Good evening and welcome back to The Nest as we face AFC Sudbury in FA WNL action under the lights.
Tonight marks our second fixture at home in a week, with another brilliant opportunity to secure three points as we look to continue building on our positive momentum and put pressure on those around us in the table.
Last Sunday’s victory against Chatham Town was a real statement of intent, with a fantastic performance to secure maximum points from the side who currently occupy top spot.
Another congratulations goes to our head coach, Andy Cook, who has been nominated for FA WNL manager of the month for January, which is testament to the hard work both he and the entire backroom staff put in on a daily basis.
After this evening’s game, we have a short break in our fixture schedule and we are next back at home on Sunday the 23rd when we face Chesham United at the Nest.
Enjoy this evenings game! OTBC.
When you win, you don’t get too high and when you lose, you don’t get too low.
We caught up with head coach Andy Cook after an empathic win over Chatham Town and discussed how the squad would prepare for a quick turnaround against AFC Sudbury this evening.
We’re absolutely delighted to get another three points on the board after a tough game late last week against Bedford, so to get a point there and then three against Chatham, we’re really pleased.
We’ve got to make sure that we are recovered well for Sudbury. The players know that we will be changing a few bits around on Tuesday night to make sure that everyone is as fresh as possible. We’ve got a big squad, we’ve got some very good players, some even who have been involved recently that I actually moved out of the squad of 16.
So, everyone is going to be motivated to go again on Tuesday, we just need to make sure that we are fully focused to get ready for a new game.
It doesn’t matter who we are playing, we want to celebrate every result in the same manner. When you win, you don’t get too high and when you lose, you don’t get too low.
That’s been my mantra for years now and we
just want to continue this moment and this form that we’re in. We very much focus on the present and working on what we’re doing and that was the message before the game.
The girls went out and performed brilliantly, I thought the first half was fantastic, we were just talking in the huddle about the moment where Sienna (Booty) has turned, switched the ball and played a lovely ball for (Olivia) Cook on the right.
There were several other moments that were great; Holly’s finish at the end there was brilliant. We could go through the team and pick out loads of great moments, but that is where the squad is, there are lots of players chomping at the bit to get the opportunity and they will on Tuesday night against a good Sudbury side.
For us to rest and recover now, it’s actually quite easy. We’ve got excellent facilities down at the Avant Training Centre, so we can get players in the recovery pool and we will look at the analysis from today.
Holly Kennard was at the double for Norwich City on Sunday afternoon, as they beat out league-leaders Chatham Town 2-1 at The Nest.
The winger found the opener in the first half and responded immediately after an equaliser from the visitors, helping the Canaries to an unbeaten run of five league games.
Andy Cook named an unchanged starting 11 from the side that picked up a point away to Real Bedford last weekend.
Both sides had opportunities inside five minutes to open the scoring, Sarah Quantrill making two comfortable saves to deny the visitors.
A corner for City required a clearance off the line and a goalmouth scramble was eventually collected by Simone Eligon in goal.
After just six minutes, Norwich found the opener, a great long throw from Olivia Cook making it’s way into the box and helped on by a Chatham defender, setting up Kennard nicely to nod the ball over the line.
The Canaries continued to pressure Town, a lovely strike from Natasha
Snelling outside the area forcing Eligon to make a diving punch away to stop a second for City.
Freya Symonds then tried her luck with two efforts, one at an awkward angle that rolled narrowly wide and another powerful strike that was collected by Eligon.
The second half opened with more attacking play from the visitors, who had successive shots at goal, but nothing to trouble Quantrill.
Snelling played a brilliant ball to Kennard on the break, whose effort didn’t have quite enough on it to challenge the hosts’ stopper.
With less than 20 minutes left on the clock, the visitors enjoyed a spell of possession and eventually found their equaliser, an angled header from a corner hitting the back of the net.
It didn’t take long for City to regain the lead though, as Symonds played a brilliant ball to Kennard who smashed a shot in off the post with ten minutes to go.
City stayed in control of the game and saw out the win in what was a big result for the Canaries.
Amber Locker is in the spotlight this weekend for an exclusive feature interview, where she discusses learning from the best, her development since joining the senior team and reflects on the season so far.
Many fans will see you at every game, home or away as you play your part in the build-up to matchdays. How do you see your role as our back-up goalkeeper?
The build-up to matchdays are so important right from the start, which is why it is vital for me to be involved in them, as not only does it help prepare everyone as best as possible but also allows me to keep my eye in, constantly having touches on the ball and also to know exactly what to expect when it comes to a matchday. Being the second choice ‘keeper, you never know when I could be needed therefore it’s vital that I stay connected with the squad.
Playing and training alongside Sarah Quantrill, you must be learning a lot as you develop as a player. What is it like having her as a role model?
Being able to train alongside Quants has been great for my development as a player. The experience that she has and is able to share with me is so important, as you can’t teach it. We also are able to have that competitiveness in training as although I am a younger goalkeeper, she knows she is able to test me just as much as anyone else.
You made your debut for the club in last month’s County Cup tie against Aylsham. How
pleased were you finding out you were getting the call-up, or was this always something Andy was always preparing you for?
I was very pleased when I found out about my call-up for the Aylsham game as I knew that Andy and Jake were working with me to get me to a point where I felt confident to go out and feel comfortable whilst doing so. I think that the team’s performance against Aylsham was brilliant especially with some great debuts from Poppy and Drew. I think that really highlighted that the future for Norwich is so bright.
Talk to us about your time on loan with Needham so far this season?
My time at Needham was great, it was so beneficial to me to get back to playing regularly
and to be back into that game day mindset. It was super easy to be a part of their squad as they were an amazing group of players. I believe the whole experience has brought me so much confidence as a player to be able to go straight into an environment that’s unfamiliar and perform to a high standard.
You joined the club like many others now from our academy development programme. Tell us a little bit about your time there and how exciting it was for you to join the senior team last year?
For me being a part of the development programme was amazing. The coaching was second to none and was a massive part of my development as a player. I got to play alongside most of those girls for six or seven years, and they were such a great bunch.
We just have to keep pushing and remembering what we are working towards and I think we have done that flawlessly.
At Under-15 level you also attended an FA Talent Camp to earn an England call-up - tell us a little bit about that experience too?
My time at the FA talents camps were great, being able to be coached by some of the best in the country as well as meeting so many new people with such amazing talent. For me, it was daunting at first, however all of these experiences have made me the player I am now. My confidence to go and be in different situations and adapt to then has been one of the biggest takeaways from that experience.
Finally, it’s been a really busy season already and we’ve had some great results; how do you reflect on the first half of our 2024/25 campaign?
I think the first half of the season the girls have been brilliant. Not just on matchdays but behind the scenes at training. This goes for everyone, with the coaches putting in copious amounts of effort to give us the best possible chances. For the squad, that means we just have to keep pushing and remembering what we are working towards and I think we have done that flawlessly.

This evening we welcome AFC Sudbury to The Nest for our first home mid-week fixture of the season.
The Suds are now into their second season of Division One South East football, having been promoted at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.
Based in Suffolk, our visitors travel just over 50 miles from sixth place, three points behind the Canaries.
In 14 fixtures, they have collected six wins, with five draws and three losses.
Sunday’s outing saw them lose out to Cambridge United in a 2-0 loss on home turf.
The Yellows have picked up big results against high-flying Actonians, where a 1-1 draw away from home was secured with the help of a goal from Eva Frazzoni as well as an impressive win at Champion Hill against Dulwich Hamlet.
Jessica Allen is top scorer with nine goals so far this season, last netting against Ashford Town in October.
These two sides last met under the lights in a 1-1 draw at The Mel Group Stadium in September, Tamsin Medd-Gill and Jessica Allen on the scoresheet for each side.
