Welcome to College for Kids!

The College for Kids program at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City stimulates and nurtures the minds of young people ages 3–17 with 186 learning options. The 8-week program is designed for highly motivated students to explore an area of interest; parents should read descriptions carefully to find the best fit. Most classes are formatted in a week of 4 or 5 half days. One week, Kids on Campus week – July 21-25, offers an optional supervised lunch break (bring your brown bag lunch) and lets you choose morning and afternoon classes for full days of fun (see page 18).

Amazing Alphabet Animal Adventure (Ages 3–4)

Ants and apples, enormous elephants, the octopus and the ostrich! Meet the fun family of vowels—those letters that show up in every word. Silly stories, giggly games, fun crafts, and five fascinating animals help us get acquainted with all five vowels. You’ll go on an adventure with Abby Alligator, discover a hiding “I”, and laugh at the Umbrella Bird’s umbrella.

Stories, games, music and take-home art guide you on an adventure with characters like a white rabbit, a jelly bean bunny, and a silly brown bear. You’ll do the Rainbow Pokey and the Color Crayon March and make things like a fly-catching frog and a flying bee.

Bonkers Over Bugs (Ages 3–4)

Bugs, bugs, bugs, oh my! Busy bees, silly spiders, quick crickets, and beautiful butterflies come to visit as we listen to bug stories, sing songs, and “buggy down” to creative movement activities.

Go on a nature walk in search of bugs then get creative making totally buggin’ art projects like a spider mask and your very own insect collage. Learn fun facts through lots of handson projects, create your own bug rock, observe insects, and have lots of buggy fun.

Big, Beautiful Ocean (Ages 3–4)

Jump into a week of ocean life as you discover seahorses, sharks, crabs, and brightly colored fish. You’ll have a splashy time playing lively games like Sharks and Barracudas, making music, and creating something special every day while learning about the ocean. Add finger plays, great stories, and a little science for extra fun. Bring a 2-liter bottle to class to make an “ocean in a bottle.”

Enter the amazing and beautiful world of the butterfly. Do you know what a Butterfly looks like when its young? Make a project to show how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. Treasure Hunters— A Pirate Adventure (Ages 4–6)

Become a treasure hunter as we search for the hidden treasures of pirates. Our adventure takes place on our own ‘island’ where we’ll create a pirate ship and pirate maps to lead us to lost treasures. Jump into a week of hands-on fun as you journey to the amazing rainforest filled with exploding color and exciting adventures. Each day you will make new discoveries about the plants, animals, and foods of the rainforest as we work with art, music, games, stories, and movement. Make cool animal projects like a fabulous frog and a “moving” snake. Build your own rainforest in a jar, create a rainforest recipe book, and try new fruits. Every day is a play day—in the rainforest!

Explore all kinds of fun and messy art in this week of hands-on discovery. You’ll paint, shape, squish, print, sculpt, and glue—and still have time for stories, songs, and movement. Moms and dads: this week of art exploration develops fine motor skills and encourages creativity to flourish. Your young artist’s experience includes collage, painting, printmaking, wood-scrap sculpture, and more.

Dancing Feet Creative Movement (Ages 4–6)

Spin, stretch, walk, slide—your body wants to move. Let your feet tell stories as you explore different kinds of dance like jazz, ballet, and modern. You’ll learn to stretch like a dancer and balance your body as you leap and twirl. You’ll move to different kinds of music as you create your own dances and make up some with the group. No dance experience is needed. Wear comfortable clothes for moving (no jeans please), and dance shoes (bare feet are fine too).

Registration begins March 21 and continues throughout the summer. Take as many classes as you like. For additional registration forms, make copies or download them from the website. Full payment is due at the time of registration by credit card/debit card, check, or cash.

• Remember that you must use your child’s NMC ID and PASSWORD when using online registration, not your own. Every child who has ever taken a class at NMC has an NMC ID.

Many classes fill quickly, so early enrollment is encouraged. Please register by June 9 or at least seven days prior to the start date of your course. Some classes with low enrollment after June 10 may have to be cancelled.

When registering, please note the dates, times, and locations of your classes. You will be notified if changes occur or a class is filled.

Written confirmation will be sent only if you include a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

• If your child has taken classes before at NMC, but you don’t know his/her login information, contact the NMC Technology Help Desk, (231) 995-3020. Once they verify your child’s identity, they can give you your child’s NMC ID and Password.

• If your child is a brand new student, an NMC ID and Password are assigned when you create a new account.

• If you can’t remember whether your child has taken classes before, call the Help Desk (231) 995-3020 or Extended Education (231) 995-1700.

• Your credit card is charged upon completion of the online registration process. If you do not pay at the time of registration, the class(es) in your cart will be dropped.

Refunds A 100% refund will be given if a request is made at least five business days prior to the class start date (call 995-1700) or if a class is cancelled. If you must drop a class 2 to 4 business days prior to the class start date, you are eligible for a 50% credit toward another College for Kids class, valid for one year.

Classes dropped the business day prior to class (usually the Friday before) are not eligible for refund or partial credit. See full refund policy at nmc.edu/kids.

Financial aid scholarships Limited funds are available to assist families meeting low-income requirements. To receive an application, please call Extended Education at (231) 995-1700.

1. Financial aid awards typically cover half the cost of each class for a maximum of three classes per child (as funds allow).

Awarded amount does not exceed $60 per class.

2. To apply, please submit: • completed financial aid application • registration form • payment (half of the cost of each class).

3. Upon receipt of all three of the above, students will be enrolled in requested classes. Please call the EES office 5 days after submitting to learn the status of your request. Applicants who are not awarded financial aid can pay the remaining cost or cancel their reserved spaces at least one week prior to the class and receive a full refund of the amount paid. ­
