This year she’s taking the support one step further by offering complimentary hair treatments for breast cancer survivors at her Washington Street salon, Flair for Hair. The treatment includes a lather lounge experience, conditioning, head massage, hand massage, haircut or styling.

The agency helps seniors and people with disabilities stay living in their homes, and offers several training and volunteer services, including caretaker training and matching seniors with volunteer opportunities.
Agency on Aging, a New Haven-based company, plans to move at the end of January to their new approximately 15,000 square-foot office space.
Agency on Aging will be downsizing with the move, and found North Haven to be the perfect size and location due to how the company’s operations have changed over the last several years. Around 70 to 100 employees will work in the space, Freda said.

“I think it's beneficial for everyone. It will certainly bring seniors into towns,” Planning and Zoning Commission Chairman Vern Carlson said. “I think it’s going to be good to the town to get them into (Washington Commons).” A chiropractor is expected to take over a 1,500 square-foot office around the beginning of February. Moruzzi, of Cheshire, who owns retail and other commercial spaces in Meriden, Cheshire, Wallingford and Hamden, spent $6.1 million last year to purchase the mall, the Record-Journal reported in May. He is looking for tenants to fill three restaurant spots in Washington Commons, specifically a pizzeria and a Chinese food service, as well as a restaurant that can fill a two-floor, 60,000 square-foot space with seating for about 160 people. Moruzzi said the design work has been done on those restaurant spaces and the health department has approved them for food service. bwright@record-journal.com 203-317-2316 Twitter: @baileyfaywright

Treatments Flair for Hair. Altieri, a Wallingford resident, has first-hand experience with cancer. Her sister Joni Cunningham died 19 years ago due to breast cancer, just four months after her diagnosis. “I started (Cutting for a Cure) because I wanted to keep my sister's memory alive and my sister had a type of breast cancer called inflammatory carcinoma, and it comes out as a rash, not a lump. Most people don't know about that type of breast cancer,” Altieri said.
This year’s proceeds will go to 19-year-old Amelia DePino, a North Haven native. Altieri said DePino's mother, Annetta, has been a client for 28 years and she’s watched Amelia and her sister grow up. “We've known the family forever ... so it feels right to help this family out,” Altieri said.
Amelia DePino was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia during her senior year at North Haven High School. After being in remission for about a year, the cancer relapsed this past July and her family is seeking a bone marrow Because of this, Altieri focus- transplant in October. es on awareness not only in “I was really honored and October, National Breast surprised when I found out Cancer Awareness month, when (Altieri) was doing it but year-round. for me,” Amelia DePino said. “We're very lucky because we have a profession that we get to touch people's lives and it's very personal. As you touch people's hair you get to know them, and it becomes a comfort level like that,” Altieri said. In the beginning, the fundraiser was a step toward survival for Altieri. She had spent so much time by her sister’s bedside while she was sick, that when she died, she felt like she needed to keep busy in meaningful ways. Around the same time, Altieri’s father was diagnosed with lung cancer and died just days before the first Cutting for a Cure. Still, she persisted, and ended up raising $500 that first year. “I'm like, I need to do something. I need to show my kids that bad things happen, but how are we going to rise from it and what are we going to do to make a difference. It was more for my survival when I started … because I didn't know what to do with myself,” Altieri said. Twenty years later, Altieri estimates the event has raised about $70,000 for cancer-related foundations and local families dealing with the disease.
Sandy Derbacher, a breast cancer survivor from East Haven, gets her hair washed and a head massage from stylist Jovany Olivar, on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at Flair for Hair in North Haven. The salon is offering complimentary hair treatments for cancer survivors through the month of October and will have their 20th annual Cutting for a Cure event on Oct. 28. Bailey Wright, The Citizen
310 Washington Ave. Stylists will be on hand for haircuts and styling, and Altieri expects karaoke outside, some
business vendors and raffle prizes. The breast cancer survivor treatments are offered by appointment on
Wednesdays and Fridays. bwright@record-journal.com 203-317-2316 Twitter: @baileyfaywright
“It just means a lot because it shows that my community cares for me, my family, during these hard times.” Since the DePino’s have been connected to Altieri for so long, Amelia DePino said she's been going to Cutting for a Cure all her life and remembers helping out with little things as a kid. She says it’s surreal to be on the receiving end now. Amelia DePino leaves for Boston to receive her transplant a few days before the event, but said family and friends will be there in her honor. After her treatment, she hopes to return to Sacred Heart University, where she finished her freshmen year in nursing earlier in the year. “I hope my story with my diagnosis, people see and understand what cancer’s actually like and what people actually go through,” Amelia DePino said. “I think just to live everyday without worrying and live to the fullest and don’t let little things bother you, because you never know what’s going to happen.” Anyone is welcome at this year’s Cutting for a Cure on Sunday, Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Flair for Hair,

Zak From A1
what he loves right now.” Zak Radziunis was recently diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. He would be a freshman at North Haven High School this year, but is undergoing cancer treatment. The Rotary Club is hoping to raise funds to help the Radziunis family through its annual North Haven Rotary/Tessa Marie Memorial Road Race, on Sunday, Nov. 11, and a benefit night at the Chickfil-A in town Monday, Oct. 22. Chick-fil-A will donate all proceeds made from cookie sales on Oct. 22, as well as a portion of their total day’s sales. The
restaurant will also host an event from 5 to 7 p.m. where people can come together for live music, face painting, and a free IceDream bar for NHHS students who show a school ID. The rotary will be selling bracelets at the event. “The goal there is that we really pack the house with North Haven High kids and their family,” Chickfil-A owner Sarah Guadiano said. “If you’re gonna eat that week at Chick-filA, come on Monday and support Zak.” Guadiano said they donated to the rotary’s annual road race last year— even sending a Chick-fil-A cow to kick off the race — and this year saw they could do something more. “When you talk about be-
ing committed to the community, this is our way, certainly, to give back to the community,” Guadiano said. The 7th annual 5K and fun run will take place Nov. 11, 8 to 11 a.m., at North Haven High School, 221 Elm St. The rotary’s annual pancake breakfast is planned following the run, in the middle school cafeteria. Fifty percent of the road race proceeds will go to Radziunis, the other half to local charities.
Dog walk, tag sale on the town green scheduled for Oct. 21 The Animal Haven of North Haven plans to combine its annual dog walk and tag sale events into one event, scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 21, on the
North Haven Town Green. Tag sale begins at noon, dog walk festivities at 1.

Dave not only listens to veterans’ issues, but he is also a man of action, supporting bills on their behalf.

As a U.S. Air Force veteran I am writing this letter in appreciation and support of state Rep. Dave Yaccarino. He has served in the military and has shown his understanding of veterans’ issues by acting as an effective voice for them in both Hartford and Washington.
For more information, contact Donna at 203-606-5376.
I have no doubt Dave’s experience and commitment to veterans would continue if reelected. Dave Yaccarino is not just a politician. He is a down-toearth person, a friend to veterans, and a person of integrity. Therefore, I strongly support his re-election. Vincenzo Gallo North Haven
