As a non-profit organization, TSMH recognizes its responsibilities to serve the community. Our commitment to serve is demonstrated in numerous ways: • Hospital governance is provided by a 13 member Board of Directors, who receive no compensation for their service.

• The Emergency Room treats all patients regardless of their ability to pay.

• The Hospital provides funds to support a variety of community organizations and activities.

• The Hospital operates the school nurse programs in elementary, junior high, and high school in Asotin.

• Our Charity Care Program provides financial assistance to qualified patients to help with hospital expenses.

6 Tips for Eating Right in 2016 SAVOR THE FLAVOR OF EATING RIGHT In honor of National Nutrition Month which is in March every year, here are six easy tips to get you on the path to a healthier lifestyle!

Eat Breakfast

Start your morning with a healthy breakfast every day by including lean protein, whole grains, fruit, and vegetables.

Sound like a lot? Try making a breakfast burrito with scrambled eggs, low-fat cheese, and salsa on a whole wheat tortilla. Or, mix up a parfait with low-fat plain yogurt, fruit, and whole grain cereal.

Watch Portion Sizes

Recommended serving sizes are often times smaller than our “best guess.” Break out the measuring cups to make sure you can see what one serving of whole grain cereal (1 cup) looks like in your dishes at home. Want to trick your brain into thinking a single portion is more? Use a smaller dish!

Fix Healthy Snacks

It is easy to sabotage your healthy lifestyle by quickly getting something from the vending machines at school or work. Do yourself, and your waistline, a favor by packing healthy snacks to keep on hand to help sustain energy levels between meals. Try raw veggies with low-fat cottage cheese, or a tablespoon of peanut butter with apple slices.

Get Cooking

When you have control over the cooking process, you can make sure you are adding only the best ingredients and cooking in the healthiest way. Don’t know how to cook? Start with some basics and add to your knowledge over time and you will be on your way to being a home chef in no time. Drink More Water

Your body is comprised of approximately 60 percent water and you need to replace what is used and eliminated every day! Drink even more water when you are active, live or work in hot conditions, or are an older adult. Drinking water also helps you to feel full and can help control cravings when you are trying to make better choices in nutrition.

Cut Back on Added Sugars

When considering your food and drinks, make sure you are aware of added sugars which contribute empty calories and little or no nutrition. Become a reader of food labels to catch those sneaky added sugars that can wreak havoc on your health.

Healthy Snacks + Fun Activities = Happy, Healthy Kids!

Tri-State Hospital Registered Dietician Nutritionists Jennifer Raykovich and Chelsey Woods were on hand October 15, 2015 to show 4th, 5th, and 6th graders at Holy Family School in Clarkston, Washington good nutrition education, how to make their own healthy snacks, and fun activities to get their bodies moving. This fun, energy-filled event was well received by the kids who left that day with their own kid’s cookbooks, kid-sized aprons, measuring cups and spoons, and many tips on making better nutrition choices. This event was sponsored through Tri-State Hospital Foundation by a grant from Clearwater Paper Corporation.

What is a Critical Access Hospital?

You may have heard some hospitals called Critical Access Hospitals or CAH’s. But, what exactly is a Critical Access Hospital? This designation is given to certain rural hospitals by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. It was created by Congress in 1997 in response to a string of hospital closures in the 1980s and 1990s. Rural hospitals typically have a very high percentage of Medicare patients (referred to as “payer mix”). Prior to the CAH program, rural hospitals were under the Prospective Payment System (PPS) and were only reimbursed 40 to 60 cents for one dollar of cost – not what was billed, but actual cost. Hence, rural hospitals could not sustain services in their communities under the Prospective Payment System, which resulted in many closing during that time and leading to the passage of the CAH program.

The CAH designation was designed to reduce the financial vulnerability of rural hospitals and improve access to healthcare by keeping essential services in rural communities, accomplished through cost-based Medicare reimbursements.

Specific requirements must be met to qualify for the CAH designation, such as have 25 or fewer acute care inpatient beds, providing 24/7 emergency care service, having an annual average length of stay of no more than 96 hours for acute care, and located in a rural community. Tri-State applied for and became a Critical Access Hospital in 2004. As of January, 2016, there were 1,332 Critical Access Hospitals located in the US; 39 of them located in Washington State.

Critical Access Hospitals provide essential health care services to nearly 51 million people. Because of their size, modest assets and financial reserves, and higher percentages of Medicare patients, small and rural hospitals disproportionately rely on government payments. The CAH program has been a life-line for many hospitals across the country and has allowed them to survive and continue their health care missions to the communities they serve. Over the last few years, the CAH program has come under scrutiny from the President’s budget to CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) for a variety of reasons. The CAH program has changed and reimbursements have been reduced through this program; but, overall, it remains intact due to continued work to educate congress on the need and value that rural hospitals bring to their communities.

Did you know?

One thing that makes Tri-State Memorial Hospital different from other community-owned hospitals (as well as most CAHs) in Washington State is that we do not have any property taxes funding our services at Tri-State. That is to say, we are not a Public Hospital District that receives revenue from taxes in our community. Because of the financial support offered by our generous community to the Foundation and the leadership and forward-thinking planning of our volunteer Hospital Board of Directors, Tri-State continues to prosper without having to access property taxes in our community.

Dr. Iacobelli joined us from his own successful practice in Fenton, MI. Graduating from Wayne State University with a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor of Medicine, he completed his residency at Genesys Regional Medical Center Family Practice in June 2002 where he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Iacobelli serves all ages in our Family Practice with special interests in pediatrics, thyroid, blood clotting disorders, liver disease, and diagnostic medicine.

Dr. Seeber finished his residency at Genesys Regional Medical Center and is board certified in Family Medicine.

He graduated from Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica, West Indies with his Medical Doctorate and his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, N.B., Canada.

Dr. Seeber enjoys spending time with his family, competitive sports, longdistance running, and golf.

Dr. Afzal attended King Edward Medical College in Pakistan and received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 2003. He then studied Internal Medicine as an intern at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Odessa, TX, where he also completed his residency in Internal Medicine.

He continued his training as a Fellow in Rheumatology at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX. He is board certified through the American Board of Internal Medicine. With extensive training in the treatment of arthritis, inflammatory diseases, and advanced areas of Rheumatology, Dr. Zeeshan Afzal is currently accepting new referral patients!

Dr. Zobell is a board certified Urologist and has been serving as a locum tenens provider for Tri-State Urology prior to accepting a permanent position. He earned his medical degree at the University of Utah Medical School and completed his internship and residency in urology and general surgery at the University. He has an extensive career and brings more than 20 years of experience in urology. He treats diseases of the male and female urinary tract and male reproductive organs.

He also has a special interest and background in treating pediatric urology patients.

He is currently accepting new patients of all ages!

In honor and memory of Dr. Richard J. Weiland, Jr. May 6, 1947 - February 20, 2015

Tri-State Memorial Hospital lost a treasured provider in 2015 with the passing of Dr. Weiland in February.

Dr. Weiland was raised in Pomeroy, Washington and graduated from Gonzaga University and then University of Washington, where he received his medical degree in 1973. On September 11, 1971 he married Jenny and they had their daughter Angie in 1975.

Dr. Weiland went on to do his residency and worked in emergency medicine for a time. In December 1984, the family moved to Clarkston where Dr. Weiland opened his private practice in 1985. In March 2011, Dr. Weiland became an employee of TriState Memorial Hospital as a primary care provider, where he worked full-time until his hospitalization in November, 2014.

Besides being adored by his patients at Tri-State, Dr. Weiland also was the medical director of Home Health and Hospice (now Elite Home Health and Hospice) for 28 years, and the medical director of Prestige Care Center in Clarkston. He also served nine years on the Tri-State Hospital Board of Directors. He is truly missed by his patients, his colleagues, and this community.

If you are at risk for type 2 diabetes, Tri-State Memorial Hospital’s Diabetes Prevention Program provides a supportive environment. You can work with others in a small group setting to learn how to adopt healthy habits to reduce your chances of developing the disease.

The program, which is led by a trained Lifestyle Coach in a classroom setting, is delivered over a 12-month period, beginning with 16 weekly sessions followed by monthly maintenance. You will learn strategies for eating healthier, increasing your physical activity and making other changes that will improve your overall health and well-being.

Heartfelt Thanks I spend much of my time in the community talking about Tri-State Memorial Hospital and how to financially support the hospital through our Foundation.

Someone recently asked me what makes Tri-State different.

Sure, there are a lot of things that make us different: we are owned and operated by this community, we serve a rural population, we offer specialty care and resources that other POLLY KNELSEN Critical Access Hospitals Tri-State Hospital don’t. You can read about Vice President of Foundation other things that make us and Community Relations unique throughout the pages of this HealthBeat. But I think the real difference is found in the heart of our facility – our staff, volunteers, and providers – and in the way we love, respect, and care about our community and each other. We treat our hospital like our home, treat each other like family, and treat our patients like neighbors. It’s who we are and I am proud to be a part of this community legacy.

Over 60 years ago, the community rallied to raise the funds needed to build a hospital for this valley. Many of you and your family members, along with a number of local businesses, were among those who helped to make Tri-State Memorial Hospital a reality. Today, the strength of our Hospital is still found through the dedication and commitment of this community. Through the generous gifts from 968 donors, the Foundation raised over $485,000 in 2015. Listed in the following pages are the individuals and businesses that chose to make Tri-State a philanthropic priority in 2015. Please read these names. Making a Difference Don and Joanne Poe

Don and Joanne Poe have been longtime supporters of Tri-State Hospital Foundation, turning to the hospital and our physicians for everything from the delivery of their children to emergency room visits.

To ensure that the hospital is able to continue providing outstanding services for years to come, the Poes created a two-life charitable gift annuity for Tri-State Hospital Foundation.

“I served on the board of Tri-State Memorial Hospital, Joanne worked closely with the Foundation on Festival of Trees, and we both participated in the Commitment for Tomorrow for a number of years, so we understand how the hospital relies on donors in order to succeed,” Don says. “When we learned about the charitable gift annuity program, we felt like it was a good match for us.”

The charitable gift annuity – which is an arrangement between the foundation and the donor – allows donors such as the Poes to transfer cash or assets to the hospital now, in exchange for a guaranteed income from the Foundation for the rest of their lives. The income is based on a rate of return established in advance by the Foundation.

Record Numbers at…

The 31st annual Festival of Trees was a huge success! Our dedicated group of volunteers and community members helped turn the Nez Perce County Fair Pavilion into a holiday wonderland the week of Thanksgiving. Over 4,000 people made their way through the festivities! Our Vintage Style Show & Tea was SOLD OUT with over 560 people in attendance. Gala night was a magical evening as well; from the amazing décor and fun band to the fabulous trees and generous auction support, we raised $25,800 for the new Tru-D SmartUVC Disinfectant Robot through our "Raise the Paddle” portion of the evening (see page 18 for more information). With four, fabulous events, we netted over $108,000 to support the programs and special needs of Tri-State Memorial Hospital – the most we have ever raised in 31 years!

It takes a village of behind the scenes individuals and businesses to make this grand event a success. Seven days, trees galore, set-ups, take-downs, yards and yards of fabric, hundreds of feet of carpet, a sea of tables and chairs, coat check, Gift Shop and more, and then, storing it all away for the next Festival!

It is with sincere gratitude that we thank you all for the above and beyond work and hours you devote to make this event

Annual Foundation Awards

SPIRIT AWARD

Stonebraker McQuary Insurance This year’s Spirit Award winner has been part of the legacy of giving to TriState Hospital Foundation longer than our records show. This community owned and operated business understands and believes in the value of our community owned and operated hospital and has been overwhelmingly generous to show support throughout the years. Financially, this business has supported the Foundation through all of the special events as a sponsor, including Summerfest from years past.

Additionally, they are a Healthy Business Partner, and have offered committee members to numerous Development Council Committees. The leadership also gives as an Eagle Society member and has had family who were instrumental in opening the hospital now 61 years ago.

Because of some room scheduling issues at the hospital, this business opened their doors to our Board for meetings for over half the year. We would like to honor Stonebraker McQuary Insurance as our Spirit Award Winner and thank them for always stepping up and being a leader in giving of their time, talents, and treasures.

LEE MARTIN AWARD

In 1997, the Tri-State Hospital Foundation began a tradition to acknowledge the “above and beyond” support and dedication of one of the Trustees. The Foundation’s highest honor, the Lee Martin Award, is named for one of the founding Trustees. Lee Martin was a gentleman whose dedication and support of the Tri-State Hospital Foundation and Tri-State Memorial Hospital truly made a difference and helped mold the Foundation to what it is today. This award is voted on solely by our board members.

This year’s Lee Martin Award goes to someone who is known for being not only enthusiastic but really smart! He has a passion that helps motivate and inspire his fellow board members as well as our staff, and he is excellent at his role as our Treasurer. He has served on our board since 2010 and has been active in our special events, as well as diving in deep with strategic ideas for the Foundation’s success. Dan Rudolph is Vice President of Commercial Relationship Manager of Washington Trust Bank in Lewiston. We couldn’t agree more that Dan Rudolph is deserving of this prestigious award.

OUTSTANDING TRUSTEE AWARD

Becca Dugger

Our Outstanding Trustee Award is decided upon by our staff. This award goes to someone who has gone the extra mile throughout the year to make the Foundation successful, often behind the scenes. This board member is not only well-spoken and brilliant, but she also is willing to do any job we give her. From helping with Festival of Trees before, during, and after, to serving on some of our development council committees, to being a speaker at events, and even bringing in new volunteers for all of our projects, she is an amazing asset to us.

We scored big in 2013 when we added a board member that instantly became our “go-to-girl” on all tax and planned giving questions. She comes to meetings ready to work and with ideas to share. We also appreciate that she checks in during the week with opportunities she has found to make the Foundation stronger.

The Outstanding Trustee Award goes to Becca Dugger. Becca Dugger works at Presnell Gage and has been a board member since 2013.
