T is acknowledged that Mayo have some of the finest and most loyal supporters in Ireland. However, on the eve of the final, in which the Green and Red are hoping to bridge a 65-year gap and finally bring home the coveted Sam Maguire Cup, many thousands of dedicated fans may be disappointed due to the county’s reduced ticket allocation.

The reduced allocation of over 2,000 from 2013, as outlined by county secretary Peter Neary, is partly due to the absence of a minor team in this year’s final. It is also due to an increase in season ticket holders (now standing at 3,700) and, of course, the participation of Dublin in the final.

But Chairde Mhaigheo season ticket holders, who in the past had an option of purchasing an additional ticket for the final, will now be disappointed as this facility had been withdrawn.

What has particularly annoyed some clubs is the “adjustment” in the club allocations. While each senior club will still be allocated 100 tickets (50 stand and 50 terrace), intermediate 80 (40/40) and junior 60 (30/30), unlike in previous years tickets provided for principal officers and county board delegates will now be taken out of the club’s initial allocation.

While they have been assured this will be addressed if the county board receives an additional allocation of 400 it still leaves clubs (especially those with burgeoning membership) hard pressed cater for players and loyal supporters.

All-night raves disturb Castlebar residents

T may seem like a story from another time but residents close to a field in Castlebar, where all-night raves were held last week were shocked to learn that another such event is being organised on social media. This is despite drugs having been found on some of those attending the event.

Gardaí were made aware of the events

by local residents, who complained about the noise levels coming from a private field in the Kilkenny Cross area on the Friday night of last week. The Gardaí subsequently set up checkpoints around the venue and obtained a search warrant to search the venue and vehicles coming to the event. Up to eight people were found to be carrying drugs, believed to be

cannabis and ecstasy, on their way to the rave. No drugs were found inside the venue.

A woman in her 30s from Cork who was arrested for possession of what is believed to be ecstasy appeared before Cork District Court on Thursday on foot of a bench warrant after she was previously charged with possession of drugs in Cork.Up to 200 people attended the Friday night rave with a smaller crowd attending the Saturday night event.

One person who lives in the locality said the music was ‘extremely loud for anyone living in the area, and it continued throughout the night both on Friday and Saturday’. It is understood that the Gardaí did not have the legal power to shut down the raves. However, a file is being prepared for the DPP, and a garda spokesperson said they were confident of bringing a prosecution against the landowner and the organisers for unlicensed dancing.

Despite this, it is understood that the organisers of last week’s rave are already planning to hold another event in Castlebar in a couple of weeks time with invites send by Facebook. Many had travelled from long distances for the last rave, Wexford, Cork and even from France. So many really enjoyed the event and felt the public should not be quick to judge.

The beautiful Lough Corrib and Inchagoill Island was the setting for the launch of the 2017 Mayo International Choral Festival. Last Saturday saw over 50 members of different

Mayo choirs take to the waters of Lough Corrib to sing in the 6th Festival. The atmosphere on the day was one of relaxation, fun, and a sense of adventure.For many, it was the

first time onboard the Corrib Cruises craft – an 80-seater purpose-built cruising boat operating daily from Cong Village.

The day was filled with song and there were representatives from Ballyhaunis Church Choir, Castlebar Gospel Choir, Castlebar Musical Society, Cong Church Choir, CorMhaighEo, Gracenotes, Kiltimagh Choral Society, Mayo Male Voice Choir, Rocks n’Roses Choir, Sligo Male Voice Choir and the Westport Singers. Edward Horkan, Festival Chairman praised and thanked all involved for making the day such a success. The festival director, Declan Durcan, also praised the various businesses who had subsidised the costs of their services on the day to make the trip so affordable - in particular Corrib Cruises, Hilda and Luke Kavanagh Coach Hire and Ryan’s Hotel in Cong.

The festival takes place at the end of May each year and has become in only a very short time one of the most popular Choral Festivals in Ireland and has attracted

choirs from Canada, England, Finland, Germany Norway, Portugal, USA and Wales. The festival has now become a contact point for choirs who are touring outside of the festival dates and has hosted many concerts for International choirs with local choirs. CorMeibion Penybontfawr ,a Male voice choir from Wales, will visit in October, and a concert is currently being organised in Mayo for Saturday 22nd October. The festival has become a very big part of the tourism sector in Mayo realising, after costs, one million euro to the Mayo economy over the last 5 years and a staggering 7,540 bed nights. It is supported by Mayo County Council and Fáilte Ireland.

Next year’s festival runs from 24th to 28th of May 2017.

Sligo’s GSK employees go through gears for charity

A

S part of the GSK Wheelie Good Cause annual charity cycle in Cork this weekend (10th December), 10 employees from their Sligo operation (GSK) will literally go that extra mile when they embark on an extra challenge to raise money for Make-A-Wish-Ireland.

They will cycle 500 kilometres over three days – from Sligo to Cork – to raise additional funds for the worthy cause.

Celebrating the 5th year of the event, GSK Ireland’s annual charity cycle will take place in Cork on Saturday 10 September - in aid of its employeenominated Charity of the Year, Make-A-Wish Ireland.

Every two years, GSK’s innovative charity partnership programme allows GSK’s 1,800 employees in Ireland to nominate and vote for charities closest to their heart. In addition to the €50,000 that GSK donates, GSK employees also share their time and expertise with MakeA-Wish Ireland through the GSK volunteer programme and the company’s main fundraising event the ‘GSK Wheelie Good Cause’.

Over 100 employees from all four GSK locations nationwide - Cork, Dungarvan, Dublin and Sligo – will participate in either a 50km or 100km cycle through the glorious Cork countryside, with all

fundraising monies going to grant more wishes for sick children across the country and GSK’s local communities. Since 2012, GSK Ireland employees have gone through the gears to raise over €47,000 for Wheelie Good Causes throughout Ireland.

Former Irish Olympian and GSK Dungarvan employee, Robert Power will also be participating in the charity cycle, sharing the expertise which saw him qualify for the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympic Games with his fellow GSK colleagues.

The Sligo contingent are looking forward to the experience.

An additional 10 employees from GSK Sligo will also embark on an extra challenge to raise money for Make-A-Wish Ireland, as they cycle 500k over 3 days from Sligo to Cork to take part in the Wheelie Good Cause.

Katherine hits Lough Key parkrun for Celebrity Operation Transformation Mohill’s Katherine Lynch, one of Ireland’s funniest women, is one of four celebrities to take part in Operation Transformation this year and as part of the programme, she will lead the Lough Key 5km parkrun on September 10.

Lough Key parkrun is a freetimed weekly 5k run/jog/walk, intending runners/walkers can register online, get a barcode, print it out and come along at 9.30am on Saturday mornings.

Following the 5k run participants get an email with

very detailed results of their run/walk .

Up to now the parkrun has been attracting numbers of up to 150 runners/walkers ever Saturday from all over Ireland and also plenty of “parkrun tourists.”

Katherine Lynch has had several television series broadcast on RTÉ Two, with titles like Working Girls, Wonderwomen and Single Ladies.

Lynch also participated as a bainisteoir in the second series of the RTÉ One’s

Celebrity Bainisteoir.

The line-up for Celebrity Operation Transformation includes comedians Katherine Lynch and Karl Spain, solicitor Gerald Kean, face of TV3’s Midday Elaine Crowley, and RTÉ Radio 1 reporter Brenda Donohue.

A main focus will be to motivate the public to register and participate in the nationwide campaign ‘The Million Pound Challenge’.

The show will air on RTÉ One on Wednesday evenings at 9.30pm, where Katherine

Thomas will present three one hour episodes commencing on September 7.

Lough Key parkrun have appointed an ambassador to assist Katherine and also to liaise with the many people who will register with operation transformation and parkrun.

So anyone wishing to follow Katherine on her journey can register on the OT website and then come along to Lough Key at 9.30am on Saturday mornings to complete a regular 5k walk/jog/run.

New Sligo road named after Leitrim man

I

t is a fascinating story. Sligo has a got a name for its new road – and a child’s wish has come true.

Alison Eames (12) granddaughter of Roger Eames took it upon herself to write to each members of Sligo County Council and request that a new road in the town be named after her late grandfather who did so much for the youth of the town.

Roger Eames, was formerly of Larkhill Road, Sligo and most recently of 1 Greenfield Close, Mohill, Co. Leitrim.

He died on 31st March 2015 at Summerville Nursing Home, Strandhill, Co. Sligo. He was formerly of Rossinver, Co. Leitrim and moved to Sligo in 1963 with his

young family.

His granddaughter, Alison Eames who was 12 years old at the time (last year) wrote to each member of Sligo County Council with a request that the Western Distributor Road that runs from Ballydoogan to Strandhill Road in Sligo be named after her grandfather, Roger Eames.

Here are excerpts from the letter she wrote to each Council member in 1915: “Granddad died a few weeks ago. All of my family are sad because they miss him.

But they are happy because they remember him as a kind man who helped lots of people.

“He inspired me, because he always put other people first. He never wanted thanks for the things he did.

“My Dad always tells me about Granddad, He says that for as long as he could remember, Granddad was always training football teams and wanted to give Sligo kids something to do.

“He was the president of St. Mary’s football club when he died. When he was younger he helped get money from the bank to buy a football pitch for the kids to play on.

“Granddad helped set up the Leitrim People’s Association in Sligo. In 1994 he was Leitrim Guardian Personality of the year.

“He helped set up the Community Games in Maugheraboy. Later he was involved with Sligo Community Games and with the national finals in Mosney.

“Not only was he very helpful to the community, he was also a kind Granddad who always had a big smile and a shake hands whenever we would come to visit. I miss him.

“There is a road going through Kevinsfort now and it comes out near St. Mary’s football ground.

“I have a wish, can this road please be called after my Granddad Roger Eames?”

The response from the council members was terrific and two council members, namely Cllr. Marie Casserly and Cllr. Sean MacManus proposed a joint motion at a council meeting in June 2015 recommending the name change of the road to Roger Eames Road. The motion was carried.

The official opening of the road took place last Saturday, 3rd September.

Chicago’s Irish supporting Mary Robinson Centre The potential of the Mary Robinson Centre is gaining momentum worldwide. Chicago’s Irish American community is gearing up to support the development of the project. The prospect of developing the Mary Robinson Centre in Ballina as a world-class centre for research and education on human rights, equality, women’s empowerment and climate, recognising Mary Robinson’s stellar reputation, has captured the imagination of the local Irish American community, who are preparing a series of events in Chicago in September, including a lunch in the Hilton Chicago on September 15th to support fundraising efforts for the Centre in the US. The Irish Fellowship of Chicago, the American Ireland

Funds, the Mayo Association and the Irish American Heritage Centre are among the organisations planning the events. Former President and current UN Special Envoy for El Niño and Climate will speak at the events and will outline how important the Centre will be for Ballina and for Mayo, in particular its vital role in attracting students, researchers and the wider public from around the world to the Ballina Centre.

All of Irish America in Chicago are invited to attend the lunch on September 15th.

In addition to events across the pond, The Mary Robinson Centre’s autumn programme of events begins this month. Following a summer break, the highly successful schools programme re-

sumes this month, with students across Mayo bringing current human rights issues to life in their classrooms.

Culture Night sees The Mary Robinson Centre back at Ballina Arts Centre on September 16th, this time for an interactive workshop with Dr Ann O’Mahony and Jane Dunn. Based on the VOICE exhibition showcased at the recent International Symposium, participants will follow in the footsteps of Chile’s human rights activists, the Arpilleristas, creating their own multimedia collage honouring an inspirational woman in their lives.

Coca-cola company investment a vote of confidence in Mayo

T

he Coca-Cola Company’s announcement last week of an investment of €26m in its Ballina operation has been warmly welcomed.

The announcement was made by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD with Muhtar Kent, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Coca-Cola Company. The capital investment further strengthens the Company’s commitment to Ireland as the Ballina facility becomes the first production site for the company’s innovative Freestyle technology outside of the United States. An additional 25 new jobs will be created in Ballina over the next three years as part of this investment.

The Coca-Cola Freestyle patented technology is a touch screen soda fountain which was first introduced by the company in the U.S. in 2010. The dispenser features more than 165 different Coca-Cola beverage choices from across the company’s full product range, including a choice of lower-calorie and no-calorie options, as well as sports drinks and fruit flavoured drinks.

More than 40,000 Coca-Cola Freestyle machines can already be found across the U.S., and in recent years has undergone extensive market testing with customers in parts of Europe. The investment will facilitate wider expansion of the Freestyle model into key European markets with the demand from 10 countries expected to be met by the production team in Ballina. The team based in Ballina has been instrumental in developing the Coca-Cola Freestyle machines produced specifically for the European market.

Speaking about the investment An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, TD said: “The €26 Million investment announced by CocaCola in their Ballina operations is a significant vote of confidence by the company in Ireland and Mayo itself.”

“Coca-Cola have been an important element of the local economy and significant employer in Mayo since 2000 and across Ireland for over six decades.

Today’s announcement is a further vote of confidence in the Western region by a major multinational company.”

“ . . . Over the past year unemployment has fallen across every region in the country and this Government, through the Regional Action Plan for Jobs, will continue to ensure that the benefits of a rising economy are felt in every region of Ireland. Our recovery plan has seen a substantial improvement in the West of Ireland with over 5,000 jobs created since 2011 in Enterprise Ireland and IDA supported companies.”

Muhtar Kent, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for The Coca-Cola Company, said: “I am delighted to be in Ballina today to make this important announcement about further investments in our Irish operations.

Leitrim jobs announcement catalyst for much more – Mac Sharry Huge potential of North West region must be capitalised The huge potential of North West region must be capitalised, according to Fianna Fáil TD for Sligo-Leitrim Marc Mac Sharry. The deputy was was welcoming the €10m investment by VistaMed in its Carrick-on-Shannon campus and says the announcement is

testament to the talent and skills of the workforce in the North West region. More than 150 new jobs are being created by the medical devices company, which already employs over 300 people at two sites in Leitrim.

Deputy Mac Sharry commented, “Today’s jobs and investment announcement brings a much needed

boost to Leitrim, and the North West in general, and will breathe life back into a community which has suffered a number of high profile job losses in recent years.

“VistaMed’s decision to expand its operation in Leitrim is a ringing endorsement of the quality of the workforce in the region and sends a clear signal to other potential investors that there is a rich talent pool in the North West which should be capitalised on.

“This announcement should be seen as a turning point and I am calling on the Jobs Minister Mary Mitchell O’Connor to develop a new strategic approach to attract more investment to the North West region. For too long counties like Leitrim, Sligo, Donegal and Cavan have been left behind. The Fine Gael-Labour Government concentrated its efforts on creating jobs in Dublin and the commuter counties and neglected the regions.

This needs to change.

New Car Sales soar ahead in North West

M

IRRORING a pattern throughout the country, sales of new cars continue to increase in the north west. While nationally, the official 162 car registrations show an increase of 14% (7,313) on August last year (6,400), according to the Society of the Irish Motor Industry, the upward movement in this region is even greater with Roscommon leading the country in percentage terms with an increase of 31.78% on last year,

though the county still has just 0.89% of the national total.

Mayo, showing an increase of 17.78% (2676 units), compared with 2272 last year), now has 1.96% of national sales. Sligo’s sales figures increased by 18.6% (to 1,256), giving the county 0.91% of national sales. A smaller increase of 12.59% was recorded in Leitrim.

Within the business sector commercial vehicles are continuing to

perform well with Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) up 11% (1,815 ) on the same month last year (1,642) and currently, year to date, are up 22% (24,545) overall. While Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) registrations, are also up 49% for the month of August (251) 2016 when compared to August last year (169), with registrations up 41% year to date.

Commenting on the figurers SIMI Director General Alan Nolan said “The Motor Industry has been working hard to deliver the continuing level of growth in what has been a noticeably more difficult market since June. As we move toward the end of 3rd quarter of the year the Industry remains focused on business still to be done, with strong offers still available for consumers.

In contrast with the era before the two-period registration system was introduced, when sales were all but finished in the first quarter, the interest in new vehicle sales now tends to carry to the end of the third quarter, but obviously at a lower rate.

We believe the Industry is still on course to deliver close to 150,000 new car sales by the end of the year, indeed new car sales have already generated €1.2 Billion for the Exchequer in VRT and VAT receipts.

Our Industry currently employs over 42,000 people nationwide and it is crucial that the provisions in the forthcoming Budget for 2017 support rather than undermine the State’s tax revenues and employment across the sector. It is important that Budget 2017 contains measures that improve the position of both consumers and businesses. The potential for postBrexit Sterling exchange rates to drain business away from the Irish domestic economy was highlighted by the increase of 76% in the number of Imported Used Cars in July, so clearly the last thing we need at this stage is any further damaging tax increase in the forthcoming.”

Sligo IT appoints new President

I

nstitute of Technology, Sligo is pleased to confirm the appointment of Dr Brendan McCormack as President.

The appointment was approved by the Institute’s Governing Body on Wednesday.

Dr Mc Cormack (58) succeeds Professor Vincent Cunnane who stood down earlier this year to take up a similar role with Limerick

Institute of Technology.

“It is a singular honour for me to become the new President of IT Sligo,” said Dr McCormack.

“This Institute has been a huge part of my life. It can be justifiably proud of the role it plays in the region and I believe it is the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the Institute of Technology sector.

“I look forward to

working with the students, staff and stakeholders of IT Sligo in continuing to build on its excellent educational history, regional development focus, and to help it realise its Technological University ambition.” Dr McCormack is a native of Athlone and has lived in County Sligo with his wife Mary, and children Oliver, Gabriella, Deirdre, and Don for the last 18 years.

He brings a vast array of experience from both the private and public sectors in the fields of engineering, design and research to the role. He holds a PhD in Medical Device Design, and has worked in the Higher Education sector for the past 27 years.

He has been a staff member of IT Sligo since 1998 and has held key senior roles during that time, including Head of School of Engineering (2001-2006) and Head of Academic Affairs (Registrar, 2006-2014).

More recently, he has been Project Manager of

the Connacht-Ulster Alliance (CUA), a strategic partnership involving IT Sligo, Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, and Letterkenny IT, which is seeking re-designation as a Technological University for the region. Welcoming the new appointment on behalf of the Governing Body of IT Sligo, Board member Conor Murphy, said: “Brendan is a passionate advocate of access to higher education for all, and has made major contributions in the provision of up-skilling training for the Irish workforce.

“He considers higher education to be a key player in developing the social, cultural and economic fabric of the North-West of Ireland, particularly in supporting new indigenous business development.”

The Institute’s Registrar, Colin McLean, takes up the role of Interim President from September 1st to enable Dr McCormack complete his transition into the new post.

Four out of five parents in Ireland fear ‘stranger danger’ when their child plays outside

ompass Club by Coillte is a new afterschool initiative to get kids back into nature by providing a fun foundation in outdoor skills and activities. Hours in front of a screen, less time playing outdoor and a society faced with the concern of ‘stranger danger’ has led to a generation of children who simply don’t have the freedom to explore the natural world around them, according to new research from Compass Club by Coillte which is a new afterschool outdoor programme in Irish forests nationwide designed to help children to grow a love for the outdoors , through fun experiences and activities that get them out and about with their friends and develop essential life skills that stick with them for life.

Half of children in Ireland (51%) only spend 30 minutes or less playing outdoors after school and parents overwhelmingly admit (64%) that this is far less than when they were children.

This worrying trend is leading to what has been termed ‘nature deficit disorder’ amongst a generation of children.

Children are missing out on life forming nature experiences with the research showing that almost half (45%) have never climbed a tree, the same portion (48%) have never gone walking in a forest with friends, almost one in three (62%) have never pitched a tent, more than two thirds (69%) have never toasted marshmallows over a fire, almost three quarters (74%) have never sat around a camp fire and a staggering eight in 10 (84%) have never used a compass.

Compass Club, from Ireland’s forest management organisation Coillte, have developed a unique new afterschool programme of outdoor skills for 6 to 12 year olds taking place in 47 locations nationwide from 19th September 2016.

mainly and are designed to encourage exploration and discovery in a supervised environment with small group sizes creating a greater sense of freedom.

The child-led courses are built on the principles of strength based education and the syllabus is designed to develop problem-solving, critical thinking, inquiry and investigation, spatial awareness and sensory perception – all with a healthy dose of fun. For kids, they get to pick up school curriculum skills in an environment that couldn’t be any different from a classroom.

Their awesome forest adventures include everything from navigation, knot skills, rope swings, scavenger hunts, games, building shelters, learning about habitats and toasting marshmallows.

Key findings from the new research from Compass Club by Coillte show: Half of children (51%) spend 30 minutes or less playing outside after school 3 in 4 adults (75%) believe that children spend more time online with their virtual friends than they do playing outdoors with other children Nine in 10 adults (89%) believe that children today spend more time looking at screens than any other activity People believe that children today are less able to socialise and make new friends in their neighbourhoods than when they themselves were a child.

More than four in five parents (81%) are concerned about strangers approaching their children when they play outdoors. Only 7% of those asked had no concerns about letting their kids play outdoors.

Parents’ surveyed believe that playing outdoors as children contributed to their development and kept them physically fit (86%), helped them to socialise (74%) and fuelled their imagination and creative spirit

(72%).

She explains: “This research demonstrates that our changing lifestyles are depriving children in Ireland of the many positives which we all experienced playing outdoors when we were growing up. Extensive international research concludes that outdoor learning contributes significantly to raising standards in education and improving children’s personal, social and emotional development. The underlying strengths based philosophy that Compass Clubs are built around, combined with the well documented benefits of outdoor education, make these afterschool courses a very unique offering for parents and children.” Shane Stafford, General Manager of Compass Club by Coillte, said: “We are very proud to officially launch Compass Club by Coillte today.

Our courses started a few months ago and so far we have given over 3,400 children awesome adventures in Ireland’s beautiful woodlands and taught them skills that will stand to them for life. Parents have praised the courses, and our adult leaders, for helping to build their children’s confidence. Kids have simply had a ball learning in the outdoors and going home to build shelters in their back gardens.”

T

his month I begin a new feature dealing with health matters in and around the mouth.

I had been wondering what aspect of dentistry to cover first and was then inspired by one of my patients. The lady in question came to see me recently, having not been to the dentist for some years.

When I went to the waiting room to meet her I could see that she was literally shaking, and as she came into the surgery she began to cry.

As I talked to her it very quickly became obvious that the cause of her distress was fear, plain and simple. She was not in any pain and was booked in for an initial checkup and assessment, so was not having any treatment that day, but she was utterly petrified simply to be in a dental surgery.

During my career I have seen many, many people coming through the door in precisely this state of mind. In every case the person will refer back to a previous bad experience with a dentist.

Frequently, but not always, this will have occurred as a child. The specifics of the bad experience often relates to treatment being carried out without anaesthetic working properly. Sometimes it is in relation to a dentist being rude or unpleasant, or sometimes it is after a traumatic procedure such as a difficult tooth extraction Whatever the cause, the person winds up fearful and expecting all visits to the

dentist to be bad. As a result they avoid going to the dentist for regular checks and treatment. Additionally, they will tend to ignore small problems in the mouth, which then inevitably become bigger ones. Human nature being as it is, people in this situation try to avoid thinking about the dentist altogether.

They often also begin to avoid thinking about their teeth, leading to poor brushing, which simply makes the situation worse.

The result is often a neglected mouth with decayed teeth, spaces, gum disease and an unattractive smile. To further complicate things, as teeth deteriorate people often begin to feel ashamed. This shame over the appearance of their teeth, and over the fact that they have allowed this to happen, can dramatically reduce the persons self-confidence.

I have seen this scenario many times and it is utterly heartbreaking. So how to break the cycle? Well, the first step is to work up the courage to go along and speak to a dentist. Do that, and just that. Talk to us, tell us your fears, your past experiences. A good dentist will be happy to listen, to understand and to help you find a way around the problems and back to a healthy mouth again. The physical fact of having dental treatment is never going to be a pleasant experience, but it can be a civilised one.

So, to those people out there who are terrified at the thought of going to the dentist a heartfelt plea from me; take some courage, go along and talk to a sympathetic dentist. We really are here to help. It won't be an easy step for you to take, but it may well transform your life.

IFA calls for prompt delivery of €500m EU aid package A

€500m EU aid package for farmers, announced by the European Commission, must be delivered promptly, according to the Irish Farmers’ Asociation (IFA).

IFA National Dairy Committee chairman, Sean O’Leary, said Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed and his officials, must ensure that farmers can avail from both the incentivised milk production reduction scheme and the other aid scheme.

He said that just because milk prices have started to improve, it does not change the fact that they remain well below production costs. Cashflow shortages remain the top problem for dairy farmers, and Minister Creed must deliver urgently on the state-backed, lowcost cashflow loans proposed by IFA, he added.

“The €150m fund to incentivise production reduction by EU dairy farmers to the tune of 14.4c/l (14c/kg) over the last quarter of the year is a first-come-firstserved, EU-wide scheme. The Minister and his officials must therefore ensure that application forms are made available urgently before the first application deadline of September 20. Farmers who are considering participating in the scheme should bear in mind that the aid will likely be paid as late as March 2017 for those who have verifiably reduced production in the last quarter of 2016, and that there may not be any funding left for the following three threemonth periods if the scheme is fully subscribed in the first period.

They will need to weigh up the value of higher constituents in late lactation milk versus this delayed payment,” Mr O’Leary said.

“The second part of the EU aid package, Ireland’s share of which amounts to €11.1m, cannot be paid unconditionally as was done last year. Minister Creed can, and must, match the EU funds and utilise the potential €22.2m to provide farmers with low-cost, short term loans, or otherwise help them with their cashflow difficulties,” he said.

“Despite the market recovery and the start of milk price increases this month, farmers continue to be paid below the cost of production. The Minister must not lose sight of the need to allow farmers in all sectors to convert their accumulated merchant credit, utility, superlevy and other bills into low cost, short term loans they will start repaying in a year or more when incomes recover. This type of loan package, based on the €15,000 State aid concession agreed in Brussels earlier this year, has been proposed by IFA earlier this summer, and while the response from the Minister has been positive, the time for delivery is now,” he concluded.

Rural female entrepreneurs avail of successful start-up programme M

inister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed has welcomed the launch of the second year of Accelerating the Creation Of Rural Nascent Start-ups (ACORNS), a six-month part-time development programme for aspiring rural female entrepreneurs.

Minister Creed said: “I am pleased to announce the second year of this very effective programme. Job creation is a priority for this Government and an important focus of Food Wise 2025. The success of last year’s programme shows what a difference mentoring and peer learning can make to rural women in developing their new business ideas.”

Fully funded under the Department’s Commission for the Economic Development of Rural Areas (CEDRA) Rural Development and Innovation Fund, the initiative is focused on developing the potential of female entrepreneurs living in rural Ireland who have recently started a business or who have taken concrete steps towards setting up a business.

There is no charge for successful applicants.

A core element of the ACORNS initiative is the involvement of ‘lead entrepreneurs’, who have already started and successfully grown businesses in rural Ireland. These businesswomen, on a voluntary basis, facilitate the interactive roundtable sessions, act as role models and mentor the successful

applicants. These lead entrepreneurs include: Alison Ritchie, Polar Ice, Laois; Anne Cusack, Critical Healthcare, Westmeath; Anne Reilly, Paycheck Plus, Louth; Caroline McEnery, The HR Suite, Kerry; Deirdre McGlone, Harvey’s Point, Donegal; Mary B Walsh, Ire Wel Pallets, Wexford; and Triona MacGiolla Rí, Aró Digital Strategy, Galway.

Last year, 44 entrepreneurs completed the pilot ACORNS programme, with all participants reporting that participation in ACORNS was of value to their business.

Eight businesses began trading for the first time during the pilot; of the 35 trading, 86% increased their combined sales by 43%; 10 participants made export sales, including five for the first time; and participants increased their total number of employees by 13%.

The pilot participants expect to achieve significant further growth in sales, employment and in the number of exporters by the end of 2016. They are being offered the opportunity of further ACORNS support to assist them to achieve their ambitious targets.

Deadline for application for this year’s ACORNS programme is Thursday 22 September 2016.

Beef cartels need to be challenged not strengthened - Carthy Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy, responding to this week’s publication of a report commissioned by the IFA on the proposed ABP-Slaney merger, has said that the ‘unfair market practices’ within the beef processing sector need to be challenged rather than strengthened. The proposed merger would be a step in the wrong direction, he said.

“This report confirms the concerns that I have repeatedly raised in both the European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee and with the Commission directly - that there is a clear unfair market dominance in the beef processing sector in Ireland preventing fair competition and fair pricing,” said Mr Carthy.

“It is by no means a far jump to conclude that the proposed merger would result in ABP-Slaney increasing significantly on their combined grip of the beef and sheep processing sectors beyond 26 per cent and 40 per cent. This merger would effectively isolate any remaining competitors and create

a situation where it would be impossible for new meat processing businesses to enter the market.”

“In an area already suffering from extremely weak competition, farmers stand to lose our massively from this proposed merger. Farmers have been expressing their concerns that the low prices they receive for their cattle is due to a de facto cartel being in operation. It is clear to them that farm gate prices will decline further if the dominant players are allowed to tighten their grasp. With such low prices at the primary end of the beef and sheep supply chains, Irish farmers are at risk of being cheated out of what is owed to them for premium products on export markets,” he continued.

He also said that the merger would result in an unworkable concentration of the market in Ireland, allowing only a few key players to dictate the terms of processing and export by Irish farmers.

The next month provides the last opportunity to make any changes to housing before winter, according to CAFRE Dairying Development Adviser Trevor Alcorn.

Now is the time to assess all your farm buildings with a view to improving animal health/comfort, management and labour efficiency, says Alcorn who is based in the north Tyrone area.

September can be a busy month as farmers prepare for the winter period, while also finishing off jobs such as spreading lime and fertiliser if conditions allow, according to Alcorn.

Alcorn advises farmers to analyse silage in preparation for planning the winter diet, while alsocalculating how much silage you have and how much you need.

It is important to assess the body condition of young stock, especially maiden heifers, to ensure they are in the right shape for servicing, Alcorn says, while also keeping in mind any vaccinations, for example BVD due well in advance of the breeding season.

If ground conditions allow, autumn is the ideal time to apply lime, with a pH of 6.3 the ideal result to get the best out of fertiliser next year, he says.

If possible Alcorn advises farmers to carry out any final reseeding as early in the month as possible to let new swards establish before winter, while also taking the opportunity to carry out a some dock and weed control where necessary.

The last day for sowing chemical nitrogen (N) and phosphorus fertiliser on grassland is September 15, under the Nitrates Action Programme 2015-2018 and Phosphorus Regulations, Alcorn says.

Until then, the Dairying Development Adviser advises to grow extra grass by applying 35-50kg of Nitrogen per hectare after each field has been grazed.

Things to consider: Ventilation for both young and adult stock – can this be improved to help air circulation?

Applying lime Cubicles and mats/mattresses – replace/repair any broken/ loose cubicles or worn mattresses; is there a brisket pipe or board fitted?

Slippery floors/slats – groove/replace worn concrete to help avoid cows falling down.

Feed space/drinkers – is there sufficient feeding/ drinking space for cows? Can this be improved?

Beef cartels need to be challenged not strengthened - Carthy Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy, responding to this week’s publication of a report commissioned by the IFA on the proposed ABP-Slaney merger, has said that the ‘unfair market practices’ within the beef processing sector need to be challenged rather than strengthened. The proposed merger would be a step in the wrong direction, he said.

“This report confirms the concerns that I have repeatedly raised in both the European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee and with the Commission directly - that there is a clear unfair market dominance in the beef processing sector in Ireland preventing fair competition and fair pricing,” said Mr Carthy.

“It is by no means a far jump to conclude that the proposed merger would result in ABP-Slaney increasing significantly on their combined grip of the beef and sheep processing sectors beyond 26 per cent and 40 per cent. This merger would effectively isolate any remaining competitors and create

a situation where it would be impossible for new meat processing businesses to enter the market.”

“In an area already suffering from extremely weak competition, farmers stand to lose our massively from this proposed merger. Farmers have been expressing their concerns that the low prices they receive for their cattle is due to a de facto cartel being in operation. It is clear to them that farm gate prices will decline further if the dominant players are allowed to tighten their grasp. With such low prices at the primary end of the beef and sheep supply chains, Irish farmers are at risk of being cheated out of what is owed to them for premium products on export markets,” he continued.

He also said that the merger would result in an unworkable concentration of the market in Ireland, allowing only a few key players to dictate the terms of processing and export by Irish farmers.

The next month provides the last opportunity to make any changes to housing before winter, according to CAFRE Dairying Development Adviser Trevor Alcorn.

Now is the time to assess all your farm buildings with a view to improving animal health/comfort, management and labour efficiency, says Alcorn who is based in the north Tyrone area.

September can be a busy month as farmers prepare for the winter period, while also finishing off jobs such as spreading lime and fertiliser if conditions allow, according to Alcorn.

Alcorn advises farmers to analyse silage in preparation for planning the winter diet, while alsocalculating how much silage you have and how much you need.

It is important to assess the body condition of young stock, especially maiden heifers, to ensure they are in the right shape for servicing, Alcorn says, while also keeping in mind any vaccinations, for example BVD due well in advance of the breeding season.

If ground conditions allow, autumn is the ideal time to apply lime, with a pH of 6.3 the ideal result to get the best out of fertiliser next year, he says.

If possible Alcorn advises farmers to carry out any final reseeding as early in the month as possible to let new swards establish before winter, while also taking the opportunity to carry out a some dock and weed control where necessary.

The last day for sowing chemical nitrogen (N) and phosphorus fertiliser on grassland is September 15, under the Nitrates Action Programme 2015-2018 and Phosphorus Regulations, Alcorn says.

Until then, the Dairying Development Adviser advises to grow extra grass by applying 35-50kg of Nitrogen per hectare after each field has been grazed.

Things to consider: Ventilation for both young and adult stock – can this be improved to help air circulation?

Applying lime Cubicles and mats/mattresses – replace/repair any broken/ loose cubicles or worn mattresses; is there a brisket pipe or board fitted?

Slippery floors/slats – groove/replace worn concrete to help avoid cows falling down.

Feed space/drinkers – is there sufficient feeding/ drinking space for cows? Can this be improved?

Child safety initiative launched N ational Ploughing Association managing director Anna May McHugh and FBD’s head of farm and business, Christy Doherty, have launched the ‘FBD: Keeping You Safe’ child safety wristband initiative again for this year’s National Ploughing Championships.

The white wristbands, which will be handed out at all of the event entrances, allow for a contact phone number to be written on the band in case the wearer wanders off amid the crowd.

Mr Doherty said: “As one of the main sponsors of the National Ploughing Championships for over 25 years, we are delighted to continue our sponsorship of the National Ploughing Championship’s child safety initiative. Our aim when launching this last year was to keep all children safe as they attend the event. Farmers - remove the headache of the Year End Tax Return TAX TREATMENT OF CPO A compulsory purchase order or CPO is most commonly served on a land owner for road widening or building purposes. Governments and local authorities must acquire such land in order to facilitate the economy and connectivity of the state.

When notified of a CPO, the farmer/land owner will be entitled to compensation for land acquired under the CPO and also for any damage to other properties such as farm buildings, dwelling house etc. Many CPO’s also come with agreements to pay compensation for personal and farming disturbance, costs and replacements.

From a tax perspective, where a CPO occurs there is deemed to be a willing buyer and a willing seller. Capital Gains Tax (CGT) will apply in the majority of cases although Income Tax can be a feature, most commonly when authorities pay interest on compensation payments not made before the date of entry onto the land.

Tax Consequences of a CPO CGT; The excess of proceeds received for land over the cost attributable to the land is subject to CGT, currently at a rate of 33%.

The value received under a CPO is normally market value at the date of notification of the CPO plus compensation for disturbance,

replacements, severance, injurious affection, goodwill, etc.

CGT also applies to such compensation payments.

Costs which mat reduce the “profit” figure for CGT purposes include the following; Part or all of the original acquisition cost of the land – where only part of the land is CPO’d, only part of the land’s original acquisition cost is deducted so as to match the part of the land being compulsorily acquired.

Costs of enhancements carried out on the land such as reclamation, drainage, building costs, roads etc.

Incidental costs at the time of acquisition e.g. legal fees, outlays, Stamp Duty.

Depending on the date of the disposal of an asset, CGT is due for payment either by 15th December of the year of sale or by 31st January of the following year. However, in terms of a CPO the following is important to note in the context of payment dates; For disposals after 4th February 2010, the date of disposal was treated as the date the compensation was received. This change meant that whilst the CGT rate is set at the earlier of the authority entering the land or the agreement for the compensation, the CGT itself would not be due to be paid until the compensation is actually paid to the landowner.

For example, where the

agreement was reached or the authority entered the land on 30th November 2012 but the compensation was only paid on 30th November 2014 the CGT rate applicable to any gain arising would have been 30% (i.e. the 2012 CGT rate) whereas the CGT payment was not due until 15th December 2014.

Finance Act 2015 has subsequently updated the CGT legislation in the context of CPO’s – this change now means that the deemed date of accrual of the chargeable gain in respect of a disposal of land subject to a CPO is also the date the compensation is received.

If we take the above example again and apply the new Finance Act 2015 rule, the CPO disposal would be subject to a CGT rate of 33% as the rate has increased. The new Finance Act 2015 provision is effective where amounts are received on or after 1st January 2016.

Date 23rd May 2016 Income Tax; Income Tax can apply to funds received via a CPO if classified as follows; Interest income for late payments under the CPO agreement, Specific compensation payments in respect of loss of earnings.

Great care should be taken when reviewing the nature and description of payments received under a CPO. VAT;

In most cases the receipt of compensation is not subject to VAT as it is viewed to be outside the scope of VAT. However, in some cases VAT can unwittily become a feature and so CPO agreements need to be carefully drafted to ensure that VAT does not arise on compensation payments.

Ways to Reduce CGT The following are some of the main exemptions and reliefs which may be available against CGT in the context of the sale of certain assets and CPO transactions; Firstly, the make-up of the CPO payment should be investigated in full to establish what exactly the funds are in respect of – for example is there disturbance money, money in respect of the devaluation of a farm residence, compensation to replace an asset, etc.

Once all payments are analysed the following questions can be considered in order to alleviate, and sometimes eliminate CGT arising; 1. PPR Relief – can this relief apply – if part of the funds received is in respect of a devaluation of a residence on the farm this should be investigated, 2. CGT Retirement Relief – are you over 55 years old and have you owned and farmed the land for at least 10 years? If so CGT retirement relief should be considered. Whilst subject to limits in terms of proceeds, it may

be very efficient in reducing or eliminating tax in some cases, 3. Reinvestment of compensation proceeds – are the proceeds of the CPO going to be reinvested in full on the farm to replace destroyed assets? If so CGT may be relieved in full, 4. Entrepreneur Relief – Was the land owned and farmed for 3 years before the CPO? If so can this relief apply to reduce the CGT rate from 33% to 20%? (not available on development land) 5. CGT Losses – Do you have capital losses unused from a prior asset sale or have you an asset that is of negligible value? If so, such losses may be used to relieve CGT, 6. Forestry land – Is any of the compensation received in respect of the value lost in standing timber and can tax exemption apply?

Conclusion CPOs have been considered in much detail over the past 15 years in Ireland and many updates and changes have occurred in terms of their tax treatment. Given the various reliefs that may be available it is important to detail and analyse the specific proceeds during negotiations with the local authorities. It is now, especially since Finance Act 2015, also vitally important to consider when the monies will be paid as this dictates the CGT rate which will be applied to any taxable gain rising.

Choosing livestock for your smallholding who is unsuited to keeping them, so they may want to question you in turn!

What livestock should you choose for your smallholding?

Alan Beat has many years experience with animals. Here is his advice New entrants to smallholding often ask ‘which breed of hens/ducks/sheep/pigs/cattle should we buy?’ Unfortunately, there is no simple answer. It depends on many different factors, not least of which is personal preference. However, I suggest that some commonsense principles can be applied to all types of livestock: • Buy healthy stock from a reliable small-scale source; • Keep them as naturally as possible; • Rotate them regularly to fresh ground; • Avoid overstocking; • Feed and house them properly; • Learn their normal behaviour through regular observation.

Do these simple things and you should have very few problems.

This article examines the first of these principles in more detail.

Preparation Please, please don’t even think about buying your first livestock until you have made adequate preparations. Ensure that field boundaries are stockproof; that sufficient grazing or fodder is available; that appropriate housing and handling facilities are in place and that you have a fair grasp of how to look after them.

Don’t fall into the trap of buying on impulse at a show or sale and think that you can rig something up with baler twine and old pallets ‘just for the time being’ when you get home. Such temporary arrangements are never satisfactory and risk becoming rather more permanent than intended! It’s far better to plan and prepare in advance.

Personal preference There are many different reasons for keeping livestock, but perhaps the most important is

that you take pleasure in doing so.

You’ll be spending a part of every single day in their company, and if that becomes a chore rather than a pleasure, you are not going to succeed with them - it’s as simple as that. So try to acquire some hands-on experience to inform your choice.

Consider enrolling for a short training course covering the livestock that interest you, or offers a general overview to help you focus.Visit established smallholders to learn from their experience, and offer to help with routine tasks that enable contact with the type of stock that interest you.

Handling large livestock can be daunting and may not suit you personally. Keeping geese may seem attractive, but will you cope with an aggressive gander? Milking goats may appeal, but have you ever tried - and can you stand the smell of a billy?

It’s much better to explore such things before you buy, rather than afterwards. A good route to practical experience is through WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms), which enables you to work on smallholdings and farms in exchange for board and lodging; visit www.wwoof.org Another option is to initially let out your grazing to a local smallholder or farmer with the type of stock that interests you.

Useful knowledge and confidence is acquired through regular observation and from conversation with their owner. If you permit them to lamb, calve or kid in your outbuildings, you’ll experience normal and problem birthing as well. This is how Rosie and I learned about sheep management before starting our own flock.

Spend time on the source farm of your potential livestock to gain familiarity with them and ask questions of the vendor. Most breeders are enthusiastic about their animals and it’s not in their interest to sell stock to someone

Pedigree Beginners are often advised to buy quality pedigree stock from a reputable prize-winning breeder.

Such breeders play a vital role in maintaining and developing the wide range of livestock breeds that we enjoy today. The rare breeds, in particular, are often suited to a smallholding life and are especially deserving of our support.

However, I strongly suggest that pedigree livestock are not the ideal first purchase for the raw novice.Pedigree strains have been selectively bred over many generations for certain characteristics. The promotion of specific attributes usually comes at the expense of others, and impacts on general qualities such as hardiness, prolificacy and longevity.

As breeds diverge further from the natural form, there is an associated increase in dependence on human care and intervention to maintain health and well-being.

To give a simple example, primitive sheep shed their fleece naturally each spring, whereas the more developed breeds require shearing. To establish the reputation of his or her pedigree stock, the breeder needs to show them and to win prizes; but showing promotes physique and visual appeal over utility attributes, so that prize-winning stock may lack the practical characteristics that most interest the smallholder. To win consistently around the shows against stiff competition requires considerable effort and commitment alongside expert stockmanship.

All this indicates that trying to keep and breed pedigree stock is not for the fainthearted; nor, I suggest, is it for the novice.

Instead of starting at the top end of the scale, I think the novice is better advised to first gain practical experience with crossbred or commercial stock that are cheaper, hardier and more widely available. When two pure breeds are crossed, the resulting progeny grow faster to a larger ultimate size than either parent; they are also usually healthier, hardier and more prolific breeders. These characteristics are collectively known as ‘hybrid vigour’.

Commercial farming takes advantage of this in various ways, for example, using crossbred ewes to combine the prolificacy of one breed with the heavier lamb carcase of another.

Commercial strains often arise, not from pedigree stock, but from animals with the general characteristics of a breed.

Such livestock may be far removed from any traceable pedigree, but, nevertheless, exhibit the practical attributes of the breed that

smallholders value. Both crossbred and commercial stock will exhibit a wider variance than pedigree animals, but uniformity may not necessarily be desirable for the smallholder, in fact, diversity may be a distinct advantage. Both these types of livestock are easier to source and cheaper to buy than pedigree stock. The progression to pedigree stock, if that is the longterm aim, can follow as experience grows.

SOURCING STOCK An important consideration to the smallholder is docility. For example, sheep from the uplands may be as wild as the hills they graze, unused to confinement by fencing and unworkable except with a well-trained dog. Most commercial sheep are also worked with dogs and hence fear humans by association. However, I suggest that a sheep flock worked without dogs, but instead trained to trust humans and follow a food bucket, is far easier for a novice to manage; so buying your starter flock of tame, bucket-trained sheep from a small scale breeder provides a sensible foundation on which to build.

This principle applies across the spectrum; all livestock that are handled regularly, and are relaxed in close human company, are quieter and more easily managed.

To give an extreme example, I once bought some weaners (young pigs) from a semi-feral herd that roamed a large acreage without any close human contact. The owner rigged up a temporary catching pen of wire mesh panels into which the piglets were lured by food and then trapped.

When he approached the pen, the pigs went berserk and ricocheted around at high speed while attempting to jump straight through the mesh sides - they were terrified. Somehow, we manhandled five squirming piglets into my trailer, although one jumped out again over our shoulders and sprinted away, never to be seen again! Back at our

smallholding, all I glimpsed of these pigs for the first fortnight was their backsides as they ran to hide in their house whenever approached.

With patience and a regular feeding routine, they did eventually learn to tolerate my presence, but never allowed themselves to be touched and so remained difficult to move or handle.

Those pigs were completely unsuitable for a novice to buy. In contrast, weaners from a wellmanaged smallholding, are normally docile and humanfriendly right from the start, making their handling and management so much easier.

So, enquire locally for smallholdings with livestock for sale. Check advertisements in local agricultural merchants and newspapers, and national magazines like CS. I recommend visiting the source farm or smallholding before making the decision to purchase.

Never mind if you are a novice common sense is your guide. Ask to see the breeding stock as well as their offspring and look at the conditions in which they are kept.

Animals that are healthy and thriving will be clean, brighteyed, alert, active and inquisitive, with a shine to their coat - though if pigs have full bellies, they may be contentedly sleeping! Look for a good level of rapport between the vendor and his livestock. Ask plenty of questions; a good breeder will be happy to answer.

If not, look elsewhere.

Finally, beware of buying at a commercial market. It is so easy to make a bad mistake when you lack experience and, obviously, you can’t inspect the source farm either.

If you really must follow that route, take along someone knowledgeable to advise you, and learn from them.

Kettles Heat the amount of water you really need and if you're using an electric kettle, make

sure you cover the elements. More modern kettles have no visible element so you use less water, you could also try to fill a cup and use it as a guide to fill the kettle, so that you boil the right amount of water.

Curtains At night, pull the curtains to stop heat being lost through the windows.

Take care not to drape curtains over radiators as this will funnel heat straight out of the windows.

Heating Turning the thermostat down by just 1°C can cut as much as 10% off your heating bills.

You can also save on running costs by heating your home for an hour less each day.

Television, Hi-Fi and Computers Switch off your TV, video and Hi-Fi at the set.

Standby can use as much as 10%-60%of the electricity that would be used by the device if it was switched on. Also don't forget to turn your Computer monitor off, as it too wastes electricity if left on.

he health benefits of oily fish have been widely reported including reduced risk for heart disease, depression and certain kinds of cancers. Eating fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids has also long been thought to be good for maintaining eye health.

Now new research from Johns Hopkins University backs up previous studies showing that fatty fish-eaters tend to have lower rates of advanced agerelated macular degeneration (AMD) — a condition where vision becomes increasingly blurry and distorted due to damage to part of retina. This can impair basic daily activities such as reading, driving or even recognizing faces.

While there is no cure for AMD, there are some treatments and lifestyle changes that can help to prevent serious vision loss.

The study, published in the journal Ophthalmology, indicates

that omega-3 fatty acids — found in oily fish such as salmon, albacore tuna and mackerel — may affect the development or progression of AMD. Researchers looked at data from 2,520 adults aged 65 to 84 who underwent eye exams and completed detailed dietary questionnaires. And while they found no clear relationship between participants’ reported fish intake and the risk of AMD, there was a link between higher intake of omega-3-rich fish and the odds of having advanced AMD, the most serious stage of the condition.

In fact, participants who ate one or more servings of such fish on a weekly basis were 60 per cent less likely to have advanced AMD than those who averaged less than a serving per week. However, the relationship between participant’s fish intake and the

risk of AMD — as opposed to advanced AMD — was less clear.

The study took into account known risk factors such as gender, race and smoking habits, which have been previously connected with AMD. (Women face a greater risk of AMD than men, whites are at greater risk than African Americans and smokers face a higher risk than non-smokers.)

“While the current research indicates that a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the risk of late AMD in some patients, more research is still necessary,” study leader Bonnielin K. Swenor from Johns Hopkins University told Reuters.

The fact that the study was “cross-sectional” — meaning it analyzed participants at one point in time rather than following them over time – means that its difficult to know for sure if the participants’ reported diet habits preceded the development of the eye disease.

Foods for healthy eyes In addition to fatty fish, there is growing evidence that fresh fruits and dark green, leafy vegetables — foods rich in vitamins C and E, selenium, and carotenoids (including beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin) — may delay or reduce the severity of AMD To reap the most health benefits, select the freshest, most colourful veggies and fruits you can find — think red, dark green, orange or yellow. Some top foods for your peepers include carrots, corn, kiwi, pumpkin, yellow squash, red grapes, tomatoes,

spinach, kale, collard greens and green peas.

Nuts are another source of omega3 fatty acids — and they also contain copper, which it thought to play a role in preventing agerelated eye diseases.

Foods to avoid A high-fat, high-cholesterol diet is not only bad for your heart, but it can lead to fatty plaque deposits in the macular vessels — which can hamper blood flow and increase the risk of AMD. Similar to guidelines for cardiovascular health, experts recommend maintaining a diet low in fat to keep your eyes healthy. Research has also shown that consuming red meat 10 times a week or more puts you at a 47 per cent higher risk for macular degeneration.

Vitamins and supplements A high-dose formulation of antioxidants and zinc can significantly reduce the risk of advanced AMD and its associated vision loss, according to The National Eye Institute’s AgeRelated Eye Disease Study (AREDS). This is often recommended for people with intermediate AMD in one or both eyes.Because there can be harmful side

Other preventative measures Experts also recommend making other healthy lifestyle choices to help prevent AMD: • Smoking. If you smoke, quit.

Studies have shown that people who smoke may be 3-4 times more likely to have AMD. • Exercise. Not only can physical activity reduce risk for AMD, but it may also slow progression of the disease.

• Watch your numbers. This includes controlling your weight, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

• Adequate protection. Protect your eyes and be sure to wear sunglasses, especially in strong sunlight.

He recently played to a full house in the Model Niland, Sligo as support for Rackhouse Pilfer’s album launch and played select gigs on their nationwide tour.

Dean is now launching his debut album "The Calling", recorded at Edenvella Studios, mixed and mastered by the renowned UK Producer/Engineer Ian Caple, who has worked with such artists as Kate Bush, Ryan Adams & Tricky.

His first single, "Gimme a Chance”, demonstrates his passionate and personal song-writing skills and unique guitar style. The video for this single was directed by Sid Rainey, and features the incredible performance of renowned comedian and actor Joe Rooney.
