Program exposes adults to STEM By Bailey Wright The Citizen

In the latest installment of the library’s STEM Coffee Hour series, Quinnipiac University professor Jose Riofrio brought accessible electronics to local adults recently.

30 hopefuls considered to lead district By Bailey Wright The Citizen

Riofrio, a professor of mechanical engineering, taught participants the basics of an open-source electronics platform called Arduino, which he said is one of his favorite things.

The search agency charged with finding the school district’s next superintendent said almost 30 applicants are being considered.

“I think Arduino is used almost equally by hobbyists and artists than it is by scientists, so this is why I really like it – you don't have to be a circuits person to appreciate it,” Riofrio said.

“I sit here certain that the hiring committee has their next superintendent,” said Joseph Erardi of JE Consulting, at a recent Board of Education meeting.

He said the operating system really caters to anyone, as it allows people to bypass the need for consulting a computer scientist to make an idea come to life. All people need really need to start is a computer and the operating system, which looks like a small circuit board.

Ax-throwing business regroups after denial By Bailey Wright The Citizen

A request to allow ax throwing facilities in town was withdrawn last week by the applicants, AXEcited LLC. “We withdrew our application, but

we’re still willing to look at the possibility of North Haven,” said Joseph Riga, co-founder of AXEcited, who declined to comment further on the withdrawal. Riga said the company is considering other towns as well.

Current superintendent of schools, Dr. Robert Cronin, will retire at the end of December. The Board of Education’s hiring committee is in the interview stage and expects to have the position filled by the end of the year. “As sad as I am to see Dr. Cronin move on to his next journey in life, I'm going to miss him, but I'm looking forward to getting to know the next superintendent,” said Anita Anderson, BOE chairwoman. Erardi said about 27 complete applications were sub-

Man sentenced in scheme to fence stolen goods By Bailey Wright The Citizen

HARTFORD — A North Haven man was sentenced to 54 months in prison for his role in a large-scale fencing operation, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney for Connecticut. Paul William Muzyka, 49, of North Haven, was sentenced Thursday, Nov. 15 by U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea to 54 months’ imprisonment, followed by two years of supervised release. He was ordered to report to prison on Feb. 4, 2019. Judge Shea also ordered

On March 16, 2016, Muzyka pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit the interstate transport of stolen property and two counts of interstate transport of stolen property.

According to federal prosecutors, the boosters stole the goods from retail stores such as Home Depot, Target, CVS, and Lowe’s, and would sell them at Ace Amusements for about one-third of their retail prices. The stolen goods would then be resold by Muzyka and Connelly at Ace Amusements and through online websites such as eBay.

Based on court documents and statements made in court, Muzyka and George J. Connelly, Jr., operated Ace Amusements on Kimberly Avenue in New Haven and through the licensed secondhand store purchased stolen property from “boost-

rinks, tennis courts, driving ranges and indoor and outdoor miniature golf courses. The application was put on hold after the town’s fire and police chiefs expressed concerns about alcohol consumption. The proposal did not include alcohol consumption, but Land Use Administrator Alan Fredricksen said it did leave the door open. The police and fire chiefs suggested the Planning and Zoning Commission only approve the amendment if restrictions on alcohol use were added.

The Veterans Day ceremony on the North Haven Town Green began as the American Legion Post 176 Color Guard passed by the Blue Star Memorial. The Blue Star Memorial was sponsored by the Daytime Gardeners of North Haven, along with Arnold’s Jewelers and The Gould Insurance Group. The memorial honors all veterans who have served our country, all those who are currently serving, and those who will serve in the future. During the winter season, the memorial is decorated with a red, white and blue ribbon.

“I have no objection to amending the proposed language … to include ‘Axe Throwing Facilities,’ however, from a law enforcement perspective, I do not believe this type of activity should be allowed in establishments that serve beer, wine or other liquor,” Police Chief Thomas McLoughlin said in an Aug. 2 letter to Fredricksen.

Fredricksen said Januszewski expressed similar concerns. While liquor permits are granted by the state, they also require local approval. Partners Riga and Joseph Cifarelli formed AXEcited in June. “Having strong ties to the Town of North Haven and being committed business owners in the community we are looking to continue that commitment by bringing another business venture to the area,” the company’s website states. “One which will bring a new experience and enjoyment to all who participate.” Ax-throwing venues have opened in Connecticut recently, including one called Blue Ox Ax Throwing in Wallingford. At Blue Ox, as at many axe throwing facilities, customers are allowed to bring their own beer and wine, but not hard liquor. Other venues, like Montana Nights Axe Throwing in Newington, have received permits to serve alcohol.

Revaluation process to be done in 2019 The Town of North Haven has begun to work on the 2019GL revaluation, as mandated by Connecticut State Statute 12-62(b). This statute requires all municipalities to revalue all of its real estate not later than five years after their last revaluation. The Town of North Haven’s last revaluation was completed as of Oct. 1, 2014. Therefore the town is mandated to complete a revaluation for Oct. 1, 2019. The primary purpose of a revaluation, which is a mass appraisal of all real property within an assessment jurisdiction, is to eliminate any assessment inequities that

may have developed since the implementation of a previous revaluation. This is accomplished by updating the assessments of real property to reflect their fair market value. The Town of North Haven has retained eQuality Valuation Services, of Waterbury, to help the Assessor complete the revaluation. eQuality will have data collectors in the field looking at all residential and commercial properties to check data. All data collectors will have a photo ID and be registered with the town. The collection process will run through October 2019. — Press Release

STEM From A1

from what they use now.

dent Katina Bell, said she came to the session with a lifelong hobbyist interest in mechanical engineering. Bell said she and her 18year-old son will work on things at home that need fixing, taking things apart and putting them back together.

Melinda Landino, the library technical assistant who has been organizing the coffee hours, said she has found a lot of positive response for STEM programs, which are open to anyone 18 and older.

For Bell, the coffee hours provide a place for adults like her that work all day a place to learn about STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) topics they might not otherwise be exposed to. “I love it. I love the STEM (coffee hours) and how they bring the technology to us,” Bell said. For Pamela Begin, the class was a chance for her to learn about a program she might be able to introduce to her students at East Shore Middle School in Milford. She said Arduino is “a level up”

She said the series started a few years ago with a former Yale professor, and kept going even after the professor moved out of state, due to the demand. Some past sessions included the science behind distracted driving, autonomous cars and darkness in the universe. Future classes include the opioid epidemic and microbiomes. The current schedule can be found on the library’s website. bwright@record-journal.com 203-317-2316 Twitter: @baileyfaywright
