Welcome back, Steven.
Last weekend we were delighted to have welcomed 4,849 to Carrow Road for our women’s team showpiece fixture against Cambridge United. Celebrating girls’ and women’s football in our county and improving the visibility of female role models is at the heart of our operations and it was warming to witness all the engaged fans throughout the match and those who stayed behind to meet the players. We value all your fantastic support.
Our opponents today, Haywards Heath, will be a new team to many in attendance. However, Haywards
Heath, formerly known as Crawley Wasps, visited The Nest last season in the league cup competition.
As we return to The Nest for today’s fixture, we are hoping to make The Nest our fortress this season, with opponents fearing the trip to Horsford. The passion from our fans will play a pivotal role in this and I would like to encourage our supporters to vocalise your support for our team in yellow and green.
Enjoy today’s game. OTBC.
“If you speak to any of the girls and me, the feeling is disappointment. We didn’t come here to draw, we came here to win by a couple of goals to nil and that isn’t an expectation from the first game where we beat them 5-0.
Cambridge came to Carrow Road and they did alright; first half they caused us problems, so we had to adapt and change formation, which helped us. But when I look at it, we’ve hit the bar, we’ve hit the post, we’ve had a one-on-one chance and after that Cambridge didn’t really have that many shots on Sarah Quants [Quantrill], she’s pretty much just a passer-by.
We just didn’t have that energy or that final pass to be able finish them off. When we got to 1-1, I genuinely thought we were going to go on and win it. Disappointment is the word but there is more to come from this team.
Despite the result I loved the day [as a whole]. I took it all in, when I walked out I thought wow it’s absolutely jam packed! I’m gutted we couldn’t send them home with three points but the atmosphere was brilliant. There wasn’t as much music on the day but the fans filled that noise and hopefully a few of them can come to The Nest and get about 500-600

there, but it was superb. The girls loved it but just sorry we couldn’t get the result for the fans.
By this point early on in the season we wanted 10 points, with that extra two points I would’ve been delighted. However, including the friendlies, that’s six games unbeaten, won four and drawn two, we don’t know at the end of the season, we might look back at this and go do you know what, in that 30-degree heat, we got a player who’s down at the end nearly passing out – that’s how much they put into this, they fought to the end.
Wimbledon have dropped points, London Seaward have dropped points, we’re the only team who hasn’t lost at the top, but there will be better days to come, I’ll promise you that.
We’re not letting many goals in and we’re still unbeaten, we just have to make sure if Tash doesn’t score that other people are putting goals in. We were so close on the day, 2-1 probably would’ve been a fair reflection but we’ll take our medicine and take the point and well keep moving forward to Haywards Heath.”
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 CARROW ROAD
Norwich City welcomed around 5,000 fans to a sweltering Carrow Road in their second FAWNL fixture at the stadium in five months.
The first 10 minutes were calm and collected from both sides, with neither getting a look in at goal.
Natasha Snelling was fouled 30 yards out to win a free-kick but the subsequent set-piece reached United’s Lauren Webb, who punched the ball to safety.
City had a convincing press just before 15 minutes as Megan Todd broke free from the U’s defence and slotted a ball to Rachel Lawrence on the wing, but she lost control of the ball and United regained possession.
Cambridge had their first attempt soon after following a corner, where Isabella Simmons was able to get her head on the end of the ball in, but her effort went high over the bar.
Sarah Quantrill leapt into action just after 20 minutes, following an effort that rattled the bar and the rebound going goalward.
The following corner then got the game started, as Simmons found herself in a scramble in the box, tapping home from close-range to put the U’s ahead after 22 minutes.
Captain Anna Larkins delivered a long ball into the box to lay-up Snelling in the box just past the halfhour mark, but the cross fell just long and Webb collected with ease.
Alice Parker came closest for the Canaries in the first half, after Snelling was fouled on the edge of the box and won the Yellows a free-kick. The Norwich number four stepped up and curled a shot just high of the mark.
Lawrence was inspired by her effort minutes after and broke free from her defender to shoot from outside the box, but fired just high.
In the dying seconds of the half, Snelling was perfectly placed but her shot rattled the crossbar and was cleared.
Into the second half and the Canaries were taking charge. It took all of two minutes for them to change the score line as Ellie Smith was fouled in the box to win a penalty.
Todd stepped up and converted from the spot to make it 1-1 at 47 minutes.
Larkins made a strong block in the box to deny Ruth Fox’s shot from hitting the target shortly after.
Fox had another go from range after the hour mark but Quantrill was there to comfortably save.
Shaw looked close to Norwich’s second when she stole the ball on the edge of the box, but her shot was blocked away by Webb for corner.
Neither sides were able to find the winner and the match ended with the points shared.
This week’s feature interview is with new recruit Rachel Lawrence, who joined the club at the start of the summer as one of seven new signings. The 20 year-old winger came from Peterborough United, having also gained experience back home at Leicester City.
How have you settled into life at Norwich City?
I’d say I’ve settled in well so far to Norwich, the girls have been really welcoming and I’ve been enjoying the football and getting to know the team.
Are there any girls in particular who you look up to and who have been most supportive since you joined, being one of the younger players here?
In particular I’d say Megan Todd has been really helpful in my move, in the way she leads the team I can look to her for advice or motivation, and she’s a player I can learn so much from in how she plays also on the wing.
What was it like for you playing at Carrow Road last week for the first time?
Playing at Carrow Road last week was an experience I am hugely grateful for and showed a lot in how far women’s football has come.
You got to see and meet some Norwich fans when we were at Carrow Road - what was that like signing autographs and chatting to them?
Meeting the fans last weekend was amazing. Being able to inspire the next generation is so incredible, and to see this through meeting and talking to them brings the whole club together. It shows what we can achieve and what it means to everyone.

Have you had to adapt your style of play much with our head coach Martin in charge?
My style of play I’d say is something I’m still learning. The way Martin wants the team to become is something I can see myself fitting into but I still have so much to learn to do this as best I can.
During your time at Leicester you made your debut against Manchester United. Just tell us what that was like, playing against one of the biggest giants in football and with it being your debut match?
My experiences at Leicester taught me a lot, and my debut in particular is something I’ll never forget. Playing against big teams teaches you so much even just from one match, and it is inspiring to be around players that have put everything into being the best they can.
What are your personal goals for the season?
My personal goals for the season involve improving myself as much as I can, and in doing so, being able to help the team and push us to see how far we can achieve.
We’re back at The Nest for our third home game in as many Sundays, as we welcome Haywards Heath Town in today’s FAWNL Division One South East fixture.
Our visitors, previously known as Crawley Wasps, were taken under the wing of The Blues in the hope of sparking a new era of success.
The 2022/23 campaign saw the side relegated from the Southern Premier Division in the third tier, after finishing 12 points from safety, picking up just one win and four draws in the season.
Billy Wood’s side have had a tough start to this season, with no points from their
opening three games. They lost out 3-1 to Ashford Town, 4-0 to Cambridge United and 2-0 to Worthing.
Their one goal of the campaign so far came from Ilana Harris-Walters.
These two sides met back in October last year at The Nest in the FAWNL Plate, where the Wasps ran out 4-1 winners.
City went ahead through Olivia Cook inside two minutes, but the Canaries then had their backs against the wall for the remainder of the game and the visitors capitalised through Holly Talbut-Smith, Selin Buyukgiray and Amelia Ajao (x2).
