W

ITH the recent debacle over transparency at Irish Water many councils around the region are focusing on the potential loss of income as a result of the revenue transfer to the water authority.

Earlier this week, in Donegal, Fianna Fáil, Sinn Fein and an independent councillor brought national focus on the water income issue when they refused to approve their County Council's 2014 budget.

One of the key issues cited by the trio was the loss of the Council's water revenue to the newly formed Irish Water. The council was only eventually saved from abolition through the absence of a Fianna Fail councilor.

The authorities, in general, are incensed with what the public have already adjudged as a mixture of arrogance and bragging when it emerged that the Irish Water spent €50 million on consultancy fees and a further €50 million on start-up costs. They are now under scrutiny by the Dail Committee on the Environment.

In Sligo, the impact is likely to be felt in Council chambers, as they contemplate loss of major revenue streams to an organisation which, so far, has not been accountable publicly in any manner for its spending.

The loss to Sligo County Council of revenue streams such as water will deepen its difficulties in dealing with its deficit, particularly in the aftermath of the Lisadell decision. The possibility of service cuts when the new council meets in the summer seem large on the horizon.

Pylon delay described as 'cynical' in Mayo

A

FIANNA Fáil candidate in next May's local elections has described the delay in finalising the routes for the 440kV pylons through Mayo as ‘a cynical move’.

Lisa Chambers, who is contesting a seat in the Castlebar electoral area, said it is clear that Fine Gael and the Labour Party realise how politically sensitive the pylon issue is for people all over the county and their local election candidates are obviously worried about the impact the EirGrid project will have on their campaigns.

She argued: “Delaying the decision on pylon routes is clearly a tactic to limit the impact the EirGrid project will have on the local and European elections for the government parties. “However, the cat is already out of the bag. People who might possibly be affected are already aware of the proposed routes for these pylons and delaying the decision is not going to remove this issue from their memories for the period surrounding the elections.”

Councils up in arms over Irish Water Continued from front page: Mayo councilor Gerry Murray has called on Minister Phil Hogan and Irish Water CEO John Tierney to resign over attempts to justify such large consultants’ fee.

To add to the pain business owners in towns like Ballina and Westport will face rate hikes to bring them into line with Mayo county council “standards”.

Earlier this week, the Public Expenditure and Reform Minister Brendan Howlin confirmed that Irish Water will be brought “fully” into Freedom of Information. “All the documents pertaining to Irish Water should be available to public scrutiny,” he said at a press briefing.

Irish Water have insisted that it awarded all of its contracts in line with EU rules on procurement. It also noted that it wanted to ensure transparency and value for money throughout the setting up process.

North West counts cost of storm/flood damage debris washed in from the coast.

It is feared there will be a large cost involved in restoring the farmland to a workable state.

In Belmullet, the sea wall was breached in places along the Shore Road and Quay Road.

Locals are afraid that if a tide similar to that seen on the Friday were to happen again, the entire wall would collapse.

A wall collapsed at Faulmore beach in Blacksod as a result of the storms and floods.

A man from Blacksod had to be rescued from his car by firemen after driving into deep tidal water on a low-lying road. Bill Heffron from Aughleam got into difficulty while trying to get away from his storm thrashed home but raised the alarm using his mobile phone when he got into difficulty.

People in Geesala were cut off for a time on Friday as the tide came across the Bangor Road making it impassable, and there was significant flooding between Drum and Ellybay. Following the extended period of stormy weather locals in the Belmullet area are calling for remedial works in the Doolough, Dooyork and Doohoma areas in order to lessen the effects of erosion on the coastline. The regular planting of bent grass which survives salt water has been suggested.

HILE the north-west in general suffered as a result of the recent storms and floods county Mayo, in particular has been badly hit with unprecedented levels of coastal erosion that will take a long time to repair. While cleanup operations are under way, residents of north Mayo and West Mayo are starting to count the costs. The almost complete destruction of the famed Bertra Beach, near Murrisk, Westport, and its car park and entrance road, was just one example of the devastation. An old stone hump-backed bridge at Carraholly was completely washed away on the Friday. Further north the destruction was apparent from Blacksod to

Belmullet to Doohoma, while further inland, Ballina is dealing with the aftermath of the Moy having burst its banks.

Everywhere, smooth pristine beaches were transformed as large boulders and debris were washed inland on the Thursday and Sunday night. Also, land in areas of Tallaghbawn, Doohoma Head and Doolough have been rendered unworkable such has been the extent of the damage. There was extensive damage from the ferry to Doohoma Head as waters came on to farmland.

There have been calls on the local authorities to ‘come to the rescue of local farmers’ as good farming land in Doohoma and Geesala had been ruined after stone, rubble and

The town’s Ice House hotel experienced only minor flood damage to the lower ground floor, despite its close proximity to the river.

Ballina Town Councillor Willie Nolan reported several feet of floodwater in the town where the Moy burst its banks. According to Cllr Nolan, the breach was caused by a combination of high tides, high wind speeds and falling rain. Clean-up efforts are continuing in the town and debris is being removed from the slipway at The Quay.

30 jobs gone with closure of Elphin nursing home

BAD news on the jobs front for Roscommon last week with the announcement that thirty jobs are set to be lost with the impending closure of the Fearna Nursing Home in Elphin.

The closure is a major blow to the locality and marks the beginning of a difficult New Year for workers.

News of the closure was announced to staff and residents on Monday morning.

It is understood that the

nursing home is due to wind up operations by the end of March. Thirty full time positions will be lost at the facility.

This will be a major blow to the Elphin area where a number of suppliers will also be hit by the closure.

Owner of the Fearna Nursing Home group, Boyle man Martin O’ Dowd, said he was left with “little choice” as the old convent building, which housed the Elphin

facility, dated to the 1840s and could not meet the new building regulations. “This is an orderly wind down and has nothing to do with the quality of care; we just cannot meet the new building regulations.

The fact that the old convent building, which dates to 1840, is a listed building also poses problems,” explained Mr O’Dowd.

The new building regulations include stipulations about ensuites for every room, which posed a difficulty for Fearna in Elphin.

Mr O’Dowd stressed that the closure was not due to “a quality of care issue” and the residents were very happy in the nursing home.

The nursing nurse currently facilitates eighteen residents who must now relocate or find alternative accommodation by the end of March. It is expected that a number of residents will relocate to the sister Fearna Nursing Home, Fearna Manor Nursing Home in Castlerea. While residents have until the end of March to relocate, it is expected that operations may in fact wind

down in about two to three weeks.

The old convent building at Bishop Street, Elphin has operated as a nursing home for the past nineteen years.

The Meadowlands Nursing Home in Cloonfad, which was also part of the Fearna group closed last July. Owner Martin O’Dowd stressed that the Fearna Manor Nursing Home in Castlerea would continue to operate as normal.

Sheep savaged by family pets in Leitrim

Two in-lamb ewes were mauled to death by dogs in the Drumshanbo/Leitrim Village area last week.

W

E’VE experienced it many time before – the horrific consequences of people not controlling their pets. Two in-lamb ewes were mauled to death and more animals were left in a distressed state after a dog attack in the Drumshanbo-Leitrim Village area last week.

A farmer made the shocking discovery on January 6 and found two dogs, believed responsible for the attack, in the vicinity of his flock.

The dogs were traced to a nearby home and were beloved family pets.

The farmer who owns the flock said he did

not want to be named but he urged all dog owners to ensure that their animals are not roaming free, especially as sheep are starting the lambing season.

IFA Leitrim County Chairperson Pat Gilhooly has echoed this call stating that sheep flocks are already under enough stress because of ongoing bad weather.

“It is essential that all dogs are kept under control and we are asking dog owners in both rural and urban areas to keep their dogs tied or in kennels during lambing season,” he said. “If anyone sees stray dogs in or around farm land immediately contact the owner or the warden. Don’t just ignore it. Dogs can do an awful lot of damage and it’s totally unacceptable to see situations like this occurring again this year.”

Co Leitrim Veterinary Officer, James Madden, described the situation as very distressing.

“Dog owners have a responsibility to keep their pets under control at all times. It doesn’t matter how well you think you know your dog, you may not think that it has the potential to be a killer, but the fact remains that when dogs come together in a pack they hunt and will cause damage like this,” he told the Leitrim Observer following the attack.

“This sort of attack not only causes physical damage to the animals targeted by the dogs, but the stress of being attacked can also affect other animals in the flock, causing them to spontaneously abort their lambs. The losses to farmers can be huge and it is important that dogs are not allowed to roam loose,” he said.

Premiere of Sligo film in United States this month

PEOPLE from Sligo will be interested to know that a film shot on location in the county will begin a tour of the world's premier film festivals in the United States later this month.

Meantime, its main star, Brendan Gleeson, will take to the stage in the Hawks Well

Theatre later this week to show his musical prowess.

The 100 minute film ''Calvary'' was filmed at Strandhill, Easkey and in Rush, Co Dublin.

Some scenes in the black comedy featuring ?

Brendan Gleeson were shot in Sligo town centre.

But it is unclear if those have been included in the version which will have its premiere at the prestigious Sundance Festival in Utah in the United States later this month. ''Calvary'' tells the story of a priest with a death sentence on his head after he is threatened during Confession and given seven days to put his affairs in order.

The Director is John Michael McDonagh, who also had Gleeson on board in his bigscreen breakthrough comedy ''The Guard.''

The film will also feature in the main Berlin and Dublin film festivals in February before its general screen release in Ireland, the UK and Australia in April.

The co-stars in ''Calvary'' include Chris O'Dowd, Kelly Reilly, Aidan Gillen and comedian Dylan Moran.

Actress Orla O'Rourke is Zambian born but very well known to Irish TV audiences from her regular role as Sinead Kelly in ''The Clinic.'' Other cast members include Canadian Marie-Josee Croze, who previously played a Dutch assassin in Steven Spielberg's 2005 film on the Munich Olympics massacre of Israeli athletes.

Gleeson's son Domhnall also stars in ''Calvary'' along with other Irish actors and TV stars who Ronan Wilmot, Pat Shortt and David McSavage.

Trek 4 Hospice El Camino de Santiago

ayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation is looking for walking and adventure enthusiasts to embark on the first stage of The Camino de Santiago.

On April 26th 2014, travel with us for one week to France and Northern Spain to trek one of the oldest ‘Pilgrim’ routes in the world – El Camino de Santiago de Compostela.

Pilgrims from all over the world have walked the Camino de Santiago for centuries, following the various paths on their way to Santiago de Compostela and the tomb of St. James. Today, whether walking the Camino for religious reasons, to find yourself, take a break or simply get back to nature, the Camino is a trip of a life time, a unique experience that inspires many, even after the journey is over.

The unique element of this fundraising trip is that unlike many other fundraising treks, you start The Camino at the beginning rather than trekking the last 100kms. You can treat this trip as the start of a journey, continuing The Camino at a time and pace that suits you.

We will spend five days walking The French Way or Camino Francés. This is the most famous route of the Camino de Santiago. The French Way starts in St Jean Pied de Port in France, crosses the Pyrenees and finishes in the city of Pamplona, world famous for its Bull Run, San Fermín. T

he famous Canadian astronaut who put Ireland on the map with the first-ever tweet from space ‘as Gaeilge’ last year, arrived in Ireland recently.

Tourism Ireland is hoping that he will help put Ireland ‘on the map’ again – this time as a top destination for holidays in 2014 and beyond. The

organisation has enlisted his help to showcase some of our top visitor attractions and experiences over the coming five days.

Former International Space Station commander Colonel Chris Hadfield was at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition. He and his wife Helene spent

several days as ‘tourists’ – visiting places like Croke Park and the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin.

His itinerary also included Donegal (where he learned ‘cúpla focal’ from some local schoolchildren) and the spectacular Inishowen Peninsula, the starting point of the Wild Atlantic Way.

Tourism Ireland will create three short films of Hadfield’s five-day visit – featuring different themes like Gaelic games, our spectacular scenery and major visitor attractions.

These films will then be shared by Tourism Ireland with its Facebook fans (almost 2 million) and Twitter followers (109,000+) around the world, shining a spotlight on some of the many great things to see and do on a holiday in Ireland; the films will also be shared with influential international travel and lifestyle media, through an extensive publicity and PR campaign.

the awards – which recognise and commend the Dutch journalists in attendance, all of whom have written or broadcast about holidays on the island of Ireland during 2013. Prizes were awarded on the night in five different categories, including ‘Special Interest’, ‘Photography’, ‘Papers’, ‘Lifestyle’ and ‘Blogger of the Year’. Tourism Ireland thanked the members of the media for their efforts through the year in helping to highlight Ireland as a fantastic destination for Dutch holidaymakers.

The event was also an excellent opportunity for Tourism Ireland to launch the Wild Atlantic Way – Ireland’s first long-distance driving route, stretching from the Inishowen Peninsula in Co Donegal to Kinsale in Co Cork – to the influential journalists.

tudents with dyslexia & dyspraxia will be given an opportunity to avail of technological tools to make learning easier at an Assistive Technology camp to be held at Sligo IT this month.

The students will learn about assistive technology, software and tools which help people with disabilities to access computers, phones and other mainstream technologies.

The camp will run in Sligo IT, on the 18th of January, from 10am – 1pm for primary school students and 2pm – 5pm for secondary school students. The camps are aimed at students with dyslexia and dyspraxia, a condition that affects coordination and fine motor skills, including writing.

The students will learn about text-to-

speech software, which reads text on a computer screen back to them, and dictation software such as Dragon Naturally Speaking, which types as they talk. Parents will have a chance to see the technology for themselves on the Friday evening in Sligo town, where UrAbility will host a free parents info evening.

The AT camp is being organised by UrAbility.com, founders James Northridge and Gerard Gallagher will be on hand, who themselves have dyslexia. Our experience is that AT is a major boost to students’ selfconfidence and learning. This AT camp in Sligo is an opportunity to share our expertise and allow students to Embrace their Ability.

James believes that Assistive Technology will

be the great equaliser for students with disabilities going forward. We need to embrace this new technology and make it open to all. A big challenge for students with disabilities is attitude. We need an attitudinal change when it comes to services for people with disabilities and Assistive technology can be that change. At the end of the day, it is not students’ impairments that disable them but the people they deal with and the environment around them. We hope that the camps will empower students to tap into the educational system and use the abilities they have. They will see that there is nothing that isn’t achievable. New Irish website aims to give struggling families a lift in 2014

brand new Irish website aimed at helping families achieve financial freedom has been set up by a mother and son duo from Co. Kilkenny. Geraldine and David Carroll came up with the idea for Winter Wisdom (http://www.winterwisdom.com) in late 2013 and on Sunday morning they launched the site to the general public. “We’ve endured and witnessed a lot of hardship throughout our lives, particularly over the last few years with what’s happened to the economy. Fracking: Cameron Offers Councils Drill Money

inancial rewards worth £1.7m a year will be given to councils which give permission for fracking projects in their areas.

David Cameron said the

Government was "going all out for shale" as he announced the move, which campaign groups opposed to the controversial method of extracting the gas from deep

underground described as bribes.

The Prime Minister has declared that shale gas exploration is part of his long-term economic plan and says local authorities that allow

drilling will receive 100% of the business rates collected from the scheme - double the current 50%.

Whitehall officials estimate that could be worth £1.7m extra a year for each site a council agrees.

Shale exploration firms will also pay out £100,000 when a test well is fracked and 1% of revenues, a deal which could in total be worth up to £10m.

However, local community representatives say this is not enough in the face of the vast profits that stand to be made by the energy firms and the damage that would be caused to local areas.

Mr Cameron's announcement comes as the French energy giant Total has announced it will invest millions with a 40% interest in two shale gas exploration licences in the UK. Mr Cameron said: "A key part of our long-term economic plan to secure Britain's future is to back businesses with better infrastructure. "That's why we're going all out for shale. It will mean more jobs and opportunities for people, and economic security for our country."

In a vast hanger on the outskirts of Shanghai, the banging of hammers and screeching of drills indicates a company in a hurry.

This is where the headquarters of Comac China's answer to Airbus and Boeing. The vast campus forms the heart of China's attempt to take on the aviation giants.

Comac was only founded five years ago and yet it has already produced one passenger jet and, within a decade, it hopes to be selling planes to western airlines including Ryanair and British Airways.

Jack Lee, a Comac executive, says: "This is a really exciting event for China. This is the first time in China's history that we have manufactured (passenger) aircraft by Chinese people.

"It's a challenge ahead of us. We already laid out our plan. The schedule is tight. We must fight for this schedule and fight for this milestone."

olice have recovered 140kg of cocaine which had been shipped in banana crates by accident to Aldi supermarkets in Germany. Workers at five stores around Berlin found the drugs among packages of the fruit on Monday, in what is being called a "logistical mistake" by smugglers. Police spokesman Stefan Redlich said: "Employees of supermarkets in Berlin and Brandenburg found boxes that should have been filled with bananas, but in the boxes had been more than 100kg (of) cocaine." "For Berlin this is the biggest drug find in the last 10 or 20 years. Usually you find such amounts only in the harbours like Hamburg.

For Berlin this is extraordinary," he said.

Cockroach Burrows Into Sleeping Man's Ear

A

man in Australia had to be rushed to hospital in terrible pain after a large cockroach crawled into his ear as he slept, and an attempt to suck it out with a vacuum cleaner failed.

Medical treatment initially only caused the inchlong insect to burrow further into the head of Hendrik Helmer.

The unwelcome invader was eventually extracted by a doctor with forceps, but only after Mr Helmer had endured the unpleasant sensation of it being in the "throes of death-twitching".

His ordeal began in the early hours of Wednesday morning when he was woken by a sharp pain in his right ear, according to Australian TV. He said: "I was hoping it was not a poisonous spider ... I was hoping it didn't bite me."

As the pain got worse, Mr Helmer said he tried

to suck the insect out with a vacuum cleaner before squirting water in his ear.

"Whatever was in my ear didn't like it at all," he told the broadcaster.

With the pain now excruciating, his flatmate rushed him to hospital where a doctor put oil down the ear canal.

But this only forced the two centimetre cockroach to crawl in deeper.

Mr Helmer, from Darwin, said: "Near the 10 minute mark ... somewhere about there, he started to stop burrowing but he was still in the throes of death twitching."

The doctor then pulled the insect out of his ear.

"She (the doctor) said, 'You know how I said a little cockroach, that may have been an underestimate'," he said.

"They said they had never pulled an insect this large out of someone's ear."

Mr Helmer said he would not be taking any added precautions when sleeping, although friends of his said they were so concerned over his experience that they had begun going to bed with headphones on.

Cockroaches are among the hardiest insects on the planet.

They are capable of surviving for long periods on little food and can even tolerate high doses of radiation.

They will eat almost anything, and some species can produce over 20,000 young in their lifetime.

Famous for their hissing, cockroaches can reach nine centimetres in length, although most species are much smaller.

Woody Allen's former girlfriend Mia Farrow and their son Ronan have criticised the lifetime achievement award he was given at the Golden Globes.

When the director’s tribute began to start, the actress, who had been tweeting throughout the show, stopped and said on the microblogging site: "Time to grab some ice cream & switch over to #GIRLS." The former couple's son Ronan was more explicit, saying on Twitter: “Missed the Woody Allen tribute - did they put the part where a woman publicly confirmed he molested her at age 7 before or after Annie Hall?”

His message was believed to be referring to Allen and Farrow’s adopted daughter Dylan.

There were allegations in 1992 that Allen inappropriately touched her as a seven-yearold.

The court case was eventually dropped and Allen’s spokesman denied the allegations.

Farrow also retweeted her son’s message and they both retweeted messages that referred to a Vanity Fair article in which Dylan stood by the allegations.

"I’m scared of him (Allen), his image," she told a journalist. "I have never been asked to testify. If I could talk to the seven-year-old Dylan, I would tell her to be brave, to testify."

Farrow and Allen had a 12-year relationship but split in 1992, when she discovered he was having an affair with Farrow's adopted daughter from another marriage, Soon-Yi Previn, now Allen's wife.

The first is Internal Warmboard Insulation. Certified Tradesmen fix an insulating board to the inside of the external walls of the building. An example of this would be a house built in the 50′s, with no external wall insulation. To meet current ‘Part L’ Building Regulations, you would need to add 92.5mm of Internal Wall Insulation. If there was 50mm of insulation already on the wall, you would only need to add 42.5mm top-up. By choosing contractors registered with SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland), home owners can avail of the Better Energy Home Scheme, which provides substantial grants towards the cost of works. One major advantage of warmboard insulation is that you are no longer heating the walls of the property. There are various types of internal warmboard, such as Kingspan Kooltherm and

damaged, less than is necessary or incorrectly installed. For example if you have a thin or worn layer of insulation it would be beneficial to replace it or improve its performance by adding another layer.

EasyBoard. The second method of insulating Cavity Block Structures is External Wall Insulation, also known as an External Wrap. In this case, the contractor fixes dense insulation panels to the exterior of a building using a bonding agent and mechanical fixings. On top of this there is a reinforcing mortar layer with glass fibre mesh and a primer layer and a decorative render finish that is available in many different colours.

Cavity Wall Structure If a building’s walls are constructed using an outer leaf solid block, a cavity (normally 100mm) and an inner leaf solid block, then it is known as a Cavity Wall Structure. There is an additional retrofit insulation method in this case known as Cavity Wall Pumped Insulation. A series of small holes are drilled in the structure and a bonded bead is pumped into the wall. The advantages of this method is that there is minimal disruption to the interior/exterior of the building.

Roof Insulation An un-insulated or poorly insulated roof costs you money and harms the environment.

Case Study Mary has a four bedroom detached house 150 m in size. She has an annual heating bill of €1,600.

Mary previously had 100mm of fibreglass insulation in her attic but decided to upgrade the insulation in her attic to the recommended 300mm following advice from SEAI and the various contractors she rang. As well as resulting in more comfortable

living conditions, this simple low cost measure now saves Mary over €250 every year on her home heating bill. Mary was also able to secure grant aid from the Better Energy Homes scheme to help her with the cost of this. Typical costs for this type of upgrade are approx. €700 - €1,000 (excluding grant).

In any case, it really doesn't feel like the first day of spring, and despite the snowdrops and the crocuses which have appeared, the rush of spring energy is still a bit away.

If you have damp or heavy soil, you may well have a garden with a good supply of rushes. If you do, it's simple and fun to make a Saint Brigid's cross. The Countdown is on for Junk Kouture 2014

rtistic and creative secondary school pupils across Ireland are being encouraged to get their hands on industrial, electrical, commercial and domestic waste products and turn them into pieces of fashion art as the deadline for entries to the 2014 Junk Kouture Recycled Fashion competition proudly supported by Bank of Ireland and the European Recycling Platform (ERP) looms closer – Jan 31st.

Last year’s competition saw St. Mary’s Secondary School pupils Ta Naw Naw, Chit Mya Noe and Ta Si Si reach the grand final of the competition with their glamorous design Say Mo Wah which was awarded the Red Carpet Award which saw Ta Naw Naw model the creation on the Red Carpet at the Royal Film Premiere of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom last month in London. It was a very successful year for Mayo in the competition and Junk Kouture is encouraging more pupils from the county to take part this year.

Created in 2010 by entrepreneurs Elizabeth Curran and Troy Armour from Co. Donegal, the Junk Kouture competition has seen thousands of teenagers’ work submitted over the past three years, with some spectacular and awe-inspiring pieces gracing the competition’s regional and national catwalks. Last year the Grand Final was attended by over 2000 spectators in the Bord Gais Energy Theatre which saw Limerick Students ‘Ultra Violet Wash’ walk away with the top prize of €2,500 for their school, €1000 worth of IT equipment, €500 cash and a trip to the Cannes Film Festival.

This year Junk Kouture is proudly supported by Bank of Ireland and ERP, the only pan-European compliance scheme for electronic waste and battery recycling. The catwalk shows which will take place to see who proceeds to the grand final will take place in theatres regionally throughout March and promise to be unforgettable shows, for the audience let alone the contestants, if last year’s competition is anything to go by – audience members dancing in the aisles, fog horns sounding for support and audience sing-alongs to classic hits to name a few of the highlights!

ccording to vehicle sales figures issued by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), Ford has, again, topped the commercial vehicle sales charts, a feat the company has achieved for 24 of the last 25 years.

Commercial vehicle sales figures for 2013 show that Ford sold 2,541 units, ahead of VW (2,079 units) and Renault (1,286 units).

A key part of Ford's van sales success is the iconic Transit, which has been a top seller in Ireland since it first arrived in 1965.

In 2013, Transit was again the top-selling model in Ireland with 1,402 units sold, ahead of the second-placed VW Caddy (1,328).

Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director, Ford Ireland, said: "Irish van drivers and fleet operators love our vans and it is heartening to see that we have secured the top spot again in the 2013 sales chart...

"Unlike the car market where there was a drop in sales, the commercial vehicle market managed to achieve modest growth of just 4.6% in 2013.

"It has long been accepted that this market is a good indicator of the general state of the economy, so on that basis, these figures tally with some commentators who have said the economy is due to improve during 2014.

"It is thanks to our great value tailored packages that Ford again took the lion's share of sales in the van market in 2013, outpacing the market growth to achieve an increase of 11.5% on our 2012 sales.

"In fact, there has never been a better time to buy a Ford commercial, with a low rate 3.9% APR available across the van range. And, unlike some of our competitors, we offer a five-year payback period, which helps to keep monthly repayments more manageable for cash-strapped operators."

Ford's line up of commercial vehicles will be expanded during 2014, with the imminent arrival of the new Transit Connect (International Van of the Year for 2014); the new Transit two-tonne arriving in April; and the compact new Ford Transit Courier van, which arrives in May.

Farmers try to get around quotas with 'black milk' sales A cross-border investigation is under way into a 'black milk' market after it emerged farmers in the South have been trying to smuggle their over-quota produce into the Northern market.

The Department of Agriculture has confirmed it is investigating the practice, as are the authorities in Northern Ireland as well as the Foods Standards Agency (FSA), which has warned of the serious health implications of consuming milk that is not properly stored.

The Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association (ICMSA) earlier this month said individuals caught selling black milk to unregistered buyers faced "savage fines" and warned that individuals could not be allowed go "outside" the system.

Before Christmas, Ulster Farmers Union president Harry Sinclair said the practice by "unscrupulous individuals" threatened the integrity of the entire dairy industry.

Earlier this month, Bord Bia figures revealed that Irish dairy exports were worth over €3bn to the economy last year while the total value of the Irish food and drink market is up 40 per cent since 2009.

Industry experts said the

black milk market could be a result of the hugely successful dairy production year enjoyed

by Irish farmers, who are desperate to offload surplus milk ahead of the March deadline for milk quota production.

The quota -- an EU-set limit on the amount of milk a farmer can produce -- sees 'super levies' of 28.65c per litre imposed on over-surplus milk. The ICMSA, the State's specialist dairy farm organisation, estimates that Ireland is currently running around two per cent over its national quota and industry sources said that could result in a levy in excess of €30m.

However, with milk quotas set to be lifted in 2015, farming groups argue it is understandable that dairy producers increase production in preparation for next year.

ICMSA president John Comer said he "recognised" the difficult position farmers were in but said the integrity of the industry was crucial given the figures from Bord Bia. "Nothing can be allowed interfere with the reputation that we all have so carefully built up and worked to maintain. Individuals cannot be allowed go 'outside' our system of carefully supervised and monitored buyers," he was

quoted as saying in the Sunday Independent.

Two months ago PSNI officers seized a truck in Newry that was transporting several containers full of milk, understood to have been produced in the South. A 35year-old man was also arrested during the seizure and has since been released on

bail pending further investigations. The unrefrigerated containers of milk were destroyed.

A spokesperson for the FSA, which is leading the crossborder investigation, said there were "obvious food safety issues" with milk smuggled in unrefrigerated containers.

Take a time-out If you're starting to feel angry or threatened, it's a good idea to take a time-out to collect your thoughts.

"Ideally we give our kids time-outs so they learn to manage their feelings; we need to do the same for ourselves," Glovin says. "Remind yourself that you are an adult and your thoughts are valid."

It's OK to disengage and say, "I don't think this is a good conversation to have—I'm getting too worked up."

Control your reaction Much as we would like to, we can't control how other people behave— but we can control how we react.

"Family relationships fall back on old habits, so someone might try to goad you by saying, ‘You're too sensitive,'" Glovin says. "Take a moment. Is it true? Do you agree?" If not, recognize that—and that it might be the other person's issue.

By reacting differently than you might have in the past, she says, you're changing the family dynamic—and maybe pushing the other person to react differently too.

Avoid labels A person and their politics are not the same thing. "You have to recognize that people are more than their political beliefs," Jennifer says.

It's normal to disagree It may help to know that arguments aren't necessarily a sign that your family is dysfunctional.

"If you are willing to get into any depth of a relationship with anyone and be genuine, you will eventually run into areas in which the two of you don't see eye to eye," says Simon Rego, PsyD, director of psychology training at Montefiore Medical Center, in the Bronx, N.Y. The same is true, of course, in family relationships, he says.

Don't drink too much Jennifer S. (not her real name), an editor and mom from New Jersey, learned this lesson the hard way when her liberal family teamed up on her beloved—but conservative—stepdad during a boozy post9/11 argument that ended with him leaving the house.

Although there usually is less conflict in superficial relationships, Rego says, "You don't get the richness of human connection."

But a recent vacation was a great success, she says, largely because they avoided getting into touchy subjects after having a few drinks.

She didn't witness the scene, but knew it took a while for the family to heal or even dare to get together.

Recognize your triggers As you prepare for your next family gathering, think about what's happened in the past, and also about what others do that triggers you to react, says Julie Glovin, a clinical social worker from Worcester, Mass.

"What feelings come up when you get triggered?" Glovin says. "Do you have a history of not being validated in your thoughts? Not heard?

What happens to you physically and behaviorally? Does your stomach hurt? Do you want to cry? Do you reach for another glass of wine?"

Don't get caught up in thinking, "they're stubborn or they're racist or they're sexist or they're homophobic or they're so righty or they're so lefty," Rego says. "They get put in a box, so if you're in a different one, you only see difference."

Agree to disagree Take a look at the dinner-table debate and know that trying to change someone else's mind is pretty much always a lost cause, Glovin says. "Are people trying to share information to help each other be better informed, or are we trying to change belief systems?" she says.

"The latter is futile—and ultimately people are looking for their own beliefs to be validated. Agreeing to disagree can be a way to validate and defuse the situation."
