HE decision by the Department of Education to limit intake to some Educate Together National Schools (ETNS) is causing concern to parents who have opted for this form of childcentred, multi-denominational primary education for their children. While the Department, in response to some lobbying on the issue, have promised to assess the situation, Educate Together, the patron body for a number of multidenominational schools affected, suggests a new policy has been put in place to ensure divested schools do not adversely affect existing primary schools in the area. Many of the schools which opened under the Government’s process to divest patronage of Catholic schools say they are being forced to turn away large numbers of junior infants because of what they say are new restrictions on their pupil-intake. Instructions directing schools in Castlebar and Tuam, in addition to others in Tramore, New Ross and Trim, to adhere strictly to a half-stream intake of 13 infants for the 2018/19 year, is raising alarm bells and putting some parents who moved to these town specifically because of the presence of the equalitybased ETNS in a quandary. “These schools are now effectively being told to turn away large numbers of families who will not now be able to access the equality-based education they had hoped for their children,” Educate Together said in a statement. In place of religious instruction programmes, which are taught in denominational schools, Educate Together schools teach the Learn Together Ethical Education Curriculum which supports children's moral and spiritual development and teaches children about different belief systems. Second Céide Coast Half Marathon for Ballycastle on October 13th

O

n the back of the phenomenal success of its first year, Ballycastle Athletic Club is delighted to announce that the second Céide Coast Half Marathon and 10k race will take place in Ballycastle on Saturday, October 13 2018. It is expected hundreds will converge on the town. Already gaining a reputation as one of the most scenic and well-organised half

Time for debate on Primary Education policy? Continued from front page Several years ago, the Department of Education embarked on a strategy to reflect the changing reality of how parents wanted their children to be educated and provide a sufficiently diverse range of primary schools to cater for children of all religions and creeds. This ‘patronage divestment strategy’ resulted in a number of these nondenominational schools springing up around the country. For Educate Together’s part it says it agreed to open these schools on the basis of their longterm viability as full stream developing schools. The demand for these schools is also increasing, reflecting Ireland’s increasing desire for diversity. However, there must be a fear, particularly for those in some rural areas, that any restriction on intake will limit these schools’ long-term liability. Similar thoughts may be in the minds of those in Westport who, it seems, may be successful in bringing the third Educate Together National School to Mayo. Perhaps it is time for some debate on the issue and gestures of comfort from the Department to allay the fears of parents who feel the ETNS system will provide the best educational outcomes for their children.

marathon events in Ireland, the organisers last year took the bold step of upgrading their existing annual 10k Coastal Challenge to a half-marathon event, a decision that met with the approval of the many participants who travelled from all around Ireland and overseas to take on the spectacular route. Race organiser Michael Kelly said: “We’re really excited to be once again hosting the Céide Coast Half Marathon. It’s a great event for Ballycastle and we are particularly delighted that in 2017 the event attracted people from Cork to California to North Mayo outside the peak tourist season. This in turn benefits local businesses as well as bringing new people into the area. Last year, 93 of our total of 220 participants came from outside Co. Mayo. We hope that this event will in time become one of the must-attend races on the Irish running calendar.” The 2017 event received particular praise for the quality of experience and attention to detail. Thanks to local sponsors, participants received a stylish branded technical top, a generous goodie bag and a full post-race spread of refreshments in Ballycastle Community Hall, where a big screen provided a live feed to the finish line. The 2017 event was even the scene of a marriage proposal as finisher Alan Patrick Dalysuccessfully proposed to his girlfriend Denise Nolan at

the finish line! The star of the show, however, was the route itself. Starting from the Céide Coast visitor centre, participants are treated to the most awe-inspiring vista at the start line, overlooking the famous Ballycastle sea cliffs, and with the route proceeding past Ballycastle Beach and right onto the headland at Downpatrick Head, it truly is a half-marathon experience like no other. Anne-Marie Flynn, manager of Mayo North Promotions Office said: “We are thrilled to be working with Michael and team to promote the Céide Coast Half Marathon again this year. The importance of a high-quality event like this which brings so many people into the area in the off-season cannot be underestimated in terms of its economic and promotional value, and it was heartening last year to hear of so many people planning return visits to explore our area.” The Céide Coast Half Marathon is now seeking support from businesses who might be interested in sponsoring the event. Michael Kelly said:“The event, while is costly to run and we want to maintain the high standard we have set. We’d welcome any support from interested businesses and promise to deliver value for their business in return.” For more information contact Michael Kelly, Ballycastle Athletic Club Tel 087 914 5551, Email ceidecoasthalfmarathon@gmail.com

Historic Cabinet meeting and launch of Project Ireland 2040 at IT Sligo

D

r. Brendan McCormack, President, Institute of Technology, Sligo, has said that the Institute is honoured to be the venue on Friday for a historic meeting of the Cabinet. The Cabinet meeting, the first ever to be held at an IT campus, will begin at 11am and be followed by the launch, by An Taoiseach Mr. Leo Varadkar T.D, of Project Ireland 2040, the National Planning Framework and National Development Plan. The launch will take place in the Knocknarea Arena, IT Sligo, before an

audience of staff and students of IT Sligo, government ministers and guests. Commenting, Dr McCormack said the Cabinet meeting and launch of both the National Planning Framework and the National Development Plan was a vote of confidence in Sligo, the North West Region, its young people and its future. He added: “We believe that the plans to be announced here will make a transformative impact on the economic wellbeing of the north-west region, provide a timely and much needed boost for the

entire region, and assist greatly in its development. A strong commitment by government in this plan will strengthen the confidence of the business community that the region has the capability to support business start-ups and business expansion of SMEs and multi-national companies. “A collective effort by all stakeholders in the region led by the Northern and Western Regional Assembly (NWRA), included the business community led by IBEC NorthWest, the chambers of commerce in Sligo and neighbouring counties, Sligo Economic Forum, the Western Development Commission (WDC) and other stakeholders including Local Authorities and public representatives. The region has made its voice heard. “It is essential that we all work to provide a bright future for the region’s young people. That future includes being able to offer a quality education, as well as the resources and infrastructure that can ensure our young people can build sustainable futures in the North West, and prosper here.” IT Sligo currently has circa 6,000 students from over 20 different countries undertaking programmes across a range of STEM areas in science, engineering and design and in business and the social sciences. The Institute has also won national recognition as Ireland’s leading innovator in the use of technology and flexible online learning, delivering programmes to over 2,500 off-campus and part-time students.

Home owners in Ireland are being advised to be vigilant when it comes to buying home heating fuels this winter The temptation to purchase low cost solid fuels to heat your home can be enticing. However some of these fuels are not as cheap in the long run as they may seem. So consumers need to ensure that they are getting the real thing when purchasing smokeless fuel. In Ireland in recent years, some fuel merchants have been selling highsulphur fuels which are banned in towns and cities with populations of over 15,000 people under the Air Pollution Act. These materials are not only damaging to home heating systems and the environment but also to you and your family’s well-being. It is illegal to sell or to burn ‘smoky coal’ or high sulphur fuels in a smokeless zone and fines of up to €1000 can be applied for a first offence. To counter any such problems, it’s

recommended that consumers purchase smokeless fuels with the Heating Equipment Testing and Approval Scheme (HETAS) logo printed on them. HETAS approved fuels are smokeless fuels which have endured rigorous testing and are therefore safe to burn in your stove or closed fire. Burning an approved fuel gives the homeowner the peace of mind that their fuel is not damaging the appliance or the environment. Minister for Communications, Climate Action and the Environment Denis Naughten has recently moved to resolve this issue and since March 2017, all solid fuels containing over 2 percent sulphur are banned completely from the Irish market. The only way to ensure your fuel is safe is to look for the HETAS logo on the manufacturer’s bag to

ensure that you are getting a genuine product not an imitation. Arigna Fuels have been manufacturing smokeless fuels in Ireland for the last 27 years and have invested in a modern research and development facility, ensuring that all products consistently meet the highest quality assurance standards. Ecobrite is one of Irelands most popular smokeless fuels, manufactured specifically for stoves and closed appliances. Cosyglo is one of Ireland’s original smokeless fuels for open fires which can also be burned in stoves. Both products are HETAS approved and made by Arigna Fuels in Roscommon since 1990, employing a local workforce of 55 employees. For more information see www.arignafuels.ie

tylish pyjama parties, fancy dress parties and bake sales, – maybe not what you’d normally expect to find at Peter Mark’s Sligo salon! For one weekend every year, the Petermarkathon fundraiser means just that and it’s always for an amazing cause.  This week, Peter Mark, Johnston’s Court, celebrated their part in raising a fantastic €65,000 for the Simon Communities and specifically contributed to maintaining the support facilities for homeless individuals in crisis as part of the “Make it Home” campaign. The charity focuses not on managing

but ending homelessness, ensuring that people on the edge maintain and keep their homes. The overall aim of the “Make it Home” campaign is to keep and ensure homes for some of the most vulnerable people in society. Speaking about the initiative, Peter O’Rourke, CEO, Peter Mark said, “What an incredible result! We would like to take this opportunity to express how grateful we are to all our clients and salon teams. This is a fantastic sum of money which we are delighted to give to this organisation and cause. At a time when homelessness issues have never been more prevalent, it is so important to help a national organisation like the

Simon Communities deliver a public service like the “Make it Home” campaign. Thank you so much to everyone who got involved”. Brian Ingarfield of The Simon Communities said: “We cannot express how thankful we are to Peter Mark for supporting the Simon Communities nationwide with this wonderful initiative. We are delighted to accept these much-needed funds raised by all Peter Mark clients and salon teams. All funds raised by Peter Mark will go such a long way in supporting our work around the country, helping people move on from homelessness to safe and secure homes of their own”

Western Counties tops when it comes to broadband need Leitrim is top of the table for broadband intervention with 50.6% and 11287 premises in need under the National Broadband Intervention Plan. Roscommon is ranked third at 47.3%, with 18,457 premises in need, while Mayo comes in 4th with 41.1% and 34,713 premises in need of broadband. Sligo is ranked 9th at 35.6% and 14,227 premises in need under the National Broadband Intervention Plan. Commenting on the results Ibec, the group that represents Irish business, urged the Government to proceed with

the procurement process for the National Broadband Plan (NBP) as soon as possible and to avoid further delay through a review. Ibec CEO Danny McCoy said the delivery of the NBP was a critical infrastructural need for regional development and the time had come for the State to act. “Over the coming weeks, as Government launches the National Planning Framework and the 10-year capital plan, there will be lots of focus on the opportunities for regional development and prosperity. But without

the availability of high speed broadband, this will struggle to become the reality. “You cannot have effective regional development without high speed broadband. Successful rollout of the NBP is essential to bring high speed broadband to the 23% of homes and businesses in the State that are not commercially viable for the private sector to service directly. Without access to world class broadband, our regions cannot be expected to develop and nurture the next generation of indigenous start-ups and SMEs.

Memorial scholarships for Mayo students

Lisa Lavelle and Leah Lynn

T

wo DCU students from Mayo were celebrating in Dublin last week after receiving Memorial Scholarships in The Helix at DCU this week. They were just two of the seventeen students who received awards named in honour of 13 individuals who have played a key role in the life of Dublin City University and in Irish society. Leah Lynn from Ballina, a former student of Gortnor Abbey in Crossmolina and currently a first year student in

science at DCU, was presented with the Aidan P. McDonnell Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was established by telecommunications company Vilicom Ltd. in honour of Aidan McDonnell, from Ballina, who passed away after a tragic accident in June 2006. A DCU electronic engineering graduate and former Vilicom employee, Aidan was a talented engineer and an enthusiastic Gaelic footballer. This scholarship provides for an annual scholarship for a

student from Mayo. Lisa Lavelle from Knocknalower, a former student of Our Lady’s Secondary School in Belmullet and currently a first year student in education at DCU, was presented with the Frank Durkan Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was created in 2008 to remember Mayo native Frank Durkan, who sadly passed away in 2006. Frank moved from Mayo to New York to attend Columbia University and New York University Law School. In his later work as an attorney, writer and political activist, Frank was known as a fierce and clever defender of the underprivileged and a tireless advocate for Ireland and Irish Americans involved in Northern Ireland. Nathalie Walker, CEO of DCU Educational Trust, told gathered attendees: “This year we have awarded scholarships to 17 students whose talent and dedication are a tribute to those we remember today. Aidan McDonnell and Frank Durkan shone brightly in her own lives and made a significant mark on Irish society, so it is fitting that their legacies will be honoured and live on these bright and gifted Mayo students.” The 17 scholarship recipients were selected based on their talent and dedication but also according to specific criteria set by scholarship donors. Eleven scholarships were presented to undergraduate students supported by DCU’s Access Programme, which makes third level education accessible to students from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds and provides financial, academic and personal supports to help students succeed in their studies. A further five scholarships were awarded to support students engaged in postgraduate research or study in fields as diverse as law, biotechnology, marketing, journalism and international relations.

Concerns in Boyle over ‘scattered hotel’ proposal

T

here are strong views that the “scattered hotel” solution to the problems in Boyle is not the correct one. A former mayor has recently expressed her reservations about it. There has been no hotel in the town since the closure of the Royal Hotel some years ago. The building was purchased by the County Council last year and they have been seeking to find the best use for the building which is in a poor state of repair. Submissions/ideas had been sought from the public about the site. Time has moved on and former mayor of Boyle Jane Suffin claims a ‘scattered hotel’ isn’t the solution to the current problems in the town. Boyle Town team is exploring a concept that would involve refurbishing some property owners’ accommodation, with a central reception office and communal area. However, a feasibility study has found establishing a ‘scattered hotel’ in Boyle would be a ‘major financial challenge’ and most property owners are interested only if there’s grant aid. Ms. Suffin claims what’s needed in Boyle is a traditional hotel, saying a scattered hotel isn’t what’s needed.

Westport educate together school closer to a reality

D

ESPITE reports in the national media last week about restrictions in intake to ETNSs there was great excitement at the Hotel Westport last Friday evening (9 February) as Educate Together Westport held a public meeting on plans to open a school in the town. The meeting, facilitated by Educate Together’s Jennifer Buttner and with contributions from Sarah Calvey, Castlebar Educate Together National School principal, was an opportunity for parents and carers to learn more about Educate Together’s equality-based ethos, what can be done to bring Educate Together to Westport and the campaign’s next steps.

Educate Together is unique in education. Since its establishment in 1978 it has evolved a model of education that is based on equality and human rights. Right now, there are over 21,000 children in Educate Together schools around the country and constant demands from families for more places. This is testament to the value and success of Educate Together’s model of education. Westport ETNS would be the third Educate Together school in Mayo, joining Castlebar ETNS and Newtownwhite ETNS. The campaign comes as a result of a Government commitment made in 2011 to provide an Educate Together school to the

families of Westport. Parents in 43 areas were consulted on their school patron of choice and the parents of Westport chose Educate Together. Says Jennifer Buttner, Educate Together Regional Development Officer for Ireland West: “There was an excellent turn out at the Educate Together Westport campaign public meeting last Friday. We would like to thank everyone who came along and showed such interest and encouragement. There’s no doubt that there is huge support for an Educate Together national school in the town and we hope that this can be achieved in 2018.” Says Mary Horan, parent in Westport: "I was delighted to see such a huge turn-out at the meeting. All we want in Westport is the equality-based Educate Together school that was promised us by the Government in 2012. It now feels like Westport ETNS is one step closer to becoming a reality." More information on Educate Together’s campaign in Westport can be found at: www.educatetogether.ie/westport or on Facebook at Westport Educate Together.

past year, such as the rise of Thursday and even Sunday weddings. Home is still where the heart is with 94% heading down the aisle here in Ireland after an average engagement of 12 years. Civil ceremonies and blessings are becoming much more the norm now with Church weddings accounting for just over 50%. Couples really know what they want, too, visiting on average just 3 venues before making a decision. According to Ciara, “Couples, understandably, want to feel super special on their day and so knowing that their venue only hosts one wedding is the most important factor to them when choosing a venue, quickly followed by the quality of the food and value for

Rising house prices delay wedding plans for young couples With Valentine’s Day here and gone, getting engaged is likely to be on the minds of many couples! But it also looks like rising house prices is forcing many of them to put a “halter” on wedding plans – for the moment anyway. WeddingDates.ie have been researching all about what couples are planning for their special day. They spoke to more than 1,100 people * throughout Ireland and here’s what they told us! Everybody loves a summer wedding, right! Well, June weddings are still really popular at 12% but August is the top month to get married in Ireland (14%).Friday is now the most popular day to Wed but Thursday is becoming a strong contender now with 1in 7 tying the knot on a Thursday! According to WeddingDates CEO & Founder Ciara Crossan: “We’ve noticed some really interesting trends over the

money”. Speaking of money, 57% spend more than €15,000 on their wedding excluding their honeymoon and 2 in 5 spend over €2,500 on the engagement ring. Mini-moons are rising in popularity too, with many couples planning their big getaway after the wedding is over. Money, of course, is a pervasive factor, and this is why the uncertainty surrounding house prices is causing so many to delay their wedding date plans. So, what about posting those lovely wedding pics of the happy couple on social media? Almost 80% of people believe it is not OK to post photos on social media before the wedding party. In fact, 1 in 6 couples will have an outright ban on social media for their wedding with a further 35% having a ban on it for the morning of the wedding ceremony.

Mayos in Dublin honour their own

Sr. Maureen, who was presented with her award by Chairperson Julie Doyle

A

T a glittering black tie event on Saturday night last Saturday night in the Ballsbridge Hotel, Dublin the Mayo Association Dublin honoured Islandeady-native Sr. Maureen Lally by presenting her with the coveted Virginia Gallagher Award after her selection as Mayo Person of the Year some weeks ago. The gala event, rebranded this year as ‘The Yew Tree Ball’, was attended by over 500 guests to honour the 2018 award-winners. Arriving guests were treated to a red carpet prosecco reception as well as a stylish Conncullin Gin bar, generously sponsored by the Connaught Distillery, before being seated for a 4 course meal. Sr. Maureen, who was presented with her award by Chairperson Julie Doyle, is an indomitable figure who has worked hard to stem the decline of rural and agricultural life in the Tochar Valley Network. Dr Shari Dann from Michigan State University, whom Sr. Maureen had worked with to pioneer the rural network, travelled all the way from the States to celebrate with Sr. Maureen on the night, such was her admiration for the winner. The citation echoed the words of one prominent academic with whom she has worked: ‘’ In a world where the loud and boisterous seem to reign supreme, we acknowledge and hail the work of a humble and reserved enabler, a true champion of the people.” Sr. Maureen was interviewed on the night by Angelina Nugent from MWR, who also interviewed the other awardwinners. It was a particularly poignant interview with John Gallagher from Belmullet, the chairman of Comharchumann Forbartha Ionad Deirbhile, who accepted the Meitheal Award sponsored by Connolly Motor

Group on behalf of the local group for their efforts in the R116 rescue. The interview revealed that even in the darkest of tragedies, the dignity and depth of the human spirit can be revealed. Michaela Walsh from Swinford added another medal to her growing collection. The 18 year old athlete was awarded the Young Mayo Person of the year Award by the President of the Association Dr Mona McGarry, who also sponsored the award. She presented Michaela with a bursary cheque for €1000. Last year Michaela won a

bronze medal in the European Championship U20 Hammer throw in Grosseto, just one of many achievements for this young girl with an exciting future ahead. Once one of Mayos of promising young footballers in a county where the sport is a valuable currency, Michaela chose instead the less glamorous world of field sports where, in the words of her club, she is the most outstanding junior athlete not just in Mayo but in the country. Chairperson of the Association Julie Doyle, said:“We are very grateful to all our guests, our sponsors and raffle prize-givers for their overwhelming support of the rebrand of the premier event of the Association.  “Our awards provide very important recognition for the hardworking people in our County and we are delighted to be able to celebrate their achievements and contributions in a special way. This year’s awards were a great success and we were honoured and humbled to hear our winners’ stories.”     The Ballsbridge Hotel was transformed into a sea of green and red with the awards ceremony itself being presided over by the PRO Bernardine Walsh, which included a raffle of over 50 prizes worth over €10,000 generously donated by businesses in Mayo & Dublin. The Association chose Mayo Mental Health Association as their charity partner on the night and guests were shown a video of the important work MMHA do in the county, with the proceeds of the bumper envelope draw going to that worthy cause.   The guests danced the night away to the energetic tunes from Flat Out, a 4 piece band from Ballina (recently rebranded also) who are making waves in a range of music circles.

hoosing your wedding venue can seem like a very daunting task. It really doesn't have to be. Back in my wedding coordinator days i always advised brides and grooms-to-be to arrive armed with some information. This allowed me, as the wedding coordinator, to tailor the information to provide so as not to overwhelm the couple. You don’t need to have a 100% or even 20% visualisation of the day you want but there are a few essentials that are important to

Northwest Express February, 2018

know before you start looking or visiting venues. 1. Time of Year / Specific Date: Do you have a specific date in mind, if so you will need to check if they have it available in the first place. If not, if you want a certain time of year you will also need to check what’s available. Some venues can book as far as 2 years ahead for weekend dates. 2. Number of Guests: Will the venue have the capacity

to take your numbers or do they have a minimum number of guests and your numbers are less? You will need to ask what this means for you. Knowing your numbers is also the basis of the quote process; the venue can’t let you know the full cost unless you can give them an indication of your numbers. 3. Budget: This is very important, there is no point in looking at 5 star venues if you have a 3-4 star budget, you are only teasing yourself and trust me, you will be heart broken. It’s like walking in to BT’s and seeing all of those fabulous Mulberry bags and having to walk away. Soul destroying! Once you have an idea of what you feel you are willing to spend per head on the meal, that would be a good starting point. 4. Type of Venue: You may have a preference for a specific type of venue, this can also dictate price. Wedding Venue types include: Hotel, Private Estate, Castle, Farm Location, Marquee, Glamping, Restaurant and the list goes on. 5. Home or Abroad: Do you want to stay at home or do you want to go abroad? Searching at home for a wedding venue is

obviously a great deal easier than going abroad. It also depends on your abroad location as there are some excellent destination planners in some countries and they can make the whole experience very easy. 6. Bar Closing Time / Bar Extension: Let’s face it, us Irish love a good ‘oul party and god forbid a bar closing when the craic is just getting started! One thing you should find out is what time the bar will close at and if it is standard times, can they provide a bar extension, if they can, how much will it be and if they can’t, is there another venue that you can carry on the party at. 7. Decor: Where i find most budgets clocking up all of the unforeseen costs is table and venue decor. You will need to see what comes with your package as if it is a blank canvas you will need to hire and furnish the venue or if they hotel offers a certain decor, you may want to see if you can add your personal touch to it. 8. Reputation: Always check the forums to see if other brides have reviewed your

chosen venue. If there have been issues, you will be aware so that you can ensure that it doesn't happen on your watch or if they have a glowing reputation this will give you reassurance. If it’s a hotel, also check TripAdvisor as may see reviews on the rooms and food. 9. One wedding per day: For some this can be an issue, just double check if they have a one wedding per day policy. There are some venues that are huge and they can do more than one wedding per day really well but others can be opportunistic and can take 2 a day and you could end up standing next to the other bride at the bar. 10. Civil Ceremony option: A very popular choice for today’s brides and grooms is the civil ceremony. Check and see if you can host your ceremony within the venue or its grounds, this would save your guests from travelling to multiple locations. It also gives you a nicer option than the registry office. A great venue and wedding coordinator will guide you through the process and help you along the way. Good luck choosing and congratulations on your day!

A month by month checklist to plan your perfect wedding. 12 months Ideally, planning should begin 12 months before the big day. Decide on the style of wedding you want. Booking your reception venue is a priority. Book reception entertainment/musicians/DJ. If you’re employing a wedding consultant/planner, choose a professional with a good reputation. You’ll be spending a lot of time together, so be sure that you select a person you can get along with. 11 months Book your photographer and/or videographer. If the ceremony is to be held in a church, synagogue, mosque or other religious building, check that you will be permitted to take photographs or film there. Choose your attendants, best man and ushers and get the wedding date firmly in their diaries.

Northwest Express February, 2018

If you’re holding your reception in a marquee on your own land, reserve all the equipment you will need, including marquee, chairs, tables, etc, and book a caterer. 10 months Choose your cake maker and cake design. Confirm the menu with the reception venue. You’ll have given plenty of thought to your wedding outfits, and those of your attendants. Make your final decision. Allow at least six months for a made-to-measure dress to be completed. Start looking for accessories. If you are hiring formal wear for male members of the party place your order. Choose your wedding ring(s). 9 months If you have made a final decision on your dress, your bridesmaids’ dresses and the general theme, choose your florist and organise

bouquets and buttonholes, and flowers for the church or reception. If you’re marrying in church, check that it is appropriate for you to decorate the church (the ladies who normally decorate the church might do it for you by special arrangement), and confirm with the reception venue whether or not they are including floral decoration as part of the package. If you’ve set your heart on a particular honeymoon, book it early to avoid disappointment. If you’re undecided, start browsing the brochures and book as soon as you’ve made your choice. Remember that exotic destinations may require vaccinations and that some courses of vaccinations or drugs must start several weeks before you leave (and continue after your return). Book your flight ticket in the name on your passport. Organise your gift list. 8 months If you’re arranging a church wedding, chat to the vicar and/or organist about music. Discuss possible dates for a rehearsal, if required, and finalise the form of the service and the readings prior to having the invitations and order of service printed. If you’re having a civil wedding, choose any readings that you wish to include in the service. Send copies of your chosen readings to the person you have asked to read, so that they can practice. 7 months Have another look at your provisional guest list. Order your stationery, which includes invitations, place-cards, orders-of-service, thank-you notes, napkins, matchbooks, favours, little

boxes for posting wedding cake, etc. Start looking for clothes for your honeymoon. Check the expiry date of your passports and renew them if necessary. Some countries will deny entry if your passport is close to expiry. 6 months Book your wedding transport or make firm arrangements with family and friends about lifts or borrowing vehicles. Arrange reliable back-ups. Buy gifts for best man, attendants, etc. As soon as you have your veil, tiara or other head-dress, make an appointment with your hair stylist to discuss and try various styles. Visit beauty salons/make-up counters to discuss and try ideas. 5 months If you aren’t spending your wedding night at your reception venue, book accommodation. Either make bookings for guests (remember you will probably be able to negotiate a reduced rate for a block booking) or give them a list of local hotels/guest houses to make their own bookings. 4 months Confirm that everything you have booked so far is on course and that all friends and family involved in the arrangements are sure of their role. If the stationery hasn’t arrived, chase it up. Give the caterers your estimated number of guests. 3 months Send out the invitations and keep an up-to-date list of refusals and acceptances. Send out your thank-you notes for gifts as they arrive and keep a

record of who has given what. 2 months Try on all your wedding clothes. If you are unhappy with anything, take action now. If you have left anything to others to organise, check that they have done it. Confirm your honeymoon booking. Check whether you need visas. Arrange foreign currency if necessary. Work out a seating plan for the reception. Arrange your hen and stag nights or delegate the task to your chief bridesmaid and best man. Do not hold either the night before the wedding. 1 month In all the hustle and bustle of wedding preparations, don’t forget each other. Make time for each other and if you can, don’t discuss wedding preparations. Buy each other little gifts and remember why you’re doing this. Make a plan of timings for the day and distribute a copy to everyone concerned. Make enquiries about any other events being held on the same day that might create traffic delays. If you will be moving into a new home after the wedding, arrange forwarding of post and any important changes of name. Buy a guest book to place at the reception so your friends and relatives can record messages. Delegate tasks to your friends and relatives. Make sure that somebody has your handbag, make-up, hairbrush, tissues, etc, handy, and a large umbrella in their car/in the vestry just in case. Write your speech(es). Enjoy your hen and stag nights. The planning should be over by now and it’s time to unwind, relax and look forward to the big day.

Laugh out loud: The healing benefits of laughter A little chuckle goes a long way when it comes to maintaining your health. Body and soul have a laugh and you’ll get happy!

“Laughter is an instant vacation.” When Milton Berle (pictured) said this, he wasn’t too far off, according to some researchers who think laughter is like a wonder drug capable of treating a host of maladies related to stress and lifestyle. “Laughter therapy is making people laugh for healing purposes,” says Albert Nerenberg, a journalist, documentary filmmaker (for instance, Laughlology, in 2009) and laugh-ologist, an expert who lectures on the science, practice and therapeutic effects of laughter. He brings the therapy to the workplace to help relieve stress and increase motivation, and to the health-care profession to promote and maintain health. But he cautions, “Occasionally, you hear wild claims that laughter therapy cures cancer or a terminal illness. The therapy holds great promise,

but there is a danger of creating false expectations.” Researchers continue to study laughter’s effects and have made some discoveries on how it benefits our well-being.

Brain chemicals From a neurological perspective, pioneering studies by Dr. Lee Berk and Dr. Stanley Tan of Loma Linda University Medical Center in California have shown that laughing triggers a flood of pleasureinducing neurotransmitters, like dopamine, in the brain. Low levels of both these brain chemicals are associated with the winter blues and Seasonal Affective Disorder, which affects almost 20 per cent of Canadians. Nerenberg has been using laughter therapy to help treat drug addicts at a residential drug rehab centre located near the Quebec-U.S. border. “Laughing produces dopamine in the brain much in the same way as cocaine,” he explains, “so you essentially substitute laughing fits for drug addiction, addicting people to a positive behaviour rather than a negative one. They’re after rushes and really don’t care where they get them.”

Immune response A depressed immune system is vulnerable to colds and viruses. According to a 2001 study in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, laughter boosts the activity of your system’s natural killer cells and other defences by increasing the number of antibodyproducing cells. Laughter enhances the response of disease-killing cells such as gamma-interferon, diseasefighting protein; B cells, which produce disease-destroying antibodies; and T cells, key to immune system response.

Stress response “We once thought laughter was the opposite of crying, but it’s more appropriate to think of it as the opposite of stress,” explains Nerenberg. He says laughter affects the nervous and endocrine systems by metabolizing stress hormones, which include cortisol and adrenaline, the fight-or-flight compounds released during times of stress. Stress hormones bombard the heart, forcing it to beat as if in a constant state of fight or flight. But laughter appears to reduce the amount of stress hormones your body produces. Blood flow A good laugh can be good for your heart. Laughter helps expand capillaries, increasing blood and

oxygen flow throughout your body. This may help protect against heart attacks and strokes by relaxing constricted blood vessels and promoting relaxation, which may lower levels of cortisol, a hormone known to contribute to high blood pressure, as do constricted blood vessels. Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin measured the blood flow of 17 volunteers after watching a comedy or a documentary. The comedy group showed significantly increased heart rate and blood flow of 17 per cent for up to 24 hours. Conversely, among the documentary viewers, blood vessels constricted by 15 per cent. Constricted arteries can lead to high blood pressure. Social benefits Laughing with others is more powerful than laughing alone, so plan some face time with friends. Sharing laughter is one of the most effective tools for keeping relationships strong and resilient. Simply anticipating laughter was found to release beneficial hormones while lowering levels of harmful chemicals in the body. Laughter can also stimulate creative thoughts that lead to a greater sense of self-worth and optimism.

Speaking of optimism In 2011, Nerenberg worked with Maxwell House on a survey about optimism, and the results are positive. Eighty-five per cent of us consider ourselves optimistic; 86 per cent of us feel that optimism is contagious; and 79 per cent of us try to encourage pessimists to be more optimistic. Encourage your own healthier outlook by adding these simple laughter-inducing habits. Smile early and often in the day; it produces a mild hormonal change that can improve your mood and produce positive emotions. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and, like laughter, it’s contagious. Look up at the ceiling, and you’ll notice a positive lift. There’s no science to explain this, but it’s a fairly universal phenomenon, says Nerenberg. The opposite is true as well; if you walk around looking down, you’ll start to feel down. Fake it till you feel it Just going through the motions will trigger real laughter. Studies show the positive effects of smiling occur even if the smile is fake; faked laughter also provides the same benefits.

Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me The Decadent Theatre Company brings Frank McGuinness’s play to Ballina Arts Centre on Friday 23rd & Saturday 24th March, 8pm “We are in a decidedly perilous position, to put it mildly”’ Adam, an American doctor; Edward, an Irish journalist; and Michael, an English academic, have little to unite them beyond being human in the same small space. Yet somehow, together, they determine to ward off madness and forestall despair. Somewhere lurk their unseen captors yet, in the cell, there are stories of adventure and love, there is song and laughter, and even a surge of writing, cocktail-drinking and movie-making. Inspired by the abduction of Brian Keenan, taken hostage in Lebanon in the 1980s, Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me is playwright Frank McGuinness’s hymn to the defiant power of the human spirit and the creative imagination. "Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me sees Frank McGuinness at the very top of his form, extracting from the depths of the human condition uncrushable determination, passion and compassion, anger and jealousy, spite and fear and lashings of black subversive humour." The Irish Times Tickets: €18 / €16. Early booking advised.

Swan Lake / Loch na hEala Created by Michael KeeganDolan / Wed 21 and Thurs 22 Feb 2018, 8pm / €25/20conc @ The Hawks Well Theatre Following a critically acclaimed international tour that included Dublin Theatre Festival, Sadler’s Wells, London and Sydney Opera House, the winner of best production and best costume design at the Irish Times Theatre Awards 2017 comes to the Hawk's Well Theatre. From the imagination of one of Ireland’s foremost dance and theatre makers comes a magical adaptation of one of the most famous of all story ballets, Swan Lake. Michael Keegan-Dolan has forged a searing new vision for this beloved tale, creating a world of magical realism, powerful imagery and potent storytelling. Featuring a cast of thirteen,

including Mikel Murfi, this Swan Lake is rooted in a place where ancient Irish mythology and modern Ireland meet. The Dublin based band Slow Moving Clouds has created a new score that combines Nordic and Irish traditional music with minimalist and experimental influences. The result is a Swan Lake for our time and a stunning debut for Micheal Keegan-Dolan’s new company, Tea! Daṁsa. This production is presented by Nomad Theatre Network and supported by Arts Council Ireland.

Snowpoet music at Arts Centre

Riverside Theatre is back with J. B. Keane’s “The Chastitute”

Ballina Arts Centre, 8th March. Thought You Knew is the second album from Snowpoet, the London based band led by writing duo of Jazz FM Vocalist of the Year (2016) Lauren Kinsella and multi-instrumentalist Chris Hyson. The band also features Josh Arcoleo on saxophone, Matt Robinson on keys, Nick Costley-White on guitar and Dave Hamblett on drums. Born out of a deep musical friendship and understanding, their acclaimed eponymous debut Snowpoet has garnered rave reviews and a devoted audience for their compelling sound, drawing comparisons with Bjork. Thought You Knew takes their musical collaboration and sound to the next level, blending sweet hook-laden vocal lines with warm and lush arrangements. This music is infectious, delicate and tasteful. With a new home at Edition Records, they are set to reach new heights in their profile, confirming their reputation as one of the most innovative and creative new bands in the UK today. Tickets: €15 / €12. Early booking advised. Presented in association with the Improvised Music Company.

Ballina Arts Centre, Thursday 22nd, Friday 23rd, Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th February, 8pm. John B Keane’s The Chastitute is a hilarious look at ‘courting’ in rural Ireland. The play centres around John Bosco McLaine, a bachelor in his fifties who has decided it is high time he decided to look for a wife. As he has never had a serious relationship, he is what the church would call a ‘chastitute’, someone “without holy orders who has never laid down with a woman”. He seeks help from the local matchmaker in an attempt to meet women. But he soon finds that despite his efforts courting is a tricky and competitive business, and the universe seems to be against his hopes of finding a companion. Poor John Bosco seems to be the unluckiest man in the world, well-meaning but always managing to put his foot in it or be fooled. Not to be missed. Tickets: €12 / €10. Early booking advised.
