The Joint Managerial Body (JMB) representing about half of post primary schools, said “it is impossible to get a home economics replacement teacher” On the supply side also, in relation to home economics, the JMB said the single training college for teacher graduates in this subject St Angela’s, Co Sligo doesn’t have sufficient capacity to meet demand, and is calling for a second college in the eastern region. The management body has asked the department to come up with guidelines for schools in difficulty on how to make provision for Irish, home economics and guidance counselling in the year ahead. While it welcomes Department of Education efforts to improve teacher supply in the long term, the JMB said short term measures were also needed. There are many other factors, of course. With more than 400,000 post primary pupils returning to school for the new academic the shortage of teachers is reaching crisis level. While rising accommodation costs is a major issue in Dublin, with teachers unable to afford to live there, the impact of rising pupil numbers and the lack of teaching graduates in key subjects is exacerbating the problem throughout the country. The worst affected subjects are Irish, home economics and guidance counselling, which are facing a “severe supply crisis”, according to second level school managers.

Some commentators content the shortage is “not helped by the pay discrimination, which sees teachers paid at different rates for carrying out the same work, the two tier system”. Most important, there are concerns that the quality of education is also under threat with many teachers asked to duplicate, fill roles and teach subjects they are not familiar with.

Calleary was previously appointed as Agriculture Minister following the sacking of Barry Cowen in July 2020 He then resigned following his attendance at the Oireachtas Golf Society dinner in Clifden in August 2020.

The appointment of Calleary to the junior ministry was anticipated, though not certain, and it came a week after the resignation of Robert Troy, following a two week long controversy over his failure to declare property interests.

Post the Covid emergency, and the reopening of international travel, there is also anecdotal evidence of young teachers searching out work opportunities in tax free places, such as Dubai, where they can save for a house The influx of Ukranian pupils is impacting on both fronts the pupil numbers and the requirement for more accommodation Teachers and students are finding it practically impossible to get accommodation in Dublin anyway with the problem compounded by the growth in “phantom” renters who take deposits for properties that don’t exist.

In a statement, the Taoiseach, Michael Martin, said “Dara brings considerable experience to this role, having already served in the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment “A professional and diligent worker, I have no doubt Dara will hit the ground running, in helping indigenous Irish companies face the significant challenges and opportunities ahead, as well as overseeing important legislative reforms of the Personal Injuries Assessment Board ” Speaking after his appointment, Calleary said that he was “delighted”. “I look forward to getting stuck in straight away and continuing to build on the great work my colleague Robert Troy TD has done in the department,” he said. “The Department is full of hard working and talented people and I’m looking forward to working alongside them ” Martin had previously said that Calleary had paid a “high price” for the Golfgate controversy, but had suggested there might have been a “way back” for the Mayo TD At the conclusion of the Golfgate Trial earlier this year, the Taoiseach had said: “In many ways it was a very high price for him to have paid, it was very dignified what he did And in many ways he ensured the continuation of the trust in terms of how we manage Covid 19 as a government that brings in restrictions. The door is always open and there’s always a way back for a person of the calibre of Dara, that’s clear” Calleary has been a TD since 2007 and had previously held a junior ministry in the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment between 2009 and 2011 New Minister for State Dara Calleary pictured with Taoiseach Michael Martin

She beat off challengers from all over the world including Germany, Sweden, Canada, Estonia and the UK to claim the word title Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast show last week Ceola said axe throwing came naturally to her when she first got involved in 2018 “I did kind of take to it a bit like a fish in water,” she said “It was just something that felt so right the first time I picked up that axe and threw it over my head down that range “I didn’t hit the target on the first go but it just made me more determined and then ... I was hooked.” Originally from Grange, Ceola said she trains with the ‘Wicklow Axe Throwers’ in Newtown Mount Kennedy Her training involves more than throwing and she credits part of her success to her pole dancing regime, which helps her build core strength and flexibility

Dublin is particularly badly affected by the staffing supply crisis, with the shortage of accommodation and high rents causing graduates and young teachers to seek jobs outside the capital.

Ceola said she often gets the same reaction when she tells people she is an axe thrower: ‘God, I’ll stay on your good side ” “Generally, the reaction is really positive and people are curious,” she said. “It’s good to see that it’s not so shocking “When I first started telling people I was an axe thrower back in 2018, they were kind of like, yeah it would be you but other than that it was just so unknown, so it’s great that there is a little bit of recognition now.”

THERE was some joy and, perhaps a measure of relief in North Mayo last week with the announcement that former Cabinet Minister Calleary had been appointed as the new Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation

Sligo’s Ceola is World Axe Throwing Champion

Ceola McGowan from Grange in Sligo created her own bit of history for the Yeats County on Sunday last when she took home the top prize at the World Double Bit Axe Throwing Championships in Barrington, Canada

“That’s what you need when you’re axe throwing You need the confidence to kind of, pick up the axe, throw it and go to the competitions and things like that “Not only did pole fitness give me some core strength, flexibility, upper body, it also gave me the confidence to pursue competition and be myself and go for it.”

NEW plans are well advanced for a new development which could enhance the centre of Kiltimagh town Planning permission has been granted for an apartment development at a site adjacent to Heneghan's Pharmacy, on the main street Foxford Pharmacy Ltd. has been granted planning permission for the construction of a four storey apartment block consisting of eight two bedroom apartments, with photovoltaic solar panels (153m2) to a flat roof area at the rear of the block. The plans also include bicycle parking Documentation submitted to council planners explained the history of the site. The derelict east section immediately adjacent to Heneghan s Pharmacy was occupied by the discount store, Sparky's, for many years before its demolition on the grounds of structutral safety Before being a discount store the building had served as a business and lodging for people requiring accommodation. The western section of the site was known as Ruane s and was a wholesale for bottle beers and other merchant supplies. This building was destroyed in a fire in 1944, leading to the deaths of several people, and since then has been left vacant in its ruinous state.

Exciting new Apartment development for Kiltimagh town

The design of the new development, planners were told, was sympathetic to the surround streetscape and would provide for high quality, sustainable living units. It is proposed to re use the salvaged rubble sandstone of the property for the front facade, which will match Heneghan's Pharmacy, with the overall appearance complementing the traditional Victorian streetscape The project has been designed with the older and younger demographics of the community in mind Particular emphasis has been placed on accessibility, leading to the inclusion of an oversized central lift and a landscaped outdoor communal space to encourage urban social integration and activity

Mayo Sinn Féin TD, Rose Conway Walsh has called for an immediate extension of rent pressure zones in Mayo to protect renters and families as well as a number of measures to enable home ownership and protect renters Ms Conway Walsh said: “It is shocking that a landlord would attempt to increase rent on a family from €970 to €1,650 and obviously begs the question why Westport has not been deemed a rent pressure zone “Over the last 2 years I have repeatedly raised the need to expand rent pressure zones in Mayo particularly in Westport “I was told that Westport did ‘not satisfy’ the criteria to be designated a rent pressure zone At that time, I was dealing with a case where rent was being increased 18 percent The Minister refused to act “Now we have a family facing a 70% rent increase The Minister can no longer turn a blind eye to the housing crisis in Mayo We need immediate action to address the situation and protect this family and all the other families that are being crucified by skyrocketing rents and lack of availability “Mayo has not been given the protections that come along with designation of a rent pressure zone Mayo have also been excluded from the affordable housing scheme because the Minister claims that we do not have an affordable housing need This demonstrates that Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and the Greens are completely out of touch with the housing reality in Mayo “There is no rationale for the obstacles put in the way of individuals and families looking for an affordable home in Mayo Families already paying substantial rents should qualify for Council mortgages Blanket bans on planning permissions cannot be tolerated. Building of social and affordable homes must be fast tracked and income thresholds for eligibility must be increased “I have written to the Minister for Housing seeking an urgent meeting to discuss the housing crisis in Mayo ” Government turning ‘blind-eye’ to Mayo’s housing crisis - Mayo Sinn Fein T.D.

ACastleconnor man is making sustainability a priority for one of the country’s leading construction firms.

Irish Water’s new guide on Water Stewardship and Sustainability in the Construction Sector was launched in partnership with Sisk, Construction Industry Federation (CIF), Cairn Homes and the Irish Green Building Council Pictured (L to R): Pat Barry, CEO, Irish Green Building Council; Alan Cawley, Senior Sustainability Manager, Sisk; Yvonne Harris, Housing Programme Director, Irish Water; and Jack Brennan, Environmental Officer, Cairn Homes

John Sisk and Son (Holdings) Ltd has an environmental champion on every one of its sites across the country and, with the help of Irish Water’s Water Stewardship Programme, it aims to put a stop to the wastage of clean drinking water.

“Some demolition projects use water to reduce dust rising but there’s no reason to use mains water. Rainwater harvesting is important and has been implemented across many of our projects These are all easy wins and should be implemented It’s not just a matter of saving water there are money savings too.” When Alan began his third level education the country was on the crest of the Celtic Tiger wave Jobs in construction were ten a penny but sustainability was only a whisper. However, the tide soon turned, the jobs pool dried up and sustainability chat became louder “The environmental side of construction began to grow and today everyone is happy to support sustainability initiatives. My role ten years ago when I was working as an Environmental Advisor is completely different to what I’m doing now; there’s much more of a focus on holistic sustainability now ” Alan supported the development of Sisk’s 2030 Sustainability Roadmap, which was launched in December 2020 and includes 21 targets “We always had environmental KPIs around water, energy, waste and even sustainable timber but over the last number of years, and maybe Covid was a driver for it, we’re going much deeper. This has led to us becoming a carbon neutral business with offsetting last year and by 2030 we want to be carbon neutral without the use of offsets.

Alan Cawley is the Senior Sustainability Manager with John Sisk and Son (Holdings) Ltd and among his goals is a 50% reduction in water use intensity within the next three years compared to the 2019 baseline.

“We want to have 1.7m trees planted by 2029, to coincide with Sisk’s 170 year anniversary We look at the lifecycle of buildings and even have targets on social value. We study the work we are doing in locations, how we are dealing with the community, how are we making sure this is good for the people around, what can we do for the local environment that will improve things? Small changes can make a big difference to the world we live in.”

Graduating with a degree in Construction and Project Management in the middle of a recession left the Sligo native scratching his head but a career side step and a Masters in Environmental Systems has seen him leading the way when it comes to sustainability in the construction industry Since joining the construction company in 2016, Alan has introduced a plethora of sustainability initiatives, including a total revamp of mains water use on the company’s high profile sites across the country like Bonham Quay and Project Kells “Irish Water’s Water Stewardship Programme has been instrumental in helping us meet our targets We identified areas where we could make water savings and actions were taken but then we were struggling to get to the next level of conservation and the Water Stewardship Programme is a great way of getting there “In 2021 we reviewed our systems and processes with 17 people completing a day course aimed at senior and junior engineers who are environmental champions on our sites,” explained Alan “Water mapping opened our eyes up to areas of high water usage. You can see where the water is coming in on site and exactly where it is going Small changes like low flush toilets or waterless urinals, fixing leaks instead of walking by them, and having a trigger hose on site rather than a turn cap tap can make a big difference

The publicity from the movie will reflect Westport in a positive way and showcase our town and what we have to offer, said Mr Hyland It is understood the filming will take place in the Octagan and other locations in the town and there will also be filming at Knock Airport A number of the crew will be staying in Westport for a number of days As well as filming in Westport and Knock Airport, the movie will also be shot at Lough Tay in the Wicklow mountains, Killruddery House and Gardens, Bray Head and the Cliffs of Moher Set in modern day Ireland, Lindsay Lohan will play the leading lady Maddie and the movie is expected to be released on Netflix next year US actress Lohan was one of the biggest teen stars in Hollywood in the early 2000s when she starred in high grossing movies like Freaky Friday, Mean Girls and Herbie: Fully Loaded making her a household name. However, high profile incidents of alcohol and drug abuse resulted in her falling out of favour among Hollywood executives and her career has struggled to take off In the last year the now 36 year old has signed a new movie deal with Netflix and ‘Irish Wish’ is believed to be among the movies she will be filming over the coming months

“Going back to school can cause heightened anxiety!”

A new survey carried by Sims IVF has highlighted the pressure that young people feel to reach certain milestones in their lives The survey, carried out online with over 400 respondents under the age of 45, found that 60% of people feel under pressure from family and friends to reach certain milestones in life, with 53% of respondents feeling under pressure to start a family According to the survey, over 75% of respondents also believe that friends and family members can ask too many intrusive questions around family planning in general. The team at Sims IVF are encouraging people to be mindful of their words, as statistics show that 1 in 6 people will struggle to conceive and may require fertility treatment [i] Respondents reported being asked “if there is any "good" news yet” or that others make assumptions about “when you have kids” Some newlywed respondents agreed that family members felt it was “the norm to assume you are trying just because you got married” 17% of those surveyed reported societal pressure to buy their first home With the current housing crisis, some reported wanting to put off having children until they have a house, which is reflected in recent CSO figures showing a rise in the average age of Irish mothers last year Dr Adeola Adewole, Clinical Director at Sims IVF Swords said: “The feedback from our survey highlighted how historic societal expectations still exist and that people feel pressured to reach certain milestones From engagement with patients, the expectation to start a family or get pregnant by a certain age can cause huge stress for people and this can become more of when a couple or individual is going through fertility treatment Seemingly harmless comments can be hurtful, and the message we want to get across is to think before you ask someone when they are going to have children, as you do not know what they are going through behind closed doors Even well intended questions can put unnecessary pressure on people, who may not be in a position to start a family for many reasons, including health, financial, work or family circumstances ” Of those surveyed, the 25 34 age bracket felt more pressure compared with those in the 35 44 age bracket around having their first child and buying a home, as well as getting married, having a second child or advancing in their career

The recently launched fifth generation Sportage now faces stronger competition than ever before, but it is equipped with all of the right ingredients to excel in the family SUV market segment The new Sportage has a striking, bold look at the front, a distinctive profile, and one of the most cutting edge and tech laden cabins in the business, while its engine line up includes 1 6 litre petrol and 1 6 litre diesel units, along with hybrid technology in the form of mild hybrid (diesel) and self charging full hybrid (petrol) units

On the road the Sportage HEV pulls away most of the time in pure electric mode, and the transition is smooth when the petrol engine kicks in A relaxed approach to acceleration will be rewarded by solid refinement that improves further at cruising speed In corners the Sportage keeps its body roll well controlled, with direct steering making it easy to place the car in the right position on the road The Sportage is a very quiet and refined car, with little outside noise intruding into the calm of the cabin, while excellent visibility from the driver’s seat is yet another major plus point Verdict, Pricing & Warranty. The all new Kia Sportage is a comfortable, practical and extremely well equipped family SUV that is, in my opinion, one of the most stylish and distinctive cars in its market segment. Pricing for the new Sportage starts at €34,500 for the 1 6 litre (115bhp) diesel powered K2 model, with the K3 petrol/electric HEV model I drove priced at €43,150 All Kia passenger cars come with a comprehensive 7 year/150,000km warranty as standard, along with a complimentary 3 year Kia Assist plan for ultimate peace of mind ownership

Striking Design

My test car was a Sportage K3 HEV, which was finished in ever popular Pearl Black metallic paint with Black Saturn cloth and faux leather seat upholstery Standard K3 trim equipment includes 18” alloy wheels, 12 3” touchscreen navigation, LED headlights, heated front & rear seats, heated steering wheel, driver power adjustable seat with lumbar support, rear privacy glass, Telematics System with Kia Connect, dual zone automatic air conditioning, electronic parking brake with auto hold function, rear parking sensors, reversing camera, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, and a suite of advanced safety systems, along with many more comfort, convenience and infotainment systems

At the heart of the new Sportage cockpit sits a state of the art integrated curved dual display which is the focal point for all your driving, information, connectivity, navigation and entertainment needs Boasting a 2680mm wheelbase, the refined cabin in the new Sportage delivers all the space a growing family could possibly need, with rear seat passengers enjoying a remarkable amount of legroom, while a host of clever storage spaces are easily within reach of all occupants Luxurious aluminium finishes on the dashboard and doors, finely detailed sporty air vents with semi gloss chrome bezel, and ambient lighting infuse the cabin with sportiness, along with a premium look and feel The ergonomic cabin layout is equipped with the latest breakthrough tech innovations such as a Multi Mode Touch Display that lets you easily switch between the infotainment and climate controls with a simple touch The exquisitely crafted seats in the new Sportage feature soft touch materials, sophisticated detailing and dynamic colour options, while the driver and front passenger seats innovate even further with an extra comfortable and sporty slimline design Boot space measures in at an impressive 587 litres behind the rear seats, but this can be expanded to a cavernous 1,776 litres when the rear seats are folded flat all of which is greatly helped by a flat floor that makes it easy to slide large loads in and out.

Solid Refinement

The all new Kia Sportage has arrived, and with it comes a bold design that has a clear resemblance to the amazing Kia EV6 (Irish and European Car of the Year for 2022), as well as the upcoming Kia Niro

Premium Look & Feel

The first two generations of the Kia Sportage were conservative and relatively unexciting, but the third generation really sent out a clear message that Kia could offer more than just value for money The Mk4 Sportage raised the bar even further in terms of style, comfort, infotainment and efficiency, and went on to become a volume seller for the brand in Ireland, and right across Europe too.

The new Kia EV6 has been awarded the prestigious Continental Tyres Irish Car of the Year 2022 title, with the EV6 having also won the Continental Tyres Irish Large Car category award at the award ceremony on February 11th It is the second time that an electric vehicle has taken the award as Kia also won the 2020 Irish Car of the Year title with the all electric Kia e Soul Modern Design Inside & Out Kia’s new EV6 electric SUV has a bold, conventional, modern design and is proving itself to be an amazing family car in every respect The EV6 is the first bespoke electric car developed by Kia and sits on an all new Electric Global Modular Platform (E GMP), which will see Kia launch another seven E GMP based models over the next five years. The EV6 is a surprisingly large car, and being 4,695mm in length and 1,890mm in width, it is a halfway house between a family SUV and a regular family hatchback Although the EV6 has a lot in common with the Hyundai Ioniq 5, it is not a cloned version of its cousin Super Fast Charging Capability The EV6 has two features that make it stand out from similarly priced alternatives, the first being the impressive super fast charging rate of 350kW, which means the battery can be topped up from 10% 80% in as little as 18 minutes, or a 100km range could be achieved in as little as four minutes at a supercharger station. In the past it was hard to find public charging stations capable of delivering that much power, but a lot of the new service stations now have superchargers available The second is what is called a vehicle to load (V2L) system which means that the EV6 can power household items, such as a kettle or microwave, or even charge another EV from its charge port. This could prove invaluable in a power cut, or when having a picnic

Two Trim Levels

Test Car My test car was a range topping EV6 GT Line finished in Snow White Pearl paintwork with contrasting black suede and white vegan leather seats. On the road the EV6 is sporty and responsive, with rapid acceleration leading to a 0 100km/h sprint in just 6.2 seconds. The EV6 is a lot of fun to drive on twisty roads and, as a driver, you can play with the throttle to adjust your line in corners in a natural way. It holds the road really well, and it is well controlled when pushed hard, while body roll is kept to an absolute minimum. Autonomous driving technology is easy to use and doesn’t brake harshly, so this is something that can be utilised for maximum driving pleasure on a motorway journey The EV6 is one of the most enjoyable electric cars I have driven, and its striking front & rear LED lighting tech makes the car every bit as dramatic to look at as it is to drive.

Verdict, Pricing & Warranty For family buyers looking for a suitable electric car, the Kia EV6 easily fits the bill With its reliable 500 plus km range, fast charging capability and excellent level of standard equipment, the EV6 is one of the best electric cars presently on the market. Its sleek and stylish appearance offers plenty of kerb appeal, while its impressive technology makes life easier for electric car owners The EV6 Earth and EV6 GT Line are priced at €50,000 and €54,345 respectively (after SEAI Grant & VRT relief) with a 7 year/150,000km warranty for ultimate peace of mind driving Annual road tax is just €120.

NEW KIA EV6 – A WINNER ALL-ROUND.

Presently, there are two trim levels in EV6; Earth and GT Line, with one battery choice. The Earth model sits on 19 inch alloy wheels and has a full charge range of up to 528kms, while the GT Line comes with 20 inch alloy wheels and can achieve up to 506kms from a single charge Additionally, drivers can use paddles on the steering wheel, along with the option of three driving profiles, if they want to change the amount of energy the car uses and retrieves as you slow down However, it is easier, and more efficient, to let the EV6 work it out for you. The car will take into account the distance to other traffic, your speed, hills and curves before making a decision about the best way to use energy. It is so sensitive that it will make drivers who have never driven an electric car feel instantly comfortable The EV6 features a 77 4 kWh long range battery pack paired with a 229PS (226bhp) electric motor, while a heat pump also comes as standard The EV6 Earth comes with a host of comfort, convenience and safety features as standard including Dual 12 3 inch Curved Driver Display Screens, UVO Connect, charcoal grey vegan leather upholstery with Premium Relaxation Seats (electrically operated and heated in the front), memory driver’s seat, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, rear privacy glass, flush door handles, satellite navigation, adaptive cruise control, LED headlamps and a Smart Power Tailgate Upgrading to the GT Line brings with it a panoramic sunroof, remote smart parking, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, GT styling pack, adaptive LED lights, blind spot monitoring system, head up display, suede/vegan leather interior, and a 360 degree surround view monitor The generous 2 9 metre wheelbase in the EV6 ensures excellent head, leg, and elbow room for front seat occupants and, with no need to house a central transmission tunnel, the EV6’s flat floor provides exceptional space and comfort for rear seat occupants too Premium materials are used throughout the cabin of the EV6 for a welcoming feel, while their selection has also been chosen for utmost durability. Sustainable materials have been used, from vegan leather trims to seat fabrics and floor carpet made using recycled plastics, equivalent to 111 plastic 500ml water bottles per car A conventional centre console, along with plenty of pockets and places to put your odds and ends, ensures that the cabin of the EV6 is an easy place to familiarise yourself with, while the infotainment system is easy to navigate and control while on the road. Boot space in the EV6 measures in at an impressive 572 litres, but this can be expanded to 1,300 litres by dropping the rear seat backs when the need arises. An additional small trunk under the sloping bonnet (sometimes referred to as a ‘frunk’) is an ideal place to store the charging cables, thereby freeing up more boot space in the process.

Chiropodist: Martin Mc Nally Tel: 087 222 6260 Westport Foot Clinic Westport, Co. Mayo MEN! IT S NOT A MIDLIFE CRISIS. IT S A MIDLIFE REVIVAL

The information provided to you on this page is for educational purposes only It is not a substitute for medical advice and it is important that you do not make medical decisions without first consulting your doctor or other healthcare professional

Why are second life adventures for women seen as the start of a new life, but men teased for having a midlife crisis? Right chaps! What is this nonsense about men and midlife crisis? We see a lot of stuff in magazines and online about women and how it’s fine to grow old disgracefully and wear what the hell you want and speak your mind and generally be STRONG, and I’m behind that 100% Just getting that out there right now, before you all sharpen your pencils In fact I’m behind that whatever age you are, frankly Go sisters, I’m right there in that corner. Do what the hell you like BUT what about us poor fellows?! When we hit a ‘certain age’ and want to go all crazy we get accused of having a midlife crisis. Where is our support network? Where are the comments I want to read like ‘Hey boyfriend, you do your thing and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise because you’re an absolute king’? We can be Instagram stars and live our best lives after 50 too, you know Joking aside, there really is a bit of a tilt here. A quick search of the web this morning and the phrase ‘signs of a midlife crisis’ turns out a ton of lists that basically take the piss out of us chaps. As I’ve got older (64, since you ask) I’ve found much in the same way I see women defiantly claiming that I feel more ‘myself’ I have more self confidence, I am less worried about the small stuff. I speak my mind, I am kinder to other people

Amazingly, I am solvent and free to do as I please, within reason I try and help causes, and I have raised three amazing children who all now have their own lives And have left the nest reasonably happy and able to fly I’ve hung on to an amazing wife who never stabbed me or anything. I’ve done OK But it’s okay for women? And yet when I suggest that it’s ‘my time’ and maybe I’ll do some new stuff, my wife and family and my friends all laugh at me and tell me I’m having a midlife crisis. “Why don’t you get a motorbike and dye what’s left of your hair pink?” guffawed one of my best mates Well why not indeed? The bike well who wouldn’t want to throw caution to the winds and head out on the highway? I don’t have a great deal of hair, and I’m not convinced pink would suit my colouring. But dammit, shouldn’t I be able to do that if I wanted to? How to spot a ‘midlife crisis’ Signs to look out for (apparently) include going vegan, signing up for sporting challenges, reaching out to old lovers, reaching out to MUCH younger new lovers, buying a toupee, getting a tattoo, buying expensive toys like Lamborghinis (if only), learning to play an instrument or joining a band, taking up an extreme sport, going to Glastonbury you get the picture So explain to me why any of these are bad ideas All these things sound like fun to me (no, not the lovers, for the benefit of my wife who is probably reading this) But really aren’t a lot of these the things most of us would always kinda like to be doing, but during your child rearing or career years didn’t have the time or the money to do? That’s certainly been my experience It’s my time! I’ve sacrificed a whole ton of dreams to support my family whom I love without reservation and have absolutely no regrets about doing so for them But the honest truth is that there is a huge list of things I didn’t do, because I put them first On the one hand, I’m proud of that On the other well, now that’s not my primary function, isn’t it time for me? Just a bit? In the interests of even handedness I should probably identify that men having a midlife crisis often do so as as a result of something happening to them. And of course they’re not just for men Bereavement is right up there for turning your life upside down; empty nest syndrome, illness, retirement, depression, fear of mortality, partners leaving, the weight of caring for elderly parents, loss of jobs all these thing and more can really knock one sideways, and the ‘crisis’ is often simply nothing more than a coping mechanism In those situations, surely it’s sympathy not ridicule that is needed Jeez, whatever gets you through the dark days, hey? If this is you, by the way, maybe look for some kind, professional help with whatever darkness you’re coping with and if this is someone you know well, stop laughing at them But what about the reasonably happy but slightly bored and restle ss blokes like me? Surely we should be allowed to grasp the nettle?! Some of the ‘signs you’re having a midlife crisis’ items I’ve seen on various lists are just stupid A piece in The Telegraph suggests concerns like ‘only reading books when you are on holiday’ or ‘taking out a direct debit to donate to a charity’ are an indication. Sorry, but what sort of crisis is this?! It sounds to me like the same sort of crisis I might have on a wet Sunday afternoon with nothing to do except watch the rain trickle down the window and be trying to decide whether to wipe the window sill or not If you’re going to do a thing, do it properly If I’m going to have a Midlife Revival (and it’s time we stopped referring to it as a crisis) I want it to rock with its cock out God love us, we are not here for very long If you’ve hit 60 and there is a long list of stuff you want to do, you should bloody well start planning it Now So here’s my Midlife Revival list I’m planning to try and tick off as many of these as I can in the next ten years, if I’m lucky enough to live that long.

MIDLIFE REVIVAL LIST 11 THINGS TO DO WHILST I STILL CAN Get to Glastonbury again If I really put the effort into it, I would absolutely love to do Burning Man Pick up my guitar. I’ve got some other friends who used to be in bands and I’m totally into a ‘dad band’ and doing some local pub gigs if I can persuade some of the others I will force my kids to come Do a class that’s normally seen as ‘female’ such as a pottery group or maybe even a cookery class I’m not much cop in the kitchen I’d love to be able to make some amazing dinners for my missus Do Route 66 I know, I know This has to be one of those right up there on the MLC lists But I want to do it Read more books. As in, put down the smartphone and pick up something made of paper and print, and immerse myself in other worlds. I have to face it the receding hairline is now beyond help So it’s a short clip for me next week I’m going to buzz it all off, down to a No2 or so BUT I’m also going to explore wearing dapper hats, and more caps. And talking of dapper my adult life has largely been spent rushing around working or parenting. I would dearly love to try dressing in a more sartorial way I’d like to get a couple of proper suits made, and try to dress formally at least once a week like an adult And use a silver topped cane Take better care of my physical health I’m not about to sign up for a Tough Mudder, but I could eat better, take some vits, do more exercise I’ll feel better too Give up alcohol. Just kidding about that last one But try to drink more discerningly, talk less bollocks, and learn more about wine. Start to build a wine cellar Give something back Not quite sure how. But I’m sure I could put my years of experience and my freer time to good use, doing something for other people. So that’s on the list It’s at the top really, it was just more fun to blaze straight in with the festivals
