St. Vincent de Paul expects record calls I
T’S the annual appeal – but one that’s probably more pressing this year than ever. The rising cost of energy, rent and transport – not to mention the general increase in food and household items – is putting enormous pressure on some families’ weekly budgets. The latest Society for St. Vincent de Paul statement forecasts a record number of calls for support this year, with the expectation the figure could reach almost 200,000 by the end of December. It is appealing for help from the public to assist the people who will seek its services. The society’s national president Rose McGowan said that the country is “facing a perfect storm for families contending with a cost-of-living crisis on multiple fronts”. “Energy prices are soaring, we are seeing rents rise well beyond what people can afford and increasing transport costs are also putting pressure on low-income households,” Ms. McGowan said. SVP is “deeply concerned” that over the coming months, “this crisis will come to a head as households are unable to find extra room in the budget for escalating energy costs”. “In those circumstances they will inevitably turn to SVP for help. Need is the only criteria we apply when people seek our help, but to provide that help we need the generous support of the Irish public that we are seeking through this 2021 annual appeal,” McGowan said. “We are appealing for donations to be made locally, online or over the phone that will help people through this winter and into the new year.” Continued on Page 2

Manorhamilton lady shortlisted for major Volunteering Award he announcement that popular Manorhamilton lady and local Girl's Brigade pioneer, Shirley Hewston, has made it into the final select list of three candidates from which the prestigious national Volunteer Ireland Volunteer Manager award winner will be announced in Dublin next month has been received with much joy in her local Brigade. A number of other leaders of Manorhamilton Girl's Brigade said they are delighted that their Captain and Team Leader Shirley had been shortlisted as one of the nominees in the category Volunteer Manager for the Volunteer Ireland Awards 2021. “This is in recognition for leading the 40th Company Manorhamilton Girls' Brigade for over the last twenty-five years. It is such an amazing achievement for Shirley, and our whole Girl's Brigade team are thrilled at this announcement.” Shirley founded the Manorhamilton Girls Brigade in 1997 and has worked alongside and brought together numerous volunteers in all those years uniting the whole local community, and other groups to create amazing experiences for young girls, their families and the community as a whole.
They said: “As she herself grew up in Dublin from the age of three years; so she understood the value an organisation like this could bring to young girls in Manorhamilton. For the past twenty-five years every Thursday night Shirley has devised a varied and creative programme of activities designed to educate, challenge and inspire girls of every background and ability from age 3 years to 18 years, on a completely voluntary basis. “The success of an organisation of this kind, is down to Shirley who leads a team of volunteer helpers by passing on her passion and dedication to them, which just infectious. Over the years there has been 600 girls and young women who have been part of the group, and this is a testament to the person she is and what she gives to the GB members. “Shirley realises the importance of every member, including her team of volunteers, and actively encourages and grows the team through building excitement and volunteering training skills by including the next generation. She introduced a young helpers team which are made of young teenage members who volunteer

Caring Dental team of Year award for Ballina practice A BALLINA dental practice has won the Colgate Caring Dental Team of the Year award 2021 for its commitment and work in preventing serious dental injuries on the playing field. Dr. Paul Dunne’s practice, which is based at Kevin Barry Street in Ballina, was nominated by Knockmore GAA Club, in recognition of the practice’s outstanding care and service to the local GAA community, having provided the club with dental mouthguards for all its adult club players. It is also an occasion for a double celebration for the Dunne’s, who live in Knockmore, as their club has just captured the Mayo county senior title, After treating two serious dental sports injuries over a relatively short period of time which resulted in tooth loss, Dr.

Dunne contacted Knockmore GAA Club to see how many of its adult players were wearing properly fitted customised mouthguards. On learning that only a few players had properly fitted dental mouthguards, Dr. Dunne and his team at Ballina Dental Practice offered to provide individually fitted mouthguards to all the adult players in the club, in both male and female codes, at no cost to anybody. Knockmore GAA Club coach Patrick Kelly described it as a 'herculean' task to pull off. “Over two Friday afternoons, Dr. Dunne and his team stayed back after work and took impressions from 80 players, with impressions taken from three players every 15 minutes under Covid-19-compliant conditions.
“We didn't ask for it,” he continues, “it was volunteered by Dr. Dunne out of his genuine concern for our players’ welfare having seen first-hand the inadequate protection that across-the-counter mouthguards provide in severe collisions. It was a wonderful act of kindness by all concerned and has made a super contribution to our community,” he said. The awards were held at the Intercontinental Hotel, Burlington Road, Dublin, on Saturday night. The awards celebrate dentists that have provided dental treatment and care over and above expectations and often with transformative effects, as nominated by patients and the public. There were almost 1,000 nominations for this year’s awards.

resident Michael D. Higgins was presented with a copy of the recently published The Book of Sligo by Niall Henry of Blue Raincoat Theatre Company. A free copy of the book is also being delivered by hand through a county-wide network of local volunteers to each of the 24,500 households in Co Sligo. Inspired by the life of Colmcille, the 1500th anniversary of whose birth occurs in 2021, and his reputed association with the Battle of the Books which is said to
have taken place on the lower slopes of Benbulben, The Book of Sligo will be a significant county-wide cultural initiative, and an important part of Sligo’s Decade of Commemoration. It features contributions from each of Sligo’s 41 recognised civil parishes collected and curated specifically for this project, The Book of Sligo will portray how the landscape of the county has shaped its people, places, history, and culture, and how we in turn have shaped
and affected this landscape over several millenniums. The Blue Raincoat Theatre Company assembled two project teams to deliver The Book - an editorial team comprising Sligo-based literary figures, musicians, historians, and archaeologists responsible for curating the book and a group comprised of experienced project organisers and administrators responsible for co-ordinating the delivery of the book to every household in the county.
Cannabis growhouse discovered in Sligo -man charged A MAN IN his 40s has been charged in relation to the seizure of €208,000 worth of suspected cannabis and the discovery of a growhouse following a search in Sligo on Sunday. The man was arrested along with three other men after gardaí discovered a growhouse constructed within a building in the Ballymote area of the county which contained 85 cannabis plants at various stages of growth. The plants have an estimated value of approximately €68,000. Suspected cannabis herb with an estimated value of €140,000 was also discovered by gardaí and seized. All of the drugs seized have a total estimated value of €208,000 and will be sent for analysis. The man is expected to appear before a special sitting of Carrick-OnShannon District Court at 4pm today. Two men, aged in their 30s, have been released without charge. One man in his 40s is still being detained at Ballymote Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

‘Shirley Valentine’ production in Westport Town Hall Theatre in aid of Jack & Jill ‘Shirley Valentine’, Willy Russell’s hilarious comedy, is coming to Westport Town Hall Theatre from the 25-27th November 2021. This heartwarming and critically-acclaimed play tells the story of a stuck-in-a-rut housewife who takes the chance to taste freedom and adventure on a holiday in Greece. Her children have grown and her marriage is stale. She is fed-up with her run-of-the-mill existence as a middle-aged housewife who only talks to the wall. Shirley has just been given a chance to go abroad for the first time in her life. Just thinking about this trip of a lifetime has caused her to re-evaluate her youth, her marriage and motherhood. In this play, the audience joins Shirley in her kitchen for a good gossip, a good laugh and maybe a little tear in this clever, heartwarming comedy. This amateur production, as well as being a terrific night’s entertainment, is being held as a fundraiser for the Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation. This charity funds and delivers specialist home nursing and end-of-life care for children from birth to six years of age who have highly complex or life-limiting medical conditions. Jack & Jill support 402 families throughout Ireland, including 6 families in Mayo and 9 families in Sligo. Each ticket to the show, which costs €20, will help fund inhome nursing support, with all proceeds being donated to the charity. The title role of Shirley will
be performed by local talent Colette McGinty who is no stranger to the stage. Colette’s recent ventures on stage have been in darkly comic roles, having played Maureen Folan in ‘The Beauty Queen of Leenane’ by Martin McDonagh with St. Patrick’s Drama Group and Joan Smiley in Peter James’ ‘The Perfect with Balla Drama Murder’McGinty Collette Group. Colette is looking forward to embracing a lighter side of comedy in this onewoman show, “It has been great fun getting to know Shirley over the last few months. The script is an absolute gem – funny, thoughtprovoking and moving. Every rehearsal shows another side to the character and it has been great to get to play such a bubbly, witty character.” The play is directed by Alanna Barrett. Alanna has been involved with drama her whole life but in recent years has stepped into the role of director and producer. Alanna is a founding member of Castlebar Musical and Dramatic Society and directed their first three musicals,plays and sketch shows around Mayo and Sligo. he Chairman and Board of the North Mayo Heritage Centre, and the Kellett family of Enniscoe House and Enniscoe Estate recently celebrated the awarding of the Green Flag and the Heritage Flag by An Taisce. The Heritage Flag award has been set up by An Taisce this year, and seven unique sites have been chosen, one of which is the Enniscoe Estate. Enniscoe House is recognised as a house of National Importance and has remained in the same family since it was built. The first house was built in the 1740’s, with a substantial addition in the 1790’s, transforming it into a classic Georgian house. By the late 18th Century, the garden walls enclosed three acres, complete with propagating house and stone built orangery. Gradually over the next 150 years the gardens and estate took on the appearance that is still evident today. This year Enniscoe House was chosen by the Georgina Campbell Guide as “Country House of the Year”, and by the Good Hotel Guide as the Editor’s Choice for a Fishing Hotel. Susan Kellett and her son, DJ Kellett, have been welcoming visitors to the house and grounds for nearly forty years. The North Mayo Heritage Centre, which is located behind Enniscoe House, has been dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of the region since the 1990s. The Heritage Centre comprises a Family History Research Unit, holding a data base of over 1.2 million records, a small museum, cafe, and conference centre. NMHC is a member of the Irish Family History Foundation and provides an international genealogical service through the Roots Ireland website. Positive Developments I am delighted to see such positive developments for everybody in this community coming after two very long
and difficult years’ said Cllr. Michael Loftus (Chairman of The North Mayo Heritage Centre) ‘it’s a credit to all the hard work done for generations by so many people associated with the Enniscoe Estate and bodes well for its future.’ The original three acre walled garden was divided into two gardens in the 1870’s. The Ornamental Garden was restored in the late 1990’s under the Great Gardens of Garden Restoration Programme and has been open to the public since 1999. The second garden is home to one of the oldest certified organic gardens in the country. For 26 years Enniscoe Organic Garden has grown a wide variety of fruit, vegetables, and herbs. These are used by a number of restaurants in the area as well as being available to the general public who visit the garden. In recent times the quality of the produce has been recognised by Bord Bia at the National Organic Food awards as well as by leading chefs such as JP McMahon and Derry Clarke. In 2019 The North Mayo Heritage centre began a collaboration project with the Reel Deel Brewery in Crossmolina. Working together they have grown the ingredients for an organic craft beer. ‘Market research has shown us that consumers are now looking for an organic craft beer’ said Marcus Robinson of the Reel Deel Brewery. ‘My problem has always been where to find the ingredients that were organic, local and would produce a really good quality end product’. An area of the garden has been set aside to become the new Hop Plot. ‘We researched the variety of hop to ensure a healthy crop, and we already knew that the walled garden has its own unique microclimate which allows the plants to do extremely well here in the West of Ireland.’ said Aine Bell (garden
supervisor). During last summer a support trellis was constructed as the ground was prepared for planting in the spring. Hops grow very fast and very tall, each year our variety will grow at least 4m in height before being harvested’. ‘In the craft brewing industry you have to know everything about your ingredients,where they came from, how they have been grown and the quality of the handling. What we are doing is called a green brew. This means the hops will be harvested in the morning and transported the 5 km to the brewery for the process to start immediately. You can’t get much fresher than that.’ said Marcus Robinson. ‘Today, we get to taste the first trial brew’. It means that as well as creating this unique organic craft beer from locally grown hops we are encouraging job creation and upskilling. We have become very good at identifying, developing and delivering new opportunities which will further enhance this community.’ And, as if all this was not enough excitement, this year also saw the setting up of a partnership between Susan Kellett, Enniscoe Estate, and the National Parks and Wildlife Service. Launched by Minister for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan, in July 2021, the fifteen-year agreement will see many rare breeds on the Enniscoe lands. This summer Connemara Ponies, Irish Moiled Cattle, Cladoir Sheep and a number of Old Irish Goats were all settling in. “It seems an excellent match between my ambition to preserve and enhance this unique corner of Mayo and the work of the National Parks and Wildlife Service” Susan stated on the occasion of the Minister’s visit.

Sligo Science Festival brought out the best R unning from the 6th - 14th of November, this year’s Sligo Science Festival, sponsored by Science Foundation Ireland and AbbVie was a blended delivery of live, in person events and online workshops and talks. The Sligo Science Festival was part of SFI’s national Science Week with this year’s themes being; “Explosive Science” and “Creating Our Future”. The eight-day event kicked off with the
ever-popular Science Fair in association with AbbVie on over the weekend. This year saw a return to on-site activities, both indoors and outdoors with a fun and informative science packed weekend for all the family at the Institute of Technology Sligo. The festival highlighted STEM engagement throughout the week by delivering science shows, workshops, demonstrations and displays, together with a comprehensive programme of talks, road shows, exhibitions
and debates for all ages and backgrounds. AbbVie also supported the festival with a number of interactive shows on Sunday (7th of November) with special guest, Dr Niamh Shaw. Niamh is a budding astronaut and she shared her space and science stories of her adventures so far, and much more. The programme of event on the final week ranged from rocket workshops to science circuses and talks on forensics to how cats arrived in Ireland.

Leitrim’s first recipient of Ambassador Award for ‘Farming For Nature’ Michael McManus, Spa Cottage, Carrick-onShannon recently received the Ambassador Award for ‘Farming For Nature’. He is the first recipient of this award in Co Leitrim. The award was presented in Kinvara, Co. Clare on October 23 last. At the award ceremony Dr. Brendon Dunford of the Burren Programme said “farming for nature ambassadors are so encouraging and inspirational. “They provide a true testimony of how farming and nature must work in harmony and those simple actions can make a big difference. Farming ambassadors need our respect gratitude and support. “They embody all that is great about rural Ireland and offers hope at a time of climate and bio-diversity crisis”. Michael McManus has been an organic farmer close to Carrick-on-Shannon at Spa Cottage Farm since 2016. He works on three distinct soils and landscapes ranging from limestone outcrop, sandy loam and shale. The farmersjournal.ie recently featured Michael’s farm with his sulphur well and his diversification venture where he has developed a brand of skincare products from the renowned 17th century sulphur well. Also, with the support of Leader funding Michael intends to develop a visitors’ spa experience for the west of Ireland in the coming years outside of Carrick-on Shannon.

ublin City University students Oisín Ruane (Castlebar, Co Mayo), Aodhán O’Donoghue (Castlebar, Co Mayo), Cillian Byrnes (Castlebar, Co Mayo) and Odhrán Lang (Castleknock, Dublin), with their coach Dr Brian Corcoran, will represent Ireland at the international engineering and commerce competition, ENGCOMM 2022 after their team won this year’s ESB Inter-Colleges Challenge. DCU pulled ahead in the grand final against stiff competition from Munster Technological University and University of Limerick to produce one of the tightest finals in the events eightyear history. Well done to the Mayo lads and all involved with team after a great result. The teams were tasked to set out a vision and a specific design for an energy storage solution to help achieve net-zero carbon emissions, using the town of Athlone as a proof-of-concept location. The challenge constrained choices by excluding batteries and hydrogen. All teams rose to the challenge and proposed a range of ideas including compressed air, stacked block
and flywheel technologies. The winning team (pictured) were presented with the prestigious McLoughlin perpetual trophy at Dublin City University – in line with Covid-19 protocols. The team were coached by Dr Brian Corcoran, Head of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at DCU – who has coached a number of the university’s teams in previous ESB Inter-Colleges Challenges with this being the first time for them to take the firstplace prize. They will now represent Ireland at the international case competition, ENGCOMM 2022, which will take place in Montreal, Canada from 22nd to 26th February 2022, where they will compete against other universities from around the world. ESB Inter-Colleges Challenge 2021 took place online for the second year running due to Covid-19, over the course of two days on Thursday 4th and Friday 5th November, as 32 students from colleges across Ireland pitched their creative solutions to an expert
panel of judges. Participants were tested over a full range of engineering, financial, marketing and team-working skills. University College Dublin won the Best Innovation Award and Maynooth University took home the Best Commercial Solution (Marketing and Finance) at the event. Following the event, Denis O’Leary, ESB’s Executive Director, Engineering and Major Projects, said: “The quality of the work undertaken by each of the teams in the competition really demonstrates their ability to think critically and creatively about the challenges facing Ireland and the energy sector in the transition to a low carbon future. Each team worked incredibly well together this year as our event again took place online due to Covid-19. I was hugely impressed by the novel solutions to the implementation of large-scale energy storage that each team pitched to the expert panel. I would like to thank all teams for their participation and wish Dublin City University the very best of luck as they represent Ireland on the international stage at ENGCOMM 2022.”

Ballina’s local response to Climate Change T 10
O coincide with the end of COP 26, the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Ballina demonstrated its commitment to this vital project with two days of talks, workshops, presentations, demonstrations and walks, a collaborative effort by a number of groups in the town on the weekend of Friday and Saturday, 12th and 13th of November. Mayo’s Call to Action on Climate – “Local Action, Global Impact” created an inspirational message for all communities out there. This first ever Mayo climate action gathering, and the first significant event in the town’s quest to become Ireland’s Greenest town, was an initiative of the Ballina Green Town group itself, in partnership with the Mary Robinson Centre, Mayo County Council, Chamber of Commerce and the West of Ireland Climate Action Regional Office. It follows the government’s recently announced Climate Action Plan (2021) which sets out a roadmap for Ireland to become a climate-neutral economy by 2050. Mayo County Council has been working with local communities in recent times to encourage behavioral change and support businesses in the transition to a lowcarbon society. justice campaigner and former president, before the launch of the County Council’s Climate Action Signage Strategy. The signage is designed to create awareness of climate action measures being taken at many locations across the county, in addition to highlighting some of the actions being taken to reduce emissions and enhance biodiversity. At each location these measures are revealed in the signage through the use of QR codes that can be scanned with a smartphone.
DUNCAN STEWART – TELLING IT AS IT IS Perhaps one of the most significant events of the weekend was The Green Town Opportunities debate on the final (Saturday Night) in Ballina Arts Centre with special guest, broadcaster, environmentalist Duncan Stewart. Earlier in the day he had expressed shock at some of the government responses to the pyrite crisis in the north-west. Duncan complimented Ballina on the bottom-up and top-down approach locally to the vital issue of climate change. He felt confident that if the government takes this model (what’s being done here) and replicates it in towns, villages and cities across Ireland we could really tackle this problem and meet our targets for 2030 and 2050. It would address climate change and give a future to our children.

Earlier Ballina Green Town’s Kevin Loftus had presented an impressive vision of Ballina for the future. “Science is incontrovertible and the responses we make now are so important”. The streets of Ballina are car-dominated and the town has to become more people-focused and experienced based and better connected. The opportunities the green economy can bring are immense – retrofitting, eco-tourism, renewable energy and the opportunity to transform our high streets and create valuable social spaces. The river is a vital asset, but at present it is simply an area where traffic circulates. The bridges are the only links between the town centre and the periphery where all the amenities are. This creates enormous traffic congestion. Ironically, it could all be improved with a few small connections, creating a new walking/cycling environment, linking various parts of the town. The basic infrastructure is already there. Speaking about the global issue Duncan said we all need to see what we have to change. We are not
getting answers from our leaders – they are leading us over the precipice. As a species we have altered the atmosphere; CO2 emission level is 50% above what it has been in 800,000 years. “Everywhere, we are destroying habitat, nature and wildlife”, he said. In Ireland, the farmers are under pressure but they should be incentivized towards new opportunities such as biograss and other products instead of concentrating on beef production. While Mayo County Council Director of Services Tom Gilligan, in his address, received a positive response when he revealed he had decided to reduce the number of cars in his household he found
himself under pressure in other areas. The revelation by Kevin Loftus that the last remaining council-owned “green space” in the centre of Ballina might be earmarked for a car park by the council received a cool response by the attendance. According to Duncan such a decision would send out the wrong signal at this time and if it materialized he would highlight it in his TV programme in the new year. The Mary Robinson Centre (and the other groups) are continuing to invite individuals, schools and businesses with a passion for Ballina and the environment to pledge to do THREE things for the environment. This can be done by accessing the Mary Robinson Centre website.

Hand-blown glass potatoes on display at Castlebar National Museum
A
stunning installation of 1,845 hand-blown glass potatoes remembering the Great Irish Famine has gone on display at the National Museum of Ireland Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. Musician and artist Liam Ó Maonlaí performed the official opening of 1845: Memento Mori on Saturday evening, 13 November. He described the installation, which has taken Seattle-based artist Paula Stokes 15 years to complete, as a ‘labour of love’. The title of the project references the year the potato blight came to Ireland, marking the beginning of a period of mass starvation, disease, and emigration. The artwork is on display in a room known as the ‘Landlord’s Library’ at Turlough Park House, where tenants of the Fitzgerald family would pay rent in the 1800s. As a modern-day member of the Irish Diaspora, Stokes reflects on her own history as an emigrant to examine historical events that have shaped the present. She has also opened a dialogue on how one can learn from the past, and in doing so, hopes to elicit compassionate reflection that transcends the polarising politics of our current time. Speaking at the official opening, Mr Ó Maonlaí said: “We live in a world where abstract images become law. Where to turn? What product to buy? What person to love? Truth and common sense get pushed aside. The artist takes the abstract and re-aligns it with a sense of truth and common sense. Paula Stokes is the artist. Here is a labour of love. The viewer’s mind is as much a colour in the palette as the glass and the
room and building the glass occupies. We are all in her art.” Audrey Whitty, Deputy Director/Head of Collections and Learning at the National Museum of Ireland, said: “We very much welcome this installation to the National Museum of Ireland, where visitors will have the opportunity to appreciate and engage with not only the beauty and power of the work, but also the deep emotional and complex themes with which this installation deals. Paula adapts this artwork for each specific location and this new setting of the Landlord’s Library
here at Turlough Park House, where tenant farmers once paid their rent for what was probably a subsistence farm on a tiny parcel of land, adds another thoughtprovoking layer to Paula’s work.” Welcoming the official opening of the installation at Turlough Park, Paula Stokes said: “The form of the installation differs in response to specific locations, changing shape and volume depending on light, accessibility, and exposure of each site. Finding context that is anchored in place, and its history, is part of how the work is uniquely
created for each location. In previous installations it has taken the form of a cairn (a traditional stone pile). This presentation is in the Library of Turlough House, a space typically associated with knowledge and information. In this setting the art itself serves as a visual portal to a significant event in Irish history that transcends the written word and language. It spills out across the wooden floor of the Library like a shroud of fragile glass on which no-one would tread.” 1845: Memento Mori first opened at Strokestown Park House in County Roscommon in May 2021 and
has been shown since then at Johnstown Castle Estate in County Wexford and the Ulster American Folk Park in County Tyrone. It is on display at Turlough Park House, the former ancestral home of the Fitzgerald family, at the National Museum of Ireland Country Life just outside Castlebar, Co. Mayo, from 13 November 2021 until 28 May 2022. THE issue over the controversial decision to change the name of Ballycroy national park rumbles on. Mayo County Council have passed a motion where they claim they should have the final say on any potential name change of the national park in Ballycroy. The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) have indicated that
they intend to drop Ballycroy from the title of the national park and rename it the Wild Nephin National Park. At yesterday’s monthly meeting of Mayo County Council, Achill-based councillor Paul McNamara proposed a motion that the local authority should have the final say in what the national park is officially named.
“To leave out the name Ballycroy is a total insult to the people of the area. The building [national park visitor centre] is in Ballycroy and the people have welcomed it with open arms for the past 15 years. We proposed at our municipal meeting that if the name is to be changed it should be changed to Wild Nephin
Ballycroy National Park and we also proposed that if the name is to be changed it will come before this council to be approved,” said Cllr McNamara. He noted that when the name Ballycroy National Park was first proposed by Cllr Gerry Coyle and former council Frank Leneghan, it came before the council for
approval and the same should happen with any name change. “The then Minister Sile DeValera gave the authority by the then 31 councillors to name it and they names it the Ballycroy National Park. I am proposing here that if the name is to be changed it is to be done through the authority of this chamber.” The motion was supported and seconded by Cllr Gerry Coyle as well as some of the other councillors in the Belmullet/Westport Municipal District. Cllr Seán Carey said that since the renaming of the park was first mentioned, he has been inundated with calls from people disappointed that Ballycroy will be omitted Cllr Brendan Mulroy added that it was not acceptable that Minister Darragh O’Brien, who is responsible for the NPWS, will not meet with them to discuss the matter. He welcomed the backing of the other councillors in the chamber and said the dropping of the name Ballycroy will not be happening.

A
udi is setting out its stall to become the paramount supplier of premium electric vehicles. The company has been slowly ushering in its e-tron family of pure EVs since 2018 and the slow trickle of bespoke models is finally turning into a flood. The new Audi etron S comes with a more conventional SUV-style body shape than its e-tron S Sportback sibling, but uses the same electric underpinnings. Thus far, the Audi approach has been to give its customers exactly what they expect, with no unwanted surprises. So you get a smart, beautifully put together interior, with excellent tech, graphics and infotainment systems. You also get a chiselled, rather dynamic exterior that is similar in appearance and proportion to Audi’s extensive range of conventionally powered and hybrid cars. A world first The new e-tron S models have two electric motors on the rear axle and one on the front axle, making them the first mass-produced electric cars in the world to have three electric motors. Their drive layout is based on the modular construction principle - an adapted design of the more powerful electric motor that powers the rear axle in the Audi e‑tron 55 is now installed on the front axle. The front electric motor from the e‑tron 55 operates together with a structurally identical counterpart and individual modifications in the rear. The highvoltage battery has a gross energy capacity of 95 kWh, of which 91 percent (86 kWh) is usable. With one battery charge, the Audi e‑tron S achieves a range of up to 360 kilometres on a WLTP combined driving cycle. Two of the electric motors operate on the rear axle,
and their intelligent drive control raises vehicle safety, and dynamic handling in particular, to a whole new level. In addition to the standard quattro all-wheel drive system, the e-tron S is equipped with electric torque vectoring with active and fully variable torque distribution on the rear axle. The electric motors combine to produce an impressive 496bhp and an astonishing 973Nm of instant torque. As a result, the mighty e-tron S can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 4.5seconds, and can reach an electronically-limited top speed of 210km/h. Low Centre of Gravity The large high-voltage battery ensures a balanced distribution of the axle loads and is installed in a low position comparable to that of the three electric motors. This lowers the car’s centre of gravity, which offers great advantages in terms of handling. The progressive steering, whose ratio becomes increasingly direct as the steering movement increases, emphasises the sporty character. The suspension has S-specific tuning, while the Audi drive select system offers seven driving profiles. The e-tron S is equipped with 20-inch wheels as standard and comes with tyres that are 285 millimetres (11.2 in) wide, so the car feels very well planted on the road in all circumstances. A major element in the aerodynamics of the e-tron S is the controllable cooling-air inlet with ducts to cool the front wheel brakes. It remains closed as often as possible so that the airstream flows over the bonnet with almost no turbulence. As part of efficient thermal management, each e‑tron is equipped with a heat pump as standard. It draws heat energy from the waste heat of the drive components, thereby
increasing the range by up to ten percent. The sophisticated recuperation concept also contributes to the vehicle’s efficiency. Drivers can select between three recuperation levels, the highest of which allows them to experience a noticeable one-pedal feeling. The electric motors remain active and can convert up to 270 kW of peak performance when braking from a speed of 100 km/h. Test Car My test car was an Audi e-tron S, which was finished in stunning Navarra Blue metallic paint. An extensive array of standard features adorn the e-tron S, while LED front and rear lights perform a dynamic
unlocking and locking signature, which looks absolutely amazing – especially when it is parked in the dark. Stunning 20” alloy wheels, adaptive air suspension, luxuriouslyappointed electrically-adjustable leather seats, Audi MMI Navigation Plus, MMI Touch Response and a suite of cutting-edge safety features all come as standard equipment, along with semi-autonomous drive features. Steering wheel-mounted paddles allow the driver to adjust the intensity of the car’s regenerative braking, and this is something that is very easy to get used to on a daily basis, while enhancing the car’s battery range too. Inside the e-tron S is a supremely comfortable place to be and its spacious cabin provides leg, shoulder and elbow room by the bucket load. Open the electronically-operated tailgate and a 660-litre cargo capacity greets you, but in the event that you need
even more space, the rear seats can be dropped to reveal a gigantic load area. The e-tron S can be charged in a number of easy ways – at home using a domestic socket or a wall box charger, or on the road at a high-powered charging station. Additionally, the e-tron S can be charged to 80% of its capacity in as little as 26 minutes at a 150kW charging station. The e-tron S drives with all of the gracious poise and precision that we have come to expect from a modern Audi, with masses of power available for safe overtaking and outright driving thrills. Price & Warranty While the standard fully-electric Audi e-tron range starts at €73,515, the hugely desirable e-tron S is priced at €117,000. Annual road tax is just €120, and Audi’s 3year/90,000km warranty comes a standard.

What should we be eating to protect ourselves against cancer?
C
onfused by what we should be eating to stay healthy? Learn which foods can protect against cancer and which should be avoided According to Cancer Research eating a balanced diet could prevent one in 10 cancers so it is important to know which foods we should be eating and which we should avoid. The whole healthy eating regime is baffling as some foods can be good for us in one way but not so good in another and there always seems to be yet another new trendy, cure-all superfood to eat! Here we share with you the foods that research suggests will protect against cancer and those that do not and so help you to make more informed choices when you go food shopping. It is worth remembering that alongside eating healthily, we should be maintaining a healthy weight through exercise too. Which foods should we buy? Plenty of fruit and vegetables Research suggests that one in 20 cancers could be as a result of not eating our recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. So eating more fruit and veg is not only good for maintaining a healthy weight it can protect against cancer too. Fruit and vegetables are packed full of nutrients which all protect against cancer in different ways. Nutrients such as carotenoids are antioxidants that help stop cells being damaged by free radical chemicals and folate found in fruit and veg helps to repair DNA. But they don’t only contain nutrients they are high in fibre too. Evidence suggests that fibre rich diets can protect against cancer –
this is explored in more detail below. It is important though to eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables as each contains different nutrients. We can’t get a quick fix from supplements either as research suggests that nutrients don’t reduce cancer risk in the same way when taken as a supplement and in some cases may even increase the risk of disease. Ditch the white – eat wholemeal bread, pasta and cereals, brown rice and pulses A diet high in fibre can, in particular, protect against us against bowel cancer. So swap the white bread, pasta and rice for wholegrain and choose lentils, kidney beans and chickpeas along with plenty of fruit and vegetables instead. Fibre produces a chemical called butyrate which protects us by speeding up the time food stays in contact with the cells lining the bowel. This in turn ensures that more harmful chemicals have less time to be absorbed by the body. It has also been discovered that if we eat plenty of fibre than it may counter the effects of eating red and processed meats too.
Eat fish once a week Studies have shown that one 140g portion of fish a week can protect against bowel cancer. Furthermore, although more research is needed, it is likely that oil fish such as salmon, herring and mackerel may also reduce the risk of developing cancer of the prostate. So choosing fish as an alternative to red or processed meat once a week does benefit us nutritionally
and makes up an essential part of a balanced diet.
Which foods to avoid? Processed meats such as bacon, ham, sausages and salami along with beef, pork, and lamb According to research, eating too much red and processed meat can increase our risk of developing cancer. This risk is particularly associated with bowel cancer but also stomach and pancreatic cancer too. Both red and processed meats contain a red pigment called
haem. It is believed haem can both harm cells in the bowel and trigger cancer by producing N-nitroso compounds. These chemicals in the bowel can also be produced by the way some processed meats are preserved and by cooking at high temperatures (barbecuing or grilling). Paradoxically, red meat does contain nutrients beneficial to health such as protein, iron and vitamin B12. So the advice is to reduce your consumption of red meat rather than cutting it out altogether. Studies have also shown that eating plenty of fibre may counter the negative effects – yet another reason for eating plenty of fruit and veg! Cut down on saturated fat Although research is ongoing, a link has been shown between consuming saturated fat and the
chance of developing breast cancer. It has been suggested that a diet of excess saturated fat can increase hormones that could cause cancer.
Eat less salt The risk of developing stomach cancer is increased if we have too much salt in our diet. Research suggests that salt may make the lining of the stomach more sensitive to harmful chemicals or even damage it. A daily allowance of 6g is recommended so avoid putting it on your meals and aim to use less in your cooking. Try adding herbs or spices to flavour your food instead. Why Temporary Vision Loss Is Worth a Trip to the Doctor D

Zachary Levine gives us the account of a 78-year-old woman who arrived at hospital after experiencing a brief period of vision loss — and was diagnosed with having a ministroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Here, how early medical intervention prevented a catastrophe. The Case A 78-year-old woman was gardening when suddenly she could not see out of her left eye. By the time the doctor saw her at a local clinic two hours later, her vision had returned to normal. He sent her to the ER for further assessment. The Symptoms The vision loss lasted 15 minutes and was painless. The patient enjoyed good health and did not smoke.
The Tests The assessment of transient monocular vision loss begins with the details (painful or painless, complete or partial loss of vision, duration) and the person’s general health — older age is associated with some conditions like temporal arteritis, an inflammation of an artery that can cause vision loss, and blood supply problems are more likely in people with risk factors for atherosclerosis, such as smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes. The patient was examined. Her vital signs (heart rate, oxygen saturation and temperature) were all normal, but her blood pressure was high — a cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor. Her eye examination revealed that the back of the eye (retina) appeared to be a bit pale, indicating suboptimal blood supply. The patient’s carotid arteries (large
arteries on both sides of the neck that supply oxygenated blood to the brain) and the heart were also checked. A neurological examination followed, as a blood supply problem can affect the brain and cause other symptoms such as weakness, numbness, unsteady gait and difficulty speaking. All were normal. An electrocardiogram (EKG) was done to test for an irregular heartbeat, which can increase the risk of blood clots. It showed a regular rhythm. Blood tests showed LDL (bad) cholesterol and elevated levels of glucose, showing that the patient had prediabetes, which put her at risk for developing full-blown diabetes. Next, a computerized tomography (CT) scan of the brain and neck arteries was performed, as was an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart). The CT scan showed a normal brain, but significant (more than 90 per cent) stenosis (narrowing) of the left carotid artery. The echocardiogram showed the heart was contracting well and regularly, with no blood clots present. The Diagnosis Transient vision loss — essentially a mini-stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), caused by lack of blood flow to the arteries supplying the eye — was confirmed. It usually results from atherosclerotic disease in the internal carotid artery, which can cause an embolus (an object such as blood clot or fatty deposit that moves in the bloodstream and blocks a small blood vessel) or stenosis (where the blood supply is compromised). Along with the evidence of CVD, it was a warning that the patient was at significant risk of a full-blown stroke, even though she had been feeling fine.

The Outcome The patient received medical attention in time to prevent catastrophe. She underwent a carotid endarterectomy to clean out and open up the carotid artery.
Her blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol are now managed with weight control, physical activity and medication, including a blood-thinning medication to further decrease her risk of
ischemic stroke. She is back to gardening. Dr. Zachary Levine is an emergency physician and associate professor in the McGill University Department of Emergency Medicine.
