The violence I predicted several years ago post-game at LSU made an unwelcome visit during the South Carolina and Florida game weeks with two separate shooting incidents sometime during the games. Although there were no fatalities, a popular gathering area has been closed for the near future where the October shootings took place - known as Unity Field, at the northeast corner of Highland and South Stadium Drive.
In a move to head off more possible trouble, LSU authorities decided to bar any non-permitted vehicles to park on campus during the rest of the season. Since at least half the vehicles on campus park without permits in unrestricted areas, this move was not well thought out. First, the school wants thousands of people to learn new routes to free parking areas much farther from the actual campus. These areas may not present a safe haven for generations of folks used to parking around the fraternities and parade ground areas near University High. Second, the traffic snarl on the west side of the campus is already a hot mess and adding another 3-4,000 vehicles to these areas will require many folks to bring sleeping bags with them while they wait for post-game traffic to free up. Third, the areas are much farther than folks are used to walking and for us older fans, the inconvenience will be palipatable.
Since decision making under pressure at LSU is akin to watching the Biden team in action, we can only hope that if this the future of parking during the season, that the school issue free parking permits to those who have borne the ever increasing cost of professional amateur football at LSU, many of whom have attended games since the days of Paul Dietzel.
Unless this was the plan all along: wring out a few more million dollars from the working stiffs who bleed purple and gold but don’t wear the mantle of purple royalty nor have the resources to invest in gold. I mean charge everyone who wants to park within two miles of the stadium and continue to avoid shuttles from distant parking areas to the stadium. Believe it or not, dozens of schools have been doing this for years….decades. The shuttles, I mean.
If this sounds like a real bitch session, it is. When 100,000 plus people attend an event like LSU football, it is almost impossible to keep them safe by foisting them off on areas not under legal protection by LSU. I predict that road rage will create as many if not more problems than the “brain trust” thinks they’ve taken care of and then you can watch the demise of what society has brought to an activity once wholesome and fun. If this problem were new, I might be a little more understanding. But it’s been coming for years and the school has been lucky. Like nearly everything else LSU creates outside of the intelligent and financially solvent TAF, this is another false promise. But this time it could turn into a real cluster f….
FOOTNOTE: since this column was written, LSU has done much to remove their possible game day traffic and shooting problems by discontinuing SEC style football for the rest of the 2025 season. I will bet that less than 65,000 Tiger fans showed up for a midday game against Arkansas on November 15th and fewer than that for the home finale’ against Western Kentucky.

ORNAMENTAL GRASSES ARE BLOOMING!
Driving through the region during this time of year can be quite beautiful. The cool weather experienced earlier this month gave us a little taste of winter, especially seeing all the color change. At the same time, I am seeing all the native and non-native grasses in full bloom. These ornamental grasses are easy to grow landscape plants and it’s pleasing to see so many as you drive around.
Ornamental grasses offer the gardener an endless list of qualities without many side effects. Traits like drought tolerance, disease resistance, insect resistance, and adaptability to several different soil types make ornamental grasses easy to grow for all gardeners. Ornamental grasses also add texture, contrast, color, and year-around interest. Even though they go dormant during winter months, they still provide interest and excitement to the garden.
Grasses don’t have a need to attract insect pollinators and therefore don’t display beautifully colored petals in varying arrangements. The flowers of grass plants are very plain. Grasses utilize the wind to spread genetic material. It’s the reason why we recommend planting corn (another wind pollinated grass plant) in a black pattern rather than in a long single file row. There is a higher probability of pollination (and subsequent fertilization) when wind pollinated plants are grouped closer together. The flowers of grass plants aren’t just for seed production. In the landscape, the flowers of ornamental grass provide a pleasing landscape quality during late summer and fall. Even after the color fades, the flower structures provide texture through late winter and early spring. Some grasses produce quality foliage in different colors which benefit the landscape. As they go into the dormant winter period, these grasses lose that initial color, but they still provide interest in the landscape, even with brown leaves. Coupled with an exhausting list of desirable traits, ornamental grasses are some of the most versatile options for use in the southern landscape.
Grasses come in many different sizes and can perform different uses. Smaller growing grasses work well when used as borders or ground cover plantings. Look at Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Hamelin’ for a low growing groundcover grass that can be mass planted to cover the ground. While not exactly a grass, Liriope muscari, shares some of the same qualities. They are commonly used to outline and define flowerbeds by planting in a border or line. Medium size grasses help to create vertical lines in the garden. Some examples of medium sized grasses include Nassella tenuissima, Mexican feather grass, or purple fountain grass, Pennisetum setaceum rubrum. P. setaceum rebrum ‘Fireworks’ is an LSU AgCenter Super Plant known for its purple, pink, and red color scheme. Pink muhlygrass, Muhlenbergia capillaris, is catching on with a lot of landscape designers. The foliage will get about 3 ft tall, and the entire plant will average 4 ft by 3 ft when in flower. Taller growing grasses work best when used in the back of a flowerbed. Some examples include Miscanthus sinensis, maiden grass, Cortaderia selloana, pampas grass. These options are some of the common examples that you will find in the nursery trade. Check your local garden center to see what options are available to you.

Hi, Everyone! email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com
Hope you all are enjoying your Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends. My granddaughter couldn’t wait to get things ready to go deer hunting. She came home from college on Friday, went to the Archbishop Shaw football game to visit with friends and left Saturday morning to head to the deer hunting camp. She promises she will be back Tuesday night or Wednesday morning to help her Mom and me. I hope she has a good time and brings back something from this hunting trip. This is a trip she and her Dad had taken for a few years now. She is a pretty good hunter. Her Pa (my husband) gave her her first hunting rifle when she was 10. He was totally old school and believed a child needed to learn to live off the land. That’s how we were raised being from DTR.
Since it’s Thanksgiving, I decided to do a fun Thanksgiving Turkey. Although it did take me a while to find a surface to paint him on. I know I have a bunch of 10 and 12 inch round circles, but for the life of me, I cannot remember where I put them! I know they are in the craft room...I think. But, I have been moving things around and....well, I just don’t know. But, anyway, I found an 11 inch round worked just as good. First I base coated with Whispering Turquoise and stenciled the words with Turquoise Blue. I then used a chip brush and white paint to dry brush across the circle. Traced on the main outline of the turkey. Painted the head, body, and wings with Sable Brown. The collar is Bleached Sand, the tail feathers are Santa Red, Spiced Pumpkin, Sunset Gold. The pumpkins are based Spiced Pumpkin, the leaves are Foliage Green shaded with Avocado. Then I stenciled on the words Give Thanks and added the stars. He looks so cute hanging outside ready to greet those who come by to visit.
Well, that’s my project for this time. What will your next project be? Mine? Guess I will be doing Christmas projects. Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!! Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Lane Kiffin is one of the most dynamic and polarising figures in college football coaching today. His résumé—including head-coaching stints at Ole Miss Rebels (since 2020), USC Trojans, and Florida Atlantic Owls—is studded with big wins, strong offensive performances and a protean personality.
As of late 2025, Kiffin is at the centre of serious speculation about a potential move to LSU Tigers, with multiple indicators suggesting his chances of taking the LSU head-coaching job are quite high. Here’s a breakdown of his chances, the factors working for and against him, and what such a move would mean.
Why Kiffin’s chances of coaching at LSU appear strong
1. Momentum & Odds
Kiffin has emerged as the top betting-favourite to become the next LSU coach. One betting site listed him at +300 to land the job.
Media outlets note that LSU has taken a lead in the pursuit, seemingly edging out other suitors like Florida Gators.
2. Massive Contract Offer
Reports say LSU is preparing a seven-year deal worth around $90 million–$98 million to woo him, including a significant NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) and recruiting investment component (reportedly $25 million+ in support).
The sheer size of the offer shifts the balance in favour of LSU being able to outbid others—and tempting enough for Kiffin to consider the move.
3. Program Fit and Opportunity
LSU is a blue-blood program with immense resources, a passionate fan base, and a tradition of national prominence. For a coach like Kiffin—who thrives on big stages—it’s an alluring platform.
At Ole Miss, he has already built credibility (four double-digit win seasons) and can show he can win in the SEC. That success gives him credibility to make the jump.
Why his chances are not a guaranteed lock
1. Unfinished Commitment
Despite the rumours, Kiffin has publicly emphasised his focus on his current team, stating he expects to coach next week and is preparing for his current season.
The decision apparently is expected after the 2025 Egg Bowl (Ole Miss vs. Mississippi State). Timing and process could complicate things.
2. Risks & Expectations at LSU
Coaching at LSU comes with intense pressure—political, donor-driven, media-intense. One report notes that LSU involves “political pressure up to the governor.”
A large contract means big expectations. If things go sideways, the backlash could be severe. Some voices sceptical of the deal’s value.
3. Ole Miss Might Counter
There are indications Ole Miss is willing to attempt to match whatever LSU offers or at least make his stay attractive.
Staying at Ole Miss presents a “build legacy” option rather than chasing a new job. Some analysts even suggest staying may be the smarter move.
Prediction:
I would guess Kiffin’s chance of moving to LSU at somewhere between 60–75%. The momentum, contract offer, and fit tilt in favour of the move. But the uncertainty around timing, his current commitment, and the full array of pressures at LSU mean it’s far from done.
If he accepts the job, it would mark a major coup for LSU and reframe the SEC coaching landscape. For Kiffin, it would be an opportunity to operate at the highest level with enormous resources—and also enormous expectations.
Conversely, if he chooses to stay at Ole Miss, it might signal a shift in his priorities (focusing on stability, legacy, player relationships). That choice would also refract differently on how college coaching careers are evolving.
Right now....all I can tell the LSU Faithful is to “Hold!”

Tony’s Take
PRESENTING THE 1ST ANNUAL LESS SMILES FOOTBALL AWARD
Thoughts while recovering from the pain following surgery for a rebuilt hip: This is award season, where football players finish jockeying for postseason awards based on their skill set. But LSU has been blessed with some really weird head football coaches during the past forty-five years. And when the grousing over unrealized success reaches its zenith, why not line up a few negative, tongue-incheek honors for members of the LSU football family?
The award should carry the gravitas of what it represents. While three former coaches after Charlie McClendon could be considered the namesake of this honor, the most obvious is the man who grazed the grass and praised the chests of both male football recruits and female athletic staffers with equal aplomb.
Lester Miles was one of those characters that you couldn’t make up. A disciple of a former Michigan football legend, this Ohio dude was equally at home losing track of a game clock or giving one-on-one attention to LSU female staffers, whose cup size and GPA were both D.
So the Less Smiles Annual Awards will begin this late season as LSU winds down another football season that started out so well but was shaken to its core, or torso, or upper body. Whatever.
Let’s begin on offense, where those folks challenged with numbers larger than 20 had a field day. Behind an offensive line that truly was, LSU’s defense against visiting opponents reminded me of a typical Joe Biden day at the border, where no matter how many tried to reach the United States, there was little success in keeping them out. Ditto for the dudes who couldn’t keep out the powerhouse defensive front seven of Louisiana Tech and Southeastern and LSU’s five couldn’t block any opponent’s three nearly every play.
Offensive lineman? D. J. Chester, the most selfless and versatile player never to develop into what a 6 foot, 6 inch, 315 pound man should have been: a run blocking or protection force. Hate to do this to a nice guy but you know what they say about nice guys……
The Going Through the Motions award belongs to Chris Hilton, who could get open but couldn’t close the deal with a necessary catch. College football’s fastest receiver just wasn’t the player he should have been - a five star Hilton instead of a two and a half star Hilton. Maybe LSU needs to recruit Holiday Inn Expresses instead of Hiltons. They had a great Holliday some years back and they could use another. (Don’t expect to see Hilton playing on Sundays next year).
Dropsy Award. Besides Hilton, who took advantage of fewer and fewer field appearances, this could go to Barion Brown. But this should be a position award in 2025 because all of the receivers had shortcomings in the open field….some just a bit more than others.
Gunslinger Award? Nuss Nussmeier, whose decision making abilities were skewered in a seasonal Raisin’ Canes commercial and whose regression from a peak late last year was evident over his obvious physical limitations and his inability to learn from his mistakes. It was Clint Eastwood who said “a man needs to know his limitations” and Garrett never knew. A shame because some analysts considered him a top three Heisman hopeful and top five NFL recruit. Ain’t gonna happen.
Coaching? A tie between Offensive Coordinator Joe Sloan, who couldn’t figure how to free up receivers deep against any defense and Brian Kelly, who apparently didn’t believe in the credo “you’re best improvement is between games one and two.” Kelly became a broken record and you can see where he was ranked in my modern day list of eleven LSU football coaches. Following the Texas A&M game, you can see how prescient I was with this award. And he’s at his attorney’s office, reacting to the most recent stupidity from the LSU football brain trust. At least keep the a..hole Governor out of the picture, will you?

GROWING MICROGREENS AT HOME
There’s something incredibly satisfying about watching a tray of seeds transform into a lush carpet of tender greens in just a couple of weeks. Growing microgreens is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to enjoy homegrown flavor, and you don’t even need a garden bed to do it.
I’ve been growing trays of colorful microgreens that brighten the greenhouse benches. One of my favorite combinations includes red cabbage, purple kohlrabi, and broccoli microgreens. When grown side by side, the deep purples and bright greens create a striking contrast that’s as beautiful as it is delicious.
Microgreens are the young seedlings of edible vegetables and herbs, harvested when they’re only a couple of inches tall and full of fresh, concentrated flavor. They’re perfect for adding to salads, sandwiches, wraps, or even sprinkled on top of soups and pasta.
Growing them couldn’t be simpler. All you need is a shallow tray or container with drainage holes, quality potting mix, and your choice of seeds. Fill the tray with about an inch of pre-moistened soil and scatter the seeds evenly across the surface. Press them gently into the soil and cover lightly with a thin layer of mix or vermiculite.

In the warm, humid conditions of a Southern greenhouse or sunny porch, most microgreens germinate within a few days. I like to cover my trays for the first 48 hours to hold in moisture, then uncover them and place them in bright, indirect light. A greenhouse bench or sunny kitchen window works perfectly.
Consistent moisture is key. Keep the surface damp but not soggy. A fine mist spray works well to prevent soil splashing and fungal problems. Because microgreens rely on the nutrients stored in their seeds, there’s no need to fertilize.
In about 10 to 14 days, your tray will be ready for harvest. When the first true leaves appear, use clean scissors to snip the stems just above the soil line. Rinse gently, pat dry, and enjoy immediately. The fresh, crisp texture and bold flavors are far superior to anything you can buy in the store.
If you want a continuous supply, simply start a new tray every week or two. Mix and match seed types, such as mustard, kale, arugula, or radish, for a variety of colors, textures, and flavors.
Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just looking for an easy indoor project, microgreens bring a burst of garden freshness to the table year-round. In the South, where sunlight and warmth are plentiful, these little greens thrive, turning even the smallest space into a productive mini-garden.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
I am only four weeks old and have already used up at least one of my nine lives. I was down in a drain when some people found me and took me home. Fortunately, I was not left down there in the cold with no mother to feed and protect me. My rescuers began immediately searching for someone to bottle feed me. Luckily, a feeder was found and I am now in a warm home and no longer hungry. It’s not uncommon to find a single kitten in a precarious situation like this. People often assume that its mother went off and left it when many times it was a person who abandoned the kitten. A kitten this young cannot survive on its own. It requires bottle feeding until it can eat solid food. It needs to be protected from the elements and from

PROTECT YOUR PETS THIS THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY
Now that the season of giving is upon us, this holiday is sure to be filled with delicious food, loving family, and joyful travel, with our pets sharing in the excitement. That is why it is important to keep them safe and calm throughout the celebrations. By planning ahead, we can offer pet-safe treats, supervise them around food, keep them leashed or harnessed, provide a quiet space, and make sure their microchip and ID tags are up to date. Taking these steps helps prevent illness, reduce stress, and protect them if they escape. With a little preparation, we can ensure our pets enjoy a safe and happy Thanksgiving alongside the whole family.
When shopping before the big day of giving, consider choosing pet-safe treats and foods such as raw bones, boiled unseasoned chicken or turkey, and low-sodium broths from trusted stores such as PetSmart, Petco, Jefferson Feed, Walmart, or Target. These stores offer festive treats and meals made with healthy ingredients that your pet will enjoy without compromising their well-being. When shopping on the day of, avoid giving your pets foods that can make them sick, such as onions, chocolate, cooked bones, raisins/grapes, and butter; and keep their food bowls away from hot surfaces and open trash bins. If your pet shows signs of illness, including vomiting or diarrhea, contact a veterinarian immediately.
Also, if your holiday plans involve traveling with your pet, make sure their microchip information and ID tags are up to date. Always keep your pets leashed and secured at all times to prevent unexpected escapes in unfamiliar environments. If possible, providing a quiet space such as a travel crate with familiar bedding and toys can help reduce your pet’s anxiety. With guests coming and going and the increased noise and activity, some pets may feel stressed. During large gatherings, open doors and gates can increase the risk of our pets escaping. That’s why providing calming treats, anxiety chews, or vet-approved calming aids can help to keep them in one space as well.
By watching over our pets closely, offering safe treats, planning carefully for travel, and providing a calm environment, we can ensure this Thanksgiving is safe and enjoyable for both you and your furry companions. Also, the Louisiana SPCA’s Pet Food Pantry is currently empty, and you can make a difference in the life of a hungry pet by donating pet food to support our mission of keeping pets with the people who love them. Donation drop-offs are available at both campuses: Plaquemines at 455 Edward Herbert Boulevard and Orleans at 1700 Mardi Gras Boulevard. For more information on how to make a real difference this holiday season, visit www.louisianaspca.org/food-pantry.
