Attenborough Nature Centre
Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust has recently marked 20 years since Sir David Attenborough opened the iconic Attenborough Nature Centre – regaling the crowd with a story of how he first discovered his family roots in the village of Attenborough
Whilst Sir David’s Leicester roots are well publicised, his family history in the Notts village of Attenborough, from where both the iconic naturalist and campaigner and Attenborough Nature Reserve take their names is less well known.
Whilst officially opening the Nature Centre on March 18th 2005, Sir David – President Emeritus of The Wildlife Trusts – told how, as a young boy on an unsupervised trip to Nottingham by train, he stood to attention as the train guard shouted “Attenborough” – assuming his name was being called. The realisation that the call was for Attenborough Station led to Sir David investigating his roots in Attenborough and Long Eaton.
Sir David’s visit to open the Nature Centre was his second official visit - having previously opened Attenborough Nature Reserve back in 1966. His connection with the cherished reserve and Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust which created the reserve continued with special recordings for an audio trial where he described the site as a ‘lifeline to the natural world’ and support for the charity’s efforts to safeguard the long-term future of the site – which it purchased in 2020 – after six decades of stewardship.
The opening of the Nature Centre in 2005 marked a milestone in the reserve’s history
the realisation of a near 20-year campaign to deliver a centre which would help bring people closer to nature.
Despite challenges including pandemic lockdowns, the cost of living crisis and a serious outbreak of bird flu – since completing the purchase of the reserve in December 2020, thanks in no small part of the backing of Sir David, Trust members and the public, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust has been able to invest in a range of work to benefit wildlife and people at Attenborough Nature Reserve.
Significant new areas of reedbed have been created to benefit a range of species from the sand martins that return from West Africa to breed each spring, to otters which are now regularly spotted at the reserve. Species such as sand martin are also set to benefit from efforts to control non-native mink across the reserve and along the River Erewash. New tern platforms have been installed to provide nesting habitat for common terns when they arrive from Southern Spain and West Africa. New grassland has been created on the site of the former gravel works; Wheatear Field has been enhanced through a new conservation grazing programme and other grassland areas, important for both insects and ground nesting birds, have benefit from improved grazing management or investment in special cutting and mowing machinery.
Corbett’s Meadow, created in memory of inspirational volunteer Keith Corbett, has also been enhanced to benefit a range of butterflies and other beneficial insects. Alongside targeted removal of scrub to protect grassland, scrub adjacent to the Riverside Path Meadow – a stronghold for many warbler species - has been carefully managed to create a diverse structured habitat. Invasive water fern and Japanese knotweed have been eradicated from the reserve and thanks to
around 2000 volunteer hours a year, non-native Himalayan Balsam is much reduced – with 2.4 hectares cleared last year alone.
Alongside work to improve habitats for wildlife, investment to help people connect with and learn about nature has included, ongoing efforts to maintain and improve 9km of access paths including scrub management and grass cutting, new welcome and orientation signage, the creation of a Wilder Welcome programme including well-being walks and new volunteer roles and investment in the nature centre facilities with the creation of an optics demonstration area, the transformation of the nature garden areas in partnership with Beeston Wildlife Group and upgrades to facilities to support a wider range of events and activities.
Speaking about the anniversary, Chief Executive Paul Wilkinson said: "Our vision for the reserve builds on the site’s value to nature and the special place it has in the hearts of so many. As well as having more diverse and abundant wildlife, we’re determined that Attenborough continues to be a place where generations connect with nature and where nature supports people’s wellbeing.”
“For decades, countless people have invested their time and energy to make Attenborough Nature Reserve the unique and special place it is today but going forward, we also want Attenborough to be the place that inspires people to do more for nature – not just here, but in their communities.”
Over the next 12 months, the Trust will host a number of events and activities to help celebrate the Centre’s anniversary as the charity gears up for the 60th anniversary of Attenborough Nature Reserve next year. The Nature Centre will host a three-day Wild Easter Weekend from Saturday 19th April to Monday 21st April.

THE REINDEER
British cuisine at, Nottinghamshire's first Michelin Bib Gourmand pub.
After visiting it’s sister pub The Old Vol nearly a year ago we decided to give The Reindeer a try, it was coming up to Christmas and we wanted a cosy country pub on a dark, drizzly day. We had been assured that the dining room and bar were not quite as ‘Instagrammable’ as the Old Vol.
The outside was decorated in twinkly fairy lights and felt very festive. Inside was a bit of a more restrained affair and as much as I didn’t miss the neon signage and foliage wall it did feel a little ‘cold’. This wasn’t helped by the fact we were sat next to an open fire that hadn’t been lit. If they’re not going to stoke it up on a Friday in December, did that thing ever get lit?
Looking at the menu we pinned our colours to the mast. We were
having 3 courses, but instead of being overwhelmed with options (like at The Old Vol) we were left hoping for a little more. The menu is VERY simple but as the dining room filled up we decided to focus on the good. For starters The Northerner ordered the Korean Chicken and I went for the Mushrooms on toast.
The starters arrived and The Northerner handed me a piece of chicken, it was cooked perfectly with enough crisp and warm, soft chicken to be as much a contrast as the sour and sweet sauce. The micro herbs that topped it were a nice addition but it lacked a little heat, I am really searching for that criticism though. It is as good a crispy chicken as you would find at Bar Iberico.
My mushrooms on toast were the exact ‘taste’ opposite – rich,
I like eating out, trying new restaurants and being on the receiving end of great hospitality. I am a mum with 2 children (one baby, one 9 year old) so I include how the places I visit work for families. I have worked in bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs for most of my life. Good places should be supported, celebrated and shared.
FOOD CRITIC
creamy, earthy and cooked well. The mushrooms still had enough bite that they didn’t turn sloppy and their flavour flooded the mouth with each forkful. The toast wasn’t soggy either, a tremendous start to the meal.
For our main course The Northerner had asked if they could do his Fish and Chips without the skin after being disappointed at The Old Vol, they came back from the kitchen saying they could but it might ‘lose it’s shape’. He gave it a go and when it arrived it might not have had the majesty of a battered fish curled at each end like the little red plastic fortune teller fish you used to get in crackers; but it was easier to eat, and The Northerner was pleased.
My lasagne was small but mighty, the ragu was very rich and the grated cheese on top made it the comforting, warming dish I had been craving. Short of delivering me the Lasagne from Trattoria Antonio’s in 1996 (a massive rectangle of meat and pasta in a sea of volcanic tomato and cheese sauce) they couldn’t have done better. Even after exclaiming i was full I kept picking at the crunchy pasta stuck to the side of the dish until I had to have a word with myself and assure the waiter that ‘yes’ I defintely had finished and they could take it away.
The Apple and Blackberry Crumble finished us off (quite literally as we received a call from nursery as it was delivered saying the toddler needed picking up as she had a temperature). The refined presentation and gentle flavours hit the spot and elevated The Reindeer to one of the best pubs for food in Nottinghamshire. After doing a mental check that we had enough Calpol at home to settle the toddler once we had picked her up we left full and happy.

Creativity, Culture & Community
A brand new arts space dedicated to creativity, culture and community in the heart of Nottingham is now open to the public seven days a week.
Fisher Gate Point is located just a few minutes from Motorpoint Arena and boasts a brand new cafe bar. Following a significant refurbishment, the space has thrown open its doors to welcome the public into its thriving multi-use community hub.
Fisher Gate Point is the brainchild of Tricia and Ian Gardiner, the founding directors, who have realised a long-held ambition to create a welcoming community-led space where Nottingham’s creative grassroots sector can thrive. They first received the keys to the building just before the UK’s first lockdown in 2020. Through sheer determination, a vast creative network, and years of cultural experience, they are now throwing open their doors to the wider public.
Founding director Ian Gardiner said: “We believe in the power of the arts and community to change lives, and we recognised that individual artists, small community groups and grassroots companies delivering hands-on interactive events and workshops needed a space to feel at home.
“We think we have created a positive space for that to happen in Nottingham for now and for future generations. Everyone is welcome here and we all want to collaborate. Come and get involved!”
Over the last five years, Fisher Gate Point has organically grown into a beating heart of Nottingham’s creative sector, providing a home to both emerging and established artists, cultural leaders, and young collectives. Whether attending a live event, participating in a workshop, hiring a space, or simply visiting the café, the venue offers opportunities for people to connect, create and collaborate.
The two-storey multi-use venue has already become home to several key organisations in Nottingham’s creative sector, including Hockley Hustle, Nottingham Poetry Festival, Cherry on Top, Circle of Light, Sugar Stealers, The Actors Workshop, Nottingham CYF, Nottingham Music Hub and HOAM, the city’s first female-led music studio. These groups contribute to a diverse and growing programme of live music, theatre, comedy, immersive performances, DJ courses for women and gender-expansive people, music & wellbeing projects for young people and a men’s mental health project.
It offers a range of flexible hire options for live performances, workshops, rehearsals and co-working, with a downstairs capacity of 110 and an upstairs capacity of 150.
Alongside the event space, the new café and bar will serve as a central gathering point, offering brunch, toasties, jacket potatoes, soups, small plates and one pot wonders (which are daily specials) alongside roasted coffee, teas, craft beers, wines and signature cocktails.
Converting your loft is a practical and rewarding way to create more space in your house. Whether you need an extra bedroom, a home office, a playroom, or simply more storage, a loft conversion can meet your needs while adding value to your property. Here are some steps and considerations to help you make the most of your loft conversion.
Assess Feasibility
Before you start, assess the feasibility of a loft conversion. Check the height, pitch, and structure of your roof. Ideally, you need a minimum head height of 2.2 meters to ensure the space is usable. Consult with a structural engineer to evaluate whether your roof structure can support the conversion.
Plan Your Space
Decide how you want to use the space. This will determine the design and layout. For a bedroom, you'll need space for a bed and storage. For an office, consider desk space and shelving. Sketch out a rough floor plan to visualize the space.
Structural Considerations
Reinforce the floor if necessary. Loft floors may need strengthening to support additional weight. Install appropriate insulation to make the space comfortable year-round. Proper insulation also helps in soundproofing and energy efficiency.
Lighting and Ventilation
Maximize natural light by installing skylights or dormer windows. These also provide ventilation, which is crucial for maintaining air quality. Plan for artificial lighting with a mix of ambient, task, and accent lights to create a welcoming atmosphere.
Access
Ensure safe and practical access to your loft. A staircase is the best option, but it needs to be carefully designed to fit within the existing structure. Spiral staircases or compact designs can save space.
Utilities
Consider the placement of utilities like heating, electricity, and plumbing. You may need to extend existing systems or install new ones. This is crucial if you're adding a bathroom or kitchenette.
Finishing Touches
Choose finishes and furnishings that complement the rest of your home. Use light colours to make the space feel larger and more open. Built-in storage solutions can maximize space and keep the area clutterfree.
Budget
Set a realistic budget and include a contingency for unexpected expenses. Loft conversions can be cost-effective compared to building extensions, but costs can vary depending on the complexity of the project.
Professional Help
Hiring professionals like architects, builders, and interior designers can ensure your loft conversion is done to a high standard. They can provide valuable advice and manage the project efficiently.
By converting your loft, you can effectively increase the living space in your home, making it more functional and enjoyable. Whether you're accommodating a growing family or creating a personal retreat, a loft conversion is a worthwhile investment.

Laura had always had a love of shoes and art but her career took her down a different path. It was only when her husband sadly died that Laura decided was too short and she decided to combine both her passions and launch her own shoe collection. After successfully completing a Footwear Design course it was covid that gave Laura the time to design her shoes and launched her brand in the summer of 2021.
I found myself sketching shoes in my spare time and after applying to LCF and Istituto Marangoni, I was awarded a Scholarship in shoe design. I left my day job and moved to Florence, Italy, to follow my lifelong passion.
I always dreamt of creating a brand that represented my journey. More importantly, a celebration of the vibrancy of life translated into beautiful designs and an array of colour.
I decided to design a small collection of bold, original footwear. I wanted to make any woman feel
fabulous no matter what age, shape or size. I think I’ve poured a bit of artistic magic and a little love into each design, which I hope comes across in the Laura See experience. My designs have always focused on injecting colour and art into shoes –all of the prints are my own original artwork printed onto gorgeous leather - it’s that little detail that makes my shoe designs unique. I want the women who wear them to stand out from the crowd.
My mission is to create beautiful shoes that will make women look and feel special. I invite you to join me on this exciting journey.
THE LAURA SEE WOMAN…
At Laura See London we make luxurious, high quality footwear for fun, fearless and positive women. Women who know who they are and where they’re going. Each pair features a splash of Laura's original artwork, making the shoes unique and adding an extra pop of colour.

FULL STEAM AHEAD!
Visiting a steam railway over the Easter weekend is a unique and immersive experience that takes you back in time to an era of grand locomotives, whistling steam, and the romance of travel. Steam railways hold a special place in the heart of railway enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Stepping onto a preserved steam train is like stepping into a time machine, offering a glimpse of the past while indulging in the charm and history of the golden age of rail travel.
The history of steam trains dates back to the early 19th century, when pioneers like George Stephenson and Isambard Kingdom Brunel revolutionized transport with the invention of the locomotive. In the decades that followed, steam trains became the backbone of the industrial revolution, connecting cities, towns, and people across vast distances. Trains enabled the movement of goods and passengers with an unprecedented speed, and soon, they became symbols of progress and technological marvels.
However, as the 20th century progressed, the steam engine was slowly replaced by diesel and electric locomotives, which were faster, more efficient, and easier to maintain. The days of steam engines seemed numbered, and many of the grand old trains were retired to the scrapyard. But railway preservationists and enthusiasts had a different vision. They worked tirelessly to restore and maintain steam engines, turning them into working museums, with the aim of preserving the rich
history of these remarkable machines for future generations.
Today, many steam railways are open to the public, offering visitors the chance to ride aboard a restored steam engine, often set against picturesque backdrops of rolling hills, rural villages, or historical stations. During Easter, these railways often host special events, such as Easter egg hunts, vintage train rides, and themed excursions, making it a perfect family outing. Visitors can marvel at the sight of the engine’s plumes of smoke rising into the sky, hear the familiar sound of the whistle, and feel the rhythmic chug of the locomotive as it moves down the tracks.
The experience goes beyond just the ride itself. Many steam railways have on-site museums, where you can explore the rich history of the trains and learn about their role in shaping the modern world. Volunteers and historians are often on hand to share fascinating stories about the engines, the people who worked on them, and the impact they had on society.
Easter is a particularly special time to visit, as many of these heritage railways hold events to mark the occasion, with activities for children and families, such as Easter-themed train rides and crafts. You can indulge in the history of the railway, witness the passion of those who work to keep the steam engines alive, and enjoy the timeless appeal of a journey that links past and present in a way few other experiences can.

The Workhouse & Infirmary
Built in 1824 as a last resort for many people, The Workhouse in Southwell is one of the best preserved and most complete in England. As the site developed, the Infirmary was built in 1871. Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist painted a bleak picture of life in the workhouse. However, the focus here is to show that although harsh and monotonous, aspects such as education, medical care or diet may have been better for the poor than in their own homes.
The Workhouse not only tells a powerful and enlightening story of how it provided for the poorest in society but how it was pivotal in the development of our national health and welfare system.
Digital media, personal objects, and the stories of those who lived and worked here help to bring the history of The Workhouse to life. Younger visitors will find plenty of hands-on activities to enjoy like weighing ingredients in the kitchen, writing on slate in the school room, and experiencing the jobs of the paupers, as well as handling items, sitting on the beds, and dressing up.
Open Wednesday – Sunday with additional days in Nottinghamshire school holidays. Full opening times and event details can be found on the website at www.nationaltrust. org.uk/theworkhouse
Mr Straw’s House
Most National Trust properties inspire thoughts of historic mansions, wealth, and grandeur. However, tucked away in a private cul-desac in Worksop, you’ll find Mr Straw’s House, a preserved 1920s period home of a grocer's family, virtually unchanged since the Straws moved there in 1923. A true step back in time, visitors will discover
more about the family who refused to modernise through spending time in the display rooms, hearing nostalgic stories, and seeing thousands of treasured possessions and ordinary domestic items exactly where their owners left them.
Open on Thursdays and Fridays, as well as Saturdays during June & September. Admission is by pre-booked timed self-led tours which can be booked 4 weeks in advance by calling 0344 249 1895, or through the website at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ mrstrawshouse

The park provides the perfect backdrop for exploring, relaxing and spending time together with something for every member of the family to enjoy.

eggbert’s easter egg trail returns
Returning for another year of egg-citement and fun, Sundown Adventureland’s Eggbert’s Easter Egg Trail returns to the theme park for the under 10s from 29th March until 20th April.
The trail asks little explorers to find all the missing eggs that are secretly stashed away all over the attraction in Retford. Take on the search and look for cracking clues at all of Sundown’s play areas and rides from Rocky Mountain Railroad to Market Square and Monkey Mayhem Driving School to Angry Birds Activity Park.

Tractor Ride, Jolly Pirate Boat Ride, Storybook Village and the multiple indoor soft plays are popular with visitors of all ages.

“Our grandparents started Sundown over half a century ago and we love to see different generations of families returning together and commenting that it still has the same whimsical and magical feeling and encourages imagination in little ones.”
The Four Seasons Arena’s large seating area is perfect for picnics and for taking shelter against any April showers, whilst doubling as a meet-and-greet space for Eggbert, who chats to and poses for pictures with families.
To fuel families for a busy day, Sundown has several food and drink outlets across the park, including Pumpkin Patch Cafe and Crash Landings, the ultimate indoor soft play, which serves a selection of refreshments, breakfast rolls, sandwiches and hot lunches.

Derbyshire
After almost 18 months of planning and testing, a sensational new sound and light experience has been added to the list of attractions at the Heights of Abraham this year. Seism!c, is a new sound and light show that visitors encounter when taking a guided tour through the Masson Cavern as part of a day out at the award-winning tourist attraction.
Traditionally, the geological formation of the caverns was explained by a cavern tour guide, but now, thanks to new technology and state-of-the-art projectors, a dramatic and memorable story of key moments in Earth’s history and the formation of the Masson Cavern are being told in a whole new light. Tours through the Masson Cavern are included in the cable car ticket price for a visit to the Heights of Abraham, which is currently open for long weekends (Fridays to Sundays) before opening daily from the 28th March to 2nd November.
Rupert Pugh (Development Director, Heights of Abraham) explains how the challenges of creating a sound and light show underground were eventually overcome: “The formation of the caverns is complex and, over time, we have tried various ways to explain how multiple geological events shaped this impressive underground world. In 2013, we experimented with an AV show in the cavern, but the technology wasn’t up to it, so the guided cavern tour continued in a traditional way. Then, in 2023, we found new, high-powered waterproof projectors and speakers that could provide what we wanted. A plan evolved, research was undertaken, a script written and visual effects created. Our designer, along with technicians and programmers, was involved in producing the AV performance. We’re really very pleased with the final result and think our visitors will find Seism!c a memorable and dramatic addition to a day out at the Heights”.
The designers of the sound and light show realised that for projected images to work
on the cavern walls, they would require very high-powered projectors. Unlike a cinema screen, the rock absorbed light and presented focusing challenges due to the irregular surfaces. A sound and light choreographed piece was uniquely created to work within the cavern environment alongside the knowledgeable cavern tour guides. The show takes place continuously throughout the day.

NATIONAL TRAMWAY MUSEUM TRIUMPHS
CRICH TRAMWAY VILLAGE, THE HOME OF THE NATIONAL TRAMWAY MUSEUM, IS BURSTING WITH EXCITEMENT AS IT PROUDLY ANNOUNCES ITS LATEST ACCOLADE – THE PRESTIGIOUS HERITAGE RAILWAY ASSOCIATION AWARD 2025 FOR DIESEL OR ELECTRIC LOCOMOTION!
The award, presented on Saturday 8th February in Gateshead, celebrates the breathtaking restoration of the magnificent London County Council (LCC) No. 1 tramcar, affectionately known as ‘Bluebird’.
This dazzling Art Deco tramcar, with its sleek lines and elegant design, is a true masterpiece of engineering and historical significance. The restoration project perfectly embodies the Tramway Museum’s mission to “share, inspire, and educate” through the fascinating story of tramways. The momentous award was received by Graham Bennett, CEO of Crich Tramway Village, who was honoured to accept this recognition for the museum’s tireless dedication to preserving the past for future generations.
A LABOUR OF LOVE: RESTORING ‘BLUEBIRD’ TO ITS FORMER GLORY
The restoration of ‘Bluebird’ was made possible by the generous funding of the London County Council Tramways Trust (LCCTT), a registered charity committed to educating the public about the rich history and engineering marvels of tramways. The journey to restore this striking tramcar began in June 2014, when it entered the Conservation Workshop at the National Tramway Museum. Over the following ten years, a passionate team
of engineers, volunteers, and external specialists have meticulously worked to bring ‘Bluebird’ back to life, ensuring every detail remains true to its original design.
Ian Ross, Chair of the LCCTT and dedicated volunteer at Crich Tramway Village, expressed his admiration for the hard work and craftsmanship involved in the project: “First launched in 1932, ‘Bluebird’ was designed to provide an unprecedented level of comfort for passengers and tram crews, rivalling the buses of the time. Although it remained a unique prototype, its legacy lives on through this exquisite restoration. The dedication, patience, and ingenuity of the museum’s team have been truly remarkable, and I am personally in awe of the skills they have demonstrated throughout this project.”
Kate Watts, Curator at Crich Tramway Village, echoed this enthusiasm: “After a decade of meticulous restoration, we are absolutely thrilled to welcome ‘Bluebird’ back into service! This magnificent tramcar, with its Art Deco elegance and timeless charm, will undoubtedly be a highlight for our visitors. We can’t wait for you to step aboard and experience a true piece of history.”
As we prepare to open for the season in just one month’s time (Saturday 15th March 2025), we invite tram enthusiasts, history lovers, and families alike to come and experience the award-winning tramcar in all its glory. Nestled in the stunning countryside of Crich, Derbyshire, the National Tramway Museum is home to the UK’s largest collection of heritage trams, offering a truly unique and immersive experience. Organised and funded by It’s in Nottingham - the city’s Business Improvement District, with support from Nottingham City Council, this year’s celebration of independent, Nottingham-based retailers and creatives will take place in Old Market Square. Expanding onto Smithy Row, this vibrant community event will bring even more independent traders, creating a lively and bustling atmosphere in the heart of Nottingham city centre.
The Ay-Up Market will be open from 11am to 6pm on Friday 28 March, 10am to 6pm on Saturday 29 March and 11am to 5pm on Sunday 30 March. Free and familyfriendly, the market is open to all ages and is an annual highlight in Nottingham’s Old Market Square, bringing residents and visitors together to celebrate the true community spirit of Nottingham.
Last year’s market featured over 60 vendors offering everything from food and drink to arts and crafts, providing a unique platform for independent businesses. This year, the event welcomes more than 80 stallholders, showcasing a diverse selection of products, including freshly baked goods, sweet treats, fine wine and liquors, vintage clothing, plants, skincare, homeware, arts and crafts, handmade jewellery, and pet accessories. All these products will be available from local independent retailers during the three-day event.
Shoppers can discover new businesses like WooSun Choi, JJ Crochets, Knit Nottingham, Lenity Candles, and Molly Designs, alongside returning favourites such as Neurodesigned, Shop Zero, Riviera Iced Tea, HALLO Ceramics, Gee and Gees, and Beeston Brownie.
The main stage, curated by Rastarella from Cultural Vibrations (Unity Through Music), will feature an eclectic mix of folk, indie, gospel, blues, reggae, soul, and global beats. Arts and crafts, led by the team from Positively Empowered Kids, will be free and open to all ages, offering a fun and interactive space for artistic expression.
For even more family-friendly fun, the event will feature hook-a-duck, free face painting, and balloon modelling – ensuring entertainment for everyone! This year, we have introduced a new bead and craft workshop which will be hosted by The Bead Shop - there will be a charge for these pre-bookable activities. Visitors can also indulge in a variety of global cuisines, from Malaysia to Mexico, with delicious offerings from traders like –
• Syiok-Lah (award-winning Malaysian street food)
• Notty BaBa
• Poblano Eatery (Mexican-inspired dishes)

For those with a sweet tooth, Cheeky Pancakes will be serving up indulgent treats, while Blue
Monkey Brewery offers award-winning beers and spirits. Blackbird Coffee will be supplying hot coffee to keep everyone fueled throughout the weekend. Whether you're a foodie, a music lover, or a supporter of local businesses, Ay-Up Market 2025 promises an unforgettable weekend in Nottingham!
Alex Flint, CEO of It’s in Nottingham, said: “This year’s Ay-Up Market is bigger than ever and builds on the success of previous events by offering even more creatives and independent traders an opportunity to showcase their talents. Working together with our partners, the market will once again provide inclusive and accessible experiences for Nottingham’s residents and visitors and bring local people together in Nottingham’s Old Market Square to celebrate the creative and community spirit of Nottingham.”

Offering all sorts of unique products and entertainment, the market is set to be a hit among local residents and visitors from further afield.”
MATT FORDE ADDS MULTIPLE DATES INCLUDING
HOMECOMING SHOW YET TO SELL-OUT THE END OF AN ERA TOUR
Due to phenomenal demand, political comedian and satirist Matt Forde (Spitting Image, HIGNFY, British Scandal) has added 9 extra dates to his biggest (and most acclaimed) tour to date, now running through 14th June 2025. Following sell-out performances in Salford, Chipping Norton, Leeds, Nottingham (two dates), Cambridge, York, Chelmsford, and Faversham, The End of an Era Tour will return to these cities, including Matt’s biggest homecoming show at Nottingham Playhouse on 5th June.
The End Of An Era Tour kicked off on 2nd October last autumn after a month long stint at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where the show was heralded as the best-reviewed out of 1,638 comedy shows by the British Comedy Guide. In addition to his UK tour, Matt has recently returned to the West End stage with his acclaimed Political Party residency and is set to interview heavyweight political guests, Alastair Campbell on 10th March, Anthony Scaramucci on 31st March, Wes Streeting on 12th May, Kemi Badenoch on 9th June and Michael Gove on 14th July.
After enduring what he thought was sciatica during the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Matt was diagnosed with cancer. A few weeks later he was having the base of his spine removed. Since learning to walk again, Matt returned to work on his acclaimed Political Party, British Scandal and Down The Dog podcasts, alongside hosting Absolute Radio’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Football Show. His final challenge was to return to the stage with a new show, lampooning new government’s in the UK and US.
2024 ended with Matt entertaining King Charles with his Donald Trump impression at the Royal Variety Performance, followed by him winning Celebrity Mastermind thanks to him choosing Nottingham Forest as his specialist subject.

Silver Screen at The Arc Cinema
For over three years, The Arc Cinema has proudly hosted Silver Screen, a special Thursday afternoon screening programme designed for film lovers aged 60 and over. What started as a single screening has grown into a thriving weekly event, with some of the year’s most acclaimed films drawing such demand that multiple showings have been required—especially during awards season. This year, BAFTA-winning films such as Conclave and Wicked packed out auditoriums, proving that great cinema knows no age limit. And at just £5 per ticket, including a complimentary hot drink and biscuits, it’s an unbeatable value for a great afternoon out.
As we look ahead to April, May, and June, the Silver Screen programme continues to offer a fantastic mix of films, bringing together cinematic excellence, nostalgia, and cultural celebration. Music lovers can enjoy biopics of legendary musicians, including A Complete Unknown, Better Man, and Maria. Theatre enthusiasts can experience a special live stage production of The Importance of Being Earnest, starring the brilliant Ncuti Gatwa. History buffs are in for a treat too. We’re
marking two significant wartime anniversaries with classic films that deserve to be seen on the big screen. The Dam Busters, celebrating 70 years, will be shown on the eve of the anniversary of the real-life Operation Chastise. This is particularly special for our Hucknall cinema, where composer Eric Coates, who wrote the iconic Dam Busters March, once lived just 200 yards from the venue on Duke Street. And on Thursday, May 8th, we’re commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a special screening of A Royal Night Out, which itself marks 10 years since its release. Expect Union Jack bunting, Victoria Sponge, and a nostalgic cinematic tribute to history.
Cinema for Everyone
At The Arc Cinema, we believe great cinema should be accessible to all. In addition to Silver Screen, we proudly offer Sensory Screenings, designed for those with autism or sensory sensitivities, Subtitled Screenings for the hard of hearing, and our Family Ticket, ensuring excellent value for parents and children alike. Whether it’s a classic film, an awardwinning drama, or a family favourite, there’s something for everyone at The Arc Cinema.
Come join us and be part of our growing Silver Screen community—because cinema isn’t just about watching a film, it’s about sharing an experience.

A Beginner’s Guide to Creating Calm and Balance FENG SHUI YOUR HOME
Ever walked into a room and instantly felt at ease, like everything was exactly where it should be? That’s the power of feng shui at work.
Rooted in ancient Chinese philosophy, feng shui is all about arranging your space to promote balance, harmony, and positive energy flow. Whether you're looking to boost your wellbeing, enhance productivity, or simply to make your home a more peaceful retreat, incorporating feng shui principles can transform your space and mindset.
Use Mindful Colours
Neutrals colours create a safe and grounded space, ideal for the bedroom. Neutrals lend themselves well to natural materials such as rattan, wood and linen, and pair beautifully with brass detailing and warmer details. Pay attention to the undertone, a warm undertone creates a welcoming and comforting place to sleep.
Emma Bestley, Co-Founder and Creative Director of YesColours
In the practice of feng shui, balance is key so installing inconsistent lighting in your bedroom can really affect your mood and the way you feel which in turn affects your quality of sleep. To help improve sleep, we would recommend removing inconsistent and harsh lighting and trying to find ambient light sources which have a low colour temperature.
Different feng shui schools promote different beliefs regarding mirrors in the bedroom - some believe in no mirrors at all, and some believe in just not facing the bed. The reason why you wouldn’t have them facing the bed is based on the fact that mirrors reflect and amplify energy

(negative and positive) so this can affect the quality of your sleep. Alongside this, it can help reflect artificial light in the room which can have a negative influence on relaxation before bed.

Embrace Texture
In the practice of feng Feng Shui perfectly balances a relaxed and minimalist style. The use of texture has become synonymous with this trend, particularly the use of natural finishes, which can easily be incorporated into the home. A soft off-white palette creates a perfect base to build upon and allows the natural light to bounce off the walls for an airy and serene setting.
Tapestry is an easy way to add subtle texture, depth and interest to the walls
while embracing the delicate details of feng shui design. Especially great to the bedroom in replacement of a headboard as it creates a focal point and adds height to the room. It works especially well in rooms to add character and interest when architectural features might be minimal.

Achieving and maintaining radiant skin can be a challenge. Whilst there is a growing trend towards investing in skincare, studies have shown that indoor air quality can also play its part.
Lars Dunberger, Head of Technology for B Corp and the UK’s most awarded air purifier brand, Blueair explains how poor indoor air quality could be affecting your skin and how to combat this.
Extensive skincare routines are becoming increasingly popular, with many choosing to invest in high end treatments. Whilst these can create a barrier for the skin, they don’t correct the issue at hand. A high-performing air purifier will remove pollutants and allergens from the air, some of which can cause skin complaints. Examples of these include eczema, irritations caused by allergies and even microscopic dirt and dust that can lead to blocked pores.
Benefits for your skin
Reduced inflammation and irritation: Clean air reduces the number of allergens and irritants that come into contact with your skin, leading to fewer flare-ups of conditions like eczema and dermatitis.
Improved hydration: Pollutants can strip your skin of essential moisture. By removing these harmful particles from your environment, Blueair purifiers help maintain your skin’s natural hydration, keeping it soft and supple.
Enhanced skin repair
Cleaner air facilitates better sleep, crucial for skin repair and regeneration. A good night’s rest in a pollutant-free environment ensures that your skin can effectively repair itself from daily damage.
Prevention of premature ageing: Free radicals from polluted air are a major contributor to premature ageing. By eliminating these free radicals, Blueair purifiers help preserve your skin’s youthful glow, reducing fine lines and wrinkles.
Simple everyday actions can help to reduce air pollution and keep the air cleaner at home Avoid unnecessary chemicals – use natural cleaning products instead. There are so many fantastic brands available today that are doing the environment and our homes a lot of good.
Cut down on the use of perfume and hair spray, or opt for natural, organic ingredients where possible.
Wash new clothes before use to reduce the amount of chemicals that are released into the air as they cling to the fabric during production.
If you can control the temperature of your bedroom, set it to be 18.3 degrees Celsius, this is the best room temperature for sleep.
Invest in a silk pillowcase or silk eye mask to better pamper your skin

a sound slumber…
Robert Lancaster-Gaye is co-founder of Tielle, the brand behind the bedlinen in some of the world’s most famous five-star hotels, also available in homes. Here, he explains some simple, safe, fool proof techniques to drift off to sleep, without needing to resort to sleepmaxxing.
Robert commented; From taping your mouth shut and potentially overdosing on magnesium, to taking on bloat inducing fizzy drinks before bed – some of the ‘hacks’ we’re seeing as part of the sleepmaxxing trend are at best, a fad, and at worst, dangerous. Whilst it can be incredibly stressful to not be able to get to sleep, the solutions to this common problem are more straightforward than Tik Tok is leading us to believe.
Robert lists three, back-to-basics ways to ensure sound slumber:
The bedroom needs to be cool, dark and quiet
Have a relaxing, warm bath or shower before bed, and go to bed in a cool room. Your body will slowly cool down and this is an inbuilt trigger for sleep. If your room is on a busy road or your partner snores, try ear plugs to get the quiet you need.
Your bed and bedlinen need to be comfortable
Getting into a bed with clean, highquality bedlinen is a pleasure that aids
sleep, but pillows and duvet must be of the right quality and preference. Having the right pillows is incredibly important. Do your research to figure out what’s right for you; soft, medium, hard, synthetic or natural filling. It doesn’t matter if it is different from one side of the bed to the other either, as long as both parties are comfortable.
The duvet must not be too warm either, which can be tricky when sleeping with someone else. Men tend to prefer cooler duvets than women, so for these couples, a tog (warmth) rating between hot and cool could work.
Another solution could be to do what the Swiss do and have two single duvets with different tog ratings on the bed so that each partner sleeps at their desired temperature.

Top Tips To Maintain Your Wood Flooring
Wooden flooring is an investment in both style and longevity, bringing warmth and character to any home. But to keep it looking its best, regular care and maintenance are key.
Natalie Mudd, Creative Director & Co-Founder of Knot & Grain, shares her expert advice on preserving the beauty and durability of your wooden floors. From simple daily habits to long-term protection, discover the best ways to keep your floors looking pristine for years to come.
How should I best protect my new wooden floor?
It’s important to keep your floors free of debris that could scratch or damage them. Be sure to sweep or vacuum regularly, paying extra attention to areas near the doorways where dirt and leaves
How can I get a deep clean my floor?
For tougher stains and spills, use a slightly damp mop to clean the floors thoroughly. Make sure to wring out excess water as too much moisture can damage the wood. You can also use a specialised
tend to gather. It might be the perfect time to swap out that tired looking door mat, so everyone has a place to wipe their feet.
Protect your floors further from furniture scratches by investing in felt pads for all your furniture legs. It’s especially important as we welcome guests into our home and often find furniture is rearranged to accommodate those visitors.
It can also damage the surface finish of the board, which will impact the look and feel of the entire space.
Lastly, why is engineered wood flooring more superior than solid wood?
Engineered wood flooring has a long list of benefits, it’s easy to understand why. For starters, engineered wood is made up of various layers, which is what makes it far more durable and stable than a traditional solid wood floor. It is also far more sustainable, since it utilises a lot less of the tree per plank than a solid wood floor.
cleaner such as those available through our store which are especially formulated to clean your floor without leaving it too wet.
Are home-made cleaning solutions advisable?
While natural remedies can be effective on hardwood flooring, we suggest proceeding with caution when using them on hard flooring to prevent potential damage. If you choose to try a diluted solution, always test it first on a small, inconspicuous area and ensure no residue is left behind. Whenever possible, we recommend prioritising dry cleaning methods - such as regular sweeping and vacuumingalongside professional oil and cleaning solutions specifically designed for your flooring.
Are steam cleaners safe to use?
Steam cleaners are not advised for use on engineered wood floors. The moisture created by the steam cleaner and the change in temperature can have a huge impact on the planks, in some cases leading to discolouration and warping.
The top layer of an engineered wood floor is made up entirely of solid wood, which is bonded to a layer of incredibly strong pine or plywood beneath, and a stabilising counter layer. This layered design balances out the tensions in the wood and in turn prevents the wood from bending or swelling in areas of changing moisture. Coupled with a click-lock connection, engineered wood flooring is easy to install and provides superb durability that will withstand everyday modern life.

Get Your Car Ready For Spring
As spring approaches and the promise of road trips and vacations beckons, ensuring your car is ready for the journey is essential. A well-prepared vehicle not only enhances safety but also prevents unexpected breakdowns, allowing you to enjoy your travels worry-free. Here are key steps to get your car ready for the warmer weather.
Comprehensive Service Check: Schedule a full service with a trusted mechanic. This should include an oil change, filter replacements, and a thorough inspection of your car’s engine, brakes, and transmission. Regular maintenance keeps your car running smoothly and efficiently.
Air Conditioning System: A functioning air conditioning system is crucial for comfort during long drives. Have your AC checked for any leaks and ensure it's fully charged with refrigerant. Clean or replace the cabin air filter to ensure optimal air quality inside the car.
Tyre Inspection: Examine your tyres for wear and tear. Ensure they are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure, as incorrect tire pressure can affect handling and fuel efficiency. Don’t forget to check the spare tyre and ensure you have a complete tire-changing kit.
Fluid Levels: Top up all essential fluids, including coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Coolant is particularly important when it starts warming up outside, as it prevents the engine from overheating.
Battery Check: Check for any corrosion on the terminals and ensure the battery is securely mounted. If your battery is more than three years old, consider having it tested to ensure it can hold a charge.
Wiper Blades and Lights: Replace worn wiper blades to ensure clear visibility during
April showers. Test all lights, including headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and interior lights, to ensure they are functioning correctly. Prepare or update your emergency kit. Include items such as a firstaid kit, flashlight, jumper cables, basic tools, and extra water.
By following these steps, you can ensure your car is in top condition for spring travel, providing peace of mind and allowing you to focus on enjoying your journey.
Grandparents – Your Rights
To See Your Grandchildren
There is often an assumption that grandparents have automatic rights to see their grandchildren, unfortunately, this is not the case. The law does not give grandparents (Maternal or Paternal) any automatic rights to be in their grandchild’s lives. This means that if parents choose to keep their children away from grandparents, they are free to do so. Emma Stamp discusses what you can do if you find yourself in this situation.
Contact arrangements
Despite not having automatic rights, grandparents still have options available to them. The first and usually the most effective is to try resolving all issues between the adults, whether it is directly or via the mediation process, the latter must be undertaken in any event if issues cannot be resolved, and you are compelled to consider an application to Court. The situation can vary from case to case. It may be that the relationship between the adults has broken down or it may be that you as grandparents are concerned for the children, and in an attempt to intervene you are denied any further time with the child.
If you are compelled to seek legal advice, then you will always be asked whether you have attempted to speak with the parents of the child to try and resolve the issues and further consideration will be applied as to whether correspondence from solicitors may assist to resolve the issues amicably.
Mediation
If an agreement cannot be reached and a referral to mediation has not yet been made, this will be the next step. Mediation is not only a better option to try and resolve the issues but also far more cost-effective than making an application to Court. You will need to attend a MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting), this is compulsory. There are exemptions available for example if your grandchild is at significant risk of harm, but in most cases, the Court will expect you to attempt to resolve issues in mediation.
Application to Court
If mediation is considered inappropriate, breaks down, or is refused by the other party then the only available option to
you is making a formal application to Court to resolve the child arrangements. This is the last option we advise, however, this may be the only available option if all else has failed. As you hold no parental responsibility as a grandparent, you will need to first ask the Court for permission before being able to make an application for a Child Arrangements Order. If the Court grants you permission, then you can proceed with a formal application for a Child Arrangements Order, if however, the Court does not grant permission then you will not be able to proceed further.
Like all applications, the Court will consider each matter individually but must take into account the following:
1.The nature of the application
2.The applicant’s connection with the child
3.Any risk of the proposed application disrupting the child’s life to the extent that they would be harmed by it.
If Court is the only option you feel is available then we highly recommend that you seek independent legal advice regarding your position and next steps.
Malcolm and his wife Pat have decided to leave a gift to Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance in their Wills so that the charity can continue to save lives in the future.
“Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance is extremely important to agricultural workers, the helicopter a welcome sight as it appears like a yellow knight in shining armour flying across the fields to help a farmer in distress. This is why I am leaving a gift in my Will to LNAA”
Malcolm Haywood comes from a farming family, ever since the 1700s his family on his mother’s side has been involved in arable farming. And over the years Mike can recall many instances of farmworkers being injured in agricultural accidents and needing the support of the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA).
He says: “One time, a farmer friend of mine got caught in a potato machine. But the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance
got there just in time, treated him at the farm and transported him to hospital. It could have been such a different outcome had it not been for the LNAA”
Incidents like that are why Malcolm
believes so strongly in the importance of LNAA and being able to fly to those isolated farms swiftly and tend to the most horrific of farming injuries, to save precious time and then get people quickly to the hospital.

The heat is on. You are under extreme pressure and working to a deadline. You fear failure and to be ill thought of, hence you will work around the clock to complete your mission. Someone close to you is not showing an ounce of understanding and as always, behaving selfishly. What’s new? Why haven’t you learned that you cannot change another person, on take responsibility for your own actions.
aries
A passionate encounter with someone you either work with or know in a casual sense, could lead to big trouble, as emotions have a funny way of getting involved and complicating things. You thrive on excitement and intrigue. 'Boring' does not suit you at all. Excellent news regarding finances will enable you to splash out and be outrageously generous. Watch your back at work, someone is eyeing you enviously.
cancer
Your list of priorities have changed enormously recently and what once seemed important no longer matters as much. You are beginning to realise how important time is and determined not to waste anymore on people or activities that don’t benefit you in the slightest. You may choose to put distance between yourself and someone you have lost respect for. A job interview will go amazingly well. Prepare yourself for some much welcomed, yet long over due, positive changes.
Suddenly your finances will begin to show signs of recovery enabling you to act and feel more positive. You will have good reason to be suspicious of someone you know well, who is stringing you along by telling you lies. A confrontation is imminent and although you would prefer to sort matters out sensibly, this may not be possible. A house move could also be on the cards soon enabling you to look ahead to a bright new future.
A close relationship is nearing its end. No matter how hard you have tried to be fair and reasonable, you are talking to a brick wall. Rather than break your heart and lose sleep over this situation, do yourself a favour and walk away. A chance meeting with someone new will inject a new sense of excitement into your veins, giving you hope that there is something far better coming your way soon. You are right....there is!!
taurus
The dynamics of a relationship is changing. It's either losing momentum and growing stale or hotting up into a manic like passion. Either way you feel out of control. Nothing is making any sense and you don’t know where you stand. No one can say or do anything to calm your nerves. A last minute decision to go on holiday will come as an enormous surprise to someone who thought they had you in the palm of their hand. Obviously they don’t and you are refusing to play the game their way.
You are turning an important corner in your career and business life. Personal matters will be foremost in your mind yet there is nothing you can do nor say that will alter a certain situation. Do not make the mistake of believing everything that goes wrong must be your fault. Have confidence in your decision making and stick to your principals. Accept a social invitation as it will do you the world of good to get away from the office and piles of paperwork.
There is no escaping the matter, whatever you decide to do next or which ever direction you feel compelled to walk in, the experience is going to take a lot of effort and possibly cost a huge amount of money. You may still be dithering whether or not to contact an old friend or lover with a view to meeting up....but something is stopping you. Could it be that your guardian angels are telling you to stop dwelling on the past and get a grip?
Even though you are exhausted from working long hours and not getting your quota of sleep, this does not deter you from reaching your goal. You are like a mad person on a mission. Time is of the essence if you are to succeed in a project close to your heart. Elderly relatives prove trying and demanding. Younger ones expect you to be an unpaid taxi service and use your home as a hotel. You are about to make lots of changes they wont like, but it will suit you much better.
virgo
Inexplicable occurrences and events have left you wondering what on earth can go wrong next? You are beginning to see the bigger picture and the reality of certain people’s behaviour. Your obvious growing concern for a loved one will be justified, but they are too stubborn to listen to good advice and reason? You may be wasting your breath, so focus on putting your own matters in order and make a point of going out with friends to enjoy some fun together.
If you are in the process of getting back into the single’s market you may find it a bit of a minefield. Take heart, you will meet some wonderful individuals who may only become friends, but there again, are you sure that you want any more than that right now? A legal matter that has been dragging along will resolve itself soon, enabling you to start planning ahead. Book a holiday. Take advantage of all the late bargains that are on offer tailored to suit your requirements.
Your closest friends are hand picked. You are happy to help them out at a moments notice because you know they are also available when you need assistance. If self employed you will notice a financial upturn. A romantic time spent with your partner will lead to a better understanding. Some of you may seriously consider renewing your marriage vows. If your home is in need of renovation or redecorating, set a long weekend aside to get it done once and for all.

HOLLYGATE MEMORIAL WOODLANDS
A.M. Buckingham Independent
Family Funeral Services began in Cotgrave in 2008 when owner Tony Buckingham established Cotgrave & District Funeral Services. Since then, they have enjoyed a growing reputation for excellent service and competitive pricing. To enhance their service capacity we have opened branches in Clifton, Carlton and now Bingham, to allow us to serve the wider Nottinghamshire and surrounding areas.
We can arrange all aspects of a funeral and offers each type of service from direct cremation to bespoke funeral services. Each branch is staffed by empathetic and understanding people who will listen to your requirements and help with every aspect of the funeral arrangements. Each branch has a private arranging room and chapel of rest.
We can also offer a dark blue hearse and two matching 7 seat limousines, allowing family members to travel together to the funeral service. Our staff are always on hand to help and advice with all your funeral arrangements.
We solely manage and maintain Hollygate memorial woodlands, situated on Hollygate Lane to the north east of Cotgrave. The woods were planted in 2011 as a conservation woodland to promote the
conservation and reintroduction of birds into this area by planting a variety of native broadleaved species. The planting is naturalistic with open unplanted rides giving access to the 5 separate woods and spinnies. There is an active management scheme in place to help with the establishment of the trees. The company are actively planting more species such as pollen rich plants in the open ride areas to enhance insect life to further encourage all types of bird. Some areas will be left more natural to further help the insects and small animals.
There is a water source at the bottom of the woods, the Grantham canal, which has a large population of amphibious creatures and water based insects to further enhance the wildlife populations. We offer you the opportunity to choose a specific tree and have it as your own growing memorial to the departed loved one. The woods are private but by leasing a tree you also have the right to enter any time and walk or sit in the quiet of the woodlands.
There are many species of trees and shrubs that you can choose as a living memorial for your loved one, including mighty Oaks, flowering Cherry, Ash, Willow, Silver Birch and fruiting Hawthorne or festive Holly. Alternatively, you can choose a family plot where up to 6 cremated remains can be interred around a single tree. We also have supplies of native woodland plants, sourced from sustainable sites, that can be planted around the memorial sites.
Alternatively, we do offer full burial plots if cremation is not an option for you. We can supply coffins, caskets, urns and pouches made from natural and biodegradable materials for the interment of remains, to ensure the woodlands continue to develop into a natural environment.

The MBU is based at Hopewood, Nottingham. We are a regional unit for the East Midlands, however, as a national resource we can accept admissions from other areas of England if needed.
These complimentary therapies are scientifically proven to reduce stress and promote relaxation - critical for both patient recovery and the dedicated healthcare staff caring for them.
The team aim to provide rapid and effective care for the mother's mental illness whilst promoting the mother and baby relationship. We use the best approach to meet each woman's needs and wishes to help them with a speedy recovery. Not only have these complimentary therapies been well received by patients, but considered very valuable in their recovery journey.
One psychotic patient described how she had five people / voices in her head and when she had the head
massage the voice just became hers again, and the other four disappeared. She felt this was a real turning point in her psychosis.
Another psychotic patient finally fell asleep after psychotic episodes all day in her bed having a hand massage, while a nurse held her other hand. Many describe a sense of peace in their minds that they haven’t felt for a long time.
Another patient managed to relax after having a severe panic attack, without the use of medication. Patients with severe insomnia often manage to fall asleep during the treatment.
Debbie Sells, Ward Manager said: “The treatments are hugely beneficial, I’ve seen first-hand what a big difference they make to our patients. We’d really love to be able to continue offering these therapies, but we need your help. We know our patients and colleagues would be extremely grateful for any contribution.”
For the past two years they have been funded by people like yourselves. They are currently being delivered by Vanessa at Shine Wellbeing - reflexology and head massage offer a natural soothing way to help with the anxiety, fatigue, and stress, to aid timely and effective recovery.
Without your generosity it is likely that these therapies will not be financially viable to continue.

English Channel swim for charity
A dedicated social worker from Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is gearing up for an extraordinary challenge to raise funds for a cause close to her heart.
Vikki Chester, a Senior Forensic Social Worker at Rampton Hospital, will be joining her friends Juliette Lewis and Gemma Summerfield in swimming the English Channel between 1 and 10 July 2025. Their attempt will take place within the designated 'tide window' under the guidance of their pilot boat captain, who will give them just 12 to 24 hours' notice before they dive into the open water.
"It’s going to be an incredible test of endurance, grit, and determination, and we’re feeling a mix of excitement and nerves as the big day gets closer," said Vikki.
The trio has been training intensively for months, balancing early morning pool sessions, open water swims, and rigorous drills to prepare for the unpredictable conditions of the Channel. Alongside the challenge of swimming in cold and choppy waters, they will also be facing the presence of jellyfish and even some of the 21 species of sharks that call the Channel home. Each swimmer is raising funds for a different charity. Vikki is fundraising to create a low-stimulus sensory room for patients with Personality Disorder and Neurodevelopmental conditions at Rampton Hospital.
“Many patients with personality disorders have experienced significant childhood trauma, and those with neurodevelopmental conditions often struggle with coping strategies,” Vikki explained. “Managing emotions
is an essential part of recovery, and for some, a quiet, low-stimulus environment is crucial. Currently, this type of space is not available on the wards, and since patients cannot leave the grounds, we want to create a specialist, comfortable environment to support them.”
Her teammate Gemma is fundraising for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, a vital service providing life-saving emergency care across the region. The challenge is expected to push the team to their limits, but their determination to make a difference is unwavering.
Becky Sutton, Chief Operating Officer at Notts Healthcare said, "Vikki’s dedication to this challenge is truly inspiring. Taking on the English Channel is no small feat, but what stands out even more is her commitment to making a tangible difference for our patients. Her fundraising efforts for a low-stimulus sensory room highlight the importance of creating environments that genuinely support recovery and well-being. We’re proud to have staff like Vikki, who go above and beyond to support those in our care, and we wish her and the team every success in this remarkable endeavour."
To support Vikki in her mission to improve patient well-being, donations can be made via their Just Giving page. The charity extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributes to our mission. The continued support directly impacts the lives of our patients, their families, visitors and our colleagues. To sustain this important work, we depend on the ongoing generosity of individuals and companies.

Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.
The Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few. Conversely, their ashes can be buried or subsurface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground.
A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush.
Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since opening in 2011, inviting families of the
buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities.
The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending.
The natural burial option is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation. Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment.
Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”
