Hello Everyone,

Holiday season is in full swing. What a wonderful time of year! I’m very glad many of our neighbors decided to put out their Christmas lights early this year. Driving home from work during these darker winter days is so much nicer with everyone’s Christmas cheer on display for all to enjoy.

Your Board is nearing the close of another year of service to Northwood Club. I am extremely proud to be associated with this group of fine members. We’ve approached every aspect of our governance with a true spirit of collaboration and shared devotion to our beloved Club. Everyone has freely shared their gifts and talents to work together, solve problems and plan for a very bright future.

I hope you are all able to slow down a bit and enjoy what is truly important in life family coming together under one roof, sharing special holiday recipes and meals together, honoring family traditions we wish to pass along to our younger folks and making fun new memories to cherish in the years to come.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas,

Anne Voisinet

Christmas Carolers will entertain members, again, this year at the Santa Brunch on December 22.

Santa will come to Northwood to spread some holiday cheer at the Family Christmas Party on December 14 and the Santa Brunch on December 22.

GENERAL MANAGER | Jon Davis

Hi Northwood, and welcome to Holiday Season 2024. I simply cannot believe how quickly this year has gone by and that a new year is coming up soon. We still have much to celebrate throughout December, and with so much going on, the December newsletter will stand on its own. However, we will be back to a bimonthly issue for Jan / Feb.

As I write this, Thanksgiving is right around the corner. I hope that, by the time you read this, you will have enjoyed our wonderful Thanksgiving buffet or tried some of our takeout items which are always a hit.

Our Christmas calendar is packed this year, as usual, with all sorts of events which include special activities for the membership. Please reference the calendar for further information. There is lots of great fun planned for the whole family.

Please remember that the Club will close at 3:00 p.m. On Christmas Eve to allow the staff to head home to be with their families, and we will be closed on Christmas Day. We will be open all day and for dinner service on New Year’s Eve; however, we will be closed on New Year’s Day.

We hope you continue to enjoy celebrating this holiday season at Northwood with your family and friends and look forward to seeing you at the Club.

He always greets everyone with a smile, overflowing with enthusiasm and innovative ideas. He ensures that everything runs smoothly― whether it's a small gathering, a large wedding, a homecoming celebration, a birthday lunch or a holiday party.

DIRECTOROFMEMBERSHIP

Hello Northwood Club Members!

Thank you all so much for the warm welcome. I have enjoyed meeting a lot of you over past month, and look forward to meeting many others in the months ahead.

As we transition toward the end of the year, I want to start by thanking all of the members who have sponsored new members into the Club this year, along with those who have a nominee currently going through the vetting process. We realize this takes a little time and effort on your part, but your support and dedication help keep Northwood’s membership healthy and vibrant.

As a reminder, we are at full capacity in our Resident, Resident in Waiting, Junior and Social categories. All nominees upon completing the vetting process are invited to join the Social waiting list and will become Social Members as they wait for a membership opening in the category of their application. the starting point for every new Member. have questions about wait times or the membership process in general, please do not hesitate to reach out, as I am happy to help every step of the way.

Please also take a moment to review the membership nominee lists around the clubhouse. Because we take the Northwood vetting process seriously, a minimum of 15 letters is required, and you never know for who you might be able to write a letter of recommendation for.

After being here only a short time, it warms my heart to see how important family and friends are to the Northwood Members. A family-friendly club is the first step in developing lifelong friendships that span generations.

Enjoy the holiday season, spread some holiday cheer, and I look forward to seeing everyone in 2025.

Many thanks,

Dear members,

10 Tips to Keep the Holiday Pounds Off

The holiday season, with its festive feasts, treats, and celebrations, can be a challenging time to maintain a healthy weight. However, by implementing strategic methods, you can enjoy the season without facing unwanted weight gain. Here are 10 proven approaches to staying on track, alongside some strategies for rewarding yourself, setting commitments, and building self-discipline.

1. Set a Realistic Goal and Track Your Progress

Define your holiday health goals upfront. Whether it's to maintain your current weight or simply avoid overeating, setting specific and achievable goals helps you remain focused. Use a journal or an app to track your weight, food intake, and even mood throughout the season. Tracking progress can reinforce your commitment and help you identify areas where adjustments are needed.

Reward Tip: Celebrate small victories, like skipping dessert at one party or meeting a workout goal. These rewards can be non-food-related, such as watching a favorite movie or buying something small for yourself.

2. Practice Portion Control with High-Calorie Foods

During holiday gatherings, there’s often an abundance of high-calorie foods. To avoid overeating, serve yourself small portions and savor each bite. Remember that you can still enjoy your favorite foods in moderation. Opt for smaller plates, and avoid going back for seconds which will help to limit overall calorie intake.

Commitment Contract: Make a personal agreement with a friend or family member to stick to your portion limits. Commit to holding each other accountable, which can increase your success rate.

3. Swap High-Calorie Foods for Healthier Alternatives

Look for ways to modify classic holiday dishes or choose healthier options. For instance, try using Greek yogurt in creamy dips instead of mayonnaise, or bake with less sugar. If you’re at a buffet, choose fresh vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, which can help keep your plate balanced.

Alternative Choices: Swap mashed potatoes for cauliflower mash, choose whole-grain bread over rolls, or serve dark chocolate instead of sugary desserts.

4. Choose Low-Calorie or Non-Alcoholic Beverages

Holiday cocktails can be calorie-dense, especially those with added sugar. Opt for lighter versions or nonalcoholic alternatives. Wine spritzers, sparkling water with a splash of juice, or flavored water can be festive, (Continued next page)

but lower in calories. Limiting alcohol also helps prevent impulsive eating decisions that are common after a few drinks.

5. Stick to a Regular Exercise Routine

Keeping up with regular exercise is essential for managing weight and boosting your mood during the holidays. Schedule workouts like you would appointments, making them non-negotiable parts of your routine. Even a brisk walk after a holiday meal can aid digestion and prevent fat storage.

Commitment Contract: Pair up with a friend for accountability. Consider signing a short-term gym or class pass if traveling, keeping you active despite a different routine.

6. Prioritize Sleep

Sleep plays a critical role in weight management. Lack of sleep can lead to increased hunger and a craving for high-calorie foods. Aim for 7–8 hours of rest each night, even during busy holiday periods. This will help maintain balanced energy and reduce the likelihood of overeating due to fatigue.

Self-Reward Idea: Set a goal for consistent sleep, and if you meet it, treat yourself to a relaxing self-care activity, like a spa day or a round of golf.

7. Practice Mindful Eating

Slow down and savor each bite of holiday foods. This helps you enjoy flavors and feel satisfied with less food. Paying attention to hunger and fullness cues can prevent mindless eating, especially in social situations.

8. Prepare and Share Healthier Dishes

When attending gatherings, bring a healthier dish to share. This ensures there’s at least one nutritious option available and gives you the chance to control your intake. Examples include a veggie platter, lean protein skewers, or a whole-grain salad.

9. Build Self-Discipline and Willpower

The holiday season is a perfect time to strengthen your willpower and self-discipline. Start with small challenges, such as declining one dessert or practicing a 5-minute daily meditation to stay mindful. Each positive choice strengthens your resolve, building resilience against tempting situations.

Long-Term Benefit: Building self-discipline during the holidays sets the stage for year-round healthier habits, allowing you to approach future celebrations with confidence.

10. Allow Occasional Indulgences without Guilt

Enjoying your favorite holiday treats in moderation can help avoid feelings of deprivation, which often lead to overeating later. Treat yourself to small portions of high-calorie favorites without guilt. Balance out these indulgences by making healthier choices at other meals and prioritizing exercise.

Reward Tip: For each mindful indulgence, acknowledge your effort to stay balanced. Consider jotting down a few positive notes about your choices, reinforcing your ability to make thoughtful decisions.

In

Summary

Preventing holiday weight gain is about making consistent, mindful choices. Strategies like portion control, healthier swaps, commitment contracts, and regular exercise allow you to enjoy the season without overindulgence. By reinforcing self-discipline and rewarding small victories, you can maintain control and enter the new year feeling your best.
