SLIGO YACHT CLUB WELL REPRESENTED IN BARBADOS

T

he 105–boat fleet was barely back on the beach in Barbados when the news broke in Wicklow that MacCarthy and sailmaker Davis had done enough for one of the most coveted UK and World dinghy titles. The Wicklow crew outwitted a number of multi–world champions to seize the trophy, Ireland’s first GP14 World Title win since 1991.

Boyle told Afloat.ie: ‘This is a fantastic result for Irish dinghy sailing and the GP14 Class in particular.

The GP14 World Championship epitomises what small boat racing is about; large scale participation, racing for all ages and levels, and razor sharp competition at the

top end. We are absolutely delighted that Shane and Andy have brought the world title back to Ireland’.

While the other contenders for the title won individual races MacCarthy, the current UK and Irish Champion, sailed a very consistent series and was never outside the top three for the duration of the event. Moving into the latter part of championship with four races to go over Sunday & Monday, MacCarthy & Davis were tied in second place with British pair Ian Dobson & Andy Tunnicliffe on 15 points, both two points adrift of the leaders Craig and Lewis of Great Britain on 13 points.

MacCarthy and Davis are the fourth Irish names on to the Worlds trophy and the first from the Republic. The Fekkes Brothers from Larne in County Antrim last won it in 1991 and Bill Whisker and Jimmy McKee from Ballyholme in County Down were winners in 1975. Andy Thompson, also from Larne, won crewing with Richard Estaugh at the helm in Durban 2000.

The massive championship was hotly contested with the Irish pair prevailing over a star studded field which included reigning five time GP14 World Champions Dobson & Tunnicliffe, former World Champion Neil Marsden, former UK National Champion Mike Senior and multi class World and European Champion Nick Craig sailing with Toby Lewis and widely recognised as Britain’s most successful amateur sailor.

22 crews from Ireland, two from Sligo travelled to compete in the event which attracted competitors from Sri Lanka, North America, Australia, Barbados and United Kingdom.

Sunday proved decisive with MacCarthy & Davis making their bid for the title scoring a 1st and 2nd for the day to catapult them into the lead four points ahead of Dobson & Tunnicliffe with Craig & Lewis slipping back to third. It was still all to play for heading into Monday with two races to sail and 4 points separating the three crews who could win the prestigious world title but MacCarthy & Davis wrapped it up in Race 9 finishing second to Craig & Lewis with Dobson & Tunnicliffe forced back into 3rd. This is a first Irish win in this prestigious event since the Fekkes brothers in 1991.

John & Donal McGuinness (Moville SC) in 12th were next best Irish, followed by Lough Erne’s JP & Carolyn McCaldin in 14th with Sligo YC Keith Louden & Alan Thompson in 20th. Brenda Preston with crew Steven Preston took home the hotly contested Lady Helm prize by only 1 point.

The GP14 is one of Ireland’s most popular two person racing dinghy classes and regularly attracts fleets of 40-50+ boats.

EASTER MONDAY 18 HOLE STABLEFORD AT STRANDHILL GOLF CLUB

E

aster Monday saw the staging of the final competition in what was an excellent Easter Open Week at Strandhill Golf Club and the standard of scoring remained high.

Kyle Kane from Co. Sligo Golf Club took top spot with an excellent score of 42 points. Kyle put together around consisting of no less than eight pars distributed

equally between the front and back nine with four on each nine including threein-a-row from the thirteenth to the fifteenth holes respectfully on his way to signing for his winning score of 42 points.

Second place was taken

by Men’s Captain, Pat McManus, one point behind the winner with a score of 41 points. Pat

scored a total of eight pars over his eighteen holes with four on the front nine and the remaining four on the back nine as well as adding birdies on the par three second and par three ninth holes to ensure he signed for a score of 41 points to take second place. Third place was taken by Ciaran Henry with a score of 38 points. Ciaran

Sligo TY Tennis Blitz – Friday April 29th 2-3.30pm Sligo Tennis Club with support from Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership would like to invite your transition year students to a ‘Tennis 4 health & wellbeing’ blitz. The blitz is an event aimed at giving an introduction to a lifelong sport, and will

include cardio tennis, Futnet (tennis and soccer combined), fast 4s, tennis team events, and factsheets on exercise, nutrition & mental health.

Following on from the regional blitz series one school will be picked to represent Sligo at the first

ever Transition Years Connacht Team Tennis Competition in late May in Castlebar.

There is no limit to the number of students you can bring to the blitzes, however we can accommodate a maximum number at each

Our minors started their season off in stunning style, winning by a point away to Tourlestrane. 9 points down with 7 minutes remaining, the lads rallied to score 3-1 and claw back the deficit. A brace from captain Malachy Healy, a goal from Keith Golden and a well taken free from Niall Colsh saw Ballymote claim the points after an enthralling game in which both sides left everything on the field.

Sligo AC well represented at the GloHealth Masters Indoor Championships in Athlone

T

he inaugural Pro Zarautz launched in three-tofour foot surf with light onshore wind, providing a great play field for some of Europe’s best surfers to perform.

France’s Marc Lacomare, 25, put on an absolute clinic, attacking the clean afternoon peaks with amazing power and flow on his backhand. The Frenchman belted two massive scores on his final two efforts and clinched a near-perfect 18.97 heat total, the highest of the event so far.

“Waves were fun, you just had to find the right two,” Lacomare said.

“It’s always great to have events in your own region, even though we’re not exactly home, it’s still very close and I like being able to go home at the end of the day, sleep well and come back the next morning. I haven’t had the best of starts in Australia this season, but I feel great so I’m hoping things will

turn around.”

Sligo man Gearoid McDaid finished a very respectable top 13 in his first qs zarautz pro event of the season.

He competed against the more seasoned competitor’s and got through a couple of heats but was eventually knocked out of the competition.

Not bad for a lone Irish man traveling around on his own.

Coming off an excellent ninth place at the Australian Open of Surfing, perennial QS threatJonathan Gonzalez (CNY), 35, confirmed his great form in Zarautz. The Canary Island surfer nailed two clean carves on a righthander for an 8.90 early on, and despite having a hard time finding another good ride, managed to steal the lead and eventually take first place.

“I’ve come here a few days early and have been training a lot,”

Gonzalez commented. “Conditions look good for the weekend, so hopefully that sandbank stays put and we can continue to surf that right. There are a lot of great surfers here so it’s going to be a tough event but I’m having fun and I look forward to surfing more heats out there.”

Vicente Romero (ESP), 23, rounded up the day’s action in the late afternoon setting sun, with a solid display of performance surfing to launch his campaign in the Basque Country.

“Wave selection was really tricky but luckily I was patient and waited with first priority until I found a really good one,” Romero explained. “I got that 7.50 in the end and made it through so I’m super happy. I’ve competed here in Zarautz for a long time and I feel completely comfortable so I hope I can continue to win heats and have fun.”

In the GloHealth Masters Indoor Championships in Athlone,there were good performances from the Sligo AC contingent. Congrats and well done to John Mac Dermot who ran 8.85 to clinch gold in the M70 60 metres. The M45 800M saw a thrilling sprint finish in which Kevin McGlone was just edged into the bronze medal position by Finn Valley’s Kieran Carlin. In the M35 1500M Shane Hayes finished in 4th position in 4:27, just a second behind the bronze medallist Stephen Hunter of St Michael’s AC. In the M65 High Jump, Henry Rowan earned silver with a jump of 1:20. In the 3K Walk, Brenda Gannon won gold in a time of 15:02.

In the Craughwell 10 Miler, Damien Kennedy finished a fine 9th position in a time of 59:51. His wife Aishling also ran a fine race to record a time of 1:18:17.

St. Molaise Gaels GAA Club The next Club Lotto Draw will take place on Monday April 18th at 8.30pm. Thank you to everyone for their continued support for this important fundraiser.

Our U14 Girls were beaten by an excellent Tourlestrane side in the Feile final at Sligo IT on Saturday morning. Gaels defeated Shamrock Gaels earlier in the day in the semi final. Well done to all the Players and Management Team on some excellent displays in this competition.

Underage coaching for Boys and Girls continues on Saturday mornings. Girls at 10.00am and Boys at 11.15am.

orthwest mtb are delighted to be hosting the First round of the Chain reaction cycles, Irish National Points Series in Union Wood, Sligo on the 17th of April. Union wood has been the home of mountain biking in the northwest for over 25 years and has always been known as a tough but fun forest. This year the NPS course is top class. A Great mix of Techy Single track, Fast descents and tough fire road climbs.

R

owing is a sport with origin’s back to ancient Egyptian times. A sport based on propelling a boat forward on water using oars. It’s a sport that focuses on learning the technique of rowing, where athletes race against each other in the boats. There are a number of different boat classes in which athletes can compete, ranging from an individual boat (a single scull)

to an eight person boat with a coxswain – a coxed eight.

Modern rowing as a competitive sport can be traced to the early 18th century, when races were held between professional watermen on the River Thames in London. It is also one of the oldest Olympic sports; it’s been on the Olympic Programme since 1896 and is highly regarded as one of the toughest physical sports on offer. It’s also quite tactical and

somewhat of an art. Good to excellent competitive rowing requires precision timing, discipline, skill, technique and the shrewdest of minds – and if working as part of a pair or team of four or eight then it requires all of that as one single unit for the complete duration of the race distance. It is a sport that is steeped in heritage and culture – the annual boat race in the UK is as much as part of the world’s sporting heritage as

the Golf majors, Final Day at Wimbledon, The Grand National and the FA Cup Final.

For most people if they were to be asked to name or remember a rower or a vision of Rowing, Sir Steve Redgrave would pop into the minds of most. One of the greatest Olympians of all time.

2016 marks the 10th anniversary of Sligo Rowing club and if you have ever been lucky enough to be down by

Doorly Park early on a weekend morning you will see many an aspiring and experienced rower perfecting their art form on the waters of the River Garavogue and Lough Gill. On a clear dry morning with the sun rising, the sight of rowers on the water with the scenic backdrop that our county provides us with – is a sight to behold.

An initiative in 2006 by Sligo Sport and Recreation

Partnership with Rowing Ireland saw a steering group formed that went on to create Sligo Rowing Club. One of those involved in that group and a current member, Treasurer and Coach at Sligo Rowing Club is Rory Clarke, an Athlone native now residing in Sligo, he is a man who was brought up on rowing and his enthusiasm and passion for the art of competitive rowing is to say the least infectious, and no doubt

those who have an interest in rowing boats in Sligo will well know!

Over its initial decade in existence Sligo Rowing club has secured storage facilities at Doorly Park for its boats and equipment, held major Regatta’s and introduced many a new comer to its sport, regularly holding “come and try days” where newcomers get a chance to get into a boat and sit on water and be involved in

movement on the water and if you like that then your brought on through the techniques and training in a progressive fashion and integrated into a group.

For the coaches involved it takes a careful eye on how that progressive approach applies to each individual and how quickly they integrate with experienced and skilful rowers.

It’s an approach that has worked well for Sligo Rowing club who have the reputation now of being a “nursery” for the University’s. Glen Patterson and Hugh James came through the coaching setup at Sligo Rowing

Club to claim national honours with NUI Galway; another talented rower that was lost to athletics was Zac Irwin who could apparently provide speed to a boat on water in a similar way that he applies speed to his feet on the tarmac!

At the moment a close eye is being cast over two lady rowers, Cora Hackett and Tara Dunbar, both have attended Irish Trials recently and the view within the club is it’s a matter of time, not an “if” but “when” Sligo Rowing Club is a competitive club, attending

regattas on a weekly basis over what is a very long season – starting in September running all the way through to the Bank Holiday weekend in August. The National Championships are held in July at the national rowing centre in Cork. Race distances can vary from 1km to 6km either head to head or in Time Trial mode. Sligo Rowing club, train every Saturday and Sunday mornings with boats on the water from 8.30am. Much attention is paid to technique and carefully building the stroke and crew into full flight, starting with small strokes, half

strokes, three quarter stroke and full stroke, body posture, leg movement, oar management and the skill of hitting the water correctly and in time is crucial to the art of rowing and success on the water. Added to that there is at least two gym sessions per week also.

Looking back over the past 10 years Rory Clarke is more than pleased with the progression of the club and even more so he looks forward to the next 10 years and hopes to secure even more facilities in terms of changing rooms,

showers and toilets, securing more Regattas in Sligo, on a stretch of water beside Doorly Park, that is practically manmade for spectators and the atmosphere of a sporting contest.

Sligo Rowing club is in good shape and at only 10 years of age and with the experience of the likes of Rory Clarke along with former national Irish cox Tommie Closh and ex-queens champion rower Malau Donoghue this old art form the sport of rowing is in good hands in this relatively young aspiring Sligo club.

Ox Mountains Cycling Club first Sportive event of the summer is on Sunday June 12th. The 4 Passes departure will be from club HQ at the site of the Ox Mountains Centre at Joe Dan’s, Drumartin, Aclare, Co. Sligo.

There are two route options Route 1: 55km Route 2: 120km Everyone taking part will complete route 1 which leads back to the centre and to the main food stop on the day while those wishing to complete route 2 will continue for the remaining 65km and brave the climbs it entails.

Foleys Bar FC The ‘Margaret Callaghan Memorial Cup’ Final took place on Thursday 24th March at the IT Sligo Knocknarea Arena Astro Turf between Foleys Bar FC and The Village Inn FC with an 8pm kickoff.

Foleys Bar started the stronger of the two with the leagues top

marksman Martin Bystrainsky and Gary Rooney going close for the leagues runners up early in the game.Corrigan sent his men out with the intention of doing damage early in the game and denting the spirit of the Village Inn men before they got a foothold in the game.

The break through came after 11 mins with some good work done the left wing by Rooney who crossed into a packed 6 yard box and seen the ball fall at the feet of Ross Melly who tapped in from close range past the helpless “Chips” in the Village sticks.

The Village Inn seems to be sparked into life after falling behind with Walsh and McDonagh finding “Kipper” free on the edge of the Foleys penalty area with a pin point ball but he could not find the finish firing straight into the keeper’s hands.

The rest of the first half was too close to call with both defences on top with chances hard to come by.With only 5 minutes remaining in the 1st half Alan Henry sent a cross into the Village box which caused

havoc in the defence and Dermot Horan was adjudged to have handled the ball in the melee ‘penalty kick” Foleys.

Up stepped the left foot wizard Gary Fallon who struck home with a postage stamp spot kick 2-0 Foleys HT. The second half kicked off with both team’s making some changes bringing on some fresh legs for what promised to be a tight 28mins.McDonagh came close after latching onto a short back pass but failed to finish at the near post.

Rooney was now playing as the lone striker up front and seemed to be enjoying the challenge giving Folan and Co a hard time while pulling out some breath taking touches under pressure to give his defence a breather.

The game was stopped midway through the half when Sommers and Walsh collided in mid air with a nasty clash of heads which meant both men needed attention.This seemed to knock the stuffing out of the Village men as they struggled to find a way past Hardagon and his back 4.”Chips was busy pulling off some fine saves 1st from Fallon and then at close range from Brady.

The final nail in the coffin came and with a mountain to climb already the Village Inn found themselves down to 10 men after Leon Gordon was given his marching orders after a coming together with Funston on the sidelines leaving Foleys to see out the game and claim this year’s “Margaret Callaghan Memorial Cup” #Champions.

he Castledargan golf club had its captains drive in on this paddys day. There was a big croud of members and friends in attendance and we were blessed with the good weather as the sun shone as the the two new captains Niall and Shiela hit there tee shots straight down the middle (ish) of the fairway. Afterwards the croud gathered up in the bar where Niall and Shiela thanked the club for the opportunity to repersent castledargan for the year ahead. Everyone enjoyed a night of Music and craic and a good night was had by all.

CLUB FUNDRAISER The club had its first fundraiser of the year on Good Friday and Easter Saturday last.

It was a great turnout and the club would like to thank all the members from our neighbouring clubs who came out to support our event. Winners of the event was our own club members team Ray o Grady, Kevin and Carmel Conlon.

Cyclists will witness spectacular views on route of the Atlantic Ocean and Coney Island while the iconic mountain range of Ben Bulben will be visible over their right shoulder while the imposing sight of Knocknarea and the Queen Maeve Tomb will be on their left as they peddle along.

The cyclists will be afforded a water stop at Ransboro (18km) before they continue onwards towards Ballisodare bay. On taking the first exit at the Ballisodare village roundabout

the cyclists will pass Union Wood and the scenic Ballygawley Lough along the R284 before turning left at Ballygawley village.

Following the R287 the cyclists will arrive in the village of Ballintogher where a warm welcome and food stop will await them at St. Michaels GAA Clubhouse (33km).

Following the foodstop a small change to the route for 2016 will take the cyclists in the direction of Killanummery along quiet roads in County Leitrim before arriving in the village of Dromahaire. Cyclists will be treated to some further spectacular scenery as they head back towards Sligo along the R288 including the scenic Lough Gill and Parkes Castle.

After some strenuous peddling and climbing the cyclists will be rewarded with views of Lough Colgagh and the distant Calry mountain range. On arriving back to Sligo town the cyclists will pass by Hazelwood eventually crossing the N16 to arrive back at the Institute of Technology.

Passing through Coolaney the route will veer left at the top of the village towards Lissalough and will follow quiet county roads until they reach the Cloonacool/ Coolaney road at which point the cyclists take a right turn doing a loop which brings them back into Coolaney village.

On arrival back in Coolaney (52 km) the cyclists will receive a warm welcome from Coolaney Development Company who will host a welcome first food stop. Cyclists will head onwards in the direction of Sligo passing along the outskirts of Collooney before rejoining the 60km Lough Gill Circuit at Ballysodare.

The cyclists will pass Union Wood and the scenic Ballygawley Lough along the R284 before turning left at Ballygawley village. Following the R287 the cyclists will arrive in the village of Ballintogher where a second food and water stop awaits at St. Michaels GAA Clubhouse 75km. Following the foodstop a

small change to the route for 2016 will take the cyclists in the direction of Killanummery along quiet roads in County Leitrim before arriving in the village of Dromahaire. On leaving the village cyclists take a right turn onto a new route section back to Sligo that was introduced for 2013, adding an additional challenge to the cycle involving a significant climb 130 metres.

However, cyclists will be rewarded with some further spectacular scenery as they head back towards Sligo along by the scenic Doon Lough and the Leean and Keelogyboy mountain ranges.

For the last approximately 14km cyclists can breathe a sigh of relief as the climbing is over and involves some nice downhill sections which will afford participants a chance to enjoying and reflect on a great sense of achievement. Cyclists will eventually cross the N16 to arrive back at the Institute of Technology in the knowledge that they have completed a great days cycling. A warm welcome home, refreshments and a massage for those most in need awaits !

including the picturesque Lough Easkey. Eventually spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean will come into view as the cyclists descend in the direction of Dromore West and on reaching the N59 cross the road with caution and will make a short detour off the route to pick up the first foodstop at Dromore West community centre 76km.

The onward journey will take the cyclists along the coast road with the sound of the crashing waves and the sea views on the left including Aughris Head and Dunmoran Strand. On arriving back at the N59 cyclists go left and travel for a short distance along the N59 before taking a right turn to head back into the Ox Mountains for a challenging climb up Ladies Brae which rises to a height of 240 metres.

Cyclists will descend off Ladies Brae eventually arriving at a T junction and on taking the left turn will arrive at the village of Coolaney for a second foodstop 109km.

Cyclists will head onwards in the direction of Sligo passing along the outskirts of Collooney before rejoining the 60km Lough Gill Circuit at Ballysodare. The cyclists will pass Union Wood and the

scenic Ballygawley Lough along the R284 before turning left at Ballygawley village.

IT SLIGO SURFERS CATCH WINNING WAVE T he prowess and skill of IT Sligo's students on the waves was rewarded in Strandhill, Co Sligo when the Institute's surfing team won the 2016 National Intervarsities Surfing Championships.

IT Sligo beat off stiff competition to secure the overall team title for the second time in the Institute’s history.

The event which was streamed live online, was organised by the National Surfing Association (NSA) in conjunction with IT Sligo, and saw 148 competitors from 18 third level institutions take to the water.

"Conditions were very challenging for the surfers," said Jack-Tim Murphy-Malone, one of the event organisers and President of the IT Surfing Club (pictured above) "Our surf club had been working towards this event since the start of the academic year," said the Recreation & Leisure student, who also runs his own surf school in Curraroe, Co Wexford. "The standard was very high, particularly in the men's open event - but the atmosphere in the water amongst the competitors was very friendly and showing the event live online helped capture the imagination of the wider surfing community."

St Michael’s had a good win over last years Intermediate champions Eastern Harps in the second round of the Sligo Ladies Connacht Gold Division 1 league. Playing against the wind the girls started very strongly and really controlled the game from the start.

It was a great team display with 8 players contributing to the 3-12 total. It was great to see Caroline Benson back playing with St Michaels and we wish Jessica Mackey a speedy recovery from her ankle injury.

Training continues Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7pm. U-12’s had there first outing against Bunninadden on Tuesday last, condition’s were poor but both teams played some great football, Bunninadden finished the strongest to take the win. St Michaels has some great performances and will improve as the season progresses, next match away to Ballymote on April 12th @ 7pm. veryone knows that regular exercise is good for the body. But exercise is also one of the most effective ways to improve your mental health.

Regular exercise can have a profoundly positive impact on depression, anxiety, ADHD, and more. It also relieves stress, improves memory, helps you sleep better, and boosts overall mood. And you don’t have to be a fitness fanatic to reap the benefits. Research indicates that modest amounts of exercise can make a difference. No matter your age or fitness level, you can learn to use exercise as a powerful tool to feel better.

What are the mental health benefits of exercise?

Exercise is not just about aerobic capacity and muscle size. Sure, exercise can improve your physical health and your physique, trim your waistline, improve your sex life, and even add years to your life. But that’s not what motivates most people to stay active.

People who exercise regularly tend to

do so because it gives them an enormous sense of well-being.

They feel more energetic throughout the day, sleep better at night, have sharper memories, and feel more relaxed and positive about themselves and their lives. And it’s also powerful medicine for many common mental health challenges.

Exercise and depression Studies show that exercise can treat mild to moderate depression as effectively as antidepressant medication—but without the side-effects, of course. In addition to relieving depression symptoms, research also shows that maintaining an exercise schedule can prevent you from relapsing.

Exercise is a powerful depression fighter for several reasons. Most importantly, it promotes all kinds of changes in the brain, including neural growth, reduced inflammation, and new activity patterns that promote feelings of calm and well-being.

It also releases endorphins, powerful

chemicals in your brain that energize your spirits and make you feel good. Finally, exercise can also serve as a distraction, allowing you to find some quiet time to break out of the cycle of negative thoughts that feed depression.

Exercise and anxiety Exercise is a natural and effective anti-anxiety treatment.

It relieves tension and stress, boosts physical and mental energy, and enhances wellbeing through the release of endorphins. Anything that gets you moving can help, but you’ll get a bigger benefit if you pay attention instead of zoning out.

Try to notice the sensation of your feet hitting the ground, for example, or the rhythm of your breathing, or the feeling of the wind on your skin. By adding this mindfulness element—really focusing on your body and how it feels as you exercise—you’ll not only improve your physical condition faster, but you may also be able to interrupt the flow of constant worries running through your head.

Exercise and stress Ever noticed how your body feels when you’re under stress?

Your muscles may be tense, especially in your face, neck, and shoulders, leaving you with back or neck pain, or painful headaches. You may feel a tightness in your chest, a pounding pulse, or muscle cramps. You may also experience problems such as insomnia, heartburn, stomachache, diarrhea, or frequent urination. The worry and discomfort of all these physical symptoms can in turn lead to even more stress, creating a vicious cycle between your mind and body.

Exercising is an effective way to break this cycle. As well as releasing endorphins in the brain, physical activity helps to relax the muscles and relieve tension in the body. Since the body and mind are so closely linked, when your body feels better so, too, will your mind.

Exercise and ADHD Exercising regularly is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce the symptoms of ADHD and improve concentration, motivation, memory, and mood. Physical activity immediately boosts the brain’s dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin levels—all of which affect focus

and attention. In this way, exercise works in much the same way as ADHD medications such as Ritalin and Adderall.

Exercise and PTSD and trauma Evidence suggests that by really focusing on your body and how it feels as you exercise, you can actually help your nervous system become “unstuck” and begin to move out of the immobilization stress response that characterizes PTSD or trauma. Instead of thinking about other things, pay close attention to the physical sensations in your joints and muscles, even your insides as your body moves. Exercises that involve cross movement and that engage both arms and legs—such as walking (especially in sand), running, swimming, weight training, or dancing—are some of your best choices.

Outdoor activities like hiking, sailing, mountain biking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, and skiing (downhill and crosscountry) have also been shown to reduce the symptoms of PTSD. Other mental and emotional benefits of exercise Sharper memory and thinking.

The same endorphins that make you feel better also help you concentrate and feel mentally sharp for tasks at hand. Exercise also stimulates the growth of new brain cells and helps prevent age-related decline.

Higher self-esteem. Regular activity is an investment in your mind, body, and soul. When it becomes habit, it can foster your sense of self-worth and make you feel strong and powerful. You’ll feel better about your appearance and, by meeting even small exercise goals, you’ll feel a sense of achievement.

Better sleep. Even short bursts of exercise in the morning or afternoon can help regulate your sleep patterns. If you prefer to exercise at night, relaxing exercises such as yoga or gentle stretching can help promote sleep.

More energy. Increasing your heart rate several times a week will give you more get-up-andgo. Start off with just a few minutes of exercise a day, and increase your workout as you feel more energized.

Stronger resilience. When faced with mental or emotional challenges in life, exercise can help you cope in a healthy way, instead of resorting to alcohol,

drugs, or other negative behaviors that ultimately only make your symptoms worse.

Regular exercise can also help boost your immune system and reduce the impact of stress.

Reaping the mental health benefits of exercise is easier than you think Wondering just how active you need to be to get a mental health boost? It’s probably not as much as you think. You don’t need to devote hours out your busy day, train at the gym, sweat buckets, or run mile after monotonous mile. You can reap all the physical and mental health benefits of exercise with 30-minutes of moderate exercise five times a week. Two 15-minute or even three 10-minute exercise sessions can also work just as well.

Even a little bit of activity is better than nothing If that still seems intimidating, don’t despair. Even just a few minutes of physical activity are better than none at all. If you don’t have time for 15 or 30 minutes of exercise, or if your body tells you to take a break after 5 or 10 minutes, for example, that’s okay, too. Start with 5- or 10-minute sessions and slowly increase your time. The more you exercise, the more energy you’ll have, so eventually you’ll feel ready for a little more.

The key is to commit to do some moderate physical activity— however little—on most days. As exercising becomes habit, you can slowly add extra minutes or try different types of activities. If you keep at it, the benefits of exercise will begin to pay off.

You don't have to suffer to get results Research shows that moderate levels of exercise are best for most people. Moderate means: That you breathe a little heavier than normal, but are not out of breath. For example, you should be able to chat with your walking partner, but not easily sing a song.

That your body feels warmer as you move, but not overheated or very sweaty.

Overcoming mental health obstacles to exercise So now you know that exercise will help you feel much better and that it doesn’t take as much effort as you might have thought. But taking that first step is still easier said than done.

Exercise obstacles are very real—particularly when you’re also

struggling with mental health.

Here are some common barriers and what you can do to get past them.

Feeling exhausted When you’re tired or stressed, it feels like working out will just make it worse. But the truth is that physical activity is a powerful energizer. Studies show that regular exercise can dramatically reduce fatigue and increase your energy levels. If you are really feeling tired, promise yourself a 5-minute walk.

Chances are you’ll be able to go five more minutes.

Feeling overwhelmed. When you’re stressed or depressed, the thought of adding another obligation can seem overwhelming. Working out just doesn’t seem doable. If you have children, managing childcare while you exercise can be a big hurdle. Just remember that physical activity helps us do everything else better. If you begin thinking of physical activity as a priority, you will soon find ways to fit small amounts in a busy schedule.

Feeling hopeless. Even if you’re starting at “ground zero,” you can still workout. Exercise helps you get in shape. If you have no experience exercising, start slow with low-impact movement a few minutes each day.

Feeling pain. If you have a disability, severe weight problem, arthritis, or any injury or illness that limits your mobility, talk to your healthcare provider about ways to safely exercise. You shouldn’t ignore pain, but rather do what you can, when you

can. Divide your exercise into shorter, more frequent chunks of time if that helps, or try exercising in water to reduce joint or muscle discomfort.

Feeling bad about yourself. Are you your own worst critic? It’s time to try a new way of thinking about your body. No matter what your weight, age or fitness level, there are others like you with the goals of getting fit. Try surrounding yourself with people in your shoes. Take a class with people at a variety of fitness levels. Accomplishing even the smallest fitness goals will help you gain body confidence.

Getting started exercising when you’re anxious or depressed Many of us find it hard enough to motivate ourselves to exercise at the best of times. When we feel depressed, anxious, stressed or have other mental or emotional problems, it can be doubly difficult. This is especially true of depression and anxiety, and it can leave you feeling trapped in a catch-22 situation. You know exercise will make you feel better, but depression has robbed you of the energy and motivation you need to exercise, or your social anxiety means you can’t bear the thought of being seen at an exercise class or running through the park. So what can you do?

It's okay to start small. In fact, it's smart.

When you’re under the cloud of an emotional disorder and haven’t exercised for a long time, setting yourself extravagant goals like completing a marathon or working out for an hour every morning will only leave you more despondent if you fall short. Better to set yourself achievable goals and build up from there.

Schedule your workout at the time of day when your energy is highest That may be first thing in the morning

before work or school, or at lunchtime before the midafternoon lull hits. If depression or anxiety has you feeling tired and unmotivated all day long, try dancing to some music or simply going for a walk. Even a short, 15-minute walk can help clear your mind, improve your mood, and boost your energy level. As you move and start to feel a little better, you’ll experience a greater sense of control over your well-being. You may even feel energized enough to exercise more vigorously—by walking further, breaking into a run, or adding a bike ride, for example.

Other tips for staying motivated when you’re also struggling with mental health Focus on activities you enjoy.

Any activity that gets you moving counts. That could include throwing a Frisbee with a dog or friend, walking laps of a mall window shopping, or cycling to the grocery store. If you’ve never exercised before or don’t know what you might enjoy, try a few different things.

Activities such as gardening or tackling a home

improvement project can be great ways to start moving more when you have a mood disorder—as well as helping you become more active, they can also leave you with a sense of purpose and accomplishment.

Be comfortable. Whatever time of day you decide to exercise, wear clothing that’s comfortable and choose a setting that you find calming or energizing. That may be a quiet corner of your home, a scenic path, or your favorite city park.

Reward yourself. Part of the reward of completing an activity is how much better you’ll feel afterwards, but it always helps your motivation to promise yourself an extra treat for exercising. Reward yourself with a hot bubble bath after a workout, a delicious smoothie, or with an extra episode of your favorite TV show.

Make exercise a social activity.

Exercising with a friend or loved one, or even your kids will not only make exercising more fun and enjoyable, it can also help to motivate you to stick to a workout routine. You’ll also feel better than exercising alone. In fact, when you’re suffering from a mood disorder such as depression, the companionship can be just as important as the exercise.

Easy ways to move more that don't involve the gym

Don’t have 30 minutes to dedicate to yoga or a bike ride?

Don’t worry. Think about physical activity as a lifestyle rather than just a single task to check off.

Look at your daily routine and consider ways to sneak in activity here, there, and everywhere.

Need ideas? We’ve got them.

In and around your home. Clean the house, wash the car, tend to the yard and garden, mow the lawn with a push mower, sweep the sidewalk or patio with a broom.

At work and on the go. Bike or walk to an appointment rather than drive, banish all elevators and get to know every staircase possible, briskly walk to the bus stop then get off one stop early, park at the back of the lot and walk into the store or office, take a vigorous walk during your coffee break.

With the family. Jog around the soccer field during your kid’s practice, make a neighborhood bike ride part of weekend routine, play tag with your children in the yard, go canoeing at a lake, walk the dog in a new place.

Just for fun. Pick fruit at an orchard, boogie to music, go to the beach or take a hike, gently stretch while watching television, organize an office bowling team, take a class in martial arts, dance, or yoga.

What made you start taking rugby seriously? Once Conán got selected for U18 Schools two years ago; He was the first one of us to show that it was possible to be successful on a national and international level - even if you are from Sligo!

Who’ve been your biggest coaching influences? Micky O’Hehir, John Davey and Jimmy Duffy.

What inspires you? The fact that 3 lads from Sligo can perform on an international stage is inspiration in itself!

Do you have a hero? Loads!

How does it feel to represent your country, putting Sligo on the map?

It’s a surreal feeling if I’m honest to have 20% of the starting team coming from a little club in the west, and the fact that all of us were in Summerhill makes the feeling even sweeter!

What’s your most memorable moment in rugby (to date)?

Beating England in Newcastle during the 6 nations. It was my first time playing against England and to win the way we did after being behind by so much puts it at the top of my list of rugby

memories.

Have you had any (major/minor) setbacks? I’ve had loads of injuries over the years, particularly last year, but the key is to not lose motivation and stay focused on your goal.

Are you still studying? I’m currently studying for a degree in Strength and Conditioning from Setanta College.

I started playing when I was around 7 out in Sligo RFC. I enjoyed the game but wasn’t very fond of the Strandhill cold and windy climate back then.

Have you played in various positions? Everywhere in the backs and for an experimental phase at flanker - not really sure why it didn’t work out there.

What made you start taking rugby seriously? I think at the end of my Leaving Cert year I began to take rugby seriously. As I played soccer and gaelic also, I made the decision on which one I wanted to pursue and thankfully I think I made the right decision.

Who’ve been your biggest coaching influences? I think my coaches throughout my youth development in Sligo RFC and Summerhill have been so influential as they are still around me now with the Sligo RFC Senior Team: John Davey, Ross Mannion and Gavin Foley.

I also think I wouldn’t have been even close to selection if it wasn’t for the help of Mossy Lawler our Elite Development Officer in Connacht Rugby.

Do you have a hero/role model? Peter Stringer. He has always been my favourite player since I first started watching rugby and as he

has signed a new contract again with Bath at the age of 38 it just shows how highly they rate him at Bath.

How does it feel to represent your country alongside your former classmates? Starting and beating England was amazing, as the three of us have probably been thinking about it in our heads and on green areas outside our houses since we where young. It’s a memory which will never be forgotten as it was so unexpected, but it makes it sweeter when we can enjoy it together and hopefully with more opportunities to come.

What’s your most memorable moment in rugby (to date)?

Getting to the All Ireland Final with Sligo RFC U17s Have you had any (major/minor) setbacks? Yes I was injured for all last season and didn’t really know if I was going to be able to play rugby this year.

Are you still studying? Yes, I am studying Business Information Systems in GMIT. What next? What are your aims now? At the moment I will be concentrating on college and hopefully get an Academy contract with Connacht.

What’s the dream? To become a professional rugby player whilst having my own business.

Can you share some inside jokes/gossip/pranks from camp? Other than James Bollard being the “loosest man in Dublin” I’m not really sure he gets the slagging for his poor D4 “banter” along with his knowledge of nothing outside Foxrock.

Tell us something we don’t know about Cillian and Conán: Cillian knows every rugby player’s weight and height in Connacht and Conán broke the handle off the All Ireland Club GAA Championship Trophy.

Ireland U20s finished their Six Nations campaign with a third consecutive win to end the championship in third place. It’s been said that ‘there’s something in the water in Sligo’ with three of the starting fifteen hailing from Sligo’s Summerhill College. Tríona O’Donnell caught up with the trio of promising Sligo RFC youngsters following their most recent campaign to find out more.

CARA BUNDORAN CHALLENGE 2016

N

early 2,000 runners took part in the 2015 Cara Bundoran 10 mile/ 10K road races. Weather conditions were mild but the coastal blustery wind certainly made the runners work hard for their times on a course that shows the ruggedly scenic Atlantic coastline in all its splendour. The 10 mile race was won by Conor Duffy of Glasslough Harriers in a fine 52.32. Sligo AC’s Richard Gorman further enhanced his reputation with a super run of 53:57 to finish 3rd overall with North Leitrim AC’s Liam Feely

5th in 54:54. Seamus Somers was 7th, and first M40, with an excellent 57:32. Raymond Byrne was one place inside the top 50 with 1:05:42. Paul Deering finished in 86th place in 1:08:59 and was 3rd M50. The evergreen Enda Whelan, finishing in 174th, was M60 winner category in 1:13:36.

The female winner was Natasha Adams who finished 10th in 58:07. Lucy Brennan, in 68th with 1:07:24, was a comfortable winner of the F50.

Marie Johnston in 104th place won the F40 category in

1:09:53. There were good runs also by Deirdre Deering in 1:18:13, Corinna Kiernan in 1:18:54, Fionnuala Silke in 1:20:02 and Aishling Cawley in 1:20:44. One of our newer members, Eilish Doherty had a fantastic PB of over 12 minutes with a finishing time of 123.40.

Meanwhile Rose Young in 1:28:24 was 3rd F60 The 10k Race was won by Christopher Johnston. The Donegal man, winner of the 2015 Maugherow 10k, raced home in 33:39. David Kearins was 8th overall in 37:22 and 2nd M40. Bill Carty was 24th in 41:01 while Enda Gilmartin was 47th in 44:09. Ruth Walsh was the first club female home on a time of 49.34. There were good runs also by Josephine Marley in 51.28, Kate Carty in 51.43. Zara Mulrooney was the first Junior home for the club in a time of 52.40. Aisling Davey set a new PB in 57.27.

On the whole, the club was well represented with over 80 members taking part in the three races. We are overjoyed with the successes of the club in these events which are a great reflection of the progress made by each individual over the last 10 weeks during the club training programme. Dropping The Ego

I

remember a few years ago I was running a course on inner confidence. As part of the session I asked the group for examples of people that they saw as confident role models.

The usual answers for the time came up such as Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, Tom Cruise & Jordan (maybe the first time she’s been listed with those names). One name that caused a bit of disagreement in the room was Man United’s legendry manager at the time, Alex Ferguson. The disagreement was that around a third of the group thought he was filled with ego & the others just thought he was self-assured. There were examples of him being “pig headed” and examples where he listened to others.

So where’s the line to what is useful & what can hold you back?

Especially in sport I think it’s a very interesting area to focus on. The term ego can be defined loosely as the image we hold of ourselves. Whether it’s that we have a strong opinion of ourselves or a low one. Whether we see others as below us or that we see everyone as better than us.

The link here is not us, our skills or the competition it’s the thoughts and beliefs we have attached to those areas.

Generally I see a lot of people who have big ego’s not exude confidence but simulate it. This can be easy to spotted through the negative manner they may deal with threats or setbacks. Their self confidence is anchored from how they perform or what they do, so its external, rather than from within. There’s a fear of losing or not performing that can lead to anxiety or depression. Not conducive states for peak performance.

At the other end of the spectrum we have someone who has low image of selfimportance. Perhaps not getting involved in sports at all because they are worried at how they might look in front of others. That they need to do something to feel confidence or to feel self worth. Again with someone acting from this state, what he or she are doing is, giving their power away & feeling it can only be gained from doing something they don’t think they can do.

More stress more anxiety.

What I would recommend is that what if you ever fall into either of these camps just

When we are centered (anchored to within) and without ego we can have a completely different experience of life & this will certainly have an effect on our performance. Just to give some comparisons: -Those acting from ego feel discontented because they’re not who, where or what they want to be. Those who are centred feel content with who they are today.

– Those acting from ego are trying to make an impression, and to come across in a certain way. Those who are centred know they are enough as they are.

– Those working out of ego feel they have to prove themselves. Those who are nothing to prove.

Out of these who do you feel is more likely to perform to their best & bounce back from setbacks? Sydney Banks one of my favorite teachers summed things up pretty well I think: “And the idea, psychologically, to explain the game of life is to let people realise: If you drop your ego (your image of self-importance) and simply be you – just you, whoever you are – you’ll find the secret to heaven here on earth…” Sydney Banks.

C

onnacht Motor Club returned to Lagan Quarry in Aughamore on Sunday 3rd April for round 1 of the 2016 Loose Surface Autocross Championship. Wet and slippery conditions greeted the 28 competitors, providing quite a challenge for both man and machine. The club had carried out some resurfacing works as well as making a few changes to the track since the last event and both were well received by competitors.

Drumfin man Alan Lawson took

the overall win after an excellent drive in his Honda Civic, two seconds ahead of Martin Collins in another Civic, with former winner Cormac McElvaney rounding out the top three in his Mitsubishi Evo 7.

Class 1 was a battle of two drivers sharing one Ford Escort.

Johnny Rooney finished first ahead of Simon Love who was taking on a Loose Surface event for the first time.

Class 2 saw a Ford lockout, as rally preparation expert Rodney Donaldson took the win in an Escort ahead of Barry Melly in a Sierra, with Colin Currid third in another Escort.

As the overall winner came from class 3, Martin Collins was awarded first in class, with John Walsh second and John Rowland third, all driving Honda Civics.

Regular forestry competitor Damien McGauran showed his experience on the loose as he took home the award for first in Class 4.

Despite a number of spins during the course of the day, current National Autocross Champion Walter Burke did just enough to win class 5 in his Escort. Martin Kearns, a great supporter of Connacht Motor Club events for many years,

took second in his Talbot Sunbeam.

Class 6 provided a surprise entry as former President of Motorsport Ireland and Clerk of the Course for this year’s Sligo Stages Rally, Joe Corcoran made a return to competition in a Suzuki Swift. Joe showed he is still a man of many talents as he took home third in class.

Patrick Corcoran won the class ahead of Brian Martyn in a Nissan Micra.

Connor Woods took the class 7 honours in his Honda Civic and a fine 8th overall.

Class 9 was won by Monaghan’s Cormac McElvaney ahead of Mayo men John McGeehan and Sean McHugh in Subaru Imprezas.

Gary Egan was the sole entrant in Class 10 but certainly deserved the trophy as he gave it his all in the Fiat Seicento, finishing 10th overall ahead of a lot of more powerful machinery.

Another man having a great result in an underpowered car was Noel Murphy, finishing 7th overall and also winning the Junior award. Noel’s brother Jason also put the Honda Civic to good use as he took the award for first Junior in the 1416 year old category.

The next event for Connacht Motor Club is the Multi-Venue Autotest on 17th April, with Round 2 of the Autocross on 15th May. More details available on connachtmotorclub.com.

NATIONAL AUTOMATION RALLY TEAM TAKE ON CIRCUIT OF KERRY As many Connacht Motor Club members were involved in the Sligo Autocross event on Sunday 3rd April, the National Automation Rally Team travelled to Tralee to take on the Circuit of Kerry. It proved to be a worthwhile trip for the Roscommon based team as Cormac Phelan and Katja Auhl ended the day in 2nd place in Class 11F. Cormac’s father Ciaran along with navigator Tony O’Brien finished 6th in the same class as they got to grips with a new sequential gearbox.

From Diesel Locomotive to Sports Car Ironman-(Kona Qualifier) to National Super Series and Beyond

T

he title above describes exactly where I am at this point in time. After spending the last two years at Ironman I have decided to go short and fast again. This is no easy task at the ripe old age of 40. My goals for this year are to compete in the National Duathlon Champs and then the Super Series. The Super Series is a series of six draft legal events that the best athletes in the country complete in. Unlike the traditional none draft legal races, these races are draft legal. Hence the need to upgrade my equipment.

The Mouse and his new Time Machine- The Bottecchia Tourmalet T1 2016-(just google it) In order for this to happen I have to reinvent myself and my body. It would be like leaving your car into the mechanic and asking him to install another gear or fit a turbo. For the pervious few years I did very little

speed work in my run sessions. I did not need to as Ironman is mostly about strength and endurance-(and also a mobile eating fest). For this reason alone I did not suffer any setbacks through injury which in turn allowed me to stack brick on brick on brick until I had constructed an aerobic wall which was the back bone of my Ironman success in Barcelona.

It is important to mention that I did not do this alone. I had Colm and Ross from Flow Mulitisport guiding me all the way.

You see I just like to train and not have to think about it. Possibly one of my biggest flaws is I like giving myself as I call it ‘’The Wavin Pipe’’ (training to hard).

Myself and Tommy Threshold have a very special relationship. So the lads keep me balanced and add the progression as the weeks and months roll into each other.

This time last year I was 12

stone as I went out to graze for the winter but I was in for the long haul. I had selected Ironman Barcelona in October as my main ‘’A’’ race. I raced sparingly during the summer and I found this tough. When you are used to competing at the top it’s hard to not make the podium. But with a nick name of Tommy Two Pints and a Potta to boot, I should have lowered my expectations. Still they were a means to an end.

Believe me when I tell you I have a few scores to settle this year.

Every athlete needs to have a goal otherwise what’s the point. So when you figure out what you what tell someone stick it on the fridge and get your family to support you.

Achieving a goal is a very special thing, a reward for all the hard work and sacrifice along the way. Not achieving your goal should ultimately make

you stronger as it will make you refocus and more determined to achieve it next time. So pick your ‘’A’’ race and let all roads lead to it. Race your B races pointing in the direction of your North Star.

This year training is going well.

Coach Casey is introducing hard running to get the speed back into the legs and the body is holding all be it with a few creaks. Running 5 minute flat mile repeats at 40 is a delicate balancing act. A problem I have had in the past is that I have felt my aerobic system was able to produce more than I could physically run. A bit like a BMW M5 engine mounted in an old Volkswagen Beetle. I have controlled my weight this year so it is certainly helping. I have also drastically reduced my free sugar intake and trips to McDonnells. You don’t see the Pro’s heading to McD’s after training. Alcohol consumption is also very low. I reckon it’s a large part in injury prevention as it ultimately only leads to dehydration-Up the Irish- No Manors.

Swimming-is steady at the moment, I am not lighting up the pool but I feel I am progressing and its only March Bike-my bike feels strong as I seem to have retained allot of strength from the Ironman. I will need to break through my previous highs. With plenty of endurance and a plenty of pain I think I can take it to a new level.

Running-my running is coming strong and progressing-I will need to run mid 16’s off the bike in the super series to try and clip some of the young guns. It would be great if TI introduced a weighting system like in horse racing and the athlete was handicapped in regard to life demands. Work,

kids, ability to train, stress, weight etc. That would fairly level it. Give some of the young guns a couple of pounds of lead to race with. Only joking, you can only respect the commitment shown by these athletes year in year out.

Equipment- My main man Stephen from Chain Driven Cycles has hooked my up with a fantastic aero road bike. The Bottecchia Tourmalet T1 2016(just google it) - What a machine-weighing in at 7kg fully aero with an Ultegra group set.

This bike just flows and is a dream to ride. All the cables are fully integrated. It also looks great. To coin a phrase -riding this bike “it’s like your bottom is eating chocolate” This bike is on a par with the very best of them and is the best bang for your buck around.. The only weakness in this partnership is the aerobic/anaerobic animal sitting on it.

So there you have it, it’s the Duatlons for breakfast, the Super Series for lunch and The Lost Sheep for desert. My romance with Ironman will have to wait a year. I need to wait till the kids are a few years older before I go to Kona. It may have also been useful if I had told my wife about Kona before Barcelona, the first she heard of Kona was an hour after the race.

latest update from Eamon McAndrew The Season so far I have been training and progressing consistently for the past four months with a view of competing at the National Duathlon Championships which were held last weekend in Mondello. I raced Cong Duathlon six weeks ago and had a moderate performance. It was my first outing and as the saying goes ‘’you can’t just switch it on’’. I ran to hard and then had no legs for the bike which in turn resulted in poor run performance in the final run. I finished third overall.

Predetor Duathlon-Galway I knew I was in good form heading to this race as I could feel the fitness and strength pumping in my veins. In this race I basically had to race the clock form the gun. The competition was lacking as it was not a National Series Event. I ran the first run hard average pace of 3.10 per km for 4 km. The bike route was flat and I pushed hard averaging 39km per hour. I just seemed to have loads of go. I closed the final 3 km run at 3.20 pace. This was a race that I won well; I was pleased with my performance as the clock does not lie.

So four weeks to the National Championships and I had a sinister pain in my knee. The slight pain turned into a slightly bigger pain. I continued to train but I had to dial back the intensity at the time when I needed to be increasing it. This was not good for the head as I felt I had now stopped progressing and as an elite athlete you are always looking to get the final few percent out of your body. Needless to say I was not happy with the final preparations for the Nationals.

National Champs 7km run 40 km bike 4 km run-Draft legal in Mondello Race Track The field was certainly stacked for this race, it was going to ferocious. The conditions were as we say in Mayo ‘’Cat’’- rain, wind and a chilling 8 degrees. I ran with the front group of five with an opening first km of 2.50. The front pack finished on 22.30 for 7 km. bike and a very technical course to complete-12 laps of Mondello Race Track trying to hold the wheel of the bike in front into wet corners. I found the going tough and the lack of bike racing and specific bike skills were my undoing. At the mid way point on the bike I did not have much to race for as my goal was a top five finish. From this point on I started to get cold and then colder. I came off the bike and I felt very stiff. I ran 30m and then started to seize. The cold had gone right into my bones.

My legs would not bend and were locked straight, next my jaw locked. My race was done and I had to take immediate action as these are sure signs of hypothermia. My friends Joe and Lorraine have a camper van and gave me a hot shower that brought me around. I was very disappointed with the race as I had placed myself in a position after the first run to compete. The race was won

by Brian McCrystal with a super effort on the bike and final run.

All you can do in situations like this is learn something to take forward, dust yourself off and get training towards the next goal. However, I did question ever doing a race again. Self pity is a very useless emotion.

Sligo Triathlon What New Sligo Triathlon Spring Sprint The annual Sprint Race will be held on Sunday the 24th of April in the Sports Complex. The distances are 750mswim/20km Bike and 5 km run. There is also a Tri a Tri event which incorporates a shorter 300m swim. This is a great event and there are still a few places remaining.

Wacky Wednesday Race League Sligo Triathlon has also launched its Summer Schedule. This is a series of club races with loads of variations of the three disciplines. The races will be running on Wednesday evenings over the summer months. The duration of these events are typically less than an hour but are completed at high intensity.

These are a great mid week energy booster.

U14’s international basketball tournament “The All Stars held our now annual U14’s international tournament this weekend with teams from across the county and the UK competing in a great weekend of basketball.

The event started on Friday evening until Sunday afternoon. The All Stars had two teams included our U14 (A) which was made up of our U14 and U13 teams. The U14 (B) made up of our U14 and U15 team however a number of players (Luke Sherlock & Paul Frain) missed the Saturday and Sunday games due Irish squad team training.

A league style tournement was brought to a close with a playoff style round up on Sunday. The 5th

and 6th place playoff was completed against the All Stars U14 (A) and the Galway Titans with Titians winning out in the end.

The 3rd and 4th place playoff was competed against our U14 (B) vs the Liffey Celtics with the Celtics taking the spoils.

The final was against Cork’s Ballincollig Basketball Club and our UK visitors Manchester Magic.

A fiercely competitive with the Manchester side taking the victory by 5 points in the last 30 seconds.

The competition was well received and thoroughly enjoyed by all and the families involved.

A big well done to our U16 girls who qualified for the playoff final on Sunday in Letterkenny. The girls came from 7 points down at half time to beat local rivals Warriors by 3 in the Semi Final following a big 3rd quarter where they outscored their opponents by 9 points.

In the final they again found themselves 7 down at half time and rallied back against Letterkenny Blaze but lost out by 3 points in the end. This group of girls finished their season with another typically gutsy display fighting all the way to the end. They did the club and themselves proud.

U14’s Sligo All Stars Vs Sligo Warriors in the NW Cup Final in Ballyshannon The boys faced off against our local rival the Sligo Giant Warriors in the final of the North West Cup. A buzzer 2 pointer by Dylan Walsh pushed the gap to 8 points after the first quarter which the Warriors were unable to claw back. The All Stars held the game with them winning 45-27 and winning the cup !

With very mild but cold conditions at the start things looked promising but the lack of fly about meant it was changeling!! Nonetheless with 25 anglers entered, a reported 13 fish were caught with 10 fish weighed in. Thanks to all for supporting the competition and thanks to The Mayfly Inn, Ballinafad for hosting the weigh in and hot finger food after. The winner of The Mayfly Inn Perpetual Cup was Paddy Carr with a fish weighing 2.722 lbs. Our next club competition will be our Mayfly competition in May, date TBC. ome very good running by many North Sligo athletes in road races in Bundoran and Tubbercurry recently, Paul Kerrigan had a great run in the 10 mile in Bundoran setting a big PB of 70mins 50secs Stephanie Mc Sharry had a good 10 mile run in 81mins 54 secs Fiona Lenehan another solid run in 83 mins 50 secs Rose Kelly and Marie Foran had fine runs with times of 84 mins 45 and 46 secs respectively.In the 10k race Cian McBride ran 35mins 38secs to finish 5th, Eamon Murphy had a very good run finishing in 38

mins 14 secs Ray Gillen is getting better with each race running 38mins52secs,Jimmy Currid showing better form finishing in 39mins 37secs,Ciara Kelly showed good form running 49mins 3 secs,Suzanne Watters ran well to record a good time of 50mins 24secs,Edel Oats ran strongly to finish in 52mins 32secs,Clodagh Quinn on her way back from injury ran well to finish in 53mins 47secs and Louise Kearns done well in her first 10k to finish in 54mins 26secs.Some great performances from our athletes

running in the Tubbercurry 10k on St Patricks Day,Craig Brennan finished 4th in a time of 35mins 9secs winning the o-40 prize,teammate Donal Egan recorded a great new PB OF 35mins 10secs when finishing 5th,Tommy Kelly finished 6th with a good run of 35mins 21secs and Darragh Currid was the 4th member of the team that scored a narrow victory over Sligo AC in the team awards.Jimmy Currid gets better with age he ran a personal best for 10k when winning the o-50 catergory in a time of 38mins 37 secs.Aisling Van

Rensburg led the North Sligo womens team home in a time of 40mins 8secs,teammate Linda Lally set a personal best when finishing in a time of 42mins 57secs,Andrea Horgan was the clubs 3rd finisher in 44mins 37secs and Alison O Sullivan completed the team with a good run in 44mins 52secs to win the team catergory.

Wacky Wednesday Summer Series 2016

GAA CLUB SLIGO DRAW RESULTS Club Sligo Draw results from draws that took place during Half-time in the Sligo v Tipperary Allianz League match in Markievicz Park on Sunday 3rd April

The wacky Wednesday will be returning this year to the training/race schedule for the summer at Sligo Tri. These are a series of short distance races held locally available to all club members. The races will typically be less than an hour and will be fun with a competitive edge.

The races will take the form of: • Duathlons-April and May until the water heats up.... • Aquatons • Super sprints • Hill time trials • Swim/Bike • Multiple Swim/Run as in the Brecca Series We will handicap stronger athletes-incorporate phased starts-put the stronger athletes in teams with weaker athletes or newbie’s. Nobody will get left behind and this will guarantee fun for all involved.

So there will be something for everyone-7/8 races in total-We also intend to make three events very social by having a gathering afterwards with some food and refreshments. We will be expecting a massive participation in the event series as it will be the main social outlet for the summer.

Martial Arts Sports Scholars enjoy more medal success Best of luck to our U14 & U16 Boys teams who travelled to the AE Boet Mataró Club in Barcelona Spain for a weeks training camp in preparation for the AICC’s in April. Thanks to our Spanish Coach Pau Vila for organising the trip.

IT Sligo Sports Scholarship students enjoyed more medal success in kickboxing and karate at recent national events.

Three students won medals at

Kickboxing’s Irish Open in the City West Conference Centre in Dublin. This is the biggest International club competition in Europe, with over 4000 competitors taking part.

There was a double gold medal success for Dessie Leonard in the 69Kg and -74kg categories. Michael Whelan won bronze in the -54kg full contact event, and Alexandra Block also collected a bronze medal in the -65kg continuous category. It was also a successful weekend for the Institute’s Karate team at the Intervarsity tournament in GMIT. Liam Codd, another of IT Sligo’s current Sports Scholarship recipients, won gold in the senior men’s open weight kumite shobu ippon section. This is the third consecutive year that Liam has won this title.

Another IT Sligo student Colm McTiernan, a firsttime competitor at these championships, struck gold in the junior men’s open weight category.

The Sports Scholarship scheme has been in operation at IT Sligo since 2003.

It provides financial and mentoring support to athletes of outstanding talent, many of whom may have already represented IT Sligo, their county or Ireland in their respective sports. Recipients are supported by IT Sligo in keeping up their sporting commitments at the same time as pursuing their educational commitments and goals.

Corran AC Update

The Boys Under 13 Relay team of Michael Lavin, Josh McNulty, Dylan McKenna and Oisín Brennan ran a very fast heat in Athlone, and won it well.

They went on to run in the final, and came in third winning the Bronze medal position. Well done guys!

What great running.

The girls Under 13 Relay team of Elizabeth Tighe, Fiona Whitehead, Eimear Connolly and Emma Cox ran a fantastic heat also- and won it. They went on to run in the final and came in 5th in a very fast race. Well done girls!

ST JOHN'S EASTER CAMP A GREAT SUCCESS

S

t. John's Academy undertook to run a four day Easter Camp over the Easter holidays which turned out to be a huge success despite some very mixed weather.

35-40 children were present each day ranging in ages 5-14.

The atmosphere throughout the week was one of excitement and unbound enthusiasm. The kids had great fun and will no doubt be back for more in the future.

Many thanks must go to those hard working people behind the scenes that make such weeks possible, and also to our dedicated young coaches who put such effort into the week to make it as enjoyable as possible for all the young children involved.

The club will be safe in their hands in the future. A special thanks also must go to the Sligo Gaa coaches (Liam Óg, Benny and Ross) for their contribution on Thursday and Friday.

On Friday there was also a talk about nutrition for the children by Gabriel McSharry which

concentrated on teaching them the difference between good sugars and bad. An information leaflet was sent home which each child. It is important that we all do our bit to keep our kids healthy.

Our next big camp will be the Kelloggs Cúl Camp in July. We

would like to encourage all our parents and coaches to promote what will be a great week for the young players in the St. John's Academy.

Sligo Triathlon Club Sligo Triathlon Club has been given the honour of hosting two Nation Series Triathlons in 2016. It’s a privilege to get to host one of these events but to get two for the second year running show how highly the club & Sligo in general is thought of.

The Olympic length event will take place in August but before that will be the 2016 Pool Sprint which goes ahead on the 24th April. The Sprint comprises of 750m swim distance, 20 km bike and 5 km run. The race is designed to encourage people of all abilities and caters for weaker swimmers also with a separate swim distance of 300m. This shorter swim distance is not a National Series race.

The Swim secton of the race will take place in Sligo Regional Sports and Leisure centre. The cycle will head out to Ballygawly and back with a few tasty hills on route. Finally the run will use the run track at Cleveragh onto the lake trail then back up to the Sports Centre.

Last years event was a huge success selling out. This years event looks to be much the same with only 30 spaces remaining at the time of writing. The event can be entered through the Triathlon Ireland website at http://www.triathlonireland.com

Excellent Easter Meet performances from Sligo swimmers Two Sligo Swim Club members, Maeve Keaney and Carrie McDaid, were competing at the City of Norwich Swimming Club Easter Meet 2016 over the weekend under the watchful eye of Connacht and Sligo SC coach Eduardo Santos. Both girls were competing as part of the 15 strong Connacht Region Swim Team. Maeve Keaney (16) followed up her recent successes in Portugal and Bangor with another fantastic gala, winning one gold and two silver medals over the course of the three days. She won gold in the 100m backstroke, and silver in the 50m and 200m backstroke events. 14 year old Carrie McDaid also had a very positive weekend making two finals, the 100m and 50m freestyle events. Carrie just narrowly missed out on a medal in the 50m freestyle, finishing in fourth place. She was delighted however to have gotten a good PB of 28.69. Carrie also swam a very impressive race in the 100m breaststroke, in a time of 1.24.65, just missing out on a place in the final. Overall the Connacht team performed really well, finishing in 8th place from 40 teams. Well done to all of the Connacht team, and a massive thank you to coach Eduardo and to the team managers, Deirdre Lowe from Athlone SC and Nichola Murphy from Castlebar SC.

While the evening was still young, presentations were done by the Tennis Section for the Reddy Architecture Summer Ladder and the Wehrlys Autumn League. The Badminton Section followed suit and presented the Addams Fashions Team Event prizes. Thanks must go to the Tennis Committee for organizing this event.
