Volunteers clean up litter on river By Jeniece Roman Record-Journal staff

MERIDEN — Rubber tires, a mattress, and living room furniture were among the items volunteers found along the Quinnipiac River last weekend. About 50 volunteers picked up garbage and litter along the river for more than three hours on Saturday. The cleanup was organized by the Quinnipiac River Watershed Association.

An application to allow an axe-throwing venue in town might not move forward after the police chief and fire chief expressed concerns about the business allowing alcohol consumption.

In the past, volunteers have found bowling balls and room decorations. Volunteer Mike Hughes, a Meriden resident, said he is no longer surprised by what he finds, including shopping carts, house shingles, nails and broken glass. “You don’t have to look far to find hu-

AXEcited, LLC submitted an application in late July asking that zoning regulations be amended to include “axe throwing facilities” in light industrial zones. The current zoning regulation for light industrial zones allows bowling alleys, skating rinks, tennis courts, driving ranges and indoor and outdoor miniature golf courses. The proposal did not specifically include alcohol consumption, but Land Use Administrator Alan Fredricksen said it did leave the door open. The police and fire chiefs are suggesting the See Axe, A9

All the new and gently used coats collected will be donated to The Umbrella Center for domestic violence victims, the Veterans of America and some local homeless shelters.

Zavarella said about 1,450 coats have been donated.

Zavarella said the drive first started when she was going through her and her husband’s own surplus of coats and started thinking about how many other people had coats they weren’t using that could be donated. She said through working at the local Stop & Shop for 23 years, she’s seen a lot of kids that need coats and wanted that to be the drive’s focus. She went to the Community Center to help get the drive started. “It’s been a wonderful expe-

Fredricksen said Januszewski expressed having no objections to the “concepts of this type of establishment,” but his principal concern was with its relationship to alcohol. The Fire Chief is required to authorize all liquor permits and renewals in town.

“I have no objection to amending the proposed language … to include ‘Axe Throwing Facilities.’ However, from a law enforcement perspective, I do not believe this type of activity should be allowed in establishments that serve beer, wine or other liquor,” Police Chief Thomas McLoughlin said in an Aug. 2 letter to Fredricksen. McLoughlin said he would ask the PZC to include a liquor restriction calling for 500 feet between the axe throwing facility and any establishment that offers any alcoholic beverage or allows customers to bring their own. The letter also says the police department would ask that the commission prohibit “anyone under the age of 18 from participating or being present at such Axe Throwing Event.” Fire Chief Paul Januszewski shared similar concerns on the proposal in a letter to Fredricksen, also
