Byron’s Final Journey Exhibition

The exhibition Byron’s Final Journey: From Greece to Hucknall is now open at Nottingham Central Library. Celebrating the extraordinary life and legacy of Lord George Gordon Byron, one of history’s most influential Romantic poets, the exhibition offers a fascinating insight into his multifaceted identity as a poet, freedom fighter, and cultural icon.

Visitors are invited to explore the story of Byron’s final days in Greece, his death in 1824, and the journey of his body back to England, culminating in his burial at St Mary’s Church in Hucknall. The exhibition showcases rare materials and images from the Nottingham Local Studies collection, accompanied by artefacts and books that illustrate Byron’s lasting impact on Nottinghamshire and beyond. The exhibition is hosted on the first floor of Nottingham Central Library and will be open until May 2025 during library opening hours.

Admission is free.

Cllr Sam Lux, Executive Member for Carbon Reduction, Leisure and Culture, comments: "This remarkable exhibition offers a unique insight into Lord Byron’s profound connection to Nottinghamshire, exploring his journey from Greece to his final resting place in Hucknall. Byron’s legacy continues to inspire and captivate audiences globally. Nottingham City Libraries’ Local Studies collection preserves and showcases our region’s rich cultural heritage, making these stories accessible for future generations to discover and enjoy."

The library’s Local Studies service complements this exhibition by providing an invaluable resource for those interested in Nottingham’s rich history. Offering access to books, periodicals, maps, photographs, newspapers, and family history tools, the service supports students, researchers, and history enthusiasts in uncovering Nottinghamshire’s past. Whether tracing family roots, exploring industrial or cultural milestones, or learning about iconic figures like Byron, Local Studies provides a gateway to the city’s heritage.

This exhibition forms the final instalment of Byron 200, a year-long programme of exhibitions, events, and activities across the city, marking 200 years since Byron’s death in April 1824.

Organised in collaboration with Nottingham City Council’s Newstead Abbey, the University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University, Nottingham City of Literature, and Visit Nottinghamshire, Byron 200 celebrates Byron’s sensational life and his enduring cultural legacy.

Smokey returns after

Smokey, an 11-year-old cat from Jacksdale,in Nottinghamshirewho went missing a decade ago, has been reunited with his owner thanks to his microchip.

Sam Hope, aged 53, had adopted Smokey from a rescue centre when he was a year old, but sadly, just six months later, he disappeared and remained missing for a decade. Despite searching and hoping for a reunion, Sam heard nothing until this month, when he received an unexpected call saying that Smokey had been found.

A local woman had found Smokey and took him to the vet, where his microchip, which was registered with lost and found database, Petlog, was scanned to reveal Sam’s details, and the pair were reunited, 10 years since Smokey first disappeared.

“I was so sad when I lost him,” Sam said. “When I received the call, I was overjoyed to know he was okay. I’d just started thinking about getting another cat after my other cats passed away, so this feels like it was meant to be.”

Now adjusting to indoor life with Sam, Smokey is safe and settling back into a

quiet home. “He’s doing okay,” Sam shared. “He sleeps a lot and is still very shy, but I’m confident that being just the two of us will help him come out of his shell. He deserves to feel secure and loved.”

Petlog spokesperson, Bill Lambert commented: “We are delighted that Smokey has been reunited with Sam after so many years. Microchipping is a simple but important way to give pets the best chance of being reunited with their owners if they go missing, and we urge everyone to keep their contact information up to date with a microchipping database like Petlog.”

A microchip, the size of a grain of rice, is placed under the skin at the back of the animal’s neck. It links pets to their owners’ contact details, held on databases like Petlog, allowing vets, local authorities, and animal charities to

scan the chip and match it to the owner. Microchipping is effective in reunited lost and found pets with their families only when owners’ contact details are up to date.

get closer to nature with 12 days wild

12 Days Wild is Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trusts’ festive challenge which takes place from 25th December to 5th January. The idea is to do one wild thing every day or night… are you up for the challenge?

Simply sign up here and you’ll receive daily inspirational emails packed with fun ideas to help you embrace winter walks in nature or the magic of nighttime star gazing – to lift your mood and much more!

You could:

• Track animals by looking for footprints in the mud or snow

• Go star gazing on a clear night

• Go winter wildlife watching on a walk at a nature reserve

• Or even volunteer at a nature reserve – nature will appreciate it

• Make a New Year’s resolution to help nature. What will you do in 2025?

BBC TV presenter and Wildlife Trust Vice President Iolo Williams, shares his love of winter wildlife. He says: “From dawn to dusk, winter wildlife is busy all around us. Otters are always up early and if you see a trail of bubbles in the water, you’ll know they’ve spotted you first. Night-hunting barn owls venture out on cold winter days to find extra food and will woosh past you in the winter sun. Then, at dusk, starlings gather in the sky forming ever-shifting shapes and patterns known as murmurations. There are so many wildlife adventures to be had during 12 Days Wild – I hope you enjoy them.”

Rachel Rutherford, Senior Communications and Marketing Officer at Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust stated, "12 Days wild is a great opportunity to get a blast of fresh air with friends and family over the festive season and I will be looking out for the unusual and unexpected when out and about in my local green spaces. You just never know what you can experience when you open your mind to it. From the micro fungi to the unexpected wildlife encounters to simple things like a bug hunt or spotting animal tracks. I may even get the hammock out in the back garden - usually only a hot summers day experience! However, if coupled with hot drinks and wrapping up well with blankets, star gazing on a fine evening is on my list to do this year."

Spending time in nature – night or day – is proven to help people feel happier and healthier. A Wildlife Trusts’ survey found that participants

‘Mining for Stories’ Exhibition Digs Deep into Local Heritage of Mining Communities

The rich history of the local mining communities in Ollerton, Edwinstowe, and Bilsthorpe is set to be celebrated in a unique travelling heritage exhibition.

‘Mining for Stories’ offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, featuring interviews with ex-miners and members of the mining community, providing an authentic narrative of Newark and Sherwood’s industrial heritage.

A collection of photographs from the extensive museum archive will be showcased, alongside a community crafted artwork which was created during the Our Heritage Textile Photograph workshop at Edwinstowe Library. This artwork is a collaborative effort with the local Knit and Natter group and local people from the surrounding area.

‘Mining for Stories’ delves into the era of mining in the 1980s, a significant period for the local communities, and will tour up to three district venues, beginning its journey at Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum from Wednesday 27 November 2024 to Monday 13 January 2025, before

moving to Edwinstowe Library where it will be on display from Tuesday 14 January 2025 to Saturday 22 February 2025.

Cris Cooper, Manager at Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum, said: “It has been great working on Newark and Sherwood’s Mining for Stories Project. Our volunteers feel that their hard work looking after our collection is being appreciated and valued and it has been a huge boost to morale.”

Volunteers have played a crucial role in bringing this exhibition to life, generously sharing their time and stories. A consultation earlier this month provided curators with additional information about the images in the collection, allowing for the identification of individuals and locations in photographs that were previously unknown.

Councillor Rowan Cozens, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Heritage, Culture and the Arts at Newark and Sherwood District Council, expressed her enthusiasm for the exhibition, stating: “‘Mining for Stories’ is a

remarkable tribute to the resilience and camaraderie of our mining communities.

“It’s a celebration of our shared heritage and an opportunity for residents and visitors alike to engage with the stories that have shaped our district. We are proud to support this exhibition and the Open Doors programme, which continues to enrich the cultural landscape of Newark and Sherwood.”

‘Mining for Stories’ is part of Open Doors, a three-year programme of events organised by Newark and Sherwood District Council and funded by Arts Council England. The programme aims to increase creative opportunities for young people and under-served groups, establishing a cultural focal point across Newark and Sherwood.

This exhibition stands as a powerful tribute to the lasting impact of the mining communities and their profound role in shaping the region’s history. It offers visitors a chance to journey back in time and immerse themselves in the narratives that influenced the lives of so many in Newark and Sherwood.

Top tips for the perfect Christmas meal

Banish parched turkey and sad roast potatoes for ever with The Fat Duck creator’s secrets to festive culinary success

Soggy vegetables and burnt turkeys are among the most likely Christmas disasters* for cooks as they prepare what is for many the most important meal of the year. This festive season you can avoid such mishaps by following Heston Blumenthal OBE’s top ten tips for the perfect Christmas lunch or dinner.

Heston, who founded the three-Michelinstar The Fat Duck, the two-Michelin-star Dinner by Heston Blumenthal in London, and the one-Michelin-starred Hinds Head in Bray and Dinner by Heston Blumenthal in Dubai, is famous for his groundbreaking and innovative dishes such as Snail Porridge, Egg & Bacon Ice Cream and White Chocolate & Caviar.

But he’s just as passionate about taking comfort classics to incredible levels of perfection. Before he had even opened his first restaurant, he invented the Triplecooked Chip, which has since become a global phenomenon. He’s applied the same technique to roast potatoes to create the Triple-cooked Roastie, which forms the key part of the ‘Roast Turkey and all the Trimmings’ Christmas offering at his Hinds Head pub in Bray.

You could, then, give yourself the present of a Christmas meal at the Hinds Head and save yourself the trouble of cooking altogether. But, if you’re keen to get in the kitchen this Christmas, Heston has plenty of hints and tips to help make it a magical meal.

BRINE YOUR TURKEY

“For a beautifully moist bird, brine your turkey in an 8% salt solution overnight. Then wash it for about 15 minutes before the start of cooking and you’re good to go. You can also add all sorts of aromatics to the brining liquid to add fragrance and depth of flavour.”

SPUDS ARE SPECIAL

“For me – and I suspect most of us – in the end it’s all about the potatoes. That’s the bit we love the most. So, get the roasties right and everybody’s happy. We serve roasts with Triple-cooked Roasties in my restaurants Dinner and the Hinds Head, and the process is run on Potato Time – by which I mean everything is structured around the time it takes to prep and cook the potatoes. Why not do the same thing at home? You take the meat out of the oven to let it rest, and then, when you put your potatoes into the oven or deep-fat fryer, set your timer and that’s your target for having everything ready to serve.”

MORE IS MORE

“Make more potatoes than you think you need. As I said, it’s all about the roasties.”

THE PERFECT POTATO TECHNIQUE

“There are a few key tricks to cooking a potato to what, for me, is the perfect texture – crisply crunchy on the outside and fluffy within. The first stage of cooking is crucial: cut the potatoes so they have plenty of pointy edges and simmer them in generously salted water until almost falling apart. (You need to watch them keenly to make sure you don’t end up with a spud mush.) Then let them cool completely so they firm up. This ensures the potatoes can catch fat in the surface crannies and crevices, which is what gives that delicious crispiness. At the Hinds Head and Dinner, we then deep-fry the potatoes at 130C for 16-18 minutes, then chill them (which can be done a day in advance) and then fry at 190C to produce my Triple-cooked Roasties – which are out of this world.”

FLOURY NOT WAXY

“For roast potatoes, you want a floury potato not a waxy one. Maris Piper works and is readily available.”

TECH IS YOUR FRIEND

“One of the keys things you’re tackling with the Christmas roast is temperature. Invest in an oven thermometer and a digital probe (neither of which is expensive or complicated to use) and you take the guesswork out of whether you’re cooking at the right temperature (there’s often a great variance between what temperature your oven says it’s at, and what it’s actually at) and whether or not your bird is exactly ready – as in, cooked to deliciousness and not at all dry.”

GET THE GRAVY DONE IN ADVANCE

“Before the 25th, make a sizeable batch of gravy stock and freeze it so you’ve got

the basis of your gravy ready to go, which means one less prep job on the day. Then you can top it up with the roasting juices from the meat for real depth of flavour.”

NON-MEAT-EATERS CAN EAT WELL TOO

“At Dinner we serve a beautifully caramelised roast cauliflower. Why not give that a go? Roast cauli is relatively straightforward – after all, you’ve already got plenty to do so don’t overcomplicate your dietary alternatives – but it’s incredibly tasty.”

THE SECRET WITH SPROUTS

“Here’s my tip for superb sprouts. Slice the bases off the Brussels sprouts and separate the leaves. Fry some bacon lardons, then remove them and add butter to the pan and, once it’s foaming, add the sprout leaves, stir, add a little water and then cover and cook for five minutes or so. Stir in the lardons and season. It might seem like a faff but separating the leaves means the sprouts get evenly cooked and have no nasty boiled-+

DON’T FORGET TO HAVE FUN

“Don’t get so bound up in getting it right that the cooking becomes a challenge and a chore. Christmas is about getting together and having fun. Food can be a wonderful part of that but it’s not the be-all-and-end-all. Have a drink, round up some helpers – do whatever it takes to make the Christmas cook part of the fun of the day. My tips should help but, if something does go wrong – at least you’ll all have something to laugh about and talk about in years to come!”

TAQUERO

From the team behind Bar Iberico, the Mexican Taqueria brings a taste of Central America to Nottingham

The Northerner has been following Taquero on social media for over a year, hoping Nottingham gets a Mexican restaurant that rivals those in his home city. We are under serviced in Nottingham for Mexican cuisine but as it’s never been my favourite I was ambivalent to the gap.

Matching the reservation policy of its sister restaurant; Bar Iberico, it is ‘walk ins’ only so I approached our visit with some strategy. We needed to go early enough to miss the crowds but not too early that we’d be in meal time no man’s land and an empty restaurant. We walked in at 17.30 and were seated straight away, 20 minutes later they were queues for a table. To say I was chuffed was an understatement. I felt like doing a footballer style celebration as we walked to our table.

The dining rooms high ceilings are inescapably grand and there’s an uneasy juxtaposition between the building and the decor. The interior design theme of simple modern colours, concrete floor and lightweight seating match the menu but don’t live up to the promise of the building. A little voice in the back of my head thought this restaurant could have been in any of the more modern buildings and this building should have been saved for something ‘grander’, before chastising myself that open restaurants and used buildings are what this city needs.

We decided to go taco heavy and after reading a review from Jules at The Nottingham Food Guide, I included the fish taco as it was her favourite. We had 5 taco dishes (Al Pastor – Pork, Lamb Barbacoa, Beef Birria,

I like eating out, trying new restaurants and being on the receiving end of great hospitality. I am a mum with 2 children (one baby, one 9 year old) so I include how the places I visit work for families. I have worked in bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs for most of my life. Good places should be supported, celebrated and shared.

FOOD CRITIC

Chicken Pilbil and Baja – Fish), the Esquites side (a corn dish) and the Tuna Tostades.

The fish taco was excellent, light and spicy with delicately fried fish providing texture. The pork was another highlight as the coriander and pineapple salsa cut through the richness of the meat.

The beef taco was fried with crispy cheese laced around the edges giving it a welcome difference in texture and flavour, with a delicate consomme to dip if you needed more flavour/juice.

The sweetcorn side dish was a perfect partner to the tacos and we forked mouthfuls of its salty, cheesy, charred corn happily. The Northerner was smiling, he ranked the tacos in order and sipped his margherita contentedly.

The lamb missed the mark slightly, it was being compared to the other meat dishes so it had stiff competition.

The Tuna Tostada over promised and under delivered, the overiding flavour being sesame and we didn’t finish them all. I always hope when plates come back to the kitchen someone is noticing which come back clean and which don’t. Perhaps a lot to ask but I’ve worked in restaurants where it was a more honest part of the feedback process.

As the room filled up the restaurant felt vibrant, people ordered with excitement. A rare sight on a drizzly January evening and a reminder that new restaurants come with a sparkle that lasts about 6 months and should be celebrated.

Taquero worked really well for us dining as a couple but I can imagine an odd number of diners may encounter a challenge as all taco dishes are served with 2 portions and they aren’t easy to split into a larger multiple. After 5 taco dishes I was covered in food, the tacos aren’t dry but as a result I had taco ‘juice’ all over the table, my plate and my hands. A finger bowl (some ideas from the

1980’s are worth a renaissance) would be awesome or more napkins.

Taquero hasn’t changed my mind about Mexican food but I’d happily go back, it’s almost a certainty given the enthusiasm from The Northerner. It is a great addition to the city centre restaurants and a welcome piece of Central America in Nottingham

Family – there isn’t a childs menu at Taquero and the loos are downstairs, our host was really accomodating with our massive pram when we visited but save this one for a get together without kids or date night.

Transform Your Christmas Dinner Leftovers...

The Christmas dinner may be over, but the joy of festive food doesn't have to end when the plates are cleared. In fact, one of the best parts of the holiday season is turning those Christmas dinner leftovers into something even more delicious. One idea that will take your leftovers from good to great? Transforming them into mouth watering festive pies.

Whether you're using turkey, ham, or even a vegetarian roast, pies are a fantastic way to repurpose your Christmas meal and create comforting, flavour-packed dishes. Plus, pies are easy to make, freeze well, and are perfect for a cosy lunch, a casual dinner, or even a Boxing Day treat. So, let’s dive into how you can turn your Christmas leftovers into amazing festive pies.

Classic Turkey & Cranberry Pie

What better way to use up leftover turkey than in a rich and hearty pie, with the added tang of cranberry sauce? The sweet and tart cranberries perfectly balance the savoury turkey, creating a satisfying filling.

INGREDIENTS:

• Leftover turkey (shredded or chopped)

• Leftover stuffing (optional, but adds great texture)

• Cranberry sauce

• Gravy or leftover turkey stock

• Frozen or homemade puff pastry

• Fresh thyme or sage (optional)

• Salt and pepper to taste

METHOD:

1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan)/400°F.

2. In a large bowl, combine the turkey, a generous dollop of cranberry sauce, a spoonful of gravy, and any leftover stuffing. Stir in a little turkey stock to moisten the mixture, then season with salt, pepper, and fresh herbs if using.

3. Roll out your pastry on a floured surface and line a pie dish or individual pie tins with one sheet. Spoon in your turkey filling.

4. Top with a second layer of pastry, sealing the edges. Use a fork to crimp the sides, and make a few slits on top to allow steam to escape.

5. Brush the top with a little egg wash (beaten egg) for a golden finish.

6. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and the filling is piping hot.

This simple pie recipe brings together all the flavours of Christmas dinner in every bite. Pair with a side of Brussels sprouts or roast vegetables for the ultimate festive meal.

Boxing Day Shepherd’s Pie

A Boxing Day shepherd’s pie made with leftover roast lamb is an excellent and hearty way to enjoy your leftovers. Swap the usual minced lamb for finely chopped leftover roast lamb and layer it with creamy mashed potatoes for a comforting dish.

INGREDIENTS:

• Leftover lamb (shredded or chopped)

• Leftover vegetables (carrots, peas, onions, etc.)

• 1 tablespoon flour

• 200ml gravy (or beef stock)

• 500g mashed potatoes (leftover, if possible)

• Fresh mint (optional

METHOD:

1. Preheat your oven to 190°C (170°C fan)/375°F.

2. In a pan, heat some oil and sauté any leftover vegetables. Stir in the flour, then slowly add the gravy or stock to create a thick sauce. Add the lamb and cook for a few more minutes, seasoning to taste.

3. Transfer the mixture into an ovenproof dish, then spread the leftover mashed potatoes on top.

4. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes, until the top is golden and crispy. This version of shepherd's pie is the ultimate comfort food and a brilliant way to use up lamb from your Christmas feast.

Vegetarian Christmas Pie

For those with vegetarian leftovers, a festive veggie pie can be just as satisfying. Roasted vegetables, such as carrots, parsnips, and Brussels sprouts, combined with cheese and a creamy sauce, make for a delicious and hearty filling.

INGREDIENTS:

• Leftover roasted vegetables (carrots, parsnips, sprouts, etc.)

• 150g cheese (cheddar or stilton work well)

• 200ml vegetable stock

• 100ml double cream

• 1 tablespoon flour (for thickening)

• fresh herbs (rosemary, thyme, or sage)

• frozen puff or shortcrust pastry

METHOD:

1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan)/400°F.

1. In a pan, melt a little butter and stir in the flour to create a roux. Slowly whisk in the vegetable stock and cream until you have a smooth sauce. Season to taste with salt, pepper, and fresh herbs.

2. Add the leftover roasted vegetables and grated cheese to the sauce, stirring

to combine.

3. Roll out your pastry and line a pie dish. Spoon in the vegetable mixture.

4. Top with another layer of pastry, sealing the edges and cutting slits in the top.

5. Brush with an egg wash for a golden finish.

6. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and the filling is bubbling.

The ceremony, held in London and hosted by TV personality Lucy Porter was attended by several key members of the firm’s 120 strong family team, including department head

Helen Derry, who said

“This is such a proud award for the whole team to receive because it demonstrates the extraordinary efforts of our family law practitioners and the difference they are making on a daily basis, across all practice areas. The team deal with some of the most complex financial and children cases in the region, together with more straightforward matters with equal commitment and passion to achieve the very best outcome we can for clients.”

The award comes shortly after the firm’s announcement of their results in this year’s Legal 500 (the world’s most prestigious legal directory) with the family team achieving Top Tier status for the 3rd year running. This is the highest ranking a legal team can achieve and is formed of client and peer feedback.

A Nottingham-headquartered developer who championed the regeneration of Bridlesmith Gate has celebrated the realisation of his vision of creating a thriving 'Carnaby Street' in Nottingham

Arran Bailey, managing director of ALB Group, bought 14 properties in Bridlesmith Gate and Byard Lane and seven in Lister Gate in a bid to maintain the prestigious, and once thriving, thoroughfares. All properties are now let. The developer, who embarked on the project in 2021, said the regeneration programme was achieved despite “disappointing” setbacks surrounding the Broad Marsh regeneration.

Arran said: “I’m Nottingham born and bred and so knew the history of this area of town. My aim was to re-establish its vibrancy and appeal. By buying up empty units and injecting the spirit of creativity back into the area, I knew it would draw in independent as well as established retailers and re-establish its prestige.”

Flexible rent agreements and unit sizes ranging from 400 sq. ft to 5,000 sq. ft have ensured a mix of high-calibre tenants at the locations, from established premier retailer Fred Perry Nottingham, to start-up coffee shop and private dining restaurant Table 47, music store Fopp and Coco Tang Cafe and Cocktail Bar.

Following the multiple property acquisitions, five local artists were enlisted to design and create murals on some of the high profile Bridlesmith Gate and Byard Lane buildings.

One mural in Byard Lane adorned the first ever Paul Smith store. The building, now home to Brik Barbers, celebrated the Nottingham legend in artform and was honoured with a visit from

the world-renowned fashion designer.

Arran said: “We had a fantastic reaction to the art installations, especially when Paul Smith himself came down. They’ve been a huge talking point and immensely instagrammable and, in my opinion, have absolutely helped achieve my vision of creating a thriving ‘Carnaby Street’ in Nottingham.”

The developer is now turning his attention to Lister Gate. High-end retailer Flannels has already established its Nottingham store there. Sports Direct is moving into a unit previously occupied by H&M in early 2025. Arran has long been an advocate for retailers. He previously urged the City Council to offer rate discounts to businesses to secure the future growth of the area.

He said: “Our approach to reestablishing the area’s appeal has been a huge success. Bridlesmith Gate has been reinvigorated and is back to being the thriving location it was before the Broadmarsh Centre closed. The closure was massively upsetting, as were the delays to the decisions on the site’s future. However, the new Broad Marsh Green Heart park is now open and has created an attractive gateway into the city. It is definitely another step in the right direction.

“The future is bright for Nottingham.”

Festive First Aid Tips for a Safe Holiday Season

As the festive season approaches, St John Ambulance shares essential first aid tips to ensure a safe and joyous time

St John Ambulance Medical Director, Lynn Thomas said, “The festive period is a joyful time but should come with a ‘health warning’ with the number of things that could go wrong …the DIY decorations, hordes of people under one roof, excessive eating and drinking, and new toys and gadgets to choke on or trip over. We hope our first aid tips will get people up to speed before the festivities begin.”

Get a handle on candles

Christmas is the time of year most fire related incidents happen.

• Never leave candles unattended, and extinguish them before bed. Place them in non-plastic holders and away from flammable materials. For added safety, especially around children and the elderly, consider LED candles.

• In cases of a burn, start cooling the injury as soon as possible. Place the burn or scald under cool water for 20 minutes minimum or until the pain goes away. For severe burns, seek immediate medical attention. Cover minor burns with kitchen film and avoid bursting blisters.

Scary fairy lights

De-tangling fairy lights scores high on the festive stress test and is not much fun, but neither is getting a shock from lights on the blink…

• Check for damaged cables before using fairy lights. Ensure exterior lights are suitable for outdoor use and keep electrical components indoors.

• If an electrical shock occurs, move the person away from the electrical source. You may be able to stand on some dry insulating material (such as a plastic mat or wooden box) and use a broom handle or wooden pole to push the casualty's hand or foot away from the source.

What to do if someone does get an electric shock or go into cardiac arrest:

• Do not touch the casualty until they are clear of electrical source.

• Once you’re sure the contact has been broken between the casualty and the electrical source, perform a primary survey and treat any injuries.

• If they are not breathing, call 999/112 for emergency help. Kneel beside the casualty, level with their chest.

Place the heel of one hand directly in the centre of the chest, put your other hand on top, and interlock fingers. Begin chest compressions –lean over the casualty with your arms straight and press down vertically on the breastbone (about 2-3 inches). Release the pressure, but do not take your hands off the chest. Push at a rate of 100 to 120 per minute. If you are trained to do so, after 30 compressions, provide 2 rescue breaths. If you are unable or unwilling to provide rescue breaths, give continuous chest compressions.

Toy Gory

Anyone who has ever stepped barefoot on a tiny building block or small plastic toy rarely does it twice, but to prevent inflicting pain on unsuspecting relatives and friends, and avoiding trips, keep floorspace tidy!

• Keep floors tidy to prevent trips over toys and batteries. Ensure toys are age-appropriate and not choking hazards.

• If someone is choking, encourage coughing, and perform back blows and abdominal thrusts. If unsuccessful, prepare for CPR.

Anaphylactic Shock

• Call 999/112 for help and tell them you suspect anaphylactic shock.

• If the casualty has an adrenaline auto-injector (epi pen) help them to use it.

• Pull off the safety cap and holding it with your fist, push the tip firmly against the casualty’s thigh until it clicks, releasing the medication (it can be delivered through clothing)

• Hold in place for ten seconds (follow the instructions on the device), then remove.

• Help the casualty sit up, in a position that best helps them to breathe. If they are pale, with a weak pulse, help them to lie down with their legs raised.

• While waiting for help to arrive and if they have more than one EpiPen, repeated doses of adrenaline can be given at 5-minute intervals if there is no improvement.

St John Ambulance reminds everyone to be prepared and knowledgeable about first aid to ensure a happy and safe holiday season.

John Cleese's Comedy Masterpiece Hits The Stage

Currently playing to sold-out houses at London’s Apollo Theatre Shaftesbury Avenue, John Cleese’s Fawlty Towers – The Play, today announces a major theatre tour for 2025 and 2026.

Following the hugely successful West End run – which has seen the show extend twice - “the funniest show in town” (Daily Express) will embark on the 10-month tour across the UK and Ireland on 30 September 2025 through to July 2026. Tickets go on sale on 2 December 2024 from FawltyTowersTour.co.uk.

Based on three of the original BBC TV episodes of the “greatest British sitcom of all time” (Radio Times), Fawlty Towers –The Play has been adapted for the stage by original co-creator John Cleese into a two-hour play, complete with a new finale. Casting will be announced in due course.

Theatre goers across the country are in for a treat as this “comedy masterpiece makes a seamless transition to the stage” (The Arts Desk) to deliver “an indisputably funny evening” (Daily Telegraph), as “from the moment Basil walks on stage, the audience start laughing” (Daily Mail) whilst watching “some of the best punchlines ever written” (London Theatre). To quote Broadway World; “if you loved the original TV series, you will adore this show”.

Directed by the West End originating director, Caroline Jay Ranger, this “as good as it gets” production (Sunday Times) will visit major towns and cities across the UK and Ireland: Eastbourne, Bourne mouth, Wimbledon, High Wy combe, Manchester, Liverpool, Northampton, Southend, Plymouth, Guildford, Leeds, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Sunderland, Wolverhampton, Stoke-on-Trent, Southampton, Ipswich, Birmingham, Bradford, Blackpool, Torquay, Truro, Milton Keynes, Llandudno, Hull, York, Woking, Nottingham, Norwich, Cardiff, Newcastle, Dartford and Oxford.

Television Centre and I’m delighted that the audiences we’ve had in the West End still think it’s as funny as ever. The announcement of the tour means many more people will now have the chance to laugh themselves helpless.”

Following a tip off that hotel inspectors may be visiting and eager to impress, Basil attempts to ingratiate himself with guests that he suspects are there to critique the establishment. The situation is further plagued by a party of Germans, the deaf and dotty guest-from-hell, Mrs Richards, whose infuriating complaints prevent him from hiding a gambling win from his ever vigilant and bossy wife, Sybil. Together they run their hotel with a little help from the unflappable Polly, and very little help at all from Manuel, the trainee waiter from Barcelona who is the butt of Fawlty’s frustration.

Fawlty Towers was first broadcast on BBC Two on 19 September 1975. The iconic TV show went on to win many awards and plaudits including two BAFTAS for Best Situation Comedy and in 2000 it was voted the best British programme of all

owner, Donald Sinclair. John Cleese came up with the idea for the character Basil Fawlty when he stayed at Sinclair’s Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay and became fascinated with his incredibly rude behaviour.

John Cleese said: “When we came up with the idea of bringing Fawlty Towers to the stage, I never thought it would get the reception that it has. On 23 December it will be 50 years to the day since we recorded the pilot at BBC

E xtraordinary E xperience

Lincoln Cathedral is set to host a breathtaking spectacle with Time, an innovative light and sound show created by the acclaimed artistic collaboration Luxmuralis.

From Tuesday 11 to Saturday 15 February 2025 this immersive event will transform the interior of the historic cathedral, filling it with dazzling light, dynamic soundscapes, and multiple projection installations.

Time is an extraordinary exploration of humanity's relationship with the concept of time, offering audiences an unforgettable journey through history, science, and imagination.

Visitors will be guided through a series of captivating installations that show humans through different eras, exploring the fascinating theories of relativity, and the text of H.G. Wells' The Time Machine. Through the immersive projected artworks attendees will traverse

wormholes, venture inside the intricate workings of clocks, and experience a dramatic narrative that spans from the present day back to the very beginning of everything.

The grand finale in the Cathedral's nave will take spectators on a mesmerising voyage through the epochs of humanity, ultimately reaching the formation of our planet, creating a profound and awe-inspiring conclusion to this unique event.

Samantha Mellows, Director of Visitor Experience and Enterprise at Lincoln Cathedral said, “The theme of time is one that is familiar to us all as we balance work, family life, time for ourselves and other daily commitments. Time by Luxmuralis is an

opportunity to take a step back from your usual routine, to stop thinking about the minutes and hours, and for a short period to explore the whole timeline of our planet, and far beyond.

“We’ve had such amazing feedback from people that have come to the previous Luxmuralis shows. For many people it is the first time they have visited the Cathedral, and it is wonderful to be able to offer them such an unforgettable experience where they can see the Cathedral brought to life in a completely different way.”

Time by Luxmuralis will run from Tuesday 11 to Saturday 15 February 2025, with several performances per evening.

Kicking off in May 2025 and heading across the UK and Ireland, tickets are available via pre-sale on 18th November with general on sale taking place on 19th November from www.mickperrin.com/ tours/rhys-darby-the-legendreturns/.

After almost a decade, Darby is back on tour with his classic mix of astute observations and physical stand-up cocooned in a fantastical storyline that takes his audience on a hilarious journey.

In a world full of AI and Robot tech can a simple dad with slightly tight jeans stay relevant? Ancient Astronaut Theorists say yes! Rhys hopes to prove that right now a touch of very human silliness is more important than ever!? Perhaps his unique skills once thought of as absurd, might just be useful after all!

Rhys Darby said today: “I’m so excited to return to the stage, a bit older, a bit wiser but mostly a bit sillier than ever before!”

While Darby may have been treading the standup boards

since the mid 90s and is recognised as one of NZ’s most successful comedy exports, he is best known internationally for his on screen work. He first gained attention as the well-meaning, but inept band manager, Murray Hewitt in Flight of the Conchords. More recently he has starred in the Jumanji franchise and Our Flag Means Death alongside longtime collaborator Taika Waititi. Rhys is also a prolific voice over artist having appeared in over 50 animation roles from Monsters at Work to Voltron Legendary Defender. When not on screen other projects include hosting NZs longest running podcast The Cryptid Factor and shares his funny musings on his Substack.

He has performed his unique style of storytelling all over the world and Rhys is never far from his standup roots having release 5 comedy specials. In addition to stand-up and acting, he has also written four books, This Way to Spaceship, a loosely autobiographical novel, and three kid’s books about his alter ego Buttons McGinty.

Brassy and Bloody Whodunnit...

West Bridgford Operatic Society presents ‘Curtains’, a brassy and bloody whodunnit from award winning songwriter duo Kander and Ebb (writers of Cabaret, Chicago and Fosse) at the Squire Performing Arts Centre.

Nottingham February 18th – 22nd 2025 at 7.30 with a matinee on February 22nd at 2pm.

The show delivers sublime musical numbers and orchestration, fantastic dance numbers, and joyful comedy! The audience is invited to unravel clues with him whilst simultaneously enjoying being entertained. The music offers songs which parody the golden age of musicals, interspersed with and sometimes merging with an inventive and often jazzy score that helps to tell the actual story.

Directed by Linda Croston, choreographed by Justine Lee and musically directed by Adam Wright, it’s an amazingly enjoyable musical romp and a love letter crammed with in-jokes to all those who have ever worked in theatre. Suitable for ages 12+.

HARLEY FOUNDATION

On show from 18 January until 13 March at the Harley Foundation in Nottinghamshire, People’s Art shows the work of five contemporary artists – Ingrid Murphy, Zac Weinberg, Liaqat Rasul, Julia Griffiths Jones, and Francisca Onumah.

Each artist has created new work in response to historic pieces of folk art made by unnamed artists. These new artworks will be displayed alongside the object that inspired it: from wine glasses to a traditional Welsh quilt, to Punch and Judy doorstops.

The exhibition encourages visitors to question what defines “art” versus “craft” and how we assign value to each.

“People’s Art is a small part in the age-old art versus craft debate,” says Lisa Gee, Director of the Harley Foundation. “Our five contemporary artists may call themselves makers, but they no longer create things which can be used – instead creating modern works designed to be considered and thought about. Historic quilts are now hung on walls and called art, but who decides this –the maker or the viewer?”

People’s Art opens a space for visitors of all backgrounds to ask: When does craft become art? What gives

value to an object – its function, its aesthetics, or the story it tells? And which of these objects would you live with?

Featured Artists and Works:

Ingrid Murphy used AI and opensource digital databases to create modern interpretations of classic ceramic Wally Dogs, blending traditional ceramic skills with digital techniques.

Zac Weinberg took inspiration from Victorian dessert wine glasses to create two modern glass pieces exploring Victorian customs – from toasting to duelling.

Liaqat Rasul responded to Punch and Judy cast-iron doorstops, creating an artwork focused on domestic violence awareness.

Julia Griffiths Jones took inspiration from a 19th-century Welsh quilt, transforming textile motifs into metal.

Francisca Onumah reinterpreted a large 1900s metal kettle which was used as a shop sign, her response is made from patinated

People’s Art s a National Glass Centre touring exhibition with support from Arts Council England. People’s Art is on show at the Harley Foundation, Nottinghamshire from 18 January – 13 March 2025.

The exhibition is free to enter and there is a large, free car park.

The Gallery is open Tuesday – Sunday. Please check www.harleyfoundation. org.uk for opening times.

Little helpers needed!

Little helpers needed at CONKERS this Christmas to rescue a missing Elf! Help Twinkle Toes get back to the North Pole between 28 Dec and 3 Jan

CONKERS is keeping the Christmas magic alive a little longer this year with a series of festive workshops after Christmas (Saturday 28, Sunday 29, Monday 30 December and Friday 3 January) where helpful children are required to help an Elf who has been left behind!

Twinkle Toes, a mischievous but lovable elf, was accidentally left behind after Santa’s sleigh took off from Conkers Winter Wonderland on Christmas Eve. As Conkers magical Winter Wonderland Forest begins to close down, pieces of Santa’s world are disappearing. Twinkle Toes needs the help of some kindhearted children to gather enough magic to find their way back to the North Pole before it's too late!

Children can collect forest-themed musical instruments, with Twinkle Toes guiding them and explaining the instruments magical properties. They will be handed ‘Wish Scrolls’ - special pieces of paper where they can jot down or draw their Christmas thank yous. As they make their wishes, the forest surrounding them will illuminate, indicating that they are heading in the right direction. The final magical boost comes from singing Christmas songs together. Their voices

will open the path to Santa’s Grotto, and Twinkle Toes will be transported back home! As a reward, children will receive a special keepsake from Santa himself.

Additional workshops will also be available, such as catching glimmering snowflakes with enchanted nets, building a snowman army and solving the riddles of the ‘Talking Trees’.

Other activities include:

• Elf Loco’s Conkachoo Train

• 4D cinema

• Fairy Labyrinth

• Outdoor and indoor play areas

Nicky Carlton, General Manager at CONKERS, said: “We can’t wait to welcome families to CONKERS to help our little lost elf find his way home! Guaranteed snow and a magical, glowing forest will warm the hearts of both children and parents alike, whilst providing the perfect reason to get outdoors and blow away the festive cobwebs!”

A Magical Beanstalk Grows at Nottingham Playhouse

This holiday season, Nottingham Playhouse is set to enchant audiences with a giant-sized serving of festive fun. Their annual pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, promises to be the perfect night out for all the family.

Taking centre stage as our lovable hero Jack is Finton Flynn, fresh from his national tour as Jamie in Everybody's Talking About Jamie. You might also recognize him from his stint on Coronation Street as Russ Gray. Flynn can’t wait to spend Christmas in Nottingham - " I'm so delighted to be joining the team at

Nottingham Playhouse for this year's panto. I love panto season and can't wait to see all those happy, festive families in the audience.”

Flynn joins a stellar cast of panto veterans, including the legendary John Elkington as Dame Daisy Trott (expect outrageous costumes and even more outrageous jokes), and Tom Hopcroft as the delightfully dastardly Fleshcreep.

But the magic doesn't stop there. Fourteen local youngsters will bring the farmyard to life, playing

everything from chickens to scarecrows. Who knows, you might spot a future star in the making! Adam Penford, Artistic Director couldn't be more pleased with the cast. "Finton is a terrific performer. We're delighted that he will be joining us for his first ever panto. The Playhouse panto is legendary, and he'll be working alongside the very best. What a great addition to our brilliant seasonal team.”

Will Jack outwit the giant and reclaim his father's magic harp? Can he bag the goose that lays golden eggs and change his family's fortunes? And most importantly – how many spectacular costume changes will the best Dame in Nottingham have? There's only one way to find out! Tickets for this sky-high adventure are already on sales so grab yours now for this super-sized extravaganza that will leave everyone feeling sky-high.

A Fresh Take on The Ugly Duckling Comes to Nottingham Playhouse

Nottingham Playhouse is bringing a delightful treat to its youngest audience members this Christmas. A charming new adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's beloved tale, The Ugly Duckling, promises a magical experience for children aged 3 to 8.

Ethan Cooper makes his Playhouse debut in the title role, joined by Maya Thompson, (who audiences will recognise from last year’s Hansel and Gretel) who will bring to life to a menagerie of lovable farm animals.

Behind the scenes, an exciting team of creatives is breathing life into this classic story. The script is by Isabella Waldron, and Laura Ryder will direct. Composer Ben Glasstone has created enchanting original music to accompany the duckling's journey.

Families can look forward to a 50-minute show filled with music and interactive moments. But what sets this production apart is its commitment to accessibility. Creative captioning, using simple imagery to highlight key story points, makes the show more inclusive for children with hearing difficulties or auditory processing issues.

The Designer for the show is Nottinghamshire-born Alexandrea Hopkin-Spratt, a Nottingham Trent University graduate (BA Hons Design for Theatre and Live Performance) who was announced as the winner of the Playhouse Prize earlier this year. The prize gives a recent graduate their first professional job after training, which is producing the costume and set designs for the Christmas show for younger children in the Neville Studio. "I'm thrilled to be part of this production," Alexandrea commented. "Knowing that many local schools will have access to this performance aligns perfectly with my passion for bringing arts to young audiences."

The Ugly Duckling is part of Nottingham Playhouse's broader initiative to nurture local talent and provide equal opportunities in the arts. After its run at the Playhouse, the show will embark on a tour of schools and community venues in January 2025.

At its heart, this production is a gorgeous family show. We follow a unique little duckling who, feeling out of place in their own family, sets out on an adventure to find where they belong. Along the way, they encounter clever

creatures and face exciting challenges, ultimately learning that being true to oneself is the greatest adventure of all.

Don't miss this opportunity to introduce your little ones to the magic of live theatre with a story that celebrates individuality and friendship.

Neverland Experience at Blenheim Palace

Blenheim Palace is inviting children and their families to embark on a swashbuckling journey in Adventure Play this festive period, with storyboards along the way to encourage imaginative play, inspired by the magic of Neverland.

Until 1st January 2025, young adventurers can immerse themselves in the magic of J.M. Barrie’s beloved story of Peter Pan at Blenheim Palace’s Adventure Play, a hidden world of adventure. Children can earn their own Adventure Play badge after completing the Neverland storyboard activities, which spark imagination and bring Barrie’s famous characters to life. Designed for inquisitive minds and vivid imaginations, the play area is home to a thrilling network of tunnels, bridges, cargo nets, and hidden chambers for endless exploration and excitement.

J.M. Barrie, the author of Peter Pan, gifted the rights to his beloved story to Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in 1929. The Darlings’ family home in the story drew inspiration from Barrie’s own lodgings, located near the hospital. His generous act has provided ongoing support for seriously ill children treated at GOSH, making this event a celebration of both play and purpose.

The Neverland activities at Blenheim Palace this year are part of an ongoing partnership between Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity (GOSH Charity) and Blenheim Palace, which promises to bring the timeless

story of Peter Pan to life while giving children at GOSH the best chance, and childhood, possible.

Heather Carter, Managing Director - Visitor Attraction at Blenheim Palace, said: “We are thrilled to bring the magic of Neverland to Adventure Play this Christmas. It’s a unique opportunity for families to create unforgettable memories whilst celebrating the wonder of the timeless story of Peter Pan. It’s also a privilege to highlight the legacy of Barrie’s generosity, which continues to support Great Ormond Street Hospital and the incredible work they do.”

After visiting Adventure Play, families can browse the Neverland themed shop, where they can purchase Neverland themed coasters, Christmas tree decorations, and mugs featuring much loved characters; Peter Pan, Wendy, Tinkerbell, Captain Hook, and Croc.

Adventure Play at Blenheim Palace is currently operating winter opening hours, from Friday to Sunday. During the school holidays (23rd December to 3rd January), Adventure Play will be open throughout the week as normal.

The Palace & Play Pass is £150 for a family of four (two adults and two children) and is £50 per adult and £40 per child for individual day passes. Existing Family Annual Pass holders (two adults and two children) can upgrade to the new Palace and Play Pass for £51 and individual annual passes can be upgraded for £18 per child and £12 per adult.

Grace & Dotty Celebrates Real Women

Local country clothing fashion brand Grace & Dotty is redefining style with an empowering approach to its new campaign. Departing from traditional fashion norms, the brand's Autumn/ Winter photoshoot shines a spotlight on everyday women, not professional models, as the faces of its collection.

Held at the scenic Southwell Racecourse, the #HereComeTheGirls campaign featured five loyal Grace & Dotty customers who stepped into the spotlight to showcase the brand’s countrychic designs. The result? A refreshing celebration of authenticity, personality, and the real lives of women who embody the Grace & Dotty ethos.

The concept behind #HereComeTheGirls was simple yet revolutionary: to celebrate the real women who live, breathe and love the brand. Grace & Dotty believes that fashion should reflect the people who embrace it, and by featuring its customers in this campaign, the brand is fostering a relatable and inspiring connection with its audience.

“Using real women creates a real connection between the brand and our audience and allows others to see themselves in our clothes and think, ‘That could be me,’” said Karen Ellis, owner of Grace & Dotty. “We wanted to break away from the polished, unattainable imagery of traditional fashion shoots and focus on authenticity. These women were a dream to work with and brought so much life and joy to the campaign. Between them they proved just how beautiful authenticity can be.”

The photoshoot was a blend of camaraderie and creativity. Despite the crisp November weather, the energy was warm and spirited. The five participants modelled Grace & Dotty’s signature tweed wool ponchos and stylish fedora hats, all against the natural beauty of Southwell Racecourse. Renowned Horse Racing photographer Nigel Kirby was tasked with capturing the magic of the day. His brief was to highlight the women’s natural beauty with minimal retouching – ensuring the images

remained authentic and relatable and the essence of these women shone through. Each pose and candid moment perfectly reflects the unique personalities of the participants.

The photoshoot’s visuals are debuting across Grace & Dotty’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. “This campaign highlights not just our collection but the real women who bring it to life,” Ellis shared. “We’re proud to share their stories and hope it inspires others to embrace their own unique style.”

Based in Whatton, Nottinghamshire, Grace & Dotty is a local fashion brand specialising in timeless, country-inspired clothing. With a focus on quality craftsmanship and relatable designs, the brand continues to redefine fashion by celebrating the individuality of its customers.

Now that the festive season is in full swing, we've rounded up a selection of jewellery that showcases the top trends for this time of year, along with a little bit of fun! From vibrant gemstones in festive colours —like emeralds and rubies—to crystal and beaded pieces, the options are designed to add sparkle to any outfit.

Nature-inspired shapes, featuring leaves and pine motifs bring an organic feel to the holiday season. The season also sees mixed metal designs, blending gold and silver tones for a modern, versatile look.

Layered necklaces continue to trend as well, with longer pendants adding dimension and style, making them an ideal choice for creating a unique and eye-catching festive look. And, lastly, it can't be Christmas without some novelty jewellery fun featuring snowflakes, candy canes and Christmas Trees!

Perfect Party Hairstyles

The festive season has begun and with it comes a jampacked party calendar filled with office dos, drinks with the guys from work and long awaited family get togethers

Stunning Curls

Towel-dry your freshly washed hair and apply styling spray to start, it's heat activated and locks in that essential moisture, helping to create texture that’s glamorously glossy! After blow drying, use a large-barrelled heated tong and select small sections of the hair, wrapping them vertically towards you around the tong for 20 seconds. Once you’ve completed this process on all of your hair, spray with a beach waves spray, and tousle the curls with your fingers until they’re perfect for you.

All Wrapped Up

For this chic up do, start by taking your favourite hairspray and backcombing the hair on the crown of your head to create volume. Next, take two small sections - one from either side - from the front of your ear and bring them to the back, and then tie them in a knot. Secure this knot with a hair grip if you need to. Continue this process, taking additional sections of the hair from the front and tying in a knot

at the back, until all the hair has been knotted. Secure this with a hair band at the nape of the neck. Depending on the length of the hair, you can then secure any existing hair left at the end of the ponytail up and onto the head using grips.

Plaited Pretty

The French plait never goes out of style and with added volume at the crown; it’s an essential party look that’s sure to turn heads. Starting at the top of the hair, create a ‘beehive’ type style by pushing a three-inch section of hair from the centre to the front of the crown, securing with hairspray and grips if necessary. Then, divide the hair at the top of the head into three sections and cross over into a simple plait. To add interest, create the French plait by taking small, horizontal sections of the hair from either side and adding into the main plait, crossing over in the middle strand. Continue this process until all of the hair is plaited and secure with a clear band for a chic finish.

Three reasons why shouldeveryonejournal

Journaling expert and founder of wellbeing stationery brand LSW London, Lili SinclairWilliams, gives three reasons why everyone should journal.

Journaling will help you to identify issues

Regular reviews over your entries will help you to pinpoint any behavioural patterns that might not be serving you.

life. Celebrating feels good, do more of it!

Journaling can reduce stress and anxiety

It’s almost impossible to remember how you were feeling at specific times and specific days gone by - so keeping track of that in a journal will help you make note of what does and what does not make you feel good.

Journaling will help you to track your growth

Alongside identifying issues, journaling will help you to track your progress and growth. It is important to celebrate your wins in life and to feel good when you have achieved stages of growth, both mentally and in

Negative thoughts can often spiral when giving time to loop and develop internally. Journaling gives you the opportunity to pull those stresses and anxieties from your mind and onto paper. This relief can often help you make better sense of negative thoughts and work through them in order to come up with solutions.

Lili Sinclair-Williams, Founder of LSW London, said:

"Journaling is an incredibly powerful and accessible tool that can be fitted into even the busiest of daily schedules. A beneficial journaling habit can take just a few minutes of your day while still having profound effects.

"Keeping your journaling structured by using prompted journals can help to keep your writing purposeful and helpful. Journaling does not need to be perfect. It is about finding the style that suits you and sticking to it. One of the most important parts of the process is the weekly and monthly reviews. Each week, check back over your entries and identify any patterns that arise (good and bad) in order to make any relevant changes in your life."

About LSW London: LSW London was founded by Lili Sinclair-Williams in 2018.

Focusing on positive habits we repeat daily, Lili uses her expertise as therapist to curate her favourite techniques, tools and stress busting exercises into a range of products designed to help you prioritise your wellbeing no matter how busy your schedule.

Top Tips to get in shape this Christmas

The festive season can often make it difficult to stick to your fitness goals, but with the right approach, you can stay on track.

Whether you are juggling holiday parties, family gatherings, or travel plans, these effective exercise hacks will help you stay active and motivated.

Here are 10 practical tips from Gym Flooring Suppliers at Sprung Gym Flooring to keep your fitness routine intact and ensure you enter the new year feeling your best.

MAKE SMALL ADJUSTMENTS TO YOUR HOLIDAY ROUTINE

Instead of aiming for drastic changes during the holidays, focus on minor adjustments. If you typically work out for an hour, try to squeeze in 20-minute sessions. Small, manageable workouts can help you stay active without feeling overwhelmed.

SET A SCHEDULE AND STICK TO IT

Plan your workouts in advance and treat them as appointments on your calendar. By scheduling your fitness sessions, whether it is before a holiday meal or in the morning, you are more likely to follow through. Stick to the schedule as closely as possible.

CHOOSE FUN AND FESTIVE ACTIVITIES

Find creative ways to incorporate exercise into holiday traditions. Go ice skating, take part in a holiday 5k, or even organise a Christmas scavenger hunt. These activities can keep you moving while also adding some fun to your holiday celebrations.

USE FAMILY TIME TO STAY ACTIVE

Instead of lounging after meals, encourage family activities that get everyone moving. Go for a brisk walk, play a game of backyard football, or take the kids sledging. These shared moments can boost your fitness and create lasting memories.

INCORPORATE QUICK, EFFECTIVE CHRISTMAS WORKOUTS

If you are pressed for time, opt for short, at-home high-intensity interval training (HIIT) sessions that deliver a full-body workout in just 15-20 minutes. Play your favourite Christmas music to make the workout festive and fun.

REWARD YOURSELF

Set milestones and reward yourself for achieving them, like treating yourself to something special, whether it is indulging in a favourite holiday treat or relaxing with a Christmas film. These rewards give you something to look forward to and help keep your motivation high.

FOCUS ON CONSISTENCY, NOT PERFECTION

Don’t aim for perfection during the holidays. It is okay if you miss a workout or enjoy a few extra treats. What matters most is the consistency of your efforts over time. Embrace the season and keep making small, consistent steps toward your fitness goals.

STAY ACTIVE DURING TRAVEL

Travelling during the holidays can make it hard to stick to your fitness routine, but with planning, it is

possible. Suggest group activities like postdinner walks with your family. Also, pack portable equipment like resistance bands or light dumbbells for quick workouts anytime.

EMBRACE ACTIVE RECOVERY DURING THE HOLIDAYS

Incorporate light stretching, yoga, or foam rolling into your routine to maintain flexibility, reduce stress, and prevent injuries. These activities can help you stay physically and mentally balanced during the busy season.

JOIN A FESTIVE FITNESS CHALLENGE

Keep the festive spirit alive by joining or creating a fitness challenge with friends or family. Whether it is a daily step goal, a plank challenge, or a workout streak, accountability can help you stay on track with your fitness goals, even amidst the holiday fun.

“Staying active during the holidays does not have to be difficult or stressful. By making small adjustments, prioritising fun activities, and staying consistent, you can maintain your fitness goals while enjoying the festive season.

“Remember, it's about balance and making the most of the time spent with loved ones, so keep moving and have fun!” Richard McKay, CEO of Sprung at Sprung Gym Flooring concludes.

secrets to scoring the best holiday deals

Travel experts at Seine River Cruises revealed insider tips for securing the best holiday deals, offering guidance on maximising savings when planning trips.

Whether you're planning a long getaway or a short break, these expert insights will guide you to finding the best deals and making your travel dreams a reality.

Set price alert for flight deals

Booking flights in advance saves money and setting up price alerts ensures you get the best deal. Use Skyscanner and Google Flights to track prices and get notified when they drop, giving you more options and a better chance to secure the lowest price.

Go to countries with cheap daily costs

As we head into 2025, savvy travellers are looking for ways to make their trips more affordable. With the right strategies in place, it is possible to save big on everything from flights to accommodation

calling the hotel directly could sometimes result in cheaper rates or added perks.

Don’t book holidays last-minute

UK tour operators like Jet2holidays and TUI offer better prices when booked 2-6 months in advance. For fewer delays, travel in March, and consider off-peak months like September and October for lower costs. Booking on Sundays can save you 20% on domestic holidays and 10% on international ones.

Use trains over flights

Travelling to destinations with lower living costs can greatly reduce your overall expenses. Cities like Budapest and Belgrade offer affordable accommodation and dining. Use cost comparison tools like Numbeo to find the best value for your next trip.

Spread the cost of your holiday

If you find a great deal but need time to pay, services like Klarna let you spread the cost over three months interest-free. This option is available on platforms like Booking.com, Airbnb, and Expedia, allowing you to secure your booking and pay at your own pace.

Book hotels via smartphone

for extra discounts

Booking hotels through your smartphone may unlock mobile-only discounts. Websites like Booking.com and Hotels.com often offer lower rates on their apps. Additionally,

Travelling by train, such as taking the Eurostar to Paris, can save you money compared to flights. European train systems offer great discounts for early bookings. Plus, trains provide more flexibility and often offer a more scenic and comfortable journey. Keep flights cheap

with flexible dates

Being flexible with your travel dates can lead to significant savings, as airlines often offer lower fares on less popular days. Shifting your travel dates by a day or two can make a big difference.

Get more legroom and sit together for free

For extra legroom, opt for seats on the right side of the plane, near the bulkhead or towards the back for more space. Airlines like BA and EasyJet usually seat families together for free if you skip reserved seating, so check in early to increase your chances.

Consider hotels over Airbnb for better value

In many destinations, hotels are often more affordable than Airbnb rentals. According to a recent study by Which?, hotel rooms were an average of £67 cheaper than one-bedroom Airbnb rentals in 38 out of 50 destinations. Additionally, booking hotels on Thursdays can save you up to 6%.

Stay in lesser-known cities for huge

savings

Staying in well-known cities can drive up your travel costs. Consider alternatives like Lille instead of Paris for a more affordable yet charming experience. These hidden gems offer lower accommodation and dining costs, helping you stretch your budget.

Magdalena Petrusic, travel expert from Seine River Cruises, also added her favourite bonus tip: "By collecting loyalty points from schemes like Avios, Tesco Clubcard, or Nectar, you can use them towards flights, hotels, or car rentals.

“Using a points credit card will help maximise your savings and accumulate even more points. With a little strategic shopping, you could fund parts of your holiday with the points you've earned—helping you save big on your next trip."

THE GROVES

Make the most of the idyllic scenery by taking a leisurely stroll along the riverside promenade known as “The Groves”. The tiered Groves are lined with cafés, guesthouses, restaurants and venders selling delicious Cheshire ice cream in the summer. Alternatively, ‘ChesterBoat’ city cruises are a great way to spend your time relaxing as you take in the grandeur of the residential properties on the bank of the Dee heading towards the Eaton Estate, home to the Duke of Westminster. You can even hire a pedalo, rowing boat or motorboat if you are feeling lively! There are several eateries at walking distance including Hickory’s Smokehouse, The Moorings and The Boathouse where you can refuel.

Navigating Divorce

Emma Davies from Nelsons discusses how to protect the family business in divorce proceedings

Establish the business structure

Understanding the business structure is the first step in determining how the business will be treated in divorce proceedings. The three most common types are:

• The sole trader is the owner and controller of the business and is personally liable for the business and its debts.

• Partnerships, formal or informal. There are various types, and the business structure can be more complicated. Partnership shares and ownership can vary as can business liability.

• A limited company can be more complicated and involves the issue of shares and appointment of directors within the company. There can be many owners of the business who have differing interests.

Value the family business

Valuing the family business determines what is in the ‘matrimonial pot’ for distribution between the divorcing couple. The valuation will almost always be based on the current market valuation. However, in some circumstances, historic valuations are necessary.

Normally the valuation will be carried out by an independent forensic accountant. The accountant will require full financial disclosure including financial and management accounts and other relevant information. The accountant will be instructed to deal with other issues including:

• The liquidity of the business in order to raise funds and applicable tax;

• Disposal of the business or transfer of shares; and

• The renumeration directors in the business might expect to receive.

When the family business involves land and buildings then it will usually be necessary to obtain a valuation of these assets too.

Settlement

The final stage of the process is to decide how to deal with the family business as a settlement. This will normally involve three options:

• Putting the business up for sale: enables a divorcing couple to sell the business

Dealing with the treatment of business assets on divorce can be complex and

Statement Marble

Statement marble is set to transform interior trends for 2025. Dining furniture is being transformed with the introduction of stunning patterns and textures which evoke the beauty of nature.

Amthal Karim, Head of Design at Furniture And Choice comments:

“When we talk about furniture styles in interior design - it’s usually always about the sofa. More recently, dining furniture is coming back into the spotlight. The introduction of statement stone and marble effect finishes are set to inspire homeowners looking to revamp their dining room in 2025.

Dining tables are being transformed with the introduction of stunning patterns and textures which evoke the beauty of natural materials. The inspiration for these beautiful designs is the revival of neo-classical design in home décor. The Hellenistic Revival trend is heavily inspired by the style of Ancient Greece, which is opulent and extravagant. Think of accessories like classical busts, statues, oversized vases, Corinthian columns, all the fancy things you would see in an art museum.

Marble or stone is a timeless material which simply emanates luxury - without much effort. It needs neither an introduction, or embellishment. The choice of endless colours and nuances

in pattern make choosing a dining table, worktop or splashback a project - rather than a task.

You can opt for classic Carrara marble with its glossy white backdrop and subtle grey streaks. If you want to go bolder, then Calacatta Viola marble has maximum impact with its purple tinge and large, distinctive veins. In terms of colour everything from white to charcoal, creams and browns as well as contemporary green and blue marbles will be on trend for 2025.

The organic texture of marble is enough to transform any dining room into a designer space. Renowned for its luxurious appeal and natural beauty, marble works equally well within minimal and grand, maximal interiors.

A Calacatta Viola marble-effect dining table is the perfect accompaniment for period features within your room - such as wall panelling, coving or an ornate ceiling rose. Or you can create just as much impact by placing a black marble-effect slab table within a minimal space - think soft minimalism with a boost of luxe.

Whether you choose to underplay your statement marble table in a simple setting - or make it the hero - marble is guaranteed to elevate your interior. What’s more, it's the perfect choice if you want your home to feel like a designer property - but without the high price tag.”

Getting the Best out of your Wood Burner

As the temperature begins to fall and energy prices continue to rise, many homeowners are turning to their wood burners to provide an additional source of heat in their living rooms. Offering comfort, warmth and the gentle flicker of flames, a wood burning stove is the perfect addition to your home, especially with the hosting season fast approaching.

To help you get the best out of your stove, ensuring it functions at its best, Joanna Humphreys, Fire and Stove Specialist at Direct Stoves shares her expert insight.

Choosing the right fuel

One of the most important elements of efficient burning is selecting the right fuel, as it impacts the heat output, burn cleanliness and the overall health of your stove. For wood burning stoves, it’s best to use seasoned or kiln-dried logs with a moisture content below 20% for optimal burning. If drying wood yourself, ensure it has enough time to season, and for reassurance, seek out logs with the Woodsure certification- a UK standard for high-quality ready-to-burn wood. This can then be stored in a dry, well-ventilated area to ensure it maintains low moisture levels. Painted or varnished wood should be avoided due to the chemicals it contains, which can release toxins and complicate stove cleaning.

Cleaning and maintenance

Although wood is a brilliant fuel source for generating heat, it does require some extra maintenance to keep your stove in

good condition. Regular cleaning not only boosts efficiency and extends the lifespan of your stove - saving you money in the long run - but also maintains the overall tidiness of your living room.

A consistent cleaning schedule, whether fortnightly or monthly is advised. It’s also important to remember, it’s not just the exterior that needs cleaning, the flue and glass door need attention too and may require different techniques. Always ensure the stove has completely cooled before cleaning, and wear protective gloves. Use a small spade to carefully remove ash from the stove and transfer it to a metal ash container or bucket. After 24 hours, dispose of the cooled ash safely outdoors, away from any bushes, trees or other materials that might catch fire. For the glass, you can use charcoal produced by your stove or a dedicated cleaning product. If using charcoal, dampen a cold piece of charcoal from the stove and rub it on the inside of the glass, then wipe away the residue with

rolled-up kitchen roll for a perfectly clean glass window; ideal for watching the flicker of flames.

Stove safety

As with any home decor or soft furnishing, it’s essential to be cautious about their placement near the stove. Flammable items such as bunting or tinsel should never be placed close to an open flame. Refer to your stove manufacturer’s handbook for the minimum safe distance to combustibles, and ensure all decorative items are kept beyond this distance.

Fireguards are an excellent way to prevent anything from getting too close to the flame, providing an added layer of protection that’s especially useful for open fireplaces and homes with pets or young children. A fitted wooden beam or mantel surround can also be a stylish, safe option, allowing you to decorate your mantel while maintaining a safe distance and reducing the risk of fire.

WONDERFUL WINTER WILDLIFE

With cold temperatures and food in short supply, winter is a particularly challenging time for the wildlife that inhabits your garden. Luckily, there are steps that you can take to ensure that your garden acts as a safe haven for all of the creatures that decide to make their way through it.

Leave your garden untamed

While it’s tempting to constantly tend to your garden to ensure that it looks as neat and tidy as possible, allowing things to run wild could actually be more beneficial to wildlife. Piles of leaves can act as nests for animals to hibernate and rest under, while a compost heap will provide the perfect habitat for toads. Not only are you helping the animals, you’ll also be saving yourself countless hours of work in your garden!

snacks that you can leave in different areas of your garden for birds and other creatures to nibble on. For small birds, bacon rind and grated cheese are both safe bets, while squirrels will enjoy a variety of nuts as well as chopped apple and spinach.

Help out thirsty creatures

You may think that animals don’t require as much water during the winter months as they would in summer, but the cold conditions and thick ice can actually steal vital moisture, making it harder for animals to survive. Leave out a fresh water source every day either in a bird bath or bowl and remember to monitor the water every couple of hours; you may need pour in hot water to melt away the sheets of ice.

Provide suitable sustenance

Hunting for food is much harder for wildlife when they are up against adverse weather conditions including frost and snow, so if you want to do a good deed, consider appropriate

Check before lighting a fire

One of the most common reasons for loss of life amongst wildlife is the lighting of fires; whether you have a log fire structure or just like to light bonfires when you have guests visiting during the colder months, doing

being seriously injured. To avoid this, check thoroughly for any signs of life before lighting a fire.

Break frozen ice on ponds

When the temperature really drops, you may notice that your garden pond freezes over. When this happens, it’s important that you make a hole in the ice, which will allow toxic gases to escape.

Remember to always break ice carefully and avoid doing it by tipping boiling water into the bond, which could easily kill fishes or frogs living underneath.

TREND FUELLING SELF-CARE

Nottingham garden room firm Cabin Master has reported huge interest in its sauna cabin range in response to a growing UK home leisure and self-care trend.

The new range of cabins is an extension of the brand’s long-established luxury garden room business, which manufactures its bespoke products in Ilkeston and installs them across the UK.

In recent years, health-conscious Brits have increasingly placed their focus on physical and mental wellbeing. From gyms to cold water plunge pools, UK households have honed-in on the ‘therapy at home’ trend. Now, Cabin Master’s home saunas are fast becoming the “hot” product since the firm launched them earlier this year.

Kay Pollard, digital marketing manager for Cabin Master, said: “Our sauna cabins are completing the work-life balance equation, especially for home-workers. Alongside home gyms, they are fast becoming a ‘must have’ addition for the health conscious.”

Saunas have been credited with a range of health benefits for the body and soul.

In a recent article by Women’s Health UK, 11 benefits were listed as being attributed to regular use of a sauna. These included improvements to circulation, blood pressure, stress levels, muscle stiffness and respiratory issues. Additional benefits were related to mood, sleep and cardiovascular health.

Cabin Master, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and installers of highquality, bespoke garden rooms, branched out into designing sauna cabins after the Covid pandemic changed working practices and placed the emphasis on health and personal well-being.

Kay said: “Covid changed many aspects of UK life but one of the positives that came out of the pandemic was the focus on self-care. This has rolled over into how households view their homes and gardens.”

Launched for the first time this year, Kay said that sales of its sauna cabins had steadily increased as more people became aware of how easy it was to have one installed in their garden.

Cabin Master, which has a show sites in Studley, Warwickshire, and Toton Lane, Stapleford, just off Bardills island, works directly with its customers to design and install bespoke sauna cabins. A typical sauna will only require an overall space of 3.7m x 3.9m so will fit neatly into most gardens.

The timber building specialist said that a sauna of this size would comfortably accommodate five people on its integrated two-tier bench seating. Made in the UK from solid slow-grown Redwood, and using the very latest Thermwood technology, they are fitted with a Finnishmade 6kw electric heater.

Kay said: “Customers are ditching the gloom of long winter nights ahead in exchange for Scandi-inspired sauna cabins that promote health and wellbeing regardless of the weather. Not only are they warm and welcoming, ready to rid you of the day’s stresses, with regular use, they are proven to improve heart and mental health, relieve chronic pain and, of course, aid relaxation and lower stress.”

The Global Sauna Survey (Hussain 2019)¹ found that those who used a sauna five to

15 times a month reported greater general mental wellbeing than those who used it less frequently. Also, 83.5 per cent of sauna users reported improved sleep after their sauna sessions.

The family run firm offers a free site survey, design drawings to customers’ own specifications, and finance options if required. Each building comes with a 10year guarantee as standard on building materials, workmanship and labour. Cabin Master provides a range of insulated garden rooms. Its range includes annexes, garden offices, bars, gyms, photographic studios, barbecue cabins, additional school rooms and Arctic-style lodges.

Both intuition and common sense should tell you if someone is genuine or fake. If you can’t decide which path to follow, then sit back and wait because all will be revealed in the fulness of time. A project must not be abandoned just because someone else has planted seeds of doubt in your mind. Success must be worked at because nothing worth having comes easy, and there are no free lunches in the universe.

Involving yourself in other people’s problems and arguments will lead to misunderstandings and misinterpretations. Someone's attitude will test your patience, but some truths emerging will take everyone by surprise. Long overdue holiday arrangements give you much to look forward to, but a last-minute hitch could end up costing you a lot of unexpected money.

Aries taurus cancer leo

Although you have itchy feet, you are not in a position to suddenly take any drastic action, but realise that everything has cost money. Extra responsibilities may prove overwhelming, but nothing you cannot cope with. A pleasant surprise regarding finances will lift your mood from feeling despondent to feeling on top of the world and ready to spread your wings and fly.

Think twice before revealing things out that you would normally keep hidden out of sight. Your restlessness is growing stronger, but remember that it is charm that opens doors, not tactlessness. Romantic skies are lightening up your world and causing you to daydream about what might be with someone you develop feelings for.

You will succeed on making a huge impact on several people by displaying true grit and commitment. Refuse to take any more nonsense from someone who loves playing mind games and is always at the centre of every drama. Your time is valuable, so choose to spend it with people whom you share common interests with rather than those who drain you both emotionally and financially.

You like to be organised and in control, so you will not enjoy sitting at some crossroads, feeling completely bewildered and confused. You have had several hard decisions to make and none of them have been easy. Someone has a fascinating secret to share with you, but don’t believe everything you hear.

Its important to present yourself at your very best when meeting people or attending interviews. Your self control, confidence and poise gradually improving so you are bound to impress where it matters and with whom it counts. Something you have mulled over for weeks suddenly becomes clear, so don’t waste time thinking the worst.

Important personal or legal matters come under scrutiny, and someone may not have been as honest and truthful as they portrayed. If your instincts warn you against a business or romantic venture, then take heed of the warnings. Your renewed self-confidence and assertiveness is helping you to make better decisions whilst attracting more suitable friendships.

If anyone can reach a much desired target or goal, you can, Never show your weaknesses nor your fears to anyone because they will cause you to look vulnerable. Always be soft spoken and don’t agree to commit to anything until you are absolutely sure that its what you really want. A romantic holiday could decide your fate regarding a relationship or some other matter.

Somebody is being rather prickly and on the defensive. It wont be long before you are onto their guilty. An ongoing dispute could escalate, but your quick thinking will prevent you from entering a disaster zone. Finances need careful handling as debt is something that must definitely be avoided.

The frantic pace of life and all its trials and upheavals continue, but you are doing amazingly well despite all the set backs and challenges. The state of your finances will weigh heavily on your mind, especially if you are short of money. Changes are happening, so its important that you plan carefully for the future and follow your intuition regarding one particular personal or professional relationship.

HOLLYGATE MEMORIAL WOODLANDS

A.M. Buckingham Independent Family Funeral Services began in Cotgrave in 2008 when owner Tony Buckingham established Cotgrave & District Funeral Services. Since then, they have enjoyed a growing reputation for excellent service and competitive pricing. To enhance their service capacity we have opened branches in Clifton, Carlton and now Bingham, to allow us to serve the wider Nottinghamshire and surrounding areas.

We can arrange all aspects of a funeral and offers each type of service from direct cremation to bespoke funeral services. Each branch is staffed by empathetic and understanding people who will listen to your requirements and help with every aspect of the funeral arrangements. We can also offer a dark blue hearse and two matching 7 seat limousines, allowing family members to travel together to the funeral service. Our staff are always on hand to help and advice with all your funeral arrangements.

We solely manage and maintain Hollygate memorial woodlands, situated on Hollygate Lane to the north east of Cotgrave. The woods were planted in 2011 as a conservation woodland to promote the conservation and reintroduction of birds into this area by planting a variety of native broadleaved species.

The planting is naturalistic with open unplanted rides giving access to the 5 separate woods and spinnies. There is an active management scheme in place to help with the establishment of the trees. The company are actively planting more species such as pollen rich plants in the open ride areas to enhance insect life to further encourage all types of bird. Some areas will be left more natural to further help the insects and small animals.

There is a water source at the bottom of the woods, the Grantham canal, which has a large population of amphibious creatures and water based insects to further enhance the wildlife populations. We offer you the opportunity to choose a specific tree and have it as your own growing memorial to the departed loved one. The woods are private but by leasing a tree you also have the right to enter any time and walk or sit in the quiet of the woodlands.

Alternatively, we do offer full burial plots if cremation is not an option for you. We can supply coffins, caskets, urns and pouches made from natural and biodegradable materials for the interment of remains, to ensure the woodlands continue to develop into a natural environment.

There are many species of trees and shrubs that you can choose as a living memorial for your loved one, including mighty Oaks, flowering Cherry, Ash, Willow, Silver Birch and fruiting Hawthorne or festive Holly. Alternatively, you can choose a family plot where up to 6 cremated remains can be interred around a single tree.

We also have supplies of native woodland plants, sourced from sustainable sites, that can be planted around the memorial sites.

NEW KIT FOR LINCS & NOTTS AIR AMBULANCE DOCTOR

THANKS TO THE LEN PICK TRUST

Doctor Chris Woodmansey joined LNAA earlier in the year and needed to be kitted out with a made to measure outfit that would be suitable for the demanding work that he and the rest of the LNAA team undertake every day.

Thanks to the Trustees at The Len Pick Trust and their generous donation of £3,554, Chris now has a specifically designed uniform which will help him to provide a range of emergency procedures for the patients that he will treat.

He said: “Our uniform is essential for the work that we do, and we ask it to do a lot for us! It's vital that we can get to anyone who needs our help no matter where or when the incident happens. So, the uniform must be built for below-zero winter nights, fire resistance, climbing through a hedge, walking down a ditch, or any other conditions we find after landing.”

“There are multiple durable storage pockets which allows us to keep emergency equipment immediately to hand but protected. And a uniform that fits well means we're not inhibited when performing a procedure or rushing to a patient.”

The Len Pick Trust, based in Bourne, Lincolnshire give grants to organisations that will benefit the people of the town. Trustee David Bailey explained why it was so important for them to make this donation to LNAA.

He said: “Everybody in Bourne could benefit from Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance at any time. Bourne is a rural town and

the importance is there for all to see. The air ambulance flies overhead regularly and most of us know people in the town who have been helped by LNAA.

“These uniforms are not just a nice set of uniforms, they are protecting the medics. Our funding has bought a uniform that will look after the person looking after the patient.”

EXPECT RESPECT NOT ABUSE.

As the Trust faces increasing demand as winter approaches, they are urging patients and visitors to treat hospital staff with respect, emphasising that abuse - whether verbal or physical - will not be tolerated.

The call comes as the Trust's Emergency Department grapples with rising demand, following a week where twice as many patients were being treated in the Trust's Emergency Department than it was designed to care for.

The Trust recently launched an ‘Expect Respect, Not Abuse’ campaign that is encouraging Trust colleagues to report any incidents of physical or verbal abuse so that appropriate action can be taken, including refusing treatment or pursuing legal steps. Staff who report incidents will also be offered the support they deserve.

The campaign sheds light on the damaging effects that abusive behaviours from patients and visitors have on NHS staff. Shockingly, results from the Trust’s data revealed that on average 22 staff members reported being victims of violence and abuse each week.

The pressures on the Emergency Department are intense, with staff working tirelessly to provide urgent and emergency care to every patient. Yet, staff continue to experience abuse from patients and visitors.

Patients and visitors are being reminded that hospital staff deserve respect and not abuse, as winter pressures have begun to intensify at Sherwood Forest Hospitals Emergency Department

Results from the NHS National Staff survey suggest that staff are experiencing abuse but not reporting it. 78% of staff didn’t report their last experience of abuse, 29% of those being physical abuse incidents.

These incidents range from verbal insults and threats to severe physical attacks. Staff have been hit, spat at, threatened, and verbally and racially abused; some incidents are so severe that it has affected their ability to complete their job.

Beth Pascoe, a Staff Nurse in the Trust's Emergency Department, said: “We experience abuse daily. This includes verbal threats, racism, sexual harassment, and physical violence. The abuse our staff are subject to is unacceptable. Recently I was threatened by a patient and relative in my triage room. They shouted and screamed at me until I was backed against a wall questioning what I could do to protect myself.”

Rob Simcox, Director of People, said: "While the

vast majority of patients treat our hardworking NHS colleagues with civility and respect, we are clear that no healthcare professional should be subject to abuse in the workplace while they are working hard to keep our community healthy. It is unacceptable that they are met with violence and hostility when all they seek to do is provide care.

“We recognise that there is more work to be done and highlighting these stories gives us a platform for us to improve. The approach through the violence and aggression action plan shows our commitment to our people. Our people are here to help, and we are committed to supporting them.”

The ‘Expect Respect, Not Abuse’ campaign was launched as part of several actions being made by the Trust's internal Violence and Aggression Working Group. This group was established to address growing concerns about staff safety, develop strategies to reduce workplace violence, and provide staff with the information and training they need to

feel safe from harm while treating and caring for patients.

While the Trust recognises that some patients, especially those living with conditions like dementia, may have behaviour affected by their illness, it is crucial that all instances of violence and aggression are reported. The Trust’s dementia team has worked hard to educate staff on caring for these vulnerable patients, and by April 2025, Dementia Tier 1 training will be mandatory for all staff.

The Trust said it is committed to protecting its teams. Every incident of abuse will be reported, and appropriate action will be taken, including potentially refusing treatment or pursuing legal steps, to ensure the safety of Trust colleagues.

During this period of extraordinary pressure, the Trust appeals to the public to show patience and understanding, recognising the relentless efforts of NHS staff to deliver essential care.

Suffering from SAD?

TRY THESE EXPERT TIPS

As autumn settles in and the days grow darker, colder and wetter, the joy of summer is now a distant memory. If the shift in seasons is leaving you feeling low, rest assured you’re not alone – the NHS estimates that around 2 million people in the UK experience seasonal affective disorder each year.

Fatih Mustafa Çelebi, co-founder and CEO of Meditopia, an all-in-one mental health solution with personalised wellbeing support, has given his top tips to help you combat these feelings during this winter.

What is SAD?

Seasonal affective disorder, also known as SAD, is a type of depression that becomes apparent during certain seasons. Although it is more common to feel depressed during the winter months, it is also possible to experience.

SAD during the summer.

Symptoms can include a persistent low mood, heightened irritability, loss of interest in activities that used to bring joy, feeling worthless, and feeling lethargic. Although it is not fully understood what causes SAD, the most widely accepted theory is that it’s linked to reduced exposure to sunlight. This lack of sunlight may stop part of the brain known as the hypothalamus from working properly, impacting the production of melatonin, serotonin, and your internal clock.

Leave the house

One of the best and most effective ways to combat any form of depression is exercise. Although it can be tough to persevere in the colder months, the benefits are hard to deny.

Fatih claims that wrapping up warm and going for a walk is more than enough, ideally when there’s still some light outside. Listen to your favourite music, or pop on an interesting podcast and take a stroll around your neighbourhood. It can be as little as five minutes or as long as a few hours, but getting your body moving, having a change of scenery, and soaking up some well-needed sunlight will all help to fight off symptoms of SAD. Bringing a friend can be beneficial too, as when we start to feel depressed, it’s easy to become isolated. Grab a hot drink and use this time as an opportunity to catch up with a loved one.

Get ahead of the curve

If you know you suffer from SAD, it’s a good idea to prepare before the symptoms set in. Fatih recommends making a few concrete plans for the months when depression tends to affect you. These activities could be exciting and social, relaxing and personal, or a mix of both. He also warns that when you're feeling depressed, it's easy to lose motivation, so planning things

you'll genuinely enjoy when you're mentally well gives you something to look forward to.

Additionally, it may help to reschedule stressful activities and stock up on essential items, so you don’t need to go out and buy them later. Letting friends and family know how you feel ahead of time will also make a difference. It can be hard to reach out in the moment, so making your support network aware that you may struggle in the coming months will put less pressure on you, and ensure you’re still involved in daily conversations.

Create a routine

Although it's hard, creating a routine and sticking to it will help you immensely. Waking up at a set time or within a set time frame, making a nice drink, and taking a few moments to set yourself up for the day can be extremely beneficial. Create a small list of goals you want to achieve in your day and tick them off as you go. Try not to make the list too big, as that could overwhelm you. Going to bed at the same time each day will help your body clock to regulate itself, and make sure you’re getting enough sleep every day. Fatih suggests starting this routine early, as it will be far easier to stick to when winter is in full swing.

Other top tips from Fatih

Introduce more light into your environment – opening the curtains earlier, lighting a candle, or getting some battery-powered fairy lights can all combat the dark, with the latter two options also adding an element of cosiness into your home.

Keep a diary – this can help you identify what triggers your feelings and provides a private outlet to voice your feelings without being judged.

Try to keep a balanced diet – whilst it’s fine to drown your feelings in chocolate every now and then, try not to make a habit of it. Make sure you eat the right amount for your body and enjoy all foods in moderation.

Try light therapy - this is a treatment using a special light box, known as a SAD light, that mimics sunlight. The UV light is filtered out to prevent skin and eye damage, while the bright light stimulates the hypothalamus to lower melatonin and boost serotonin production.

Commenting on this advice, Fatih Mustafa Çelebi, co-founder and CEO of Meditopia said: “Seasonal affective disorder is more common than people think, and many may not even realise that it’s what they’re experiencing each year. Because symptoms tend to improve after a few months, many people go undiagnosed. These tips aren’t meant to be a miracle cure, but will hopefully ease the impact of SAD. If your symptoms become unmanageable, don’t hesitate to reach out to friends, family, or a healthcare professional to explore treatment options. Remember, there’s no shame in seeking help, and early intervention can make a big difference.”

A Beautiful Resting Place

Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. At the Willows Natural Burial Ground, the tranquil surroundings of wildflower meadows, woodland, and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.

The Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton, with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside, where people can be buried in hand dug graves in eco-friendly coffins or caskets, made of biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, wool or banana leaf to name a few. Conversely, their ashes can be buried or sub-surface scattered, either in bio-degradable urns or simply poured into or onto the ground.

A range of commemorative memorials are available, made of natural materials such as Welsh slate, and wood, while many people choose to remember their loved ones by planting a tree or native rose bush.

Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since

opening in 2011, inviting families of the buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at planting weekends. They recently purchased another 3,750 native British bluebell, snowdrop and daffodil bulbs, whilst simultaneously raising money for local charities.

The Willows caters for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, their fee includes provision of a small pop-up shelter, with limited seating and soft drinks for those attending.

The natural burial option is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation.

Chris and Jenny work with the family’s chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment. Chris says: “We’re very pleased with our progress, which we see as our contribution in giving something back to nature and the environment.”

Trees of Hope

The National Trust has announced Treetops Hospice as one of the recipients of the ‘Trees of Hope’ Sycamore Gap saplings being gifted to individuals, groups, and organisations across the UK.

The 49 ‘Trees of Hope’ have been grown from seed from the Sycamore Gap tree which formerly stood in the gap above Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland National Park, until it was illegally felled last September.

Treetops Hospice will plant the sapling on its 12.5-acre grounds in Risley, Derbyshire.

Julie Heath, Treetops Chief Executive, explained how delighted the hospice is to become part of the Sycamore Gap tree’s legacy:

“It’s a real honour for us to have been chosen to receive one of the ‘Trees of Hope’ to plant here at Treetops. Our grounds and gardens are incredibly important to us and play a vital role in the wellbeing of hundreds of our patients and counselling clients every year.

“Our grounds are also open to the general public and we hope they will visit the sapling when it is planted here next year.”

Nearly 500 applications were received for the 49 saplings – one to represent each foot in height that the tree was at the time of felling. The saplings are currently being cared for at the charity’s Plant Conservation Centre. They should be strong enough ready to plant out in winter 2025/26.

Andrew Poad, General Manager for the National Trust’s Hadrian Wall properties said: “Each and every application for a ‘Tree of Hope’ told heartfelt stories of people’s emotional connections to the Sycamore Gap tree and the importance of nature. They spoke of loss, hope and regeneration from all four corners of the country, from towns, schools, colleges, community groups, hospitals and hospices, it’s been a privilege to read them all.

“The tree meant so much to so many and through the ‘Trees of Hope’ initiative we are helping reach people across the nation, for generations to come. Each sapling will carry a message of hope with it as they start a new chapter not just for the tree but for all the 49 people and communities that will receive a sapling.”

The entries were judged by a panel of experts from the National Trust led by

independent judge and arboriculture specialist Catherine Nuttgens.

Catherine commented:

The original Sycamore Gap tree in Northumberland National Park

“The Sycamore is one of the most architecturally beautiful trees in our landscape. In summer, their dark green leaves create a canopy that looks almost like broccoli, while in winter, they create a silhouette that perfectly depicts what we think of when we think of a tree.

“The loss of any tree can evoke strong emotions - none more so than the Sycamore Gap tree. Its destruction felt utterly senseless, destroying the simple joy it brought to so many people for so many reasons. But the ‘Trees of Hope initiative has kept that sense of joy and hope alive, and it has been truly humbling to read through so many applications but a difficult task to select the final 49 recipients.

Treetops Hospice is doing all it can to continue to support those in most need. The charity welcomes donations to ensure the future of the hospice and its services: www.treetopshospice.org.uk/ donate
