On The Cover

NMC is more than a college; it’s a legacy. From George and Clara McManus, to NMC Trustee Chris Bott and his granddaughters Juliana and Serena Bott, the stories are deeply rooted and extend into the future. Jonathan Bott and his wife, Genna, share memories of growing up at NMC, attending BBQs and College for Kids, and earning their degrees. Now, their daughters attend College for Kids. Last summer, Juliana and Serena took America’s Boating Course at the Great Lakes Campus, in a building named for great-grandparents, George & Clara McManus. For more on this family’s legacy of learning, see page 11.

A LEGACY OFLEARNINGATNMC

The McManus and Bott families' legacies at Northwestern Michigan College are deeply-rooted, demonstrating steadfast service and transformative impact.

George and Clara McManus, pillars of public service, left a legacy of learning that continues to impact their family and community. George, an NMC trustee of twenty years and state senator, worked tirelessly to secure $8.2M in funding for NMC's Great Lakes Campus, while he and Clara established a scholarship fund for future generations.

NMC Trustee Chris Bott (front cover) is an NMC alumnus, along with his six siblings, three children, and many nieces and nephews, earning their associates degrees. A long-time advocate and supporter of the college, Bott began his service on the NMC Board in 2015. He has served on the NMC Business Administration & Accounting Advisory Committee, as a founding member of the Munson Manor Hospitality House, as a member of the Munson Regional Healthcare Foundation, the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce -Athena Award Sub Committee, and the Member Service Sub Committee. Bott is a strong advocate for NMC's College for Kids program. His granddaughters, Juliana and Serena (front cover), have participated in College for Kids classes for many years.

Genna (McManus) Bott continues in the footsteps of her grandparents, George and Clara. She cherishes memories of family bike rides to NMC's BBQs. "NMC provides a quality education, a great stepping stone," Genna says, reflecting on her nursing degree. Both Genna and husband Jonathan Bott, son of Chris Bott, also value the college's affordability, which enabled them to graduate debt-free. Jonathan echoes these sentiments, praising NMC as a "gem in the community."

The NMC values instilled by George and Clara - learning, excellence, and opportunity - are passed down through generations. "We hope to pass along the value of learning," Genna emphasizes, while Jonathan stresses the abundance of opportunities available.

The McManus and Bott story is a testament to the enduring power of community and the transformative impact of education. Their legacy, built on dedication and vision, continues to shape NMC and inspire future generations.

ON

Dear Learners,

We are pleased to bring back a reimagined Campus Day on NMC’s Front Street (Main) Campus. This day of learning consists of three separate learning sessions (choose from over 40 options), time to connect over coffee and donuts, and a boxed lunch. Together, we’ll reconnect with familiar faces and forge new friendships as we explore new topics and learn about our region. This day is a celebration of connection, learning, and the vibrant spirit of our community.

Classes will be held at the Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center, the Health & Science Building, and Scholars Hall. A shuttle (thank you, BATA!) will be available to assist participants back and forth from Scholars Hall, about a five minute walk. Lunch will be available in both Scholars Hall and the Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center. Parking will be available and free in any of the lots on campus. Recommended parking lots will be marked with signage, and greeters will be stationed on the campus grounds. We’ll help you get where you want to go!

With much gratitude, this event is partially underwritten by our beloved lifelong learner, Jeane Poos, who made it her legacy to support lifelong learning through NMC Extended Education & Training. In 2023, Jeane passed away at the age of 102, a distinguished lifelong learner! Her bequest has underwritten a portion of the registration fee. A heartfelt thank you to Jeane and her family.

Why Choose an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC)?

ASCs provide a convenient, cost-effective alternative to hospitals, offering shorter wait times, personalized care, and specialized procedures. ASCs reduce expenses for patients, insurers and Medicare. Strict infection protocols help minimize risks, and most procedures allow patients to return home the same day.
