Connex coin program benefits library Police

warn of scams

Connex Credit Union recently donated more than $1,000 to Friends of the North Haven Memorial Library in support of the organization’s mission. The funds were raised through Coinsfor-Change, Connex’s philanthropic program that contributes more than $13,000 annually to local charitable organizations as part of the ConnexCares initiative.

By Terry Sutton Special to The Citizen

Recent criminal incidents in the towns of Southington and Plainville have law enforcement officials asking the public to get educated about scams, and to stay alert.

Friends of the North Haven Memorial Library is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and strengthening the facilities and services of the North Haven Memorial Library. It supports educational and cultural programs that bring the library to life.

Lieutenant Nicholas Mullins of the Plainville Police Department warns of three particular robberies and scams.

With the Coins-for-Change program, Connex charges a 5 percent fee to members, and a 7 percent fee to nonmembers, to use its coin-cashing machines. Each fiscal quarter, 100 percent of this money is donated to deserving organizations in the local community.

Susan Weymann, treasurer, and Eileen Fletcher, president of Friends of the North Haven Memorial Library, with Carl Casper, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Connex Credit Union.

Mullins refers to these crimes as “distraction burglaries” and said such incidents have happened in Plainville and in many other communities. “In this scam someone will knock at a resident’s door claiming to be from Eversource or the water department and are there to inspect the property,” Mullins said. “While the unsuspecting resident is distracted by this person, other members See Scams, A2

Dear Residents and Business Owners of the Town of North Haven:

THE COST OF SEWER SERVICE IS RISING Average annualized sewer costs of the rate structures reported in a survey was $472. The cost of sewer service has increased 16% over 3 years.

In Southington, the police have dealt with a more

One of the most commonly reported challenges facing water systems across Connecticut is our aging infrastructure. A rate structure designed to provide sustainable revenue for Operations and capital programs is critical to assure reliable and effective sewer protection.

Former educators to meet for lunch

In 1991, we made a conscious investment as a Community to upgrade and rehabilitate our wastewater and sewer treatment facility in order to provide effective and efficient sanitary sewer services to property owners connected to our public sewer system. We have enjoyed the benefits of that multi-million-dollar investment for the past 27 years. However, as the facility has begun to age we have recently seen increased costs of maintenance and less efficient operation of the plant. As a result, we commissioned a study of the operational status of our current facilities which included a capital improvement plan to be implemented over the next 5-10 years. Spreading those costs of those improvements over a longer period of time will also permit them to be absorbed into our budget gradually without the need for a significant spike in the cost of providing those services in the event of a catastrophic failure. We have enjoyed the benefits of our public sewer system at an annual fee of $270. Other current annual sewer use fees are $450 in the Town of North Branford, $383 in the Town of Cheshire, $468 in the Town of Wallingford, $425 in the Town of Orange and $449 for Greater New Haven. In order to meet the challenges of maintaining and updating the facilities which are approaching the end of their useful life, we anticipate an increase in the sewer use fee to permit us to undertake these repairs over the next 10 years. We will do so with sensitivity realizing an increase will have an impact on your personal and/or business budgets. This increase will allow us to maintain the facility so that we can all enjoy the benefits of the services it will provide us for the next 30 years. We will hold a public hearing during the month of September to discuss our annual sewer use fee in light of the long-term capital improvement plan to maintain the facility. We invite you to attend that hearing so that you might participate in the process with us. Very truly yours,

Retirees from the North Haven Board of Education are scheduled to meet Monday, Sept. 10 at The Pacific Buffet and Grill, 20 Ives Road, Wallingford. Social is set for 11:30 a.m., lunch at noon. The grants were made on Aug. 10, as part of the 2017 year grantee list. It was specified for personal protective equipment, and provides 95 percent of needed funded if

Eligible applicants include local fire departments, fire districts, nonaffiliated EMS organizations, tribal fire departments and State Fire Training Academies. The grant applications are submitted from each agency directly to FEMA, where the applications are reviewed

and scored by fire service personnel from throughout the nation. Middlefield’s volunteer fire department also was awarded a grant to replace outdated breathing apparatus. The department plans to use its $152,620 grant to purchase 24 new Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and 10 spare breathing units and pieces. This is the first time the fire company has received the grant. Middlefield fire Chief Peter Tyc said the company’s current breathing units

don’t allow all firefighters to have individual apparatus and are set to expire next year. “This will meet the latest standards and conditions and the recommendations,” Tyc said. He added sanitary conditions will greatly improve. The primary goal of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant is to help meet the needs of fire and emergency response departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations.
