Nominated for Major Festival of the Year, alongside Reading and Leeds, Latitude, Isle of Wight and Victorious after the last event in 2023, the festival continues to provide an affordable experience for families with free entry for children under 11, and is the only festival of this scale to offer a discounted youth ticket for teenagers.

coming to enjoy the weekend with us.”
The return of Splendour from a year out is set to provide a welcome boost to the local economy as it attracts tens of thousands of visitors to the city over the weekend. This year, organisers are building on the growing appeal of weekend festival getaways with the introduction of an accommodation partner next to the festival site. Dedicated festival coaches will also be running from major cities and towns across the Midlands to complement Nottingham’s well-connected rail network and amplify the festival’s regional appeal. Cllr Sam Lux, Executive Member for Carbon Reduction,

entertainment, Splendour is the ideal way to introduce younger family members to the joys of live music and the full festival experience. As is befitting for its hotly anticipated return, Splendour is featuring not one but two headliners celebrating the 20th anniversaries of their era-defining albums.
On Saturday, Bloc Party will be performing songs from their debut album ‘Silent Alarm’ alongside a selection of greatest hits. Led by impassioned frontman Kele Okereke, the band’s initial EPs played a pivotal role in shaping British indie rock for years to come. By the time they released their groundbreaking debut album in 2005, their experimentation with electronic textures in their musical style cemented them as trailblazers.
On Sunday, Kaiser Chiefs will be playing a set celebrating their iconic debut album ‘Employment’. The release of ‘I Predict A Riot’ was the start of something really special and the album that followed has soundtracked the lives of millions since. Formed in Leeds in 2000, Kaiser Chiefs are one of the leading bands of their generation. The band have had a string of anthemic hits such as ‘Oh My God’, ‘Everyday I Love You Less and Less’, ‘Never Miss A Beat’ and ‘Ruby’.
Multi-platinum and BRIT award winning
by topping the bill in 2013. Having sold out his last big hometown show at Motorpoint Arena, it’s a chance to catch up with the city’s troubadour and his mix of bluesy, indie folk with a dash of working-class swagger.
The Grammy-award winning music of Clean Bandit is immediately recognisable with its blend of strings and electronic elements. The trio of classically trained cellist Grace Chatto and brothers Jack and Luke Patterson have seen their huge tracks 'Symphony’, ‘Rockabye’, ‘Solo’ and ‘Rather Be’ amass more than a billion Spotify streams each. Last year’s smash ‘Cry Baby’, created alongside Anne-Marie and David Guetta marks a welcome return for this distinctive band.
The popular daytime clubbing experience Day Fever launched by Vicky McClure will be playing plenty of familiar tracks on both days before it hands over the brand new stage to electronic sounds to close out each evening. Post punks Echo & The Bunnymen; blues icon Seasick Steve; ‘Unwritten’ singer Natasha Bedingfield; pop idol Sophie EllisBextor; folk-punk band The Levellers; Scottish rock band The Fratellis and Elvana, the Elvis fronted Nirvana feature in this first reveal.

lessons in local history
An air raid shelter which was closed and forgotten for decades has been fully restored to allow schoolchildren and history enthusiasts to experience what it was like to take shelter from bombs during World War II.
A two-year partnership between Nottingham Trent University (NTU) and Rushcliffe Borough Council has brought the Abbey Circus Air Raid Shelter, in West Bridgford, back to life for schools and the community to experience.
Officially opened on 13th February, the shelter, in Abbey Circus, has been fully restored with a £40,000 grant from the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund, matched with funding from Rushcliffe Borough Council and NTU.
The project aims to allow primary schoolchildren to learn about local history, the experience of World War II in West Bridgford and the history of air raid shelters.
Children, who will visit the shelter as part of a broader study day, will also get the opportunity to discover a collection of artefacts related to World War II, and even enjoy air raid warden training as part of role play activities on the site.
The historic structure has been secured internally and externally, with access and ventilation improved. Wooden benches have been created and installed throughout, featuring brackets which were salvaged from the original furniture. LED lighting has been fitted beneath the benches for improved visibility, and a pop-up screen has been installed for educational films to illustrate the history of the shelter.
The creative content for the project, including an animated film, an activity leaflet, and the signage, was designed and delivered by illustration students from the Nottingham School of Art & Design at NTU, who used colours and fonts commonly seen during WWII to give a nostalgic feel.
Professor Chris Reynolds, a professor of Contemporary European History and Memory Studies at NTU’s School of Arts and Humanities, who led the project, said: “The successful redevelopment of the Abbey Circus Air-Raid Shelter provides an invaluable educational resource for schools to explore the local experience of World War II.
“It brings to life an abandoned structure that many local families and children walk past every day without realising its historical significance and value.By transforming the shelter into an educational space, we aim to give the site a renewed purpose of bringing our local history to life and
enthusing our young people about the history on their doorsteps.
“This project continues an important strand of my broader research that aims to establish potent connections and opportunities between the study of the past and education. Bringing history to life for young people helps demonstrate the importance of the study of the past and can inspire historians of the future.
“This project is a fine example of how NTU research and teaching can have an impact in the local community.
“Projects such as this demonstrate the link between our research and how it is important and invaluable for the preservation and exploration of our local heritage.”
Councillor Abby Brennan, Rushcliffe Borough Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Business and Growth, said: “This is an exciting restoration project that will tell us more about how this historic community air raid shelter was used during World War II. It’s fantastic to see its transformation which is bringing an important part of West Bridgford’s and Rushcliffe’s history to life.
“We’ve supported this project through our UK Shared Prosperity Fund and provided match funding to help redevelop the site and preserve the rich history it holds.
“We’re looking forward to seeing the site fully open for local school children, residents and visitors where they can learn more about the wartime air raid shelter through new signage, educational activities and videos.
More support for families in Nottinghamshire
Nottinghamshire’s Family Hubs are transforming the way services for families are delivered across the county. Since the county’s first family hub was launched in 2024, more family hub networks have been rolled out, offering support from pregnancy to a child's 18th birthday. With 10 of the 18 Family Hub Networks already in place, the rollout is moving at pace and is on track to complete by the end of March 2025.
To celebrate opening each family hub networks, families and professionals have been taking part in the official launch events to find out about help and support available in each location.
Councillor Tracey Taylor, Cabinet Member for Children and Families, said: “Delivering new family hubs for parents in Nottinghamshire is important so that they can get help and support when they need it. Through the many launch events, I have seen families and professionals coming together, talking to each other and enjoying some wonderful fun activities. At the same time, parents and carers have been able to learn more about the variety of support available from their local network.
“With a range of partners including health and voluntary sector working together, I am confident that children and families in Nottinghamshire will increasingly receive the right support at the right time”.
More than 1,000 parents and carers have been involved in creating and developing Family Hub Networks in Nottinghamshire in the past 12 months.
Nottinghamshire’s children’s centres have now become Family Hubs and instead of working with families with young children only, families will be able to ask for help and support regardless of the age of their children. Provision will continue to include services and activities from pregnancy to four-years-old e.g. midwifery and breastfeeding support and will soon be offering services for families who need extra help with things like behaviour, special educational needs and disabilities, and more. Services will be provided by the council and others including the NHS and local charities.
Ivy attends Retford Family Hub with her parents, and her dad said: “It is brilliant to be fair, nice variety of activities, Ivy has loved it and taken part in
everything. I would recommend thisto other families.”
Activities will take place in dedicated Family Hub buildings, community venues and online. All the organisations are passionate about supporting children, young people and families and staff are committed to ensuring that children and families receive the best support possible wherever they are in the county.
One of the grandparents who uses the services on offer with her granddaughters said: “We love coming here, we look forward to it every Wednesday, it has been great. It is all so safe and structured, a happy environment, everybody is friends here, it is just a nice place.”
Family hubs also bring together multiple partners including, Inspire Libraries – an arms-length cultural organisation which manages cultural services on behalf of the county council.
Jill Barr is one of the District Library Managers and attended the launch of Rushcliffe Family Hub.
She said: “this was a fantastic opportunity to broaden my knowledge and network with local partners.
“Helping us to continue to strengthen our collaboration opportunities and ensure a good understanding of the support available in our communities so we can also actively signpost our library customers and spread awareness of council and local support services.”

“There was no issue with arranging pick up times as the hospital liaises directly with the driver. I didn’t have to worry about when he would be available to take me home either and could stay in hospital as long as I needed to. It all worked perfectly. BAR IBERICO
A relaxed all day tapas bar on Carlton Street in Hockley, Nottingham!
Someone asked me recently about all the restaurants opening in Nottingham with a question about the impact on the older restaurants that don’t have the buzz of ‘new’. I made a mental note to make sure my money supports those I have loved for years and while in town on my own I decided to go back to Bar Iberico. I have been here many times and remember my initial annoyance when it opened that you couldn’t book a table – when places are new ‘no booking’ spikes my anxiety that I will be waiting for an age or be turned away. Bar Iberico have single handedly done the job of changing my opinion to this approach. I have never waited more than 10 minutes for a table there regardless of day/time of visit.
The restaurant feels like it can accomodate everything from a very formal celebration
(especially downstairs), to a couple seeking a dessert or someone wanting a quick beer. I have been all of these customers over the years but this time I thought I would take advantage of their Menu Rapido (£16.95 for three dishes). The popularity of the restaurant certainly hasn’t dimmed and even at 14:45 on a Friday more than half the tables were full.
I ordered Catalan Tomato Bread, the server stopped me to warn that it wasn’t included on the Menu Rapido and I had a mental tug of war between my wallet and my stomach. My stomach won, I also ordered the Spanish tortilla, Pork belly pinchos and now I wasn’t limited to 3 dishes decided I could drop the pointless act that I wasn’t going to order Crispy Chicken. On ordering the Tortilla the server told me they serve it with a runny middle (as it is authentically served in Spain) and
I like eating out, trying new restaurants and being on the receiving end of great hospitality. I am a mum with 2 children (one baby, one 9 year old) so I include how the places I visit work for families. I have worked in bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs for most of my life. Good places should be supported, celebrated and shared.
was I ok with that, I said ‘No problem’ and reflected these little questions help reduce any nasty surprises for the kitchen, servers and customers.
The Crispy chicken arrived first and I marvelled at how a dish could be so succesful, for so long (the restaurant once ran an April Fool on their socials saying it was being taken off the menu). It is easy to understand why, and why there are lots of ‘homages’ around the city when you taste it. The sauce manages to balance rich, heat, bitter, sweet and light, enrobing the crispy chicken pieces enough to soften the coating a little but not make it soggy. I was thinking ‘This will be the dish of the meal, everything else will pale in comparison’ and then the tortilla arrived.
I was expecting a slice of tortilla but a very generous round of egg, potato and onion arrived, topped with allioli, lemon and chives. The outside had the tell tale bubbles of something that has been cooked slowly in butter, the middle was warm, unctious, simple and made me sigh. I realised after seeing it I had over ordered and would be taking some home and the tortilla was the dish I most looked forward to eating again later – even while it was still sat in front of me. Ah well I should
have stopped there, the pork belly and bread would probably fall short.
As I started the pork belly I lamented that it was too close to the sticky chicken sauce, I should have just gone for three dishes. As I had my second mouthful I realised they may share a base flavour but the chipotle and honey added more sweet and heat without the acid, the fennel piled on top of it rounded off the sweetness with fresh aniseed. All the pork on the skewer was soft, slow cooked and without flacid fat or sinew that can ruin pork belly. The tomato bread was a mouthful
of charred sourdough, vibrant tomato, really tasty oil and herbs, it missed a tiny bit of salt but at this point I am searching for fault. All 4 dishes were far better than most of the ‘best’ dishes I have eaten recently. The lunch was astoundingly good.
FAMILY – Bar Iberico is a great place to go with kids and babies, they have accomodated me before with a large bassinet and there is a disabled toilet on the same floor for nappy changes. Although there isn’t a specific kids menu the flatbreads in particular are a great option for children.

Maple or golden syrup is always a good option, staying safe with a dollop of ice cream perfectly complements the sugary concoction for a delightful treat. Lemon and sugar is another zesty favourite with many people enjoying the sweet and sour contrast drizzled on their pancakes.
Savour the Moment
If you’re swapping your hearty dinner for a stack of pancakes, opt for a savoury option to adorn your family dinner table. Roasted peppers and goat’s cheese is a trendy, delicious combination which will appeal to even the fussiest of eaters. Make sure the cheese is melted and serve alongside green salad and caramelised onion chutney.
Opt for something unique and create vegetable fajitas using your leftover veg, seasoned with succulent spices and served with pancake wraps – tasty and cost-effective.
Bacon is fantastic on everything and pancakes are no different, crispy bacon adds a savoury twist to your pancake plate. Try maple syrup with bacon for an American style flavour sensation.
Let’s Get Fruity
Sweet, juicy and, most importantly, healthy, fruit is the perfect partner for your Shrove Tuesday feast. From citrus fruits to classic combinations – get fruity with your pancakes for a little taste of luxury.
Berries are delicious, and whether strawberries are your favourite or you prefer to opt for blackberries, raspberries or blueberries, pair them with cream, ice cream or by themselves for a light yet flavoursome option.
You can’t go wrong with bananas, and while some people enjoy their bananas alongside strawberries and a sprinkle of cocoa powder; others opt for a nice generous lashing of nutella.
Whet your appetite with this delicious

HOW DO YOU EAT YOURS?
Making More Room
Converting your loft is a practical and rewarding way to create more space in your house. Whether you need an extra bedroom, a home office, a playroom, or simply more storage, a loft conversion can meet your needs while adding value to your property. Here are some steps and considerations to help you make the most of your loft conversion.
Assess Feasibility
Before you start, assess the feasibility of a loft conversion. Check the height, pitch, and structure of your roof. Ideally, you need a minimum head height of 2.2 meters to ensure the space is usable. Consult with a structural engineer to evaluate whether your roof structure can support the conversion.
Plan Your Space
Decide how you want to use the space. This will determine the design and layout. For a bedroom, you'll need space for a bed and storage. For an office, consider desk space and shelving. Sketch out a rough floor plan to visualize the space.
Structural Considerations
Reinforce the floor if necessary. Loft floors may need strengthening to support additional weight. Install appropriate insulation to make the space comfortable year-round. Proper insulation also helps in soundproofing and energy efficiency.
Lighting and Ventilation
Maximize natural light by installing skylights or dormer windows. These also provide ventilation, which is crucial for maintaining air quality. Plan for artificial lighting with a mix of ambient, task, and accent lights to create a welcoming atmosphere.
Access
Ensure safe and practical access to your loft. A staircase is the best option, but it needs to be carefully designed to fit within the existing structure. Spiral staircases or compact designs can save space.
Utilities
Consider the placement of utilities like heating, electricity, and plumbing. You may need to extend existing systems or install new ones. This is crucial if you're adding a bathroom or kitchenette.
Finishing Touches
Choose finishes and furnishings that complement the rest of your home. Use light colours to make the space feel larger and more open. Built-in storage solutions can maximize space and keep the area clutterfree.
Budget
Set a realistic budget and include a contingency for unexpected expenses. Loft conversions can be cost-effective compared to building extensions, but costs can vary depending on the complexity of the project.
Professional Help
Hiring professionals like architects, builders, and interior designers can ensure your loft conversion is done to a high standard. They can provide valuable advice and manage the project efficiently.
By converting your loft, you can effectively increase the living space in your home, making it more functional and enjoyable. Whether you're accommodating a growing family or creating a personal retreat, a loft conversion is a worthwhile investment.

Threads through the Bible
Southwell Minster is delighted to be just the second place in the world to host the artistic masterpiece that is Threads through the Bible, by extraordinary textile artist Jacqui Parkinson.
Threads through the Bible is made up of three huge sequences, ‘Threads through Creation’, ’Threads through the Cross’ and ‘Threads through Revelation’ to create one incredible display of textile art.
Through an inspiring journey across the 44 huge panels, Jacqui guides the viewer from the first pages of the Bible in Threads through Creation, through key moments in Jesus’ life, death and resurrection in Threads through the Cross, to the extraordinary visions of the last book in the Bible, in Threads through Revelation. This unique and celebratory exhibition offers a
transformative encounter with one of the world’s greatest stories. Taking ten years to create, this 44 panel exhibition is made up of more than 25 million stitches and if presented side by side, would stretch more than 80 metres.
Artist Jacqui comments:
“It’s lovely to be returning to Southwell Minster, where two parts of Threads through the Bible (Creation and Revelation) were very popular in recent years and added a sparkle to its gentle atmosphere. Now all three parts come together, and the result will be astonishing – with colour and drama in the beautiful setting of the Minster!”
Glenn Formoy, Head of Events at Southwell Minster says:
“This will probably be not only the largest textile project by a single artist ever, but also the largest textile project for hundreds of years. It will be incredible in its scale and variety and we’re very excited to be able to host
this wonderful installation at Southwell Minster.”
Don’t miss this powerful and moving display of faith, art, and storytelling and your chance to witness this exceptional journey through the Bible’s narrative in silk artistry.
Entry: a suggested donation of £5 per person or £10 for families is greatly encouraged. Did you know it costs over £3,000 per day to keep the Minster open!?
More than 35 immersive and interactive light-based installations, performances and activities will be taking place across Nottingham over the two nights, created by local, national and international artists.
Witness Primal Future at Old Market Square, featuring a mesmerising projection on the iconic Council House. This stunning work brings together dynamic dance, cuttingedge technology, and motion graphics, all set to a specially commissioned electronic soundtrack. Audiences can experience a breath-taking fusion of sound, movement, and light, transforming the historic building into a living canvas. This collaborative piece has been created by Nottingham’s Tom Dale Company and Vent Media, in partnership with Nottingham Trent University and the University of Nottingham, funded by Arts Council England.
Both Nottingham universities have generously supported the development and creation of Primal Future. The University of Nottingham’s Department of Civil Engineering provided the staff and technology to undertake a laser scan 3D mesh model of the Council House. Technical teams from Lens Based Media and Immersive Media at Nottingham Trent University’s Department of Design and Digital Arts provided access to green screen technology, where the performances were filmed.
Nottingham Castle will also be bathed with a stunning visual projection, Orbit, created by Inspire Youth Arts, Urban Projections, and music producer Kirk Spencer. It merges the ancient and the cosmic, taking audiences from the birth of the universe to humanity’s ventures into space through spectacular visuals and dynamic soundscapes.
Outside the Castle, visitors can discover a captivating Firefly Field at the Robin Hood Statue, designed by Studio Toer from The Netherlands. Countless glimmering points mimic the graceful movements of nocturnal fireflies, bringing their enchanting dance to life. Continuum is a mirrored, immersive artwork, which will be arranged
LIGHT IT UP
in a geometric maze at Sneinton Market Square. Created by the company who brought the installations illumaphonium and Halo to Nottingham Light Night in 2018 and 2020 – the luminescent structures respond to the audience and create an ever-changing sensory experience, triggering rippling light and sound.
Attendees will be able to plan their itineraries and read more about all the installations using the free It’s in Nottingham app, which is available to download on iOS and Android. Printed guides will also be available from the Tourism Centre on Smithy Row, and at key locations on the day.
Light Night is produced by Nottingham City Council and It’s in Nottingham – the city’s business improvement district. The event is funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, It's in Nottingham, and Nottingham City Council. Cultural organisations across the city also support the event.
Cllr Sam Lux, Executive Member for Carbon Reduction, Leisure and Culture at Nottingham City Council, said: “I’m so happy to see the return of Nottingham Light Night for its 17th year. At this vibrant and family-friendly celebration of creativity, visitors can enjoy more than 35 dazzling installations across the city, all for free. The event offers an affordable and accessible trip out for people and families of all ages, giving them the chance to explore
Nottingham’s incredible venues and spaces in a different light. We are excited to showcase local talent and also welcome an array of artists from across the UK and beyond.”
Alex Flint, CEO of It’s in Nottingham, said: "Nottingham Light Night is a magical event that showcases the creativity, culture, and community spirit of Nottingham. Attracting 50,000 visitors to the city centre each year –it’s a fantastic opportunity to shine a spotlight on the diverse talent and vibrant energy that makes Nottingham such a special place. Events like this not only bring people together but also provide a significant boost to local businesses, reinforcing Nottingham's position as a cultural hub. We’re proud to support an event that lights up our city – and brings joy to so many."
Tom Dale, Artistic Director of Tom Dale Company, said: “Light Night in Nottingham generates a palpable buzz, demonstrating a huge appetite for new and immersive experiences. We've loved showing our live dance and digital artwork at Nottingham Contemporary’s performance space over the last three years. It’s been brilliant to meet new and appreciative audiences, and so we are thrilled to increase the scale again by projecting onto the Council House. Primal Future is in its final stages of creation and I can’t wait to see it in situ!”
The city will be illuminated after dark for this free, family-friendly event, allowing visitors to explore landmarks, streets and hidden corners
GLOBAL BIRDFAIR 2025 CONSERVATION PROJECT
WE ARE EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THE GLOBAL BIRDFAIR 2025 CONSERVATION PROJECT, SAFEGUARDING OCEAN SPECIES.
This important project concentrates on the South Pacific region and gives opportunities to create awareness on a Global scale, alongside BirdLife International’s Seabird and Marine Programme Conservation initiatives.
Global longline fisheries bycatch poses the single greatest threat to many albatross and petrel species, including the critically endangered Antipodean Albatross (Diomedea Antipodensis), this year’s flagship bird. Among other species affected are Flesh-footed, Buller’s, Sooty and Short-tailed Shearwaters, plus other subantarctic visitors to the region: Giant Petrels, Grey Petrels and smaller albatross species.
Global Birdfair projects are chosen carefully by us for their positive impact on species, habitats and people. We hope that Safeguarding Ocean Species addresses critical gaps in awareness and compliance as follows:
S pecies: Ensures the adoption of bestpractice seabird bycatch mitigation measures on longline fishing vessels, directly reducing interactions with highly threatened species like the Antipodean Albatross.
O cean Systems: Contributes to more sustainable fisheries and healthier marine
ecosystems, creating resilience against climate change and improving the longterm sustainability of ocean resources.
S ociety: Strengthens local livelihoods by employing a local Port-based Outreach officer and coordinator, while empowering women through training and paid opportunities to produce tori lines for vessels.
The project is closely aligned with the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP).
Additionally, the project supports the 2050 Blue Pacific Strategy by advancing sustainable fisheries management and promoting biodiversity conservation as part of a broader vision for resilient Pacific ecosystems. Working together, we all need to address the critical state of the World’s Oceans as habitats.

Impressions: Nottingham’s collection meets four masterpieces from the Clark Art Institute, USA.
Nottingham Castle Museum & Art Gallery presents an exciting new collection exhibition, taking the lead from four Impressionist paintings Artists Claude Monet (1840-1926), Camille Pissarro (1830-1903), Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) and Alfred Sisley (18391899) that helped to define the artistic movement known as Impressionism.
These artists work forms the core of this exhibition, thanks to four paintings on loan to Nottingham Castle from The Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts, USA. They are joined by treasures from Nottingham’s own collection, chosen in response to themes and details drawn from each painting, celebrating art and artefacts, some of which were inspired by the Impressionist movement here in our own
The Impressionists’ use of expressive, luminous brushstrokes captured the immediacy of a moment as they saw and experienced it. Their approach to working outdoors in rapidly changing
light and atmosphere, and their observation of modern life, offered a new way of painting in France in the latter half of the 19th century. Reactions to the Impressionists were mixed: some paintings were met with derision and hostility. However, from this radical beginning, Impressionism became one of the most beloved and famous movements in the history of art.
Impressions is an opportunity to look in detail at paintings by four of the founders of Impressionism. Spanning a period from 1870 to 1900, they capture the essence of Impressionist ideas, as the movement evolved.
They have also inspired the team at Nottingham City Museums and Galleries to form their own impressions, taking themes and ideas from each painting to inspire a selection of art, textiles and objects from Nottingham’s wide-ranging collections. They invite you to explore the work of British artists experimenting with light and shade, indoors and outside; spring flowers; the art of letterwriting – and Renoir’s love of hats.
The birth of the artistic movement we now know as Impressionism can be traced to an exhibition in Paris in 1874.
This year, its 150th anniversary is being widely celebrated, this exhibition is an opportunity for our local communities to see paintings by world-renowned artists ‘on their doorstep’ and for all visitors to explore them alongside Nottingham’s rich and diverse collections.
Standard admission applies. For more information visit the website nottinghamcastle.org.uk/impressions

Celebrating aShakespeare Summer at City Venue
The Theatre Royal & Royal Concert Hall (TRCH) is proud to announce this year's highly anticipated Playmaking Festival, a vibrant celebration of Shakespeare, now in its seventh year. This summer, young people from across Nottingham will bring Shakespeare storytelling to life as they take to the Theatre Royal stage with their own unique adaptation of Macbeth.
Partnering with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) as part of its national schools partnership programme, the Associate Schools Programme, TRCH will work with eight schools—The Chilwell School, Joseph Whitaker School, Djanogly City Academy, Bluecoat Beechdale Academy, Bluecoat Trent Academy, Bluecoat Aspley Academy, Sutherland House School, and Southglade Primary—to develop this thrilling production. Under the guidance of TRCH’s Shakespeare specialist and an RSC Associate Learning Practitioner, students and staff will engage in RSC Rehearsal Room techniques, creative devising, and a 6-month exploration of the text, culminating in an unforgettable twoday festival.
On 7 and 8 July, these schools will experience the full magic of theatre with technical and dress rehearsals with the venue’s in-house professionals, followed by a performance in the Theatre Royal’s stunning Victorian auditorium, which marks its 160th anniversary this year. Over 1,100 audience members, including families, friends, and school communities—
who can attend for free—will witness the next generation of performers bring Shakespeare’s dark and gripping tragedy to life.
The Theatre Royal & Royal Concert Hall bring Nottingham’s young people and communities together through the power of Shakespeare, with a Playmaking Festival and community production later this year.
This youth-led festival comes just weeks after TRCH’s ambitious community production of Hamlet: The Rest is Silence, which takes place on 10 and 11 June at the Royal Concert Hall. Featuring a cast and crew of local Nottingham residents, working alongside a professional director, technical director, and producer, as well as sessions with RSC Shakespeare specialists, this innovative retelling of Hamlet cements TRCH’s role as the powerhouse for Shakespeare in the city. More information is available here.
It’s not too late for schools to get involved in this year’s Playmaking Festival, by joining the venue’s RSC Associate Schools Programme. Schools who are interested can find out more by contacting TRCH’s Learning Partnerships Manager, Becky Morris, at rebecca.morris@ nottinghamcity.gov.uk.
Participation in the Playmaking Festival is only one small part of the RSC’s Associate Schools Programme, which offers year-round opportunities for schools to partner with TRCH and the RSC, and engage with Shakespeare through workshops, pedagogy, performances, student leadership programmes, show tickets, trips, tours, and CPD training. The Playmaking Festival requires a £500 contribution, while the rest of the programme is fully funded and provided at no cost to schools, offering even more valuable opportunities throughout the year.

Timeless Elegance
Visiting the grand stately homes and gardens of the Midlands offers a unique glimpse into the history and splendor of British aristocracy, where architectural elegance and sprawling landscapes blend to create awe-inspiring experiences. Nestled across the rolling hills and picturesque countryside, these estates offer visitors an unforgettable journey through time, showcasing the luxury and opulence that characterized the lives of the British elite.
Upon arrival at a stately home in the Midlands, one is immediately struck by the sheer scale and grandeur of the estate. The impressive facades of these homes are often constructed from local stone or brick, designed to impress with their towering walls, classical columns, and intricate detailing. Some homes reflect the architectural styles of the past centuries, showcasing Georgian, Victorian, or even Elizabethan influences. These period features not only tell a story of architectural evolution but also convey the wealth and status of the families who once resided in such opulence.
Inside, visitors are welcomed into large, meticulously decorated rooms, each reflecting the tastes and lifestyles of the era. Stately homes were designed to impress and entertain, so visitors will often find lavish interiors adorned with intricate woodwork, elaborate ceilings, and grand fireplaces. The furnishings are just as luxurious, with antique furniture, fine tapestries, and ornate chandeliers contributing to an atmosphere of elegance. In

some of these grand homes, the walls are lined with impressive works of art, many of which have been passed down through generations of the same family. The art collections might include portraits of the family members themselves, as well as pieces by renowned artists, giving visitors a deeper insight into the cultural and social influences of the time.
Exploring these homes, one might also encounter expansive halls and chambers, often used for grand receptions and gatherings. These spaces were designed not only for comfort but also to serve as venues for showcasing wealth. The great halls, with their high vaulted ceilings and grand staircases, were the
centre of social life, where the elite would host banquets, dances, and balls. In these spaces, it’s easy to imagine the glittering social events that once took place, where noble families mingled in fine attire, and the clinking of silver cutlery echoed throughout the room.
One of the most captivating aspects of visiting these estates is the opportunity to wander through the surrounding gardens. The gardens of stately homes in the Midlands are renowned for their beauty and complexity. Many of these estates boast immaculately designed formal gardens, often created to complement the grandeur of the house itself. These gardens might feature symmetrical flowerbeds, neatly trimmed hedges, and striking pathways that lead visitors through a labyrinth of floral displays. Ornate fountains and carefully placed statues add a sense of classical elegance, while the vibrant colours of the flowers provide a stark contrast to the surrounding greenery.

Timeless Elegance
Beyond the formal gardens, many estates also feature more naturalistic landscapes, with rolling lawns, ancient trees, and serene lakes. Visitors can take leisurely strolls through these vast grounds, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. In some estates, the gardens have been designed to reflect the landscape's natural beauty, with wildflower meadows, woodland walks, and even cultivated orchards. The diversity of plant life, from towering trees to delicate blossoms, reflects the skill and care taken to create an environment that not only complements the house but also serves as a sanctuary for wildlife.
In addition to the main gardens, many stately homes in the Midlands have extensive grounds that are home to ornamental lakes, ponds, and woodlands. These areas were often designed to provide privacy and seclusion for the family, offering peaceful retreats where one could take in the beauty of nature. Visitors might also find the remnants of historic structures such as old follies, pavilions, or even ruins that tell the story of the estate's past. These features not only add to the charm of the landscape but also offer a sense of intrigue, inviting visitors to imagine the stories behind these now-abandoned corners of the grounds.
For those with an interest in horticulture or landscape design, the gardens of stately homes provide an invaluable
opportunity to learn about the evolution of garden design. From the intricate parterres of the Renaissance to the more naturalistic designs of the 19th century, these gardens represent a broad range of styles and ideas, each carefully crafted to complement the architecture and setting of the home. Many of these estates also feature well-preserved kitchen gardens, where fruits and vegetables were once grown for the household, as well as herbaceous borders, which were often used for medicinal purposes. Stately homes in the Midlands often offer more than just a glimpse of the past through their architecture and gardens. Many of these estates have been preserved and are open to the public, offering a variety of events and activities throughout the year. From
historical reenactments and garden tours to seasonal events like flower shows or festive celebrations, these homes offer a dynamic experience that engages visitors of all ages. For those with a keen interest in history, some estates offer educational programs and exhibits that delve deeper into the lives of the families who once resided there, as well as the broader historical context in which these homes were built and maintained.
Visiting these stately homes and gardens provides more than just a look into the luxurious past of the British aristocracy; it offers an opportunity to experience the culture, creativity, and history of the region. Whether walking through the grand halls of an estate or enjoying the serenity of the gardens, visitors will leave with a renewed appreciation for the beauty and craftsmanship that define these enduring landmarks of the Midlands. The estates stand as a testament to the vision and determination of those who built them and offer a rare chance to step back in time and experience them.
Lamport Hall
The Hall and gardens can be explored by visitors on Wednesdays and Thursdays from April to September alongside our café and shop. The gardens are open 10am-4pm whilst the Hall is open on a freeflow basis from 12pm-3pm. There is an optional guided tour at 10:30am.
VISIT LAMPORT HALL
Developed from a Tudor manor house, architecturally the hall has been worked on by Smith of Warwick and William Burn but is best known for its John Webb classical frontage.
The Hall’s fine rooms, including the High Room of 1655 and 18th century library, are filled with a wealth of outstanding furniture, books, china and paintings collected by the Isham family. Most were bought during the 3rd Baronet’s Grand Tour of Europe, in the 1670s. The first floor has undergone lengthy restoration, allowing further paintings and furniture to be displayed.
The ravages of two world wars and economic depression meant that the twentieth century was not kind to many of Britain’s country houses. At different times during the last century Lamport Hall has been a family home, divided into flats, a hunting box, a country club, a home for the Northamptonshire Records Office, a British and Czech army base and an Italian prisoner of war camp. Years of poor maintenance resulted in an outbreak of dry rot which, during the 1970s, saw large sections of the house gutted.
The Isham family lived at Lamport for over 400 years, until Sir Gyles Isham, the 12th Baronet, died in 1976. In his will he bequeathed the Hall, with its contents and Estate, to the Lamport Hall Preservation Trust.
Although the size and location of the gardens has remained the same since they were first laid out, the design has changed significantly over the generations.
Today the gardens include extensive herbaceous borders and shrubbery walks containing some rare and interesting plants, providing year round interest. The Walled Garden was replanted in 2010 and is full of unusual tall perennial plants, many sourced from Piet Oudolf’s nursery in the Netherlands. A vibrant array of colour and variety of plants are intersected by gravelled pathways with hidden doors and relaxing benches to be found.
The gardens have had a boost in interest from a national audience recently as Monty Don featured the rockery and garden gnome on his BBC series about British gardens, exploring the best gardens that the isle has to offer.
EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS AT BELVOIR CASTLE
With its sprawling parkland, tranquil gardens, stylish Retail Village and its epic adventure playground, Belvoir Castle is encouraging visitors to head outside this February half term
For a family day out to remember, young adventurers can take to the high seas at Belvoir’s adventure playground, designed in the shape of the HMS Resolution. Staring out to sea through the portholes, or shivering their timbers on the poop deck, the ship is modelled on the adventures of an ancestor of the Duke of Rutland.
Also featuring a multi-level castle modelled on Belvoir’s famous tower, children of all ages and abilities can explore a daring giant tube slide, secret climbing wall and hidden tunnels in the bespoke playground.
Visitors will also be able to enjoy thousands of beautiful Snowdrops on show through the parkland and gardens as they wander through the picturesque grounds. To explore the acres of parkland, The Duke’s Walk is a three-mile circular that takes in areas designed by Sir Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown in 1780 which have been brought to life by the Duchess of Rutland after the plans were discovered in the Castle archives in 2013.
During The Duke’s Walk, visitors will discover Frog Hollow, with its stunning ponds surrounded by magnificent old pines dotted along the route, also a hub for wildlife including muntjacs, hares, buzzards, red kites, woodpeckers and ospreys.
Andy Tudbury, Head Gardener at Belvoir Castle said: “Whilst we all eagerly await the opening of the castle itself next month after its annual maintenance period, there is still so much to see and do during a day out in the castle grounds.
“The team have been working incredibly hard over winter on the upkeep of the gardens, and the Snowdrops which all came out early this year will be at their peak during the half term. Getting out into the fresh air with such a beautiful backdrop as Belvoir Castle will give everyone a lift after the dark nights and cold weather.
“Vendors at the Retail Village have some wonderful items for visitors to peruse during their time here. Beautiful in every weather, everyone at Belvoir Castle can’t wait to welcome everyone for the half term break.”
Open seven days a week, Belvoir’s Retail Village at the Engine Yard is the perfect
place to enjoy a delicious lunch or a cake and hot chocolate after a morning in the fresh air.
The retail destination offers artisan shopping in the heart of the stunning Vale of Belvoir and celebrates local food and the best of country living. Restored from working estate buildings, it is home to the latest fashions and accessories from homewares, crafts and toys as well as a range of delicious produce from the Belvoir Estate available in the Farm Shop.
The gardens open from 9:30am, and visitors can also bring along their fourlegged friends on an epic day out, with dogs on leads permitted in the grounds, but not in the adventure playground.
Ruth has more reason than most to be grateful to the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance. She has been airlifted to hospital twice after sustaining serious injuries from horseriding accidents.
In June 2009, Ruth was thrown from her horse at her home near Grantham, Lincolnshire, breaking her pelvis in four places.
In October 2011, Ruth was thrown again, resulting in a broken leg. Both times LNAA crew were called to her aid. The doctor and paramedic team treated her for her injuries before she was airlifted to Lincoln County Hospital.
Ruth will forever be grateful to LNAA. She said: “The difference that the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance team makes when you have a serious injury and are in pain is outstanding!”
To show her gratitude, Ruth participates in LNAA challenge events. Her first event for 2025 will be to join crew on the LNAA’s Side By Side walk
on 23 March at Sherwood Pines, Nottinghamshire. This 5km stroll through the ancient woodlands gives everyone
the chance to support this vital charity and also understand more about LNAA’s life-saving work.

5 top tips to make your car winter-ready
As the UK suffers from more stormy and cold weather, insurance experts at A-plan Insurance have compiled a list of the top five tips to keep cars going through the winter.
Know how to read a dashboard
All cars come with lights and symbols to indicate an issue; however, these are not the same across all makes and models. Around 52% of drivers can correctly identify what the warning lights mean but it’s essential that drivers recognise the 12 most common symbols using the manual that came with the car.
If any of the red lights appear, that is an immediate warning to take your car to a garage so it can be fixed. If a yellow light appears, it can still be serious but not as urgent so take the vehicle to be checked as soon as possible.
Check tyre pressure and tread depthOften, drivers don’t think about their tyres. By law, the minimum tread depth is 1.6mm, but it’s recommended that tyres should be changed at 3mm. Tread depth refers to the grooves in tyres and it helps to grip the road surface. In wet conditions, a shallow tread depth increases the chance of aquaplaning and losing control of the vehicle.
Check the battery - The number one cause of vehicle breakdowns, in cold or wet weather, is the battery going flat. Batteries are at a greater risk of failure due to the cold temperatures slowing down the processes within the battery, which reduces its ability to hold a charge.
Cold weather can also cause condensation to form as the freezing air meets the hot air surrounding the battery and engine. This condensation can then cause corrosion which damages the components. If the car sputters when the ignition is started or the red warning light flickers, the battery needs to be changed.
This is even more important in electric vehicles as the charging speed and effectiveness of the battery can be impacted, leading to a less efficient vehicle.
Don’t let the car sit for a long time - Older, pre-1980's cars, needed to be left idling to warm up but for modern vehicles, this does more harm than good, damaging spark plugs and producing almost double the emissions of a moving car.
To keep the engine in top shape, a short drive of around 15-20 minutes is needed. This doesn’t need to be every day, but regularly running a vehicle for this period keeps the battery and engine healthy and ensures that the oil is at a workable consistency to start the vehicle.
A slow, gentle pace will allow the engine to warm up safely and ensure that all parts are working correctly.
Check the lights work and fluid levels are correct - As the nights and early mornings get darker, commuters should check their headlights, brake lights, and indicators are all working properly. Ask a friend to stand outside and check the lights to identify any bulbs that might need changing.
While performing these checks, inspecting the fluid levels in your car can also help to reduce the risk of damage. Checking the anti-freeze and oil levels can help to keep the engine running, and these are simple to top up without visiting a garage.

FRANGIPANI collaborates with the iconic Cotton House in Mustique
Travel and the celebration of effortless laid back style is woven into the fabric of Frangipani. Known for its bold use of colour it has amassed a fanbase of men drawn to its unique prints and reverence for ‘the good times’. For its latest collaboration, the brand has chosen an ode to the original sunseekers paradise, Mustique, designing a range of shirts for The Cotton House which opened in 1969 and is still the only hotel on the island.
OWN A PIECE OF THE MUSTIQUE MAGIC. GIVE BACK TO THE ISLAND'S CHARITABLE TRUST
The shirts will be available to buy at the Cotton House, and for those that can’t make a trip to the island, a limited number will be available from
the Frangipani website. 50% of profits from web sales will be donated to the UK Friends of Mustique Charitable Trust, which supports numerous causes on the island, including the Marine Conservation Bursary Programme. The shirts will be available to buy from 10th of February.
Mustique rose to prominence in the 1960s when Princess Margaret was given a plot of land on the island as a wedding present. It quickly became a hotspot for royalty and serious ‘A Listers’ to relax … and to party! Capturing the imagination of guests from David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Kate Moss (who celebrated her 50th there) and Margot Robbie, the island is luxurious and chic but with a pared back freedom to it. As such, it is the perfect partner for Frangipani, which incidentally shares its name with the stunning Frangipani villa on the island.
The range of two shirts will be exclusively available to buy at The Cotton House; a charming set of 17 bedroom suites with private verandas and plunge pools set in 13 acres of tropical gardens running down to Endeavour Beach. Each shirt features hand drawn, iconic emblems of Mustique including the island ‘mule’ vehicles, Hairoun beer bottles, backgammon boards, palm shaded beach picnic thatches, private island hopper planes and of course, tortoises ‘in flagrante’!
The shirts are produced in premium organic cotton for maximum quality and endurance. They will also be sold as limited edition pieces on the Frangipani website, costing £150. The Mustique-inspired print captures the essence of this Caribbean paradise, with imagery reflecting the island’s unique heritage, tranquil beauty and sense of fun. The shirts, designed with the laidback luxury of the Cotton House in mind, evoke the spirit of Mustique, making them ideal for both beachside relaxation and casual evening wear.
Other Frangipani fans comprise of British icons including; rock & roll royalty Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood & Roger Taylor, James Blunt, Ray Winstone, Ian Wright, chefs Yotam Ottolenghi & Mark Hix, model Poppy Delevingne, actor Rhys Ifans & reality TV star Hugo Taylor. The brand is also popular with high-profile DJ’s and dance music’s elite, including Carl Cox, Darren Emerson (the dance music pioneer), Normal Cook & his son Woody, and Freddie Fellowes, the founder of Secret Garden Party. Even Stefano Gabbana of Dolce & Gabbana has been pictured in one. Music is important to Frangipani and its wearers; their shirts are a festival must have. Seen all over Wilderness, Glastonbury and Womad; Frangipani shirts are made to live in and worn to celebrate the best of times.
Shirts are priced at £180 (at both The Cotton House, and the Frangipani website), in sizes Small to XXL.

You may swear a loved one to secrecy about your reasons to cut a few ties and put distance between yourself and someone you have tolerated. If you have experienced personal unhappiness and depression, you are about to turn a magical corner and feel happy and uplifted once again.
People that you have disengaged from do not feature in your future, they have not changed a jot but you have. This is what is causing them confusion. They thought they knew you well, bu they don’t and didn’t. You are entering one of the greatest periods of your life, because you are discovering who you are and enjoying the inner peace it brings. Golden offers of work with the chance to really excel in what you are good at, will open some wonderful new doors. So go for it!!

15Minute Meditation
The term mindfulness is one that we hear frequently and for most, is probably something that we could benefit from paying attention to. With many of us leading increasingly hectic lives, learning to stop and notice the world around us can help to reduce our stress and anxiety.
One way that some people slowdown is through meditation. It’s the practice that involves focusing the mind and eliminating distractions to achieve a state of calm and clarity. It can help with stress reduction, mental clarity, emotional balance, and overall well-being. While it can be beneficial, a lot of people are put off due to fears that reaching this state is too complex. There are many types of meditation, such as mindfulness, guided meditation, mantra meditation, and lovingkindness meditation.
It can also offers a wide range of health benefits, both mentally and physically. Here's a few to get you started...
Reduces Stress
One of the most well-known benefits of meditation is its ability to reduce stress. Mindfulness meditation, in particular, helps you stay present and less affected by stressors.
Improves Mental Clarity and Focus
Meditation can enhance your concentration and cognitive function. It trains the mind to focus, which can improve memory and decision-making.
Improves Emotional Well-being
Regular practice has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and emotional reactivity. It can help create a more balanced emotional state.
Promotes Better Sleep
By reducing stress and calming the mind, meditation can improve sleep quality, helping people fall asleep faster and wake up feeling more rested.
Boosts Immune System
Meditation has been linked to improved immune function, which can help the body fight off infections more effectively.
Lowers Blood Pressure
Meditation can help reduce blood pressure, which is beneficial for heart health and reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Enhances Self-awareness
Practices like mindfulness can help you become more aware of your thoughts and behavior patterns, leading to better selfunderstanding and personal growth.
Reduces Symptoms of Anxiety and Depression
Studies have shown that mindfulness meditation can significantly reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, potentially offering a complementary treatment for those struggling with these conditions.
Helps in Pain Management
Meditation techniques like mindfulness can alter how the brain processes pain, leading to a reduction in perceived pain intensity.
Increases Compassion and Empathy
Loving-kindness meditation, in particular, helps cultivate positive emotions like compassion and empathy, which can improve relationships with others.
Meditation doesn’t require a lot of time to see benefit - just a few minutes a day can make a difference. If you’re keen to relax and find peace, try this quick and easy 15 minute routine to break you into the practice of meditation slowly.
Get comfortable
If you’re going to achieve a state of complete calmness, you’ll need to make sure that you are comfortable. This might be on the floor or sat on the corner of your bed. Either way, keep your back straight and place your arms wherever feels natural.
Relax your body
Next you’ll need to focus on deep breathing to help push out the tension in your body. Try and visualise your stress or anxiety leaving your body, perhaps from your head or feet.
Empty your mind
For most people, this is the biggest challenge with meditation.
To give yourself a good shot at reaching a relaxed state, avoid pressuring yourself to think of ‘nothing’ and instead turn your attention to your present state and being in the moment. When thoughts about your daily life slip into your mind, don’t freak out. Instead, acknowledge them and then put them to one side while your refocus on now.
Keep going
To reap the full benefits of meditation, it’s important that you keep up the process for the full 15 minutes. Try and factor this into your daily routine, either in the morning or the evening, and you’re sure to be feeling more relaxed in no time!
Health & Wellbeing
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT
Superfoods have a high potential for promoting health or preventing disease. Here's 5 cupboard essentials you probably have without realising their greater benefits!
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
Widely known as a bacteria-fighting household cleaner, this liquid can also be mixed with dish soap and salt to make for an incredibly effective weed killer.
But for more pressing human body-related health benefits, you can look to the weight loss results that come about due to the acetic acid, which slows down fat accumulation.
This acid also binds to toxins, which can assist in removing them from the body, while the high potassium content breaks up mucus within the body and clears the lymph nodes.
The amino acids present combat lactic acid build up that can happen after exercise. Useful on bruises, to whiten teeth, stop smelly feet and eradicate bad breath, apple cider vinegar is certainly one to be adding to the shopping list. It’s worth noting that the cloudy stuff is best because it contains friendly bacteria.
TURMERIC
linked to depression and Alzheimer’s disease. Many studies also point to turmeric as a vital ingredient in the battle with heart disease, thanks to its ability to improve the function of the lining of the blood vessels.
Cancer, arthritis, anxiety and agerelated chronic diseases are also treatable with turmeric.
GINGER:
With versatility galore, Turmeric is like the Apple Cider Vinegar of the spice world. Hugely medicinal, the yellowy, curry spice has been celebrated for its healing properties for thousands of years.
The active ingredient is curcumin, which has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. However, in order to absorb as much curcumin as possible into the bloodstream, it is recommended to take black pepper along with it. The black pepper contains piperine – a natural substance that enhances the absorption of curcumin by 2000%.
A super-antioxidant, curcumin is firstly able to block free radicals directly, then stimulates the body’s own antioxidant mechanisms.
To top it all off, turmeric contains a type of growth hormone that functions in the brain, a shortage of which has been
Travel sick? Indigestion? Common cold? Try chomping on some ginger. Renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties, the root of ginger has been used in many forms of traditional and alternative medicine.
The fiery, fibrous rhizome helps reduce the day-to-day progression of muscle pain and soreness. It is helpful with osteoarthritis and alleviates digestive pain thanks to its ability to help accelerate the emptying of the stomach by 50%.
Gingerol, the bioactive substance in fresh ginger, can help lower the risk of infections. It is particularly effective on inflammatory diseases in the gums, such as gingivitis and periodontitis.
GARLIC:
“Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.” They are the words of ancient Greek physician Hippocrates – often called the father of
Western Medicine. The treatment legend used to prescribe garlic in relation to a number of medical conditions. Low in calories, high in manganese, garlic is said to help you be able to live longer.
As it thins the blood, it takes pressure off the heart and arteries and contributes to a calmer physical experience.
It’s also a seemingly unlikely performance supplement, which has been given to competitive sportspeople for hundreds of years, dating back to ancient Greece – where it was administered to Olympic athletes.
PARSLEY:
Beneficial in treating a variety of ailments. Parsley is an excellent source of vitamin K (strong bones, healthy heart) and vitamin C (immune-boosting, blood pressure-lowering) as well as vitamin A (skin health, vision-improving), folate (cholesterol-regulating, strokereducing) and iron (fatigue-fighting, blood-forming).
This magical medicinal herb’s high enzyme content contributes in improving overall digestion, and the effective elimination of waste.
The immune-boosting, breath-freshening leaf – which was prescribed back in the days of Hippocrates for digestive disorders and used in a formula for kidney and bladder stones – is still recommended for bloating and flatulence, thanks to its ability to prevent the formation of gas in the body.
Whether you’ve been enjoying family celebrations, holiday treats, or travel, these 10 practical fitness tips from Gym Flooring Suppliers at Sprung Gym Flooring will help you get back on track and set a positive tone for the year ahead.
1. Start with small, achievable changes
Instead of overwhelming yourself with unrealistic fitness goals, begin with small, manageable adjustments. If you typically work out for an hour, aim for shorter, 20-minute sessions. These manageable workouts can help ease you back into your routine without feeling like a major challenge.
2. Create a fitness schedule and stick to it
Planning is key to success. Set specific times for your workouts, treating them as appointments that you can’t miss. Whether it’s first thing in the morning or just before a healthy dinner, scheduling your exercise sessions will help you stay committed.
3. Try fun, seasonal activities
A new year is the perfect time to refresh your fitness routine with fun activities. Go for a brisk walk in the winter weather, try indoor ice skating, or even sign up for a local 5k event. These enjoyable activities will keep you active while helping you embrace the seasonal spirit.
4. Make fitness a family affair
A new year is a great opportunity to involve your loved ones in staying active. Rather than lounging after meals, organise group activities like a family walk or a fun game of tag. These shared moments will not only keep everyone active but also help create lasting memories.
5. Opt for quick, effective workouts
If time is tight, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a great way to get a full-body workout in just 15-20 minutes. These quick and effective workouts can be done at home, making them ideal for a busy start to the year. Put on your favourite tunes and make it an energising and fun part of your day.
6. Reward yourself for progress
As you start your new fitness routine, set milestones along the way. Celebrate each achievement whether it’s enjoying a
special treat, treating yourself to a relaxing afternoon, or watching your favourite show. Rewards give you something to look forward to and help you stay motivated throughout the year.
7.
Focus on consistency, not perfection
It’s important to understand that perfection isn’t the goal. If you miss a workout or indulge a bit, don’t let it derail your progress. What matters is staying consistent over time. Keep making small, sustainable efforts towards your goals, and don’t be too hard on yourself.
8. Stay active even when travelling
For those who are travelling as the new year begins, maintaining your fitness routine can be tricky. But with a little planning, it’s completely achievable. Consider taking a walk after meals, or pack portable fitness equipment like resistance bands or dumbbells for a quick workout on the go.
9. Incorporate active recovery into your routine
Recovery is just as important as exercise. Integrate light stretching, yoga, or foam rolling to improve flexibility, reduce stress, and prevent injury. These activities will help you stay physically balanced, especially as you transition from the holidays to your new fitness routine.
10. Join a fitness challenge to stay motivated
Kickstart your year by participating in a fitness challenge with friends or family. Whether it’s a daily step count, a plank challenge, or committing to a certain number of workouts each week, a little friendly competition can help you stay on track and make your wellness journey even more enjoyable.
“Staying active after the holidays doesn’t have to be stressful,” says Richard McKay, CEO of Sprung Gym Flooring. “By making small adjustments, having fun with fitness, and focusing on consistency, you can make a seamless transition into the new year and maintain your health goals while enjoying time with loved ones. Remember, it’s all about balance—so keep moving and have fun!”

Inheritance Tax on Farms
Sam Cawley from Nelsons discusses
your Inheritance Tax liability
The new rules outlined by the Government restrict the value of agricultural property that can be passed on free from inheritance tax to £1m per person. Although the rate is at a reduced 20% this could bring many farms within the scope of inheritance tax and make passing farms between generations while maintaining the feasibility of the business tricky.
Assess The Situation
The first thing to do is to establish what your own situation is. Farmers like everyone else have the same potentially £1m worth of inheritance tax allowances that can be used as a couple, £325,000 each for any assets and a further £175,000 each upon passing your home on to lineal descendants.
These allowances are transferable between spouses so whoever lives the longest can have a total of £1m to pass on. The £1m of agricultural property relief is in addition to this but is not transferable between spouses so without changes families could miss out on half the allowance they are entitled to. However, with sensible wording in your wills your estate can be structured to take advantage of two lots of the new allowance, so a review of your wills should be high on your list of priorities.
Passing on the farm during your lifetime
While sensible structuring may alleviate the problem for many farms, with the current price of agricultural land there could still be significant bills for many families. The simplest way to mitigate this is to pass assets on during your lifetime. Assets gifted more than 7 years before death will not be assessed for inheritance tax. Although this is simple, the assets would be legally passed to the next generation and could be the subject of future events such as divorce or bankruptcy, so putting in appropriate legal protections such as pre or post-nuptial agreements should be considered.

WHERE LUXURY MEETS NATURE
As the demand for unique travel experiences continues to rise, glamping has emerged as a leading trend that blends the best of both worlds: the beauty of nature and the comforts of luxury. For those who want to escape the chaos of everyday life but aren’t keen on sacrificing modern conveniences, glamping provides the perfect solution.
Gone are the days of sleeping on hard ground or struggling with tents; glamping offers a sophisticated way to enjoy the great outdoors while indulging in the finer things. Whether it’s a luxurious safari tent in the woods or a cozy treehouse perched in the mountains, glamping has redefined what it means to "camp."
What is Glamping?
A combination of glamorous and camping, offers a more comfortable and luxurious experience than traditional camping. There are different types of glamping accommodation. If you're not used to traditional camping, glamping can be a fantastic way to dip your toes into outdoor adventures while still feeling pampered.
Why
is Glamping So Popular?
Unlike regular camping, where you may need to pitch a tent and sleep on the ground, glamping offers cosy beds, electricity, heating, and sometimes even private bathrooms. It's a great way to enjoy the outdoors without giving up comfort. Many glamping sites are designed with sustainability in mind, using eco-friendly materials and practices.
Glamping vs Traditional Camping
Traditional camping can require more gear, effort, and a tolerance for discomfort, while glamping eliminates these challenges. It requires less setup and effort, making it an attractive option for beginners. You can immerse yourself in nature, but you don’t have to do all the work that usually comes
with camping, like setting up camp or cooking over a fire.
Benefits of Glamping
Glamping opens outdoor experiences to those who might not have the ability or desire to camp in more rugged conditions. It's perfect for romantic getaways, family vacations, or group retreats. Being in nature is known to reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance creativity. Glamping sites often offer stays in unique locations - like yurts, treehouses, safari tents, or converted airstreams - giving you a one-of-a-kind experience.
Why go Glamping?
Glamping has revolutionized outdoor experiences by combining luxury and nature and can be a fun way to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, or other events. Some sites cater to group activities or offer added services like catered meals or excursions. Many glamping spots come with additional perks like hot tubs, gourmet meals, spa treatments, and guided outdoor activities - giving you the best of both worlds. If you love the idea of disconnecting and relaxing in nature but don’t want to deal with the physical strain of traditional camping, glamping offers a more restful way to get away.
Ultimately, it’s about combining the adventure and tranquility of nature with a level of comfort that suits your preferences!

THE MODERN MUST-HAVE RISING UP THE RANKS
Media walls have quickly become a staple in many modern homes. With the rise of new builds and contemporary houses lacking traditional chimney breasts, homeowners are looking at ways to incorporate a fire while maximising space and creating an engaging focal point.
With an array of design variations to choose from, each with their own distinct look and feel, Joanna Humphreys, Fire and Stove Specialist at Direct Fireplaces delves deeper into this modern must-have and shares her thoughts.
Multi-functionality and spacesaving benefits
The multi-functional nature and spacesaving benefits of media walls are key reasons behind their growing popularity in the UK. A media wall can house all of your entertainment devices in one place, offering a practical solution that avoids taking up unnecessary floor space.
Designed to meet your specific needs, media walls can be designed to incorporate more than just entertainment. For example, hidden cabinets, drawers or shelving, can provide additional living room storage, helping to keep it tidy, organised and clutter-free.
Combining an inset fireplace with your entertainment system in a media wall setup will enhance warmth and ambience. It also eliminates the need for a bulky fire surround or suite, making it an excellent way to streamline your living space, ideal for those working with a smaller floor plan.
Getting everyone together
A media wall can transform your home into a hub of socialisation, perfect for everything from movie nights and gaming tournaments to get-togethers with family and friends.
By creating a central entertainment hub, your living room will naturally become the go-to gathering space. If the inset fire provides sufficient heat for the room where everyone is likely spending most of their time!) it may also reduce reliance on other heating solutions, helping to lower household energy bills.
Design flexibility
Media walls can give your living room a contemporary boost, creating a space that feels streamlined and sleek. Fully customisable, media walls can be tailored to complement the aesthetic of your living room with the interchangeable materials, colours, storage options and entertainment integrations to suit your design
preferences and needs of the home. For a personal touch, use the display space to showcase your favourite artwork, photographs or other small decorative items. These additions can help to make your living room feel more inviting and unique to you.
Are there any energy efficiency advantages?
Choosing an LED TV not only enhances picture quality and overall aesthetics but it also uses less energy and produces less heat compared to traditional LCD screens. This energy efficiency can help lower your energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint.
Integrating smart products, such as a smart fire or smart lighting, further optimises your energy consumption. Features like automatic timers or the ability to control the fire and lights from your smartphone, make it easy to manage usage and minimise energy waste.

There is Just No Comparison to Matki
When Louise set out to update a bathroom in her Nottingham home, there was only one name on her list: Matki. Having previously experienced the exceptional quality and bespoke craftsmanship of Matki products, she returned for her latest bathroom renovation project—and once again, the results exceeded her expectations.
“The first time I used Matki was a few years ago when I needed a custom shower screen for an unusually shaped room,” Louise shared. “A specialist bathroom showroom, Utopia Interiors in Newark, recommended Matki, and their bespoke solution was both striking and practical. This time, I had no hesitation in going back to them for my new bathroom.”
For her latest installation, Louise paired Matki’s signature wet room panel and shower tray with luxurious fittings from
Swadling Brassware, Matki’s sister brand. “The taps from Swadling Brassware are a delight to use, with a beautiful weight and tactile feel,” she explained. “And the shower screen is so easy to clean - it’s a small thing, but it makes a big difference when you want to maintain that sparkling, fresh look.”
Louise was equally impressed with Matki’s service: “It’s important to trust the people you’re working with, and Matki consistently delivers. From their knowledgeable sales team to their reliable installation experts, I always feel confident I’m getting the best service possible.”
For Louise, Matki remains her first choice for any bathroom project: “Their quality is unmatched. Whether it’s the size, design, or functionality, Matki products always elevate my bathrooms. They’re worth every penny.”
unique vintage homeware
Some of a Kind has just launched a website selling affordable second-hand and vintage homeware - www.someofakind. co.uk. They have an eclectic selection of products, including quirky candlesticks, vintage espresso sets and second-hand vases.
According to research, UK consumers are wanting to buy more second-hand homeware and shop more sustainably. 71% of consumers bought or sold used goods in 2023, with homeware proving to be the second highest category purchased behind fashion. The top 2 reasons for buying secondhand items in the UK were cited as being for environmental reasons, followed by the cost of living crisis..
However, finding the time to shop second-hand homeware can prove difficult, as it often involves going to car boot sales, charity shops or buying off Facebook Marketplace, all of which are very time intensive to actually find something you would want in your home.
Some of a Kind have done the hard work for you, sourcing
second-hand products which are in great condition, as well as being stylish and affordable.
Everything on the website is handpicked by the owner, Charlie Ashby, who says; “As someone who has always wanted to launch their own business, I’m excited to introduce Some of a Kind. We are all about helping people create unique, character filled homes without compromising the planet.
I know I’m not the only one that loves having a mooch round a charity shop or car boot sale but it’s a lot of effort for sometimes very little reward. I wanted to give people a place where they can make good choices in an easier way, whilst still being affordable.”

KITCHEN TRENDS 2025
THE KITCHEN PLAYS A KEY ROLE IN SHAPING THE ATMOSPHERE AND MOOD OF A HOME. NOW, THE CENTRAL HUB, THE KITCHEN IS WHERE ALL THE ACTION TAKES PLACE, A SPACE WHERE MEALS ARE PREPARED AND ENJOYED, HOSTING AND SOCIALISING COME TO LIFE AND DAILY LIFE PLAYS OUT.
When it comes to interior trends, combining style and functionality is key in complementing the many demands of the modern kitchen. Here, Al Bruce, Founder of Olive & Barr, shares his thoughts on the kitchen trends expected to shape 2025.
SOCIAL SEATING
“The kitchen continues to be one of the busiest rooms in the home with connection and hosting being at the top of homeowners' wish lists. Creating comfortable, easy spaces that encourage people to relax and socialise is becoming increasingly sought after.
Although the island remains the central hub of the kitchen, we see additional informal dining and cosy seating being introduced, be it a casual dining table with reclaimed chairs, stylish banquette seating or small intimate nooks to perch on. This extra seating isn’t structured or formal; it’s creative, fun, uncomplicated and easy to introduce in both new and existing kitchen designs.”
ATMOSPHERIC COLOUR PALETTE
“In 2025, we expect homeowners
to embrace a more atmospheric colour palette, introducing richer hues, including reds, blacks, and deep earth tones such as brown and burgundy. The rich decadence of these colours adds a sophisticated touch while creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere.
Dark shades allow other materials and textures to shine, particularly cabinetry hardware and natural materials such as stone and wood. If committing to an entirely dark palette feels overwhelming, consider incorporating these rich tones through elements such as tiling or worktops.
Brass worktops have become increasingly popular in the last year, and we expect this to continue, especially on feature and freestanding islands. Practical and versatile, brass complements a range of contemporary and traditional kitchen styles and adds richness to a kitchen design, creating a jewel-box and atmospheric look.”
Olive & Barr, Handmade Shaker Kitchen Cabinetry starts from £10,000
THE DARK WOOD KITCHEN
“The wood kitchen became increasingly popular over the last year, with homeowners embracing an all-wood kitchen design, with a serene and minimalist look. While wood remains a key trend for 2025, we see tastes shift to a more authentic and richer aesthetic, as homeowners embrace darkly stained wood, in rich chocolatey tones. Not reserved for those living in period homes, dark wood compliments a host of kitchen designs and colours and can be integrated through cabinetry, worktops, freestanding islands or dining tables with ease, adding texture and old-meets-new character in abundance.”
A ‘MOMENT’ FOR COFFEE
“The ‘at-home’ coffee shop experience has proven to be more than a fleeting trend, as we see homeowners continue to invest in state-of-the-art coffee machines. From dedicated pantries to specially designed nooks - the hot drinks station is here to stay. With this comes the demand for bespoke shelving and cabinetry to display barista tools, coffee mugs and accessories. Having a dedicated area to make and enjoy your favourite hot drink has become top of the wish list in kitchen design, for caffeine enthusiasts and those who love to host and impress guests, providing loved ones with a special café-style experience.”
THE GIFT FOR A GREEN SPRING
As we head towards spring, the thoughts of our nation of gardeners are turning to the multitude of jobs that will suddenly escalate when the days begin to lengthen.
One of the most fun parts for these enthusiasts is the new season planting, but one thing in particular threatens to kill that joy with a powerful munch of its jaws: the dreaded slug and it’s rather more attractive but no less destructive cousin, the snail. Whist any gardener knows there is a voracious menagerie of pests lying in wait for those tender green shoots, slugs are a bane like no other. Hiding under rocks and at the sides of wooden borders, burrowing into soil, climbing up fenceposts, parachuting through netting like the SAS the moment your back is turned, leaving a trail of slime in their wake, these critters have two questions and one mission:
• Is there food?
• Am I hungry?
If the answer to these two questions is ‘yes’, we all know what the mission looks like: decimated leaves, shoots and bitten off before they’re barely out of the ground, flower buds felled, stems covered in sticky slime and gardeners re-addressing the existential crisis which confronts them every growing season:
• Is it all worth it?!
The Green alternative that’s also great for gifting
For those amateur gardeners who are keen to keep things green on their plot, without resorting to harmful chemicals or slug pellets which can endanger birds, these beautiful Copper Plant Rings from Copper & Green are the solution to their woes.
Handmade in Britain by a specialist team of artisans, without the use of power tools or machinery, this environmentally friendly solution isn’t just an effective deterrent against slugs and snails, it also makes the perfect gift for the gardener in your life. Anyone who is proud of their home-grown vegetables, fruits and flowers would be delighted to receive them, with Mother’s Day, Easter, Father’s Day and spring birthdays being especially good opportunities for giving the gift of sustainable slug-free gardening.
Choose from two sizes to best suit your planting scheme, 9cm or 14cm, priced at £6.00 and £9.00 respectively. 9cm designs are also available as a pack of four, priced at £22.00, whilst a triple set of 14cm Copper Plant Rings can be purchased for £25.00. About Copper & Greens Copper Plant Rings
Non-toxic and safe for wildlife
Copper rings act as a natural physical barrier, repelling slugs through a mild electric charge when they come into contact with the copper. Unlike chemical
slug killers, which often contain harmful substances like metaldehyde or ferric phosphate, copper rings do not pose a risk to non-target species such as hedgehogs, birds, or domestic pets.
Sustainable and reusable
Copper rings are a one-time investment. Their durability means they can be reused for years to come, providing lifetime protection without the need for repeated purchases. In contrast, chemical treatments must be frequently reapplied, especially after rain, leading to a continuous cycle of expense and waste.
Environmentally friendly
Unlike chemical slug killers, which can leach into the soil and potentially disrupt the ecosystem, copper slug rings do not introduce any harmful chemicals into the environment. They help maintain soil health and protect essential microbes, making them ideal for organic gardening practices.
Targeted protection for precious plants
Copper plant rings offer focused protection around individual plants, particularly valuable or vulnerable crops. This precision-based method prevents indiscriminate harm to beneficial insects and non-pest species that chemical treatments might impact.
No resistance issues
Unlike certain chemical treatments to which slugs can develop resistance over time, copper is consistently effective. Its physical properties remain unchanged, making it a reliable and long-term deterrent without diminishing results.
Ideal for Gifting
Handmade in Britain with the exceptional quality you would expect of artisan goods produced in copper, the Copper Plant Rings are highly desirable products for gardeners that make them ideal gifts for loved ones.
Colours That Create Joy in Your Home
Your home’s colour palette has the power to transform your space and uplift your mood.
Leah Aspinall, Head of Design from Blinds 2go, the UK’s leading online retailer for made-to-measure blinds and curtains and a proud Nottingham-based business, has uncovered the perfect palette to inspire happiness and uplift your home –with some surprising recommendations!
Sunshine Yellow
Leah Aspinall, Head of Design at Blinds 2go said: “Naturally, yellow is one of the most joy-evoking colours there is. Associated with sunlight and actually proven to release serotonin in our brains – it’s no wonder that a home

“For those who are happy to experiential with colour, dotting yellow around home, especially near sources of light to really amplify its presence. This could be through yellow
“Associated with the serenity of the sky and the ocean, blue brings about peace and calm; and is also an incredibly versatile and popular home colour choice. Many opt for blue as one of the main colours in their pallete due to its adaptability. Be it a bedroom, bathroom, or kitchen – this is a neutral tone sure to suit any décor, whilst still evoking all the right emotions your sanctuary should.”
China Blue
“You might think blue is the colour of sadness, right? That’s a common misconception when it comes to home décor. If you’re someone who values calmness and tranquillity – then blue is going to bring you the most happiness.” says Leah.
“I would recommend using blue in a room where you wish to feel at peace – this could be your bedroom or living room, or even kitchen! Wherever you feel is your happy place. Blue is unassuming enough to be used as a primary colour on walls or in tiles, and in soft furnishings and window dressings. If you prefer a more muted approach then why not start bringing blue décor into your space with a lovely, patterned cushion or decorative vases and other ornaments?”
Vivid Orange
Leah Aspinall said: “Associated with warmth and positivity, orange radiates good energy throughout your home when you opt to include it in your home décor. The new year is the ideal
opportunity to embrace how your surroundings can uplift your mood and to boldly experiment with colours. Orange may seem like a bold choice but can be beautifully versatile and tasteful.”
“Vivid and luxurious, orange works well on its own as a standalone décor choice. However, it also pairs beautifully with emerald green and navy blue for a chic, classic style. Try it and see how it helps lift your mood at home!”
Pretty Pink
“Thanks in no small part to the release of Wicked – pink is all the rage. That’s perfect because it’s a great colour choice in the home, associated with calmness and contentment, this is an excellent option for any rooms you like to wind down in.”
“Soft pastel pinks work great as base colours in the home, and pair well with complimenting neutrals such as beige and grey – but also more striking colours like emerald green. Or, if you feel ready to make a change this year and invigorate your home – a shocking cerise or coral is
happiness and joy”
Leah Aspinall says.
Periwinkle
“Previously a Pantone Colour of the Year (Veri Peri), periwinkle is a shade of purple singled out as being one of the best mood boosters in the palette. Its soft tones can evoke feelings of calmness and serenity – all of which result in
“I love this colour in bedrooms and think it is complemented well with muted blues and greens – but it’s such a surprisingly adaptable colour, that it can fit well anywhere in your home and start bringing about that positive energy. This is the perfect colour to try out on your walls or with panelling – or, if you want to start smaller, consider a periwinkle patterned roman blind or wall art.”

Guide To Achieving Rustic Style
When looking to create a home that feels like it has been lived in and loved for generations, taking inspiration from farmhouse style interiors is a step in the right direction.
Brimming with distinctive character, rustic charm, and timeless details, it's no wonder that the aesthetic is leading the interior space. To help approach the well known style, Natalie Mudd, Creative Director & Co-Founder of Knot & Grain, shares key design elements to look out for and incorporate into your home.
Modern Or Country
"Whatever style of property you own, the farmhouse style can be achieved in both new-builds or charming country cottages. The key is creating the perfect balance between classic and contemporary. Typically an aged wooden floor look
and décor enthusiasts. If you're looking to create a cosy, lived-in look, it's important to choose the right flooring.
appearance of wood that has endured years of exposure to the weather. Typically, the wood used to make flooring has been salvaged and reused from entirely other settings. Whether you are doing a small update or a big renovation project, opting for weathered wood is a sustainable and economical way of finishing a renovation or construction project.
Alternatively, you can now opt for engineered wood flooring with a handcrafted finish to mimic the effect of a weathered floor. This can be a more practical and robust wood flooring option – check out our Heritage planks for inspiration."

Wooden Flooring
"Wood is a common element in farmhouse-styled interiors, offering warmth and character to any space. Due to the growing popularity of rustic design in our homes, farmhouse flooring has become one of the most sought-after styles among homeowners, designers,
Engineered wood flooring is an excellent choice for achieving a true country aesthetic in your home. Its durability and versatility make it ideal for spaces like kitchens, where solid wood might not be practical. Moreover, the multiple layers under its veneer surface make it highly stable; a long lasting and highly popular option for hardwood flooring."
Go For Classics
""Look no further than herringbone flooring, the conventional method or technique for putting parquet blocks. Traditionally made from smaller planks or wood, but now available in various sizes to create the recognisable "herringbone" zigzag pattern.
The classic style, often associated with country homes, blends a natural material look with additional visual intrigue. This can help a space to feel more dramatic and atmospheric without having to use overly ornate or daring furniture, carpets, artwork, or wall colours."
Heritage or Rustic?
"Weathered wood, sometimes referred to as aged or distressed wood, mimics the gritty texture and natural
"In the flooring industry, the word "rustic" refers to the wood grade of the floor plank. Within a rustic grade wood floor you will find natural knots, cracks, and colour variations that are part of wood’s charm and character. It’s this charm that makes rustic engineered wood flooring so popular, especially in farmhouse or country style interiors. Rustic grade wood can instantly add interest to a room to create a feeling of relaxation and warmth. If you want to have the perfect distressed wooden appearance in your home, rustic-grade engineered wood flooring is an ideal option. Look for softer, washed-out hues and organic, matte textures when selecting a floor in a rustic design."

OPPORTUNITY TO BEAT STAMP DUTY INCREASE
Nottinghamshire housebuilders Barratt and David Wilson Homes are advising househunters looking to move home in 2025 to consider doing it now to avoid the rise of Stamp Duty fees from April.
Currently, home buyers don’t have to pay the land tax on properties up to the value of £250,000. However, Stamp Duty will be introduced on properties worth more than £125,000 from 1st April 2025. Home buyers will then pay 2% on the portion between £125,000 and £250,000, and 5% on the portion between £250,001 and £925,000. This could be a significant increase for anyone taking the next step on the property ladder.
As noted on Gov.uk, Stamp Duty on a property worth £295,000 would see home buyers taxed £2,250 for the move if it’s completed on or before 31st March 2025. From 1st April 2025, the Stamp Duty on a property with the same value would be £4,750. Breaking this down further, Stamp Duty on a property worth £550,000 would increase from £15,000 to £17,500 after March, which might mean house hunters have to compromise on their dream home.
Terry Higgins, Group Managing Director at New Build Mortgage Services, said: “The upcoming changes to Stamp Duty in April 2025 could have a big impact on buyers. The temporary increases to thresholds that were put in place in September 2022 will come to an end impacting everyone planning to move, particularly those taking their first step on the property ladder or moving to a new home. For first-time buyers, the re-introduction of tax on properties over
£300,000 means they’ll need to budget for higher costs, which could make it harder to afford their ideal home.
“For existing homeowners and downsizers, the increased rates could mean paying thousands more in tax, especially in areas where property prices are higher. However, there’s still an opportunity to avoid these extra costs by completing a purchase before the changes come into effect on 1st April.
“Acting now could save buyers thousands, and it’s a great time to explore properties that are ready to move into ahead of the deadline. Seeking advice and planning carefully will ensure buyers make the most of the options available to them.”
To help anyone looking to make a move before the increase in Stamp Duty comes into effect, Barratt and David Wilson Homes have invited prospective buyers to visit their developments across Nottinghamshire to view the properties available to complete their move before April.
Martyn Parker, Sales Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes, said: “We encourage property seekers looking to make a move this year to visit our developments across Nottinghamshire to learn more about our properties that are ready to move into ahead of the Stamp Duty changes from 1st April.
“We don’t want anyone to have to compromise on their dream home and our Sales Advisers are on hand to discuss our offers available, some of which include Stamp Duty paid on selected properties.
“Our developments all have moving schemes and offers to make a move more affordable for our customers and we are ready to help prospective buyers take the first or next step on the property ladder in 2025.”
For anyone looking to make a move ahead of the Stamp Duty increase, the leading housebuilders are inviting would-be buyers to visit their websites at Barratt Homes in Nottinghamshire and David Wilson Homes in Nottinghamshire to learn more about the properties available.
For more information about the homes available across the county, call the Barratt Homes sales team on 033 3355 8472 or David Wilson Homes sales team on 033 3355 8473.

your dream
Wedding
The wedding venue sets the tone for your entire celebration. It’s the backdrop where memories will be made, photos will be taken, and where you’ll say "I do." With so many options available, from grand ballrooms to intimate garden spaces, finding the perfect venue can feel overwhelming. However, with a bit of planning and the right approach, you can find the place that aligns with your vision, style, and budget.
Your wedding venue should reflect the vibe you want to create. Whether you're dreaming of a grand, luxurious affair or a laidback, rustic gathering, the venue should match your overall vision for the day.
For classic and elegant venue consider a traditional ballroom, luxurious hotel, or a historical mansion with chandeliers and polished finishes. For a rustic and charming feel go for a barn, vineyard, or countryside property, which will offer a more natural, intimate atmosphere, with it's wooden beams and scenic landscapes.
If modern and chic is more your feel then urban venues like art galleries, rooftop spaces, or contemporary lofts work well for couples seeking a sleek, minimalist vibe. For a more romantic and whimsical venue try a garden, botanical garden, or beachside venue, where you can create a dreamy, fairy-tale atmosphere.
Budget is one of the most important factors when choosing a venue. Wedding venues can vary dramatically in cost, depending on location, size, and amenities. You’ll want to ensure that the venue aligns with your financial plans, and keep in mind that your venue cost may include more than just renting the space. Additional costs might include catering, staffing, furniture, and decor.
Location is another crucial factor. Think about how far your venue is from where most of your guests will
be traveling. A venue that’s easy to access and near major highways or airports is ideal, especially if you have out-of-town guests.
Before you fall in love with a venue, make sure it can accommodate the number of guests you plan to invite. Some venues may look expansive, but it’s essential to confirm that they’ll fit your guest list comfortably.
Confirm the maximum guest capacity and make sure the venue suits the size of your wedding. Don’t choose a venue that’s too small or too large for your guest list, as it may make the event feel cramped or empty.
Do you want your ceremony and reception indoors or outdoors? This choice can significantly influence your venue options, as some venues offer both indoor and outdoor spaces, while others specialize in one or the other. Indoor venues offer protection from unpredictable weather and typically have more control over temperature and lighting.
Outdoor venues, like garden spaces, beaches, or parks provide a beautiful, natural setting, but they come with risks (weather, insects, etc.). If you're leaning toward an outdoor setting, make sure there's an indoor backup option in case of bad weather.
Some venues book up well in advance, particularly popular ones. Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, check the availability of the venue for your desired date. If your date is flexible, you might have more options, but if you’re set on a specific time, you may need to be prepared to adjust or even compromise on the location. Book your venue as early as possible to secure your preferred date, particularly for peak wedding seasons.
The venue you choose will shape the entire feel of your wedding, so it’s important to take your time and choose wisely.
Education
SHAPING’ YOUNG MINDS
A Nottingham family business that set up an alternative education establishment for teens excluded from mainstream schooling is celebrating its first anniversary and its own success story.
Safe Haven Support Care & Education Group launched SHAPE (Safe Haven Alternative Provision of Excellence) on Alfreton Road in Radford, to improve the prospects of 13-16 year-olds who had been permanently excluded from school.
In Nottingham City, some 204 young people were permanently excluded from school in the academic year 2023/2024, according to internal data from Unity. Just a year later, the provision has doubled its staffing, achieved up to 95 per cent attendance from its pupils, and now has plans to expand its venture to a second Nottingham campus.
Shamraiz Younas, Group CEO of Safe Haven Support Care & Education Group, said: “Our success is really the success of the young people who engage with our teaching methods and commit to enhancing their own futures. Getting students back into the classroom and finding their pathway is our primary aim and our success marker.”
Shamraiz said that SHAPE students had excellent figures for 85 per cent attendance with some students achieving 95
per cent attendance. He attributed the success to the teaching staff’s engagement with the young people and teaching subjects that maximise their skill sets.
The Pearson-accredited centre teaches core subjects of Maths and English with pupils offered additional GCSEs and vocational courses including Science, Digital Media, Geography, Art and Design, as well as Life Skills and tutorials on topics such as living independently. It also works in partnership with Urban Spirits recording studio, giving creative students time in the Nottingham-based studio.
Louise Smith, Head of Provision, said: “We are so proud of our pupils and what they are achieving. We believe education is more than just lessons - it is about growth, creativity and unlocking potential.”
There are currently 33 students on the roll. The facility has the capacity to take 55 students from years 8 to 11 (Key Stage 3 and 4). Most students attend on a part-time basis, though SHAPE also has capacity for four full-time students.
Louise said: “Our students are achieving great things. One of our shining stars is pupil KJM. His passion for creating and learning embodies everything we strive
to cultivate in our students. Whether he’s freestyling raps, expressing himself through art, or excelling in group discussions, his energy is infectious, his confidence inspiring, and his social awareness unmatched.”
Shamraiz has plans to continue the organisation’s success and its expansion. The current campus in Alfreton Road includes classrooms, a Common Room and multi use space. Building on this solid base, a second Nottingham campus is expected to launch for the academic year 2025/2026.

TIME TO CONSIDER ALL GIRLS?
It’s that stressful time of year where parents are waiting to find out which school their child will be going to next year. There’s a lot to think about - location, facilities, pastoral support and of course the school’s results
If you have a daughter, maybe it’s time to consider an all girls education? Backed by years of experience and research, here at Nottingham Girls’ High School, we believe the benefits are compelling…
GIRLS THRIVE IN ALL GIRLS SCHOOLS
There are countless reasons why girls excel in an all-girls environment. They tend to achieve better grades, develop more confidence, and maintain a more positive outlook on life compared to their peers in co-ed schools.
FINDING HER VOICE
In an all-girls environment, students learn to speak up and speak out, even those who struggle with confidence. Research by the Girls’ Day School Trust 1 shows that girls are 93% more likely to participate in class discussions compared to when boys are present.
IN THE CLASSROOM
How many girls are asked to sit next to the naughty boys in class to keep them quiet? At NGHS, we believe a girl’s education shouldn’t suffer so her male peers can stay on track. And with much smaller class sizes, we can get to know and understand your child as
an individual, tailoring our teaching approach to best meet her needs.
BREAKING STEREOTYPES
Gender stereotypes are ingrained from as early as age 7 but in an all-female environment, young girls are more likely to break free from these stereotypes and enjoy “boys’” activities. At NGHS, this might include playing football and cricket, enjoying Physics and Technology, or applying for veterinary medicine or a pilot’s licence. In fact girls in single-sex schools are 75% more likely to study advanced science courses 2 and 60% more likely to pursue STEM careers 3
independent schools in the area – you may be pleasantly surprised.
ALL THIS FOR LESS THAN YOU THINK
The cost of independent school education has been in the news a lot recently, but it’s an investment in your daughter’s future that you’ll never regret. You’ll give her a head start as she develops lifelong confidence, opportunities, and friendships. Compare our fees to other

Care in the Community
420 years of dedication
Treetops
Hospice was filled with celebration this weekend as staff and volunteers gathered to recognise over 420 years of dedicated service honoured through the charity’s Long Service Awards.
50 staff and volunteers were presented with five and 10-year awards, and one extraspecial 25-year award was presented to volunteer gardener, Anne Hopkinson. Anne, 67, from Risley, said:
“It feels unbelievable to get this award really. I don’t know where the 25 years has gone. I’ve had lots of different roles and seen a lot of change here over the years. I’ve met some wonderful patients and staff here over the years and have many fond memories. I can’t walk anywhere locally without meeting someone I know through Treetops!
“I feel part of a family here at Treetops. Even when the weather’s bad, I still want to come and help. I’d encourage anyone to give volunteering a go!”
Wendy Williams, a 62-year-old Healthcare Assistant from Mickleover, also received her 10-year award. Wendy is part of the Treetops Wellbeing at Home team, providing care to local patients who prefer to remain at home during their final days.
“I really enjoy going out to support patients in their own home, where they are choosing to die, rather than in hospital.
“Just sitting and listening to someone is really important. Patients can find it hard to open up to their families about coming to the end of their life, so they have the chance to express their feelings to us.
“It doesn’t feel like I’ve been here ten years. It’s gone really quickly, but I suppose when
and volunteers
you really enjoy your job, you’re not counting the days or weeks or years.”

New Online Access to Treatment
Drug and alcohol treatment and support is now available online thanks to a successful addiction recovery service in Nottingham that is already helping 3,500 people each year
The Digital Doorway to Change is being offered by the Nottingham Recovery Network (NRN) to city residents coping with drug and alcohol addictions who need a more accessible service to fit around work, family or other commitments and would struggle to make appointments in person.
The new online offer is focused on individual needs with an intensive personalised recovery programme developed for each person.
With no waiting list, those in need of support can get started on their recovery journey straight away after an initial assessment to confirm eligibility. Participants in the online programme will be given a key worker, flexible one-to-one sessions for as long as is needed, and access to
group sessions running in six weekly cycles. The Digital Doorway to Change has been designed to be flexible with a mix of online resources, optional weekly group sessions and 1-to-1 appointments arranged to fit around busy schedules making it easier for more people to get the help they need to succeed on their recovery journey.
The new offer is being delivered by the experienced staff of Nottingham Recovery Network – a partnership led by Framework and comprising Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Double Impact and Al-Hurraya. The service complements the face-to-face service already delivered by the partners at the Wellbeing Hub on Houndsgate off Nottingham’s Maid Marian Way.
Service user Bobby had a serious cannabis addiction contributing to severe mental health episodes and a suicide attempt when he was referred to the Nottingham Recovery Network. He credits the service for helping him to get free of his addiction and get his life back on track.
Bobby said: “The main thing is just to turn up and be honest with yourself. I did every course going as I wanted a structured approach. Whatever you’re dealing with, you have to analyse yourself and don’t go in half measures. Be open to learning and let things happen. It takes time but hang in there.”
Framework's Director of Health and Social Care, Apollos Clifton-Brown, said: “The online support offered by Nottingham Recovery Network through its new Digital Doorway to Change programme will enable more people to access the help and treatment they need to address issues with drugs and alcohol.
"In partnership with the Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, Double Impact and AlHurraya, our goal is to make drug and alcohol treatment as accessible as possible for all the people of Nottingham.
"Digital Doorway to Change has been designed to break down the barriers when accessing treatment services."
Each person using the online offer will be given access to a platform where they can find
A Positive Outcome
Natural burial grounds in the UK are an increasingly popular choice for those seeking an environmentally friendly and more personal alternative to traditional burial methods
These burial grounds are often set in natural landscapes, such as woodlands, meadows, or fields, and offer a simpler, more eco-conscious approach to death care. Below are some of the key advantages of choosing a natural burial ground.
Environmental Benefits
One of the most significant advantages of natural burial grounds is their minimal environmental impact. Unlike traditional cemeteries, which often involve embalming chemicals, concrete vaults, and nonbiodegradable caskets, natural burials use biodegradable materials like wood, wicker, or cardboard for coffins. This allows the body to decompose naturally and return to the earth. This method avoids the long-lasting environmental damage caused by embalming fluids and helps conserve land by creating green spaces that are often used for
conservation or habitat restoration.
Aesthetic and Peaceful Setting
Natural burial grounds are typically located in serene and beautiful locations, such as forests, meadows, or wildflower meadows. These peaceful and tranquil settings can provide comfort and solace to the grieving families. The natural surroundings offer a unique and calming experience, promoting a sense of connection to nature. For many, the idea of resting in a place where wildlife thrives and where the landscape is maintained with care is a meaningful and spiritual choice.
Lower Carbon Footprint
Natural burials generate a smaller carbon footprint compared to traditional burials. This is due to the use of eco-friendly materials, the absence of cremation (which can produce harmful emissions), and
the preservation of natural landscapes. Choosing a natural burial helps reduce the environmental harm associated with traditional burial practices and cremation, which can be energyintensive.
Personal and Meaningful Memorials
In natural burial grounds, gravestones are often replaced with more natural markers, such as trees, shrubs, or wildflowers. These living memorials can serve as a lasting tribute while also contributing to the local ecosystem. Families can often plant a tree or wildflowers to mark a loved one's grave, allowing them to create a
unique, personal memorial that reflects the individual’s life and values.
Cost-Effective
In many cases, natural burials can be less expensive than traditional burials. The lack of costly caskets, embalming services, and grave markers can make natural burials a more affordable option. Moreover, many natural burial
grounds are not governed by the same regulations as conventional cemeteries, which often leads to lower maintenance costs and fees.
In summary, natural burial grounds in the UK offer a number of advantages, including environmental sustainability, aesthetic beauty, personal meaning, and affordability.
As more people seek eco-friendly and personalized options for their end-of-life plans, natural burial grounds are becoming an increasingly appealing choice
HOLLYGATE MEMORIAL WOODLANDS
A.M. Buckingham Independent
Family Funeral Services began in Cotgrave in 2008 when owner Tony Buckingham established Cotgrave & District Funeral Services. Since then, they have enjoyed a growing reputation for excellent service and competitive pricing. To enhance their service capacity we have opened branches in Clifton, Carlton and now Bingham, to allow us to serve the wider Nottinghamshire and surrounding areas.
We can arrange all aspects of a funeral and offers each type of service from direct cremation to bespoke funeral services. Each branch is staffed by empathetic and understanding people who will listen to your requirements and help with every aspect of the funeral arrangements. Each branch has a private arranging room and chapel of rest.
We can also offer a dark blue hearse and two matching 7 seat limousines, allowing family members to travel together to the funeral service. Our staff are always on hand to help and advice with all your funeral arrangements.
We solely manage and maintain Hollygate memorial woodlands, situated on Hollygate Lane to the north east of Cotgrave. The woods were planted in 2011 as a conservation woodland to promote the
conservation and reintroduction of birds into this area by planting a variety of native broadleaved species. The planting is naturalistic with open unplanted rides giving access to the 5 separate woods and spinnies. There is an active management scheme in place to help with the establishment of the trees. The company are actively planting more species such as pollen rich plants in the open ride areas to enhance insect life to further encourage all types of bird. Some areas will be left more natural to further help the insects and small animals.
There is a water source at the bottom of the woods, the Grantham canal, which has a large population of amphibious creatures and water based insects to further enhance the wildlife populations. We offer you the opportunity to choose a specific tree and have it as your own growing memorial to the departed loved one. The woods are private but by leasing a tree you also have the right to enter any time and walk or sit in the quiet of the woodlands.
There are many species of trees and shrubs that you can choose as a living memorial for your loved one, including mighty Oaks, flowering Cherry, Ash, Willow, Silver Birch and fruiting Hawthorne or festive Holly. Alternatively, you can choose a family plot where up to 6 cremated remains can be interred around a single tree. We also have supplies of native woodland plants, sourced from sustainable sites, that can be planted around the memorial sites.
Alternatively, we do offer full burial plots if cremation is not an option for you. We can supply coffins, caskets, urns and pouches made from natural and biodegradable materials for the interment of remains, to ensure the woodlands continue to develop into a natural environment.
Please feel free to contact any of our offices below for more information.

Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace.
At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.
The Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few. Conversely, their ashes can be buried or sub-surface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground.
A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush.
Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and
their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since opening in 2011, inviting families of the buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities.
The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending.
Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment.
Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”
Get Active From Your Consistency is key
(SIT ON FITNESS APPARATUS)
Bill Bailey on keeping moving and growing older: The multi-talented comedian and exercise enthusiast discusses his new workout video with 'We Are Undefeatable' to help people with long-term health conditions get more active.
“There are so many people for whom the idea of exercise and physical activity is quite daunting. Something like 16 million people in Britain are living with long-term health conditions, of which I am one – I’ve been living with asthma since childhood. So, I know full well what it’s like to feel a bit worried about taking on physical activity. You might think, ‘is this going to exacerbate my condition? Am I going to get breathless? Will I be able to carry on with this?’. It can really dent your confidence and can become an obstacle. Some people might also find that they’ve lost a bit of strength because of their health condition.
For example, Tania, who features in one of the workout videos, has just come through treatment for cancer. She’s been in hospital for a while, which has meant she hasn’t been able to use her muscles as much, but she said that this workout has been a great way for her to get back into being more active.
The other thing is that with so many long-term health conditions, whether it’s Parkinson’s or arthritis, you have good days and bad days. Days where you feel like you want to do something and days where you don’t.”
What’s key with this campaign is that the exercises are primarily tailored to people who are finding it difficult to engage in any activity, but the workout’s something we can all benefit from. It’s a very achievable, sustainable set of exercises – and there’s no need to feel like you can’t get involved, because you can get involved from your own sofa! And let’s be honest, for the vast majority of us, the sofa is our happy place. But it’s also a bit of fitness apparatus! Who knew?”
