OT on the heels of the Ryanair announcement last week of four additional continental flights for Ireland West Airport, Knock, to Paris, Frankfort, Barcelona and Milan, comes the additional news of a grant of €4 million for runway and safety works.

While the latest decision may have been forced on the Government due to EU regulations that the end of the runway has to be extended within the next three years, news of the investment, in conjunction with all the other positive developments, will serve to cement Knock’s position as a major regional airport, particularly after the recent downgrading of Sligo and Galway.

This was acknowledged by airport managing director Joe Gilmore earlier this week when he said the funding was a further vote of confidence in Knock. He said that €3m of the funds would be spent on the runway end safety area on the N17 side of the airport. Some of the remaining €1million had already been spent this year on safety and security equipment. The balance of funding will be used for improvements to the fire station and it is planned to introduce a snow plough and de-icing equipment. He was also confident that additional essential funding would be provided later for extension of the passenger apron and main runway.

Positive times ahead for Knock Airport continued from front page Many people may not be aware that Ireland West Airport Knock now serves over 25 international destinations and traffic numbers for 2011 are expected to exceed 650,000, with a further 10% growth in 2012 being forecasted. The Ryanair announcement of last week was preceded in July of this year by Flybe’s decision to introduce cheap flights to Edinburgh.

A recent Ernst & Young independent study revealed that the airport supports a total of 984 jobs in the region with an overall economic contribution of €128m annually.

Making the latest announcement Minister for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring, said the project itself would provide 35 construction jobs over the next five months.

Given the regional airport’s central position in Connacht, within an hour’s drive of key towns like Sligo, Boyle, Carrick-on-Shannon, and its closeness to Galway city, it is destined to play a pivotal role in the development of industry, culture and tourism in the west in the years ahead.

Sligo Woodturner in the Art for Alexandra Appeal ARTISTS from all over Ireland donated pieces of their work to help raise money at a public auction, entitled Art for Alexandra, which was held at Adams Auction House in Blackrock on Sunday 27th November.

Among the donors was Imelda Ryan-Jones from Riverstown, who donated a Matt Jones Square Edged Bowl in Yew to the Appeal.

The charity event came about via the well known Joe Duffy Live Line radio show when listeners voiced their disgust at the horrific ordeal dealt to Russian artist Alexandra Trotsenko by Dublin man James Kenny.

In a random attack Kenny burst into her home in Finglas, stabbed her in the face, neck, chest and abdomen, then she was bound and gagged before he cut off fingers on her right hand. He then left her for dead.

When news of the recent Court Case against Kenny was heard up and down the country people were appalled. “As I watched the news that night I was so sickened that this would happen in Ireland” said Imelda.“To think that this young woman went to answer her own front door at 2.30 in the day and was met with such violence really is shocking”.

“Matt and I were delighted to donate and a piece made from Yew was particularly

poignant, as the tree is a symbol of rebirth” said Imelda. “We also sent Alexandra a present for herself, a Matt Jones Wine Stopper, in Yew, to keep as a small memento of the Auction”.

Imelda travelled to Blackrock to further support the event and was delighted to find a large crowd in attendance. There were 196 pieces for sale on the day and the total sum raised was a fabulous figure of €60,000. All proceeds go towards Alexandra’s medical bills including funding an operation to fit custom-made replacement prosthetic fingers on her hand to enable her to return to the drawing board.

Motorists 'put lives at risk' by using phones in hard shoulder HALF of all motorists are putting their lives at risk by stopping on motorways to make routine phone calls or send texts.

Disciplining a child, going to the toilet, changing clothes and taking a nap are also cited as reasons for pulling on to the hard shoulder.

And according to a survey of 8,400 drivers carried out by AA Ireland and the Road Safety Authority (RSA), some 45pc said they used the hard shoulder to make or receive calls and to send text messages.

Motorists should not stop on a motorway unless it was an emergency, the RSA said.

AA director of policy Conor Faughnan said: "A motorway hard shoulder is an extremely dangerous place to be and should only be used in an emergency, for example if your car breaks down and you can't restart it.

"It's alarming the number of motorists

willing to casually pull over and put themselves and their passengers in a dangerous situation -- and all too often to respond to a text or answer a call."

Mr Faughnan added: "If you experience car trouble, make your way to the nearest exit or designated rest area and find a safe place to pull in before calling for assistance.

"If this is not an option for you, pull in as far as you can and use your hazard lights to alert traffic behind you."

The number of people found walking on motorways was also a cause of concern in the survey.

In the survey, 236 individual motorists admitted to stopping to either collect or drop off a passenger on a motorway hard shoulder.

RSA chief executive Noel Brett said: "Pedestrians are at a massive risk on a motorway as you're taking your life in your hands and putting other road users in danger, too."

The Frankie Kennedy Winter School Launch THE offical launch of the Frankie Kennedy Winter School took place on the Ronan Beo @3 on RTE Radio na Gaeltachta earlier this week.

The programme which was broadcast live from the Grand Social in Dublin with music from Altan, Steve Cooney, Brendan Begley, Fidil and Maighread and Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill .

This year Gaoth Dobhair will host the 18th annual Frankie Kennedy Winter School from December 27th to January 1st.The event is one of the largest traditional music gatherings in the county with international reknown, it is attended by musicians from all around the world.

The Frankie Kennedy Winter School was established in December 1994 following Frankie's untimely death from cancer in September of that year.

Frankie Kennedy, born in Belfast in 1955, became one of Ireland's best known traditional flute players through his work with the band Altan which he managed and founded with his partner Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh.

The school's vision is to continue his huge contribution to Irish traditional music, especially the music and song of Donegal.

Four principal venues

will be used during the school, Ionad Cois Locha (Dunlewey Lakeside Centre) in Dunlewey, Errigal Hostel in Dunlewey, Ionad Naomh Pádraig, Dobhair and Teach Huidí Beag, Bunbeg.

Classes will be provided in the following: flute, fiddle, uilleann pipes, tin whistle, bodhrán, button accordion, bouzouki, sean nós singing, house dancing, concertina, and guitar. We will also be providing classes in both music arrangement and composition as well as songwriting in the Irish language. Unfortunately these classes are not suitable for absolute beginners.

THE Minister for State for Small Business, Mr John Perry T.D. last week presented An Taoiseach, Mr Enda Kenny, T.D. with the Report of the Advisory Group for Small Business – “The Voice of Small Business – A Plan for Action”.

The Taoiseach launched this Group in June and had asked Minister Perry for a report by end of year and to identify 5 Priority Actions from the Report on which immediate implementation can be commenced. “The Government recognises the challenges faced by small business and the contribution this diverse sector can make to economic recovery.

This report “The Voice of Small Business” will provide a valuable input into Minister Bruton’s Jobs Strategy by setting out the collective views of small business,” said the Taoiseach.

The Taoiseach commended the work of the Group, under Minister Perry’s chairmanship, and thanked all of the members for their participation in the Group’s work to date.

The Minister for Small Business, John Perry, said “There are very good, practical and pragmatic ideas which aim to address immediate barriers and to set the scene for growth and job creation. Small firms are regionally spread, they create employment locally,

contribute to building a community, and enhance a location’s attractiveness as a place in which to live and do business.”

An Inter-Departmental Liaison Group has also been established to pursue those recommendations of the Group which require cross-Government implementation. Minister Perry expressed his appreciation of the appointment by his Ministerial colleagues of representatives within their Departments who will act as advocates for the proposals of the Group. There are almost 200,000 small businesses in Ireland involving over 655,000 people. A significant proportion of these firms employ less than 10 people. Many trade on international markets, and there is potential for many more to internationalise.

The Report is cast against a grim statistical background which shows there were 8000 fewer small businesses in Ireland in 2009 compared with 2007 (and 105,000 less employed) and the drop is understood to be continuing. Lack of finance for working capital and failure to deal with upward only reviews for rent are believed to be major factors in this decline. Time will tell whether this Report or initiatives introduced to bolster the sector will help to stem the tide.

Sligo Christmas Markets & Lighting up Ceremony THIS Sunday 4th December 2011, the lights are being turned on for the festive season with great fanfare, in a switching on ceremony that includes live entertainment and festive offerings from a range of local entertainment in Quay Street, Sligo. The crowds will be treated to a fantastic display right in the heart of Sligo City Centre. Quay Street will be transformed into a winter wonderland with a Christmas fair offering a range of markets specialising in a variety of gifts and crafts.

This year both Sligo Chamber and Sligo Borough Council are delighted to be able to bring an outdoor Ice Rink to the streets of Sligo for the first time. AVA Systems will be adding to the festivities and enhancing Quay Street with illuminated lighting and specially constructed snow scenes. The City will come alive with costumed traders, carol singers and the delicious smells of roasted chestnuts, hot chocolate and hot fruit punch. Free entertainment kicks off at 12noon on Sunday 4th December outside City Hall. Kids of all ages can enjoy some slippery fun on Funny Bones’ synthetic ice-rink and there will also be a Christmas market with a variety of indigenous traders in operation from 12-6pm located at Quay Street.

The crowds will be entertained from 3.30 to 5pm by the Barbershop Choir, the Orpheus Choir and the Ransboro school choir,

while the costumes, illuminated display features and experience of visual artists of The Workhouse, who entertained the crowds last year will be on hand again this year. A special performance by our very own Tabby will take place immediately after the tree is lit. Quay Street will be closed to traffic and taxis will be temporarily relocated for the duration. We hope that the public will join us in the celebrations by coming along to City Hall. Everyone is more than welcome. After the turning on of the Christmas Lights, €2500 worth of Shopping Vouchers will be given away. The draw from the consumer retail promotion organised by Sligo Chamber and some local media will be held.

Over 70 pubs were shortlisted for the contest which saw the public cast votes for their favourite pub snugs throughout October.

The O’Connor family have been publicans in Ballisodare for over 65 years, with a third generation of the family now serving behind the bar. Rather than laying claim to any famous clientele, this family run business is home to the everyman. Appeal from Oxfam Castlebar shop “Make Christmas a little sweeter for people in need”

his November and December, the Oxfam Castlebar shop is urging people to choose their Christmas presents from its range of Unwrapped gifts.

Since Oxfam first launched its Unwrapped range of Christmas presents more than 500,000 people in countries like Tanzania and Malawi have had their lives improved and at the same time mums, dads, grannies and teachers all around Mayo have received Unwrapped gifts like goats, seeds and school books that have made them smile.

Student sweeps the boards at Karate World Championships F irst year IT Sligo student Liam Codd has won six medals at the W.T.K.A (World Traditional Karate Association) Championships in Viareggio, Italy.

The 17 year old from Ballygawley, Co Sligo swept the boards winning gold in the Kickboxing, Karate Point (75kgs) and Kumite Shobu Sanbon (75kgs) events in the junior (16 to 18 years) categories.

He won silver in the junior Karate Point (70kgs),Kumite Shobu Sanbon (70kgs) and Karate Point (Team) events. The Irish team arrived home with 58 medals from the world championships.

Liam’s successful streak continued last weekend (November 20th) when he got his 2nd dan black belt.

“Once you get the black belt you can progress from 1st dan right up to 10th dan,” explained Liam who the started sport when he was just eight and who has won 18 world titles at cadet and junior level.

A first year on the Health Science & Physiology course at IT Sligo, he hopes to pursue a career which will allow him to indulge his love of sport.

“I would like to work as a physiotherapist,” explained Liam who is also hoping to establish his own karate school in Ballintogher.

A member of the Greendragons club which is attached to the Mercy College in Sligo, he said he owes a lot to his instructors John Sweeney and John’s son Michael.

“I really want to teach karate. Unfortunately it is not an Olympic sport yet but I hope to progress and to compete at senior level in the world championship,” he explained. “I would also like as an instructor, to produce world champions”.

An all-round sports enthusiast,

Liam is delighted with college life and looking forward to availing of the state of the arts sport facilities there. A keen soccer and GAA player he is a member of the Arrow Harps soccer club and also plays Gaelic with St Michael’s. He also finds some spare time for break dancing.

“Karate is a very disciplined sport with a lot of focus on self-control,” said the student. “It does spill over into other areas of your life”.

His interest in martial arts was aroused as a child when he started to watch Bruce Lee films. He does not think parents should have any worries about letting their children start karate. “Even though it is a contact sport it’s not dangerous because it is all about self-control. I think there is more chance of being injured while playing football.”

PEER pressure and technology are putting girls at risk of being subjected to cruel comments 24 hours a day, England's communications champion has warned.

Jean Gross said social media and texting have given girls more ways of excluding each other.

Speaking ahead of addressing the Girls' Schools Association's annual conference in Bristol, Mrs Gross said: "Anybody who's been a girl knows that girls can often make each other's lives a misery in school through communication, through this business of forming of cliques and of being one minute 'you're my best friend' and the next day, suddenly, 'you're not my best friend, I've got another best friend'.

"Now girls have got even more ways of excluding each other through communication, so they used to do it just through verbal language, now they can do it through texting and de-friending and all of those things."

Mrs Gross said she believes that girls know when they are being mean to each other, but added: "I don't think they know quite how much it hurts, because the people who may be doing it, it may not happen to them, they're protected..."

She added: "Teachers can teach some of the skills of say, not following blindly, you can teach assertiveness, you can teach girls about this kind of bullying, teach them to understand it."

"Some of my friends who have got girls inside school now say that you can't get away from it, you go home and it's there."

Among older phone users, it appears that texting is still a popular way to flirt, with 26% of those aged 18 to 54 preferring to mostly flirt by sending text messages rather than holding a real life, face-to-face conversation.

In total 2,002 UK mobile phone users across the country were surveyed in the online poll, conducted by mobile phone insurance provider insurance2go.co.uk.

The West Midlands is the British region home to the most number of people likely to initiate romance via text message, with 24% tempting each other with texts.

The East Midlands closely follows with 22%.

Londoners also scored highly with one in five mobile owners using text messages to initiate romance.

Duncan Spencer, managing director of insurance2go.co.uk, said text flirting was a growing phenomenon.

He said: "Texting offers people a way to flirt with someone they may be attracted to without the danger of feeling embarrassed if their

advances are not reciprocated.

"Mobile phones, particularly smart phones, have become so much more than just something to use to make a call. Now people's whole lives revolve around them, and that in-

cludes their most intimate feelings."

Other top texters are the North West, with 20% preferring texts to conversations in person when it comes to flirting, and Yorkshire and the Humber, with 19% saying the same.

Facebook cuts degrees of separation

FACEBOOK has shrunk the degrees of separation between people from six to four, a study has claimed.

Since social psychologist Stanley Milgram

conducted an experiment in the 1960s, it has been widely accepted there are six degrees of separation between many people.

But Facebook's data team, in collaboration

with researchers from a Milan university, has found there are now, on average, four degrees of separation between people on Facebook. The study assessed the relationships between 721 million active Facebook users and their 69 billion friendship links.

"First, we measured how many friends people have, and found that this distribution differs significantly from previous studies of large-scale social networks," the Facebook data team said.

"Second, we found that the degrees of separation between any two Facebook users is smaller than the commonly cited six degrees, and has been shrinking over the past three years as Facebook has grown."

The researchers said the most distant Facebook user in the Siberian tundra or the Peruvian rainforest was probably no more than a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend. They used algorithms to approximate the number of links between all pairs of individuals on the site and found 92% can be linked by four degrees, meaning two people are connected by no more than four friends. Six degrees of separation refers to the idea that everyone is on average six steps away from each other.

Fake Hitler passport mocks Fuhrer

Giant 30mph sign leaves drivers in no doubt of the speed limit A fake passport listing Adolf Hitler as a Jew with 'a little moustache' is being shown off by the National Archives.

The spoof was made by British special forces during the Second World War to demonstrate their forgery skills - and mock the Fuhrer.

Forgers, often recently released from prison, were employed by the Special Operations Executive to make fake passports, travel permits and work passes.

After the war ended examples of such documents were preserved to illustrate their work - with the Hitler passport one of many held by the National Archives.

Although accurate to the tiniest detail and showing exactly what the forgers were capable of, Hitler's passport also shows their sense of humour.

As well as a red 'J', which stood for a 'Jew' on a German passport, they have given the infamous dictator a visa allowing him entry into Palestine - which was under British control at the time. The passport also lists the Nazi leader's occupation as a 'painter' and under distinguishing features they list his 'little moustache'.

Mark Dunton, a records specialist at the National Archives, said: "I've looked at the fakes and the thing is, they are absolutely immaculate.

"The Hitler passport is irreplaceable, it is almost beyond value.

"I think it is very much in tune with the British public's way of belittling Hitler, cutting him down to size by ridiculing him."

Student trapped in clothes horse A student had to be cut free by firefighters after she got her head trapped inside a clothes horse.

Danielle Morgan, of the University of Derby, admits she was "mucking about" in her flatmate's bedroom when the accident happened.

Friends and staff at Sir Peter Hilton Court hall of residence tried to free her before calling the fire service, reports the BBC. The 18-yearold said she had been left with bruising to her neck and shoulders but could now laugh about the accident. She had fallen off the bed of her flatmate, Lisa Smith, 18, when the clothes horse fell on top of her and her head went through the frame.

Miss Morgan, 18, from North Wales, said: "My friends just thought it was hilarious.

"I found it funny at first but after it got taken off I had a panic attack and the ambulance came out."

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that they used cutting equipment to free Miss Morgan from the clothes horse.

Frustrated resident Tim Backhouse took drastic action when it came to limiting the number of speeding vehicles in the village of Bow, Devon painting a 15ft-high 30mph sign on the side of his house.

THE father of three was concerned about the high volume of cars speeding by his home, so after the council failed to take action the 47-year-old took matters into his own hands.

Mr Backhouse spent four hours painting the 30mph sign using specialist ladders and red and white emulsion paint. The end result was a speed-limit sign that's about as obvious as any we've ever seen.

After constant rejections from highway officials, the painting of the sign cost Mr Backhouse a relatively paltry ÂŁ100.

'I know it might seem like a bit of a drastic measure but I'm sick and tired of motorists, lorries in particular, speeding through,' he said.

'There is no speed camera in the village so no incentive for people to abide by the law.

'If drivers just stuck to the speed limit Bow would be a much nicer place to live.'

THE 49-year-old, who has not been named, was on holiday in Tenerife at the time of the incident and tumbled while having sex with her partner in a hotel stairwell.

She dropped several feet and was only saved from hitting the marble floor below as her ankle was trapped between two bars.

Her husband contacted the emergency services and firemen freed the redfaced holidaymaker.

The couple may have been hoping they could keep the incident as quiet as possible, however, they had plenty of explaining to do when local police, national police and a crew of firefighters all responded to the call.

She was taken to hospital where she was diagnosed with a broken ankle, and to add to the embarrassment, the sirens on the ambulance weren't working so she had to be given a police escort.

A police spokesman told the Daily Mail: 'Her good luck was that getting her leg caught stopped her from falling. Her bad luck was that she broke her ankle, was naked and couldn't get free.'

He added that while the couple do not face any police charges, they have been warned to think about safe sex in the future.

'Had her leg not been trapped between the banisters, the consequences could have been much more serious,' he continued.

Cancer is on the rise and nearly 40 per cent of Britons will develop the disease at some point in their lives, according to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Just ten years ago this figure was one in three.

So what is triggering this increase?

Experts point to an ageing population (older people are more at risk as their cells age) and lifestyle factors, such as poor diet, smoking and a lack of exercise.

Alcohol is another factor: earlier this month a study found that women who drink as little as two-and-a-half units of wine a day — equivalent to a 175 ml glass of wine — increase their risk of breast cancer by 15 per cent.

Many people have their own ideas about what’s also behind the rise — from hormones in chicken to microwave ovens and barbecued meat. Is there any truth in these theories? We asked the experts...

Mobiles are ranked the same as car fumes but lower than asbestos (the highest possible tier).

Yet a study published last month on the British Medical Journal website, disputes these findings. Led by the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology in Denmark, it looked at more than 350,000 people with mobile phones over an 18year period.

Researchers concluded users were at no greater risk than anyone else of developing cancer of the brain or nervous system.

EXPERT COMMENT: ‘There have been endless publications on the possible link between mobile phones and cancer,’ says Professor Karol Sikora, medical director of Cancer Partners UK. ‘Due to the lack of long-term studies no one really knows if there is a risk, but if there is one it’s likely to be very small.That’s because otherwise we would have seen a very clear relationship beginning to emerge by now.

‘Mobile phone use surged in the Nineties and we would have seen more brain, head and neck tumours by now.

‘A problem with long-term research with phones is that the technology — and therefore the type of radiation — is constantly changing.

'However, it is worth remembering that, anecdotally, women chat on the phone a lot more than men, and they do not have a higher incidence of brain tumours.’

GENES THE THEORY: It’s often thought that cancer is ‘genetic’ so you can’t really do much about it. In fact, experts

THE THEORY: Drinking steaming hot drinks is thought to damage the gullet. Hot tea was linked with an increased risk of oesophageal cancer in an Iranian study published in the British Medical Journal.

Compared with warm or lukewarm tea (65c or cooler), hot tea (65-69c) was associated with twice the risk of oesophageal cancer, and very hot tea (70c or hotter) with an eight-fold increased risk.

Drinking a cup of tea in less than two minutes straight after it was poured was associated with a five-fold higher risk of oesophageal cancer compared with drinking tea four or more minutes after being poured.

EXPERT COMMENT:‘In countries such as Iran and Brazil, the culture is to consume absolutely boiling hot drinks,’ explains Professor Martin Wiseman, medical and scientific adviser at the World Cancer Research Fund.

‘They also often drink it using a metal straw which takes the liquid right to the back of the throat.This seems to cause inflammation of the oesophagus, and inflammation is associated with cancer as it can increase the risk of abnormal cells developing.

‘However, in the UK we tend to drink our tea several degrees colder and also add milk, which has a cooling effect and essentially eliminates this risk.’

MOBILE PHONES THE THEORY: Earlier this year, the World Health Organisation admitted that mobile phones may cause cancer.

think around 5 to 10 per cent of cancers may be linked to inherited genes.

They have identified genes that increase risk for some of the more common cancers, such as cancers of the breast, bowel, ovary, womb and prostate.

For instance, women who have inherited the faulty BRCA-1 or BRCA-2 genes have an increased lifetime risk of breast cancer.

EXPERT COMMENT: ‘It is true that around 10 per cent of cancers may be due to your genetic background,’ says Professor Sikora. ‘This is the one risk factor you can’t do anything about, but a healthy lifestyle and not smoking, in particular, also play an important role.’

CONSTIPATION THE THEORY: Some people believe that constipation — where stools sit in the bowel for a long time — raises the risk of bowel cancer as the waste products in them may cause a change in the lining of the bowel.

EXPERT COMMENT: ‘We know that the incidence of colon cancer is lower in areas such as the Far East, where the transit time of food through the body is much quicker because they eat more fibre and vegetables,’ says Professor Sikora.

‘A high-fibre diet helps cancer-causing compounds pass through quicker, reducing your risk of developing colon cancer.’

How a horse kicked off the movie industry It was always agreed that a galloping horse kept at least one hoof on the ground. But in 1872, Californian governor and railroad tycoon Leland Stanford, who was a race horse owner, took a bet for $25,000 (the equivalent of $500,000 today) that all four hooves sometimes leave the ground. He hired English photographer Eadweard Muybridge to capture the movement of horses to prove his point.

But Standford to wait 5 years for the results. Muybridge, an eccentric persona, was hiding in South America after being blamed for the death of his wife’s lover. On his return to the US in 1877, Muybridge set up 12 cameras at the Sacramento racetrack to photograph a galloping horse. He stuck the images on a rotating disc and shone a light through them. Not only did it prove that a galloping horse sometimes has all fours off the ground, but the photographic technique became the basis for the movie camera.
