T is acknowledged that Mayo have some of the finest and most loyal supporters in Ireland. However, on the eve of the final, in which the Green and Red are hoping to bridge a 65-year gap and finally bring home the coveted Sam Maguire Cup, many thousands of dedicated fans may be disappointed due to the county’s reduced ticket allocation. The reduced allocation of over 2,000 from 2013, as outlined by county secretary Peter Neary, is partly due to the absence of a minor team in this year’s final. It is also due to an increase in season ticket holders (now standing at 3,700) and, of course, the participation of Dublin in the final. But Chairde Mhaigheo season ticket holders, who in the past had an option of purchasing an additional ticket for the final, will now be disappointed as this facility had been withdrawn. What has particularly annoyed some clubs is the “adjustment” in the club allocations. While each senior club will still be allocated 100 tickets (50 stand and 50 terrace), intermediate 80 (40/40) and junior 60 (30/30), unlike in previous years tickets provided for principal officers and county board delegates will now be taken out of the club’s initial allocation. While they have been assured this will be addressed if the county board receives an additional allocation of 400 it still leaves clubs (especially those with burgeoning membership) hard pressed cater for players and loyal supporters.
