Town maintains AAA financial rating Standard & Poor’s Global Ratings has announced that it has assigned another “AAA” long term financial rating to the Town of North Haven. S & P Global stated, “This rating reflects our view of town government’s leadership and proactive management with our expectations being that leadership will continue to develop opportunities for economic development and business expansion in

North Haven.” S & P further stated, “This long term rating also reflects town government’s strong leadership and management with good financial policies and strong budgetary performance.” North Haven First Selectman Michael Freda stated: “I am delighted that we have continued to maintain this significant rating, as it provides the town

with the benefit of lower interest rates, which saves our tax payers substantial dollars when it comes to the town bonding to improve its infrastructure. It also helps us to attract new economic development to the town.” This marks the fifth consecutive year that North Haven has earned Standard & Poor’s AAA financial rating.

STATE OF NORTH HAVEN

Freda touts town’s economic growth By Bailey Wright The Citizen

First Selectman Michael J. Freda expressed a positive outlook on the town’s economic development future last Thursday, citing recent successful developments and opportunities and the challenges moving forward. “There will be continued new businesses coming to North Haven, that I can guarantee you. There will be top line revenue growth; that is a commitment also, that is definitely going to happen,” Freda said. Freda presented “the State of North Haven” to business people and community leaders gathered at the town’s annual fall economic breakfast event at Fantasia, sponsored by Newtown Savings Bank. He announced the town was re-rated AAA. Among the recent economic growth, he listed more than 20 new businesses or complexes that have either opened up or have committed to opening in town. These include Amazon, still scheduled for a May 2019 opening; a variety of businesses in Washington Commons on Washington Avenue; a new specialty beer manufacturer at 341 State St.; and the expansion of BYK from Wallingford at 33 Stiles Lane. “A good example of what I think we

Fasano, McKeen differ on tolls By Lauren Takores Record-Journal staff

With less than a week to go before the election, jobs, taxes and the state economy are the top issues that residents of the 34th Senate District are bringing to Republican incumbent Len Fasano and McKeen Democratic challenger Aili McKeen, the candidates said. Fasano, of North Haven, who leads his party’s SenFasano ate caucus, ran unopposed in the last two election cycles.

need more of in Connecticut is a company like BYK not leaving from point A to point B within Connecticut, certainly not leaving the state, but a company that's expanding from one municipality into another,” Freda said. “This will be a very productive company here in town.” Some projects in the works are new developments on the site of Cinemark, 550 Universal Drive, a train sta-

tion at the end of Stiles Lane, a hotel at 425 Washington Ave., and a drivethrough Dunkin Donuts at 102 Middletown Ave. Freda said the train station’s location shifted from Devine Street to the end of Stiles Lane. It is being re-designed, which is fully funded, but Freda said they don’t know where the state transportation fund will end up in See Town, A5

McKeen, of Wallingford, said Tuesday that the concerns she’s heard lately as she continues door-knocking are not very different from what she heard earlier this year. “People don’t want their taxes to go up,” she said. “They want to stay in the state when they retire.” Fasano said Tuesday he’s hearing from his constituents that there are too few jobs and too many taxes. “They really feel they’re beSee 34th, A12

COMMENTARY

Voters deserve a choice in every race This election season, two candidates — one Democrat and one Republican — have stepped up to challenge two big names in Connecticut politics.

Facing a difficult fight, McKeen and Gagliardi entered the political arena anyway. And that’s commendable. Voters deserve a choice.

Wallingford resident Aili McKeen is taking on Senate Republican President Pro Tempore Len Fasano in the 34th District race, and Michael Gagliardi, of Berlin, is looking to unseat Democrat Joe Aresimowicz, the speaker of the house, in the 30th.

While McKeen has been campaigning since the summer when she won her Democratic primary, Gagliardi’s long-shot bid began just this month. The 47year-old was chosen as the Republican nominee on Oct. 23 after previous GOP candidate Steven Baleshiski

dropped out of the race after losing party support due to some disturbing social media posts.

which includes parts of Southington and Berlin — will have another option on Election Day.

“I don’t think any candidate should run unopposed. Even if it’s an uphill battle I think people should have a choice,” said Gagliardi. “We need some fresh perspectives, we need some people to come in with different ideas.”

McKeen has done the same for residents of the 34th, which covers Durham, East Haven, North Haven and Wallingford.

Thanks to Gagliardi, voters in the 30th House District —

“Democracy is not served without choice,” McKeen said. “This will be the first time since 2012 that people will have a choice.”

Scripture Bits

Fasano has run unopposed six times since taking office in 2002. Aresimowicz, first elected in 2004, also hasn’t always drawn an opponent. This isn’t how things are supposed to operate in a democracy. Lawmakers should be elected, not anointed. Kudos to McKeen and Gagliardi for throwing their hats in the ring.

Letters to the Editor The best choice To the editor: I support Theresa RanciatoViele's candidacy for state representative. Theresa's opponent, Dave Yaccarino, has failed the middle class by voting against Paid Family & Medical Leave, workplace protections and living wages. Theresa's proposed plans to protect working people and provide access to education, drug addiction services, affordable housing, childcare and comprehensive health insurance, would benefit many residents. Her bipartisan focus on improving skilled workforce training, fair wages, and transportation infrastructure would help regain Connecticut's competitive economic position. On Nov. 6, please vote for Theresa, the best choice for North Haven. Nancy Barrett North Haven

Deserving of reelection To the editor: I would like to ask you to join me in voting for state Sen. Len Fasano and Rep. Dave Yaccarino.
