Tony’s Take

STILL TOO EARLY FOR LSU BASEBALL BUT MORE ACCURATE FOLLOWING COACH JOHNSON’S

AUGUST MEDIA SESSION

A few months ago, I wrote a piece where I thought LSU baseball would be in early February 2026. Of course it was before the transfer portal opened and the draft, where I mislabeled at least three 2025 Tigers who did not return for next year.

I was (easily) right on the outfield, the smallest major group of position players outside of catcher. Just five actual outfielders returned and that included the surprise return of Chris Stanfield, moving to left to go with All American Derek Curiel switching to center and experienced Jake Brown in right. The starting catcher was a no-brainer as well with starter Cade Arrambide returning as a sophomore and Edward Yamin IV from last year’s roster. One of nine freshmen, Omar Serno Jr. will be the third catcher.

Of the eight infielders, only All-Conference Monster Milam returns as a starter, at shortstop. But versatile John Pearson will probably start at 3rd while Swiss army knife Tanner Reaves takes Daniel Dickson’s place at second. That leaves first base with the biggest offensive hole. My thoughts are that the best hitter coming in as a freshman and the country’s number one first baseman, Mason Braun, will start there. Braun is also an outfielder, like Pearson, so there is some versatility with those players. But the only other listed first baseman is Edward Yamin IV, last year’s backup. However, six of the 2026 infielders are either freshmen or transfers and one of them, Zack Yorke, will probably be the DH and could get a look or two at first.

The lineup, then, here in mid-autumn, would have Curiel lead off in center, a left-handed hitter. He would be followed by in left by Stanfield, a righty. Then the switch-hitting Milam at short, lefty Brown in right and right-handed Pearson at third. Key reserve Tanner Reaves, another lefty bat, would follow at second, much like Dickson did last year. Six vets from a national championship LSU team. Cade Arrambide, a righty, would bat ninth. In the seven hole, I placed Yorke with his mighty left-handed swing while true freshman Braun would bat eight with another powerful left side stroke. Let these two freshmen marinate in the lower portion of the lineup until Coach sees enough from either or both to make an upwards lineup change.

Pitching is a sea of riches and potential. I penciled in veteran Cooper Williams as the weekday starting lefty, backed by righty Devin Sheerin. The Friday night starter would be sophomore William Schmidt, a right hander, with highly regarded lefty Ryla Smart as the left-handed choice. Saturday has righty Zac Cowan and another highly regarded transfer, lefty Danny Lachenmayer, as his foil while the Sunday pair would be Casan Evans, an experienced right-hander and lefty Ethan Plog.

As true closers I see are towering Mavrick Rizy, a Chase Shores type of hurler at 6 foot nine and a righthander while Grant Fontenot could be the other door slammer, another tall righty. Two pitchers are recovering from Tommy John surgery - Gavin Guidry and Marcos Paz - with Paz scheduled to return first. Both are right-handed. The others joining these two as middle relievers/developmental players/rehab cases are Reagan Ricken, Cooper Moore, Jaden Noot, Dax Dothe, Conner Benge and Zion Theophilus, all righties, and left-handers Santiago Garcia, Jonah Aase and D. J. Primeaux. Watch especially Noot and Ricken…the first because of so far unrealized potential, the latter because of a hunch.

With a couple of key coaching additions and a 39-player roster loaded with experience and potential, these Tigers are perhaps the best-balanced team in college baseball. Except for Curiel, there are no real superstar players to fawn over - just a great bunch of veterans, freshmen and transfers who know how to win and will definitely be in the chase for a ninth national championship. No egotistical Tennessee personas here and the Tigers know that the SEC still will be the strongest college baseball conference in 2026 once again. Speaking of egos and Tennessee, what timing for my sidebar to this column (below)! is coming at

Follow-up to this story. The October hiring of Tony Vitello to be the San Francisco Giants baseball manager leaves me with mixed feelings. On one hand, the SEC is getting rid of the biggest asshole in its coaching ranks. On the other hand, my home town baseball team is getting the biggest asshole from the ranks of SEC coaches. And one of my favorite players made the decision, Buster Posey.

The Giants can’t compete with the Dodgers’ money or recruiting moxie and they’ve exhausted the remaining use from two formerly successful formerly San Diego Padres skippers. But to bring in Vitello, who single-handedly made Tennessee the most despised SEC baseball program in just a few years because of his attitude and its reflection from his team, just doesn’t sit well with me. The Dodgers can hire a bot to coach their team; most others depend on a bit more. Not to denigrate the Dodgers managerial history but give me $600 million dollars and Southern California weather and lifestyles and I’ll bring you a championship as well. The Giants? Well, they finally got rid of their poorly located, poorly constructed Candlestick Park some years back and finally won three World Series at Oracle Park, then known as Pac Bell Park. But I predict that Vitello will not succeed in the City By the Bay. Such a conundrum! -0-

HOLIDAY CACTI CARE AND MAINTENANCE

As gardeners, we love gifting plants to all our gardening and non-gardening friends. Most think of poinsettia, but holiday cacti are popular gifts as well. You should be seeing plants available at garden centers and various retail stores during this time of year. Keep reading to learn more about them and how to care for these easy to grow plants.

All cacti are members of the family Cactaceae, which contain about 127 different genera and over 1,750 different species. The vast group can be broken down into two different types. When most people think of cacti, they think of the desert dwelling plants loaded with spines. These cacti are correctly termed “desert cacti”. However, there is a second group of cacti that grow on trees in tropical and sub-tropical forests. “Forest cacti” are known as epiphytes, which are plants that grow on other plants for support but are not parasitic. Because of this nature, forest cacti prefer partial shade locations. Holiday cacti are members of the forest cacti group. Both groups are native to the Americas.

Holiday cacti include the Thanksgiving cactus (Schlumbergera truncata), the Christmas cactus (S. x buckleyi), and the Easter cactus (S. gaertnerii). The orchid cactus (Epiphyllum ackermanii) is also grouped together with the holiday cacti. To distinguish Christmas and Thanksgiving cacti from Easter cacti, look at the flat stems that make up the shoots. Most of us may call these flattened stem segments leaves, but botanically speaking, cacti do not have leaves. The modified stems of these cacti are called phylloclades and they are filled with chlorophyll, hence the green color. They act just like the leaves in other plants. The flattened stem segments of Christmas and Thanksgiving cacti have a distinctive toothed edge (Thanksgiving cacti have sharper points) whereas Easter cacti exhibit a scalloped edge. They look the same except for time of year when they flower.

To properly care for any of these holiday cacti it is important to understand their native environment. These plants originated from the jungle region of the western hemisphere. As previously stated, they grew within the canopy of large trees. Do not place your cacti in an area that receives a lot of direct sunlight. Choose a location that receives bright but filtered light. An area with an eastern or southern facing window would work well. Watering these cacti will be a little different than watering a desert type cactus. Holiday cacti will need more water but be careful not to keep the soil wet. Consistently saturated soils contribute to root rot and poor plant health. Instead, add water to the soil until it drains out the bottom of the pot. Check the soil from time to time until you feel it completely dry from the tip of your finger to the first knuckle. This will indicate when to water the plant again. Use water-soluble fertilizer in the spring and summer to provide essential plant nutrients. A few insect problems may arise during the growing season, but applications of horticultural oil will provide effective control for most of the insect issues you will encounter.

One of the biggest issues facing Christmas cacti is second and subsequent year blooming. The plants available for sale at plant nurseries come out of commercial greenhouses and are forced to bloom for the holiday season. The new owner of a holiday cactus will need to do a few things to ensure blooms in the following season. The typical flowering season for holiday cacti is from November to January. Once flowering has finished let the plant rest but continue watering as the soil dries out. During the late spring and summer months you can move the plant outside to a filtered light location. Early fall is a crucial time for flower bud production because these plants are influenced by photo period. The shortening of days after the fall equinox signals to the plant that it’s time to produce flower buds. Be careful not to overwater during this time because stressful conditions may result in aborted flowers. If all goes well, the plant will start blooming again in late fall through the first of the year where you can enjoy and show it off for all to see!

Will Afton

Are you getting in the mood for the holidays yet? Is it chilly and rainy enough for you to begin getting into the holiday spirit? Have you been to the High School or College Playoff games? I have been watching Archbishop Shaw’s games on the computer. But, I already have my ticket for the State Playoff game in the Dome. I can hardly wait! Well, whether or not the temperature agrees with the calendar, we are almost in the middle of December! I know! Where has October and November gone??? I am at a loss at how quickly this quarter is flying by! I must be honest, I have been so busy with other things I have neglected painting Christmas gifts. I really need to start burning the midnight oil and get things done. There have been so many changes lately I guess it just has me a little out of whack. And this coming week will be just as challenging. Wish me luck!

Well, on to today’s little gem. I have added a new ornament to my Christmas tree. I have been wanting to paint this cutie for some time but as things go, I picked up the trio for safe keeping last October and forgot all about them. For the past 2 days I have been searching all over for them. I finally decided to open the container where I keep all my Chris Haughy surfaces and patterns I want to paint, and low and behold, all the way at the bottom of the container was the Gingerbread, Jester, and Snowman! I was so excited that I found them, I decided to paint the Gingerbread right away! I will paint the other two later this week. This was so much fun to paint! I probably would have been able to do more if my grandson’s cat would have left me alone. But, he demands attention, he sits there and meows until you reach down and pet him. I can barely hold him in my lap anymore, he weighs 21 pounds!

Well, that’s my craft for this time. What will your next project be?

Mine....I’ll be working on the other pieces to this set and a few other things. All fun things! Sincerely, Paula Johnson

In the heart of Louisiana, where football borders on religion and Saturday nights in Death Valley feel like their own distinct season, LSU made the kind of move that changes the temperature of an entire conference. After weeks of rumors, tight-lipped boosters, private jet trackers, message-board meltdowns, and one of the most chaotic coaching

searches in recent SEC memory, the Tigers have officially hired Lane Kiffin as the next head football coach at LSU.

The news didn’t just break — it detonated. By sunrise, Baton Rouge had already reached Mardi Gras-level energy. By noon, the national college football landscape had shifted. By evening, the SEC West (or whatever alignment we’re calling it now) had been put on notice: LSU isn’t interested in rebuilding — the Tigers are ready to reload.

A Hire Years in the Making

For all the twists and turns, this union always felt a little bit inevitable. Kiffin’s name has danced around Baton Rouge for years, popping up whenever the Tigers’ seat so much as warmed. His explosive offensive résumé, his swagger, his willingness to talk — and tweet — the Tigers’ language, and his uncanny ability to reinvent programs made him one of the most consistently intriguing names on LSU’s wish list.

When the coaching job opened this time, LSU athletic director Scott Woodward did what he’s built a reputation on: he swung big. The kind of big that gets fan bases buzzing and national pundits firing up emergency podcasts. The kind of big that changes narratives.

This hire wasn’t reactionary. It wasn’t desperate. It was deliberate. LSU wanted a proven head coach who could recruit with fire, coach with fearlessness, and score in neon lights — and Kiffin fit all three criteria.

Offensive Fireworks Incoming

If there’s one thing Lane Kiffin guarantees, it’s points. Lots of them. Fast.

LSU fans have long craved an identity built on offensive aggression — the kind that struck gold during the 2019 national championship season but never fully carried over. Kiffin brings that identity in spades. His offense is modern, adaptable, and merciless. It pressures defenses vertically and horizontally. It allows quarterbacks to play fast and free. It prioritizes mismatches and mismatches create touchdowns.

Simply put: LSU just hired one of the brightest offensive minds in the sport.

The Tigers already boast a roster dripping with athleticism, blue-chip skill players, and young quarterbacks itching for the keys to an SEC offense. Plug that talent into Kiffin’s system, and the transformation could be immediate. Few coaches in the nation maximize offensive potential like Kiffin — and he’ll now get to do it with LSU-caliber personnel rather than mid-tier SEC depth charts.

That alone should terrify the rest of the league.

Recruiting in Cajun Country Just Got Louder

Kiffin has always been a gravitational force on the recruiting trail — a mix of wit, swagger, and results that resonates with high-school athletes. Now, with Louisiana’s talent-rich backyard at his disposal and Tiger Stadium as the ultimate selling point, he enters the strongest recruiting position of his career.

LSU is one of the few programs in America that recruits itself culturally. Add Kiffin’s aggressiveness and creativity, and you get a formula for explosive classes, elite transfer-portal hauls, and the kind of depth championships are made of.

Early reactions suggest that Louisiana high school coaches are already energized by the hire, and several top-100 prospects have posted tiger emojis, eyeball emojis, or — in true Gen Z fashion — vague “” reactions that indicate renewed interest.

The LSU brand always mattered. But with Kiffin at the helm, it suddenly feels electric again.

Personality Meets Pressure

Let’s address the most entertaining part of this hire: personality. Lane Kiffin isn’t buttoned-up, cautious, or reserved. He’s blunt. He’s sharp. He’s playful. He stirs the pot, pushes buttons, and finds oxygen in chaos. Other programs might view that as a risk; LSU sees it as fuel.

Baton Rouge thrives on energy, swagger, and a little bit of edge — and so does Kiffin. This match between coach and culture feels almost too perfect. It’s going to be loud. It’s going to be theatrical. And win or lose, it will never be boring.

But Kiffin also walks into one of the most demanding jobs in America. LSU fans want titles. Not hopes. Titles. They want to contend yearly, not occasionally. They expect physicality, discipline, and a defense that hits like a Bourbon Street brass band.

Kiffin must pair his offensive genius with a strong defensive staff, a robust recruiting infrastructure, and a cultural

could become the most important move LSU has made since landing Nick Saban 25 years ago.

A New Era Dawned Overnight

When the dust settles on this wild coaching carousel, one thing will be clear: LSU didn’t just hire a coach. LSU re-established its identity.

Lane Kiffin arrives with a rocket launcher for an offense, a personality fit for Louisiana, and the ambition to bring championships back to Baton Rouge. Whether you love him, fear him, or simply can’t look away, the Kiffin era is here — and the rest of college football better buckle up.

Tony’s Take KIFFEN, SOME COMMON SENSE ENTER LSU PORTALS

The three-ring circus that was the Lane Kiffen Show finally has taken the clowns off the floor and the real work of creating Nick Saban Two begins.

Let’s not look into the financing of Kiffen’s contract or the pushy entry into the fray by our latest self-inportant Governor. Let’s just hope that Kiffen creates a stronger essense of character and the Tigers don’t see Fast Lane take off for the next great thing. Kiffen’s isn’t Bobby Petrino but there’s a larger number of jilted fans who are still wiping the egg off their faces after Lane left Tennnessee, the Raiders, Alabama and Ole Miss in his quest to be the offensive guru with gravitas.

Several things have happened since two weeks ago. One, the Tigers landed four of the top six high school defensive ends and tackles in the class of 2025. That’s even better than Alabama or Ohio State has done. Two, the man to lead them - Defensive Coordinator Blake Baker - isn’t going anywhere. Baker’s decision was a key factor in signing Lamar Brown on December 5th. Brown, the University High senior, is considered the best defensive end (and player) in this year’s national class and his commitment gives LSU the top defensive tackle and edge rusher in this class - something never done before in college sports. Three, the alleged LSU brain trust, actually did something classy for a change by rescinding the scheduled ticket price increase for 2026. Since the school also shut off all the campus for the last half of the past season for people without high dollar parking permits, the jury is still out whether LSU will instigate a more professional way to handle all on campus parking instead of shoving approximately 12,000 fans off campus with no notice because the school couldn’t handle a couple of non-fatal shooting incidents on the south campus early in the season.

I say let Todd Graves pay Kifffen for his coaching services and give him a couple of Raisin’ Canes locations near the campus. Graves can work out the details so it will appear that LSU knows how to sign a high profile coach, dollar-wise. I hope Athletic Director Verge Ausberry doesn’t get caught up in this latest comic adventure. His common sense persona is the strongest the school has had in that position since Bob Broadhead held the AD position back in the 1980’s.

Bu.t now it’s Portal Time. Kiffen has a lot of work to do in the rent-a-player theatre and about $25 million or more to do it with. LSU desperately needs offensive linemen - about four with some meaningful experience - a primo wideout, a strong linebacker, a heavy duty running back and most of all, a couple of quarterbacks with whom Kiffen can work his $90 million magic and turn into the next Jayden Daniels. They don’t have to be big nameslook what Kiffen did at Ole Miss this season - but they have to be teachable.

I hope there’s a place for Frank Wilson and Corey Raymond at LSU. Both men bleed purple and gold and have proven during two stints that their recruiting acumen and coaching skills need to be retained. If Kiffen throws either one of them under the bus, don’t rush out and buy the Lane Kiffen doll. We’ll be seeing another coaching search and another nine-figure dead coaches’ salary going out the door. Frankly, I wouldn’t leave my household under Kiffen’s care

COLORFUL POINSETTIAS

Other than Christmas trees, nothing announces the Christmas season more visually than poinsettias. If you use red ones every year in your decorations, this might be the year to branch out into something new.

During a recent visit to the Mississippi State University South Mississippi Branch Experiment Station in Poplarville, I had the opportunity to explore their poinsettia research project. This year, the station is cultivating an impressive 50 plus varieties, from tradition-al reds and pristine whites to a dazzling array of non-traditional colors that bring fresh ex-citement to holiday decor.

One standout variety, Orange Glow, enchants with its warm orange bracts, ac-cented by coral and peach undertones. These sunlit tones are perfectly complemented by deep green foliage, making this poinsettia an eyecatching choice for modern or eclectic holiday displays.

The unique color of Orange Glow adds a cozy warmth, effortlessly standing out among more conventional holiday plants.

A personal favorite, Christmas Beauty Pink, offers a softer, more romantic ap-proach to seasonal decorating. Its pastel pink bracts, adorned with subtle veining, create a layered, watercolor-like effect that adds to their charm. The gentle pink contrasts beauti-fully with the plant’s rich green leaves, creating an elegant blend of colors.

This variety shines in feminine or romantic decor, whether used in table arrange-ments or as a standalone display piece.

One of the most unique varieties, Autumn Leaves, captures the spirit of fall with its warm, earthy tones. The bracts transition seamlessly from soft peach to rich amber, with hints of apricot and coral. The color changes in a stunning gradient reminiscent of autumn foliage.

Some bracts of Autumn Leaves have delicate pink undertones, adding depth and dimension to its appearance. This versatile variety bridges the seasons, making it a perfect choice for transitional decor.

These remarkable poinsettias are highly adaptable, complementing decorating styles ranging from classic holiday themes to bold, contemporary designs.

To keep your poinsettias vibrant and healthy, place them in bright, indirect sun-light for 6 to 8 hours daily, avoiding direct sunlight that can scorch their delicate bracts. Maintain a consistent indoor temperature of 65 to 75 degrees, keeping them away from cold drafts, heaters or vents to minimize stress.

Water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry, ensuring the pot has proper drainage to prevent root rot. Always remove any excess water from decorative wraps or saucers.

As tropical plants, poinsettias thrive in moderate humidity. You can create a suita-ble environment by using a pebble tray or humidifier in dry indoor conditions. Handle the bracts gently, as these are prone to bruising or tearing.

For those who wish to keep poinsettias beyond the holiday season, trim the plant back in early spring, repot if necessary and move it outdoors to partial shade once temper-atures remain consistently above 60 degrees.

By following these care tips, your poinsettias can remain beautiful and thriving, adding seasonal cheer to your home for weeks or even months to come.

BECOMING A FURRY FOSTER FOR THE HOLIDAYS!

This holiday season, you have the power to make a real difference in an animal’s life by choosing to foster. Even offering your home for a weekend can change the entire course of their journey for the better. Fostering gives animals the comfort, care, and space they need to grow during a time when they could use it most. Many of them thrive in a home setting where they can receive the kind of one-onone attention that is not always possible inside a busy shelter. By opening your door, you give them a chance to feel safe, loved, and ready for the next chapter of their lives. Which is why we challenge you to open your home and heart this season to a furry friend who could use a little extra love.

Here is why YOU should be a furry foster for the holidays:

You can help a timid pup who hasn’t felt a loving touch in months, learn to trust and open up to people again.

You get to care for a cat recovering from life-altering surgery as they slowly heal and regain their strength.

You can be there for a litter of puppies who lost their mom and need bottle-feeding so they can grow healthy and be ready for their future homes.

You have the opportunity to help a severely malnourished horse that hasn’t eaten in weeks regain its strength and reach a healthy weight.

You give a dog the chance to run freely in a backyard and burn off all their pent-up energy that they just can’t do while in a shelter.

The great thing about fostering is that it fits your lifestyle. You can choose socialization fostering, where you give animals love, attention, and exercise, or medical fostering, where animals rest and recover after surgery or illness. Both are incredibly important to the wellbeing of the animals and help them prepare for adoption. Whatever type of fostering you choose, you are giving these animals the gift of love, stability, and hope. Also, fostering lets you see firsthand the impact your time, attention, and hands-on care can have on an animal’s life. It is not only a deeply rewarding experience, but a meaningful way to give back to the animals in your community and to the shelters that work tirelessly to provide the best care and outcomes for every animal in their care as well. Another awesome reason to be a foster is that there is no cost on your part. Many foster programs cover all medical needs, including checkups, vaccinations, and treatments for the animal you are opening your home to. Fostering is really the perfect way to watch an animal grow and thrive, all because of your contributions.

With that in mind, each year, The Louisiana SPCA’s Foster Program provides temporary homes to nearly 1,500 animals until they are ready for adoption. If you want to learn more about fostering, volunteering, or donating your time to animals in need, visit www.louisianaspca.org to make a difference today. By opening your heart, even for a little while, you can change lives and help animals find their forever homes. This season, you can be the reason an animal gets one step closer to their forever home.

ADOPT A PET FROM S.T.A.R.T. AND SAVE $10 BY EMAILING S.T.A.R.T. & MENTION THIS AD.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

I am only four weeks old and have already used up at least one of my nine lives. I was down in a drain when some people found me and took me home. Fortunately, I was not left down there in the cold with no mother to feed and protect me. My rescuers began immediately searching for someone to bottle feed me. Luckily, a feeder was found and I am now in a warm home and no longer hungry.

It’s not uncommon to find a single kitten in a precarious situation like this. People often assume that its mother went off and left it when many times it was a person who abandoned the kitten. A kitten this young cannot survive on its own. It requires bottle feeding until it can eat solid food.

It needs to be protected from the elements and from predators. When pet owners do not spay/neuter their pets, unwanted litters occur and often the kittens and puppies suffer and many do not survive. Spaying and neutering pets before they produce litters is the key to preventing pet overpopulation and suffering. Contact your local animal shelter to find out about low cost spay/neuter options.
