What an exciting time at Tri-State! 2015 has truly

been a whirlwind year, and we are more than half way through!

There has been a lot happening on our hospital campus and we are happy to share our accomplishments with you throughout this newsletter. The hospital board and our primary care team are pleased with the newest building on our campus – the new Medical Office Building.

Also, the newest team member at Tri-State happens to be a robot named Arthur (named for the arthroplasties it helps surgeons perform). You can read more about Arthur’s job and how he assists with partial knee and total hip replacements on page 4.

Recently, we were awarded the honor of being one of the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals in the nation by iVantage Health Analytics. This is a prestigious distinction as there are over 1,300 critical access hospitals nationwide and our strength index was measured to have performed better than our peers in managing population risk, having high quality, better outcomes and patient satisfaction, and lower costs and charges than peers. We were also awarded the honor of having the “Best Door to CT Time” at the 2015 Telestroke Summit at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center. We would like to introduce the newest member of the Tri-State

Using 3D computer imaging to help the surgeon determine the precise size, placement, and alignment for your unique knee, the surgeon performs a partial knee replacement with the robotic assistance of MAKOplasty® requiring a smaller incision and increased accuracy. The benefits can include a shortened recovery time for patients and potentially less pain post-operation. “A less invasive procedure means that you can get back on your feet and back to your life sooner, with less pain and recovery time,” says Mr. Wee.

Tri-State Memorial Hospital and Medical Campus is excited to be the only facility within the region to offer MAKOplasty® Partial Knee Resurfacing and MAKOplasty® Total Hip Replacement procedures. This exclusive new technology is already improving the care of patients choosing to have a partial knee (also known as uni-knee) or total hip replacement at TriState Hospital.

Nearly one in two people may develop symptomatic osteoarthritis of the knee in their lifetime. Symptoms of this condition include pain while walking, standing, climbing stairs or other daily activities, joint stiffness and difficult getting up from a seated position or bed, swelling around the knee, and a grating or crunching sensation when the knee joint is in movement. MAKOplasty® is a highly advanced, minimally invasive partial knee resurfacing procedure for adults with early to mid-stage osteoarthritis.

Welcome to Tri-State Family Practice!

What began months ago as a parking lot is now a beautiful brand new addition to the Tri-State Medical Office Building.

Adding almost 28,000 sq. ft. of new space to the existing Medical Office Building, this new addition’s upper level is now the new Tri-State Family Practice suite which opened their doors on June 1st.

Built with green concepts to increase efficiency through a LEAN process to decrease waste, the new Family Practice suite is a warm, comforting environment that houses most of the Primary Care Providers on campus including exam rooms, treatment rooms, Pathologists’ Regional Laboratory, Telepsychiatry consultation space, Ideal Protein office, community education room, and on-site patient services. The entire space was built with the patient’s needs in mind including a bright, open check-in space, comfortable waiting areas with varying height seating, wide opening doors, and a calm, soothing décor. The providers and staff were also carefully considered during construction and are now working in a collaborative environment that increases productivity and workspace comfort in order to deliver the best care to patients.

Skip the disasters….enjoy your summer with these safety tips!

We love our summer activities here in the LC Valley, but some of that fun may end up disastrous unless you take some smart precautions. Don’t let your summer turn sour! Follow these simple safety tips to have the fun you have been waiting all winter to enjoy.

Sun Safety Studies indicate that more than a million

any source of water. Never swim alone or in an unsupervised location and tell your children to “buddy up” for safety. Do not drink alcohol before or while swimming, boating, or water skiing. Make sure you and your children 4 and up learn how to swim, preferably by a swimming instructor. Finally, never swallow pool, lake, or river water to help stop the spread of infectious disease.

Taking a short amount of time every day to protect yourself and your loved ones from the harsh effects of the sun can pay off dramatically in the future. Covering up in long sleeves and pants and wearing hats are the best prevention, but if you want to uncover this summer to enjoy the heat, make sure you apply sunscreen and protective lip balm and reapply often.

Sunburn isn’t the only concern with the sun. Heat exposure causes more deaths in the US than hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes combined. Those at the greatest risk are children, elderly, and people with certain medical conditions such as heart disease. Many times, the signs of heat stress on the body are ignored as symptoms build over time, beginning with blurred vision and confusion followed by dizziness, fainting or collapsing. Seek immediate medical attention if these symptoms occur with excessive heat exposure. In order to prevent heat exposure, seek cool shaded areas and drink plenty of water.

Water Safety

We are lucky to have an abundance of bodies of water nearby to swim, fish, or boat in our area.

Unfortunately, thousands of Americans drown each year and thousands more are injured or killed in boating accidents. For children 14 and under, drowning is the second leading cause of injury-related death. Making sure you use some commonsense precautions will help to keep you and your children safe this summer. Always closely supervise young children around

Food Safety

We all want to break out the picnic baskets and coolers to enjoy a summer BBQ, but we don’t want to spend the rest of the day with a food-related illness putting a damper on the fun. The CDC estimates that 76 million Americans have some type of food-related illness every year, with 300,000 being hospitalized and 5,000 dying. You can protect everyone at your BBQ or picnic by following a few simple rules. Cook meats, poultry, and seafood thoroughly.

Using a meat thermometer helps to make sure your grilled foods are done right. Wash hands, utensils, and cutting boards often, specifically after coming in contact with raw meat or poultry. Bacteria thrive at room temperature, so make sure you refrigerate or put foods into the cooler promptly. Thoroughly wash produce and discard outer leaves of lettuce and cabbage before using.

• 1955-2015 • As it was intended 60 years ago, it remains today….YOUR hospital. This original excerpt from the February 24, 1956 edition of the Clarkston Herald could just as easily be in the newspaper today.

The premise of building and operating a hospital with the community’s best interest and without outside influence or the reliance upon tax levies still holds true today. Mrs. Lena Provost, the first president of the board would be proud that we have continued that tradition the tradition of Tri-State Memorial as YOUR hospital.

It all began in late 1952 when Mrs. Lena Provost and the Organization of War Mothers polled the community and determined that the community wanted a hospital to serve as a memorial to all those who fought and died in the wars. A committee was organized to conduct a preliminary campaign to obtain memorial gifts throughout the community to fund

a new 50-bed hospital. This original committee was headed

by George L. Nelson and included members such as Claire Ausman, Howard Engle, George Fitzsimmons, Matt Johnson, and Lester Parsons. The Advance Gifts Campaign was first launched to solicit memorial gifts from those in a position to pledge larger amounts. Once that was accomplished, a team of 130 workers proceeded with general requests for gifts of any size in the area. This fund drive was incredibly successful due to the cooperation and participation of the community with the same desire to build a community hospital.

By May of 1953, the drive had gone over its goal by $35,000 and the community had raised a total of $490,616. This large fund was combined with a federal grant of $295,600 to make a total of $786,216 dedicated to building a new hospital – a living memorial to those who gave their lives to this country.

Over the last 60 years, many of the faces that work at TriState Memorial Hospital & Medical Campus every day have changed. Expansions have been constructed, new equipment has been purchased, and new services and providers have joined the team. There have been changes in administration and management, newly elected hospital board members, and policies and procedures adopted over time. One important thing has remained constant over the years and will continue for many years to come – this is YOUR community hospital and YOUR health is our first priority. That distinction is a resounding point in our mission, vision, and values and is continued on page 14

Some of the hospital’s more notable changes and advancements are shown in the timeline in the middle of this newsletter. It’s amazing to see where we have come from and wonderful to remember who got us here; it was the generous, communityPOLLY KNELSEN minded citizens of the LC Valley Tri-State Hospital that built Tri-State! Over sixty Vice President of Foundation years ago, local War Fathers and Community Relations and War Mothers organized a campaign and, over the course of one year, raised a total of $490,616, which was added to by a federal grant of $295,600. In this way, the community worked together to provide residents with a non-profit, communityowned hospital that was committed to delivering exceptional care for many years to come.

Today, philanthropy continues to play an important role at TriState. Every gift and every act of kindness makes a difference in the lives of the families and communities we serve. And, there are so many ways to give! Through your donations, many of you have already chosen to become investors in your communityowned hospital this year, making a difference for each person who walks in our doors seeking the healthcare services they need. 2015 Lee Martin Award 2014 Above & Beyond Award Todd Clovis, owner of Hells Canyon Electric, was raised in the LC Valley and serves on numerous boards and community efforts. We are proud to have him on the Foundation Board; serving since 2010.

Why did you choose to get involved with the Hospital Foundation?

I chose to become involved with the Foundation because I think it is an investment in our community and the people who live in it. Our community-owned hospital provides valuable services to our community, and at some point, in most everyone’s lives they will need a hospital. We want TSMH to have the most state-of-the art equipment and best technology possible. The foundation brings people of all different backgrounds together to work towards these goals. We can make a difference and every person counts.

What has been the most rewarding part/experience you’ve had in your time at the Foundation?

Some of the most rewarding experiences I have had with the foundation over the last few years are the events that I help with. The ChipShot golf tournament in the summer and the Festival of Trees in the fall require a lot of creative thinking, organization and hard work by many volunteers. Seeing these events attended and enjoyed by many people and raising thousands of dollars for our community-owned hospital is rewarding and personally motivating for me. My wife and several other family members are employed by TSMH, and being able to support them and the hospital is great. My daughter also models for the tea and really enjoys being a part of the TSMH family.

What makes you most proud about being a part of the Foundation Board?

I am proud to carry on my parents’ tradition of public service. My father was the mayor of Clarkston and my mother was on the city council, so they spent many hours volunteering when I was growing up. I am grateful to be able to be a part of such a talented and respected board. We have a very diverse group that really works hard to get things done. It’s just an honor to get to do this.

Working Toward a

Better Future

Tri-State Hospital Foundation Development Council The Tri-State Hospital Foundation Development Council was created in 2007, when hospital leaders recognized that an uncertain future in hospital funding required greater participation of the local community. The Council is a network of valley residents and business leaders who represent the partnership between the community and the hospital. Their efforts help to ensure that Tri-State Memorial Hospital continues to be able to provide high-tech care with the tender touch for which we are known.

The Development Council actively raises funds to benefit TriState Memorial Hospital and provides educational programs for local professionals and community members and opportunities

for input between citizens, businesses, and hospital leadership.

There are five committees of influential community volunteers along with a hospital committee representing the employees of Tri-State Memorial Hospital.
