think.

Slowly but surely you are realising and appreciating what a strong positive position you are in. All the things that previously used to upset and disturb you no longer have any impact. You have dealt with the past and refuse to be dragged into other people's dramas. Close friends will include you in their party plans, and if single you may be introduced to someone who will become a soul mate.

You have made up your mind to go forwards and leave the past behind, where it belongs. Even if you are single and not in a relationship, does it really matter? Once you are happy being who you are and able to love yourself, then you can choose whom to befriend and who to form a new romance with. Your wonderful sense of humour will always attract friends towards you, which is why, if you think about it, you never walk alone anyway, do you??

Listen to your instincts. Someone you thought was a friend isn’t and you will pick up the vibes. Perhaps he or she has been avoiding you or not been in close contact like before. It's their loss not yours. If you are worried and stressed about money and work, something will come up that will be to your advantage and will dig you out of a deep hole. You may seriously think of selling up and relocating because you are ready for a change.

As a very private person you are choosy as to whom you chat freely with about your personal life. There are very few people who actually know anything about you and you like it that way. Someone who has seriously caused you emotional pain in the past is now paying for it. No skin off your nose. You have moved forwards at warp speed and in control of what you do, spend and think. Don’t change yourself to please anyone, just remain true to yourself.

These days you are very street wise indeed. You have seen and heard just about everything and tend to take what most people brag about with a pinch of salt. Nothing much impresses you and often will turn down invitations preferring to stay home and read a book instead. Work will continue to tick over, with you in the driving seat and very much in control. If self employed, you will make a lot of money, but that’s because you put in the time and effort.

Making More Room

Converting your loft is a practical and rewarding way to create more space in your house. Whether you need an extra bedroom, a home office, a playroom, or simply more storage, a loft conversion can meet your needs while adding value to your property. Here are some steps and considerations to help you make the most of your loft conversion.

Assess Feasibility

Before you start, assess the feasibility of a loft conversion. Check the height, pitch, and structure of your roof. Ideally, you need a minimum head height of 2.2 meters to ensure the space is usable. Consult with a structural engineer to evaluate whether your roof structure can support the conversion.

Plan Your Space

Decide how you want to use the space. This will determine the design and layout. For a bedroom, you'll need space for a bed and storage. For an office, consider desk space and shelving. Sketch out a rough floor plan to visualize the space.

Structural Considerations

Reinforce the floor if necessary. Loft floors may need strengthening to support additional weight. Install appropriate insulation to make the space comfortable year-round. Proper insulation also helps in soundproofing and energy efficiency.

Lighting and Ventilation

Maximize natural light by installing skylights or dormer windows. These also provide ventilation, which is crucial for maintaining air quality. Plan for artificial lighting with a mix of ambient, task, and accent lights to create a welcoming atmosphere.

Access

Ensure safe and practical access to your loft. A staircase is the best option, but it needs to be carefully designed to fit within the existing structure. Spiral staircases or compact designs can save space.

Utilities

Consider the placement of utilities like heating, electricity, and plumbing. You may need to extend existing systems or install new ones. This is crucial if you're adding a bathroom or kitchenette.

Finishing Touches

Choose finishes and furnishings that complement the rest of your home. Use light colours to make the space feel larger and more open. Built-in storage solutions can maximize space and keep the area clutterfree.

Budget

Set a realistic budget and include a contingency for unexpected expenses. Loft conversions can be cost-effective compared to building extensions, but costs can vary depending on the complexity of the project.

Professional Help

Hiring professionals like architects, builders, and interior designers can ensure your loft conversion is done to a high standard. They can provide valuable advice and manage the project efficiently.

By converting your loft, you can effectively increase the living space in your home, making it more functional and enjoyable. Whether you're accommodating a growing family or creating a personal retreat, a loft conversion is a worthwhile investment.

The Perfumes & Aftershaves Loved by Britain’s Most Famous Family

What does royalty actually smell like?

According to research conducted by British tailoring brand Edit Suits, members of the royal family have long favoured a carefully curated set of fragrances - from classic aftershaves to soft florals - that reflect their public personas and private preferences.

Their findings reveal a list of timeless, iconic, and in some cases surprisingly affordable scents, worn by everyone from King Charles and Prince William to Kate Middleton. Many of these fragrances are still available to buy today - not in palace gift shops, but in well-known UK retailers across the country.

King Charles

Green Irish Tweed by Creed Price: £275 for 100ml, available at: Harrods, Selfridges, Liberty London

Regal, earthy and enduring - Green Irish Tweed is widely believed to be King Charles’ go-to fragrance. With notes of lemon, peppermint, violet leaf and sandalwood, it’s fresh but grounded, timeless but not overpowering. First launched in 1985, it remains a best-seller for a reason - and perfectly matches the King’s understated sense of heritage style.

Prince William

Eau Sauvage by Dior Price: £72 for 100ml, available at: Boots, John Lewis, House of Fraser

A clean, classic fragrance with notes of citrus, rosemary and vetiver, Eau Sauvage reflects Prince William’s polished but practical image. Said to be his scent of choice, it’s elegant, masculine and widely accessible. A versatile staple that suits both formal occasions and day-to-day wear.

Prince Harry

L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme by Issey Miyake

Price: £53 for 125ml, available at: The Perfume Shop, Superdrug, Debenhams

Light, modern and aquatic, this minimalist fragrance

from Issey Miyake is reported to be Prince Harry’s long-time favourite. With yuzu, bergamot, nutmeg and sandalwood, it’s contemporary and quietly confident. Ideal for those who want a clean, unfussy fragrance that still leaves an impression.

The Princess of Wales

Orange Blossom by Jo Malone

Price: £118 for 100ml, available at: Selfridges, John Lewis, Harrods

The Princess of Wales is famously associated with Orange Blossom by Jo Malone, which she wore on her wedding day. The scent features delicate notes of clementine flower, white lilac and vetiver, creating a graceful, refined profile that perfectly complements Kate’s timeless style. The brand even reportedly scented Westminster Abbey with the same fragrance for the royal ceremony.

Fragrance Fit for Royalty and Available on the High Street. From heritage brands like Creed to accessible classics by Dior and Jo Malone, the royal family’s fragrance choices showcase a clear preference for elegance, restraint and longevity - much like their wardrobe choices.

While some royal favourites come with a luxury price tag, others are readily available at high street retailers from around £50, making it easier than ever to channel a bit of royal refinement.

A spokesperson from Edit Suits, who conducted the research, said:

“Fragrance is often the most personal element of someone’s style, and in the case of the royal family, it’s no different. These scent choices reflect their personalities - understated, classic, and deeply rooted in tradition. Much like tailoring, a good fragrance is timeless and speaks volumes without ever being loud.”

pre-teen skincare routines

In recent months, there has been a growing concern over pre-teens and teenagers using an excessive amount of luxury skincare products. However, many of these trending products are agerestricted due to the potential damage they may cause to young people’s skin.

In light of this ongoing discussion, experts at the beauty and wellness marketplace, Fresha, have compiled a dos and don’ts guide for pre-teen skincare routines. Steer clear of risky products

Avoid using retinol

Retinol has become a popular product on social media that is widely used by beauty influencers. However, due to the product’s anti-aging ingredients, it is generally only to be used by people in their mid-twenties and older. When prescribed by a doctor or a dermatologist, retinol can be used as an acne treatment. Other than this, it is an entirely unnecessary product to be used by pre-teens because it can have some damaging consequences on juvenile skin. Retinol can irritate pre-teen’s skin due to the product’s high acid levels and can cause premature skin damage. The product also reduces the skin’s natural protection against the sun, making retinol users more susceptible to UV rays and sun damage.

Ditch the hydroxy acid

Like retinol, hydroxy acid is typically used to prevent wrinkles and fine lines. Due to the product’s antiaging ingredients, it’s generally advised not to be used by people under the age of 25. Due to the product’s high acid levels, pre-teens should avoid it altogether. When used on adolescent skin, hydroxy acid can irritate and worsen skin

conditions due to the product’s removal of the top layer of skin cells. Hydroxy acid, like retinol, can also make users more susceptible to lasting sun damage, which is why pre-teens should avoid it unless prescribed as acne treatment. Ultimately, pre-teens should steer clear of anti-aging products entirely. As well as causing potential skin damage, antiaging products can also spark harmful and pre-mature insecurities about wrinkles and other natural effects of aging.

Push aside the exfoliating acids

Most exfoliating acids are too harsh to be used on young people’s skin and should be avoided in pre-teen skincare routines. The products contain high levels of acid, which are intended to remove dead skin cells but ultimately irritate preteens' skin. Experts have also suggested that exfoliating acids may even disrupt the natural skin barrier, causing itching, dryness, and skin swelling.

Once again, it’s also risky for pre-teens to use exfoliating acids due to the increased risk of sun damage, making it a product to avoid in pre-teens' skincare routines. It’s important to note that preteens can use milder exfoliating acids as acne treatment, but only when advised by a doctor or dermatologist.

Stay away from vitamin C serums

Some benefits of vitamin C serums include reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Because of this, vitamin C serums are an unnecessary product to be used in pre-teens’ skincare routines. Skin experts have also debated the safety of vitamin C serums for children’s skin. Some claim these serums can worsen skin conditions like eczema due to the product’s high acid levels. Overall, it’s best to steer clear of expensive serums entirely, as the antiaging benefits of these products will be entirely unnecessary for pre-teens.

Introduce a safe routine

Despite the dangers of some viral skincare products, pre-teen skincare doesn’t have to be an entirely negative subject. It can be positive for pre-teens to express an interest in looking after their skin, which is why some products can be a great place to start a safe skincare routine.

Rely on a trustworthy moisturiser

Moisturiser is an essential part of many skincare routines and a safe product for pre-teens. A light layer of moisturiser can improve hydration and prevent dryness, so it’s a great introduction to the world of skincare.

Experiment with pimple patches

Applying a pimple patch on a blemish can reduce redness and inflammation, making them a fun and exciting product for pre-teen skincare routines.

Never underestimate SPF

Due to the popularity of these products on TikTok, many pre-teens may already be applying SPF products in their skincare routines. #SPF currently has over 6 billion views on TikTok and has over 232,000 posts, showing its relevance on social media. SPF products are an incredibly safe and beneficial product to incorporate into pre-teen skincare routines as they provide protection against the sun. SPF should always be the last step in any skincare routine and should be applied at least 20 minutes before going outside for maximum effect.

Try out a mild cleanser

Cleansing is an effective way to rid your skin of dirt and oil, making it a reliable breakout preventive. Because of this, mild cleansing products, such as gel cleansers, can be a safe and refreshing part of a pre-teen skincare routine.

LEAVE A GIFT IN YOUR WILL TO LINCS & NOTTS AIR AMBULANCE

Malcolm and his wife Pat have decided to leave a gift to Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance in their Wills so that the charity can continue to save lives in the future.

“Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance is extremely important to agricultural workers, the helicopter a welcome sight as it appears like a yellow knight in shining armour flying across the fields to help a farmer in distress. This is why I am leaving a gift in my Will to LNAA”

Malcolm Haywood comes from a farming family, ever since the 1700s his family on his mother’s side has been involved in arable farming. And over the years Mike can recall many instances of farmworkers being injured in agricultural accidents and needing the support of the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA).

He says: “One time, a farmer friend of mine got caught in a potato machine. But the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance

got there just in time, treated him at the farm and transported him to hospital. It could have been such a different outcome had it not been for the LNAA”

Incidents like that are why Malcolm

believes so strongly in the importance of LNAA and being able to fly to those isolated farms swiftly and tend to the most horrific of farming injuries, to save precious time and then get people quickly to the hospital.

IMMERSIVE ESCAPE ROOM AT NATIONAL JUSTICE MUSEUM

Travel back to the 1830’s as you solve clues to prove your innocence and explore hidden spaces in Nottingham’s ancient gaol

Following a successful pilot last year, the National Justice Museum has announced more dates for its immersive, multiple-choice escape room that takes players into the depths of their authentic Georgian gaol.

The game takes players back to Nottingham in 1831. King George IV died the previous year, and King William IV is yet to be crowned, triggering the dissolving of parliament and a general election that leaves the city on the brink of riots. The Reform Bill leads to civil disturbance across the country when The House of Lords blocks a motion by parliament to give more men the vote than just nobility and landowners.

You find yourself in Nottingham’s Narrowmarsh, a cramped, smelly slum rife with criminal activity. The local constable has found you at the site of a Reform Bill riot where a local pub was set ablaze. Two people lost their lives - and you are the central suspect, accused of arson and manslaughter. If found guilty, the death penalty beckons.

Over the course of an hour, players will explore the Grade II* listed Georgian museum, including areas not usually open to the public - from the slums of Narrowmarsh, the exercise yard, and cells of the gaol. Solve puzzles, and gather your evidence before deciding –will you stand trial and try to prove your innocence, or will you try to escape your fate?

The game has been created in collaboration with Sacha Coward, a freelance museum professional who

has worked at local, national, and international museums and galleries. Sacha has produced events, managed educational programmes, and built gallery interactives and interpretation. He is passionate about working with hidden histories and underrepresented audiences. He has created escape rooms for the National Trust, Royal Museums Greenwich, Oxford University, Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Maritime Museum and more.

“The whole experience was amazing although a little intense at times, and after speaking with friends who had done other escape rooms before, they confirmed that this one was like no other.”

Nottingham Post

“Intertwining Nottingham’s rich history into the game adds another layer to an already fun format. Compared to many escape rooms, which confine players to a small room or two, Guilty?! makes excellent use of the centuries-old gaol, courtyard and accompanying spaces.”

LeftLion

“With different endings depending on what you decide, this innovative element brings a choose-your-ownadventure charm that puts you in the driving seat!“

Visit Nottinghamshire

“Our games master’s presence ended up being one of my favourite things about the whole experience... probably my favourite museum-escape room crossover”

The Escape Roomer

Guilty?! A National Justice Museum Escape Room is on sale now for groups of 4-6 people, available on select evenings between 17 April to 31 May 2025, with more dates to be confirmed soon. For more information and to book, visit nationaljusticemuseum.org.uk

In spring, you can avoid the large crowds of tourists and enjoy the warm sunshine. “Keep in mind that this region offers not only stunning sea views but also colorful small towns along the coastline, filled with rich history and local art. Take a car and appreciate the scenic drives around the Amalfi coast, beautiful villas, and gardens. But be ready to conquer some sights on foot, climbing some steep hills,” notes Modis.

Never-Ending Beauty of Provence and Lavender Fields

If you prefer calm but inspiring mornings, think about having a cup of coffee or tea on the terrace, surrounded by

purple lavender fields, and enjoying the romance of Southern France. In the unique landscape of Provence, spring offers a breathtaking view of eternal flower fields. “Just imagine charming picnics or delicious dinners made with locally grown food in these picturesque surroundings. Moreover, sunny spring days are perfect for exploring the idyllic countryside and historic villas in the region. If you are looking for something even more exciting, you can choose a private jet to reach Southern Italy and catch the sunset on the Amalfi Coast. Exploring the beautiful architecture and majestic historical sites of Granada, Cordoba, or Seville will leave you breathless, these are true architectural miracles. The best time to visit cities in Andalusia is in the blooming spring because you can avoid long queues and tiring heat. Marton Modis explains, “The region of Andalusia is also known for its vibrant festivals. The traditional celebrations, called ferias, are bursts of music, flamenco dancing, engaging festivities, and delicious local cuisine. One of the most impressive views during these festivals is horse

parades. The best time to participate in the festivities and to capture stunning pictures is in April or early May.”

Wild Beauty of Nature in the Azores

Spring is the perfect time to explore this destination as nature here is in all its glory. Spring is the best time to see the beauty of the lush islands,” highlights Modis.

CRAFT YOUR OWN SEL F-CARE

RITUAL

B Calm, the wellness brand founded by Clinical Aromatherapist Becky Pope, proudly unveils its latest innovation – the Personalised Body + Face Care Set. Designed to empower individuals to create a unique selfcare ritual, this customisable trio features a hydrating mist, nourishing carrier oil, and pure essential oil blend to support radiant skin and holistic well-being.

A Personal Journey to Healing

Feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and in need of calm? You’re not alone. Stress takes a toll on both skin and mind, leading to inflammation, irritation, and exhaustion. Becky Pope, an expert Clinical Aromatherapist and the founder of B Calm, knows this firsthand.

After struggling with perioral dermatitis and migraine with aura from chronic stress, Becky discovered the profound connection between stress, gut health, and skin conditions. Conventional treatments failed her, leading her to explore nature’s most powerful remedies—essential oils.

“A little plant power changed my life,” Becky shares. “Essential oils were the catalyst for a huge transformation in what I put into my body and onto my skin. Looking back, it now seems so obvious! And it's my mission to help support others in finding balance, calm, and healing.”

Did you know that essential oils can begin relieving stress in just 22

seconds?

When inhaled, they send signals directly to the limbic brain—the control centre for emotions—triggering an

immediate calming response. Within 2 minutes, they circulate in the bloodstream, and within 20 minutes, they support the entire body’s natural healing processes. This makes them a powerful tool for restoring balance, soothing the nervous system, and supporting skin health from within.

Natural Approach to Hay Fever Treatment

While many of us look forward to summer, and a enjoying a more outdoor lifestyle, for others it heralds Hay Fever season and the associated sneezing, itchy, watery eyes, nasal congestion, runny nose and headaches it brings and that make life a misery on a daily basis. Not to mention those faced with sitting exams at this time of year.

While various treatments are available to alleviate these symptoms, some can cause drowsiness and a reduced reaction speed, however there are natural remedies, many derived from bees. Honey Heaven is an artisanal business that, as the name suggests has a focus on honeys and bee related goods. Their range is organic and they recommend three specific products to help with hay fever misery.

Organic Propolis Extract High Potency and Propolis spray for kids both 30ml £12

Derived from bees, propolis has gained attention for its remarkable health benefits, particularly in combating Hay Fever:

Anti-inflammatory properties: Propolis contains a rich blend of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, and terpenes, which contribute to its powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Hay fever symptoms are primarily caused by an allergic reaction to airborne substances such as pollen or dust mites. Propolis can help reduce inflammation in the nasal passages, thereby alleviating congestion and easing breathing difficulties associated with hay fever.

Natural antihistamine:

Histamine is a chemical released by the body during an allergic reaction, leading to symptoms like sneezing and itching, causing many issues for hay fever sufferers. Propolis has been found to possess natural antihistamine properties, which can help inhibit the release of histamine and reduce its effects on the body. Propolis can effectively combat hay fever symptoms and provide relief by acting as a natural antihistamine.

Immune system support:

A robust immune system is vital for combating allergies, including hay fever. Propolis contains bioactive compounds that boost the immune system's function, helping the body better respond to allergens. Propolis can minimize the severity and duration of hay fever symptoms by enhancing immune response.

Anti-allergenic effects:

In addition to its anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties, propolis exhibits anti-allergenic effects. It is suggested that propolis can modulate the immune system's response to allergens, reducing the sensitivity and allergic reactions triggered by substances like pollen.

Natural antioxidant:

Propolis is renowned for its potent antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help protect the body against damage caused by harmful free radicals. Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress often exacerbate hay fever symptoms. By neutralizing free radicals, propolis can reduce inflammation and alleviate the intensity of hay fever symptoms.

6. Relief for sore throat and cough: Hay fever can irritate the throat and cause a persistent cough. Propolis is known for its soothing and antimicrobial effects, making it an excellent natural remedy for relieving a sore throat and suppressing coughing. It can help alleviate throat inflammation and reduce cough frequency, providing additional comfort to hay fever sufferers. Propolis is a natural substance that offers

numerous benefits for individuals struggling with hay fever. Its anti-inflammatory properties, natural antihistamine effects, immune system support, and antioxidant activity make it an ideal remedy for alleviating the symptoms of hay fever. It can also relieve sore throats and coughs, commonly associated with this allergic condition. However, consulting with a healthcare professional before starting any new treatment regimen is always advisable.

Organic Honey infused with Bee Pollen, Propolis, and Royal Jelly 300g £18.00

For those who prefer to disguise their propolis in a sweeter format, this divine blend of Mother Nature's finest gifts is lovingly crafted to deliver exceptional taste and wellness benefits. The combination of bee pollen, propolis and royal jelly makes this honey a superpower during hay fever season. Some people believe that consuming small amounts of bee pollen can help desensitise the body to allergens and reduce hay fever symptoms over time, similar to the concept of using local honey.

Royal Jelly is a gelatinous substance produced by honey bees to feed the queen bees and their young and is widely claimed to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress so again is useful in combating the effects of hay fever.

Organic CBD Honey 300g £25

Anti-inflammatory properties of CBD can also help with hay fever symptoms. Anti-inflammatory properties may help reduce inflammation in the nasal passages and alleviate symptoms like congestion and runny nose associated with hay fever. Some research suggests that CBD may modulate the immune system's response, potentially reducing allergic reactions. Honey Heaven’s CBD Honey combines organic Full Spectrum CBD oil with premium Organic Hungarian Honey. The oil lends a delicious nutty flavour to the naturally sweet honey which makes it ideal not just for spreading on toast but also in baking or salad dressings so it’s not just helpful for hay fever but it’s delicious too.

Don’t let Hay Fever ruin your summer – the bees have been busy preparing these natural remedies so it’s only fair to give them a go!

TRANSFORM YOUR SLEEP HYGIENE

Fresh Sheets, Fresh Sleep

While there is no strict rule to follow when it comes to washing your sheets, we’d recommend washing them more than once a month to maintain good hygiene and comfort. Bed sheets tend to accumulate sweat, body oils, and dead skin cells, which can lead to the growth of bacteria. Regularly washing your sheets not only helps prevent this build up but also keeps your mattress fresh and free from unwanted contaminants.

Dust Management

Dust and dirt can accumulate over time, particularly in rooms that don’t see much activity. Sleeping in a dusty environment is not only unhygienic but can also pose health risks, potentially leading to respiratory issues down the line. To help prevent dust buildup, we recommend choosing a bed frame with a smooth surface, such as wood or metal, which makes it easier to wipe away dust before it accumulates. The Suzanne Metal Bed Frame is a perfect example. With its sleek finish and open design, it’s easy to clean and access, allowing you to keep your sleep space fresh and free of dust.

Mattress TLC

We would recommend changing your memory foam mattress every 10 years, or before this if you notice any lumps or dips. However, there are things you can do to prolong its lifespan, which ties into overall sleep hygiene. Regularly changing your bedding, using a mattress protector, and rotating rather than flipping your mattress occasionally helps maintain its cleanliness and comfort. These simple steps not only protect your mattress but also ensure a more hygienic sleep environment, contributing to better sleep quality and overall well-being.

Create A Sleep Sanctuary

Many people assume that sleep hygiene is only about physical cleanliness, but mental hygiene is just as crucial for a good night’s sleep. Your bedroom should be a sanctuary for rest, and creating the right environment plays a key role in your sleep quality. Keeping the room cool, dark, and quiet while eliminating distractions like the blue light from phones, street lamps, or background noise helps protect your natural sleep cycle, leading to healthier, more restful sleep.

The great British outdoors; a sprawling garden, a pint-sized patio, or a balcony just big enough for a deck chair - it holds a special place in our hearts. But how are we actually using these spaces? Lights4fun, the UK’s leading decorative lighting brand, has uncovered some illuminating insights, from our love of fairy lights to regional quirks that prove no two Brits entertain the same way.

To mark the arrival of spring and the launch of TruGarden, Lights4fun’s first-ever garden furniture collection, new research reveals that, rather than letting size limit style or functionality, people are transforming patios, terraces, gardens, and even the smallest balconies into multi-functional outdoor spaces, creating stylish, usable extensions of the home. Dubbed Britain’s ‘Extra Room,’ these areas are being designed to work smarter, not harder.

SIZE DOESN’T MATTER…IF YOU HAVE THE RIGHT LIGHTING

Forget acres of manicured lawns, 44% of Brits prefer a smaller outdoor space because it requires less maintenance. In fact, over half (52%) would rather have a well-lit, well-furnished small outdoor space than a large, empty one. 66% of Brits say outdoor lighting makes small spaces feel bigger and 32% of us (approx. 17.3 million people) use decorative lighting in our outside spaces, whilst 70% agree that a small outdoor space can feel spacious with good design. Proof that twinkling fairy lights and clever storage solutions trump sheer square footage!

SHINE A LIGHT ON OUTDOOR SPACES

BEST GARDEN IN THE STREET?

Not for 72% of us who would like our outside spaces to look better. Or the 8 million people who avoid hosting outside due to uncomfortable garden furniture (15% of Brits), indicating a need for better seating solutions that enhance usability.

SPRING INTO ACTION: THE GREAT OUTDOOR MIGRATION BEGINS IN APRIL

For most of us (58%), spring marks the moment we finally emerge from hibernation, with April being the magic month when we reclaim our outdoor spaces. Having said that, there’s still 9% of us that are early starters, using their outside spaces from January! But we’re fickle creatures, once autumn rolls in, more than half (56%) retreat indoors, with October seeing a mass exodus of garden-goers (27%).

BBQS, BIRTHDAYS & WORK MEETINGS

What are we actually doing in our gardens? BBQs (38%) and family meals (36%) top the list, but one in five (20%) have hosted birthday parties, and 5% have even held work meetings outdoors. Londoners, always the trendsetters, are the biggest fans

of outdoor offices; 17% work solo outside, while 11% have turned their gardens into corporate meeting rooms… Who needs Zoom when you have a sun-drenched patio?

And for those who really push the boundaries of outdoor hosting, 3% of Brits have hosted stag dos, weddings, and even funerals in their outdoor spaces. Younger people are also fans of elevating their outside dining experience, with 13% adding food and drinks menus to special occasions for their lucky guests. This was also a popular choice in London (16%) and the North West (10%), compared to the UK average of 6%.

WHY WE HOST (OR DON’T HOST!)

Of those who prefer hosting outside, two-thirds (65%) say it’s because of the fresh air, with this being particularly popular among those aged 55+ compared to 18-34s (77% vs. 52%). Other popular reasons include it being a nice change from being indoors (58%), feeling more cheerful (48%), and having more space for children and pets to run around (42%).

Conversely, those who prefer hosting indoors cite avoiding unpredictable or unpleasant weather (55%) as their main reason, with the

The Skye 8-Seater Oval Dining Set £3,215.00
The Arran Cushion Box £445.00

let’s not forget Londoners, who are leading the way with outdoor chandeliers (10%) and tiki bars (11%), because.. why not?

WHAT’S THE ULTIMATE OUTDOOR LUXURY?

Move over garden gnomes, the UK’s dream outdoor additions are far more indulgent. A hot tub tops the wish list (18%), followed by a full lounge set (14%) and fire pits or swing chairs (both 13%).

SHARED SPACES: THE UNSUNG HEROES OF OUTDOOR HOSTING

older generation being far more concerned about it (72% of 55+ vs. 35% of 18-34s). Other key reasons include easier food preparation and serving (48%), easier access to amenities (34%), and less setup hassle (28%).

LIGHTS, CAMERA, OUTDOOR ACTION!

Half (50%) of Brits have spruced up their outdoor spaces for special occasions, and lighting is the top choice. Fairy lights, whether classic white or multicoloured, are the nation’s go-to (both 17%), with candles (16%) and lanterns (13%) also making an appearance. And

The Lismore Sofa Set £2,495.00

It’s not just private gardens that are getting a workout. Shared and communal spaces are proving surprisingly popular. 17% of those with access use them for dining with family or working, while 11% have gone all out by hosting stag & hen parties, 10% for wedding parties, and 9% for funerals (apologies to the neighbours!).

THE TAKEAWAY?

FAIRY LIGHTS MAKE EVERYTHING BETTER

The verdict is in, regardless of whether you have a mansion-worthy garden or a micro-balcony, Brits love to make the most of their outdoor spaces. Lighting is no longer an afterthought; it’s becoming one of the most important elements of a considered outdoor space. A well-designed garden doesn’t just bring personal enjoyment, it also adds kerb-appeal and social value.

And with the right lighting (and maybe a hot tub), even the smallest space can feel like a comfortable and inviting ‘Extra Room’.

Opinium surveyed 2,050 UK adults between 21st - 25th February 2025.

MODERN FARMHOUSE

Known for its clean lines, natural textures and rustic charm, modern farmhouse décor is having a moment in the spotlight

Amthal Karim, Head of Design at Furniture And Choice comments: “With the arrival of spring, sunshine and blooming flowers signal a time for a much needed refresh. Known for its cosy, approachable charm, modern farmhouse décor brings together rustic elements alongside clean lines and modern furniture.

Modern farmhouse’s recent surge in popularity has a lot to do with recent social media trends. Love or hate her, the Duchess of Sussex’s recent Netflix show has got people talking not just about her recipes but also her dreamy farm-to-table set-up. If you’ve got domestic goddess aspirations, it’s easy to fantasise about a large central kitchen island with Shakerstyle cabinets, hanging saucepans and a neutral palette.

Besides that, the term ‘farmcore’ aesthetic has also been very popular on TikTok, thanks to the slow living lifestyle trend which romanticises the countryside and a return to nature. The great thing is you don’t have to live in the countryside to achieve this look - you just need to focus on the key elements of this style, such as clean lines, choosing natural materials and a neutral colour palette. It’s about enjoying the simple pleasures in life, like bringing home a fresh bouquet of flowers

or sampling the best seasonal produce at your local farmers market.

As a interior décor style, modern farmhouse has constantly been evolving with the times but has stayed true to its core themes. With its focus on natural textures like wood, stone and cotton, there is now more emphasis on choosing eco-friendly materials and being intentional with what you decorate. The neutral palette remains, but if you want to add pops of colour, take inspiration from earth tones. Yellows, burnt oranges or terracotta are exciting ways to perk up a space, while sage green and deep blues are a great way to pay homage to the ocean and foliage. Kitchens with splashes of green and blue have been trending over the last few years giving modern farmhouse a more sophisticated look and adding depth to the space.

What we can take away from modern farmhouse’s continued popularity is that it’s both aspirational yet simple enough to replicate. There is a sense of effortlessness and ease when stepping into a modern farmhouse kitchen or living room where you are welcomed with cosy textures and relaxing neutrals. It’s a style that doesn’t have to be over the top and is instead there to greet you with a warm hug.”

In an all-girls environment, students learn to speak up and speak out, even those who struggle with confidence. Research by the Girls’ Day School Trust 1 shows that girls are 93% more likely to participate in class discussions compared to when boys are present.

IN THE CLASSROOM

How many girls are asked to sit next to the naughty boys in class to keep them quiet? At NGHS, we believe a girl’s education shouldn’t suffer so her male peers can stay on track. And with much smaller class sizes, we can get to know and understand your child as

an individual, tailoring our teaching approach to best meet her needs.

BREAKING STEREOTYPES

Gender stereotypes are ingrained from as early as age 7 but in an all-female environment, young girls are more likely to break free from these stereotypes and enjoy “boys’” activities. At NGHS, this might include playing football and cricket, enjoying Physics and Technology, or applying for veterinary medicine or a pilot’s licence. In fact girls in single-sex schools are 75% more likely to study advanced science courses 2 and 60% more likely to pursue STEM careers 3 .

ALL THIS FOR LESS THAN YOU THINK

The cost of independent school education has been in the news a lot recently, but it’s an investment in your daughter’s future that you’ll never regret. You’ll give her a head start as she develops lifelong confidence, opportunities, and friendships. Compare our fees to other

Getting your car looking like new

After a car accident, one of the most common steps in restoring a vehicle to its original condition is getting it resprayed with new paintwork.

The need for respraying typically arises when the car suffers visible damage to its paint, such as scratches, dents, or more severe bodywork damage. While repairs to the vehicle’s frame and structure are necessary, the paint job is crucial for both aesthetic and protective reasons.

The process of respraying a car begins with a thorough assessment of the damage. Any dents or scratches that are present will need to be repaired or filled in before the painting process begins. This is followed by sanding down the existing paint to create a smooth surface for the new coat of paint to adhere to. If the car has any rust, it must be addressed as well, as failing to treat rust can lead to further deterioration over time.

Next, the car is cleaned to remove any dirt, grease, or debris. This ensures that the paint applies evenly and does not get contaminated. After that, a primer is usually applied to provide better adhesion for the paint and to prevent corrosion.

Once the primer has dried, the new paint is sprayed on in layers. Multiple coats are often applied to ensure even coverage and to achieve a highquality, durable finish. Finally, a clear

coat is applied to protect the paintwork and provide a glossy, smooth finish. This process can take several days, depending on the extent of the damage and the quality of the work being done.

Getting a car resprayed not only restores its appearance but also helps protect the vehicle from the elements, keeping it in good condition and maintaining its value.

Care in the Community

A DECADE OF EXCEPTIONAL CARE

The Grand Care Centre on Greythorn Drive in West Bridgford is celebrating a decade of exceptional care.

Officially opened on Friday 27 March 2015 by Kenneth Clarke MP, now Baron Clarke of Nottingham, the care home marked its milestone on Thursday 27 March 2025 with a party for residents, family and friends and a visit from the current Mayor of Rushcliffe Councillor Andy Brown.

With consistently great reviews from residents and their families and an overall ‘Good’ in all areas rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), The Grand Care Centre has been an integral part of the care framework in West Bridgford and the surrounding areas since it welcomed its first residents a decade ago.

At that time The Grand was the first of its kind; a purpose-built, superbly designed, ‘new generation’ care centre delivering person-centred residential, respite, dementia and 24 hour nursing care along with host of premium features including daily restaurant quality meals from an in-house chef, nail bar, hair salon and library to ensure residents were safe, well cared for and felt perfectly at home.

Each of its 82 en-suite bedrooms is stylish and comfortable, complemented by a choice of beautiful internal and external areas including relaxing lounges, elegant dining rooms and mature landscaped gardens.

Along with the Mayoress, the Mayor enjoyed a tour of the care facility. They also met and chatted to residents and

many of the team. He was delighted to say a few words of congratulations and raise a toast to future good health and longevity before overseeing the start of the afternoon’s entertainment and the cutting of the anniversary cake.

Councillor Andy Brown said: “I am delighted to be here today to help celebrate this milestone. Over the last decade The Grand has cared for a great many local people, delivering wonderful levels of care in these beautiful surroundings. It is testament to the exceptional environment created 10 years ago that many local people in Rushcliffe have been able to stay in the heart of the community that they love while being expertly cared for here at The Grand. It’s been a privilege for us to join you today and I wish you many more years of success in the future.”

To complete the celebrations and provide a fitting and memorable way to mark the milestone, the team at The Grand will once again welcome Lord Kenneth Clarke to the care home for afternoon tea with residents later this month.

Home manager at The Grand Tracy Johnston said: “It’s absolutely wonderful to have the Mayor and Mayoress with us today to celebrate our 10 year milestone, also to welcome Kenneth

Clarke back very soon. The Grand is more than just a care home, it is a warm, thriving and well established community filled with joy and laughter. We’re like a large family, with our care team working hard to ensure residents feel safe and happy and are able to live their lives to the fullest.”

Now part of Lovett Care, The Grand is an expertly designed, state-of-the-art care facility with an exceptional clinical offering delivered by a dedicated and passionate care team.

HOLLYGATE MEMORIAL WOODLANDS

A.M. Buckingham Independent

Family Funeral Services began in Cotgrave in 2008 when owner Tony Buckingham established Cotgrave & District Funeral Services. Since then, they have enjoyed a growing reputation for excellent service and competitive pricing. To enhance their service capacity we have opened branches in Clifton, Carlton and now Bingham, to allow us to serve the wider Nottinghamshire and surrounding areas.

We can arrange all aspects of a funeral and offers each type of service from direct cremation to bespoke funeral services. Each branch is staffed by empathetic and understanding people who will listen to your requirements and help with every aspect of the funeral arrangements. Each branch has a private arranging room and chapel of rest.

We can also offer a dark blue hearse and two matching 7 seat limousines, allowing family members to travel together to the funeral service. Our staff are always on hand to help and advice with all your funeral arrangements.

We solely manage and maintain Hollygate memorial woodlands, situated on Hollygate Lane to the north east of Cotgrave. The woods were planted in 2011 as a conservation woodland to promote the

conservation and reintroduction of birds into this area by planting a variety of native broadleaved species. The planting is naturalistic with open unplanted rides giving access to the 5 separate woods and spinnies. There is an active management scheme in place to help with the establishment of the trees. The company are actively planting more species such as pollen rich plants in the open ride areas to enhance insect life to further encourage all types of bird. Some areas will be left more natural to further help the insects and small animals.

There is a water source at the bottom of the woods, the Grantham canal, which has a large population of amphibious creatures and water based insects to further enhance the wildlife populations. We offer you the opportunity to choose a specific tree and have it as your own growing memorial to the departed loved one. The woods are private but by leasing a tree you also have the right to enter any time and walk or sit in the quiet of the woodlands.

There are many species of trees and shrubs that you can choose as a living memorial for your loved one, including mighty Oaks, flowering Cherry, Ash, Willow, Silver Birch and fruiting Hawthorne or festive Holly. Alternatively, you can choose a family plot where up to 6 cremated remains can be interred around a single tree. We also have supplies of native woodland plants, sourced from sustainable sites, that can be planted around the memorial sites.

Alternatively, we do offer full burial plots if cremation is not an option for you. We can supply coffins, caskets, urns and pouches made from natural and biodegradable materials for the interment of remains, to ensure the woodlands continue to develop into a natural environment.

A BeautifulResti ng Place

Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.

The Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few. Conversely, their ashes can be buried or subsurface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground.

A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush.

Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since opening in 2011, inviting families of the

buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities.

The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending.

The natural burial option is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation. Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment.

Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”
