March/April 2025
Hello Northwood!
Thank you very much for the opportunity and privilege to serve as Northwood’s 79th President for 2025 Northwood is a second home to over 1,800 members and I truly recognize the gravity and importance of this office. Two months into my term seem a tad late to be expressing such thoughts; however, I do pledge to all of you to endeavor to execute my duties as President at the very highest level.
On behalf of the entire Northwood community, I thank and congratulate our Past President Anne Voisinet for an exemplary term as 2024 President The 2024 year, culminating with our Annual Meeting on January 21, 2025, was very busy, exciting and, at times, emotionally charged as we marched the Clubhouse and Pool Terrace capital project to a successful January vote
Over 440 Resident Northwood members voted 84% participation – a Northwood record! 290 Residents voted “FOR” the New Clubhouse, Event Lawn & Pool Grille A 66% super majority – another Northwood record!
Thank you to all the many, many member volunteers who donated thousands of hours to the Strategic Planning Committee and to the hundreds upon hundreds of Northwood members from all categories who engaged in the memberdriven process Northwood leadership promised you. Thank you to all of Northwood’s management and staff who also poured countless hours in to attending design meetings and providing critical feedback
Once again, thank you, Northwood and thank you, Anne, for your tireless commitment, perseverance and leadership to our generational, transformative Northwood Clubhouse project I look forward to working with you, our Presidentelect Alan Page, our incredibly talented and committed Board of Governors, and all of Northwood - for a successful 2025. This year will, once again, be very busy and exciting, and … it’s going to be awesome!
Rives E Castleman

It’s time once again for an aerification of the greens as we approach spring and the beginning of our golfing season The weather wasn’t cooperative for our original date on February 10th, and we ended up being delayed a couple of weeks This is such a crucial task to ensure we have the healthiest turf conditions going into spring and summer It has now been completed and with help from Mother Nature, they will heal in soon
Many of you are familiar with our aerification process as it hasn’t changed much since reopening the course after the 2017 renovation We have been able to aerate earlier in the year (February) and later in the year (November) for our more aggressive “punch” or aerification due to our newer and improved variety of bentgrass The bentgrass variety is 007 and while it was developed to better adapt to the Texas heat, it’s still a cool season grass that grows through the colder months and especially grows well in late February and early November. That’s why we choose these dates for our aeration. The greens recover or heal quicker when they are actively and aggressively growing. These larger aerations allow us to have less disruption on the greens during the better golfing months like March and April. This first aerification and the one performed in November are the largest holes that we will punch in the green, everything else the rest of the growing season will be small and much less disruptive, but equally as important
So why do we aerate? Aeration is important for a few reasons First, removing aerification plugs or cores from the green removes organic matter from the green We view organic matter as kind of the waste product from a growing season as the bentgrass leaves and roots decompose or sediment accumulates onto the green A green mostly consists of sand to keep a good balance of air and water within the sand particles to sustain a healthy turf When it rains these sand constructed greens will drain well and keep the green from being overly saturated or unplayable. Organic matter holds water and nutrients and is beneficial up to a certain point. Roughly 15% to 30% of organic matter in a green is acceptable, however if unmitigated it can increase over the years into harmful accumulations.
If we never aerated then we wouldn’t be physically able to remove the organic matter that builds up each year. Eventually the excessive Organic material would begin clogging up the system and the greens wouldn’t perform as well. We are successfully able to keep the organic matter percent in check by frequently aerating, removing the plugs, and filling in the holes with sand. This keeps the mechanics of the greens operating and ultimately extends the overall life of the greens.
Second, aeration helps relieve compaction It’s said that the typical golfer takes roughly 50 steps on a green Multiply that by the 31,000 rounds Northwood typically receives annually and that equates to over 15 million steps per green Not to mention caddies, maintenance employees and the compaction from mowers So relieving this compaction in the soil allows the sand particles beneath the surface to unpack allowing more air or oxygen to be present for the root system Also, with these fractures in the root zone, water can penetrate deeper within the green resulting in better greens drainage during periods of heavy rain.
Lastly, when the greens are opened up with thousands of small holes, we are able to get necessary fertilizers and soil amendments worked into the holes to reach the area where the roots typically thrive.
Typically mid-March towards the end of April is what we target for carts to return back to the fairways. The indicator of when it’s time is when we make our second mowing on the fairways. This usually means that the grass is now actively growing and it can sustain and recover from cart traffic. Sometimes, a poor weather forecast can extend this even further and keep the carts on the path to limit damage from periods of rainfall
I can think of one big project coming up, but it doesn't affect the golf course too much this year However, the new clubhouse project will have some impact in early 2026 and we will be discussing that heavily as it approaches For now, we don’t have any major projects on the horizon as it relates to the course, but the landscape maintenance crew will have some involvement with landscaping the new pickle ball courts later this year.
Stay warm and spring will be here soon!

My name is Chef Zac, and while my passion for cooking has defined much of my life, I’ve always believed that true excellence whether in the kitchen or on the trails comes from discipline, perseverance, and an unyielding pursuit of personal growth. As both a chef and an endurance athlete, I find parallels between the precision and preparation required in cooking and the grit needed to conquer long-distance races. This mindset led me to take on the formidable Black Canyon 100K, a 62-mile ultramarathon with over 7,000 feet of vertical gain and 9,500 feet of descent, set against the rugged terrain of Arizona’s Sonoran Desert Just like in the kitchen, where organization and adaptability are key, endurance racing demands strategy, resilience, and the ability to push through unexpected challenges This race tested my limits, but it also reinforced my belief that with the right preparation and mindset, anything is possible
What inspired you to take on this challenge?
I have always wanted to tackle the Ultra-Competitive Black Canyon 100K (62 miles) Trail Race, with over 7,000 feet of vertical gain and 9,500 feet of descent it is a true test of your endurance It is also renowned for its beauty and rugged challenging terrain, taking place in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona
What is your training like and how did you prepare?
Over the last year I consistently ran every day for 365 days around 45 miles a week. Starting in November I began adding in higher volume, topping out around 80 miles a week. My go to workouts were back-to-back long runs on Sundays & Mondays Usually, consisting of a 2830 mile run on the trails at Cedar Ridge Preserve and 1618 miles around White Rock Lake I also added a lot of upper body strength training and core workouts; I worked up to 6,000 pushups every month to get my core strength solid
Ultra Marathons are among the toughest competitive challenges in endurance sports. What challenges did you encounter that you didn’t plan for, and how did you overcome?
Wow, this is so true! It is a VERY long day out there on the trails… I finished in 16 hours and 56 minutes which qualified me for the Western States 100-mile Lottery. To achieve this, it required lots of race day management and decision making. It was a very unseasonably hot day, and it took a major toll on all the runners. I experienced heat distress and extreme dehydration in the hottest part of the day. I was unable to ingest calories for over 5 hours which slowed my pace considerably. I had to be very mindful on hydrating and making sure to get electrolytes on board I feel like Ultras end up being an eating competition as well! Once the sun was setting and temps cooled off, I was able to eat and pick up the pace ending up sprinting for the last 3 miles to make my 17-hour goal.
How does your training and competition bleed over into your profession as the greatest Chef in the world … of Northwood?
Thanks! I feel like being a chef is a perfect skill set for these types of events. Dedication and hard work are a must! It takes extensive planning and organization along with execution to be successful in both arenas. We call this concept “Mise en Place” in the kitchen which translates to “everything in its place” so this matches to the planning needed to train and execute on race day. Also, lots of time on your feet is critical for long days on the trail or at work.
What’s next for your next big adventure?
I feel like the next big adventure for me will obviously be the new clubhouse, and I am so excited for this challenge ahead!!
If there is time, I am considering climbing Mount Rainer, this time by the Kautz Route. A technical ice climbing route consisting of AI2-3 Grade II-III; Ice, Alpine, ascent of 9,000 ft.
Zac Wilbur Executive Chef
