“I’ve taken several of Eleonora Hayes’s art classes, including Drawing Trees with Charcoal and Painting with Acrylics, and have enjoyed them very much. Eleonora is a wonderful artist and an inspiring teacher.

Many of the most controversial decisions being handed down by the Supreme Court are being brought under some provision of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Where does the free speech of one person or group conflict with the sensibilities or protections of another? What about “hate speech” or political speech that might incite violence? When does the “free exercise” of one’s religious beliefs effectively constitute the “establishment” of a religion? Debates and controversy rage on issues that touch our deeply-held religious and/or philosophical beliefs, such as abortion, war, sexual orientation, vaccinations, whether to preserve certain memorials, etc This class will discuss the scope of these First Amendment “freedoms” and some of the key U.S Supreme Court decisions on these issues. We will not try to solve these controversies but you will leave with a much better understanding of the backdrop and rationale for the cases interpreting this part of the Constitution. You will read the news about future cases decided by the Court with much keener insight. There will be some reading materials. Be prepared for lively class discussions!

Each week, we will explore a different element of music or expression to help construct songs. We’ll begin with a short lecture introducing a new topic—such as melody, rhythm, harmony, or storytelling—along with listening examples. Then, we’ll work together to explore the topic and create music collaboratively. A voluntary challenge will conclude the class, encouraging students to write a song incorporating the elements covered that week. In subsequent classes, the beginning of the session will be reserved for those who would like to share their compositions with the group. Conclude with an optional public performance, where students can showcase their original music.

Tiffani Wilke’s passion for science started young— she was the kid outside during storms! This early fascination led her to specialize in weather during a middle school science module, cementing her path to a career in meteorology. Holding an M.S. in Professional Meteorology and a B.S. in Atmospheric Science, Tiffani has taught at NMC since 2021.
What Tiffani loves most about teaching is watching students experience that “a-ha moment,” whether they are high schoolers or in their late 80s. For her, science is about progress and exploration, and its enrichment comes from sharing that sense of wonder with others.
